In the last edition of Aspirational I spoke of the changing face of the retail High Street. The last 6 months has brought about more change where we have seen the sad closure of the popular toy shop, Dominoes, in Leicester. I think this, above many, highlights the necessity to continually invest in today’s modern retail world. I believe that today’s consumer still wants the choice to purchase locally – but wants exceptional service, friendly faces, innovative and quality products all at competitive prices. This is where Lumbers has excelled for nearly 150 years as the oldest Diamond Merchants, Goldsmiths and luxury goods purveyor in Leicestershire. The internet has brought its own competitive nature to retailing. However it is interesting to gauge the reactions of the consumer time after time when we are asked to value on-line purchases which are fake, over-priced or inaccurately described. I would think that there is not a single day that the Lumbers’ valuation team don’t have to advise someone that the lovely birthday present, bought with so much thought from the internet, is actually a piece of glass and worthless, or the watch, miraculously discounted online, is actually a fake from China! I think this unpoliced retailing can ensure that luxury goods will continue to thrive in an old fashioned High Street retail location alongside those retailers’ own internet sites. I am pleased to hear that many of you responded to my last Aspirational Column confirming that it is unthinkable that Lumbers would move from our current glamorous location. To this end I am working hard to try and secure making Market Street the Bond Street of Leicester by expanding our offering of luxury goods. We are delighted to add Hublot watches to our portfolio of watch brands. In 1980, Carlo Crocco created the Hublot watch in gold, fitted with the first natural black rubber strap in the history of watch making. It has now become the pioneering inspiration for a celebrated style of watch making on all levels. The fusion of unlikely materials such as gold and ceramic, tantalum and pink gold, and even magnesium and titanium make the brand an iconic and much sought after watch. Indeed members of royal families immediately showed their enthusiasm for Hublot and were soon followed by a large number of celebrities the world over. With Christmas fast approaching we are delighted to be able to show our new jewellery and watch ranges. My team has been busy throughout the year sourcing beautiful gem stones from around the world. We have designed and created exquisite jewellery for you, coupled with the most in depth stock of diamonds in the city and you will be able to choose the perfect Christmas gifts. I am certain there is something for everyone! As 2013 draws to a conclusion I would also like to touch on sadness that many of us seem to have experienced this year. There seems to have been a number of tragedies and family losses that have touched many households in Leicestershire and my heart has gone out to each of my family, friends, work colleagues and acquaintances, that have experienced grief this year. I do hope that we all enjoy Christmas and raise our glasses to absent friends and family on Christmas day. May the festive season and 2014 bring happiness and health to you all.

AngelinA Jolie:

A

PAssionAte life

As one of the world’s most influential celebrities, Angelina Jolie has had to adapt to life in the public eye. Her screen presence is widely celebrated, as is her philanthropy, humanitarian work and generous spirit.

Having emerged from a troubled background, she uses her fame to promote issues that she feels most passionate about. Aspirational Magazine charts her meteoric rise to fame and the work she does to help those in need. Angelina Jolie Voight was born on 4th June 1975 in Los Angeles and is the daughter of actors Jon Voight and Marcheline Bertrand. Her parents separated when she was very young and she continually moved around to a number of different cities, never becoming entirely settled in one place.

Having emerged from a troubled background, she uses her fame to promote issues that she feels passionate about.

12

Her passion for performing came very early in life when she appeared in her first film, ‘Lookin’ to Get Out’, which also starred her father. She entered acting school when she was 16 to develop her considerable talent. As her profile grew, so did her reputation as a ‘wild child’, working without an agent or publicist for the first decade of her career, her independence allowed her to provide a string of extremely honest interviews about her tumultuous life, giving her an engaging and much sought after place in the media spotlight. Despite problems in her private life, she still managed to put in fantastic performances on screen, winning numerous awards for her roles. The pinnacle of this growing recognition came when she won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for the 1999 film ‘Girl, Interrupted’. Drawing on some of her past experiences, she stayed in character throughout the duration of the film. Her performance as a troubled but charismatic teenager who had ended up in a psychiatric unit was spectacular for an actress who was still so young, and testament to her outstanding ability.

Her real breakthrough role came in 2001 when she played the eponymous heroine in ‘Lara Croft: Tomb Raider’. Part of the movie was filmed in Cambodia, allowing Jolie to become aware of the humanitarian crisis in the country. This experience made her look at tragedies worldwide and would later drive her to campaign to provide support to those who needed it most. The film was a massive box office success and Angelina became one of the most sought-after actresses in the world. The media became fascinated with her personal life and she had to adapt to the fact that she would spend much of her time in the public eye. She continued to star in a string of films that gathered public and critical acclaim. In 2005, she appeared in another box office success, ‘Mr and Mrs Smith’ with Brad Pitt. It has always been unclear when the pair began their relationship, as they were careful not to be photographed together in public so as not to spark too many rumours.

The media eventually found out and the relationship was widely reported on. They were dubbed ‘Brangelina’ by the celebrity press and became one of the most talked-about couples on the planet. Their relationship has lasted the test of time despite the obvious pressure that constant exposure in the media has brought. Continuing her high-profile acting career, Angelina appeared in a string of commercially successful films including ‘Wanted’, ‘Changeling’, ‘Salt’ and ‘The Tourist’. Angelina is a versatile actress who is able to adapt to suit a variety of different genres and her screen presence is increasingly sought-after, with some of the greatest actors and directors in the world queuing up to work with her. In 2011, she made her directorial debut with ‘In the Land of Blood and Honey’ which she also wrote.

Celebrated for its unflinching portrayal of the terrible events of the Bosnian War, Angelina showed an entirely different skill that demonstrates her considerable talent. Angelina is well known for adopting children into her family and she adopted her first son, Maddox, in 2001 from Cambodia. She has since taken in two more children from Ethiopia and Vietnam, along with having three children of her own with Brad Pitt. All of her adopted children are from orphanages and her decision to take them in further demonstrates her caring spirit and strong desire to help those in need. When she gave birth to her first biological child, she decided to sell the pictures to People and Hello! magazines for millions of pounds which she donated to African children’s charities. After years in the public eye, she became aware of how to use her celebrity profile to raise money for important causes.

Angelina is celebrated for her philanthropy and humanitarian work, travelling all over the world. As well as donating large amounts of her own money to charity, she has tirelessly campaigned to raise awareness for causes which she feels passionate about. She has visited refugee camps worldwide and was named a UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador. Her main desire is to promote the causes of those who are in urgent need of support and she has established a number of charities herself, including the ‘Maddox Jolie-Pitt Foundation’ which aims to provide environmental conservation and community support to the north of Cambodia. She says about her work: “We cannot close ourselves off to information and ignore the fact that millions of people are out there suffering. All of us would like to believe that if we were in a bad situation someone would help us.” More recently, she has been in the media promoting another cause: the prevention of breast cancer. She took extreme preventative measures herself by having a double mastectomy after finding out the news that she was genetically predisposed to develop breast cancer. Her own awareness of the disease came when her mother suffered from it relatively early in life.

16

She made the news of her double mastectomy public with the hope that more women would get genetically tested in order to find out if they are likely to develop the disease. She believes that many women could be living under the shadow of cancer and need to be aware of the options that are available to them if there is a chance that they may suffer from the disease.

