LEICESTER’S FINEST JEWELLERS SINCE 1881

WE’RE MOVING Lumbers are delighted to announce that we are moving. We are going to create a luxury emporium at 62-66 High Street, formerly the Dominoes Toy Store. This stunning building will allow us to expand our current collections and create a destination store. Designed over two large floors, we will be creating a fabulous Horology Room, with expanded ranges from our current favourite watch brands, such as Breitling, Breguet and Chopard, while introducing new brands to the Lumbers portfolio. Each brand will have an exclusive department within the store, making it easier for you to browse between each brand. Alongside the Horology Room will be the stunning new Jewellery Wonder Room, dedicated to truly beautiful diamonds and gems, with stunning new collections. You will be able to select from classic and traditional designs,

through to exciting, innovative and modern looks, so there will be jewellery for everyone. We will be creating an exclusive Luxury Room, full of beautiful gifts, from writing instruments and leather to fine glassware and silver. For our brides and grooms there will be a dedicated wedding room to make our couples feel extra special. Engagement rings and wedding rings will be bespoke made, making each ring unique. Upstairs, we have designed an exclusive, dedicated client area, perfect for relaxing with a glass of Champagne, as well as hosting fine dining and corporate events in the evenings. Opening in the late Summer, we look forward to welcoming all of our clients past, present and future to visit us, and enjoy the experience of what we believe will be one of the finest jewellers in the country.

This edition of Aspirational Magazine marks two new landmark projects for Champions (UK) plc. Champions (UK) plc’s new offices mark a significant point in history for the firm. Just under six years on from the opening of the 6,000+ sqft. office building, Champions (UK) plc have now doubled in size. The expansion provides the capacity to meet ever-growing demand for the firm’s five in-house departments: Creative, Marketing, PR, Events and Celebrity. Champions (UK) plc have grown their celebrity management department significantly in recent years. The acquisition of Warner Music & Entertainments (UK) in June 2014, combined with the 2013 X Factor winner Sam Bailey signing exclusively with the firm in March 2015, have placed Champions (UK) plc as a major force in the music and entertainment industry. At the forefront of this new development for the firm is a market leading website, www.musicandbands.co.uk, that features in excess of 1500 acts spanning categories ranging from headline solo artists to operatic groups and choirs. Champions (UK) plc plan to emulate their hugely successful Champions After Dinner Speakers Agency, www.champions-speakers.co.uk. As always, Aspirational Magazine plays host to some of the East Midlands’ finest businesses who I thank for their continued support in helping the magazine to continue being the region’s premier luxury lifestyle publication. A terrific asset of Aspirational Magazine is the ability to give its readers ‘the’ prestigious businesses and restaurants of the region at their fingertips. This edition also marks both mine and Amelia Neate’s completion of the London Marathon. Amelia finished in an impressive 3:43, whilst I came home slower than planned, in 4:23. Amelia and I have raised more than £5,000 for Rainbows Children’s Hospice to date. Rainbows need all the support they can get and any donation would be greatly appreciated. Enjoy the 2015 Spring/Summer edition of Aspirational Magazine and I wish you a prosperous and enjoyable summer!

Dominic Gomersall writes: Lumbers is on the move again! This edition of Aspirational announces our move from Market Street to the High Street later this year... it’s going to be an exciting and probably stressful 2015 for Lumbers! Market Street has been Lumbers home for the last 40 years. My father moved the business from Granby Street to 31 Market Street when I was some 10 years old. We then moved the business to Leah Marks House, our current shop, 15 years ago. Now with my son, Freddie, also nearing 10 years of age, we coincidentally move back to where the Lumbers business was borne in 1881, with its first trading address at the top end of Loseby Lane, no further than just a few hundred yards away! All being well, I believe this relocation will secure the sustainability of our Leicester family business for Freddie’s generation and beyond, as I sincerely believe it will invigorate the regeneration of the High Street up to Jubilee Square. I am overjoyed and relieved at the reception of the news of our relocation. From my team, our loyal client base, new clients and Leicester business the sense of excitement is fantastic and the support overwhelming. The old Dominoes building will be transformed to an elegant, luxury emporium for our current jewellery offering and watches. These will be further enhanced with additional beautiful ranges from iconic brands and a stunning gift area. I am also motivated about the potential of new events in the exquisite hospitality and VIP floor that we are planning on the first floor. I am proud and grateful that luxury, bespoke kitchen, bedroom, bathroom and interiors business, Plug Interiors of St Margaret’s Way, are designing and sponsoring the champagne bar and its VIP facilities. I am also delighted to announce that local businesses, SLM Builders and Ventola Projects are undertaking the building work and shop fitting on our behalf. Alongside Paul Bernstein of Midland Automated Doors, I believe they will furnish and complete a store that stands comparison with any world-wide jewellery emporium and does justice to the visuals that you can see in this edition of Aspirational by Indigo Creative of Market Harborough. Why the relocation? Our current store is already the leading jewellery brand within the Midlands. It is housed in the most elegant and beautiful of stores. But my belief is that the City centre has moved on and continues to change. The huge success of the King Richard III attraction and The Highcross domination of City centre shopping is pulling investment in the High Street direction. A survey that we conducted over 6 months highlighted that over 60% of our clients’ park in the John Lewis car park. In addition to this, I unfortunately do not see or envisage the investment required of Market Street retailers to propel and improve their businesses and the locality for the next generation on this historic Leicester street. Of course, every huge business decision of this nature goes with a vast amount of fore planning and some risk. I am therefore grateful to our new landlords, the Sansom family, who have not only allowed us a 25% reduction from our current rent, but also a substantial rent free period that contributes significantly to the huge capital investment that we are undertaking. The relief and surprise is, that in a building that is two and a half times the sales area and in a more advantageous location than our current store, we will have lower overhead costs on High Street than we currently do on Market Street – which we hope to pass on to you, our customers, with even more competitively priced quality jewellery! I am also delighted to announce the signing of a real Leicester Legend! Ex-City, cup winning, captain, Matt Elliott, joins my sales team. As Lumbers are long time Leicester sport supporters with sponsorship to Leicester City and Tigers for over a decade, Matt‘s brief is to re-secure our allegiance to the sporting teams and enhance the relationships with current players that we already enjoy, to bring in new business from networking events and work alongside my team in a Sales Ambassador role. I have befriended Matt since his playing days when he won the Lumbers Player of the Month award on a number of occasions! He is a fantastic raconteur with tremendous stories of his sporting prowess who will bring a new dimension to our sales team and I look forward to working alongside him. Welcome Matt! So this column finishes with a real sense of excitement for Lumbers, we are making a huge step forward this year for our business and for the Leicester City Centre. I look forward to showing you plans, discussing the new venture and then, hopefully in late Summer, welcoming you to our new splendid home on the High Street!

ASPIRATIONAL Air Travel Associate

A notable history In operation for over 50 years, no other company can match the experience Air Partner has in the aircraft charter industry. In that time they have flown every mission imaginable, for every type of business and to every part of the planet.

After starting life as an advanced flying school for ex-servicemen, Air Partner was born shortly after hiring a number of aircraft for training. In the downtime, it placed the planes on charter. Soon the chartering grew to be bigger than the training and the business took off. Contrary to belief, it’s thinking small that has made Air Partner a global leader. Small teams of experts take the time to get to know and understand your needs to the smallest detail, delivering a carefully considered, 24/7 service.

Your time is a precious commodity Air Partner’s guiding principles are simple. They take care to understand your exact needs and know you cannot afford to waste time. They attend to even the smallest of details to ensure your private jet service is delivered to the highest standards of quality and value. 14

Air Partner DPS SS2015 V1.indd 14

They will save you all the hassle of conventional air travel and all the headaches of delayed flights and cancellations, lost luggage and crowded terminals will simply disappear. Air Partner take contractual responsibility for all their flights, so you can be fully confident your journey will be completed successfully. Their CharterPLUS guarantee ensures, at no additional cost, that you get exactly where you need to be. Whatever unexpected issues arise with aircraft or airlines, there will be guaranteed back-up aircraft at the ready.

