We head into the middle of the year as a more confident and striving city than last year. We, at Lumbers, receive a daily tonic from clients whose local businesses have thrived in an uncertain economic climate and, to this end, Lumbers has been delighted to be part of the Leicester Business Awards. I am thrilled to be able to congratulate Tru Frame for winning the Manufacturer of the Year, our sponsored award. I chose this award as it is the closest fit to our business with the manufacturing arm that we have in our premises on Market Street, making exquisite hand crafted jewellery. I do hope that all this year’s winners share the pride that we enjoyed when we won the Leicester Business Award in 2004. Business is changing, and the retail sector has been in the news repeatedly as some large household names have struggled in recent times. I don’t think many of us are surprised at the demise of one or two of these businesses as technology has raced forward and completely decimated the manner of selling and the desirability of their products on the High Street. However, the High Street still offers the only safe haven to sell quality luxury goods where the client can enjoy an experience as well as a value ensured purchase. I believe this is what has set Lumbers apart from our competition over the last 132 years and will continue to do so. Our current premises on Market Street is not only a shop, but a theatre where we can build an ambience second to none. But I do have concerns that the Leicester retail heart is moving away from our side of the city with lack of council support, foresight and imagination. We have two years before our current lease is renewed with Everards. I am, therefore, interested to hear from you, our valued clients, whether you believe Market Street is, or could still be, the Bond Street of Leicester or whether Lumbers needs to consider moving closer to the Highcross or High Street areas. I intend to monitor the situation carefully over the next couple of years to ensure that I have the business in the best position for the next generation! Nonetheless it will be extremely difficult to find a building that offers the opulence and splendour that Leah Marks House has offered us over the last 13 years and I will find it very hard to leave our current home. Leicester has a huge opportunity with the magnificent find of King Richard III and we all owe a huge thanks to the outstanding effort of the University team. We can only hope that the City Council, the Church and the University can work together to create a legacy that can enhance Leicester’s reputation throughout the world – it really is our City’s opportunity of this generation – please don’t abuse it or lose it as we can all prosper from the expected influx of tourism and national interest. This could even be Market Street’s redemption! As always I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your continued support and I look forward to seeing you during 2013.

Her work with some of music’s biggest names, including her own husband, has allowed her to speak to a large proportion of the world’s music fans and her style and sound has adapted and led the marketplace, seeing many ‘sound-alike’ copies of her work appearing in the charts. A truly iconic woman, she now champions her role as more than an incredible performer, but as an ambassador for women all over the world. She has the rare gift of true empathy and understanding that, despite her superstar status, is relatable and human. Giving birth to her daughter Blue Ivy Carter in January 2012 saw her retreat from public life for a short period, spending time with her new baby and husband, but later returning to the stage to make the same headline performances that have epitomised her career to date. In just over a decade she has gone from teen pop group member to ground breaking solo artist, actress, ambassador and now film maker. Her documentary Life Is But A Dream was released by American broadcaster HBO in 2012 to wide critical acclaim.
A bold move for someone who has traditionally been fiercely guarded about sharing her private life with the world, Beyoncé explained her motives behind the process: “Making a documentary was a chance to show who I am and what I really care about. I learned so much about myself in making this film, and that is for me, an exploration of self.” Working with director Ed Burke, the singer began filming three years into her solo career in 2005. At that time, she claims she had no clear intention for the footage that was being shot, but the process allowed for more than 7,000 hours of film to be edited for the final cut. At times, she admits it was hard to provide viewers with such an honest portrayal of her life. “Sometimes my instinct would be to remove moments where I came across as weak or vulnerable, but I didn’t want this to become a fluff piece; it was important to keep it real.”
She has always been honest with her audience, penning songs that reflect her own strong character and maintaining an integrity in her performance that is unmatched by any other and it has been a vital part of her identity that her public and private lives have remained separate.

