Dominic Gomersall writes:

The recent Royal visit for the Maundy Thursday service seems to highlight, yet again, how Leicester has become the beacon and leading City of the Midlands. Kim and I were extremely privileged to be asked to a reception and lunch in St Martin’s House after the service – and what an inspiration our royal family is. From seeing the streets ten deep with cheering crowds, to meeting the Queen and Prince Philip in person, it was a tremendous and uplifting day. Of course, it is sad that since the visit, Prince Philip has announced his retirement from official duties, so this was the royal couple’s last visit to Leicestershire. In our family business, I do hope the next generation, Freddie, can take the reins of Lumbers before I get to the age of 95!! It was equally lovely that the procession route, along with the recent Leicester City victory parade and King Richard III interment, passed the front of our store. The TV cameras emphasized how the shop has blossomed on the High Street. The city centre continues to evolve with retail losses and additions, but overall it is a far more attractive and welcoming city centre than our near city rivals and we are pleased with the news of some potentially exciting new retail businesses to our district. I believe Lumbers continues to add vibrancy to the High Street and valuable input into the Leicester business community. One of our recent initiatives was to establish a trading association of local businesses working together to improve the city centre experience for visitors and shoppers. As a business, we continue to try innovative events and ranges to further our development. They all contributed to us winning the National Association of Goldsmith’s UK Jewellery Business of the Year for 2016 – this is the highest tribute of our industry and brings us great pride. I must thank my entire team for all their hard work and the contributions they made towards us winning this fantastic accolade. I am especially pleased to win the award some 14 years after we first won it when I moved the business to Leah Marks House on Market Street. I feel it once again vindicates the massive move we undertook two years ago to our new emporium. I am looking forward to the summer holiday period before we get to the business end of the year again. We have Maddie, my step daughter, working hard on creating our very own ‘Catazine’. This will be a combination of a catalogue of our stunning products interspersed by interesting articles from our leading brands. It will be an exciting annual addition to the business. We also have one or two exciting, exclusive new ranges to announce that will further complement and enhance our offering. We have extended lines from our watch houses and events to celebrate the brands. Finally, a paragraph of gratitude! Thank you to the Cathedral and Dean David who kindly invited us to meet the Queen, to my team for winning the Retailer of the Year 2016 title and to my family for their support – as always. Lastly to you… for reading my column and for continuing to be an enthusiast of Lumbers!

THE NAME’S HARRIS, NAOMIE HARRIS OBE… Since her debut as Miss Moneypenny in 2012’s Skyfall, the highest grossing Bond film of all time, Naomie Harris’ star has been shining bright. Taking on such an iconic role is no mean feat but Naomie has certainly made it her own. No longer is Moneypenny a pen-pushing administrator, relegated to pining after Bond, she is now a field agent, trained to face action and more than capable of taking on 007 himself. In a 2012 interview with The Telegraph, Bond franchise producer, Barbara Broccoli, said of Naomie’s casting, “We wanted someone who could really match up to Bond – and she’s got it.’ Evolving the role, Naomie wasn’t satisfied being dismissed as simply a ‘Bond Girl’. Naomie’s Moneypenny is a 21st century Bond Woman.

BEAUTY, HEALTH AND LIFESTYLE

Born 6 September 1976 in Islington, London, Naomie’s acting career began in 1987 when she won a role in the BBC children’s programme, Simon and the Witch. From here Naomie won other roles, including the lead in the 2002 dramatisation of Zadie Smith’s epic novel, White Teeth. An iconic book, the role won Naomie praise and led to what was arguably her breakthrough movie role; Selena in Danny Boyle’s 28 Days Later, starring alongside hotshots Cillian Murphy and Brendan Gleeson. A fresh take on the zombie genre, the horror flick took $45,063,889 at the box office, despite costing only $8,000,000 to make and saw Naomie become an actress well worth noticing. Speaking of the role, she told reporters, “I credit so much to Danny Boyle. He really gave me a chance when nobody else would at the start of my career when I had no credits to my name.” Danny and Naomie were reunited when in 2011 they worked together on the stage show of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein at The National Theatre, directed by Danny and starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Jonny Lee Miller. Despite not having worked in theatre previously, Naomie says Danny “took a chance again” casting her in the role of Elizabeth. Naomie’s role in the well-received production is described as ‘beautifully played’ by Whatsonstage.com – defining Naomie’s theatre debut as a success. Despite her obvious beauty and innate sense of style, Naomie has avoided being typecast as a ‘Hollywood starlet’, sidestepping the usual romcoms in favour of meatier roles. Speaking of how she selects the roles offered to her, Naomie has been quoted as saying, “I’m always interested in telling stories that have a message because I really do believe that film is so powerful.” Educated at Cambridge University, where she studied Social & Political Science, Naomie is the complete package; brains, beauty and integrity. Her thoughtful career choices have led Naomie to make some interesting choices when it comes to the projects she works on. Films including, Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom – a film that was 16 years in development. The role saw Naomie play Winnie Mandela, covering several decades of the woman’s life from her late teens until her seventies. Filmed in South Africa, making the movie was challenging. In a 2014 interview with The Telegraph, Naomie outlined how she overcame them, “I just had to imagine the sense of injustice I would have felt if I’d lived during apartheid. Not being able to have the same education as my contemporaries, not being able to sit in the same place on a bus. I’m a person who’s all about justice and I felt the rage building up.” Of course, Naomie isn’t afraid to take on less poignant roles. She’s starred in two Pirates of the Caribbean movies (Dead Man’s Chest and At World’s End), playing the role of Tia Dalma, a sorceress with a mysterious past. With movies, such as Pirates of the Caribbean and Michael Mann’s Miami Vice, in which she featured alongside Jamie Foxx, not to mention the Bond movies Skyfall and 2015’s Spectre, raking in the big bucks, Naomie has had her fair share of box office success.

Naomie’s hard work has clearly paid off with ‘Best Supporting Actress’ nominations for her role in Moonlight at the Academy Awards, Golden Globes and Baftas. While she didn’t take home the ‘Best Supporting Actress’ Oscar, Moonlight did scoop the Academy Award for ‘Best Picture’ (albeit amidst controversy when LA LA LAND was mistakenly announced as the winner). Naomie was excited to be attached to the drama, which follows the lead character through three life stages; boyhood, teenage years and adulthood. Grappling with some hard-hitting themes including drugs, poverty and sexuality, Naomie plays the role of Paula, the protagonist’s mother and a drug addict. Taking her time to research this gritty role, Naomie said in an interview with The Evening Standard, “I think this movie is one that doesn’t speak to your head, that it just somehow connects with your heart and that yearning you have for connection. It’s the kind of movie that stays with people for weeks, if not months afterwards.”

While attaching herself to projects such as Moonlight demonstrates Naomie’s desire to flex her acting skills, she isn’t afraid to jump on board major movie productions like her role as Moneypenny in the Bond franchise shows. While the next movie in the Bond series is yet to be announced and speculation over whether Daniel Craig will reprise the role continues to grow, Naomie is certainly not sat waiting for the phone to ring. She already has two movies scheduled for a 2018 release. Jungle Book: Origins sees Naomie plays Nisha, a female wolf in this motion-capture movie. Fans can also catch her in Rampage, a movie based on a 1980s video game in which Naomie takes on the role of a geneticist alongside Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson. Recognition of Naomie’s success isn’t restricted to box office sales and award nominations, she was also recognised in the Queen’s New Year Honours. Awarded an OBE for her services to drama, she said of the honour: “This is really phenomenal. This is representing my country and being recognised for having made a contribution to the nation. It can’t get better than that.”