The

Soprano The amazing vocal talents of Lesley Garrett CBE

Soprano singer, musician, broadcaster and media personality Lesley Garrett CBE is one of the country’s bestloved performers. During her long and illustrious career she has won both critical acclaim and the affection of devoted fans and music lovers. She has maintained her reputation as one of the UK’s foremost opera singers for well over three decades and continues to perform at some of the world’s most-watched events. Fiercely proud of her heritage, Garrett was born in the town of Thorne near Doncaster. Although she didn’t come from a privileged background, her parents set an example of strong work ethic which she has carried with her throughout her life. She developed her love of music from her family. Her grandfather was a classically trained pianist who made a good living playing the piano with a small orchestra that accompanied silent movies at cinemas in the Sheffield area. On the popular BBC programme Who Do You Think You Are? she discovered her greatgrandfather was a travelling musician who journeyed across the north of England in the 19th century, playing to workers in packed pubs and clubs in places such as Whitehaven and Maryport. About her upbringing she has said: “Being Yorkshire is not something I have ever had to think about. Being Yorkshire to me is about the fact that I love my family, I love what we stand for, I love the fact that we are resourceful and funny and determined. It’s where I come from and it’s where my music comes from and it’s where I come back to when I want to remind myself about what’s important.”

After training at the Royal Academy of Music and winning the Decca Prize of the Kathleen Ferrier Award, she began her career at Opera North, appearing at events including Wexford Festival, Buxton Festival, Welsh National Opera, Opera North, and Glyndebourne Festival Opera. Her success led her to the English National Opera where she became lead soprano working with some of the biggest names in the business and gaining widespread critical acclaim. Garrett made her Royal Opera debut in their production of The Merry Widow in 1997. Over the years, she has recorded 14 solo albums including Soprano in Red which received the Gramophone Award for ‘Best-selling Classical Artist of the Year’. She also received gold discs for A Soprano Inspired and Lesley Garrett. Her singing career has taken her to countries throughout Europe, as well as the United States, Australia, Russia, Brazil, Japan, Malaysia, Taiwan and South Korea. Her ‘crossover’ style has led her to perform pop classics with the likes of Bryan Ferry, Eurythmics and Mick Hucknall.

Garrett married her husband, Pete in 1991 and the couple have two children. Being a performer can be a very selfish existence but Garrett was unwilling to compromise for the sake of her family. Rather than touring internationally and spending months away from home, she decided to pursue a TV career with major television appearances including Lesley Garrett…Tonight, The Lesley Garrett Show, The Singer, Sacred Songs and Lesley Garrett – Desert Dreams for the BBC. Next came an appearance on the first series of the BBC’s everpopular Strictly Come Dancing in which she reached the semi-final with her professional dance partner, Anton Du Beke. She followed this up with regular appearances on Countdown, Loose Women and The Wright Stuff, establishing herself as a major TV personality. Garrett has also appeared at a variety of major sporting events including several FA Cup finals – the 2000 Final which was the last at the old Wembley Stadium as well as in 2007 which was the first final after the famous stadium reopened. She also sang the British national anthem on the Champs-Élysées in Paris in 2012 after Bradley Wiggins became the first Briton to win the Tour de France. She was awarded a CBE in the 2002 New Year’s Honours List for Services to Music and is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Music and an RAM Governor.

Garrett will perform at the opening of Lumbers’ new £1 million store which will be the biggest jewellers outside London and will feature the largest shop window, by square foot, in the Midlands. She first performed at the jewellers in 2007 at the grand opening of Lumbers’ VIP showroom where she was festooned with £1.5m of diamonds. For a select few nights in November, Lumbers will be converting their shop into a luxury high end fine dining experience for their most loyal clients. The evenings will consist of a four-course gourmet meal with wine and champagne. Lesley Garrett will be performing on the 11th, 12th, 18th and 19th of November at the new Lumbers shop. A true superstar, she is certain to launch the new jewellers to Leicestershire in great style.

Now that her children are grown up, she has decided to go back to her first love: opera. Garrett speaks passionately about her love of opera: “This art form matters. Opera matters. It’s the best, it’s the best. It combines all the art forms. People like Hockney have designed sets, Chagall designed opera sets. Then the orchestra plays a wonderful overture before anyone has even opened their mouths – then you get the vocal element, there’s dance, the most powerful drama in the world. It’s the most powerful music theatre you will ever experience.”

AA SMALL HOTEL GROUP OF THE YEAR 2014 - 2015

Eden Hotel Collection chef appears on Saturday Kitchen Mallory Court, one of Eden Hotel Collection’s Warwickshire hotels, were delighted to have their head chef Paul Foster appear on BBC One’s Saturday Kitchen. Paul, who has already won multiple awards for his food, is no stranger to national television having also appeared on the show and The Great British Menu. Joining Paul on the show were Atal Kochhar from Michelin star Benares Restaurant in Mayfair who served up a beautiful looking prawn curry and celebrity guest Matt Goss, formerly of 80’s Bros fame, who chatted about his Vegas show at Caesar’s Palace. Paul cooked a show stopping dish of Wagyu beef, served three ways as a tartare, a slow cooked brisket and a sirloin. The overall dish looked beautiful, with James Martin calling it “really, really superb” and a “plate of indulgence” whilst Matt and Atal tucked

in enthusiastically to comments of “incredible” and “beautiful”. Saturday Kitchen’s wine expert Suzy Atkins paired a Mondelli Chianti Reserva with the dish, which Paul felt “nailed it” as a partner to the Wagyu. Paul had a fantastic time on the show and said, “It was an excellent day and being on the show before made it easier as I knew what to expect and it helped with nerves this time around. Overall I was really happy with the dish and the food research team on Saturday Kitchen were brilliant. Everything was ready and waiting when we got there. It was a difficult dish to execute in 7 minutes but I think it went well and everyone seemed to enjoy it, though it went by in a complete blur when I was cooking”. Eden Hotel Collection, the AA’s Small Hotel Group of the Year, are deeply passionate about food and boast an incredible 17 AA Rosettes across their eight hotel restaurants and brasseries. Food is at the centre of everything they do and they are well

known for their delicious cuisine. The award-winning chefs like to keep things new and exciting, using the finest ingredients in their kitchens. They constantly move with the times, embracing the latest ideas and techniques, innovating all the time. Eden keep true to their philosophy of fork to fork, using the hotel’s well-stocked kitchen gardens, orchards and bee hives to provide the freshest ingredients throughout the seasons. The investment is the first phase of the Eden Hotel Collection’s renovation programme to restore Bovey Castle to its former glory. The estate includes a 64-bedroom hotel, 18-hole championship golf course, spa, country lodges and an outdoor pursuits centre.

The Edwardian Restaurant will be renamed Great Western Restaurant, as a tribute to the glorious Great Western Railway – the first owners to open Bovey Castle as a golfing hotel in 1930. Great Western Restaurant promises to be just a little bit special. It’s not aiming for stuffy dining where you feel like you need to whisper behind your napkin, but is relaxed and comfortable, yet upscale and classy. The restaurant’s roots are firmly planted in classical cookery, recalling the glamour of the restaurant’s Art Deco origins and echoes of a bygone era. They say the first bite is with the eye, so from the very start you are in for a treat as beautifully presented dishes, using locally sourced ingredients, are placed at your fingertips.

of Champagne or dress it down and bring the kids for a family lunch after a day out on the resort. The Eden Hotel Collection’s Managing Director, Mark Chambers, says: “With its rich history and heritage, Bovey Castle has long been regarded as the jewel in the crown of the leisure industry in the South West. As the new guardians of the hotel, we are celebrating this glorious past with a breath-taking transformation of our restaurants, introducing an amazing new dining experience which will be unrivalled anywhere in the region. We are very excited to be unveiling this new concept and we are looking forward to sharing this with our guests.”