A true artist, her creative vision continues to take in new challenges, of which her documentary was arguably a first step in a notable change of direction for her own personal brand. Reported to have said “I am both humbled and excited about film making”, the future may allow her fans a greater insight than ever into the inner workings of her world as she continues to grow and develop her identity further. Adding to her portfolio of talent does not mean that she will be abandoning the stage and live performances however. The rawness of her onstage presence and dedication to giving all of herself to every show is simply summed up in the singer’s own words “I feel so fortunate to do my job… I love [it]. I love singing. I love the way it feels.”
Identified as “the best in the world at doing her job” by friend and Hollywood A-Lister Gwyneth Paltrow, few would be able to disagree that the international superstar is not a deserving outlet for the adoring recognition she receives. Next LeveL of GoLf with Nutrafit The difference between a talented golfer and a winning golfer is often fine tuning of the body. Hailing from Leicester and playing at Kirby Muxloe Golf Club, Jason joined the professional ranks in 2010 with an impressive +3 handicap. He won the Alps Tour Uniqa Financelife Open in August 2010 after two superb rounds of 65 and 68 saw him finish -11 under par. Competing in the Diamond GC in Austria secured him the title, finishing four shots clear of fellow Englishman Daniel Coughlan. This fantastic result saw him finish in 2nd place in the overall 2010 Alps Tour Order of Merit, a fantastic achievement for someone who gained professional status the very same year. In recent seasons, Jason has split his time between the Challenge Tour and the Alps Tour. In 2012 he won the Kenya Airways-sponsored Pro-Am of the Barclays Kenya Open at Muthaiga Golf Club, Nairobi, beating a high quality line-up that included Nick Dougherty, Maximilian Kieffer and Chris Lloyd among many others. With the help of Nutrafit, Jason wanted to develop his golfing performance to continue to push his career further and compete to a high level in one of the world’s most competitive and changeable sports.
Jason explained the problems he experienced: “At 28, I had slowly started to notice physiological changes. Tiredness was becoming more and more of an issue at tournaments. Back ache was another common concern, often restricting my practice time. Also silly mental errors seemed to be creeping in to my game. Was this purely down to poor judgment, or was there another underlying physiological reason causing me to make mistakes? I wasn’t entirely sure, but in a game where the margin between success and failure is so fine, I thought it was about time I took action.”
Dan Senior of Nutrafit began with a thorough analysis including a biomechanical screening, metabolic profiling and nutritional analysis. All provided key information about how Jason’s body was functioning and the action he needed to take to improve and enhance his performance.

Nutrafit shared their fiNdiNGs of JasoN’s evaLuatioN: The analysis returned a range of biomechanical errors (Biomechanics is the study of the human body and how it moves in mechanical turns). Some were typical of his golfing movement patterns and others were postural. Jason has a leg length discrepancy on his right side, caused by a tilted pelvis and this resulting in spasm through his lower back (QL) area. He has also suffered from spasms in his hips, glutes, and hip flexors, meaning that his rotation and lower body power is often greatly reduced, contributing to his his back pain.
Further spasms in Jason’s upper chest and poor shoulder control also meant that his upper body power was reduced. The findings also demonstrated that Jason’s sciatic nerve was impinged, leading to sciatica predominately on his right side.
“Three months after beginning work with Nutrafit, I am starting to see signs of real improvements. My back pain is not completely gone, however I now know how to manage this situation and with a few simple stretches before and after golf I am able to practice freely without worrying about the consequences. A simple change in diet has left me with increased energy and concentration levels. I have only played 3 tournaments so far, but in many of my rounds I have finished strongly, perhaps a timely coincidence, but I think more likely to be as a result of eating the right foods at the right time, allowing me to perform at my optimum level.”

His physical and nutritional fitness also needed improvement. The resting Metabolic Analysis showed his RMR (resting metabolic rate) was 1160, which is fairly low for an adult male. This is more than likely caused by inadequate fuelling of exercise and sport. Functioning on a very low calorie intake leads to lack of concentration and fatigue. Ideally Jason’s metabolic rate would be closer to 2000.
The fuelling of exercise is crucial to health and performance. Jason uses 12-15 calories per minute when at walking pace, thus uses glycogen stores quickly and is taking from a very low store (1160) as it is. This results again in lack of concentration in particular from a timeframe point of view, usually affecting him from the ninth hole onwards. Nutrafit worked through a series of objectives, aiming to correct many of the problems that were affecting his golfing ability and he is justifiably thrilled with the results.

Neil Back MBE has offered rugby union his international playing prowess, expertise and continues to be one of the sport’s most recognisable players, nearly ten years after his official retirement from active play. His seemingly limitless talent saw him play alongside fellow sporting legends Martin Johnson CBE, Geordan Murphy and Martin Corry MBE, and was the oldest player to make the test squad for the British and Irish Lions. One of the most renowned members of the Lions team, he was named in the squad for the 1997, 2001 and 2005 test games, playing his last top flight game of rugby as part of the team. With this year marking the 125th anniversary of the British and Irish Lions, 2013 is proving to be a true celebration of rugby union and the many different developments that the sport has seen over many years. His career has seen him play for some of the most formidable sides in the game and he captained both the Leicester Tigers squad and the England team to victory. With an incredible 15 years at the Midlands club, Back was part of a team so successful that the 2000/01 season saw them collect trophies for the Zurich Premiership and Zurich Championship, as well as the Heineken Cup at Parc des Princes.

Always intense, always exciting and beloved of sports fans across the country, The Ashes is competition at its very best. The stage on which legends such as Sir Donald Bradman, Sir Plum Warner, Graham Gooch, Sir Ian Botham and many more have made the greatest impact and modern greats such as Shane Warne, Matthew Hoggard and Andrew Flintoff have made their own, The Ashes are the stuff of legend. As England and Australia lock horns once again this summer, we look back at the history of one of world sport’s most fabled rivalries. The first Ashes series took place in 1882, following a defeat by England at The Oval in 1881. Following the humiliation of that defeat, a satirical journalist from The Sporting Times wrote a mock obituary for English cricket, writing that English cricket had died, and that the body would be cremated and the ashes taken to Australia. The English media took up the metaphor and called the next English tour to Australia in 1882 The Quest to Regain the Ashes. Led by the legendary Ivo Bligh, England won back the Ashes and with them a specially crafted urn that had been created during the test in response to the fervour with which public imagination had been captured about the series. Epitomising the importance and fervour of the series, the name The Ashes has stuck ever since and the rest, as they say, is history… Throughout the 1880s and 1890s, England were mostly dominant in The Ashes, with cricket legends such as W.G. Grace, Bobby Peel and Johnny Briggs putting in heroic performances to earn England victory after victory. The tide turned in 1897, however, as Australian legends Harry Trott and Joe Darling ensured the team from down under won the next four series, a period of Australian dominance that was unpicked when Plum Warner captained England to an unexpected victory in 1903/04, and Stanley Jackson did the same in 1905. With The Ashes now a firm fixture in not only the sporting calendar but in sporting folklore, the period from 1905 to the First World War was
hotly contested and exciting. Following the war, the Australian teams that faced England were largely inexperienced and struggled to make an impression against England. However, this would all change due to the talents of one man in particular: the incomparable Donald Bradman, or, as he came to be known: The Don. So prolific was his batting prowess that Nottinghamshire and England’s Harold Larwood developed the controversial and much debated ‘bodyline’ bowling technique, designed to put even the most skilled batsman in a very difficult position. During the 1932/33 Ashes series, Larwood’s newly developed technique of ‘fast leg’ theory bowling proved to be a useful tool in England’s cricketing armoury, both intimidating and unsettling the Australian side. England ultimately won the series, four games to one, perhaps thanks to Larwood’s inspired, if a little contentious, on pitch innovation. England’s victory did little to undermine the international respect for the Australian side however, and Donald Bradman’s impact was immense throughout the 1930s. He became truly great after the enforced hiatus of the Second World War, making him The Ashes’ and cricket’s best test batsman ever. Aged 38 in 1946/47, he reluctantly joined the team in spite of having been ill during the war, managing to lead the Australians to a 3-0 victory. In 1948, he led the famous “Invincibles” squad as they toured England undefeated. Throughout this period, Australia took cricket to new heights of achievement and quality. This test series resulted in one of the most memorable Ashes moments when the legend that was Bradman bowed out of the game. Requiring just 4 runs to end with a career average of 100 runs, he was bowled by Eric Hollies, sending him into retirement with an average of 99.94. In 1953, England finally managed to regain the Ashes, winning a very tightly contested series 1-0 after winning the final Test at the Oval. Heroes of this series included captain Len Hutton, Dennis Compton,

