Chambéry, Reflections of Italy Chambéry is closely linked to Italy. For six centuries, Chambéry, Savoy, Turin and Piedmont came under the authority of the House of Savoy.
Heartstopping!
Chambéry enables you to plunge into the history of the Alps. Labelled the City of art & history, Chambéry has a district full of antiquities that have been carefully preserved and restricted to pedestrians to encourage them to stroll around the city. You can lose yourself in the colourful, picturesque alleys of the old capital of the Dukes of Savoy. This is one of the charms of Chambéry, which, like a breeze from Italy, has inspired a pleasant lifestyle that surprises and enchants the visitor.
• the Italian-style porticoes and mansions with colourful façades of Sardinian inspiration
Chambéry expresses the French Art of Living with an Italian touch!
Both here and there, you will be enchanted with • the Château of the Dukes of Savoy and the Holy Chapel
In Chambéry, the touch of the great architect Mario Botta and the School of Tessin can be seen, reflecting the perennial French art of living with a (Swiss) Italian flavour.
• the cathedral with the biggest trompe l’œil mural in Europe, painted by artists from Piedmont • the maze of hidden alleyways • the Grand Carillon, one of the biggest in the world: 8th in the world, 1st in Europe • the Fine Arts Museum • Les Charmettes, home of JeanJacques Rousseau • and of course, the famous Fountain of the Elephants...

Chambéry with a taste of Italy
Other links to Italy
The gastronomy of Chambéry will surprise you with its Italianflavoured specialties... You will find Chambéry Vermouth, pastas and polenta, (Crozets, Taillerins…), that remind you of Italian tagliatelle, taiarin or tagliolini. Turin is the Italian capital of chocolate, but the famous chocolate truffles were created in Chambéry in 1895. History and tradition are never far away… An essential tool for cooking since 1890, the Opinel, the renowned knife with a wooden handle and folding blade, is made in Chambéry!
• Holy Chapel of the Château of the Dukes of Savoy once housed the Holy Shroud (today in Turin); but a lifesize copy is displayed in the Sainte Chapelle and another can be viewed in the Cathedral. • Hautecombe Abbey, on the edge of Lake Bourget, the largest natural lake in France, houses the tombs of the Counts and Princes of the House of Savoy, of the last Queen of Italy, Marie José, and the last King, Umberto II.

Challes-les-Eaux - Well-Being Nestled at the entrance to the Regional Nature Parks of the NEW IN 2017 Massif des Bauges and Chartreuse, at the crossroads of the Cryotherapy City of Chambéry and the vineyards of Combe de Savoie, at Challes-les-Eaux Challes-les-Eaux welcomes visitors in a lush, green bower Full-body Cryotherapy (CCE) is that promotes well-being. The discovery of the hotspring with the most sulphurous waters in Europe gave the name of “Sulphur Queen” to this thermal resort in the 19th century and forever changed the destiny of this little rural community. Respiratory and gynecological infections are treated here very efficiently. At the beginning of the 20th century, during the golden age of thermal baths, well-heeled visitors came to “take the waters” and seek entertainment. Among them were Louis Jouvet, André Gide and Michèle Morgan…

Bike paths/Road tours
For over 20 years, the network of bike paths has been extended and expanded to over 80 km of interconnected paths linked with 2 green avenues which connect the city of Aix-Les-Bains and Lake Bourget in the North with Combe de Savoie in the South. The Greater Metropolitan Area of Chambéry - Cœur des Bauges is at the origin of previous improvements, such as the pedestrian areas, one-way streets open to bike traffic, the 30 kmh and 20 kmh zones in the city-centre…
Chambéry on two wheels Since the 1989 World Cycling Championships, won by Greg LeMond and Jeannie Longo, Chambéry is counting on its two wheelers. Chambéry thus hosts 2 important organisations in the world of cycling: • Chambéry Cyclisme Organisation, competitions (see below)