Eden Spas

Eden’s spas are a heavenly blend of decadent products, tranquil treatment rooms and soothing hydrotherapy pools. They’ve got it all, from state of the art fitness suites to Champagne nail bars, retail boutiques to al fresco hot tubs. The spas are an oasis of relaxation and luxury; places to soothe the soul, indulge the senses and revitalise the body.

THE MISSING PIECE OF THE SUMMER FITNESS PUZZLE “KNOWLEDGE ISN’T POWER UNTIL IT IS APPLIED” - DALE CARNEGIE Here we go again, the sun has poked its head around the corner and immediately every magazine is plastered in ways to ‘get-fit-quick’, as well as undo all of the damage the winter has done. You have been given the five best exercises, the ten best foods and the world’s best plan to get you in shape in no time. It always contains the newest, the best, or the most completely amazing technique that has just been discovered from the sexiest and most desirable trainer the world has ever seen. IT MAKES INTERESTING READING, BUT ISN’T IT ALWAYS A LITTLE UNDERWHELMING? By the end of the article usually what you’re told to do is eat more veg, drink more water, cut out the junk and do some basic bodyweight exercises. You can jazz it up however you like but all articles pretty much all come back to that. Remember there are no new fundamental principles in fitness, the simple stuff works really well, every time. All the knowledge that you need is out there, there are countless numbers of free resources all over the internet; free forums, free nutrition websites, free journal articles and a million free fitness videos on YouTube. Everything that everyone has ever known is available if you know where to look. As a result of this obvious fact, I almost never give anyone any nutrition/exercise advice that they couldn’t find by looking it up online. If you look hard enough there is more information on the internet than you could ever need. So what is really holding you back from achieving what you want to achieve? It certainly isn’t someone saying that you need to do some basic exercises and eat well to get healthy; you have always known that…

30

24/04/2015 15:28

BUT THERE IS SO MUCH CONFLICTING ADVICE! Some people advertise the Atkins, Paleo, the South Beach, the Dukan, the Zone, the 5:2, Intermittent Fasting, low fat, low carb, vegan, the list is endless! Fitness fanatics advertise different types of training too, there’s Tabatta training, running, Crossfit, strongman, body combat, Zumba, swimming, walking, resistance training and circuit training to name a few. All the diets and exercise programmes say different things. But here’s the kicker, compared to the standard western diet found in the UK, every single combination of training programmes and diets will have a positive effect on people who commit to them. The truth is they are all good. Last year, researchers published an article in the prestigious Journal of the American Medical Association that tested the efficacy of more than 40 popular diets on obese adults. The conclusion they came to was as follows: “Weight loss differences between individual named diets were small. This supports the practice of recommending any diet that a patient will adhere to in order to lose weight” This proves that any short-term nutritional interventions will work! It is the same with exercise, at least in the short term, that beginning any kind of regime will make a difference to your health - it is all better than nothing. SO IF THIS THE IS CASE THEN WHY DO PEOPLE GET DEMOTIVATED? WHY DO THEY NOT BOTHER, WHY DO PEOPLE FAIL TO LOSE WEIGHT? The big secret to your summer body, that one limiting factor that’s been holding the body of your dreams just out of grasp, is you don’t have the right team behind you. The right team will give you accountability and a proven plan to get you started. They will help you when things get sticky and give you a boost when you let yourself down. They will never judge and only ever give you the best advice and motivation to keep on going. Remember it’s all about action, just doing it until you get your reward. You know that you want to do it, and we know that you want to do it. But when you go round a friend’s house and pluck up the courage to tell them you are making a change and therefore won’t be having any of the junk food on offer; you know they will not care. They perhaps will say, “but you look great, you do not need to lose any weight”, or “don’t be boring it is Saturday, you can start again on Monday!” However with the support of a team of experienced coaches, you will have the motive to keep going when you never would have in the past. You will find out the inside tips on how to navigate tricky situations and still make progress. Persevere, the only thing you will be hearing is, ‘Wow you look great! What is the secret?’ WELL NOW YOU KNOW.

Are you interested in a Beach Body ‘Breakthrough’ Coaching session with Joe Hanney but you are not quite sure if it is a good fit for you? WELL, THAT IS TOTALLY UNDERSTANDABLE! GET SUMMER READY WITH FEMI HEALTH & BEAUTY With the sun making more of a regular appearance, it’s that time of year when we need to think about ditching the jeans and winter boots and start to get prepared for summer! It’s time to pay some attention to your skin. Whether you’re going on holiday, have a special occasion or simply just want to be summer ready, let Femi Health and Beauty help you give your body the TLC that it deserves. A season of cold weather can leave hands and feet dry, unloved and sometimes painful. A manicure and pedicure are simple and effective ways of preparing for those warmer months when they will be on display. Treat your nails to a luxurious Jessica manicure and pedicure at Femi Health and Beauty - specifically formulated to freshen up, nourish and soothe hands and feet, you can sit back and relax whilst the specialised team at Femi treat you. With a file and paint included in both treatments, Femi stocks a variety of nail colours suitable for all occasions, making your hands and feet the latest accessory to your new summer wardrobe. It’s easy to neglect your skin over the winter months especially in problem areas such as your knees, arms and elbows. Exfoliation is the key to achieving healthy, glowing summer skin. Why not opt for a full body exfoliate and moisturise to reinvigorate your skin and awaken your senses. Using premium products, dead skin cells are massaged and exfoliated, removing them from the skin. This is followed by an application of rich moisturiser, leaving your skin soft and hydrated ready for the summer sun. Of course when summer rolls around you’ll want to think about making sure your skin looks silky smooth for time beside the pool or on the beach. Instead of grabbing for that razor, maybe it’s time to pick an altogether more convenient and long-lasting method, waxing. Fast and convenient, waxing has various benefits over the standard razor: - - -

Waxing can make the hair grow slower and finer It lasts longer than shaving as it pulls hair from the roots Waxing causes less irritation to the skin and no cuts or nicks which can leave you with scars and discolouration

At Femi Health and Beauty we offer a PhD waxing system. PhD waxing offers a treatment with the assurance of being free from contamination. A lack of contamination is achieved through individually packaged applicator heads that are disposed of after each treatment, creating the safest and most hygienic treatment process around. Based in Leicester, Femi Health and Beauty is an award-winning salon, which offers a full range of beauty, grooming and pampering services with luxury products including Decléor, Jessica and PhD. Femi Health and Beauty are proud to announce that they have recently won the Decléor Regional Salon of the Year for the 18th year running, proving testament to their reputation as a premier salon and treatment destination. With 12 treatment rooms spread over three floors, Femi offers its customers a luxurious retreat and spa experience. Let the team get you summer ready – www.femi-health-beauty.co.uk

Smooth Radio DPS Final.indd 40

28/04/2015 10:16

Smooth Radio is celebrating one year since the station re-launched across the East Midlands as “Your Relaxing Music Mix”. We sat down with Smooth Breakfast host Gareth Evans, mid-morning presenter Kate Garraway and Emma Caldwell from Smooth Drive Home to reflect on the last year and ask what it means to be part of Smooth, both on and off air: Emma: Radio is instant, that’s why I love it. If something happens, we’re on it. Whether it’s a news story or a travel update for the East Midlands or simply if someone sends a great text; it can change the whole focus of the show. Gareth: Radio is a friendly and instant one-to-one medium. You can come up with an idea and have it on the air within seconds! I love Smooth because there’s a very friendly, relaxed feel about it, from the music we play on air to the atmosphere in the office. It’s a radio station that knows what it’s about. Kate: The music of Smooth is incredible. It is designed to be a sanctuary in the midst of a busy life, whether you’re with your kids, at work or rushing around with the busy lives that we all have these days. It’s a place where you can go to relax and take some time out, which is incredible. I just think it’s brilliant!