Colin Cowdrey, Jim Laker and many more. A golden period of England cricket ensued and the initiative in the Ashes was passed between England and Australia with closely fought and competitive contests throughout the 50s. However, in the 1960s, Australia had a stranglehold on the urn, with England not achieving their next victory in the series until 1971, closely followed by a retention of the series in 1972/73. The 1970s Ashes series were disrupted due to the advent of World Series Cricket, seeing both teams lose players. England managed to win the 1981 series, which is memorable in part for Ian Botham’s short stint as captain and the remarkable return of Mike Brierley. The rest of the 1980s saw Australia and England share the spoils with impressive performances on either side ensuring the competition remained fierce. However, during this period, from the 1960s onwards, England and Australia both played second fiddle to other forces in world cricket such as the West Indies in particular. The great Australian teams of the 1990s and early 2000s resulted in a period of extended Australian brilliance, thanks to the genius of figures such as Shane Warne, Steve Waugh, Merv Hughes and others. Their dominance left England without a win for 18 years until 2005, when a plucky, confident, charismatic and ambitious England side were hungry to end the losing streak. Including greats such as Matthew Hoggard, Andrew Flintoff, Michael Vaughan, Kevin Pietersen and Marcus Trescothick, and more. The whole country was transfixed by what was one of the most exciting series ever, going right down to the wire on the fifth test.
When England sealed their victory at The Oval, England rejoiced with unprecedented enthusiasm about this most extraordinary sporting event, resulting in an open-top bus tour of London and a meeting with Tony Blair, the then Prime Minister, at Downing Street. The Queen also recognised the achievements of the team members in her Honours List. Following on from the huge success of 2005, England were brought down to the ground with a bump as Australia won the 2006/7 Ashes 5-0 in convincing fashion. England got their revenge though in 2009 when they won the series on home soil and followed this up with a draw of the series in Australia in 2011. That leaves the stage set for a hugely anticipated 2013 Ashes series, which Australia will be hoping to win to re claim the Ashes for the first time since 2007. However, with England currently 2nd behind South Africa in the Test Cricket rankings and Australia 4th, the home side will be hoping to achieve another memorable victory. It is certain, however, that The Ashes will be a sporting occasion to remember.

MH: I don’t think that it will bother them. Andy Fowler is astute enough to know what they need to do and he won’t let them get carried away. I’m sure that they will put in a great performance and concentrate on each game as it comes.
AM: What do you think of the current England team?
AM: Test matches will be played at Chester Le Street, Durham – not a traditional test venue, what do you think to the ECB’s decision to select this kind of venue?
MH: I think that the current team is a fantastic squad of players. There are 15 or 16 great players to pick from this time, rather than just 10 and I think that they are a very good representation of the quality of English cricket that we are seeing at the minute. AM: Do you think that this team is as good as the team in 2005? MH: I think the team is better than 2005, they have much greater strength and depth and I think that they will be a formidable challenge to the Australian side in the upcoming series. AM: Who will be the standout players for both England and Australia for the upcoming series? MH: For England, I think that Alastair Cook MBE, Graham Swann and Jimmy Anderson should be the standout players. They are great representatives for the sport and I’m looking forward to seeing how they perform. Australia should see excellent performances from Matthew Wade, Peter Siddell and, of course, Michael Clarke. AM: England are the favourites for this year, this is unusual– how do you think that this will affect the team and how will they react to the expectation of their fans?
MH: I think that it’s great to get cricket into different venues. A lot of money and time has been spent on ensuring that the new venues offer something really excellent to both the players and the fans and it’s a great opportunity to hold high profile test matches at different grounds. AM: Australia have recently experienced some disciplinary issues, how do you think that they will cope with this situation? MH: I think that Australia’s issues were hilarious! There must be some bad feeling there, but ultimately I don’t think that it will affect their performance. Michael Clarke is a good leader and he’s honest with the team. I think that the time will come over to England with a lot of fight and with great team spirit, and perform as they always do. AM: What makes an Ashes series different to any other? What makes it different to tests against other international teams? MH: I think that the Ashes history plays a big part in how important it is. Of course, there are the same age-old rivalries and it’s always a competition of

AM: What can England take from their recent test series against New Zealand? Some have said that England underperformed – how can they move on from this? MH: We went to New Zealand expecting to win and it didn’t happen. New Zealand played really well on quite benign services and came out on top. England put in a fantastic performance again India and won unexpectedly so that’s a huge positive for the team. I think the England side will be looking to put right what happened in New Zealand and I am looking forward to seeing how they do it. AM: The big question – who will win the Ashes and why? What are your predictions for the final result? MH: England will win. They have a stronger batting side and a really good team. I don’t think that it will be easy though and they need to make sure that they put in a really good performance throughout the series.

Leicester and England rugby world cup winner Neil Back MBE travelled to Watermark, taking his family to enjoy a wonderful break at the lakeside rural retreat. Friday We arrived at Watermark and were greeted by the fantastic team. We knew straight away that we were going to have an enjoyable break and the surroundings were really beautiful. As a family, we love to be active and we were thrilled to have access to the great range of activities straight away. The kids were keen to get into the water so we were all quickly fitted for our wetsuits and we went out on Spring Lake to do some water skiing. We were all fairly new to this sport so there was much hilarity as we splashed about in the water. This was followed by a much welcome and delicious lunch at the Lakeside Brasserie on Spring Lake and we took full advantage of the wonderful food after our energetic morning. After lunch, we were taken to where we would be staying, a stunning detached lodge, located directly on the water’s edge, with its own hot tub and we were thrilled that it was to be our home for the next few days. As we were settling in, we enjoyed a delicious afternoon tea, supplied by the food concierge service, Gusto Deli, and spent the rest of the day chilling out and spending time as a family.

Saturday Saturday started early for us and we were excited to get out and about and explore more of the location. Our bicycles were delivered at 9.30 and we went for a ride around the lake to take in the beautiful surroundings. The kids were really excited to try out the cable skiing and we were provided with an introductory course to the fun activity. The fully qualified instructors talked us through everything and we were zipping around the lake in no time. We were thrilled to sample more delicious food from Gusto Deli for lunch, back at the lodge. After we had eaten, we went over to The Four Pillars Hotel and we had full use of the great spa, gym, steam room and sauna. After such a busy morning, it was a great chance to relax and we felt thoroughly revived for our dinner at the Wild Duck in Ewen. A delightful ‘chocolate box’ Cotswolds country pub with delicious food and a great atmosphere, it was the perfect way to spend the Saturday evening. It certainly was a meal to remember after all of our activities!

Sunday The morning began with more cable skiing. After such a useful introduction to it the previous day, the kids were keen to get back out onto the water and we let them take full advantage of Summer Lake’s great facilities for most of the morning. For lunch, we visited Barnsley Village Pub set in the heart of picturesque Barnsley village, around a 20 minute drive from Watermark. It’s a local Cotswolds stone pub beautifully refurbished with the most welcoming atmosphere, complemented by delicious food, using local produce and ingredients from Barnsley House Hotel’s vegetable garden. We then spent the afternoon relaxing on the deck, followed by a light supper from the wonderful Gusto Deli. I cannot recommend Watermark highly enough. It was the perfect break for my family and we all really enjoyed the combination of exciting outdoor facilities, great food and the chance to relax in the spa. Watermark has something for everyone and lodges range from £175,000 to £1,750,000. Alternatively, lodges are available to be rented for a short break so that everyone can enjoy a taste of the wonderful Cotswolds.

Sourcing all ingredients locally, The Hammer & Pincers offer honest, straight forward food that is all prepared and cooked under their very own roof. The reviews and initial response to The Lighthouse have been quite outstanding, and it’s been absolutely packed since opening on 15th January. The Polis have obviously hit the right note at the right time, offering a relaxed and contemporary menu, and restaurant, yet still holding true to the high standards for which they have become known.

Star Wars has continued to captivate global audiences since its first outing in 1977. With an all-star cast, ground breaking special effects and multi-faceted plot that enthralled millions, it was no surprise that so many sequel and prequel films followed over a period of thirty years, allowing the franchise to continually gather momentum. The appeal of the galactic giant is obvious, and it seems that Disney were only too happy to make a purchase of this magnitude. The takeover came at a time when one megabrand of the industry had taken the hit of a series of box office losses. For them, it seems, the safety of Lucas’ brainchild represented an ideal vehicle to guarantee box office numbers in the future, as well as offering the chance to reignite a beacon of the film industry with a new series of films. But what is it about the Star Wars brand in particular that has allowed it to reach such cult status? Of course, the characters have become intrinsically linked to popular culture, continuing to infiltrate modern marketing campaigns and it is unconsciously referenced in everything from casual conversation to fashion trends. For Lucasfilm, the sale meant a monumental influx of capital and a new era for movie making.
Many are eagerly awaiting the next instalments to see if the same intergalactic spirit remains under a new stewardship. Disney, best known for endearing animation and the boundless energy of the characters, will now turn its hand to intergalactic warfare and the seemingly endless menace of the Sith and other inscrutably evil characters, something of a departure from their classic film output. Perhaps more interesting than the drama played out on screen, is that of the battle for global brand domination. With the face of cinema continually changing, it seems that now, more than ever, some of the industry’s biggest names are choosing to work with the relative safety of sequels, prequels and re-workings to ensure that the box office generates enough money to make the film a success.
Brand power seems to be the driving force behind Hollywood’s most recent cinematic offerings, building great story lines and strong performances around the strength of blockbusting franchises. The silver screen continues to draw crowds and new film premiers repeatedly make headline news, so there is little wonder that tougher economic times have driven entertainment producers to build upon the strong foundations of established brands such as Star Wars.

