ATHENA AWARDS HONOR LOCAL AREA LEADERS, BUSINESSES AND YOUNG PROFESSIONALS

Dr. Dione Christy, Christine D. Hanley and Brandy Upright Truex

Local area leaders, businesses, and young professionals came together September 15 to celebrate 20 years of ATHENA in Palm Beach County and to honor three exceptional recipients with the 2011 ATHENA award. This year’s recipients are Dr. Dione Christy, School District of Palm Beach County in the Individual category; Christine D. Hanley & Associates, P.A. in the Business category, and Brandy Upright Truex, Upright Marketing Solutions, in the Young Professional Leadership category. “The ATHENA Awards recognize the truly inspiring women who make a difference in our community, excel in their professions and make the time to mentor others. I loved listening to their personal stories, and have great admiration for what they have accomplished and what they’ve done to bring others along in their wake,” said Carey O’Donnell, Chair, Chamber of Commerce of the Palm Beaches. “The recipients have shown outstanding leadership and are true role models for this community. The Chamber of Commerce of the Palm Beaches is honored to recognize these leaders with the ATHENA Award.” The ATHENA Awards, hosted by the Chamber of Commerce of the Palm Beaches, honor individuals, businesses, and young professionals who have achieved professional excellence, actively served the community, and helped women to reach their leadership potential. The luncheon began with a wonderful video presentation, produced by Mind’s I No Limits, Corp., spotlighting all of the award finalists and reflected on the 20-year history of ATHENA in Palm Beach County. Tania Rogers of WPTV NewsChannel 5, served as the Master of Ceremonies. Vicki Chouris, South Florida Fair and Palm Beach County Expositions and a past ATHENA recipient, was the event’s Chair. Patti Hamilton, Palm Beach County’s longtime supporter of ATHENA, was honored for her dedicated service. The ATHENA Individual Award, sponsored by SWS/Sun Recycling, was presented to Dr. Dione Christy, K-12 Certified Efficacy Specialist. Dr. Christy has evidenced leadership and depth of character in developing and leading specific District programs that strengthen the community and its youth. She is the 2002 Dwyer Award Winner for Special Education Excellence.

El Dorado Furniture – A Different Kind of Mixer El Dorado Furniture in West Palm Beach hosted the Chamber’s September networking event. Thanks to El Dorado Furniture and Nexxen Technologies for providing the raffle prizes. Special thanks to Chamber Ambassadors Gary Baja, Tina Walsh, Duke Hebert and Bob Wickwire for their assistance. Established in South Florida in 1967, El Dorado Furniture has grown to become the largest Hispanic-owned retail enterprise in the United States. The Boulevard, which El Dorado Furniture first introduced in 1994, is a cutting-edge concept that truly enhances the conventional shopping experience. Instead of browsing a typical furniture showroom, customers walk down a strip resembling an old-fashioned city street. More than 20 individually-themed storefronts open into specialized furniture shops, each showcasing the latest furniture styles for every room in the home.

Health Care Committee The Health Care Committee held its September 20th meeting at the Parish Hall at Grace Episcopal Church. Our sponsor was The Sickle Cell Foundation of Palm Beach County and Treasure Coast Inc. Dr. Yvette L. Coursey, Pat Paytee and their team did themselves proud with a great lunch and a welcoming venue. Dr. Coursey provided an overview of Sickle Cell Disease, discussing how the genetic trait is passed down, and how the disease affects the normal operation of the blood. Often thought of as a condition that only affects members of the African-American community, the trait is actually common throughout the Mediterranean region as well, reflecting its origins as a defense against malaria. And as marriages between different ethnic groups becomes more common, it is impossible to determine whether the trait is present without genetic testing, which is now required on all newborns. Scott Galloway, ATC, LAT, Head Trainer for De Soto High School in DeSoto, TX then spoke about the special dangers of exertional sickling. This has led to the deaths of a number of athletes on both the high school and college level, but has only recently begun to receive the attention it deserves. A major difficulty is that many of the symptoms are comparable to heat exhaustion, which often leads to misdiagnosis. A major effort is underway this month to educate educators, student and health care professionals, and you can learn more at www.sicklecellpalmbeach.org Our next regular meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, October 18. Please contact Mike Penn at 561.833.3711 x 236 or mpenn@palmbeaches.org for more information.