Throughout the year, Kate, Gareth and Emma have all enjoyed getting to know the Smooth listeners who tune in across the East Midlands, as well as doing a job they love. Kate: The great thing about being a radio presenter is that you have a chance to really be part of people’s lives. People are listening to you as they’re in the car, as they’re at home and as they’re at work. They’re listening with friends, they’re listening in cafes and you really feel like you’re part of people’s lives in a different kind of way. Being part of something like Smooth, watching it grow and develop, has been really exciting. Gareth: I love presenting Smooth Breakfast. It’s a privilege being the first to talk to listeners in the East Midlands when they wake up, while playing really great music. I get paid to have a friendly chat and play their favourite songs. What more could you ask for?

Smooth Radio DPS Final.indd 41

Emma: Being a radio presenter is a fantastic job to have – who else gets to talk to thousands of people every day whilst playing amazing music? Smooth can change your mood and after a hard day at work, hearing a song on your drive home can instantly transform how you feel.

What’s been the highlight for Kate, Gareth and Emma? So much has happened in the last year that it’s difficult for them to choose just one! From spectacular giveaways to meeting the listeners, it has been an exciting 12 months for the Smooth team... Kate: The biggest highlight was getting through my first show without crashing off air! That was so exciting because I never thought I would be able to do that. But also, we’ve done various big competitions over the course of the year and that’s when you get to really find out how much people are enjoying the show. Recently, someone came up to me and said, “I really love your show on Smooth” and I thought, “Wow, that year is now complete. How exciting!” Gareth: I’ve had two highlights from the last year. I loved Smooth Ladies Day at Leicester Racecourse. It was great to take to the stage and hear the love for Smooth from the audience. Then, after admiring her for years, I got to work with the brilliant Emma Caldwell from Smooth Drive Home. Emma: Gareth, what a charmer! It’s such a pleasure

being a Smooth radio presenter and playing music that I, and my listeners are absolutely passionate about. I wouldn’t change it for the world! I can’t think of a day where I haven’t wanted to come to work and that’s a great feeling.

Tune in to Your Relaxing Music Mix on Smooth Radio, available across the East Midlands on 106.6 FM, DAB digital radio, at smoothradio.com and on the Smooth app.

BEUATY, HEALTH AND LIFESTYLE

KEEP HAPPY AND HEALTHY

WITH HEAT HOLDERS Alternative remedies to illnesses are becoming increasingly popular as people are becoming more aware of what they are ingesting into their body. With antibiotics and medicines so readily available and potentially containing harmful, dangerous chemicals, natural and organic treatments are becoming the go – to for anyone suffering with common ailments. One illness that many people are unaware of is Raynaud’s Disease, a rare condition that many people who suffer with have no idea it even exists, let alone the symptoms. Raynaud’s Disease is a condition which restricts the blood supply to the extremities causing these parts of the body, normally the fingers, to change colour. During an attack fingers turn white or, in some extreme cases, blue and painful before finally becoming bright red when the blood flow has returned. Many think that the cold weather is the sole reason behind a Raynaud’s attack, but actually, there are a number of factors that can trigger an episode; emotions like anxiety, smoking and touching cold objects can play a part in Raynaud’s too. There are many ways that you can control Raynaud’s, from what you wear to the food you eat. It is advised to ensure you have a full winter wardrobe to take you through the cold months so you’re always kept wrapped up. Thermal underwear, hats, gloves, socks and scarves are all advised so that extremities are covered and protected. Heat Holders thermal socks are ‘The Ultimate Thermal Socks’ and have been designed to keep you warm and comfortable. With a tog rating of 2.34, Heat Holders utilise innovative knitting technology to lock in warm air, holding this closer to the skin and keeping feet warmer for longer. As well as their famous socks, Heat Holders have expanded their range to include joint warmers, blankets, jumpers, neckwarmers, hats, gloves, thermal underwear, tights and leggings all in the name of making life warmer. Since 2006, Heat Holders have revitalised the thermal marketplace with their innovative design and incredible warmth. They are now a much loved global brand sold in a number of countries across the world including the USA, Canada and Australia. The initial mission was to create the warmest sock whilst ensuring value for money for their customers. It took two years of experimentation and testing but

finally a yarn blend was decided upon, and an innovative brushing process developed. A looped pile was created to ensure warm air could be locked in close to the skin, achieving a 2.34 comparing to a 0.89 for ordinary thermal socks. After nine years of success and now a patented process, Heat Holders have a prominent position in the thermal marketplace and have recently become a go – to for many people who suffer from diseases like Raynaud’s. Heat Holders have received many testimonials from their customers to say how their Raynaud’s have been helped by Heat Holders products. Raynaud’s is one of many diseases that can be helped by Heat Holders’ cosy products; arthritis, peripheral neuropathy, chilblains, diabetes and poor circulation are just a few conditions that induce coldness on their victims. Some of their symptoms can be relieved by keeping warm and some Heat Holders customers who suffer from a variety of these conditions have been in touch to tell their personal story of how they have been helped. Heat Holders can also aid in keeping you warm in bed, a technique which has been proven to enhance your night’s sleep. According to studies from Basel University “cold feet affect our sleep patterns, keeping us from drifting off”. The study found that “warm feet promote the rapid onset of sleep thus Heat Holders offer a straightforward cost effective solution to help stop people tossing and turning whilst trying to drift off to sleep.” The brand new snuggle up blankets are cosy enough to put over your duvet, giving you that added extra warmth and cosiness. It’s not only warming products that can help to alleviate health problems relating to keeping people warm. When it comes to your diet, protein and carbohydrates are essential in keeping people warm and giving you energy. Hot meals are perfect for warming you from the inside out, and when you are between meals keep hydrated with warm drinks. Try to stay away from heavily caffeinated drinks though as caffeine can cause the blood vessels to narrow, restricting blood flow to the extremities. A popular drink amongst Raynaud’s sufferers for instance is ginger, lemon juice, honey and water which is warming and also helps to boost circulation.

IT’S A MAN’S WORLD

THE RUNNING MAN A story of true inspiration from one of Britain’s greatest atheletes, Derek Redmond British 400 metre runner Derek Redmond took gold at World, Commonwealth and European levels during an outstanding athletic career but is arguably best remembered for an incident during the 1992 Olympic semifinal in Barcelona. Tipped for gold, injury struck to rob him of the opportunity of a lifetime. Aspirational Magazine spoke to a man who refused to quit. A promising 100 and 200 metre sprinter as a teen, Derek only ran his first 400m aged 15 when a teammate didn’t show up. Within three years though, he had taken the British scene by storm and only narrowly missed out on a place in the GB squad for the 1984 LA Olympics. The following year he broke the British record and forced his way into the squad for the European Cup in Moscow, where he took bronze. Britain was blessed with 400m talent and injuries plagued his development. Competition was fierce but Derek was up to the challenge. “There were some serious guys at the time – the likes of Kris Akabusi, Phil Brown, Todd Bennett and Gary Cooke - so I had plenty to aim at domestically. Roger Black was coming through and we had a rivalry that helped us both. We broke into the relay squad together and soon began to get the rewards.” The squad took gold at both the Europeans in Stuttgart and the Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh in 1986 but played second fiddle to the Americans on the global stage. “We were a close-knit unit and highly motivated to knock the Yanks off their perch. They’d

dominated the relay for over 50 years but we knew we had it in us to tip the balance in our favour.” “By the World Championships of 1991 in Tokyo, our time had come and Kris caught Antonio Pettigrew on the last leg to pip him at the line. The World title was the highlight of my career without doubt but I do sometimes wonder what might have been in Barcelona.” Derek went into those Olympics in the form of his life and pundits saw the American Quincy Watts as his main competition for gold. He cruised through the heats with plenty left in the tank and as the gun went in the semi, Derek felt his third British record was very much on the cards. “Moving into the back straight I genuinely felt I was going quicker than ever. Suddenly I heard a funny pop and, thinking it was crowd noise, I told myself to concentrate. Three or four strides later, I knew it was nothing of the sort. I hit the deck in searing pain, thinking ‘why me?’, ‘why now?’” Derek had badly torn his hamstring but the doleful questions only lasted a matter of seconds. “I was convinced I could still catch the others despite the pain. There was no way I was giving up on my dream, so crazily, I hobbled after them. By the time I’d got to the final bend, I looked over to see they’d all finished.” Derek ploughed on in tears and the Spanish crowd, recognising his ‘never-say-die’ commitment roared him on. As he entered the final straight, his father Jim, who had slipped through the security cordon, suddenly appeared at his side out of nowhere.

“Today he’d have been wrestled to the ground by stewards but he somehow smuggled himself onto the track, helped me back into Lane 5 and supported me almost up to the line. I was inconsolable in the medical room but my Dad was an absolute rock. We had to leave separately, unfortunately, and I had to run the media gauntlet alone until a two and a half hour press conference the next day, where again he was fantastic.” The incident is now remembered as summing up the Olympic spirit. In 2012 viewers of the US TV channel, NBC, voted it their third greatest Olympic moment ever and President Barack Obama has referenced it as an example of the triumph of the human spirit. “Really, the worst thing for me was not missing out on a possible medal but not knowing how fast I could have gone. My coach was predicting I’d dip under 44 seconds, maybe down to 43.8 - we’ll never know but I felt the best I ever did that day.” 23 years later Iwan Thomas’ British record remains 44.36.

“When the human spirit triumphs over an injury that should have been impossible to overcome."

- President Barack Obama on Derek Redmond By carrying on Derek had aggravated the injury so much his hamstring had detached from the bone. Surgery followed but rehabilitation was difficult and he went under the knife a total of seven times in 18 months. In 1994 his surgeon told him to “get a real job as you’ll never compete for your country again!” Unsurprisingly, these words served only as motivation and Derek wasn’t done yet. Having eventually recovered, he turned his attention to basketball, another of his favourite sports. Derek soon found himself playing for the Birmingham Bullets and was then invited to try out for England. In making the team Derek defied his doctor’s negativity. Shortly after, he sent the specialist a photo of his international basketball debut, signed "Derek Redmond, international athlete and basketball international!" With that in the bag he then looked at rugby and came within a whisker of making the England 7s squad, narrowly missing out on becoming the first Briton to represent his nation at three sports. Derek now enjoys further success as one of the country’s leading motivational speakers, drawing on his experiences to show others that adversity is there to be overcome. No matter whether it’s sport, business or life in general, he sees the same principles as applying. He has the communication skills to get his message over and shares his own personal strategies to inspire others. Difficulty comes to us all in time but we can learn from both Derek’s ambition and dogged determination and realise that we must face our challenges head on. IT’S A MAN’S WORLD

Teenager Lee Jackson is a rising star in the world of superbikes, and has progressed quickly through the ranks to compete at the highest UK level on the MCE Insurance British Superbike Championship. With support from businesses including leading construction companies Willmott Dixon and Stirlin Developments, Lee has an exciting year ahead of him as he takes on some of the world’s greatest riders on the nation’s biggest stage. Lee is from a family of top Superbike racers, and his father and uncle competed regularly at the highest British level and were also selected at World Level. Taking up the sport from a young age, Lee’s hard work and dedication have continued to pay off at every level at which he has competed. Riding for Buildbase BMW in his first full season on the Championship, Lee’s teammate is three-time champion Ryuichi Kiyonari. The Japanese rider is one of the legends of the sport, and Lee will certainly benefit from his years of experience. We were lucky enough to have the opportunity to speak to Lee about his experiences in the world of superbikes and the speed of his development. Though he is just 19-years-old, he takes his career seriously and has big ambitions for the future: “Coming from a family of motorbike lovers has had a big impact on me. When I finished my first full season in 2009, my uncle was still racing, and he was always a big inspiration. I finished as runner-up in the Dunlop Aprilia Superteens after falling off on the last lap of the final race. It was pretty devastating, but I just kept working hard to become as good as I could possibly be. 2012 was a real breakthrough year for me after finishing first on the National Superstock 600 Championship. After that I had two good seasons on the Pirelli National Superstock 1000 Championship before I stepped up to the British Superbike Championship. I’m always looking to improve and develop wherever I can, and there’s no better place to do that than on the British Superbike Championship. It’s a real honour to race alongside someone as experienced as Ryuichi, and I’m always learning from him. Even though it’s my first full season, I want to be as competitive as possible. I’ve set myself a target of finishing in the top 15 of every race, and finishing in the top 20 overall. With so many fantastic riders, it’s not going to be easy but I’m determined. At the moment, I’m fitting my training around work but I’m hoping to go full-time in the next couple of years so I can dedicate all my time and attention to achieving my goals. The Championship keeps getting bigger and better every year with fans watching from all over the world. My first race of the season at Donington Park was a decent start, but I’m always looking to make improvements wherever I can.” Lee’s progress has caught the attention of many followers including British superbike legend Chris Walker who said: “He’s one of those lads that people will really warm to. It will be great for the sport and his family if he succeeds. What I like and respect about Lee is the way he behaves off the track. He’s very professional. He’s in the gym and getting professional help, not just doing it on his own.” Lee is being backed by a host of top businesses. One of those is Willmott Dixon who have built their reputation as one of the UK’s largest privately-owned contracting, residential development and property support companies by undertaking their activities in a sustainable and responsible manner that contributes to society as a whole. The business became the only company in their sector to win a Queen’s Award for Enterprise for sustainable development in 2014 regarded as the UK’s most prestigious business accolade. Business Development Manager, David Ford said: “We are delighted to throw our support behind Lee, who is a local rising star helping to put the Midlands on the map. This is something we are particularly passionate about at Willmott Dixon and we support an array of projects throughout the East Midlands in a variety of sectors that benefit the local community.” Another company sponsoring Lee is Stirlin Developments, which provide a bespoke building service for both commercial and residential customers. Managing Director, James Kirby commented: “We are extremely proud to support Lee as he competes at the highest level, taking on some of the world’s greatest riders. He’s a local lad and the whole community wants to see him do well. Lee provides a fantastic example to young people about the benefits of working hard and being dedicated to achieving their goals.”

As one of the brightest young talents in the sport, Lee Jackson is one to watch this season and for the future. If you would like to sponsor British Superbike Championship rider Lee Jackson,

IT’S A MAN’S WORLD

Tony Jacklin CBE

COURSE DESIGN

Clubhouse at The Concession

Having turned professional in 1962 Tony Jacklin CBE now has well over 50 years’ experience of the world of golf – a world he has done so much to shape. Yet playing the game is by no means the limit of his talents and, following his retirement from professional tour golf, Tony began a successful career as a broadcaster and brand ambassador and has also forged a formidable reputation as a master golf course designer through the operations of Tony Jacklin Course Design. Under the banner of his group, Tony has driven the design and development of courses in the USA with The Concession Club, the Tony Jacklin Casablanca Course in Morocco, Secret Valley Golf in Cyprus and the Channel Islands at St. Pierre Park Golf Club in L’Ancresse. He is keen to nurture golf’s future and his design efforts often focus on building quality academies where youngsters enjoy scholarships and expert technical coaching. Beyond that his talents are also applied to remodelling existing courses to give them a fresh appeal and to offer players a greater challenge. For Tony, nothing beats dreaming up first class golf courses and then turning those dreams into reality. As he himself says, “I get a great sense of satisfaction from seeing our plans come to fruition. When ideas form in your mind, you’re never too sure how they will pan out in reality but, with the help of my superb team and our partners, they tend to go way beyond even my expectations.” A British pioneer on the US golf circuit in the 1960s, Tony incorporated the professionalism he saw there in his game and reaped the rewards. Not only did he win The Open in 1969 and the US Open a year later but he was able to play a key role in revolutionising European golf as a whole during his highly successful, four-time Ryder Cup captaincy.

Secret Valley Golf in Cyprus

Tony is nothing if not a man of vision, as his golfing exploits confirm, and his course design philosophy centres on three themes. First and foremost, Tony sees it as vitally important that the courses he designs are sustainable on four fronts: playing performance, long-term economic viability, environmental stewardship and social responsibility. The first two are golfing matters primarily but he aims to ensure his courses are not high maintenance and, through clever drainage and water collection schemes, they largely self-irrigate.

“Golf courses should be sustainable and cost effective to maintain first of all, but they should also be fun and bring joy to players of all abilities.” In terms of social responsibility, Tony wants his courses to be inclusive and encourage people, particularly the young, to take up the game. He has a proud record of incorporating Academy facilities into his designs and establishing scholarships that allow youngsters to enjoy the very best tuition and coaching. Second, he is in the business of presenting players with a challenge. He sees the game as a puzzle to be solved as much as he sees it as a technical endeavour and his courses reflect this by asking questions of every level of golfer.

Tony Jacklin CBE with Magnolia Park Hotel, Golf and Country Club owner Alan Pither

Opening of the Tony Jacklin Casablanca Course in Morocco

Third, put simply, the game should be fun and capable of bringing joy to all players. He wants more people to get involved in golf and, by making his courses enjoyable, he hopes to get as many people as possible hooked on the game in the same way that he is. Tony works very closely with one of the world’s foremost golf course architects, Hans-Georg Erhardt, whose Austria-based Golf & Land Design company was set up in 1984 and in the 30 intervening years has worked on almost 80 golf course projects in Europe, Africa, Asia and the Americas. He and Tony recently collaborated on the highly successful course redesign project at Secret Valley Golf Club near Paphos in Cyprus. Jacklin’s efforts are currently concentrated on Magnolia Park Golf and Country Club in Buckinghamshire, whose owner, Alan Pither, has recently embarked on a £5 million, 5 year project aimed at turning the venue into one of the region’s premier golf destinations. Tony is lending his renowned golf course architecture eye to a new Par 3 Championship course, a brand new state-of-the-art driving range and a bespoke Tony Jacklin Golf Academy. Having taken just one look at the Club’s plans, Tony was keen to offer his professional advice and assistance to all of their team. Jacklin’s management company, Champions (UK) plc, brokered the agreement between Tony and Magnolia Park and, as a leading branding and communications agency, has devised a number of high impact public relations campaigns to promote the Buckinghamshire development. In the same vein, Champions (UK) plc are currently engaged in the promotion of two Tony Jacklin Signature courses in Morocco. In June 2014 Tony flew out to attend the launch of The Tony Jacklin Casablanca Course at the newly built

Tony Jacklin at The Concession a course he designed with Jack Nicklaus

Bouskoura Golf City complex set in forest and lake land outside the famous city. He designed the 7,024 yard course with the help of architects, Blake Stirling and Marco Martin, who run the Madrid-based Global Golf Company. The complex offers upscale apartments, blending original architecture with modern comfort, and is complemented by a hotel and spa, a stylish shopping area and first rate leisure and educational facilities. Tony’s second North African adventure will see the opening in spring/ summer 2015 of the fantastic Argan Golf Resort close to the tourist Mecca of Marrakech. Just minutes from the major sights of this historic city, the Argan Golf Resort features another incredibly picturesque course nestled amid some of the finest accommodation and amenities on offer in Morocco.

IT’S A MAN’S WORLD

Paul Broadhurst poses with the trophy after winning The Estoril Open de Portugal at The Quinta da Marinha Golf Course.

PAUL

BROADHURST The careers of Paul Broadhurst and David Gilford have been long and successful but they are not over by a long chalk. As the pair prepare to debut on the European Senior Tour later this year, they gave Aspirational Magazine their thoughts on this exciting new chapter.

“I’d earnt my place but I was playing with legends of the game and didn’t really know what to expect. Competition was fierce and the crowd was more like something you’d expect at the football – the rowdiness went some way towards earning that year’s event the nickname of ‘War on the Shore’.”

Turning professional in 1989, it took Paul Broadhurst just nine tournaments to claim his first European Tour title at the Credit Lyonnais Cannes Open. By the end of the year he had been awarded the Sir Henry Cotton Rookie of the Year Award and within two years he was selected for the Ryder Cup at Kiawah Island in South Carolina.

“Perhaps that side of things affected me as I lost my two foursomes but I was very disappointed to only play those two matches. I was due to play Steve Pate in the Sunday singles and, although he’d had a car crash just before the tournament, he’d lost a fourball against Monty and Bernard Langer. I remember Tony Jacklin telling me Pate had pulled out of our game at the last minute and, despite Europe taking victory, I was nonplussed to say the least.”

“I was so proud to go to Kiawah Island and found myself paired with Ian Woosnam OBE. We dovetailed perfectly to win our fourball and have been pals ever since. I ended up playing two matches, including beating Mark O’Meara in the singles, so I can boast a 100% Ryder Cup record, but I do wish I’d played at least one more match.”

Paul Broadhurst Player Profile

Leading amateur at the 1988 Open Championship Sir Henry Cotton European Tour Rookie of the Year 1989 Ryder Cup debut at the ‘War on the Shore’, Kiawah Island, 1991 Six European Tour wins over three decades Rare and successful defence of the Portuguese Open title 2006 Veteran of almost 600 European Tour events

David Gilford turned pro in 1986 and arguably didn’t adjust to professional life quite as quickly as Broadhurst. Nonetheless a string of strong performances in 1991 saw him finish 9th on the European Order of Merit and join the same Ryder Cup team as Paul.

David Gilford Player Profile

Represented Great Britain and Ireland at the 1984 Eisenhower Trophy and 1985 Walker Cup Featured in two Ryder Cups, 1991 and 1995, winning the trophy in his second appearance Six European Tour wins in four years from 1991 to 1994 Successfully defended the Moroccan Open in 1993 Finished inside the European Tour Order of Merit top 10 on two occasions However, the disappointment didn’t stop David embarking on the best spell of his career, backing up his win at the English Open that year with victory at the Moroccan Open in 1992. Successful title defences are rare in golf but he returned to Morocco in 1993 to complete the task and took the Portuguese Open for good measure. 1994 saw him claim both the Turespana Open De Tenerife, and the European Open, victories which saw him reach 7th on the Order of Merit and earn a spot in the 1995 Ryder Cup team. His fortunes improved second time round.

“I was lucky enough to win fourballs with both Seve and Langer and beat Brad Faxon on the Sunday and felt I contributed to our triumph a great deal more than 4 years earlier. I’d worked hard on my game in the preceding years and got certain rewards of which I’m proud, but I look back on that Ryder Cup as the highlight of my career.” Paul says his most satisfying win came at the Benson & Hedges International Open in 1993. “That was the strongest field I’ve managed to beat, with the likes of Mark James and José María Olazábal close behind me, and I played the course just as I’d planned. In ’95 I won the French Open by 8 strokes and that was very pleasing too – it’s always a tough course and one of the most challenging weeks on tour.”