Angelina Jolie has emerged from a difficult background to become one of the most influential and inspirational women in the world. She has starred in some of the biggest films of the last 15 years and has done incredible work promoting the causes that mean something to her. Over the years, she has learnt to use her media image to try to benefit other people. She shows no sign of disappearing from the public eye and the world holds its breath to see what she will do next.

BEAUTY, HEALTH AND LIFESTYLE

Experience something special.. My fondest childhood memories include many trips to our local tearoom with my favourite grandmother. I can still hear the chink of the silver teaspoons stirring sugar lumps into steaming hot tea poured from silver teapots, the hushed voices punctuated by laughter as friends and families exchanged stories over sandwiches and cakes, and the beautiful music playing quietly in the background.

The highlight of this very special treat was always the arrival of the cake trolley creaking with an abundance of freshly baked cakes as it was wheeled over by kindly waitresses clad in black and white uniforms. These precious memories were well and truly stirred on a recent visit to Gillian Wesley and the Catwalk Cafe in Knowle. This quaint business, sited in an old Victorian haberdashery shop, marries a fashion themed cafe with an in-house design studio and boutique. This unique cafe, complete with sweeping red catwalk carpet, is just the place to meet for coffee, catch up over lunch, or treat someone special to a divine afternoon tea. Unfamiliar with Knowle, I investigated the website prior to my visit and was delighted to find six free car parks all within easy walking distance of the Catwalk Cafe. Located just off the high street this unusual business was easy to identify by its corset image painted on the side of the cottage-like building. The shop windows were captivating with corset-clad mannequins sporting skirts of cascading chiffon. Vintage... with a modern twist! I bravely pushed open the shop door as an old fashioned tearoom bell announced my arrival. My hesitation was completely swept aside by a smiling

20

waitress dressed in a traditional black and white uniform. Once inside the full impact of this jaw dropping venue hit me. The sweeping red catwalk carpet is complemented by vintage style black and white floor tiles. With exposed brickwork and vintage furniture completing the look. The cafe stood right infront of me, with an enticing boutique to the right. The warm welcome continued as I was guided to my table and I immediately knew this was going to be an enjoyable experience. I sat alongside what I can only describe as a Victorian style arcade shop. Peering through the glass into what must have been the original haberdashery shop, I could see a collection of wedding dresses that looked as if they had come straight off the set of Downton Abbey! Something else caught my eye in the reflection of the glass... a cake trolley! Loaded with home baked cakes this extravaganza was a sight to behold! My eyes couldn’t help but follow it as it was wheeled from table to table. I noted with interest that it was even possible to have a little slice of everything! Oh boy! I ordered a glass of Champagne and the daily special... Seafood Linguine, and continued to digest all that I saw

around me. A business meeting between two ladies was taking place on the table behind me. An elegant afternoon tea stood proudly in the centre of the table on a three tier cake stand. Mismatched vintage china and a silver teapot completed this very charming picture of British nostalgia. The beautifully presented staff were discreetly attentive. I asked what type of customers frequented the Catwalk Cafe. “Anyone” the waitress said, “from couples, friends, family groups, business associates to groups of girls holding baby showers or upmarket pre wedding celebrations. We even hire the venue out on Sunday afternoons for Christenings and family gatherings”. I should point out that whilst obviously being a popular choice for ladies, the men were well catered for too. At the time of my visit, several men, having no doubt secured considerable brownie points for their choice of lunch venue with their other halves, were now relaxing over a beer and the daily newspaper, while their ladies browsed the quirky boutique and gift shop. It struck me as the ultimate in stress free Christmas shopping! At three o’clock the background music and the black and white movies playing on the TV screen behind the counter were switched off, and a young lady dressed in

forties attire stepped up to the microphone. An hour of 1940’s classics followed, which was met by rapturous applause by those enjoying their afternoon teas. What a very special afternoon this was proving to be!

Afternoon tea gift vouchers available online

More questioning of the staff revealed that while the French trained chef produces all of the dishes and home baked cakes, upstairs in the studio seamstresses are creating unique one off Gillian Wesley designs to sell in the boutique. As I poured my tea from the silver teapot into the vintage china cup, my thoughts returned to my grandmother and our weekly trips to the local tearoom. It struck me that this little gem of a business is the perfect antidote for those who are weary of our copycat high streets and manufactured or mass produced goods. I cannot wait to bring my own grandchildren here. I have a feeling that in fifty years time, people will be fondly reminiscing about happy times at the Catwalk Cafe.

Botox injections for cosmetic purposes are designed to decrease deep furrows and lines on the forehead and around the face. Enhance Hair and Skin Centre has been established since 1994, launched to offer effective and affordable non-invasive treatments

for a variety of skin and hair problems. Having recently launched a new Cryoderm System that incorporates 5 treatments into 1, they also offer no needle mesotherapy. This needle-free version uses ultra-sonic technology to push forward various formulas such as Meso-Btox and meso-hydrafill (a filler) deep into the dermal layers of the skin. Botox contains Argirline, a nontoxic safer and milder form alternative to Botulinum Toxin (used in botox injections) but have similar results in reducing expression lines. There is no paralysis of the facial muscles, but they do become more relaxed and the skin becomes tighter. This treatment is effective as it aids the infusion of the product into the dermal layers of the skin, much deeper than standard galvanic systems.

Donna Hayes It’s great to know that I can look and feel good without having to go through any pain. Really worth the money and the service was great too! IT’S A MAN’S WORLD

Hitting new HeigHts

witH nutrafit

The last edition of Aspirational saw the introduction of professional golfer Jason Palmer, and the effects of his full analysis and training at Nutrafit on his performance.

Jason’s comments on his season progress and his work with nutrafit

Jason was suffering from a range of mechanical errors relating to his golfing movement patterns and posture which included a leg length discrepancy and muscle spasms. Jason was also under-fuelling his sport which resulted in a low metabolic rate.

Six months on, Jason is coming to the end of this season which has shown a huge amount of improvement. His main aim this season was to secure a top five finish on the Alps Tour and compete on the Challenge Tour next season.

All of which would have had a negative impact on his performance, causing a detrimental effect on his concentration levels, fitness and technique.

With one event to go, Jason is presiding at the top of the Order of Merit by nearly 16,000 points; an unassailable lead. During a spectacular season, he has secured three tournament victories at the Friuli Venezia Giulia Open, Cervino Open and Citadelle Trophy International. At the latter tournament, Jason made the record books winning by 11 strokes, the widest margin of victory in Alps Tour history.

Nutrafit worked with Jason to correct many of the problems that were affecting his golfing ability and preventing further progression in performance. After three months Jason was already seeing signs of real improvement in his management of back pain, energy and concentration levels allowing him to perform at his optimum.

“My work at the beginning of the year with Nutrafit has undoubtedly been a big factor in my success this season. I have increased my energy levels through the fitness work carried out, and I am able to sustain my concentration much better during the course of a tournament thanks to this and my improved diet. In the past I have often fallen just the wrong side of the dividing line between success and failure. This year I have been successful in most of my events and my three tournament victories show that I now have the stamina and mental strength to go all the way! I have made small gains in physical strength due to the pre season schedule implemented at Nutrafit. As well as the benefits of being stronger physically, the work at Nutrafit also has a positive psychological impact. Anything which can be used to increase self confidence is critical for a golfer. So much of golf is in the mind, and by being fitter and stronger physically, I am also stronger mentally. I feel that my work with Nutrafit has given me the opportunity to unlock my true potential in the game. Although I have made giant strides this season, the work does not stop there and there are still areas which we need to improve.”

50

Jason’s comments on areas to improve on for next season “I am still not 100% pain free at tournaments. The heavy stress on my body does show itself now and again in the form of aches and pains and also fatigue, although on a much smaller level than before I initially came to see Nutrafit. This winter and off-season, I plan to make significant gains in strength and fitness. I also think once I have made these gains it is important that we implement a fitness

regime which can be used to maintain my improved fitness level throughout the season. I sometimes find it is difficult to carry out my exercises whilst away due to time restraints, lack of facilities and fatigue. Next season I hope to stay on top of things not only when I am taking time off at home, but also during my season. Another potential area for improvement still lies with my diet. I have successfully cut out an excess of sugars from my diet which helps massively to keep my energy levels at a constant rather than fluctuating wildly.

But I still need to eat more on-course. I find it difficult to snack as I just simply don’t feel like eating but I know that on-course it is crucial that I keep refuelling my body. Off-course, I also need to eat better so I will consult with Nutrafit and come up with a plan to combat this problem. I am massively looking forward to continuing my work with Nutrafit and I know it can play a crucial role in my continued development. This year has been a huge step forward but the standard will jump up a notch next season and I have to be ready.”

nutrafit Plan of action - stage 2 With the season drawing to an end, Nutrafit’s Dan Senior is drawing up a plan of action for Jason to further progress his game during off season, starting with a full re-analysis and then using that vital information unique to Jason to develop tailored fitness, nutrition and biomechanic plans. Biomechanics - Jason’s hips are of upmost importance on the list of things to address. Both flexibility and function need improvement. This will increase his hip rotation and power through his swing. Follow up exercises will be easy for Jason to maintain with his tight schedule. Secondly Jason’s thoracic lateral flexion and rotation will be addressed. This will help him with posture and improve his form for strength work. Fitness - Jason will be doing short HIIT (high intensity interval training) sessions to improve his ability to work at a higher heart rate for set periods. The HIIT training will enable Jason to do more volume in his strength sessions.

His main focus in the strength sessions will be his thoracic region. Securing correct form for big lifts like squats and deadlifts will help strengthen which in turn will help reduce his pain and aid his swing. Towards the start of next season Jason will go through conditioning and power phases to increase strength, endurance and speed through certain movement patterns to get him game fit for the season ahead. Nutrition - This is always an ongoing learning curve for all clients. We have merely scratched the surface with this subject. Through the winter Jason will have a more in-depth ability to fuel himself correctly for pre and post events. His overall knowledge of what and why to eat will be vastly improved. We will also be taking Jason through supplementation. What to take, when and why to ensure adequate fuelling throughout next season This action plan will not only help reduce Jason’s pain further, the new strength, fitness and better fuelling will ensure Jason is fully prepared and ready for bigger and better things next season.

Hublot King Power Unico Lumbers is delighted to welcome a new and rising star to our business. Hublot watches have established themselves in a short space of time, relatively speaking, creating a brand that is distinctive and contemporary. Best known for their Big Bang watch, the King Power is a bigger, stronger, more powerful and further evolved design. The timepiece has a complex skeletonised dial made of several layers and housed in a case specially designed for the Unico calibre. The Unico movement is entirely produced by Hublot’s watchmakers, and they have created a practical flyback chronograph which can be reset at any time, and has a 72 power reserve. The titanium satin finish case adds a point of difference to other brands and means that this 48mm case is lighter than expected, and ultimately wearable.

Jack Heuer Carrera 50th Anniversary Tag Heuer Honorary Chairman Jack Heuer is celebrated in a distinctive edition inspired by the two part construction Heuer stop watches that he once used on the pro racing circuits around the world. The innovative asymmetrical case design is based on the Carrera Mikrogirder – slightly rising at an angle at the top where the crown and chronograph pushers are located in a design often referred to as Bull Head. The technical details are leading edge with elements borrowed from Formula One and aeronautics: black titanium carbide steel bezel, polished, fine brushed and sandblasted steel and titanium cage, and tachymetre and pulsometre on the dial. Jack Heuer’s coat of arms and signature adorns the sapphire crystal caseback, so that every part of this historic watch can be appreciated.

Chopard Happy Sport The Happy Sport Square watch in 18-carat rose gold and diamonds is a concentrated blend of sporty style and femininity. This watch’s perfect proportions display a potent combination of power and style. Within the structured form of the square cut diamond-set bezel, the moving diamonds floating over dial add a touch of delicacy, making this a sports watch that is all Chopard. Set with 5.39cts of diamonds, for the ultimate in sparkle.

Breguet Marine If Breguet holds a special place in watchmaking heritage, it is because its founder, Abraham Louis Breguet, set the standard by which all fine watchmaking has since been judged. And his legend, skill and passion lives on in the timepieces created today. The Breguet Marine collection is based on the traditional Breguet values, yet creating a sporting watch for contemporary living. Shown here in 18ct rose gold, this stunning watch is the watch for a gentleman.

IT’S A MAN’S WORLD

TONY JACKLIN CBE In the world of sport, it takes a truly special individual to inspire a generation and spark off change to the established order. Tony Jacklin CBE is one of the world’s most legendary golfers who almost single-handedly propelled European golf’s development and inspired a generation of champions. Though his rise to success can be traced back to the late 60’s, he continues to be a significant presence in golf and - as his recent appearance on BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing shows – the nation.

60

Tony first gained international recognition at the Jacksonville Open, Florida in 1968. In an era when American golfers traditionally dominated on their home territory, Tony became the first European to win on the PGA Tour since the 1920s. Suddenly people stood up and took notice of the young man from Scunthorpe and so began one of the greatest series of events the golfing world has ever seen. At Royal Lytham and St Annes in 1969, Tony stepped up to the 18th tee at The Open Championship. Playing the hole perfectly, he won his first major in 1969 securing the title by two strokes. Even more momentous was his 1970 US Open victory on a windswept Hazeltine National Golf Course. While the Americans struggled for any consistency, the blustery conditions reminded Tony of home. He won by an incredible 7 strokes, the widest margin of victory in 50 years.

He won his first major in 1969 securing the title by two strokes

Past champions photocall during the second practice round for the 134th Open Championship at the Old Course, St. Andrews Golf Links, July 11, 2005 in St. Andrews, Scotland.

Tony’s incredible success continued into one of golf’s flagship contests – The Ryder Cup. One of the most influential figures in the tournament’s history, he played on seven consecutive occasions, including his memorable singles match against Jack Nicklaus which included the famous ‘Concession’ to tie the series 16-16. Tony achieved even more success when he captained the team on four separate occasions from 1983-1989. During this time he became the most successful Ryder Cup Captain in the history of the championship. During the pinnacle of his playing years, he became a hugely influential celebrity figure and is credited with boosting golf’s popularity in Britain and the rest of Europe. His profile and success played a huge part in the establishment of the European Tour which continues to be the premier circuit for top European golfers and develops countless champions. Tony’s achievements have been recognised as ground-breaking in the history of golf and the list of golfers he has inspired reads like a who’s who of the golfing elite - Sir Nick Faldo, Sandy Lyle MBE, Seve Ballesteros, Peter Oosterhuis and Ian Woosnam OBE to name a few.