ALL NEW LEXUS LC

A NEW ERA DAWNS The LC marks the beginning of a new phase for Lexus. This new flagship coupe will set new standards for performance, styling and craftsmanship. UK specification models go into production at the end of May and will be strictly built to order with no stock available at UK Lexus centres. Powered by a 5-litre V8, the rear-wheeldrive coupe will reach the showrooms in the summer of 2017 with a price tag from £76,595 for both the petrol and hybrid versions, making it cheaper than a basic PDK equipped Porsche 911 Carrera and well down on the admittedly more powerful Jaguar F-Type R. Drive is to the rear wheels via a ten-speed direct-drive auto gearbox. In manual mode, when using the paddleshifters, the gearbox reacts quickly

to your commands – the multi-plate clutch system gives performance that Lexus says is comparable with a double-clutch gearbox, but without the wear. The first nine gears are more equally spread than usual for more rhythmic shifting (third and fourth cover the same bandwidth as third in the eight-speed ’box in the RC F) and sure enough you can quickly punch through the gears with very little kick as the ratios swap. The final tenth gear acts as an overdrive to calm everything down when cruising. If you opt for the Sport+ trim model you also get a limited-slip differential and rear-wheel steering. Already the Lexus LC luxury coupe has been named 2016’s Production Car Design of the Year, an honour bestowed by a 20-strong judging panel featuring some of the world’s

top car designers. The peer-reviewed award was presented at a gala ceremony in Geneva on 7th March and is featured in the Car Design Review 4 Yearbook, which was launched the same night. If the new Lexus LC intrigues you, you won’t be alone. Initial demand is sure to outstrip supply so it would definitely pay to start speaking to the team at Lexus Leicester now. You can find out about all the available options on LC and initial orders are being taken now for customers wishing to be amongst the first to be driving the LC in 2017. WHY WE’RE ALL GOING

FOR EMMA

A quick glance through any gossip magazine, tabloid newspaper or online news site and it’s clear to see, this is the year of America’s allsinging, all-dancing golden girl – Emma Stone. Fresh from her Oscar win where she scooped the Academy Award for ‘Best Actress’ in a Leading Role for her part in La La Land, her freshfaced beauty, fiery red hair (she’s actually a natural blond), and girl nextdoor charm make it easy to see why audiences around the world have fallen for Emma.

ASPIRATIONAL.UK.COM

Emma’s movie back catalogue reads well, featuring a mix of wellreceived teen movies, such as Superbad and Easy A along with weightier roles in The Help and Birdman. Born Emily Jean Stone in Arizona on 6 November 1988, Emma’s appetite for acting was whetted when, as a youth, she appeared in a series of amateur productions, leading to a decision aged 15 to pursue a career in acting.

Moving from her native Arizona to Los Angeles with her mother (she finished her education being taught at home), she set about making her dreams a reality. Her instinct paid off and Emma’s big break came in 2004 when she won the role of Laurie Partridge in a talent/reality show called In Search of the Partridge Family. While the role was perhaps not the leap forward she might have hoped for, it did lead on to other TV roles. Emma’s big movie break came three years later, in 2007, in the teen hit – Superbad, the story of a group of geeky high-school friends looking to buy alcohol for a party. The Judd Apatow comedy was a hit with audiences, and while Stone’s role was not leading, she still shone. While she has received critical acclaim in the past (she received her first Academy Award nomination for her supporting actress role in 2015 for Birdman), it is 2017’s La La Land that has sent critics and movie-fans alike ecstatic for Emma. With Oscar buzz surrounding the film from the outset, it is no surprise that the film has won 11 BAFTAS, including ‘Best Film’ and ‘Best Actress’ for Emma, seven Golden Globes, again a best actress award for Emma, and 12 Critics Choice nominations. She also won the award for ‘Outstanding Performance by a Female in a Leading Role’ at the Screen Actors Guild Awards and the film earned 14 Academy Award nominations, winning six Oscars on the night, including ‘Best Song’ and ‘Best Director’. Along with awards, the movie has also raked in the big bucks at the Box Office, taking $300 million to date, not bad for a film made for, the relatively modest sum, in movie terms, of just $30 million. Charting the romance of Stone’s Mia, a budding actress and Sebastian, an ambitious jazz pianist, played by Ryan Gosling, as they fall in love, you’ll be forgiven for thinking so far, so Hollywood rom-com, however the twist in this bittersweet tale is that the pair, sing and dance their way through the story. Speaking to CBS News on what drew her to the role, she said, “I loved the idea that it was set in modern day, that the touches felt very modern, but the feeling of the film was this anamorphic sort of Cinemascope celebration of the musicals that Damien (director), Ryan and I, and many, many people, have fallen in love with through the decades. The combination of it was definitely a tricky balance, but [also] what made it so inspiring.” Playing a struggling actress facing rejection after rejection, is something Emma, like all young actors desperate to make their mark can relate to. She recently described playing the role of Mia as a “cathartic experience” referring to her years auditioning for parts she didn’t get.

In an interview with ENews, Emma remembers, “I wasn’t getting called back for anything when I first moved to LA and so, they just stopped sending me out,” she recalled. “There was a large swath of time where nobody wanted me to come in and that feeling was actually worse than any of the, you know, the initial auditions and being kind of rejected.” These days Emma is very much in demand and those who might have doubted her ability to take on such a role as in La La Land were soon silenced. Training which took three months, paid off with her on-screen performance described as “luminous” by Variety and with The Guardian saying Emma “has never been better, her huge doe eyes radiating wit and intelligence when they’re not filling with tears.” Pairing Emma with Hollywood heavyweight, Ryan Gosling, La La Land isn’t the first time the duo have been cast together. With a fizzing on-screen chemistry, it seems the pairing of Stone and Gosling is box office gold. First working together on 2011’s Crazy, Stupid, Love, a romantic comedy that pitted Gosling’s womanising Jacob against Emma’s Hannah, the film raked in $142.9 million at the global box office and saw the pair go on to star together twice more in 2013’s Gangster Squad and La La Land. While their on-screen chemistry is palpable, off-screen the pair have never been romantically linked. In fact, Emma is very protective of her private life, saying in 2015 to the Wall Street Journal, “See, I never talk about this stuff for this exact reason—because it’s all so speculative and baseless. Once you start responding—once you’re like, ‘No, that’s not true’—then they’re like, ‘Well, if we push enough, we’ll get a comment, so let’s see what else we can make up.’ I understand the interest in it completely because I’ve had it, too. But it’s so special to me that it never feels good to talk about, so I just continually don’t talk about it.”

Her most high-profile romance was with actor, Andrew Garfield whom she met on the set of The Amazing Spider-man. Playing the role of Gwen Stacy, Emma and Andrew (who was in the titular role), played on-screen love interests and love in real-life soon followed, with the pair dating from 2011 to 2015. While roles in the black comedy Birdman, where she played a former addict and the family movie, The Croods where she was the voice of cave girl, Eep, demonstrate Emma’s versatility, it is arguably her comedic roles which have earned her the greatest number of fans. Her breakthrough role, playing Olive Penderghast in 2010’s teen-comedy, Easy A, was a showcase for what fans have come to adore about Emma; relentless cheerfulness, eagerness and just enough geekiness to make her natural beauty disarming. It is hardly surprising that Emma excels in comedy roles, she has credited comedies such as Steve Martin’s, The Jerk, 1977’s Annie Hall, black comedy, Beetlejuice and family comedy Hocus Pocus as the films that made her want to be an actress While Emma is riding high during awards season, her star is set to continue to rise with a number of films slated for release in 2017/18. Up-coming films include the muchanticipated Cruella – Disney’s 101 Dalmatians spin-off, The Favourite, which is set in the reign of Queen Anne, The Croods 2 and Battle of the Sexes, a biography of tennis champ Billie Jean King.

Glastonbudget

Download Festival

Location: Wymeswold, Leicestershire

Location: Donington Park, Leicestershire

When? 26-28 May 2017

When? 9-11 June 2017

Price: Starting from £82 for the weekend.

Price: Starting from £195 for the weekend.

Accommodation: Standard camping comes included, with quiet camping available for family ticketholders. VIP options consist of furnished bell tents with double beds - a home away from home.

Accommodation: Alongside standard camping, there’s a quiet section as well as the cleverly named RIP section, for those who want that extra bit of luxury with their rock music.

Past Tribute Artists: Kazabian, Absolute Bowie, ABBA Revival (obviously not the real deal!)

Past Artists: Muse, Aerosmith, AC/DC

‘Bohemian’s Rhapsody’, ‘Wonderwall’, ‘Thriller’, all absolute classics, and all will be heard drifting across a field in Leicestershire this summer. Unfortunately, Mercury, Gallagher and Jackson won’t be on hand to belt out those hits, but their sound-alikes will be! While Glastonbudget bears no resemblance to its almost namesake, the tribute acts that fill its bill across the weekend are generally the best around and it offers an alternative to the rest of the festivals out there.

Known for its loud and heavy rock music, the spiritual successor to the infamous, ‘Monsters of Rock’ events held during the 80s and 90s, Download has been rolling for almost 15 years at the Donington Park race circuit. The early-June timing can lead to some temperamental weather to say the least and has resulted in mud baths in the past. That doesn’t stop the talent or the visitors coming, though, with the biggest current rock bands around (Biffy Clyro, Muse) mixing it with genre legends (Aerosmith, AC/DC) every single year.