“I ended up playing two matches, beating Mark O’Meara in the singles, so I can boast a 100% Ryder Cup record Paul pulled off his own title defence at the Portuguese Open in 2006. “In 2005 it was tight and Barry Lane was unfortunate on the 18th hole which allowed me to win from the clubhouse. The following year, however, I felt I really deserved to retain my title. It was special to win the same event on a different course and that day will always hold wonderful memories. It seems a long time ago now but I’ve not lost any of the desire.” Both players have had a few years away from the European Tour but, as they approach 50, their appetite for golf hasn’t diminished. Paul joins the Senior Tour in August and David signs up in September and they are both relishing the prospect. Paul said “It’ll be weird to go back on the road but I feel like I’m starting over again as a rookie. I’m not naïve enough to think it’ll be easy and there are still

legends out there, like Monty, Woosnam and David, so I’ll need to take my ‘A-game’.”

“That said, I’ve done well in a few overseas Pro-Ams lately and I can still hit it 280 off the peg. I’m looking forward to the longer courses, in particular, for that reason. I expect to be competitive but I know I must be patient.” David added, “Real golfers never quit I’ve kept my eye in with Pro-Ams in Shropshire at Greenway Hall. Touring is great when you’re doing well, but it’s tough when you’re struggling, so I’ll need to knuckle down. There will be a lot of guys I’ll be pleased to catch up with and I always back myself to do well.” Both Paul Broadhurst and David Gilford recently signed with Champions of Golf, the golf management arm of branding and celebrity agency, Champions (UK) plc. They join the likes of two-time Major winner and four-time Ryder Cup captain, Tony Jacklin CBE, former Ryder Cup vice-captain, Peter Baker, Gary Wolstenholme MBE and European Tour rookie, Jason Palmer, on their books. Everyone here at Aspirational Magazine wishes them the very best of luck as they go back into competitive golf on the European Senior Tour.

HOME, HOUSE AND GARDEN

MOVING THIS YEAR?

THE INDUSTRY EXPERTS GIVE US THEIR TOP TIPS If you are thinking of selling your home, there is often plenty of conflicting advice as to what you need to do to sell your property. In order to separate the fact from fiction, we asked James Warne, Residential Director at Bentons to give us the view from the industry’s property experts.

James explained that the housing market is much better than it was during the years immediately after the credit crunch however, it is far from a seller’s market. In order to sell successfully there are many things that you have to consider to make your property stand out from the crowd. These things fall into two categories, the first category is the property and its presentation, the second is the marketing. James went on to explain -

“There are things that you can do to add to the saleability of your property and things that you can do to add value. Some do both and some things do neither. Many years ago people thought that all they had to do is to bake fresh bread in the oven and make some fresh coffee and that would do the trick! Now the property market is a lot more sophisticated. So to start with the basics, the first thing to think about is the “arrival experience” or first impression. In our experience most buyers will often drive out to have a look at where a property is situated and have a look at the property from the roadside. The kerb-side appeal of a property is therefore paramount to convert that initial inspection into a viewing.

74

Bentons DPS SS2015 V2.indd 74

24/04/2015 16:15

In order to sell your home, it needs to convey one simple message to a buyer – that it is loved. If a house looks loved from the roadside this will dramatically increase the number of people wanting to view it. So my advice is to paint the garage door, tidy up the front gardens, jet wash the drive and add a splash of colour. Two tubs either side of the front door perhaps with topiary shrubs will create impact, show the buyer you love your home and you can take them with you when you sell! The next thing I would recommend is paint, paint, paint. Replacing bathrooms and kitchens are expensive and not always to a buyer’s choice but clean, freshly painted walls, skirting boards and windows once again show buyers that you care about your home, that it has been well maintained and loved. The next most important thing is to de-clutter and define the use of every room. Don’t be tempted to use bedrooms as store rooms or combine rooms for different uses, i.e. a gym/study/playroom/ utility room! This will just highlight to buyers that you don’t have enough rooms in your home. Tidying up a garden is essential, even in the winter. Clearing dead leaves, plants, weeding and making a straight edge on a lawn can be so much more appealing to buyers than an unkempt wilderness. Gardens can also be made to look much bigger by removing overgrown shrubs and ageing fruit trees. This can often create a lot more space. It is also essential to jet wash the patio. Many houses have a view but don’t actually make the most of it. If you have a boundary onto open fields, it is a good idea to either cut the edge to a height where people can see the view or create a ‘window’ in the hedge through which people can see the attractive aspect at the rear. Most of my advice revolves around relatively cheap ways of increasing both the saleability and the value of your property. The second and most important element of selling a property however, is the marketing. If your estate agent has walked around your property and taken a few photographs with a digital camera, these photographs are going to be dark with a limited wide angle lens.

Small, built in flash units are just not powerful enough to light rooms properly. At Bentons, we are obsessed with photography, as the online impact of your home is by far the most important element of selling in the current internet age. If you have a special home, it is becoming more important for us to provide professional presenter led videos. For an example, type the following into your browser: http://youtu.be/3LJZKKykZxU The third most important thing is to consider an agent with a strong regional and national marketing capability. There was an article in The Daily Telegraph in January which recommended that anyone selling a property should choose a member of The Guild of Professional Estate Agents. Our membership of The Guild gives us over 700 connected offices and a fabulous office in Park Lane, London. So for example if you go onto the Bentons website, click ‘national property search’ and type in ‘Oxford’, you can find all the properties for sale in Oxford on our website through our Oxford agent. That agent’s clients in Oxford can also do the same to find your property when they are moving up to Leicestershire or Nottinghamshire. It is a brilliant system and it works fantastically well. Other brand new marketing initiatives are also now becoming really useful. We are pioneering drone photography which is a fabulous way of showing your property in context with its views and setting. Many examples of this can be found at www.bentons.co.uk. Advertising your home in all the region’s property newspapers and magazines is still very important to drive traffic to the websites, however, the web marketing is now exceptionally important. Onthemarket.com launched in January and is fast becoming one of the biggest property portals in the country, with thousands of estate agents choosing this new website over rivals such as Zoopla. Bentons have always been at the forefront of marketing initiatives and we are delighted to have joined this new website along with the likes of Savills, Strutt and Parker, Chestertons and Jackson Stop and Staff just to name but a few. It certainly now seems to be the case that to be on the market, your property needs to be on Onthemarket.com!”

For further advice on achieving the best price for your home and taking advantage of all of Bentons unique marketing initiatives, James and his team can be contacted on 01664 563892

Both Ventola Projects and SLM Building Contractors thrive on high quality craftsmanship and deadline delivery. The success of these attributes of both businesses were emphasised in the build of Champions (UK) plc’s new offices. From the first brick laid to a state of the art turnkey office in the space of five months, SLM and Ventola battled the harsh winter conditions and incorporated inevitable design changes to still finish on target. Champions (UK) plc’s offices are a prime example of energy efficiency and build quality, demonstrating SLM and Ventola’s thirst for providing the very best results for their clients. John Hayes, CEO of Champions (UK) plc is hugely impressed with SLM and Ventola’s progress as well as their ability to bring his concept into reality: “Working with Ventola Projects and SLM Building Contractors has been a pleasure. Building our new offices over the winter was always going to be a challenge and I’ve been impressed by Ventola and SLM’s ability to adapt and capitalise on opportunities to progress with the build when they could. The new offices have given us the ability to go forth and expand and should be the perfect home for Champions (UK) plc going forwards. I’d like to thank Mick Ventola of Ventola Projects and Mark Daniels of SLM Building Contractors for their dedication and hard work over the past five months for creating an office of which I am hugely proud.” Another wonderful achievement for SLM Building Contractors and Ventola Projects’ already resoundingly successful working relationship, the two companies are set to continue to more exciting and revolutionary building developments together well into the future.