When George Lucas told the world he had made his last Star Wars film ten years ago, many fans of the brand would have lamented the end of such a unique saga. Many assumed that they had seen the series’ last innings but now, it seems, Disney have taken to the helm to provide cinema goers and Star Wars devotees with several new additions to the iconic series. With a story line that has the potential to extend to the far reaches of the galaxy, there are still a multitude of possibilities for the tale, using the film’s original collection of heroes and villains to embellish the story further. Quoted as saying “Disney’s reach and experience give Lucasfilm the opportunity to blaze new trails in film, television, interactive media, theme parks, live entertainment, and consumer products.”
It is clear that Lucas’ decision to hand ownership to Disney was driven by a desire to see his work of over thirty years continue to grow, even past his lifetime. Eminently marketable and with so many yet untapped avenues for brand expansion, the next film release date is rumoured to be in 2015 and the first of another trilogy. For those wondering what will become of the brand identity under Disney, it seems that George Lucas will remain heavily involved as a leading consultant to the movie making process. His undeniable genius and vision for all of the films is a vital part of their identity and stoic fans can rest assured that the franchise will remain a recognisable part of cinematic history. Disney already have ownership of Marvel, another film group with a cult following that has continued to grow and thrive with a new parent brand at the helm. Combining the strength of its cult following with Disney’s extensive reach, it seems that now is
the ideal time to push the brand into its newest evolution, attracting new followers from a new generation and continuing to dazzle audiences with Star Wars’ unique story lines, well developed characterisation and fascinating sub plots. Lucas commented that it was “now time for [him] to pass Star Wars on to a new generation of filmmakers” affirming his own belief in the continued impact of the franchise as a whole. InherItance tax Four step approach Most people are now aware that there is an exemption which applies to what you can leave to loved ones on your death without paying any inheritance tax (IHT). But is this convenient to ignore?

The problem is that this exemption is only £325,000 per individual. Contrast this to the value of houses and you can quickly see that IHT will be a problem for some people who do not think that they are “rich” enough to pay death duties. The problem is made worse due to the fact that the Government have frozen the £325,000 limit until April 2018. The Government’s own figures show that this measure alone will increase the tax take by £270m in the 3 years to 2018. Approximately 17,000 estates pay IHT at present. It is expected that an additional 5,000 estates will pay IHT as a result of this freeze by 2018. This will also be increased as the stock market recovery feeds through to estate values and will be further enhanced when the property market recovers. The problem I see time and time again is a reluctance to address the issue. It does mean thinking about death, Wills and family relationships, so it’s not surprising that some people choose to defer tackling this. If you mix in the fear some people have when thinking about care home costs and giving away their assets, you can easily understand their reluctance. However there is an inevitability about this tax. In that everyone will ultimately die and their estate will have to be measured against the IHT rules at that time. If that means that the family will be deprived of full inheritance through a deduction for the tax payment, then the lack of planning will be considered to have been at best unfortunate and at least, perhaps negligent? So what should you do?
Four step approach
Firstly take some simple steps:
1. Make a Will or if you already have one, ensure that it is up to date and that someone in the family knows where it is kept. 2. Think about what you own and prepare a simple valuation of all your assets. 3. Then deduct the £325,000 exemption and any other reliefs you know about such as business property relief which can apply to businesses that you own or have shares in, although there are conditions. 4. Work out how much tax your estate would suffer at your death – the rate is 40%
If you are leaving everything to your spouse or civil partner, then the tax burden will fall on their death if you die first. If the tax burden looks high, then this is the time to take advice. Many of the clients I see have got to this stage but get stuck in looking for possible solutions which meet their needs. For example, a recent conversation with one of my clients brought out the fact that whilst he was prepared to make some gifts, he didn’t want his son to have the gift outright.
My solution was to set up a simple trust set up for his son’s benefit but totally under his father’s control. This has the same IHT benefits but meets the father’s objections. So the message here is that you need to plan for the future. If the thought of a large cheque being paid to the Government on your demise is enough to justify action, then follow my simple four step approach and then take advice.

The relatively unknown Leicester-based business, Mattioli Woods, has quietly developed into one of the UK’s leading pension and wealth management providers over the past 22 years. Today it has a workforce of over 270, revenues of over £20 million and is on the acquisition trail… Humble beginnings Mattioli Woods is a family company based in the heart of the East Midlands on Grove Park in Enderby. Now in its 22nd year of business, the company is considered by many to be a shining example of a flourishing business, despite the current economic downturn.
The stock exchange and acquisition trail In 2005, Mattioli Woods was admitted to AIM, the London Stock Exchange’s international market for smaller growing companies, which was a natural step in the development of the business.

