Small group and tailor-made adventures

WELCOME

TO A DV EN T U R E W OR L D WID E I began my own adventures back in the late 1970s - hitch-hiking around England, youth-hostelling on foot around the Peak District, taking my first venture overseas on a Freddie Laker standby ticket to the USA, and then a big, two-year solo trip around the world in the early eighties: working and hitch-hiking my way through Europe, America, Australasia and an unforgettable six months travelling across Asia from Bali to Pakistan. Travel got into my blood and I decided to make it my career and my life. For the last 30 years I have worked in the field of adventure travel and I’ve seen it change from an obscure ‘beards, socks and sandals’ kind of experience, to a multi-million dollar global industry - I’ve even heard adventure referred to as a mass-market “product” recently. For me and my colleagues here though, we work very hard to create experiences that are as far from “mass-market” as possible. The key aspect of any adventure is that it provides some element of challenge for you personally - otherwise it’s just a holiday, not an adventure. You have to stretch your limits and get out of your comfort zone - and if you do, the rewards are plentiful, often life-changing. That might mean taking part in a physical activity like cycling in Vietnam, or kayaking in Croatia. Or it could mean travelling to an adventurous destination - somewhere wild and wonderful such Kyrgyzstan or Colombia - where the challenge is less physical, more cerebral.

You’ll find our brochure full of interesting ideas with carefully crafted itineraries, for travelling with like-minded adventurers in small groups or for tailor-making your own personal adventure. Contact us and you’ll be given a personal service with great attention to detail. That’s what sets us apart. Adventure for us is still something to cherish and we welcome you into our world - there are no limits, only those in your imagination.

Different trip types Adventure Worldwide holidays vary in style, level of activity and ‘off-the-beaten-track’ factor. Activity-based trips might see you cycling, rafting, kayaking or whizzing on a zip-wire, while dedicated walking itineraries – in partnership with our specialist division, Walks Worldwide – focus on walking and trekking. Other holidays may take you deep into wilderness or through less-travelled lands with opportunities for cultural immersion. In order to help our customers choose a certain type of trip we have created quick reference icons which can be found on every holiday page.

trip grading To help you decide if a trip is right for you, we’ve given each of our holidays a physical grade, which indicates the level of activity involved. We also give each trip an ‘off-thebeaten-track’ grading which may have more of a culture shock than others. See overleaf.

So much is included! With so many deals and discounts around these days it can be very difficult to judge what the real price is or what hidden extras might be added on later. Our pricing is very clear and we include much more than most people expect. The following things are included in our prices: ¬ Personal service from a real person!

accommodation Our trips are not just tours featuring generic hotels and you won’t find Sky TV in every room! We’ve specifically hunted out places with character and charm in the best locations to really experience your chosen destination. From jungle lodges to desert camps, 4WD suites to overnight trains and guesthouses with local hosts... More information can be found overleaf.

Expert leaders & Guides Our local leaders and guides all over the world work tirelessly behind the scenes to make sure your adventure holiday runs happily and smoothly. They are a cross between walking encyclopaedias, nature experts, logistics professionals and guardian angels!

responsible travel We respect local people and the natural features and resources of the countries we have the privilege to travel to, and want to help preserve them. By travelling as part of a small group and by using local guides, local transport and local accommodation where possible, you’ll be putting valuable revenue into the local economy. We won’t preach at you, but we do try to provide you with information as to how you can minimise any negative impacts on the culture and to the environment through which you travel.

¬ Flights and financial protection ¬ Accommodation throughout ¬ Expert leaders and guides ¬ Advice, local knowledge and guidance ¬ Transport arrangements ¬ A carefully planned itinerary ¬ Entrance fees to sites (where included) ¬ A local contact in case you need help ¬ 24-hour emergency line, 365 days a year ¬ Loyalty discount on your next trip

Altogether excellent value!

independent (and proud of it!) We’re not owned by a big PLC or run from a country in a far-off land so we’re very connected with our customers. Our close-knit team is based in Hampshire and we are very proud of our independent ownership. You’ll find that we’re friendly, efficient and flexible. Adventure Worldwide is fully bonded (see page 3) through ATOL and ABTOT and we are ABTA members too, so you have complete peace of mind backed by a genuinely professional service.

CHOOSE YOUR style OF ADVENTURE Our helpful quick reference guides can help you decide what kind of adventure you want.

Adventure may mean one thing to one person and something completely different to someone else. Our adventures are more than just run-of-the-mill holidays, they’re real experiences and sometimes life changing ones at that. To help you decide on what type of adventure holiday is right for you, we have created some helpful classifications – on type of holiday, physical exertion levels, culture shock ratings and unique accommodation options. On this page you can see what each of the classifications mean so you can look out for your chosen types on the following holiday pages.

trip type icons Walking adventures

Seeing a destination is often best on foot, so get those walking boots on and get exploring. Our walking adventures include trekking but may also focus on different activities. How about walking in the Sahara Desert in Morocco, or trekking the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu?

Cycling trips

A growing number of our holidays contain cycling or mountain biking. This may be for a morning, a day or several days consecutively. Exploring on two wheels really makes you part of the local scene - rather than just being an observer. Our specialists will advise you on the level of cycling featured in each trip.

Culture & Discovery

Exploring other cultures, traditions, religions and cuisines is often what makes an adventure. See the big sights but also experience the local culture away from tourist traps. Be it staying with an indigenous Red Dzao family in Vietnam, meeting Nubra Shepherds in India or finding out about salt production in Bolivia.

Activity & Adrenaline

These trips are especially created with fun, thrills, excitement and adventure in mind. Get your adrenaline pumping whilst white-water rafting in Peru, learning forest survival skills in Finland or zip-wiring through the cloud forests of Costa Rica.

wildlife encounters

We have developed many itineraries which offer the opportunity to see the best wildlife that our planet has to offer. Spot cheetahs in Namibia, see wild elephants in Sri Lanka, stunning birdlife in Botswana, gorillas in Rwanda or go bear watching in Finland.

overland journeys

Our overland journeys are created to get you off the beaten track and to experience epic once-in-a-lifetime adventures. This can be a great way to explore several countries at once. Travel from Tibet down to Kathmandu, journey from Cape Town to Victoria Falls, head across South America...

nature

Many of our trips have a particular focus on the natural world and will take you to some of the most biodiverse places on the planet. Discover cloud forests in Costa Rica, the aquatic wildernesses of Botswana, the otherworldly Atacama Desert in Chile...

off-the-beaten-track This scale indicates a range of cultural, geographical and climatic differences, and sometimes risks that you may not normally have to deal with at home. To highlight the potential ‘culture shock’, each trip has been given an ‘off-the-beaten-track’ grading. The lower end of the scale is fairly adventurous and the higher end of the scale are our ‘really out there’ trips which are exceptionally adventurous and include very remote and isolated areas, possibly with extreme climate and often with significant ‘culture shock’.

DON’T JUST TAKE OUR WORD FOR IT... We are very proud of the feedback we receive through our post trip questionnaires, through online reviews on our website, and in emails and letters from our customers. Here’s what a few of our clients have to say.

“A wonderful experience of a beautiful country full of contrast. The walking and cycling heightened the feeling of being immersed in the culture.” IAN HAMER, ACTIVE VIETNAM

“After a day’s sea kayaking and a hike to a wonderful farm up in the hills of Sipan, the tiring kayak back was interrupted by a wild dolphin swimming around us, diving for food. As the sun dipped into the horizon, we sat still on the water just listening to the sound of the dolphin coming up for breath every few minutes. It was truly magical.” CLAIRE DAVIS, SEA KAYAK DALMATIA, CROATIA

“Uzbekistan is a hidden gem offering a wealth of history, culture and adventure. I achieved my personal goal of seeing Registan in Samarkand, though the sights of Khiva and the majesty of the Ustyurt Plateau are also highlights. The people of Uzbekistan are among the most welcoming and generous I have ever encountered, I was even invited to attend the reception of the wedding of my driver’s daughter while on tour!” JOHN O’CONNELL, SILK ROAD SAFARI, UZBEKISTAN

8

adventureworldwide.co.uk

“The bear and wolverine coming so close to the hut we were in was very exciting. Everyone we met was cheerful and helpful, and this all made it a very enjoyable trip.” HELEN CORKHILL, Taiga Forest Adventure, FINLAND

“Seeing partially excavated Silk Road cities just sitting there unexplored at every turn and villages where you feel you have stepped back in time all contrasted with the marble white cities with the most unusual architecture you will ever see. A weird and wonderful country that even has a national holiday to celebrate the melon and boy, do they love a melon! Expect to eat it three times a day.” ANGELA LAMBILLION, CASPIAN & THE KARAKUM, TURKMENISTAN

slow travel in South east asia Emma Rigby cycled her way across Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam – fuelled by curiosity, curry and copious noodles.

I am the kind of person who finds it hard to sit still, even when on holiday. I adore cycling. It’s relaxing, but it feels adventurous too: it makes me feel alert, awake and properly alive. So when I finally got the chance to explore South-East Asia, somewhere I’d long wanted to visit, there was only one choice of trip: cycling. It’s ‘slow travel’, but this itinerary covers a good amount of ground, taking in three countries in one holiday. What’s not to love? When we emerged from the airport into the sticky air of Bangkok after an overnight flight, I was exhausted and hot. But we were met by the liveliest person I’ve ever encountered – Yai, our Thai guide, a tiny ball of energy. She immediately grabbed my backpack – which was as big as she was – and whisked us into the minibus for the journey to our first hotel. Within minutes, I felt immersed in sunshine. Stopping at a little roadside cafe set the tone for the following days: eating delicious, fresh local food served from a big pot, sitting on plastic chairs to munch alongside smiling Thai people. After a dip in the pool, our guide took us out to explore the nearby market. It was exactly what I’d hoped for: bustling, colourful, packed with stalls selling things I’d never imagined you could eat, the air thick with the scents of herbs and spices. Skipping stall to stall, Yai bought edible leaves, fish and various delicacies, and helped us fold them together to make delicious snacks.

12

adventureworldwide.co.uk

We ate dinner outside – bliss after the chilly November evenings in England – serenaded by crickets, and rounded off the evening by lighting Chinese lanterns and making a wish as we released them into the night sky. So much happened on that first night, it felt like a whole holiday in one day. After a restful sleep in a brightly painted hut, we donned our helmets and hopped on our bikes for the first day’s ride. Full of enthusiasm, I was keen to really go for it – and with 90km to ride until that night’s stop, there was plenty of opportunity. But we paused every 10km or so for a snack, to top up on water and sunscreen, or just to chat in the shade. And because our support vehicle was never far behind, there was always the opportunity to throw the bike in the van and ride for part of the way. Some of the group might cycle for half the day or so, then relax in the minibus, while the rest of us were happy to keep pedalling – the pace was always leisurely, the roads good and the terrain gentle. For me, a bonus of cycling is that it makes eating even more enjoyable, and the food we tried from even the smallest roadside cafes was always a hundred times better than in restaurants at home. Green curry, stir-fries, noodles with pork – all of them were amazing. Grinning grandmas at local markets would gesture to buckets of live eels, and laughing kids posed for photos as we waved and passed by.

Once we reached Cambodia, we said goodbye to our wonderful Thai guide and met our local leader. That proved to be really special. Because he comes from a village near Angkor, he was a font of knowledge – not just about the incredible collection of ancient monuments themselves, but the secret backroads between them. Scooting through the jungle to isolated temples, we felt as if we were the first to discover ruins still buried in the forest, with no other tourists in sight. It was simply magical, and quite a contrast to bustling Siem Reap. The base town for Angkor is a busy, fascinating place, with fantastic eateries and plenty of bargains. I even tried a treatment by ‘Dr Fish’, dipping my tired feet into a water-filled bowl where tiny fish nibbled my toes. After visiting the powerfully moving sites commemorating the atrocities of the Khmer Rouge in Phnom Penh, we crossed the border again into Vietnam – and both local guide and atmosphere changed yet again: different accents, different clothes, different scenery, lush with neat rice paddies. At the end of our first day’s ride, as we pedalled into the small village that would be our home for the night, the streets were lined with kids shouting and holding up hands to high-five us – I felt like we’d just won the Tour de France! Next day we boarded a boat through the Mekong Delta, past floating markets and fish farms, a mesmerising living landscape. Hopping off onto a small island, we stopped at a breathtakingly beautiful

"The streets were lined with kids shouting and holding up hands to high-five us – I felt like we'd just won the Tour de France!" French colonial-style house – and this homestay was one of the most memorable experiences of the trip. After a cookery class, we ate dinner on the balcony overlooking the river as the sun set. The cuisine in Vietnam was unbelievable: the array of fresh vegetables and herbs spread on the table look like a collection of cuttings from a garden, and the dishes created were so fresh and aromatic. Our final stretch of cycling saw us turning east towards Saigon, flitting across dozens of tiny islands over small bridges, dodging mopeds and other bikes on narrow roads before venturing off onto jungle pathways. At the end of the day, passing genial locals in conical hats and white tunics, I was sad to say goodbye to my bike that had carried me so far. But we’d go out with a bang: two nights in Saigon, which seemed huge and wonderfully hectic after our rural journey. Markets? Of course – and hard bargaining was the order of the day, setting the pulse racing in a rather different way. I took home so many memories from the trip: of temples and markets, smiling faces and fabulous food. But most of all, I remember the feeling of whizzing along, past banana plants and rivers and villages.

Journey to the end of the earth Adventure Worldwide travel expert, Matthew Bennett took on the Ultimate Patagonia Adventure and shares his experiences and memories.

argentina & chile

Embarking on the Ultimate Patagonia Adventure was the fulfilment of a dream for me; to explore one of the most beautiful areas of the world on an epic journey. The scenery was spellbinding. Dramatic panoramas surrounded us, made up of stunning lakes, untouched snowy peaks and towering spires, which gave the place an other-wordly, magical feel. We could not have wished for better guides. We were accompanied by dedicated tour leaders supported by specialist local guides in each national park. They were all so knowledgeable, helpful and friendly from start to finish, always remaining professional and fun - such a bonus. This journey exceeded my expectations, taking in all the big hitters of Patagonia. From Cerro Fitzroy, Perito Moreno Glacier and the granite towers of Torres Del Paine to the breath-taking Tierra del Fuego and the Beagle Channel. We also had the opportunity to visit and even trek on Viedma Glacier in Argentina and spend a day walking to the Grey Lake and

Glacier on the famous W route of Torres Del Paine. On the Argentinian side of Patagonia, the humidity is blocked by the Andes, so the landscape is semi arid. Whereas on the Chilean side, the humidity comes off the Pacific Ocean, giving a much greener landscape. Further down in Ushuaia, the landscape resembles some of the beauty spots of the northern hemisphere. The trip was completed by the incredible cuisine. Now that is something to write home about! Argentina and Chile have some of the finest food in the world. Just some of the highlights were the excellent red wine from Mendoza, the beef steaks in El Chalten, fresh salmon in Puerto Natales and a wonderful lamb BBQ at the Estancia in Rio Grande. This adventure was more than just a taste of Patagonia - it was a banquet!

African smiles are the biggest and brightest I know. There is nothing like an African storm, the rain hammers down and all other sound is drowned out as the sweet smell of damp earth rises. africa

