P

roof that the economy is on the rebound is that the City of Chamblee is attracting some major developments. These are investments in the economy of our community that will add new business activity and new residents for many decades to come.

Gateway South was given approval for a planned unit development on the site of the old City Farmers’ Market at Chamblee-Tucker Road and Peachtree Boulevard – across the street from Walmart. The traffic light at this location will be the primary entrance and will also accommodate future development of the vacant MARTA parking lot next door. The large mixed-use project is being developed by CFD Peachtree Boulevard, LLC. It will include 283 apartments, including a number of live-work units and townhouses. The commercial component will include more than 11,000 sq. ft. of restaurant and retail space. A two-level parking facility will accomodate more than 500 cars and will be topped by a green trellis and wrapped with a green wall. Because of its vicinity to MARTA, Gateway South will have a smaller parking garage than other developments of this size. Gateway South’s architecture will feature a series of four- and five-story buildings with undulating facades and ground-level storefronts covered by awnings. The main building will be topped by an illuminated roof sign that says “Chamblee,” which will serve as a gateway to the southern entrance of our vibrant and growing city. An even bigger mixed-use project is proposed by Spruce Street Properties on the west side of Peachtree Boulevard at its intersection with Clairmont Road. Parkview on Peachtree would have 600 apartments, 5,112 sq. ft. of office space, 23,821 sq. ft. of retail space, and a 28,540 sq. ft. grocery store. The developer has prepared an application for approval that is on the agenda of City Council for a public hearing on the evening of Oct. 16. This new development will abut Keswick Park and be bisected by the existing Chamblee Rail-Trail, providing an exciting gateway for bikes, pedestrians and joggers using the trail next to Clairmont Road joining Keswick Park and Chamblee-Tucker Road.

Partnership with DeKalb CVB

W

e are excited to work with the DeKalb Convention and Visitors Bureau to promote our events and make Chamblee a destination spot. The City of Chamblee collects a special 5 percent tax from all hotels and motels within the city limits. Two percent of this revenue must be spent on promoting Chamblee tourism and this promotion has to be done through a contract with a public nonprofit agency. The city has signed a one-year contract with the DeKalb Convention and Visitors Bureau, which also partners with the Stone Mountain Memorial Association, the City of Doraville and the City of Decatur. The DeKalb CVB will advertise Chamblee events, restaurants and businesses, and provide opportunities for cross advertising. The organization produces the Discover DeKalb Destination Guide magazine, the “Off the Eaten Path” blog and DiscoverDeKalbMusic.com. To promote our city, DeKalb CVB has created the Discover Chamblee webpage and highlighted Chamblee in its Discover DeKalb newsletter. The CVB also enlisted professional photographer Carmen K. Sisson to take photos of Chamblee to use for promotions. The DeKalb CVB was the presenting sponsor of this year’s Taste of Chamblee event. The organization has joined the Chamblee Chamber of Commerce and will be on the Economic Development committee.

The DeKalb CVB had a professional photographer take photos like this one for Chamblee to use for promotions.

Instructions for Leaf Season Please remember to place limbs, logs, and leaves in separate piles for pickup to ensure proper handling without impeding service times. All these items are collected by different trucks for recycling. Do not mix construction debris with yard trimmings. Any of the above items mixed with leaves will damage the impeller inside the leaf machine and this could jeopardize collection times and create unsafe conditions for the workers. Place leaves in loose piles on the ground on the residents’ side of the curb, or they may also be bagged. The leaf machine runs through the entire city once a week. Because of the volume, there is no set day when it will be in your area. We rotate the starting point of collection each week to ensure equal pickups. All trash should be bagged, tied, and at the street by 7 a.m. Call 770-986-5019 with questions or concerns. 4 | CHAMBLEEGA.COM