Splendour Festival

Y-Not Festival

Location: Wollaton Park, Nottingham

Location: Matlock, Derbyshire

When? 22 July 2017

When? 27-30 July 2017

Price: Starting from £39 for the day.

Price: Starting from £94 for the weekend.

Accommodation: No on-site accommodation, although there are plenty of hotels nearby.

Accommodation: Standard camping is included, with campervans also welcomed. Pre-set tipis are on offer, alongside the Peak Club VIP area, featuring luxurious toilets, showers and a backstage bar.

Past Artists: Jake Bugg, Dizzee Rascal, Blondie Set in the stately gardens of Wollaton Park, Batman’s house no less from Christopher Nolan’s movies, Splendour is a one-day festival with a difference. There’s a strong focus on filling the bill with a combination of proven hitmakers, like Dizzee Rascal and Jess Glynne, alongside local talent, Jake Bugg and Indiana. There’s a family-friendly ethic to the festival, with a comedy and acoustic stage complementing the music as well as a kids’ area and funfair too!

Past Artists: Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, Madness, Snoop Dogg Having started out in a disused quarry, this Derbyshire-based festival has grown massively over the past few years, with last year’s edition rounding out at 40,000 revellers. Britpop icon Noel Gallagher and ska legends Madness headlined the main stage in 2016, with a bulkier lineup leading to night-time entertainment, including after-hours DJ sets from BBC Radio 2’s Craig Charles, silent discos and a range of specialist bars added to the bill.

won, not one, but four awards; Best Female Artist, Best Sound & Lighting Production, Best Choreography and the ultimate accolade - Official UK No.1 Tribute Act! Nominations are now open for the awards, with 11 up for grabs including:

Even better than the real thing – welcome to the world of the tribute artist Fancy seeing Adele belt out her greatest hits? Perhaps you’d love to see Led Zepplin or catch Bruno Mars perform his catchy pop tunes? While seeing your favourite artist perform live can be an unforgettable experience, it can also be expensive and for many of us means being sat in a seat far away from the stage! Of course, there is the matter of actually getting tickets - many gigs sell out within minutes of going on sale, for example, tickets for Adele’s 2016 tour at the 13,000 capacity Glasgow SSE Hydro venue, sold out in just two minutes! If catching your favourite band or artist isn’t feasible, don’t panic, here in the UK we have many wonderful tribute artists; outstanding vocalists in their own right, who take on the persona of some of the biggest names in music. Expertly capturing the look, sound and performance of the originals, tribute artists put a great deal of hard work and attention to detail into honing their act. Aiming for perfection, they capture the essence of the originals’ performance. Keen to recognise and reward the nation’s tribute artists, The National Tribute Music Awards UK are set to once again hit Leicester’s stylish Athena venue on 5 July 2017. During the event, selected winners will perform for guests, which will include other tribute acts, celebrities and professionals from within the entertainment industry. Last year’s event was a huge success, seeing tribute acts from rock, pop and everything in between, come together for a glittering gala event. Big winners on the night included; Best Male Artist; A Vision of Elvis and Talon, a tribute to The Eagles who took home; Best Band, Best Marketing & PR and Lifetime Achievement Award. Sweeping the board on the night however, was Totally Tina - a tribute to Tina Turner, who

To find out more about the awards, including how to nominate your favourite act, visit www.nationaltributeawards.co.uk/ awards As well as the prestige that comes with being recognised as a leading tribute act, award winners will also receive a trophy and the option of using the ‘kite mark’ logo supplied by The Entertainment Agents’ Association Ltd - endorsing the performer(s) as an act of quality. Becoming a tribute artist is a serious business, with performers putting a great deal of effort, time and money into honing their act. While having a physical similarity to an artist can help, it isn’t essential, with the best tribute artists able to convince the audience they are seeing the real deal thanks to their convincing performance and attention to detail. Achieving this standard of performance doesn’t come overnight, top tribute artists spend countless hours perfecting their act, scrutinising their chosen artist’s mannerisms, stage presence and vocal patterns. Physically transforming into the chosen artist is another essential element to the act and, as every good tribute artist knows, much can be achieved with a great wig, the right costumes and stage make-up. With audiences expecting to experience something as close as possible to the real thing, spending time on getting the costumes just right is time well spent. From Sinatra’s stylish tux to Madonna’s iconic conical bra, audiences expect nothing less from their tribute act. Something many tribute artists have fun with is naming their act from fantastically funny puns to clever plays on words, such as Oasis tribute Oasish, The Antarctic Monkeys and T-Rextasy, the name must be both catchy and reflect the original. Always popular, in 2017, you can experience live music like never before by booking a tribute act for your next event; whether a party, wedding, business function or corporate event. At Champions Music & Entertainment you will find every kind of music from the reggae stylings of Bob Marley to the cool pop of Ed Sheeran.

40 YEARS SINCE WE LOST THE KING OF ROCK ‘N’ ROLL With a career that ended all too soon, Elvis’ legacy still lives on some 40 years following his death. With his movie star good looks, seemingly effortless vocals and infectious good humour, to many it may have seemed inevitable that Elvis’ star would always rise. However, Elvis’ start in life was less than auspicious. Born in 1935, Elvis’ birth was difficult, (his twin brother Jessie was stillborn), and his early years were one of poverty as his family, parents Vernon and Gladys Presley, tried to make ends meet in Deep South Mississippi. Despite his tough start, Elvis had ambition – one fuelled by his passion for music. A devout Catholic, Elvis was inspired by the sounds of his childhood – Gospel. Developing a deep appreciation for music within the church and making some of his earliest performances there, even at this young age, Elvis felt at home performing. As a teen, now living in Memphis, Elvis could regularly be found on downtown Beale Street, a place renowned for its diverse range of clubs and restaurants. So dynamic and diverse was Beale Street that it was influential in developing many new genres, including the then burgeoning R&B scene. Exposed to so many new influences and sounds, it was only a matter of time before Elvis discovered his sound and in 1953 as an 18-year-old fresh out of High School, made his first recording - a $4 dollar, two-track recording intended as a gift for his mother. It is unlikely that Elvis, or indeed anyone, could have predicted the worldwide phenomena that would be born out of this loving gift, but from this point on, his life would be irrevocably changed forever. During the recording at the famous Sun Studios, producer Sam Phillips heard Elvis’ voice and set up an impromptu meeting between local bass player, Bill Black, and guitarist, Scotty Moore. The team reportedly covered numerous songs and riffed throughout the day, however nothing the group produced was good enough for Sam. It wasn’t until the team took a break and Elvis absent-mindedly played a sped-up version of That’s All Right that the record label realised they had a star in the making. This sparked Sun Records to sign him immediately, it was a massive break for Elvis as the label also managed the likes of Johnny Cash and Roy Orbison. Becoming aware of Elvis’ talent, artist manager, Colonel Tom Parker was made his personal manager. In just two years Elvis and Colonel Tom Parker achieved a top 40 single together with Heartbreak Hotel. Becoming an international sensation

and selling over one billion records worldwide, Elvis became the best-selling individual artist of all time. All his albums achieved either gold, platinum, or multi-platinum status. He was also immensely popular with critics - achieving 14 Grammy nominations in his lifetime, of which he won three leading him to receive the Grammy Lifetime Achievement award at just 33. In 1987, the American Music Awards posthumously granted Elvis the Award of Merit. As well as this, Elvis performed in 31 feature length movies and two touring documentaries all of which were well received. 1964’s Viva Las Vegas earnt $11.33 million at the box office, around $87.71 million today, making it Elvis’ highest grossing film. With his career on the up, it was something of a surprise when in 1958 Elvis was drafted into the U.S. army for his National Service. After spending six months in boot camp, Elvis was deployed in Germany for 18 months; still receiving mountains of fan mail. His time in Germany would prove to be formative for the young Elvis, who was still only in his early 20s. Not only did his mother, to whom he was extremely close, pass away – an event that those close to him claim had a significant impact on him, but he also met his future wife. Elvis first met Priscilla Beaulieu – the daughter of a U.S. Air Force Officer - at a party in his home, eight years later the pair would be married. While in many ways Elvis’ life was the stuff of dreams, behind the scenes he was descending in to what would become a nightmare. By the mid-70s Elvis was reportedly addicted to many prescription drugs, something that inevitably took its toll on his marriage. In 1973, Elvis and Priscilla were divorced, however, the pair remained firm friends, even holding hands at the divorce proceedings. The next few years of Elvis’ life saw him doing what he did best – performing. Touring almost constantly, Elvis sold out venues wherever he went and added a third Grammy to his collection. Sadly however, Elvis’ life was to be cut short all too soon when, on 16 August 1977, aged just 42, Elvis passed away from reported heart failure. Despite the intervening 40 years since his untimely death, Elvis’ estate still earns millions each year from music sales, licencing and royalties. His Graceland Mansion in Memphis has been turned into one of the most popular tourist attractions in the U.S. giving fans young and old a place to celebrate the legacy of The King of Rock ‘n’ Roll.