There is no such thing as a ‘typical day on safari’ – each day is unique. Unlike a stay-put resort holiday, where every day is much like the day before, same program, same food, same people, same scenery - a touring adventure is a completely different experience. Each day there is something new and exciting to look forward to. Each day there is a tinge of regret as you have to leave behind the place that formed the memories of yesterday... Southern Africa is as diverse as it is large – climbing a massive dune at sunrise in the Namib Desert, sipping a perfect cappuccino on the top of Table Mountain, gliding silently through the intricate waterways of the Okavango Delta in a traditional mokoro dugout, tiptoeing quietly behind your safari guide in search of rhino in the Matobos National Park in Zimbabwe, flying over the billowing spray cloud of the Victoria Falls in a microlight – no day can be the same. Travelling overland in a small group through Southern Africa gives you the best value for money in terms of destinations and travel experience. Our groups often have a mix of nationalities travelling together and usually a maximum group size of 12. With two qualified guides on each safari you have a local team sharing their knowledge and passion. Southern Africa is a massive region and there are some long travel days. In essence your holiday revolves around the touring vehicle and you will come to think of it as your home away from home. The focus of our trips in Southern Africa is wildlife, and while there will sometimes be days that involve general sight-seeing, meeting local people, wildlife viewing and

wilderness or national park experiences will be the crux of your journey. Each national park or wildlife reserve that we visit has not only a different environment, but often different species and sometime endemic ones. For example the animals that survive the harsh semidesert of the Etosha National Park will have different behavioural patterns in terms of migration, feeding and breeding to the animals that enjoy the water-abundant environment of the Okavango Delta. The dry low vegetation coverage in the Fynbos of the Western Cape is one of only six floral kingdoms in the world, and has more species of plants than the Amazon rainforests, which contrasts dramatically with the lush sub-tropical landscape of Mozambique where massive trees and lush grasses prevail. No matter which environment you chose to explore, your local guides will assist with interpretation so that you can experience the most from your travels in Southern Africa. Travelling with local guides is your best opportunity to maximise your wildlife viewing. They know the areas and spend the majority of their time in the bush. Obviously they will try to show you the

highlights of the area that you are visiting, be that lions in the Kruger National Park on an early morning game drive, or the leopards in Southern Luangwa on a night drive with spotlight. Perhaps the unique African pengiun colony on the Cape of Good Hope or massive herds of elephants in the Chobe River basin. Southern Africa has a rich and well-preserved wildlife heritage offering one of the few places on earth with wildlife viewing as both diverse and prolific. Travel in Southern Africa is hugely rewarding, and quite different to travel in other parts of the world. There must be something special about our part of Africa that keeps travellers exploring again and again. Why not come and experience it for yourself? By Bruce Taylor

Dive into Croatia A kayaking holiday around the islands off the Dalmatian Coast made a big splash with travel expert, Steve Nagle. When I’d first mooted the idea of a multiactivity holiday in Croatia to my wife, the response wasn’t overwhelming. The thought of spending a week kayaking around a small island in the Adriatic didn’t really, well, float her boat. But I’d long hankered after a visit to Dubrovnik, that lauded ‘Pearl of the Adriatic’, with its terracotta-tiled rooftops and dazzling Dalmatian Coast. And so it was that on a warm August afternoon we decanted from our flight into a speedboat that whisked us, James Bond style, to the small island of Lopud, one of three in the Elafiti archipelago. As we walked up to our guesthouse from the harbour, I realised that the retreating throb of the boat was the last engine we’d hear for a while - there are no cars on the island. That evening, we got to know the others in our group over a feast of freshly grilled seafood. On that first day we quickly mastered the basics and paddled out of the cove towards Sipan, the largest of the three islands. There we picked up mountain bikes to explore, pedalling past vineyards and fragrant olive groves, pausing to stroll the charming settlement of Sipanska Luka and nose into the remains of churches and grand houses of Dubrovnik’s renaissanceera bigwigs. We quickly settled into a rhythm. Rise, breakfast, paddle to a new playground - for a spot of snorkelling, perhaps, a dolphin-watching boat tour or an amble to the taverna at Sunj beach on the other side of Lopud. That spot became a firm favourite, a place to relax and graze on Croatian cuisine - an Italo-Balkan fusion, rich in pasta, rice and flapping-fresh fish. With all this activity, great company, fresh air and delicious local food, we felt healthier and more relaxed than we had in months.

WALKING WITH BEARS WITH

physicaL Challenge

off-the-beaten-track rating

This walking adventure in the Tatras is unique This is a challenging walking holiday in a spectacular mountain area, with the opportunity to see bears in the wild. The trip does not involve sitting around in a bear hide all day hoping a bear might just come along - our aim is to locate and observe bears in their natural habitat. Reaching the Silent Valley, a park ranger will accompany us as we go ‘off piste’ and walk amongst the mountains in an area where tourists are usually forbidden. Group size is limited to a maximum of eight. We have a special agreement with the national park and local rangers for this experience.

DISCOVER THE ATLAS Morocco’s High Atlas Mountains are sometimes overlooked by trekkers dashing to the loftier Himalaya - but this range offers dramatic and challenging walking at a very affordable price.

Have you ever tried Berber whisky? It’s dark golden, slightly sweet, incredibly refreshing after a hard day’s trekking. And with alcohol content at a healthy 0%, it’s just the right brew to swig at altitude without the banging headache that usually follows a cold lager. ‘Berber whisky’ is, of course, mint tea – or so it’s nicknamed by some of the wittier guides in Morocco’s High Atlas. And it’s ubiquitous, drunk at breakfast, lunch, dinner and at any and every point in between. Even if you don’t take a shine to it at first, by the end of a trek you’ll be utterly addicted.

to distant trails in Himalaya or Andes. For starters, these peaks are a mere hop away from home – Marrakech, in the western foothills, is less than four hours’ flight from London, and exploring its noisy, mesmerising Djemma el-Fna square and rabbit-warren medina is a post-trek highlight. Thanks to connections via lowcost airlines, accessing the mountains is cheap and easy – and once you’ve arrived, travel in Morocco is something of a bargain, too, with great-value accommodation. That’s why we can offer superb trekking at great prices.

