Chamber Trustees Welcome Congressman Adam Putnam The Chamber includes, among its many opportunities for involvement, an executive level networking group, the Trustees. This group enjoys a highlighted presence on the Chamber’s website as well as in all publications and has its own schedule of events. They are invited to monthly luncheons with high-profile speakers and presentations. The program is designed to provide them with the contacts and information to keep them apprised of issues in our business community and the ability to contribute to the solutions of those problems. They are also invited to attend Board of Directors meetings and have the benefit of presentations prepared for the Board. Trustees enjoy highlighted positions on the Chamber’s website and in its publications. The Chamber Trustees met in October for a breakfast meeting with Congressman Adam Putnam. He has been serving in Congress for the past 9 years and is a candidate for Commissioner of Agriculture in 2010. Putnam spoke to the group about his views of the challenges facing the nation at large and Florida specifically. The topics ranged from health care reform to Hometown Democracy. He also spoke of Florida’s future and the role of agriculture as a driving economic force and renewable energy source. For more information on the Chamber’s Trustee program and events, please contact Kelly Fanelli at kfanelli@palmbeaches.org or (561) 833-3711 ext 235.

Chamber Salutes Firefighters October is Fire Prevention month and the Chamber once again paid tribute to Florida’s Bravest. The Firefighter of the Year for the City of West Palm Beach and Palm Beach County were announced at the October breakfast, sponsored by St. Mary’s Medical Center. Mayor Lois Frankel announced that Lt. Nate Lasseur is this year’s West Palm Beach Fire Rescue Firefighter of the Year. He is a firefighter/paramedic at Station 3 located on Broadway. In his spare time, he helps train firefighters in Haiti, collects old fire equipment and takes it to the impoverished country. Last November, while he was visiting Haiti, a school collapsed and over 100 children died. For 15 hours, Lt. Lasseur helped in the search and rescue efforts of children buried under concrete.

Chamber of Commerce of the Palm Beaches Ranks Third in Tri-County Area

In a county with 14 Chambers, the Chamber of Commerce of the Palm Beaches works hard to raise the bar in an industry of exceptional professionals. Recently recognized as the third largest Chamber in Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach Counties, it remains among the premier business groups in the tri-county area. The Chamber of Commerce of the Palm Beaches continues to grow, averaging 40 new members each month to date for 2009. That provides members with a new group of potential customers and clients to market their company’s products and services. It also gives them a larger list of vendors from whom to purchase, strengthening the business community and benefiting the bottom line of member companies.

Committed to the success of its members, the Chamber also recognizes a responsibility to create the most dynamic environment available for business growth. Its events and membership programming reflect a desire to remain at the top of the list of outstanding business organizations in South Florida. 2010 promises to be an active and productive year for the Chamber and its members. The event calendar is already filling up with exciting venues and insightful programs. With the support of its members, the best is yet to come!

Kelly Fanelli Networking 101 Tip Ever been to a networking event where some guy is walking around handing his business card like Halloween candy, shoving his card in peoples hands as he flies around the room “networking”? Guess where those cards end up?

Think of your card as a $100 bill. Present it to people who you truly want to have it, people who get what networking is – building relationships, not handing out business cards. Your card will end up on the desk of people who are anxious to take your call, meet with you, do business together and exchange referrals.

The Chamber’s Trustee Program is a Fast Track to the Top Looking for a way to reach the decision-makers of the most influential Chamber members? Consider a Trustee membership for your company’s top level executive. The Trustee program provides an opportunity for executives to receive the prestige of networking with their peers while achieving maximum recognition. Trustee members receive recognition through a variety of communications styles. They are introduced to the membership and the community with a feature article, color photograph and biography in the Business Watch. It is sent electronically to all Chamber members and also appears in The Palm Beach Post, where it reaches 40,000 households in the West Palm Beach area. Trustees also appear in the Guide to the Palm Beaches in the Trustee section, complete with company logo, a photo and biography of the Trustee. This section appears in the first twenty pages of the 260-page award-winning publication and provides excellent exposure for the Trustees and their companies. They are also featured in the Who’s Who in the Palm Beaches in a section exclusively for their leadership group.