8 HIP-SWIVELLING ELVIS FACTS: 1. Elvis purchased Graceland Mansion in 1957 for $102,500, which is around $875,500 today, he lived in that house until his death in 1977. Since the 14-acre property has been turned into an entertainment complex, it is said to be worth around $55 million today. 2. Elvis never toured outside North America. It is rumoured that his manager, Colonel Tom Parker, was an illegal immigrant. He allegedly turned down many lucrative international deals for fear that he would be denied entry to the U.S. upon his return. 3. Milton Berle, host of Texaco Star Theatre, advised Elvis to perform without his guitar, reportedly saying, “Let ‘em see you son.” Elvis’ movements on-stage caused outrage in the States, causing the tabloids to dub him Elvis the Pelvis. 4. Elvis’ 1960 hit, It’s Now or Never, inspired a prisoner to pursue a career in music upon his release. The prisoner was Barry White, serving a four-month sentence for stealing tyres. 5. It is estimated that there were about 170 Elvis tribute acts in 1977, today it is around 250,000 making him one of the most impersonated artists in the world. 6. Elvis is the only artist to be inducted into five Halls of Fame: Rock n’ Roll, Country, Gospel, Rockabilly, and R&B. 7. Elvis had a pet chimp called Scatter, which developed a taste for Scotch and bourbon. 8. His last words were, “OK, I won’t,” when he assured Ginger Alden, his girlfriend, that he wouldn’t fall asleep reading in the bathroom.

IT’S A MAN’S WORLD

Bring me sunshine...

Eric and Little Ern as Morecambe and Wise When it comes to comedy partnerships few can rival the impeccable timing, good natured teasing and hilarious material of Morecambe & Wise. Eric was born John Eric Bartholomew in 1926 and Ernie, Ernest Wiseman in 1925, these masters of observational comedy entertained generations through their TV & radio shows, live productions and movies. Such is their enduring appeal, that even today, for families across Britain, Christmas Day isn’t complete without the Morecambe & Wise Christmas Special – of which they made 10 consecutive shows! However, the legends of light entertainment might never have formed had the pair, then working as solo artists, not been booked to appear as separate acts at the Nottingham Empire Theatre in 1941. Not making their partnership official until 1946 (a stint of Army service prevented it), the duo set about crafting their act in front of a live stage audience. As their popularity grew, they made their TV debut in 1954 in Running Wild although it was their later shows, Two Of A Kind (1961-68), and The Morecambe & Wise Show (1968- 1983), that truly cemented their place in the nation’s hearts. In fact, they were voted the favourite entertainers of all time in a 1996 poll to mark 60 years of BBC TV. The pair made the switch to TV look remarkably easy, bringing those audience interactions they thrived on during live performances to their recorded shows (think Eric’s sideways glances into the camera). Such was the popularity of their TV shows they drew many big names including The Beatles, Dame Shirley Bassey and actress Glenda Jackson. Awarded OBEs in 1976, the partnership lasted over forty years until Eric’s death in 1984. Ernie passed away some years

later in 1999. Leaving behind a legacy that aspiring comedy acts can only dream of, the pair remain popular today with viewers missing the warmth, humour and sheer silliness they brought to light entertainment. While the originals can never be brought back, expertly capturing their look, mannerisms and humour is tribute act Eric and Little Ern. Played by Morecambe & Wise fans and professional performers, Ian Ashpitel (Ernie) and Jonty Stephen (Eric), the pair bear an uncanny resemblance to the originals and have enjoyed terrific success with their shows. Officially coming together as Eric and Ernie in 2013, though they had performed together as the double act before, the pair took their show to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe where it received rave reviews and sold-out. A tour then followed which was nominated for an Olivier Award in 2014 The pair pay close attention to the subtleties of their comedy heroes, so much so that Eric Morecambe’s family are massively supportive of the act. Defining them as the definitive Morecambe & Wise act, the pair are consummate performers that never break character.

IT’S A MAN’S WORLD

FIVE YEARS...

since the 2012 London Summer Olympics It seems hard to believe that five years have passed since the London 2012 Olympics, when our capital was treated to a fortnight of pulsating sport that continues to inspire a generation. Super Saturday saw Team GB win six golds, Usain Bolt’s Olympic record confirming his status as the greatest sprinter of all time and the Mobot, which are just some of the memorable moments from the games. Crowds were treated to the greatest medal haul by Great Britain since 1908 with a total of 65, an amazing feat only superseded in Rio 2016 with 67 medals but there is no doubt that the legacy of London games lives on. With the entire city undergoing a face-lift to make sure it was ready for the Olympics; The London Stadium was built becoming the biggest multi-purpose sporting stadium in the country. The scene for many of the games’ biggest moments, as well as the spellbinding opening and closing ceremonies, the stadium will once again be opening its doors, and play host to the 2017 Anniversary Games, World Athletics Championships and World Para Athletics Championships. The Anniversary Games is an annual event which plays an important part in athletes’ sporting calendar with some of 48 |

the biggest names in athletics coming together to compete in front of over 60,000 people. Not only does it provide a platform for fans to witness the stars in action and remember the nostalgia of the Olympics, but it also forms a vital part of the 2017 IAAF Diamond League calendar. Britain’s most decorated athlete, Sir Mo Farah was catapulted to worldwide fame after his two gold medal victories in the 2012 Olympics. He has now confirmed his participation at this year’s event in what really will be a must-see for fans. Mo has also announced that this year’s Anniversary Games, which take place on 9 July, will be his final appearance at the event before he retires from track and field at the World Athletics Championships in August. Hosting three athletics events this summer, the London Stadium will also welcome the stars of the sport during the 2017 IAAF World Championships and World Para Athletics Championships. More than 3,000 athletes will descend on the capital between the 4-13 August taking part in 22 track and field disciplines. Undoubtedly, the highlight of the World Championships will come in the 100m final on Sunday 6 August where Jamaican sprint sensation Usain Bolt will race competitively for what he says is the final time. With half a million tickets put on sale for

the Championships, it is sure to be an unmissable spectacle. The world’s fastest man is bound to put on a sensational show with his larger than life personality, which has won him so many fans over the years. Usain Bolt’s incredible 100m sprint world record time of 9.58 seconds has been acknowledged with a special anniversary pricing scheme, with kids’ tickets sold at £9.58 to commemorate his achievement. Other prices nod to the various records set by British Olympic legends Colin Jackson, Jonathan Edwards and Sally Gunnell. Kids were further acknowledged with a nationwide competition where children were asked to create a mascot for both the World Championships and Para Athletics Championships. Working alongside CBBC show Blue Peter, legendary Olympic and Paralympic athletes Dame Jessica Ennis-Hill and Richard Whitehead MBE, challenged 6-15 year olds to use their imagination and create a fun, creative and original mascot that will be used throughout the games. Not only will they get to see their creation used at the Championships they will receive a VIP tour of the Olympic Park and tickets for them and their family and, of course, a coveted Blue Peter badge!

With the World Para Athletics Championships taking place the following week, it gives fans a chance to see the best disabled athletes in the flesh including Jonnie Peacock, Richard Whitehead and Kadeena Cox. It will also mark the first time ever that both competitions have taken place in the same city. Since the Olympics five years ago, the state-of-the-art stadium has undergone some exciting renovations. Improvements include a new roof, improved spectator facilities including bigger food and drink outlets and a flexible seating system which allows fans to get closer to their favourite athletes. The biggest sporting competition of the year, the World Championships marks the showpiece event in the athletics calendar, and with the biggest names in the sport competing it is sure to be an occasion to be remembered for all involved.

suit, all tuxedos are not created equal. At The Bespoke Tailor, a world class tailoring service, award-winning tailor, Adrian Barrows, carefully crafts tailored suits, including tuxedos, which flatter and enhance the wearer.

Style never goes out of fashion and with a tailored tuxedo hanging in the wardrobe, every man is covered, whether it is a corporate event or special occasion such as on a cruise ship, that demands his presence.

With formal wear only being used on a handful of occasions it can be tempting to buy a budget version, however, investing in a tuxedo which has been expertly tailored and produced using quality fabrics will stand the test of time, last years and always look stylish.