Mint tea isn’t the only flavour that marks out Morocco as something special. If you’ve hiked in Nepal’s Himalaya, you’ll have encountered dal bhat – and though this spicy lentil stew and rice is fine fuel, let’s face it, a fortnight of dal bhat can get very dull, very quickly. Which is why Morocco’s tagines come as such a delight. Even on the longest camping trek, resourceful cooks knock up a different take on delectable stews and couscous each night, perked up with apricots or hearty with lamb, and always laden with tasty vegetables.

Another bonus is the timing of the trekking season. In our spring and summer months, while the Himalaya are sluiced by the summer monsoon and South America’s Andes shiver in the antipodean winter, the Atlas is ripe for exploration – there’s no need to wait for autumn to take to the mountain paths. Ideal for teachers and others constrained by school holidays.

The rugged Atlas range, stretching down the spine of Morocco, has become something of a connoisseur’s alternative

84

adventureworldwide.co.uk

But the main attraction is the trekking itself, which rivals any in the world, with challenges to test the most experienced walker. Though Jebel Toubkal, North Africa’s loftiest summit, is a ‘mere’ 4,167m, the ascent from the base-camp refuge is nearly 1,000m up steep scree – it’s no

cakewalk. After a dawn start on summit day, the vistas from the top, across peak after 3,000m+ peak, are heart-stopping, and the approach circuit through the Atlas tackles high passes topping 3,500m. And while the absolute heights aren’t as epic as those in, say, Nepal, the scenery certainly doesn’t disappoint – no surprise that Martin Scorsese used the High Atlas as the location for his film Kundun, standing in for the Tibetan Himalaya. Varied, too: as well as the wind-scoured high peaks and plateaus, on the Atlas Traverse you’ll camp alongside the region’s most beautiful, cobalt-blue mountain lake, Ifni. And you’ll traverse lush valleys dotted with fortified granaries and marabouts (tombs of holy men), shepherds guarding grazing goats and sheep, and Berber villages where there’s always a kettle steaming and ready to brew a glass or two of that mountain ‘whisky’.

ESSENTIAL INFORMATION Before your holiday, it’s worth spending time checking what’s included and not included, and how our prices are calculated. Please contact us if you have any questions or need further clarification.

WHAT IS INCLUDED?

LAND ONLY BASIS

AIRPORT TRANSFERS

As we offer such a wide variety of holiday choices, what we include and don’t include also varies. We firmly believe in a clear, concise and fair pricing policy and you will find what’s included in the price of each holiday outlined in brief on the individual holiday page in this brochure and on our website. Further details of what is and what isn’t included can be found in the individual Trip Dossier.

For all our holidays we offer a ‘Land Only’ price. This price does not include international travel and is based on joining at the stated point for the individual holiday in the destination country in the Trip Dossier. Important: If you are purchasing your own air ticket, you should be aware that most of the cheaper airline tickets available for sale on the internet or from low cost carriers are non-refundable in the case of cancellation and will not be protected by our ATOL bonding. For this reason we strongly advise you to check the rules of the ticket when you make a flight booking, and check the limitations of any cancellation insurance policy you have. We cannot be held liable for any losses incurred relating to or as a result of any flight bookings or other travel arrangements you have made yourself including you having to cancel your holiday due to travel disruption. Please also refer to the specific joining arrangements, transfers section and Land Only section of the individual Trip Dossier before booking your holiday with us.

For many of our trips there is a wide choice of international flight options. So rather than tying ourselves to one airline and/or route, we will always try to take advantage of special fares, promotions and regional flight options to provide you with the lowest possible flight prices. Consequently, clients are likely to arrive and depart on different flights, making a single group transfer impractical in most cases. Therefore as a general rule, unless otherwise stated in the Trip Dossier, airport transfers are usually not included* in our prices.

PRICING Full details of prices, including seasonal price variations etc., can be found on our website. We reserve the right to revise the prices of any of the holidays shown in our brochure and/or on our website. Prices indicated in this brochure are ‘from’ prices only. Please note: if booking a 2016 holiday; prices, dates and itineraries quoted are provisional and may be subject to change.

FLIGHT INCLUSIVE You can combine our Land Only holidays with international flights as a Flight Inclusive package. We are fully bonded with the Civil Aviation Authority and hold a full ATOL license so we can book flights with most airlines. International flight prices are variable and usually can only be guaranteed at the time of booking. The ‘from price’ shown for all flights in this brochure are a guideline only to help you decide whether the holiday we are offering is within your budget. These prices are based on flight costs obtained by our team in October 2015 and were the lowest fares available on this date from London airports with either a scheduled or low cost airline. In some instances where 2016 fares were unavailable on these dates, we have used an estimated price based on 2015 fares. These guideline prices are not fixed and do not include our booking fee, or additional charges some airlines may charge (e.g. baggage). As flight prices will vary considerably according to your specific travel dates, seat availability, preferred airline and peak travel periods, please bear in mind that these fares may no longer be available at the time you book your holiday or the dates you are travelling. Please contact us for an up to date flight price quote for your preferred travel dates and regional departure options.

90

adventureworldwide.co.uk

GROUP SIZES For all of our scheduled, guided group trips there is both a minimum and maximum group size. These are stated on the individual holiday trip page on our website. To enable a trip to go ahead, the minimum number of participants required must be reached. Once the minimum number is reached, the trip status will become ‘Guaranteed to Run’. We reserve the right to guarantee and operate a trip departure below the stated minimum number of participants at our discretion.