The company was established in 1991 by Ian Mattioli and Bob Woods, and initially traded from a garage in Leicester. The primary aim was to provide a pension troubleshooting and advisory service for owner-managers, senior executives, professionals and small-to-medium sized plcs, with the intention of creating long-term values and results for its clients.
Pensions After just two years of trading, Mattioli Woods became second in the UK in terms of new small self-administered scheme (SSAS) instructions and in 1995, the company developed its first self-invested personal pension scheme (SIPP). This led to several key SIPPs with different providers such as Suffolk Life and Bank of Scotland. Mattioli Woods now provides these directly and has become one of the UK’s leading players in its field.
Syndicated property investment Over the years, Bob and Ian have identified areas where they saw potential for expansion and used their expertise and knowledge to take advantage of a growing market. For example, the company’s property arm, Custodian Capital, has exploited a trend for investment in commercial property. In 2002, Mattioli Woods created the first property syndicate in Hinckley, which was the start of the property business. This led to further purchases over the next few years, which has created a nationwide portfolio in excess of 80 properties and more than 1,250 individual investors, with the aim of delivering stable and relatively high-income returns. High-profile tenants now include Premier Inn Hotels, Tesco, Bentley, Honda, Superdrug, Royal Mail and Currys. The East Midlands also holds a place in the portfolio with properties including Gateway House on Grove Park in Enderby, which houses Regus, RBS, and Mattioli Woods; Vision Express headquarters in Nottingham, and Edward Geldards Solicitors LLP office on Pride Park in Derby.

It continued to be a significant year with the company’s first acquisition, the Geoffrey Bernstein portfolio. This was the first of many acquisitions over the coming years, including the Suffolk Life SSAS portfolio in 2006, CP Pensions (Cooper Parry) in 2010, London-based City Trustees in 2010, and Scotlandbased employee benefits and wealth management business, Kudos in 2011. The company continues to expand both organically and by acquisition in its key markets of SIPP, SSAS, employee benefits and personal wealth to pursue its strategy of developing a broader financial services business.

It may be the last thing you’d think of, but it’s a fact that leaving a legacy to Rainbows is a really important way to support the Hospice. In fact, the care of one in eight children at Rainbows is funded through gifts in Wills. There is a popular misconception that charities only need large legacies - big or small they all count, lots of small legacies add up. If every current Rainbows supporter left £100 in their Will it would add up to in excess of £4,000,000, enough to run the Hospice for a whole year! Less than half of the UK population have a Will; if you’re one of the people that has, perhaps you would consider adding a codicil leaving a gift to Rainbows. Rainbows Will Have 10 Shops In The Next Five Years 2012 was a busy year for Rainbows Head of Retail, Karen Bilsby. In a short space of time Karen has been working with others to create a charity retail infrastructure. Rainbows opened three shops across Leicestershire and Derbyshire, but they’re not stopping there.
by donating items or volunteering their time to help. They’ve had a great response to adverts for volunteers. This just shows how highly people think of Rainbows, but they are always looking for more volunteers – there is no experience necessary. All you have to give is at least 2 hours per week.
Some months ago Rainbows ran an online survey revealing more than 93 per cent of people who answered would like to see a Rainbows shop in the town they live. Karen likes a challenge and has plans to open more shops in addition to the ones in Matlock, Melton and Blaby.
Interesting donations have been flooding into the three existing shops, including a few celebrity gifts too. Rainbows’ president The Duchess of Rutland has donated three couture dresses which will be auctioned in the spring. Snooker legend Willy Thorne and his wife have donated some items to the Blaby shop. Other kind benefactors have donated designer labels including a Gucci necklace.
“Our aim is to have 10 shops over the next five years – a shop in easy reach of every supporter.” said Karen, “The shops are already making a good profit and our margins will increase as more shops are opened and fixed costs are shared across more outlets.”
Rainbows needs lots more clothes, accessories and bric a brac, so don’t forget Rainbows on your next spring clean. You can take your donations to any shop (www.rainbows.co.uk/shops) or to the hospice itself. Alternatively, if you are able to hold a large collection at work or school, they may be able to arrange having your donations collected.