The tour of the Regional Nature Park of the Massif des Bauges, or 160 km, can be done in 3 or 4 stages. A circle-tour of 99 km with a 1,000-metre climb among the vineyards, lakes and mountains enables you to complete the Bauges crossing. A circle tour of 74 km also leads to the Pont de l’Abîme by way of the Pass of Plainpalais. More difficult is the tour of the Colombier d’Aillon-le-Jeune, with a rather steep climb of the Pass of Prés. A magnificent ride awaits cyclists in the heart of the Massif des Bauges Geopark. The extension of the ViaRhôna between Chanaz and Montmélian should be completed soon. For mountain-bikers, there is a beautiful playground near SaintFrançois-de-Sales. Two descent trails are accessible at the summit of the chairlift from Mont Pelat to Aillons-Margériaz 1000, as well as on the trails of Savoie Grand Revard. Closer to Chambéry, remarkable scenic views are offered by the Crêtes du Peney and the Vineyard Trail on your departure from Saint-Alban-Leysse, or on your tour of Puygros, Thoiry and SaintJean-d’Arvey.

Regional Nature Park of the Massif des Bauges Listed as a UNESCO Global Geopark in 2011 International recognition for a remarkable geological heritage with outstanding features. This Massif offers a pristine natural setting of forests, meadows and mountain peaks, with 14 authentic little villages that form the municipal federation of Cœur des Bauges. The highest peak, Arcalod, rises to an altitude of 2,217 metres It is a territory of discoveries and new experiences. A paradise of mountain activities (showshoeing, skiing, dogsledding, climbing, canyoning, potholing, zip-lining…).
Only 20 minutes from the big urban centres, you can breathe in the fresh mountain air, in summer as well as in winter. Indeed, the Massif is located between Chambéry, Aix-les-Bains et Albertville, idylically between the two biggest natural lakes of France, Lake Annecy and Lake Bourget.
Savoie Grand Revard is the finest Nordic skiing area in France; apart from cross-country skiing, more unusual activities such as astronomy or fat biking are also available. A biathlon stadium is also accessible, not to mention tubbing.
Land of traditions, you will also find here Nordic ski slopes and Alpine ski resorts, perfect for beginners and for all forms of sliding sports.
Two Family Resorts for the Discovery of lots of Activities! Winter and summer, the resorts of Savoie Grand Revard and Aillons-Margériaz offer a range of activities to delight adults and children. 12
In the summer, near the Revard lookout, one of the most visited sites in Savoy, the mountain-bike is everywhere: in the underbrush, on the descent trails, at the kindergarten of the onsite school, during competitions (La Grande Verte…).
Aillons-Margériaz and its two ski fields, starting at 1000 and 1400 metres, offers a range of varied slopes from learners to black slopes, the steepest slopes in the Alps. Dogsledding, ski-joëring, sledding and night skiing… will liven up your mountain holidays. Ski rhymes here with local “terroir”: tours of farms, the discovery area of the Fromagerie, a workshop where the Tome des Bauges brand of cheese and butter are made, Gliss’gourmande, an event combining pleasure for your tastebuds (meeting local producers) and the joys of sliding sports or snowshoes. The rest of the year, the via ferrata, the swimming pool, the zipline, the mountain-bike descent trails and hikes to Galoppaz or Colombier will enable you to vary your pleasures. This is a resort that combines sports, local “terroir” and relaxation! Le Massif des Bauges, “an
islet” of medium mountains in the heart of Savoy country, its soaring mountain ranges, its knowhow and its local architecture, invite you to discover the great outdoors, the pleasures of sports and good living.
Local Products in Bauges: Tome cheese but that’s not all! The cheese plate for tasting in Bauges includes a specialty that you must not miss: the Tome des Bauges PDO. This Tome cheese, which has the special characteristic of being written with only one M, (its name “Toma” is from the local dialect, meaning cheese produced in the mountain pastures) has the fragrant taste of the meadow flowers of the Massif des Bauges. www.tome-des-bauges.com Many other specialties must be tasted in Bauges: chocolates, herbal teas, organic bread, liqueurs from plants and beers (to consume with moderation…).
Surprise yourself:
