WELCOME

WELCOME TO THE BEAUTIFUL CITY OF TOCCOA. ORIGINALLY CALLED “TOCCOAH” (THE CHEROKEE WORD FOR BEAUTIFUL), THE CITY RESTS IN THE FOOTHILLS OF THE SCENIC APPALACHIAN MOUNTAINS IN NORTHEAST GEORGIA. The heart of the city lies in its historic downtown district. Downtown Toccoa is almost like stepping into the past. The storefronts are known for their award-winning revitalization and restoration projects, and the downtown district itself is listed on both the Georgia and National Registers of Historic Places.

The Historic Ritz Theatre at the Schaefer Center, also listed on the Georgia and National Registers, offers theatre, music, and film, all underneath the vibrancy of neon lights. Downtown Toccoa is home to restaurants, boutiques, arts stores, specialty stops, and much more. You can also find a historic walking tour and geocaches for the urban adventurer.

Downtown Toccoa features local restaurants, like the famous Shirley’s Sole Food, as well as wonderfully quaint places to stay, like the Simmons-Bond Inn Bed & Breakfast.

WELCOME

WELCOME TO TOCCOA DDA Chair, Mr. Clint Sanders

The Downtown Development Authority (DDA) leads Main Street Toccoa in implementation of goals set forth by the Toccoa City Commission and in an understanding of the needs of downtown. Made up of seven downtown business and property owners, the DDA has a vested interest in the economic and social well-being of Downtown Toccoa. As the chair of the DDA, I have witnessed Downtown Toccoa’s nonstop rise in entertainment, as well as diversity in shopping. It’s rare to see a small city such as Toccoa with entertainment venues like the Currahee Military Museum, the Historic Ritz Theatre, and the Historic Courthouse all within walking distance of each other. And there’s more than that here in Downtown Toccoa. We have tax and attorney services, elegant salons, wonderful food, books, apparel, and much more. During the Summer, Downtown Toccoa opens its award-winning historic Doyle Street Pool to the public to keep cool and enjoy the weather. Toccoa is a town rich in history, culture, and charm; there’s no better indicator of Toccoa’s beauty than in its historic downtown district. I sincerely hope you enjoy your visit to Downtown Toccoa.

MAIN STREET WELCOME

Community Development Director, Connie Tabor Toccoa’s Main Street program began in 1990 to facilitate the revitalization of downtown Toccoa and improve Toccoa’s quality of life. In 2016, we are continuing our mission to improve Toccoa’s quality of life by strengthening Downtown Toccoa as the heart and soul of our beautiful city. Main Street Toccoa works with community volunteer boards, headed by the DDA, to stimulate long-term investment in the downtown district through business recruitment and retention, all within the context of historic preservation. Main Street Toccoa and the DDA are continuing 2016 downtown development goals:

• Finish renovation and promote the Schaefer Center for var• •

ious kinds of entertainment. Recruit new businesses for downtown & promote existing businesses. Continue beautification projects.

STAFF: Connie Tabor, Keith Kozicki, Christian Hamilton, Vicky King, Sharon Crosby

Goal tasks and accomplishments are being realized. The Schaefer Center has just installed its beautiful historic Ritz marquee, and downtown is in a constant state of promotion and beautification, such as the addition of eight wayfinding signs that have just been installed. Thank you for your support of Downtown Toccoa.

LOCAL & REGIONAL FAVORITES

1. CAMP TOCCOA AT CURRAHEE This historic site may best be known as the location and training facility for the famous group of soldiers depicted in HBO’s Band of Brothers. Camp Toccoa is in a state of revitalization and focuses upon historic accuracy and restoration to tell the stories of the brave men who trained there. Camp Toccoa at Currahee is also home to Toccoa’s most famous hiking and rock climbing site, Currahee Mountain, which rises to an elevation of 1,740 feet. Currahee, meaning “stands alone,” is located at the beginning of the Appalachian Mountains.