As a man attending a black-tie event it can be hard to differentiate oneself from the pack, after all much of the intention behind a black-tie dress code is to give the women in their eveningwear every opportunity to shine. However, while at first glance a tuxedo may seem like just another black

While for many men the tuxedo is synonymous with Hollywood, in particular that most famous of tux wearers, James Bond, Adrian’s approach is to handcraft a perfectly tailored garment that doesn’t try to emulate those that have gone before, but makes the wearer look their very best.

IT’S A MAN’S WORLD

A car is more often than not a reflection of a person’s lifestyle. While practicality plays its part in the form of low miles to the gallon and reliability, for those with a genuine passion for cars, their vehicle represents so much more than that. Helping vehicle owners improve their ownership experience is Reep Midlands, a Leicestershire based premium luxury car care studio. This bespoke 7,500 sq ft facility is the largest of its kind in the UK and was recently launched with the mission statement of specialising in exterior finish on a vehicle through enhancement of the paintwork, correction of the paintwork and professional application of a specialist clear protective film on a vehicle. Vehicles spotted in the studio at Reep Midlands included a host of supercars (Italian seemed to be the flavour of the day), executive saloons, SUV’s, a rare classic ‘67 Mustang and even a motorhome. Despite being a new venture, the company have invested heavily, with this indoor studio having bespoke workshop bays and interior designed reception and meeting rooms. There is already a demand and waiting list for their services despite its infancy and minimal pro-active marketing. The capacity of

5-6 vehicles being actively worked on at any one time was still backed up with cars being held in their high security studio. Clientele at Reep Midlands are an eclectic mix of high net worth individuals with car collections, Private/VIP dealers, Concierge/Executive Hire Companies, Sports stars and the odd celebrity. Owners and local Entrepreneurs Pete George and Pri Chauhan said “use of our facility is beyond just ownership of a luxury vehicle. it is more about how much you cherish, love and value your car or collection. We will happily discuss what you are looking to achieve with your vehicle and create a bespoke package to suit your specific requirements.” This holistic approach to luxury car care is new to the UK market. As a Reep Midlands customer you are invited into the studio and made to feel very welcome by a friendly and professional team. A detailed examination of the vehicle leads to various options using a range of premium manufactured brands including Swissvax - a handmade wax from Switzerland, GTechniq Ceramic Coatings manufactured in the UK, Paint Protection Films by LLumar (a division of the $9 Billion Eastman Kodak Group) and German manufactured Koch Chemie cleaning

Reep Midlands understand the importance of quality which is reflected across the brand and the entire customer experience. We witnessed a handover to a client which involved an elaborate AV display on a designated handover area, a classical music welcome to greet a customer who was clearly chuffed to be given such attention and a lovely bottle of wine given to the passenger of the vehicle as part of the thank you aftercare package. The attention to detail in addition to the finish on the vehicle was stunning and refreshing. Pete and Pri who also own market leading automotive recruitment company PG Automotive, clearly lead by example set by this successful consultancy which is based on site in separate offices. With a 2nd phase launch now in place offering a concierge service for both the customer and the vehicle, on site vehicle tracking and installation, total vehicle vinyl wrapping and even organisation of track day events through partners at “Redline 247” and “Supercar Driver”. There is no doubt that Pete and Pri are here to stay and will continue to dominate the luxury vehicle market in the years to come.

A leading Midlands based wine company, Champagne Occasions possess exclusive rights to sell Borel-Lucas Champagne in the UK. A business relationship founded on a holiday to the Champagne region of France, Chris Wills and his family fell in love with boutique producer Borel-Lucas, who they visited during a vineyard tour. Immediately tasting the difference between boutique Champagne and the general offering on UK supermarket shelves, an idea sparked into Chris’ head. Returning to England with a car boot full of Borel-Lucas’ finest Champagne, Chris and Champagne Occasions were now the sole supplier, and therefore exclusive sellers of Borel-Lucas in the UK. The choice to become the only importers of Borel-Lucas in the UK was simple for Chris, his wife and father. A fourth generation family business themselves, Borel-Lucas have passed their passion, precision and expertise from father to son, a process that has enabled the house to become highly regarded within its industry. Stocking seven products in their range spanning from the Cuvée Reserve to a Grand Cru offering, namely their Cuvée

Soleil d’Or, featuring 100% Chardonnay grapes from the vineyards of Cramant Grand Cru. The Borel-Lucas Champagne house has also recently become the official suppliers to Prince Albert II who buys approximately 3000 bottles of the Brut Reserve and Brut Rose for the Carabiniers of Monaco’s sovereign force who protect Monaco’s Sovereign and the Prince’s Palace. Borel-Lucas were honoured to make a limited edition bottle, with only 7000 bottles made the Brut Reserve was designed specifically for the force and aptly named Carabiniers du Prince de Monaco. Champagne Occasions have enjoyed buoyant growth ever since their establishment and the decision to begin solely importing Borel-Lucas to the UK in 2012 has never been regretted. 2016 has seen the firm gain further momentum, becoming ever more involved in the corporate event market as well as branching out into private tastings. Staunch believers in finding the right Champagne to suit each client, get in contact with Champagne Occasions today and discover the delicious subtle flavours that the Borel-Lucas Champagne house has to offer. The impact effective lighting can have in a home should never be underestimated. No matter the size, age or type of property, the right lighting can add atmosphere, functionality and ambience. However, with legal electrical limitations, creating aesthetically pleasing lighting is impossible without bringing in a professional. This is where West Bank Electric will be your saving grace. Whether you have a vision for your interior space or need help finding effective lighting solutions, West Bank Electric can help. Founder, Chris Ollerenshaw is fully accredited and registered with NAPIT and Part P and has been working as an electrician for over seven years. In 2016 he made the leap to branch out alone. Chris has worked on a number a number of great projects. Providing a wide range of electrical services to many different projects, Chris also provides electrical solutions for industrial locations, retail outlets, healthcare, commercial establishments and public institutions. Whatever the project, Chris’ professional approach ensures safe and effective installation. Although budgets vary, Chris treats all of his clients with the same respect. No matter the money they have in the pot and no matter the restrictions on time, he always strives to deliver projects within budget, on time, and to the highest standard. With many successful projects under his belt, Chris has highlighted one of his most recent projects – electrical works for an exciting new gym.

Zestfit, Perkins Yard, Derby Zestfit is a newly launched business located in a former dance studio in Perkins Yard, Derby. With big ideas for the business and ambitions to grow, gym founder, Kat Williams, had a vision for a business that offered clients something different from the usual gym. While the space needed to have the ‘wow’ factor, it also needed to be practical for users of the gym. With a vision for a space that is inspirational, the client had identified ‘industrial chic’ as the key element. Working with the client, West Bank Electric devised a number of ideas and plans on how the desired look could be achieved. In designing the look, West Bank’s Chris used his years of experience to build on ideas he had seen in action before, including using black PVC conduit against white walls or chipboard cladding for a deconstructed look. Adding to the overall effect, Chris used surface mounted metal clad boxes to add to the industrial feel. Not only did these solutions suit the look the client wanted but they also provided good protection for the cables and fixtures; especially important in such an active environment, where things are likely to be bumped. With users of the gym requiring a space that is well-lit, it was necessary to install a lot of additional lighting. With an eye on costs, West Bank Electric recommended the use of LED lighting and strip lighting which along with offering the required levels of light, are cost-effective and energy efficient. Some of the gym’s classes require a special lighting solution which required the installation of a switching system for disco lighting – giving the space a nightclub feel when required! While practicality was a top priority, in areas such as corridors, the toilets and reception, Chris was able to install more decorative lighting solutions, in this case, ‘nautical’ bulkhead lights. To complete the project, electric heaters and updated heating timers were installed, with various switches and sockets relocated or updated to be metal clad to continue the industrial chic image. The completed design has received positive comments from visitors to the gym, much to the client’s delight, who has been extremely positive about the results.

PRICE ON APPLICATION

‘Aside from exponentially increasing your sex appeal, AutoXotica has many advantages’, explains MD and former British Olympian swimmer Kevin Burns. ‘In addition to the thoroughbred stable of supercars, very best rates and a “can-do” attitude, members can take in live motor sports from the private, high-tech mezzanine lounge within our state-of-the-art HQ at Donington Park, or simply unwind and network with a great bunch of like-minded individuals. It’s an unbelievably apt location for a supercar club, right at the historic heart of British Motorsport with air, road and rail links, as well as racing events, off-roading, museums, skidpan – the works’, comments Burns. With AutoXotica’s tailored supercar club memberships and rentals, the dream of driving a variety of exhilarating cars is now a reality. Plus, the novelty never loses its spice. Nor does the reality bite, like it does for so many supercar owners, as research reveals that on average supercar owners get bored stiff with their motors after only 3 years of ownership.

Introducing AutoXotica, the UK’s only supercar club that makes you feel like James Bond, even if you look like James May. Offering various tiers of memberships, the arrival of AutoXotica means that supercars are now no longer only for the select few. Although it’s based at an international racetrack, AutoXotica is not your typical fancy-pants variety of supercar club. Okay, so you might need to wear half-decent trousers to a cocktail event or three, but other than that, AutoXotica is refreshingly accessible.

The figures also speak for themselves. Even at today’s crazy rates, a £188k car on lease or hire purchase will require a 30% deposit, which is £56k. That leaves £131k to pay off at 7% API which, over 3 years, will cost you over £27k. And that’s in interest alone. Why buy a supercar just to get disembowelled by the interest – and gutted by the mortifying sight of a newer model flashing past? With AutoXotica you can cherry-pick from a constantly revolving catwalk of exotic beauties, instead of exchanging long-term vows with only one. AutoXotica. . . how to truly appreciate supercars without ever needing to own one. Visit www.axsupercars.co.uk for more info.

FINE DINING GUIDE

THE QUEEN’S HEAD

MAIYANGO RESTAURANT

THE LIGHTHOUSE

Belton, Loughborough

City centre, Leicester

Kibworth, Leicestershire

Aspirational Magazine recently sampled the delightful menu at The Queen’s Head. The cosy pub is situated in the quaint village of Belton.

Located in the centre of Leicester, a short walk away from tourist attractions including the cathedral and King Richard III burial site, the Maiyango Restaurant is regarded as one of the best hotel and restaurants in the Midlands. Using suppliers and producers from the local area, community is at the heart of everything they do and has impeccable service in both its hotel and restaurant areas…

The Lighthouse at Kibworth Beauchamp is really quite unique; billed as a Seafood Restaurant but it offers so much more! Sarah and Lino Poli work tirelessly to create a thoroughly modern menu, beginning with an exciting selection of tapas-style nibbles, which you are encouraged to enjoy in the truly Tapas way, sharing and enjoying the fabulous variety of flavours, ideally with a glass of something delicious from their Around The World wine list.

The mix of contemporary and rustic décor was instantly appealing. The Queen’s Head has a homely feel which is carried throughout the restaurant. After being shown to the table we scanned the wine list which was brimming with variety and opted for a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc – the waiter was very well versed in the menu and helped us select a suitable wine for our palates. The main menu matches the season with a tempting selection of comfort foods. For starter we selected both sharing boards. Firstly we chose the sumptuous Spanish tapas with mini chorizo, serrano ham, manchego cheese and quince and secondly the aromatic baked camembert topped with local honey and fresh rosemary. Both boards were served with freshly baked bread. After the perfect amount of wait time between courses we tucked into dishes including fillet steak, whole grilled plaice on the bone – both of which came with rustic cut chips – chicken Kiev paired with creamy mash, vegetarian fettucine with gorgonzola and chilli and sausage and mash with a red wine and shallot sauce. For the sweet lovers there is also a number of desserts to satisfy cravings including lemon sorbet and homemade waffle. It was clear that the head chef had sourced the freshest selection of meat, fish and vegetables and overall he has succeeded in compiling a menu of exquisite food for all tastes and preferences. The pub also houses a private dining area ideal for weddings, conferences and other special occasions. There are also four very homely bedrooms available.

With incredible food, you can be sure your visit will leave you with a thoroughly memorable experience. On 22 July Maiyango restaurant will serve diners for one last time as owner Aatin Anadkat and his team prepare to launch their new concept. Below are just a few of the events they have coming up this summer. Cocktail masterclass & indulgent desserts 28 May and 1 July, £30 per person Everyone loves a cocktail and the expert mixologists at Maiyango Restaurant can teach you how to make the perfect one yourself. With their special Cocktail masterclass alongside tempting desserts every member of your group will be able to prepare, make and taste their own creation. Four course tasting menu paired with favourite gins 7 July, £50 per person A selection of Maiyango’s most delightful desserts will be combined with the very best cocktail platters around to create a magnificent evening of food and drink. Six Course wine tasting dinner 12 and 19 July, £55 per person If wine is more your thing then Maiyango has a list of the finest wines from all over the world. The eatery is also combining their delicious six course tasting menu with a wine dinner to give guests the ultimate dining experience. Four course tasting menu paired with iconic cocktails - 13 July, £50 per person The delicious four-course tasting menu will also be matched with a cocktail tasting experience which is sure to delight diners taste buds. With a wide range of popular drinks to choose from, there are both old favourites and new twists on the Maiyango menu. The Best of Maiyango six course tasting evening 14,15,21 and 22 July, £40 per person Renowned for their unique food and drink menus served in a stylish and sophisticated environment, guests will be able to sample the very best Maiyango has to offer with their six course tasting evenings.

Turn the page and there is an array of seafood on offer embracing the retro to the modern, the classic European to exotic Eastern flavours; the emphasis on all of these being the freshest ingredients beautifully prepared, alongside a smaller selection of meat and vegetarian dishes. It is possible to pop in and enjoy an affordable mid week treat, either with the supper menu, offering two courses for £14.75, or simply have Nibbles and Tipples, a selection of the scrummy nibbles with a glass of your favourite Tipple. All this starts bright and early at 6pm and is entirely perfect for a cheeky supper on the way home from work. On the first Thursday of every month, in addition to everything else, The Lighthouse offers a little taste of Spain, paella and tapas all washed down with jugs of fabulous Sangria. Sarah and Lino, despite their Italian origins love to embrace all good foodie things, and also celebrate Beaujolais Nouveau in November with a thoroughly retro French menu. For that special occasion, or just because you fancy pushing the boat out, The Captain’s Table is offered throughout the week, serving a “long thin tasting menu”, usually of five courses selected to show the very best of the day, you set the guidelines with likes and dislikes and the chef does the rest. It really is the best way to eat! A light, fresh and contemporary maritime themed interior provides the ideal background to relax and enjoy your meal whilst the passionate staff share their pride and infectious enthusiasm for the culinary delights they serve. It is little wonder that The Lighthouse received the coveted accolade of Bib Gourmand in the Michelin Guide, and features alongside its sister restaurant, Boboli, in The Good Food Guide. The Lighthouse has proven its credentials as a pre-eminent culinary destination in Leicestershire, delivering consistently good food at affordable prices. The Lighthouse is a finalist in the Midlands Seafood Restaurant of the Year Awards and has also been nominated for the Niche 2016 Business Awards for Best Restaurant. Indulge yourself in The Lighthouse experience.

FINE DINING GUIDE

The Maiyango Restaurant an end of an era. The start of something new Rewind 12 years and Leicester City was without the Highcross shopping centre, King Richard III’s remains were undiscovered, the Foxes were only playing in the Championship league and the restaurant scene was more than lacking. Out of nowhere Maiyango Restaurant opened its doors in 2005 and immediately made its mark.

With the restaurant always bustling with a great atmosphere, the question of why Aatin has reached this decision, and why 2017 is the time to do it, was raised. To which he openly responded, “There are lots of changes happening in Leicester at the moment, and we feel like the time is right to launch our new concept and change the game once again.

The years since have seen the quirky restaurant, which was the vision and passion of Founder Aatin Anadkat, flourish into the city’s main dining hotspot. Under Aatin, and his expert team’s execution, Maiyango has continued to grow in prestige and has racked up the accolades including a national Gold Award for Excellence from Visit England and has enjoyed a phenomenal following…

“One thing you must remember is we have a brilliant team here and a very successful restaurant, however we have all been doing this a long time and for us it is always good to keep ourselves challenged and on our toes.”

Maiyango is widely recognised as a place where diners can escape from the hubbub of the city, as well as a romantic setting for diners to enjoy great food and good conversation. Its walls have witnessed many a first date where love has blossomed, wedding receptions and countless celebrations as well as some milestone moments through the years including cooking for the Queen on her visit to the city in 2012. However, with these memories to boot and an aura that will remain for years to come 2017 is marking the end of an era for the Maiyango Restaurant. On 22nd July 2017, Aatin will be closing the doors of the restaurant in preparation for something fresh and exciting in its place. While it will be business as usual for the Hotel and Tasting Room, the eatery is set to head in a new direction. “It’s not a sad occasion, it is really exciting and part of our journey” said Aatin when Aspirational Magazine spoke to him about the new transition for the restaurant. “Maiyango has been a game changer since the beginning, we have pushed the boundaries and changed the dining scene of Leicester significantly. That I am extremely proud of”.

94 |

ASPIRATIONAL.UK.COM

It is this blatant passion and dedication to what he does, that reassures us of his decision, but despite being excited about the change, Aatin said that there are parts of Maiyango that he will miss. “I honestly believe, through the events we have held, the special ambiance we have created and the moments that have taken place in the restaurant, we have touched so many people’s lives. It has been so nice to have created that for our guests. That and the booths will probably be up there with the things I will miss most about it.” Wanting to end the Maiyango journey on a high-note, Aatin and the team have put together a menu that showcases some of their flagship dishes which have become staple favourites with diners over the years. Diners, who are encouraged to visit the restaurant for one last hurrah, can enjoy the ‘Best of Maiyango’ menu. Starters include seared king scallops, poached spice watermelon and the ‘picnic terrine’. Main courses range from steamed wild sea bass, Moroccan spiced rump of lamb and five-spice Gressingham duck. With a great reputation for their desserts, diners with a sweet tooth won’t be disappointed either with delights such as pineapple ravioli, five-spice panna cotta and mango and cardamom cheesecake.

Two courses from the ‘Best of Maiyango’ menu are priced at £28.00 and three courses for £29.50. Aatin ended the conversation with a smile on his face, clearly wanting to keep his new plans well under lock and key, but left us with the words “watch this space, we are going to have a lot of fun”.

One thing we are confident of, is that no matter what is on the horizon for Aatin and his team, with a legacy like Maiyango to their name, what they do next is sure to have a huge impact on Leicester.

As we prepare to close Maiyango Restaurant on the 22nd July 2017, we would be delighted for you to join us for our special final events below.

BUSINESS AND FINANCE

A New Approach to Brand Services More often than not, this causes confusing, disjointed and inefficient delivery, which dramatically reduces the return on investment for the client and can have a detrimental effect on the brand.

Champions (UK) plc is a multiple award-winning family-run brand agency based in the East Midlands and London that delivers results and establishes long-term relationships with its clients. With a passion for brands, they understand that people drive business. Just as people make emotional investments in their brands, Champions make emotional investments in their clients. They become part of your team and build your future together.

Reshaping the Landscape Back in 2003 and seeking to overturn industry norms, Founder and Managing Director Matthew Hayes defied the tendency towards niche service provision by creating an agency with full spectrum capabilities. He wanted to make life easier for brands. He told us, “Tradition has it that an agency is supposed to occupy a niche. An agency is meant to specialise in one area, and one area alone. While this is self-limiting for the agency, more importantly it makes things tough for the client. Every brand is different and has its own unique branding requirements and challenges. The last thing a business needs is the added complexity of juggling several agencies in the hope of reaching its target audience. With the traditional agency model, clients are often faced with clashes of creative interpretation of the campaign brief. 104 |

ASPIRATIONAL.UK.COM

Another major flaw in the traditional model is the lack of integrity in agencies’ pitches. The niche agency’s objective is to sell as much of the service it offers as possible, not to provide the client with what they need. For example, an advertising agency always wants to sell advertising, even though in many cases the budget or end goal may not be best served using this medium. As a full service agency, we can ensure we allocate a client’s budget effectively to maximise results and their returns.“

Choosing A Different Tack Breaking the mould, Champions came up with a unique model. They created an agency with expertise across the board, one capable of delivering everything brands need from one place. Champions (UK) plc was established to make an impact in an initial five service areas.

CREATIVE : MARKETING : PR : EVENTS : CELEBRITY Without doubt, Matthew’s vision has paid off. Despite an unpredictable economic climate, they have grown into a £20 million turnover concern with more than 80 full-time staff. Despite exponential growth, they’ve kept the family atmosphere and both the company and Matthew himself have been singled out for a number of high profile awards at national level. Their focus on driving results through strong client partnerships has seen them deliver success to well over 500 high profile brands, many of which remain with them today.

While Smith Partnership is future-facing, 2017 marks an opportunity for the firm to reflect on their journey so far as they celebrate the 30-year anniversary of firm. BUILT ON SOLID VALUES Formed with a simple ethos at its heart in October 1987, from the beginning Smith Partnership knew they wanted to do things a little differently from their competitors. Of course, exceptional legal expertise and know-how was always going to be a cornerstone of this Legal 500 ‘Top Tier’ firm’s offering, but from the outset, the founding partners wanted to marry this with a commitment to outstanding client care and communication. Clearly, this is something that the firm has achieved, reflected by the Law Society’s LEXCEL mark; evidence of their commitment to excellent customer care. With the client at the heart of everything they do, every member of Smith Partnership’s team understands how overwhelming and stressful legal matters can be, especially when it comes to understanding those complex legal terms. This is why the firm commits to communicating with clients in a way that works for them, whether that is face-to-face, over the phone or via email and, depending on the case, solicitors can even visit clients at home or a location of their choice. ON HAND TO HELP Since it first opened its doors, Smith Partnership has advised over 250,000 clients and grown to include 28 partners and over 200 staff spread over eight offices across the Midlands. Including the original centres at Burton upon Trent, Derby and Swadlincote, the firm also has branches in Stokeon-Trent and Leicester. When we think of the world of investment banking and wealth management, traditionally we would have conjured up the image of a city gent operating in what was very much a man’s world. While it is true to say that finance has historically been dominated by men, challenging this view and succeeding, is wealth management expert, Janine Edwards. Now a Principal Practice of St. James’s Wealth Management, Janine’s career in the world of finance began when she was just 21 years old and was made one of Lloyds TSB’s youngest ever managers, running her own branch in Market Deeping, Peterborough. Fast-forward 30 years and Janine is at the top of her game and celebrating three decades in the financial services sector. Building upon the solid foundation her time within the High-Street banking sector gave her, Janine’s career has evolved and she has spent the last 17 years with St. James’s Wealth Management, a leading wealth management firm that works with clients from a wide range of sectors including SME’s and global firms.

As Janine points out, the wealth management sector is one in which she was destined to thrive: “I had a good grounding in banking, but I always preferred seeing clients face to face and joined St. James’s Place because I saw it as an opportunity to give clients much better advice, offer a distinctive investment management approach and a more holistic wealth management service.” She continued: “When St. James’s Place approached me, I knew their reputation was formidable and that they were something special and different.” Now a Principal Practice within the firm, one of the few females to reach this status, Janine has built up an enviable reputation for offering the highest standards of service. Building relationships with her clients that are based on trust and proven expertise, Janine’s business has been built mostly on word of mouth, with existing clients recommending her services; a ringing endorsement for any business. Backed by her growing team (two new advisors are set to join soon covering Birmingham and Warwickshire), Janine has built a business that offers client focussed advice and specialist knowledge around

all areas of wealth management, including matters such as regulatory compliance, investment planning and financial planning for the future. Working with private clients and business owners, to accommodate her ever-expanding business, 2017 sees Janine relocate offices, moving from her Balsall Common base which has been home to the business for 17 years, to a new space in Berkswell, West Midlands. Along with a desire for more space, the move was also driven by Janine’s unwavering commitment to offering outstanding client care as she explains: “Our back-office team is essential to the seamless service we offer clients and over the years the team has grown and we wanted them to have the opportunity to build a more efficient working space, including installing completely new IT systems to help with the speed of paperwork.”

Best Financial Adviser 2016/17

While driven by current needs, the move also gives Janine and team the opportunity to grow in the future. Around eight times larger than the former offices, along with a welcoming and aesthetically pleasing reception space, it offers three meeting rooms as well as an informal gathering space. Also available is a seminar room where the team host client/ contact seminars which is also offered to clients and contacts for their own use. Situated amid beautiful countryside, the office move marks a new chapter for the business, something Janine is looking forward to: “This new space opens up many new opportunities for growth and I am looking forward to sharing the space with clients new and existing as we welcome them at our new location.” To find out more about the range of services available from Janine Edwards, Principal Partner of St. James’s Wealth Management, call 01676 530 606 or email Janine.edwards@sjpp.co.uk.

How Checkatrade are helping thousands of people through their charity work

When a freak tornado tore its way through the small town of Selsey, Sussex in January 1998, no one could have guessed that this would lay the foundations for Checkatrade, the largest online resource of trusted tradespeople in the country. The immediate aftermath saw a huge trail of destruction throughout the town, with £10m worth of damage caused. From this, entrepreneur and local businessman Kevin Byrne was inspired to start a brand-new resource of trusted tradespeople, as the devastation had attracted scores of rogue traders to the town.