SOLO TRAVELLERS There is no compulsory single supplement charge for any solo/single person booking one of our scheduled group trips. If you are a single/ solo traveller on one of our small group trips you will be sharing accommodation with someone of the same gender where applicable. If you prefer not to share then you can request single accommodation where applicable/available for a supplementary charge.

GUIDES & TOUR LEADERS For all of our guided group trips, a professional, qualified and experienced English-speaking guide is provided and acts as the overall tour leader.

If you do require an airport arrival and/or departure transfer, we can arrange this for you at a small extra cost - please see our website or ask your consultant for details. Alternatively, you may choose to organise your own taxi or use local transport to reach the Joining Point of the tour. The choice is yours. It’s worth noting that there can be a significant price advantage in offering such flexibility with regard to international airfares, and this far outweighs the relatively insignificant cost of a transfer. So, rather than build the transfer cost into the selling price for everyone, we give you the choice. *On some trips – where it is difficult to arrange your own transfer to the Joining Point – we include a timed transfer in the trip price. Please see the Trip Dossier or contact your consultant for details.

LOCALLY BOOKED ACTIVITIES Whilst on your Adventure Worldwide holiday there may well be time or opportunity to arrange or book additional activities or excursions locally. Any additional services which are not detailed as part of the original package, quoted and detailed as part of the Chameleon Worldwide sales confirmation or pre-departure documents will be considered as a separate agreement formed directly between you, the customer, and the local company. Any damages or dispute arising from this agreement will therefore be between you and the local company and subject to local law.

BAGGAGE

Know before you go

IMPORTANT WARNING

Please ensure you use the correct type of baggage for your chosen holiday. Please refer to the baggage section in the individual Trip Dossier for more specific information about what to use for your main baggage and any weight restrictions.

Adventure Worldwide are fully committed to the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office’s “Know before you go” campaign. We thoroughly recommend that all Adventure Worldwide clients visit the FCO website – www.fco.gov.uk. If you have any questions or concerns about government travel advice to your chosen country please contact the Adventure Worldwide office. It is not our policy to provide destination information (e.g. laws, culture etc.) beyond the bounds of the trip itself. As there are a large number of country/destination travel guide books available, we strongly recommend you obtain a travel guide book relevant to your chosen destination before you travel.

Our holidays are adventurous, and many travel to remote areas and/or to countries less developed than the United Kingdom and are frequently unable to meet or provide standards usually expected by UK tourists. Despite painstaking planning and organisation, many of our holidays should not be taken for granted like regular mass tourism type holidays. Many things in less-developed countries can be less predictable than in the United Kingdom, and may not have the same standards of emergency medical and rescue services. Transport can be, and often is, unreliable and uncomfortable, and accommodation will often not approach the standards of the United Kingdom, both in remote areas and major conurbations too. If you are not prepared for this you should not travel with us.

ACCOMMODATION The accommodation we offer on our adventure holidays is as varied as the holidays themselves! On one holiday alone you may find yourself staying in a 3* hotel, a rustic and remote village house and a yurt! Details of the accommodation used can be found in the individual Trip Dossier. As a general rule we use mid-range accommodation where available. Our itineraries are planned around the quality of the adventure first and foremost. For many of our trips we do not name specific accommodation in advance, but indicate a type of accommodation (e.g. hotel, pension, tent etc.), as the specific accommodation used may vary from holiday to holiday depending on availability.

ALTITUDE Where our trips involve going to altitudes above 2,000m, the maximum altitudes involved for these trips are indicated on the relevant trip page on our website. The effects of altitude are something that you should be aware of and to combat the effects of altitude our itineraries are carefully planned to allow most people adequate acclimatisation. Generally speaking most people will acclimatise to the altitudes involved on our trips, although it is important to understand that people often acclimatise at different rates. More details regarding altitude can be found in the ‘Essential Information’ section of our website, which we strongly recommend you read and contact us if you have any concerns.

visas & vaccinations To check whether a visa is required and for the most up-to-date visa information for the country you are visiting please visit our website. We always recommend visiting your doctor and dentist for a check-up before travelling. Either your GP or a specialist vaccination centre will also have access to the most up-to-date information on vaccinations and medical precautions for the country.

Dietary requirements Vegetarians can usually be catered for on most of our trips, however in certain destinations you may find vegetarian options very limited. If you have other special dietary requirements it is important that you discuss these before booking. While we will do our best to pass on any dietary details you provide us with, we cannot always guarantee that such requests can always be delivered. On many trips special dietary requirements cannot be catered for. Note that we cannot provide separate menus and cannot accept any liability for any problems arising from special dietary requirements.

please book early Booking early usually means you can take advantage of the lowest airfares. Booking early also means you can be more certain of a place on your chosen holiday. Where a particular trip requires a minimum number of participants to reach guaranteed operational status, it is clearly in the best interests of all those wishing to take part to book as early as possible. Of course we understand that it isn’t always possible to book well in advance, therefore we do not impose a late booking charge. However, higher air fares and restricted availability are more likely to be the result of booking late.

The unpredictable nature of travelling to other countries means that our published holiday itineraries are statements of intent and not contractual obligations. Many factors (e.g. weather, transport problems, political instability etc.) can dictate the necessity to make an enforced change to an itinerary at very short notice, sometimes even during the course of the holiday itself. Naturally, we (and our local agents) will always do everything we can to minimise any changes and/or disruption. However, we cannot be held responsible for the results of enforced changes or delays, irrespective of their cause. As all our holidays are adventurous, to ‘expect the unexpected’ is the norm. Consequently it pays dividends to travel with a sense of adventure, humour and the philosophy to accept that other countries in the world are not the same as the United Kingdom. Although the vast majority of our holidays run smoothly, if you are not able to appreciate and accept that travelling to other countries and remote areas (even within Europe) means many things will not always be of the same standard, or happen the same way as in the United Kingdom, please do not book your holiday with us.

Visas & passports

Before you travel you must ensure that you are in possession of a full passport (with at least six months’ validity from the date of your return to the UK). Allow at least one to two months when applying for a new passport. It is also your responsibility to ensure that you have the necessary visa(s) to enter or transit any countries visited during your journey. Visa requirements are shown here but please bear in mind that this information may be subject to change. We strongly advise you to refer to the relevant embassy website before travel for the latest Visa information and advice. At Adventure Worldwide, we offer a visa service with complimentary form filling. Please ask your consultant when booking, you can add visas to the cost of your trip or buy visas separately through our website all powered by The Visa Machine, experts in adventure travel visas. Passports and completed application forms are normally required six weeks prior to departure date. Important Note: You should also allow for postage from/to your mailing address. Fees are normally charged for visas. For a fee, the Post Office will cover against consequential loss of passports. Some countries refuse admission to travellers not meeting their accepted standards of dress/appearance (even if holding a visa). Entry may be refused to certain countries if the passport bears stamps/visas (valid or expired) for Israel.

BOOKING CONDITIONS All bookings are subject to our full Booking Conditions which appear on our website adventureworldwide.co.uk. A copy of these can also be e-mailed or posted to you on request. By asking us to make your booking, you confirm you have had access to and agree to the full Booking Conditions which you should read. The Booking Conditions provide for the payment of cancellation charges if you cancel or fail to make payment when due. They also include limitations and exclusions of our liability to you. For international travel by air, sea or rail, our liabilities are limited and excluded as if we were a carrier within the applicable international convention or EU regulation (for example, the Montreal Convention, the EC Regulation on Air Carrier Liability and the Athens Convention). A surcharge may be payable in limited circumstances where certain costs increase after booking. Your contract will be with Chameleon Worldwide Travel Limited (registered in England with number: 7018224) of Long Barn South, Sutton Manor Farm, Bishops Sutton, Alresford SO24 0AA. For all bookings a binding contract between you us only comes into existence when we despatch our written confirmation of booking to you. We hold an Air Travel Organiser’s Licence issued by the Civil Aviation Authority (ATOL number 10186). When you buy an ATOL protected flight or flight inclusive holiday from us, you will receive an ATOL Certificate. This lists what is financially protected, where you can get information on what this means for you and who to contact if things go wrong. We, or the suppliers identified on your ATOL Certificate, will provide you with the services listed on the ATOL Certificate (or a suitable alternative). In some cases, where neither we nor the supplier are able to do so for reasons of insolvency, an alternative ATOL holder may provide you with services you have bought or a suitable alternative (at no extra cost to you). You agree to accept that in those circumstances the alternative ATOL holder will perform those obligations and you agree to pay any money outstanding to be paid by you under your contract to that alternative ATOL holder. However, you also agree that in some cases it will not be possible to appoint an alternative ATOL holder, in which case you will be entitled to make a claim under the ATOL scheme (or your credit card issuer where applicable). If we, or the suppliers identified on your ATOL certificate, are unable to provide the services listed (or a suitable alternative, through an alternative ATOL holder or otherwise) for reasons of insolvency, the Trustees of the Air Travel Trust may make a payment to (or confer a benefit on) you under the ATOL scheme. You agree that in return for such a payment or benefit, you assign absolutely to those Trustees any claims which you have or may have arising out of or relating to the non-provision of the services, including any claim against us, the travel agent or your credit card issuer where applicable. You also agree that any such claims may be re-assigned to another body, if that other body has paid sums you have claimed under the ATOL scheme. The flights and flight-inclusive holidays we arrange are ATOL protected providing they are made available in the UK. For further information visit the ATOL website at www.atol.org.uk. The Association of Bonded Travel Organisers Trust Limited (ABTOT) provides financial protection under the Package Travel, Package Holidays and Package Tours Regulations 1992 for Chameleon Worldwide Travel Ltd., and in the event of their insolvency, protection is provided for the following: 1. non-flight packages commencing in and returning to the UK; 2. non-flight packages commencing and returning to a country other than the UK; and 3. flight inclusive packages that commence outside of the UK, which are sold to customers outside of the UK. 1, 2 and 3 provides for a refund in the event you have not yet travelled. 1 and 3 provides for repatriation. Please note that bookings made outside the UK are only protected by ABTOT when purchased directly with Chameleon Worldwide Travel Ltd.

We are a member of ABTA (ABTA number Y0185). ABTA and ABTA members help holidaymakers to get the most from their travel and assist them when things do not go according to plan. We are obliged to maintain a high standard of service to you by ABTA’s Code of Conduct. For further information about ABTA, the Code of Conduct and the arbitration scheme available to you if you have a complaint (see clause 23 of our full Booking Conditions), contact ABTA at 30 Park Street, London, SE1 9EQ or see www.abta.com. Some of the holidays featured in this brochure require a minimum number of participants before we can operate them. The applicable minimum number depends on various factors and varies from tour to tour. If the group size drops below the minimum number, we reserve the right either to cancel or to run the trip. There is therefore no guarantee that the holiday will have more than one family participating. We promise to advise you no later than 6 weeks prior to departure if we have to cancel your holiday due to lack of numbers. Clause 5 of our full Booking Conditions will then apply. For groups, the price per person given at the time of booking is based on a particular number of participants. If the group size changes at any time prior to departure (including where confirmed participants cancel without being substituted and pay less than 100% cancellation charges), we reserve the right to re-cost the trip and the per person price. Any increase in the price will be payable by all remaining participants. The increase will not be a surcharge and accordingly will not be subject to the surcharge provision set out in clause 4 of our full Booking Conditions. All participants must be in possession of a valid passport and all visas, permits and certificates, including medical certificates required for the whole of the holiday booked. It is your responsibility to obtain these unless you are expressly advised otherwise by us. All information and advice given by us on visas, vaccinations, climate, clothing, baggage, special equipment etc. is given in good faith. The lead passenger must ensure that all participants are in possession of all necessary travel and health documents before departure. All costs incurred in obtaining such documentation must be paid by you. We regret we cannot accept any liability if you are refused entry onto any transport or into any country due to failure on your part to carry correct documentation. If you are not a British citizen or hold a non British passport, you must check passport and visa requirements with the embassy or consulate of the country(ies) to or through which you are intending to travel. If failure to have any necessary travel or other documents results in fines, surcharges or other financial penalty being imposed on us or costs incurred by us, you will be responsible for reimbursing us accordingly. We require details of the passports held by all participants no later than 6 weeks prior to departure. A full British passport usually presently takes approximately 2 to 4 weeks to obtain unless you are 16 or over and are applying for a first passport. The UK Passport Service has to confirm your identity before issuing such a passport and may ask applicants to attend an interview in order to do this. A minimum of 6 weeks should be allowed in this case. If any participant does not have a passport or will need to renew it prior to departure, they are recommended to apply at least 3 months in advance. For travel to and via the USA, every person travelling (including children) must have a visa unless they qualify for the Visa Waiver Program (VWP). Most British citizens travelling on holiday will qualify for the VWP but please see the important note below. All visitors who are eligible for the VWP must now apply for authorisation to travel to the US in advance in accordance with the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA). For authorisation to travel you must complete an online application on the ESTA website (details below) at least 72 hours before your flight to the US departs but you are recommended to apply earlier. Providing the application is accepted, you will be provided with approval via the website.

Approval is usually provided very quickly but can take up to 72 hours if data needs to be checked. You should make a note of the ESTA approval number when you receive it. Please note; authorisation to travel under ESTA does not guarantee entry into the United States; that decision rests with the immigration official at the point of entry in the same way that travellers currently entering the U.S. under the Visa Waiver Program or with a visa are subject to inspection. Warning: If your passport has ever been reported lost or stolen to the authorities and then recovered, please do not attempt to use it for travel to the United States. If you input the passport details into ESTA, your application will be denied. It is your responsibility to obtain ESTA approval or a US visa if required. If you fail to obtain authorisation to travel through the ESTA website or a US visa in advance of travel, you will not be allowed on your outbound flight to the US. Full cancellation charges will then apply. The ESTA website can be found at https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov/esta Important note: Not all British visitors to the USA will qualify for the Visa Waiver Program. You cannot apply for the VWP and will require a visa if you do not have a machine readable passport. All new style, burgundy coloured UK passports are machine readable. You will also need to apply for a visa if you have ever been arrested (even if you were not convicted of an offence) or have a criminal record of any description. Other exemptions also apply. If you are in any doubt as to whether you may require a visa, please contact the US Embassy, Consular Information Unit, 24 Grosvenor Square, London W1A 1AE or visit the website www.usembassy.org.uk before making your booking. Further information on entry requirements for the USA is available at http://travel.state.gov. You must check entry requirements at the time of booking and in good time before departure as requirements may change. Requirements generally and for any country may change and you must check the up to date position in good time before departure with the embassy or consulate of the country(ies) you are travelling through and to. It is your responsibility to ensure you are aware of all recommended vaccinations and health precautions in good time before departure. Details are available from your GP surgery and from the National Travel Health Network and Centre www. nathnac.org. Information on health abroad is also available on www.nhs.uk/Livewell/Travelhealth. For holidays in the EU/EEA you should obtain an EHIC (European Health Insurance Card) prior to departure from www.ehic.org.uk. An EHIC is not a substitute for travel insurance. Vaccination and other health requirements/recommendations are subject to change at any time for any destination. Please therefore check with a doctor or clinic not less than six weeks prior to departure to ensure that you have met the necessary requirements and have the applicable information. The Foreign and Commonwealth Office publishes regularly updated travel information on its website www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice which you are recommended to consult before booking and in good time before departure. In the event of any flight delay or cancellation at your UK or overseas point of departure, the airline is responsible for providing such assistance as may legally be required by the Denied Boarding Regulations. The ferry, tunnel or rail operator is similarly responsible in relation to any delayed or cancelled sea crossing or international rail departure. Except where otherwise stated in our brochure or on our website, we regret we cannot provide any assistance in such circumstances other than information and advice to the extent we are in a position to do so. The information contained in our brochure is believed correct to the best of our knowledge at the time of printing or publication. However, errors may occasionally occur and information may subsequently change. You must therefore ensure you check all details of your chosen tour (including the price) with us at the time of booking.