62

His achievements were recognised in 1990 when he was named a Commander of the British Empire and in 2002 when he was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame. Since his professional retirement, Tony has remained very much in the public eye. He said: “Most people play a lot of golf after they retire but for me, golf has been my whole life and I have so much enthusiasm to try different things.” His drive and commitment are two of the qualities that have kept him in public focus for so many years. Tony is valued by major broadcasters in the sporting world including Sky Sports and talkSPORT for his engaging personality and golfing expertise. Recent high-profile media appearances include featuring as a guest on ‘The One Show’ and performing on the eleventh series of ‘Strictly Come Dancing’. Tony was the first golfer to ever appear on the show, trained by his professional dance partner Aliona Vilani. During his time in the competition, Tony’s level of commitment was unparalleled and he spent hours in training to make sure he gave the best performances possible.

One of his other great passions is golf course design, creating iconic courses around the world. The knowledge and experience gained from his playing career ensure that his courses offer a challenge to players of all abilities in the true spirit of the game. As Tony himself put it “Jacklin courses are created to seduce the player and keep them engaged over every hole. Tony has a constant influence throughout the entire end-to-end design process, from the first pencil line, right through construction. Travelling across the globe for various engagements, Tony is committed to the causes he promotes. He is a patron of the English Deaf Golf Association, a cause that is particularly close to his heart as he has been hearing impaired for over 25 years, as well as recently joining Rainbows Hospice as their newest patron. He makes appearances at golf clubs around the world, encouraging young professionals and aspiring golfers alike to reach the top of their profession. His years of experience have helped young golfers including 17-year-old Charley Hull, Solheim Cup team member, who is a fantastic prospect for the future. As a transatlantic icon, Tony is ideally placed as an ambassador and his recent involvement with leading Scottish whiskey Glenmorangie has brought unmatched success. He was appointed as an Ambassador to Glenmorangie to promote shared values of excellence and heritage. An accomplished after dinner speaker, Tony draws on events from his glittering career to entertain guests at the functions he attends. Tony Jacklin is a modern sporting icon who has spent nearly half a century in the public eye. Few sporting stars can boast the same kind of relevance and long-lasting appeal that Tony emanates. His list of accolades is incredible and he continues to be a truly inspirational figure to millions.

A respected sporting expert, Tony Jacklin CBE is available for after dinner speaking, question and answer sessions and personal appearances.

an you imagine for one moment what 60mph in less than 2.5 seconds would feel like, and then to 100mph in just under 5 seconds? This is beyond performance car territory, you are on the F1 grid!

In the year of its birth – 2007, the Caparo T1 smashed BBC Top Gear’s lap record setting a new lap record time of 1:10.6. A colossal seven seconds quicker than a modified Koenigsegg CCX... a performance that remains unbeaten even today. With its power to weight ratio twice that of a Bugatti Veyron, the T1 delivers over 1,000hp per ton in a heartbeat. An ultra lightweight carbon and aluminium honeycomb monocoque chassis combined

with extensive use of carbon fibre for structural components and the highest spec race equipment, it finally tips the scales at an unbelievable 550kg. The T1’s slick aerodynamic shape isn’t just for carving its way through the earth’s atmosphere. It generates more down force than it weighs, resulting in cornering forces of up to 3.5g, similar to the face contorting forces experienced by aerobatic pilots. So in theory, you could

The Caparo T1 braking system, manufactured by Caparo AP Braking, provides awesome stopping power, bringing the vehicle to standstill from 100mph in under three seconds. HOME, HOUSE AND GARDEN

Matthew Hoggard MBE

enjoys an action-packed getaway at Watermark Ashes-winning cricketer Matthew Hoggard MBE travelled to Watermark, a unique resort of luxury lakeside holiday homes in the heart of the Cotswolds, for a world-class break with his family. The lakeside rural retreat offers a superb selection of attractive waterside holiday lodges set in 40 square miles of lakes and countryside and offering a variety of different exciting outdoor facilities that are fun for all the family. The stunning location combines water-skiing, wakeboarding, spa, golf, relaxation, beautiful views and great local dining. Boasting six separate lakeside communities, the whole area is beautifully manicured, with elegant landscape parks maintained by the expert gardeners. Matthew was joined by his wife Sara and their 6-year-old son Ernie. The family loved their trip to Watermark and Matthew was eager to tell us all about it.

Friday As soon as we arrived and saw the breathtaking surroundings, we knew we were in for a fantastic weekend. We began with a delicious lunch provided by Gusto Deli which was a great way to start the holiday off! With such an array of different activities, it was difficult to know where to begin but we decided to enjoy some waterskiing on Spring Lake. It is both challenging and invigorating to be out on the water with the scenery whizzing by at a rapid speed. What a fantastic experience it was and we all had a great time.

After that, the three of us were taken round on inflatables, trying desperately to cling on! Ernie had a brilliant time and couldn’t wait to have another go. After the action-packed day, we returned to our stunning detached lodge on the water’s edge and looked forward to making it our home for the next few days. Gusto Deli provided our evening meal and we all went to bed full and looking forward to tomorrow.

“ The combination of activities, beautiful scenery and welcoming atmosphere made Watermark the perfect destination for us and I would thoroughly recommend visiting.”

70

Saturday Beginning bright and early, we were excited to go back out onto Spring Lake for an introductory course to cable skiing. We were trained by the friendly fully-qualified instructors, who made us all feel at-ease, pulled by an electronically-driven cable, we whisked around the lake and loved every minute of it. Ernie and I were keen to stay out on the water for as long as possible, so while we continued water-skiing and having fun on the inflatables, Sara went to enjoy an ultimate-relaxer full body massage at the nearby Four Pillars Hotel. She loved the truly tranquil setting and really didn’t want to leave! In the afternoon, the whole family enjoyed using the excellent swim, steam and sauna facilities at the hotel which gave us a good opportunity to relax. For dinner we visited the fantastic Wild Duck pub in Ewen, enjoying the world-class food and lively Saturday night atmosphere. The traditional Cotswolds country pub was the perfect place to unwind and reflect on a great day.

Sunday On our final day, we enjoyed a walk around the Watermark estate, taking in the country air and idyllic setting. Finally, we rented bikes and took a short relaxing ride around the lake before heading back for a late lunch. After an ideal weekend, it was sad to be heading home but we were all certain that we would be coming back to visit again. The combination of activities, beautiful scenery and welcoming atmosphere made Watermark the perfect destination for us and I would thoroughly recommend visiting. Watermark has something for everyone and lodges range from £175,000 to £1,750,000. Alternatively, lodges are available to be rented for a short break, so that everyone can enjoy a taste of the wonderful Cotswolds. We discover the power of Britain’s heritage brands as they continue to find their way into some of the world’s most exclusive homes.

In a global economic slowdown, China’s consumer sector continues to grow and so does their desire for luxury products. Increasing numbers of Chinese people are travelling overseas to Europe and the UK to get their hands on the latest jewellery, watches, clothing and accessories at a much lower price than they would pay in their home country. They are the world’s highest spending tourists and it has been estimated that in 2014, the Chinese tourist market could be worth as much as £1.4 billion to the UK economy. The question remains: what is the best way to utilise the fastest-growing highest-spending consumer market the world has ever seen?

The Chinese middle class is still rapidly growing, as is their disposable income. In China, the luxury market is worth an estimated $35 billion, second only to the US. Luxury products are highly sought-after and consumers are increasingly using online forums to discuss the latest luxury goods. In China, it is vitally important for overseas brands to be strong in order to develop status and respect and gather a committed following. According to The Economist, from 2007-2011 many luxury goods firms enjoyed double digit annual growth in China. Though this has begun to slow recently, firms like Burberry still experienced a sales growth of 20% in 2013 so far. Travel is a luxury afforded to only the richest Chinese people, and when they visit foreign countries, they like to spend big. Many big businesses are calling for less tightly controlled visa restrictions in order to encourage Chinese people to visit the UK. The statistics speak for themselves; at Heathrow airport, Chinese people account for less than 1 per cent of the total airport traffic but account for nearly a quarter of all luxury goods sales. Michael Ward, managing director of Harrods has said “Chinese shoppers represent the most significant and rapidly growing proportion of our international customer base.” While Chinese tourists can travel across Europe on a single visa, they must apply for a separate one for the UK which is more expensive and complicated than its European counterpart. There are a number of factors for UK luxury brand companies to consider when appealing to Chinese shoppers. Most come as part of a large tour group so VIP rooms can provide a welcoming atmosphere and Mandarin-speaking assistants will certainly help them choose the right product. Payment systems that can handle Chinese credit cards are also an important consideration and have already been adopted by

the ranks of Harrods, the Ritz and Selfridges. Quintessentially British gifts are particularly popular choices for Chinese visitors and are something to take home as a memento of their trip.

Dominic Gomersall, Managing Director of Lumbers Jewellers comments: “We have enjoyed a marked increase with chinese tourists. some of our brands, chopard, Longines, Tag Heuer and breguet are very strong in the eastern markets and we have been pleasantly surprised by the chinese student and tourist spend.” Xu Jing, UTWTO regional director has said about Chinese tourists, “When they travel abroad they want to bring home a lot of souvenirs for relatives and friends, so shopping remains high on the agenda.”

Jewellery is one of the top purchase items of Chinese visitors to the UK, and Chinese women are a particularly important target market as their spending power increases. Watches and jewellery display wealth, prosperity and social standing which are highly regarded attributes in Chinese culture. Hong Kong jewellery firm Chow Tai Fook is the world’s largest jewellers with over 1800 stores across China and the surrounding area. For jewellery and watch firms across the UK, utilising the ever-growing Chinese tourist market is the key to driving up their high street profits. Rolex, Cartier and Tiffany and Co are particularly popular brands for visitors and can be obtained 20-30% cheaper in the UK than China. The typical Chinese visitor to the UK spends £1600, three times the average of other tourists. Luxury brands especially benefit from this spending and many believe it is important to make our country more accessible to Chinese tourists in order to compete with other countries in the Eurozone. Regardless, in the last year Chinese spending in the UK shot up by 31 per cent and shows no signs of slowing down. China is on the move, now more than ever and luxury brands and the UK economy can only benefit from this surge.

With a brave new consumer world before us, the need for global brand expertise is key to creating a sustainable future for the world’s leading organisations. With so many products, brands and individuals clamouring to be recognised the world over; establishing a positive and sustainable public perception is becoming more important than ever. Recent years have seen a gradual change in the brand sphere, with traditional advertising replaced by innovative and concept led campaigns, reacting to the trends created and perpetuated by the global consumer, a clear inversion of the market’s longstanding power relationship and a reflection of increasing levels of independent information available online and via social media. Communication channels are also largely uncensored, controlled at will by anyone who is able to harness the power and reach of social media platforms. A Twitter feed has become as influential as front page news, a YouTube video more widely watched than 2011’s Royal Wedding. The world’s largest media bodies are running to catch up, eager for a piece of the restless communications machine that is able to reach huge areas of the world’s population each and every second of the day.

But what does this mean for the world’s brands? Far from confining more traditional brand strategies to history, our high speed information interchange has allowed brand strategists the opportunity to reach more consumers than ever, targeting them in their homes, allowing them to create strong brand loyalties and develop key followers and fans that help to promote their brand with their own online recommendations.

business and finance Branding experts Champions (UK) plc are ideally positioned at the forefront of the global brand phenomenon, working with their own clients to look at the different ways in which new and innovative communication is becoming a huge part of everyday life, sourcing the very best opportunities and providing their leading capability to ensure that they are able to position their clients at the forefront of their respective industries. As Champions (UK) plc has already recognised, perhaps one of the most startling industry changes is embodied in the increasing move to mobile communication. Both smartphones and tablets continue to grow in popularity, creating a world-wide network of users able to consume huge amounts of information throughout the day, regardless of location or situation. In essence, this has effectively provided a vast increase in the potential reach that brand messaging can have, building upon the strength of the consumer and creating an expanding group of informed brand ambassadors taking the world by storm through their Pinterest page or Tumblr account.

So influential is the empowered consumer that the world’s leading brand experts have expanded their offering, creating entire teams and departments dedicated to positioning and reacting to online forums of information to ensure that their clients continue to be at the forefront of the consumers’ mind. Champions (UK) plc continue to build upon their own team of industry leading experts, ensuring that their market leading strategies have a strong focus on achieving tangible results from market insight and trend led campaigns, as well as generating measurable bottom line results for their clients. A great way to support and increase the impact of more traditional print or broadcast media campaigns, the online world has a truly international audience with huge numbers of target consumers providing a vital supplementary brand support on an international level and the Midlands brand agency have taken their clients to an international consumer group, allowing brands such as Heat Holders to emulate their UK success in both North America and all over the world.

The venue ThaT works for you Leicester’s leading conference and events venue, College Court, has seen a huge transformation over the last 18 months, redeveloping the Grade II listed former Halls of Residence into the state of the art Conference Centre. After an investment from the University of Leicester of £17.5m, the opening will mark the beginning of an excellent addition to the University’s portfolio and will see all profits re-invested into the future development of the University. Steve Crawford, Centre Director said “I am truly delighted that we have been able to bring College Court back to life. In its new role as a professional and dedicated conference centre it will be a great asset to the University of Leicester, and indeed the city in bringing business to Leicester. “We have gladly embraced the architecture of the 1960’s and as a Grade II listed building we take our role as the current custodians very seriously. “From my first visit to College Court when it was very much a building site, it is truly exciting to see the end product we have created. As much as the journey of developing the centre has been great, by far the greatest joy has been the building of a brand new team. We have created 55 new positions with many of staff local to Leicestershire.

108

“We look forward to developing a strong repeat customer base and as the only dedicated conference centre in the city, will complement our colleagues in other venues across the city and I believe a welcome addition to the cities offering when bidding for national, international and large conferences.” With a great range of facilities, tranquil setting and excellent transport links, College Court is Leicester’s premier conference and events venue. Guests are able to benefit from a wide range of different conference spaces, perfect from two to 160 delegates, fine dining in the College Court Restaurant and a restful and relaxing stay in one of the 123 bedrooms, all designed with the business visitor in mind. Located just minutes from Leicester’s vibrant City Centre on Knighton Road, College Court is a haven of tranquility, surrounded by established trees, landscaped gardens and quiet residential streets. Inspired by the surroundings, each of the conference rooms has been named after the many different varieties of tree on the site and the restaurant boast dishes that echo the iconic sixties design of College Court itself.

Charlotte Sanders, Business Development Manager says “I am overjoyed to be welcoming our first clients to College Court and look forward to welcoming many more guests in the future. I feel that the business we have achieved on our books so far is testament to the outstanding offering that College Court provides, with £1.2m of enquiries whilst in build stage with people committing to business off plan. The team here is what sets us apart and I am confident that their attention to detail, passion and dedication will continue to provide an outstanding venue for our guests. “We want each of our guests to get the very most from their time with us and we are happy to discuss the different conference packages and options we offer. Please contact a member of our dedicated team to book your conference or event.”

Meanwhile, in europe, the s&P europe 350 dividend aristocrats index of companies with at least a decade of dividend growth has 40 members.

a 5% dividend yield, which is currently available from uK dividend aristocrats such as vodafone and royal dutch shell, provides a healthy annual return even in itself; if that dividend is growing, and vodafone’s pay-out has risen by an average of 7% a year over the past five years, then the annual return on your investment will also be increasing. With base rates stuck at 0.5%, shares that can offer a decent yield and a consistent annual growth are particularly valuable.

the lists include some companies with phenomenal records. emerson, the us manufacturing and technology company, started to increase its dividend back in 1956; the healthcare group Johnson & Johnson has a 50-year record of dividend rises; sysco Corp, one of the us’s biggest food distributors, claims a 42-year record; and health and hygiene group Kimberly Clark has paid a dividend for 78 years, and increased every year for the past 40. for european companies, the record is generally shorter, but still impressive:tesco has increased its pay-out by an average of almost 14% each year since 1984, while pharmaceutical group roche has a 25-year growth record.

a commitment to growing dividends also imposes a discipline on the company that can also be good for shareholders. Wyckoff says:

aristocrat is an appropriate sobriquet for the indices of consistent dividend payers: over the past five years, both the us and european aristocrats have produced a performance well above that of the relevant wider stock market. as Bob Wyckoff, a managing director at us-based fund manager tweedy, Browne, says: ‘Empirical studies from both the academic and the professional community show that stocks with aboveaverage dividends tend to produce better returns over time.’ that is not surprising because dividends are crucial to investment. While we may all aim to buy shares that will increase in price, the dividend offers a reliable return while you wait for that capital gain. that is particularly so in periods like the present, when economic growth is subdued.

‘Companies across the world, as a group, do not have a great record of investing retained earnings. You often see companies engaged in empire building, getting involved in ill-judged acquisitions. If they are paying out a good proportion of their earnings in dividends, they can do less harm.’ the dividend aristocrats come from a range of sectors although, in both the us and europe, companies from consumer, healthcare and financial sectors are predominant. that reflects the fact that they tend to be mature businesses with dependable income. Wyckoff says these dividend aristocrats tend to be companies that do not have excessive debt, are globally diversified, with multiple products or a diversity of customers. these factors tend also to make them steady businesses, with some resistance to recession. ‘if you have the opportunity to buy into one of these when prices are attractive, it should be a good investment,’ he added.

BUSINESS AND FINANcE

One Of the biggest breaking business news stOries in the east Midlands this year was the annOunceMent that six partners Of the fOrMer rsM tenOn accOuntancy firM had elected tO jOin Mazars. 112

The announcement was quickly followed up by the news that a seventh partner was to join them. Since October 1, well known East Midlands faces Chris Darlington, Alistair Wesson, Bob Johnson, Steve English, David Hoose and Julian Clough have been working within Mazars’ central region team.

“This is part of our broader strategic plan to grow Mazars nationally and gives us tremendous resources out of our Nottingham office and the chance to open a new Leicester office where Chris, Bob and Steve are well known and recognised for their work with Leicestershire businesses” he said. Chris Darlington said: “We recognised that Mazars is a global business with a strong international reach but which prides itself on delivering a personal local service which is partner-led.

In January renowned corporate finance expert Paul Bevan will have joined them, and at the same time Mazars is to launch a new office in the East Midlands. Chris Darlington, Bob Johnson and Steve English will be making a return to Leicester with an announcement of the new office location due to be made before the end of 2013. Mazars’ East Midlands managing partner Martin Rogers said they were delighted that such a well known multi-disciplinary team had chosen to work with him and fellow partners Philip Lyon and Simon Chandler at Mazars in the East Midlands.

“My collegues and I were attracted to Mazars by the firm’s clear ambition, core values around client service and broad business offering, with particular emphasis on owner-managed businesses and medium to larger sized companies and specialisms such as the not-for-profit and the education and academies sectors.

“When the Leicester office opens it will be really be a return to ‘business as usual’ for Bob, Steve and me, and we are in the process of recruiting a local team,” he said. It was the three Leicester-bound partners who first opened an office in the city in 1999, announcing they were “here to make opportunity, not just take it”. Chris Darlington said: “The accountancy market is seeing more and more consolidation as a lot of our competitors seek to grow by acquisition and attack the market of the Big 4. “We don’t believe in size for size sake and remain focused on our core markets, believing that this guiding principle will prove attractive to the quality business we aspire to act for in the East Midlands. “Those who know us will recognise that we are not typical accountants, but all round business advisers and our aim is to advise more widely and help clients achieve their goals.”

The decision to grow the Nottingham office and establish a new Leicester office, albeit with some well known faces at the helm, comes against a background of many professional services firm shunning city centres and a place at the heart of the business and professional community.

“we believe that the cOncept Of the ‘regiOnal super Office’ has nOt wOrked and clients in the east Midlands are nOt cOnvinced, preferring lOcal advice frOM lOcal advisers whOM they knOw and recOgnise as having the grOwth Of the lOcal ecOnOMy at heart.” said Mr darlington.

“Alistair Wesson, for example, has been advising Nottinghamshire businesses for nearly 30 years, and we all have similar pedigrees in our own localities and specialisms.” Mazars’ central region will now include the Birmingham, Nottingham, Leicester, Milton Keynes and Gloucester offices, with services and support available across the region.

PENSIONS & WEALTH MANAGEMENT

The world of wealTh managemenT By Bob Woods, Group Chairman, Mattioli Woods plc

Today, a fast-expanding financial services sector, with players including banks, insurance companies, investment houses, and advisers, has become one of the most important contributors to the UK economy. Against this backdrop of growth, many advisers in the UK are reinventing themselves as wealth managers. However, the wellintentioned implication behind ‘wealth management’ has often been used as a smokescreen by many to sell products, whether or not wholly in the best interest of the customer. As a consequence, good advisers sadly tend to be tarred with the same brush. The industry as a whole has simply not been good at delivering sustainable investment solutions. Most people have had bad experiences at some stage in their lives; be that poor performance, high charges or ill-considered advice and the enormity of the credit crisis, which has affected all of us in some shape or form, will take years to resolve.

So whaT Should you look aT when managing your wealTh? Considering all these factors, the customer needs to proceed very cautiously. Therefore, to make sense of what is an important process for most of us, I believe there are four fundamental areas to address when managing your wealth:

116

1. SeT clear goalS This is the easy part – or is it? Competing demands for investable income and assets include home ownership, holiday home ownership, school fees, retirement planning, and estate planning. Establishing a minimum income requirement at the latest (oldest) target retirement is helpful – the ability to maintain a certain minimum lifestyle in retirement, not surprisingly, turns out to be a very high priority for most once this issue is raised.

WE ARE CONFIDENT THAT BEING BOTH A PRODUCT PROVIDER AND ADVISER CAN BRING CLIENTS THE TWIN BENEFITS OF LOWER COSTS AND ENHANCED SERVICE

2. agree a riSk profile

4. don’T overlook Tax implicaTionS

Advisers are required by their regulator to establish their clients’ risk profiles. Each of us will have tendencies to be either a lower or higher risk investor. However, when investment markets are romping away, our appetite for risk is enhanced. The reverse is also true. Furthermore, many low-risk investors still like to deploy a small part of their wealth on which they are happy to take higher risk.

Against the backdrop of hard-won investment returns, it is doubly important to ensure that taxation is minimised, because without tax-efficient investment, taxation will usually erode investment returns to a point where savings may devalue.

But what does risk mean? It is often confused with volatility. Equities are incredibly volatile because of the underlying pricing mechanisms, but they can produce the goods over the long term. Banks are now vulnerable to the very different risk of banking failure. British government debt (gilt-edged securities) were named gilt-edged because they were regarded as the safest investments in the world but is this still true? In the post-credit crisis world, the safest home for money may now be achieved by investing in a well-diversified portfolio of the world’s biggest companies. The ‘mega-caps’ are a modern phenomenon and these new businesses have become the powerhouses of the world economy, enjoying stronger balance sheets than Western banks and governments. So how can risk be minimised? Firstly, being in the right asset class at the right time is vital, as is being out of the wrong asset class early. This can be quite challenging for the larger investment houses as they may not be able to sell substantial holdings without upsetting the market – so, small is beautiful. Investment managers are often criticised for encouraging clients to buy when markets are rising, but not being so proactive when markets are falling. But, taking profits early will substantially reduce risk and volatility over time. Diversification within investment portfolios is also important. It can take time to build a well-positioned and diversified portfolio and sometimes investing monthly for six months or more provides a pragmatic solution.

For a 40% taxpayer, investment in approved pension arrangements will broadly double your wealth compared with investing in a taxed environment. Even for a basic rate taxpayer, there is an enhancement. Stocks and shares ISAs can also be expected to enhance wealth, as would utilising annual CGT exemptions. VCTs are incredibly tax-efficient, but great care needs to be taken. There is so much to consider!

concluSion Wealth management is not rocket science but, without good advice over some difficult issues, there are plenty of potential pitfalls. A clear focus and a disciplined approach are needed by both client and adviser. Managed well, it will enhance lifestyles and help in the achievement of personal aspirations. Done badly, it is just another way of losing money!

3. underSTand your adviSer’S Terminology Many people are often impressed by an adviser but did not really understand what had been said. It is dangerous for the client to proceed with a recommendation which they do not really understand. A good wealth manager needs not only to avoid jargon, but be able to present ideas clearly.

LEADING DIVORCE FIRM IN MIDLANDS EXPANDS Glynis Wright Solicitors is a leading niche firm for family and matrimonial law based in Leicester City Centre, specialising in offering advice to high net worth clients in the Midlands area. Its founder, Glynis Wright, set up the practice in 2010 and has enjoyed spectacular success in establishing her boutique practice. She now employs six members of staff having recently recruited another family law specialist, Sushma Kotecha, to join her team. Glynis states that the success of her practice is due to the strong reputation that she has built up over the years as a divorce lawyer and the fact that her practice specialises only in divorce and family law matters. Much of the expertise of the firm lies in financial settlements on divorce where the practice has gained an impressive reputation for dealing with complex assets within divorce proceedings. In addition, the firm specialises in family mediation. Glynis trained and qualified as a family mediator in 2010 recognising that mediation is often a preferable medium for husbands and wives to use to resolve the disputes that can arise on breakup whether that be relating to finances or the future care of the children. Glynis states: “Given the choice between fighting it out in court or, alternatively, trying to work out a settlement together with the help of a mediator, most people would prefer the mediation route. When it works, it is hugely rewarding and can be a fraction of the cost. It has also been proven that children can benefit significantly if their parents are able to work things out in mediation since the impact of a long drawn out divorce or custody battle can impact on the family as a whole for years to come.” Following the rapid growth in her client base, Glynis has decided to add to her team by taking on another highly regarded family law specialist and mediator namely Sushma Kotecha.

128

Sushma has years of experience having qualified as a solicitor in January 1991 and having specialised almost exclusively in family law since that time. Sushma went on to qualify as a family mediator in 2010 and received an outstanding evaluation from her assessors who considered her mediation skills to be superb. Like Glynis, Sushma has built up her own following locally as a much sought after divorce lawyer and mediator. Sushma states “I pride myself on my commitment to encouraging a nonconfrontational approach to resolving family disputes. I take the view that court should always be the last option and am looking forward to working at Glynis Wright Solicitors where I know that vision is shared.”

In addition to divorce and mediation matters, Glynis and Sushma also handle the drafting of prenuptial and postnuptial agreements which are particularly important where there may be substantial family wealth to protect. They also handle civil partnership dissolutions, disputes over contact or residence of children after breakup, living together agreements (for those moving in together) and legal advice for those experiencing a cohabitation breakup.

Sushma works hard to negotiate a fair and sensible agreement in her capacity as a solicitor or mediator and seeks at all times to minimise the emotional and financial costs of divorce or family break up. Past clients of Sushma have commented: “I have absolute faith, trust and respect for Sushma in her professional ability, skill, knowledge and integrity...” “I have found her to be knowledgeable, professional, responsive, accurate, fair and compassionate.” “If only all family law solicitors could be like Sushma, I expect that the world would be a happier, less confrontational place.”

Whatever the family law matter, Glynis Wright and her team have the in-house expertise to provide the specialist guidance needed. The team are also happy to offer initial advice sessions for those who may want to confidentially test the water to see what their rights are on divorce before making any final decisions about their future. For an appointment concerning any family law matter, telephone Glynis or Sushma on 0844 225 2790 or send an email to enquiries@ glyniswright.co.uk. “I wish we had found Rainbows years ago” Occasionally, staff at Rainbows will spot a car drive on to the car park. The car will come to a stop, and a pair of eyes - sometimes two, occasionally three or more - will look the building up and down, before reversing out and driving away. This odd routine happens regularly four or five times a year, says chief executive Geoff Ellis. Geoff knows exactly who these people are and what they are doing. “They’re new parents,” he says. “Parents with poorly children, parents who have heard about us, but are plucking up the courage to come in.” Kate Watts was one of those parents. Coming to Rainbows was like crossing a boundary; an admission that her daughter was seriously ill. It takes a while to reach that point, says Kate, 48, of Barrow- upon-Soar, but it was one of the best things she ever did. Laura, now 12, was a normal, healthy baby, says Kate. Or that’s what they thought. She had her first fit at six months. It was a “febrile convulsion”, the doctors said, a type of seizure more common in slightly older children, unusual for a six month old. “Don’t worry too much,” Kate was told. “They’re quite 130

common. It’s unlikely she’ll have any more.” Kate, and her husband Mick, felt reassured by that.

“She reaches for me sometimes. as if she wants me to make it go away”

A week later, Laura had another one. This one lasted for two and a half hours. It was terrifying, says Kate. Laura stopped breathing and ended up in intensive care.

And of course, she can’t. It’s awful. Soul-destroying. “She wants me to help. But I can’t. It makes you feel so... useless.”

Doctors suspect she suffered some sort of brain damage - how much they don’t know - as a result of this seizure, which Kate was told probably wouldn’t happen again.