Charity Abseiling, Sunday 11th September 2016

Fast forward to the present day, and Checkatrade have continued to grow, with the company now generating a whopping £1.5bn every year for UK trades. Checkatrade are not only a household name across the UK when it comes to home improvement, the company is also dedicated to helping others through its charity work.

Craig is adamant the company are more than just a trusted tradespeople resource, saying: “I have worked with Checkatrade for a while now and I am continually impressed, not just by the great service they offer customers. It’s more than helping consumers find a trustworthy tradesperson, I’m impressed by their commitment to raising money and supporting good causes.”

The company’s values are based upon helping others so it’s fitting that Checkatrade have a large focus on charity work. One of Kevin’s biggest achievements to date is the 12 marathons in 12 months he ran, fundraising for a building project for a local school. Checkatrade themselves donated a site manager and materials and convinced many of their members to give up their time to complete the build. Checkatrade’s charitable contributions were commended winning the ‘Greatest Contribution to Sussex Charity’ award at the Sussex Business Awards. Checkatrade regularly contribute to a whole host of other charity and fundraising events. Here is just a selection of what they’ve been up to over the last 12 months.

ASPIRATIONAL.UK.COM

For their biggest fundraising event of the year, Checkatrade took over The Emirates Spinnaker Tower, in Portsmouth for a charity abseil. The colossal structure dwarfs the London Eye and the Blackpool Tower standing at over 560ft. 40 plucky participants took on the daring challenge, among them Big Brother winner and Checkatrade ambassador Craig Phillips.

Almost £8,000 was raised for the Lighthouse Foundation, who work to support victims of the 2015 Nepal earthquake, that left thousands either dead or injured, and hundreds of thousands more without a home.

Checkatrade Mad March Mare, 4th March 2017 Taking place at the opposite end of the country, the Checkatrade Mad March Mare, saw competitors take on a 10km obstacle course. Staff from Checkatrade’s offices in Nottingham, Newcastle and West Sussex were present and joined in with the fun! Money raised went towards the Tynedale Hospice at Home, based in West Northumberland and Ponetland and St Oswald’s Hospice, Gosforth, Newcastle-upon-Tyne. The funds will help provide essential care for those with terminal or life-limiting illnesses.

Checkatrade Trophy Final, 2 April 2017 In 2016, the company broke new ground by becoming the title sponsor of the Football League’s EFL Trophy. The Checkatrade Trophy was a roaring success, culminating in a record-breaking attendance of 74,434 fans at Wembley Stadium to see Coventry City prevail 2-1 over Oxford United in April 2017. Not only was the day a fantastic footballing spectacle but it also provided the opportunity to raise awareness for a great cause. When Checkatrade member and landscaper Addam Smith discovered that his close friend and fellow tradesman Keith Ellick had been diagnosed with terminal cancer he formed the charity ‘Band of Builders’ and helped raise almost £60,000 to help Keith put his affairs in order. Sadly, Keith passed away a few days before he was due to carry the ball out at the final and so Addam and his son George did so on his behalf. Band of Builders continue to fundraise and are currently hoping to raise £100,000 for Keith’s family which will help them to buy their house from the council and provide them with more stability. Their charitable efforts will also raise money for tradespeople who have found themselves in similar situations to Keith.

Teams of four were carted off to prison, before having to ‘escape’ the confines by any means they could. From an unknown location teams had to find their way back to the starting point at Fontwell Racecourse, Chichester. A great day was had by all involved, with thousands being raised and plenty of fancy dress fun. Checkatrade realise how important it is to provide a helping hand to those less fortunate and have a range of fundraising events lined up throughout the year. For more information on any of Checkatrade’s charity events visit www.checkatrade.com Checkatrade helps combat the UK’s rogue trader problem by continuously vetting and monitoring local tradespeople such as builders, plumbers and electricians as well as service providers. If you’re thinking of having work done in your home and are looking for a reputable tradesperson, please visit www.checkatrade.com

Charity Jailbreak, 7 May 2017 In May, Checkatrade again teamed up with radio station Spirit FM to raise funds for the Sussex Snowdrop Trust, which provides days out for families whose children suffer from various life-limiting afflictions. Putting on their annual charity jailbreak competition, participants were left with no phone, no money and only had their brains to rely on during this challenging and fun filled event.

FACING UP to adversity 128 |

ASPIRATIONAL.UK.COM

Simon Weston CBE is the face of the Falklands Conflict. Events on June 8 1982 changed his life forever but he refuses to allow that day to define him. Aspirational Magazine had the pleasure of talking with a man who shares his journey’s lessons as a sought after motivational speaker. His message is one of courage, of rediscovery, of hope and opportunity. One of turning negatives into positives. “During my presentations, I talk about the incident, my recovery and my attitude from then until now. I was in the doldrums but I found that, if you look at things as a failure, you’re missing the chance to learn. You never know when the next pearl of wisdom is coming.” In June 1982, just days before her surrender, Argentina’s grip was failing. She still held the Falklands capital Stanley but knew a decisive British assault was coming. Seeking to delay the inevitable, on the morning of the 8th, the Junta’s jets made their move. What followed was the conflict’s deadliest single attack on British servicemen. Moored in Bluff Cove, the military transport ships Sir Tristram and Sir Galahad waited to land troops in support of the ground offensive. Communications difficulties meant they were oblivious to the threat. They were exposed.

“When you’ve been disfigured, it can be like a bereavement. You’ve lost the person you used to be. I had to find myself again. Self-image is a big part of that, so there were big hurdles. Nothing good is ever easy and I found the harder I worked, the easier it became.” “Unfortunately, we live in a very superficial world. Women in particular are under enormous pressure. Nowadays, I just think ‘if you don’t like my face, the door’s over there’. I find that if you feel comfortable and project positivity, others respond well.” This outlook endeared Simon to the British public during a 1983 BBC documentary, ‘Simon’s War’, the first of five subsequent films tracing his recovery. He has since used his profile to highlight not only disfigurement and veterans causes but a series of other important issues, including post-traumatic stress disorder, loneliness and intolerance. Simon sat as President for Wales Scouting for two years and is Patron of the Falklands Veterans Foundation, The Enham Trust, Allied Service Trust and an Ambassador for Changing Faces. After 35 years, he remains an inspirational figure. His bravery saw him voted the Nation’s Favourite Hero in 2014, his ongoing charity work earnt him an CBE in 2016.

At 2pm local time, a wave of five Skyhawks unleashed their deadly cargo. A 500lb bomb penetrated Sir Tristram’s deck but failed to explode on impact. Two men were killed but the remaining crew were evacuated before it detonated. On Sir Galahad things took a grimmer turn. Three missiles slammed into her, igniting over 100 tonnes of ammunition and fuel supplies. 48 perished as Navy choppers hovered in thick black smoke to winch survivors to safety. Having sustained serious burns to 46% of his body, Simon was evacuated. Severe injuries spoke of a long road ahead. In his position, many of us might have succumbed to anger, yet Simon has never born a grudge. “I’m now friends with the Argentinian pilot. The only thing that separates me from him is geography and the different cultures we grew up in. We share our love of country and our sense of duty. We share our conscience, our professionalism, our motives for ourselves and for our families.” Simon was eventually repatriated to the UK, where he underwent the first of over 80 operations. Mental wounds soon emerged. His face disfigured to the point that his mother failed to recognise him at Woolwich Hospital, he found himself robbed of his confidence and identity. “With friends and family having to go to work, after I left hospital I was largely left to my own devices. A lot of us suppress our feelings until they can’t be contained any more. It was only when I retreated to my own private space that I crumbled.” “Back then, much went unspoken. Men were supposed to be men. The famous British stiff upper lip rarely so much as quivered but we’ve made great strides since then. You’re allowed to be distraught, you’re allowed to be depressed. Just because you’re a trained soldier, you’re still a human being with emotions.”

His story strikes a chord with everyone. He shares it with businesses and individuals across the UK and beyond. Saga Cruises, regular partners of our publisher, Champions (UK) plc, are the latest to call on Simon, asking him on to a Mediterranean cruise in May of this year and treating their guests to his insights. “It was a fantastic trip”, he said. “I love the opportunity to get my message across to a new audience but I also met some incredible people and drew on their perspectives. As my mother always says, if you don’t learn something new every day, you’ve missed the point.”

Simon Weston CBE is available for speaking engagements and personal appearances through Champions Speakers. To find out more, please call Scarlett Stacey on 08453 31 30 31 or email sstacey@championsukplc.com
