2010 Castrol Power1 NZSBK Review -100 page hardcover preview

Page 1

From the first round at Ruapuna in Christchurch, through visits to Teretonga Park Raceway in Invercargill, Levels International Raceway in Timaru, Manfeild Autocourse near Palmerston North and a nail-biting final at the new circuit at Hampton Downs Motorsport Park just south of Auckland, teams and riders pushed themselves and each other to the limit, and those who have won titles this year can be justifably proud of their achievements. For the fans at each round, the riders, teams, sponsors and supporters, long time road-racing photographer Andrew Bright is pleased to present a "best of" selection of action, people and atmosphere images from this year's Championship. Inside you'll find a quality selection of photos from all five rounds, backed by full Championship results, making the 2010 Castrol Power1 New Zealand Superbike Championship Review a must-have for anyone involved in New Zealand road-racing.

Introduction

Crisis? What Crisis? Still suffering the flow-on effects of the Global Financial Crisis, it's a fair bet that riders in this year's New Zealand Superbike Championship have been funding their racing more than ever. And despite the personal financial risk, on-track aggression, speed and skill were as plentiful as ever this season. Andrew Stroud and Nick Cole dug particularly deep this year and have been rewarded with superb wins in the Production Superbike and 600cc Sport Production classes respectively. Their main rivals - Robbie Bugden and James Smith - also deserve credit for fighting right 'tll the end, and we can be sure they'll all be back fitter, faster, and more determined in 2011. Glen Williams, Terry Fitzgerald, and Jason Easton continued their year in, year out battles in Formula 3, Alastair Hoogenboezem was truly dominant in 125cc Grand Prix, as were Steve Bron and Dennis Simonsen in the Sidecar class. Geoff Booth crossed the ProTwin Championship off his list despite a nasty crash at Timaru, while Craig Shirrffs and James Smith jointly earned my vote for highlight of the year when they ended up in the gravel trap at Hampton Downs after refusing to submit to each other (or the braking marker) as they raced to the finish line during the final race of the season. After the dust had settled, Craig found he had claimed third spot in the Championship from James by just 9/100 of a second! I can't think of a better example of true racing dedication. Those who were at the track will know what a great season it's been, and for those who weren't and everyone who'd like to look back, I'm pleased to present the 2010 Castrol Power1 New Zealand Superbike Championship Review.

Many thanks to the people who provided the help, information, and inspiration that went into the production and promotion of this book: Todd Sutherland Shane Solomon/Motorcycle Trader and News Cameron Officer/Top Gear Magazine N.Z. Ian Barber/Techbooks Geoff Osborne/Osborne Photographics Lee Howell/Kaptured Andrew Wheeler/AutoMotoPhoto Euan Cameron/SportProMedia Greg Oleson/Nikon New Zealand Jim Tuckerman/Motorycling New Zealand Paul Stewart/M.N.Z. Road Race Commission Maarty Van Booma/Team vB Racing New Zealand 2010 Castrol Power1 New Zealand Superbike Championship organisers, sponsors, admin staff, officials, medics, marshalls, and volunteers Tim and Joan Gibbes Mick Ruane/Canterbury Motorcycle Club Andrew Lawrence Hamish and Lynda Blair Robbie Bugden & Red Fenton/Triple R Superbike ...and of course the teams and riders who provided all the action!