The Chamber’s website is host to over 4,000 hits per month and many of those are tracked to the Trustee section of the website. There again, the Trustees are featured with their Brush up on your networking skills, attend one company logo and a photograph and biography of the individual Trustee. The website allows of our FREE monthly Member Money Makers! for up-to-date information to be available on Business Watch Page 3

the program and its members regardless of publication schedules. In addition to all the recognition and highlighted opportunities, Trustees have the benefit of exclusive networking and educational events specifically targeted to Trustee members and their guests. These include private events with local, state and national leaders. Past luncheon and breakfast events with Congressmen Tom Rooney and Adam Putnam are excellent examples of the access the program provides its members to leaders interested in their perspectives and challenges.

Trustees have the opportunity of meeting with the Chairman of the Board and CEO for private luncheons to discuss upcoming Chamber issues and community events. They are also invited to attend monthly Board of Directors’ meetings, giving them insights to timely issues facing our Chamber, its members and Palm Beach County at large. Networking opportunities with highlevel executives and high profile speakers create business alliances that contribute to the growth and development of member companies. This allows the Trustee members the access necessary for fostering growth and driving success in the Palm Beaches. For more information on the Trustee Program and its members, contact Kelly Fanelli, Membership Director, at (561) 833-3711 ext 235 or kfanelli@palmbeaches.org. November 2009

PALM BEACH COUNTY’S MOST PRESTIGIOUS TOURISM HONOR WILL BE AWARDED BY THE CVB ON NOVEMBER 12 Roger Everingham, Vice President and General Manager of The Colony Hotel, today announced that the Palm Beach County Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB) has named the four-diamond boutique hotel a winner of this year’s prestigious Providencia Award.

One of the easiest and most inexpensive ways to keep your business in the public eye is to send out press releases. A press release is a quick article written in news style that promotes a recent accomplishment, event, or new feature in an informative way. Writing a press release can be a very persuasive way to get your message out, and they are easier to write than you may think. Just keep these key points in mind. Is your news “newsworthy?” The purpose of a press release is to inform the world of your news item. A good press release answers all of the “W” questions (who, what, where, when and why), providing the media with useful information about your organization, product, service or event. A press release should be written like a news article, not an advertisement. Start strong. Your headline and first paragraph should tell the story. The rest of your press release should provide the details. Oftentimes only the first few sentences will be published, so make sure they have all the key information. Write a press release as you would like it told as some media will run it exactly as it is submitted. Even if your article is not reprinted verbatim, you still will be gaining exposure. Not everything is news. While the opening of a new store or the completion of a big project is exciting for you, it is important to ask yourself what about it is exciting for other people? Focus on the aspects of your news item that truly set you apart from everyone else. Newsworthy examples: Offering a unique product or service

Receiving an award or community honor Fundraisers and Charity Events Special Certifications The media loves “feel good” news and such stories will often get you the most exposure. Attach photographs when possible. Illustrate real life: Use real life examples about how your company or organization solved a problem. Identify the problem and identify why your solution is the right solution. Corporate milestones: When announcing a corporate milestone, be sure to attribute your successes or failures to one or more events. Illustrate what you did right or how you recovered from hardship. Be truthful and avoid fluff and embellishments. Bring your press release to life by using an active, not passive, voice. Use as few words as possible to get your point across while still painting a picture of the event. Avoid the hype and limit exclamation points. Be sure to get written permission from any individuals you quote or companies that you mention. When writing about an event, it is best to submit a “media advisory” release before the event promoting it, as well as a press release. Your press release should end with a short paragraph (company boilerplate) that describes your company, products, service and a short company history. If you are filing a joint press release, include a boilerplate for both. Submit your press release to local newspapers, clients and, of course, your local Chamber of Commerce of the Palm Beaches. Send press releases to Alexandra Guth at aguth@palmbeaches.org It was an extremely successful event, resulting in several new members joining the Chamber and allowing the Ambassadors to meet the newest members of the Chamber and become their first point of contact there. Library Director Chris Murray conducted the tour of the new library, which is 2 ½ times larger than the former library, and has meeting rooms, free classes, an auditorium, an amazing kid’s area and of course, books.
