THE city destination of Savoie
City of Art and History Chambéry was one of the first cities of France to obtain this label 30 years ago. It also was one of the first cities to privilege pedestrian areas which allow people to quietly enjoy shopping, or the terraces of many cafes and restaurants.
Chambéry enjoys an exceptional touristic location, ideally situated an hour away from Lyon, Geneva and the Italian border. The ducal city is the open gate to the regional nature reserves of Bauges and Chartreuse near the Lake Bourget and Aiguebelette. It is surrounded by vineyards of Chautagne, Chignin and Apremont where Gamay, Mondeuse, and other Chignin-Bergeron wines are cultivated.
As Rousseau, Lamartine and Stendhal, stroll in the historic centre to discover the castle of the Dukes of Savoie, its secret pathways, its private mansions, its cathedral, without forgetting the contemporary realizations of Mario Botta, and Ticino school, as well as the emblematic “four bottomless elephants” fountain entirely renovated in 2015! «Grand Carillon»
Chambéry is certainly the only town to offer its groups to brighten up their visits with a concert of a set of bells! Located in the Yolande Tower flanked on the Holy Chapel of the castle of the Dukes, it was built in 1993. With its 70 bells, it is the largest carillon in France, and one of the eight largest ones in the world. Its homogeneity of sound and an innovative mechanics in carbon fibre give it its own personality and a unique sound. The Charmettes were the place «of happiness» for Jean-Jacques Rousseau. He lived there between 1736 and 1742 with Madame de Warrens. It is here that he built his personality, by studying mathematics, music, plants, literature at the mercy of long walks that nature offers around. Listed as historical monument, with the label «Maison des Illustres», it nestles in a sheltered valley which offers a remarkable view of the Bauges massif and Nivolet Mountain. The site is composed of a vineyard, an orchard, beehives and a French garden. Museum opening hours vary by season, details on the Museum’s website.