2. CURRAHEE MILITARY MUSEUM The museum, located in Downtown Toccoa, features a large and extraordinary collection of memorabilia from the more than 18,000 young men who trained as paratroopers at Camp Toccoa. These men, all members of the 506th, 501st, 511th, and 517th Paratrooper Infantry Regiments, endured heavy combat during WWII, fighting from France to Germany in defense of American liberty and lives.

3. HISTORIC STEPHENS CO. COURTHOUSE Constructed in 1907, the Stephens County Courthouse was built as the official seat of government for the relatively new Stephens County. While a new government building currently serves as the location for governance, the historic courthouse, faithfully renovated in 2009, still holds certain county offices. The old courtroom on the second floor is worth the visit, and may be reminiscent of historic courtrooms seen throughout the early to mid-1900s.

4. HISTORIC DOWNTOWN TOCCOA The City of Toccoa was charted in 1874 as a railroad town. Today, it remains one of only three stops on the Southern Crescent Amtrak line in Georgia. Downtown Toccoa also features antique, boutique, and specialty shops. It is anchored by the Historic Ritz Theatre at the Schaefer Center and the Doyle Street Pool. Additionally, city and county government buildings are located downtown.

5. TOCCOA FALLS

6. PAUL ANDERSON PARK

This beautiful waterfall rests on the quaint 1,100-acre wooded campus of Toccoa Falls College. At 186 feet high, Toccoa Falls is one of the tallest waterfalls east of the Mississippi River. In fact, it is taller than Niagara Falls. The falls are available for public viewing from 8:30 am to sundown for a nominal fee.

Celebrating the legacy of Paul Edward Anderson (1932-1994), an Olympic gold medalist weightlifter, this beautiful park is a tribute to Anderson’s life. Paul Anderson is also known for back-lifting 6,270 pounds, the greatest weight ever lifted by a human being. As a devout Christian, Paul and his wife, Glenda, later founded the Paul Anderson Youth Home in Vidalia, Georgia.

7. TUGALOO BEND HERITAGE SITE An 87-acre site located on the Tugaloo River, the Tugaloo Bend Heritage Site is home to Estatoe, a Cherokee village, and subsequently, the site of a 19th and 20th century operating farm. Today, there is a pavilion, public restrooms, a picnic area, and walking trails (including a handicap accessible trail). Part of the walking trail is located next to the Tugalo River. The Tugaloo Bend Heritage Site is open on the weekends for general admission, as well as during the week by appointment. There is no charge for admission.

LOCAL SPOTLIGHT: THE STAR THEATRE

TRAVEL BACK IN TIME Stepping inside the beautifully restored Star Theatre, one would expect that it’s always looked the way it currently does: high, pressed tin ceilings, an early 1900s Empire-style observation window above the stage, rich hardwood floors, and of course, a classic exterior ticket booth with a 240-degree view. It hasn’t always looked this way though, and certainly not recently.

“IT WAS DEFINITELY A LOT OF WORK. I’M PROUD OF IT.” SAYS LOCAL BUILDING OWNER, DESIGNER, AND CONTRACTOR, CHRIS IRVIN. Working on every aspect from design to construction, Irvin calls the Star Theatre a “labor of love,” with “the future of Downtown Toccoa in mind.” Built between 1913 and 1917, or perhaps even sooner, Irvin explains that the floors were once sloped toward the stage (where the movie screen was).

In the early days of silent pictures, there would have been a pianist playing along to the movie, and later, a record player as technology improved. In the early 1990s, the Star served as both a dry cleaner and barber shop. “It was in pretty bad condition when I acquired it,” explains Irvin. But one would never be able to tell. Irvin has several ideas for the Star Theatre’s future business use. He would love to see it as a brick oven dinner joint, or an event center. He plans to install a big screen, just like in its early days. Irvin finishes his tour of the Star by calling its renovation a “zealous pursuit in the promotion of progress in the community.” If the future of Downtown Toccoa is handled as carefully, faithfully, and anticipatively as Irvin’s vision, shown by his dedication to the history of his building, then there is certainly nothing to worry about.