Laura now has seizures every day. It’s been a journey, the past decade. Kate is a different person. “I was quite materialistic,” she says. “But all this took me away from that, the treadmill of life. Now, it’s all about Laura. I just want her to be happy.”

“I don’t feel angry about that,” says Kate. “I feel sad, really. No-one knew what was wrong.”

Kate knew all about Rainbows. Yet it took her five years to go there.

After all sorts of tests, it was Kate who discovered Laura’s problem on the internet: a genetic condition called Dravet Syndrome, an ailment so rare it affects just one child in 40,000. The condition was discovered in 1978.

“That’s one of my biggest regrets,” she says. “She could have been here earlier.”

“It seems like a long time ago,” says Kate, “but it’s nothing in medical terms.” It was discovered by French neurologist, Charlotte Dravet. She confirmed Kate’s worst fears. The two are still in touch. Laura continued to have seizures. The worst bit, says Kate, for her and for Laura, is the anticipation; knowing a seizure is imminent and knowing they can’t stop it.

It’s not just Laura who benefits when she stays at Rainbows. “It means I can get a night of unbroken sleep.” she says. It rarely happens at home. In a life that has changed dramatically - Kate gave up her job as teacher, saw good friends fall by the wayside Rainbows has kept them going. “Laura can’t speak, so I’m her advocate,” she says. “I want to tell people about her and about Rainbows because I want people to know. “It has been a journey I just wish we’d have had Rainbows with us on that journey much earlier.”

She said: “Children’s Hospice Week is a time to recognise, celebrate and support the inspirational work of those hospices, and those who provide palliative care to these children and families. Children’s hospices provide lifelines to families at a time of unimaginable pain. The support they give is vital. In order to carry out this wonderful work, our help is needed. With our support, those providing children’s palliative care can continue to offer these extraordinary services.”

Hollywood Me Rainbows nurse, Jenny Maine, who was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis at the age of 23 tasted the glitz and glamour of Tinseltown by starring in a new hit TV show. Jenny was nominated by her Rainbows colleagues to take part in Channel 4 show Hollywood Me. In March, she was whisked away to LA where she was met by actress Tori Spelling before embarking on outrageous shopping sprees and experiencing the latest Hollywood beauty treatments. While she was gone, interior designer Martyn Lawrence Bullard and his team were on a mission to bring a flavour of Hollywood style to Jenny’s home. Jenny’s ordeal began in 2008, when she felt pins and needles in her legs and feet while working a night shift at the hospice. Putting it down to tiredness, Jenny was shocked to find that when she woke, she had no feeling from her waist down. After months of medical appointments and tests, Jenny was diagnosed with Relapsing Remitting Multiple Sclerosis. Just before her honeymoon in January, Jenny had a relapse and spent more time trying to regain her ability to walk. Jenny is a fighter and battled to be back at work, where she says being with the children at Rainbows puts her problems into perspective. Jenny said: “I don’t even know how to put it in to words how I felt when I found out I had MS. It was an incredible blow for myself and my husband, Adam.

A Children’s Hospice is There for the Journey Haroon Seedat was the first young person to ever come through the doors of Rainbows in 1994 and in May, he celebrated his 21st birthday. Haroon contracted meningitis when he was seven weeks old and was given 24 hours to live. His condition left him with spastic quadriplegia, the most severe type of cerebral palsy, caused by extensive damage to the brain. He is blind, unable to walk and talk and is fed through a tube. He also suffers from asthma and epilepsy. Haroon needs care 24/7 and his condition can deteriorate at any time. Doctors can’t have told his parents, Hajra and Mohamed, their son is a “miracle”. Hajra said: “On a regular basis, Haroon shuts down. He suffers from low body temperature and his heart rate and blood pressure goes down. When this happens, we just have to ride it out. Doctors don’t know what causes it and they say it is like a light switch and it is up to Haroon to turn it back on. Although I know my son inside out and this happens regularly, it is enough to cause me to panic.”

It was such a shock and the last thing that I ever expected it to be. “But for me, working somewhere like Rainbows really puts things in to perspective. It gives me a level of understanding and it makes me feel very grateful that I can live my life every day. “I couldn’t believe it when I discovered my colleagues had nominated me for this TV show. I am so touched and overwhelmed by their support. Taking part in Hollywood Me was incredible. I was treated like a superstar and I loved every second of it. It really was a once in a lifetime opportunity and an experience I will never forget.”

Haroon first visited Rainbows in 1994 when he was 19-months-old and stayed for the weekend. He now visits twice a week for day care, as well as having medical appointments. Hajra added: “When I first heard about Rainbows, I thought it wasn’t the place for Haroon. I thought it was a place for end of life. I didn’t realise what Rainbows was about and how much Haroon would benefit from the services. “Rainbows is like home from home for Haroon. Everything he has at home, he has more than that at Rainbows. The care is really good and they have great facilities as well as the one to one care he needs. With Rainbows I can pick up the phone and take him in if needed or have someone from the family support team to come over or talk to. “Haroon loves going to Rainbows. We tell him he is going to Rainbows and he has a big smile on his face. He knows where he is. “Now Haroon is older, he is doing more social things too. He enjoys the things a 21-year-old does like staying out late. The staff at Rainbows make sure that he joins in with every activity regardless of his needs. It is fantastic that he can socialise with other young people who have similar needs.”

There are lots of ways to support Rainbows. To find out more, visit www.rainbows.co.uk or call 01509 638 000 131

Pop/dance princess Beth Sherburn is quickly taking the music world by storm with her stunning singing voice and fantastically catchy songs. Her most recent hit song ‘Overload’ charted higher than Example, Will.i.am and Britney Spears in the official UK Club Charts. Beth has enjoyed extensive media coverage across many of the major newspapers, and strong radio support from Capital FM and various BBC Regional Stations. Originally discovered singing along to Michael Bublé’s ‘Christmas’ album whilst working at department store Debenhams, the past 6 months have been a dream come true for Beth Sherburn. She worked on her debut album with Jud Mahoney & John McLaughlin, who between them they have worked with Calvin Harris, Michael Jackson, Busted and Lawson.

Beth has been passionate about music from an early age, taking piano and singing lessons when she was younger. Entering competitions nationwide, she performed in world-class venues including the Royal Albert Hall, Birmingham NIA and MEN. Inspired by Kylie Minogue and Britney Spears, her sound is full of edgy lyrics and attitude. Starting off with lyrics, she quickly adds the melody, using the piano to sound out any ideas. Beth’s most recent single is instant dancefloor classic ‘Overload’. The video was shot in Alicante at some of the most scenic locations and beaches around the local area. The team behind the video were the same behind mega-budget videos from the likes of Kelly Rowland, Pitbull and Will.i.am. ‘Overload’ comes hot on the heels of her huge club anthems ‘Feels Like I Can Fly’ and cover of Duran Duran’s ‘Ordinary World’.

Reminiscent of many a feel good 90s club classic complete with a catchy chorus and synth-laden melody, Beth’s fierce vocal ability complements the beat perfectly, giving her music all of the necessary ingredients to become hugely popular. Beth has spent the summer working on her debut album which is set to take the music world by storm. She has already written over 50 tracks and obviously has a huge amount of creativity in her musical output. With a wealth of experience behind her and a natural tenacity to succeed in the music industry there is no doubt that Beth Sherburn is going to be the name on everybody’s lips in the coming months!