Community News Little Free Libraries Sprout in Chamblee

A

dam Stine, former president of the Huntley Hills Neighborhood Association, was honored in September with the installation of a Little Free Library at the neighborhood park on Longview Drive and Admiral Drive. Stine’s wife, Stefanie Ramsey, officially opened the park’s Little Free Library by donating some of Stine’s favorite science fiction books. “The ‘take a book, return a book’ concept is so perfect in honoring Adam,” explained Ramsey. “One of the many things that sealed our relationship early on was our love of books. Adam would have loved that there is now a gathering place where anyone can stop by and pick up a book and then bring back a book to share.” Stine died in 2012 at the age of 45 from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). “Since Adam’s death, we’ve all struggled to find something that truly represented his importance to this neighborhood,” explained neighbor Paige Perkins. “The Little Free Library concept perfectly reflects Adam’s idea of participatory philanthropy – share what you have and ask others to do the same and you can’t help but build a great community.” A neighbor donated the installation and Leslie Freymann, Chamblee Recreation Advisory Committee member and Huntley Hills neighbor, coordinated the effort with the assistance of the Chamblee Public Works and Parks Department. Freymann also welcomed Stine’s family and friends to

the park for the installation. The Stine library is the fourth Little Free Library in Chamblee. The other three are located at the corner of Keswick Drive and Keswick Circle (installed by the Terry family), in Huntley Hills at the corner of Longview and Plantation Lane (installed by the Freymann family) and the front entrance at Huntley Hills Elementary School (installed by parents). The Huntley Hills Elementary library is at a popular corner where crossing guard Ms. Penny is stationed. The library adds extra excitement to the start of the kids school day. They bring books from home to donate and select new books to take into the school for reading time. Volunteers from the Chamblee Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee can help coordinate efforts and provide assistance to residents who wish to install their own Little Free Libraries or partner with neighbors to set one up. Local businesses can also sponsor libraries.

Thanksgiving is around the corner . . .

Holiday Cooking Fire Prevention Tips Most house fires occur while someone is cooking. Here are tips for avoiding fires in the kitchen. Keep an eye on what you fry. Do not wear loose clothing or dangling sleeves while cooking. Never leave cooking food unattended. If you must leave the kitchen, for even a moment, turn off the stove. Other ways to avoid cooking fires: • When frying food, if you see smoke or the grease boils, turn the burner off. • Keep children and pets at least three feet away from the stove. • Clean and clear the area around the stove before turning on the heat. • Turn pot handles to the back of the stove so no one bumps them or pulls them over. • Move things that can burn away from the stove – items such as dishtowels, bags, boxes, paper and curtains.

The pan is on fire. If the pan catches fire, don’t move it. Slide a pan lid or cookie sheet on top of the pan to smother the fire. Turn off the heat. Never try to stop a grease or oil fire with water – it will only make the fire bigger. Oven, microwave fires. If something catches fire in the oven, keep the door closed. Call 911 so firefighters can make sure the fire didn’t spread to the walls. If a fire occurs in the microwave, keep the door closed and unplug it. Don’t use it until a repairman checks it. Stop, drop and roll. If a fire occurs and someone’s clothes are on fire, he/she should stop immediately, drop to the floor, cover face with hands and roll until the fire is out. Just get out. Leave the home and call the fire department from outside. Make sure everyone in the home gets out – fast.

Once outside, stay out. Never go back inside a burning building. Make a plan. The Red Cross recommends that households develop a fire escape plan and practice it at least twice a year with everyone who lives in the home. You should know two ways to escape from every room and designate a place to meet outside the home in case of a fire.

Events Taste of Chamblee It was perfect weather at this year’s Taste of Chamblee. It was a day of yummy food, good music and cool cars. Georgia Lions Lighthouse raised more than $50,000 to support their mission to create a better Georgia by providing much-needed vision and hearing care to our under-served neighbors.

Taste of Chamblee winners: • Blogger’s Choice, presented by Malika Bowling (Atlanta Restaurant Blog, Association of Food Bloggers President): Hello Gorgeous Boutique and Café

From left: Kristian Ashe, Chef Alexis Hernandez of Union Hill Kitchen, and Teresa Taylor. Chef Hernandez won Food Network’s Cutthroat Kitchen competition in September.

• Dining Out Magazine Award: Olde Blind Dog • Judges Choice: Chamblee Bistro • Chamblee Favorite: Chilangos Group • Chamblee Favorite Runner-up: The Mad Italian