GETTING DOWNTOWN

GETTING DOWNTOWN AMTRAK AND VISITOR’S CENTER While Stephens County is certainly accessible via the Amtrak Line and the R.G. LeTourneau Airfield, a new road has opened Toccoa up to much of Northeast Georgia. The New Highway 17 expansion allows for ease of travel from much of Stephens and Habersham Counties. The road, known as the “Currahee Parkway,” connects Toccoa to Lavonia, Gainesville, and even Atlanta. The City of Toccoa worked with the Georgia Department of Transportation to build this road. Widening began in 2013, and final costs are expected to total approximately $80 million. The new Georgia Highway 17 will help to serve as an alternate, and far more scenic, corridor across Northeast Georgia, and down to Atlanta. This road expansion serves as just another means of making beautiful Toccoa more accessible from multiple areas of Georgia.

THE HISTORIC RITZ THEATRE

THE RITZ THEATRE MARQUEE Imagine, if you will, that you’re standing in a long line outside of a theatre. Perhaps 300 people are wrapped around the building. Of course, you’re standing under an extruding neon-lit marquee that says “RITZ”, so the summer heat isn’t entirely unbearable. Occasionally, small glass bulbs twinkle around the marquee, casting a faint light when the clouds manage to cover the light of the sun. You look up and see that the marquee says in simple font “ONCE UPON A HORSE” and “LAST BLITZKRIEG,” two popular films from the late 1950’s. You smell the rich, buttery popcorn wafting from the open theatre door and anticipate the cooler air inside.

But it’s not the late 1950’s. It’s actually August of 2016, though the marquee and excited chatter would seem to indicate otherwise. The large crowd isn’t waiting to see the advertised films. In fact, those films aren’t being shown at all. And the message board on that marquee isn’t a simple letter board. It’s actually a state-of-the-art electronic message board.

THE COMMUNITY HAS GATHERED, NOT FOR A MOVIE, BUT FOR THE RE-INSTALLATION OF THE “RITZ” MARQUEE ON THE HISTORIC RITZ THEATRE IN DOWNTOWN TOCCOA.

AND WHAT A SIGHT TO BEHOLD.

2016

LIVING ON MAIN STREET / THE HISTORIC RITZ THEATRE

In 2015, the City of Toccoa secured funding from the famous Fox Theatre Institute in Atlanta for a recreation of the historic marquee. This marquee would be a faithful construction of the original, down to the placement of the neon and bulb lighting. Of course, in keeping with the times, the City opted to install a state-of-the-art electronic message board as opposed to a typical letter board. The marquee was constructed, and the City of Toccoa chose to host an event, “Puttin’ on the Ritz,” on August 25, 2016. Hollywood is back in small-town Toccoa. Every single day, residents of the city and surrounding areas see the marquee in the heart of downtown. It is anticipated that economic revitaliza-

tion will boom in Downtown Toccoa. Foot traffic will increase. And doesn’t any good story have a happy ending? Imagine that, as you look up at that marquee, right here in 2016, you’re transported back to the 1950’s. Would anything really seem that different? After all, the Ritz is back in town. We thought one of the best ways to celebrate the installation of the marquee was to recreate the famous Ritz Theatre photograph from circa 1959. So, at “Puttin’ on the Ritz,” we redid it. Take a look at the pictures on these pages. We hope you’ll be proud of the careful and devoted historic renovation that has occurred at the Ritz Theatre at the Schaefer Center.

DID YOU KNOW?

DID YOU KNOW? Speaking of our wonderful Ritz Theatre, did you know that, since 2012, the City of Toccoa has received grants from multiple state, federal, and private institutions, such as:

• The Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Historic Preservation Division

• The Georgia Department of Economic Development • The United States Department of Agriculture • The Fox Theatre Institute, and • The Appalachian Regional Commission Without the support of these organizations, the restoration of the Ritz would be merely a dream. In addition, local organizations have sponsored the Ritz with their support, programming, and dedication to its preservation. Most recently, Main Street Toccoa installed free Wi-Fi at the Ritz Theatre at the Schaefer Center. Enjoy the internet before your anticipated show!