Last year Rainbows was lucky enough to have a cameo appearance on Children In Need. Following the show the amount of interest we got was absolutely astounding. In fact, we had so many people trying to visit our website that the site crashed.
Barry Gostinskie, the owner of an independent haulage company in Leicester, wanted to support Rainbows. To do this he came up with the innovative solution of featuring an advert on the back of his lorry.

Rainbows Welcomes a New Honorary Ambassador Whilst filming for the Jeremy Kyle Christmas Show, staff from Rainbows met the show’s celebrity psychotherapist and counsellor, Graham Stanier. He was so moved by our work that he offered to become an Honorary Ambassador. Graham said: “Having been afforded the opportunity to visit Rainbows, I can honestly say it’s an amazing place, and the provision of love and care by carers, staff and parents is beyond dedication. It’s an honour and a privilege to be an Ambassador for such a worthwhile charity and they have my unconditional support whenever they need it.” It’s absolutely fantastic to have Graham’s support. He’s a really warm and friendly man and he’s very keen to use his circle of television contacts to support Rainbows. We’re all looking forward to working with him.

England rugby great Bill Beaumont CBE was honoured at a glittering dinner at Leicester’s King Power Stadium, attended by Leicester’s leading business people. Organised by brand communications agency Champions (UK) plc and hosted by charismatic local Snooker legend Willie Thorne, the event was a celebration of the career of this England legend and saw him share tales from his career, including captaining England to Five Nations Grand Slam glory in 1980.

Bill was joined from the world of rugby by fellow former England player John Bentley, who played four times for England between 1988 and 1999. He was also named as part of the 1997 British and Irish Lions squads, where he scored a hugely influential try against South Africa.

Raising valuable funds for local charity Rainbows Hospice, the only charity in the region dedicated to providing care to children and young people with life-limiting and life-threatening illnesses in the East Midlands, the evening included a fantastic charity auction with prizes including a Chef’s Table at Derby’s magnificent Cathedral Quarter Hotel and a unique piece of James Bond 007 memorabilia. Bill kindly donated his fee for the evening to Rainbows and presented a cheque for £1,500 to Sue Jones who accepted it on behalf of the charity.

Friday 1st February, 2013 Champions (UK) plc hosted their annual charity event at Leicester’s King Power Stadium with a Best of British theme that saw the room festooned with union flags, red double decker buses and beefeaters, all in aid of Rainbows.

The evening is the brand agency’s annual charity event, and a great way to launch fund raising activities each year. Champions (UK) plc have a close relationship with Rainbows, a charity that provides dedicated hospice care to children and young people with life limiting and life threatening illnesses. Their vital work relies solely on donations from the public and businesses to continue offering their incredible care and support.

2012 alone saw Champions (UK) plc raise £159,106 for Rainbows and the Best of British event was an excellent way to kick start the fund raising effort for 2013. The evening was hosted by Willie Thorne, who entertained the guests with his charming style and witty repartee, before being joined on stage by television auctioneer and renowned antiques expert Charlie Ross, who held a memorabilia auction to raise funds for Rainbows. Laurence Robinson sang British classics Land of Hope and Glory, Jerusalem and the national anthem to add to the Great British theme. A British Tenor who has performed the national anthem for international sports matches, Laurence frequently dazzles audiences with his fantastic voice at a wide range of events.

Guests experienced a wonderful evening of fine food from some of the East Midlands’ finest chefs. More than just an opportunity to taste great food, guests were provided with an in depth demonstration of a series of dishes, providing an insight into the very best culinary excellence that the region has to offer.

The evening took place at an impressive home, Wisker Hollow, set in six acres of grounds in the Charnwood Forest. One of the most desirable property areas in the East Midlands, the evening was a perfect opportunity to explore a wonderful home and enjoy fantastic food from Finesse Hospitality. On Wednesday 24th April, guests were personally invited to attend an intimate gathering at the Merchants Hotel, Nottingham, to enjoy an entertaining and informative evening with the acclaimed marketing speaker, Geoff Ramm.

Presented with a champagne reception, guests were then guided to the renowned Merchants Hotel to enjoy a magnificent gourmet dinner. With the hilarious Reverend Alan Haydock hosting proceedings, guests were treated to an enjoyable evening whilst discussing the intricacies of the current marketplace with the marketing expert. Identified as the ‘Billy Connolly of marketing’, Geoff entertained guests with his engaging style and enthusiasm for the marketing world. He shared his secrets to success and commented on some of the industry’s key challenges, which was warmly received by the audience.