A FEW MORE THINGS: • Thus far in 2016, there have been 76 bookings at the

Schaefer Center, with a total community attendance of 12,441 people. This is already more than 2015’s 62 bookings, with 7,945 attendees.

• The annual Ida Cox Music Series draws enthusiastic

crowds to Doyle Street in the Summer months of June and July. Attendees enjoy a closed off street, live music, food and drinks, and downtown shopping. Plan on attending for Ida Cox 2017, and don’t forget to bring a lawn chair!

• Main Street Toccoa recently implemented an official

Main Street Toccoa phone application. You’ll find all of the Main Street businesses, events, and activities on the application, so download it on the Apple Store or through Google Play today.

REMAKING THE PAST: CAMP TOCCOA

CAMP TOCCOA AT CURRAHEE

“It had been pretty much abandoned,” Camp Toccoa at Currahee President, Gary Bellamy, describes Camp Toccoa in 2012 when the restoration project began. “It has gone through a lot, but we’ve just finished our facility here.” Bellamy is referring to the “PX” (standing for “Post Exchange”), an original building of Camp Toccoa which once housed supplies and other elements necessary to the camp. Bellamy describes the project, now in 2016, as being at a point “where it’s even more fun” because of the “steam” it’s taken on. According to Bellamy, 99% of the materials for the new pavilion being built have been donated.

AFTER THE PAVILION IS COMPLETED, CAMP TOCCOA AT CURRAHEE PLANS TO BUILD FOUR BARRACKS USING THE ORIGINAL OUTSIDE PANELS FROM THE WWII-ERA BUILDINGS LOCATED ON THE PROPERTY. They are also fundraising for a C-47 plane to serve as a set piece for the site. “The barracks are as far out as we have gotten,” says Bellamy, “but we have a lot of ideas we are throwing around.” He’s right about the excitement that Camp Toccoa at Currahee is eliciting. Bellamy explains that Stephen Ambrose Tours (originated by the author of Band of Brothers)

brought a group through recently, and that people from across the world come to pay respect, from Seattle to Holland to Germany as late as the last month. Patrick Hall, construction coordinator for Camp Toccoa, explains that they have seen visitors from “80 different countries, all states in the U.S., and all U.S. territories.” It certainly does seem like the word is spreading. Currahee comes from the Cherokee word for stands alone. However, the soldiers who trained at Camp Toccoa back in the 1940s used as their motto, “We stand alone… together.” And uniting the community together to revitalize Camp Toccoa at Currahee is certainly the goal of the project. With the support of everyone from local residents, military historians, interested parties, those with wistful memories of Camp Toccoa, or those seeing it for the first time, it can thrive as a remembrance of lives and friends lost and victory achieved in the defense of American liberty. “It’s worth it. Totally worth it,” says Hall. Bellamy explains that the project is funded through donations, monetarily or through material supply. Donations can be made at www.camptoccoaatcurrahee.com

WAYFINDING SIGNAGE

WAYFINDING SIGNAGE Summer 2016 saw Main Street Toccoa’s implementation of Downtown Toccoa wayfinding signage, partially sponsored through a grant from the Georgia Department of Economic Development. There are eight beautiful downtown signs located at various egresses and thoroughfares within reasonable accessibility to Downtown Toccoa. Each sign is meticulously crafted with a light stone base, a firm support structure, and a handcrafted sign highlighting various attractions, and of course, the way to Downtown. It is believed that these wayfinding signs will allow for greater economic activity in Toccoa’s historic downtown district. Additionally, they provide an attractive element in Toccoa’s continuing downtown streetscape project.

NEXT TIME YOU SEE ONE OF THOSE SIGNS, FOLLOW IT DOWNTOWN! You’ll find everything from boutique retail to delectable cuisine. Main Street Toccoa plans to implement additional attractive wayfinding signage in the future.