NEW TO THE AREA Walters Architects have expanded. The practice is adding to existing premises in Charnwood with a newly refurbished office situated in the heart of Leicester. An influx of more commercial clients has resulted in the expansion of the business whilst the practice still remains focused on all types of projects, regardless of size or complexity. Walters Architects will still hold a strong place in their hearts for the smaller and interesting domestic schemes. The practice enjoys the challenges of working with listed buildings and projects within conservation areas. Due to the amount of work undertaken in this area, Walters Architects have become an authority in this sector. The practice principal, Kevin Walters, told Aspirational Magazine, “It has been a happy accident, but most of our work now involves either really modern designs, listed buildings or a combination of the two”.

So happy has the accident been that Walters Architects have recently received a Conservation Award for work undertaken on a converted, listed building in Loughborough. Kevin goes on to say, “The listed building work comes mostly from our other satellite office in Charnwood. There are some lovely properties in the area and we have been fortunate enough to have been involved with many of them over the last eight years. Hopefully, the local conservation areas of Stoneygate and Knighton will be equally as rewarding”. With a clear ethos for contemporary design involving traditional and historical buildings, the move has already proved a success. The practice has been selected as architects for the refurbishment and creation of the new store for Lumbers Jewellers in Leicester. The new store, previously Dominoes Toys, is set in the conservation area of Leicester’s High Street. It will feature luxurious interiors

over two floors, which will include a jewellery wonder room, wedding room, dedicated luxury client area and Champagne reception area, making Lumbers a must-visit for anyone looking for a prestige timepiece or stunning jewellery. Walters Architects have helped realise a design that will reflect the high quality merchandise on offer. Walters Architects perceive Lumbers as the perfect project as it requires many of the skills that they possess in order to complete such a specialised undertaking. The scheme is a commercial project requiring an understanding of historic buildings, conservation work, interior design schemes and some complex construction work. Whilst all company expansions can prove challenging, Aspirational Magazine would like to wish Walters Architects all the very best of luck and look forward to seeing more of their designs in the city, the county and beyond.

To find out more about the practice and what they do for both domestic and commercial clients please either visit their new website at www.waltersarchitects.com, email them at info@waltersarchitects.com or call 0116 254 1830. 82

FINE DINING GUIDE

ASPIRATIONAL

FINE DINING GUIDE Everyone here at Aspirational Magazine not only loves the very best food but also talking about it, so we jumped at the chance recently to chat to food critic and MasterChef host, Gregg Wallace, about what’s tickling his fancy in the East Midlands this summer. Drawing on Gregg’s in-depth knowledge of our region’s finest restaurants, we have lovingly prepared this essential fine dining guide to help you search out the best cuisine to suit your mood as temperatures rise over the coming months. We found that the East Midlands foodie scene is indeed in fine fettle. We start at Gino’s Pear Tree, a chic Italian restaurant housed in an 18th century inn and renowned for their world-class pizza. Moving on to Hotel Maiyango, we sampled some of their seasonal dishes served in relaxed and stylish surroundings. A favourite amongst foodies, 34 Windsor St specialise in fine food in an informal, relaxed atmosphere. We enjoyed some traditional Spanish tapas at the trendy Escabeche in the heart of West Bridgford, before making an obligatory stop at World Service Restaurant, still one of Nottingham’s finest restaurants. There are plenty more superb eateries to discover in the following pages and it’s easy to see why we’re spoilt for choice when it comes to seasonal treats here in the East Midlands. If you’re looking for some summer inspiration of your own, here’s a tempting suggestion from Gregg Wallace himself.

GINO’S PEAR TREE, PIZZERIA, WINE BAR & RESTAURANT Woodhouse Eaves, Leicestershire

Evoking the sprawling plains of Tuscany, Gino’s Pear Tree of Woodhouse Eaves is celebrated for its authentic Italian cuisine and an excellent wine list. The new pizzeria wouldn’t be out of place in the historic narrow streets of Naples and the fabulous new outside seating areas makes the restaurant an even more attractive proposition. The pizzas at Gino’s Pear Tree burst with flavour and Old Country authenticity and the collaboration between expert pizza chef, Davide, and the Albiniano family has produced a selection of pizzas that are the envy of the competition. Davide himself moved to Gino’s with the express intention of giving diners a true taste of the Albiniano’s hometown, Campobasso. New to Gino’s Pear Tree for 2015 is a wonderful outside terrace area, completed just in time for a balmy British summer. Positioned in the far left corner of Gino’s grounds, the terrace enjoys sunshine from 11am to 9pm and is now a favourite spot for guests looking to enjoy the best delicacies on offer at the restaurant. Gino’s has also recently converted its existing patio area into a continental outdoor restaurant. The new space delivers an authentic Mediterranean dining experience, complete with radiant heat to lengthen those summer nights and stave off autumn’s chilly grasp. Gino’s now serves pizzas all day. The oven is fired up between 12pm and 10pm from Tuesday to Saturday and from 4pm to 10pm after their traditional Sunday

lunch service, which offers a 2/3 course choice set menu. Open for lunch and offering an earlier opening time for pizzas, Gino’s is the perfect place for a relaxed meal with friends and family. Gino’s is proud to announce a new ‘Express Lunch’ menu, giving diners the ability to enjoy 2 courses for £12.50, or 3 courses for £15.50 from noon until 2:30pm, Tuesday to Saturday. The restaurant continues to offer a full à la carte menu using fresh produce and the very best ingredients. Served with the very best of true Italian gastronomy, diners find themselves transported to the rolling foothills of the Tuscan countryside. The wine list complements the delicious dishes perfectly, emphasising the importance of seasonal flavour combinations in Italian cuisine. With a beautiful dining room, new al fresco dining areas and a spectacular ambience, Gino’s continues to entice visitors from across the East Midlands and beyond.

HAMBLETON HALL

HOTEL MAIYANGO

THE LIGHTHOUSE

Hambleton, Rutland

City Centre, Leicester

Kibworth, Leicestershire

Head chef, Salvatore Tassari, has created a real buzz of excitement at Maiyango since his arrival. Having spent several years working in prominent restaurants across the world, including time at the 3 Hat Restaurant Ezard in Melbourne, Australia, Tassari has brought flair to the restaurant that has seen diners relish and critics rave.

The Lighthouse at Kibworth Beauchamp is really quite unique; billed as a Seafood Restaurant & More, owners Sarah and Lino have created a thoroughly modern menu, beginning with an exciting selection of tapas-style nibbles, which you are encouraged to enjoy in the truly Tapas way, sharing and enjoying the fabulous variety of flavours, ideally with a glass of something lovely from their “Around The World” wine list.

Celebrate The Occasion... Birthdays, anniversaries and memorable dates are all worth celebrating in style. Stay a night in one of our Superior or Master bedrooms or our Croquet Pavilion suite with stunning views over Rutland Water. This special occasion offer includes:

• • • • • • •

A half bottle of NV René Beaudouin Seasonal fruit Rich chocolate brownies from Hambleton Bakery Bouquet of flowers 6 course gourmet Tasting menu Personalised dinner menu Full Hambleton breakfast and morning paper

For prices & terms & conditions, please view our website: www.hambletonhall.com

Tassari’s menu is packed with flavour and innovative ideas and techniques. It also offers a fantastic selection of dishes for allergy sufferers, vegetarians and vegans, groups often overlooked by restaurants. One of our favourites from Hotel Maiyango’s latest wonderful menu is their steamed wild sea bass, spiced coconut laksa and bok choi with chilli and mint relish. The dish is just one of many offering a fusion of flavours, textures and spices, which Salavtore advocates as being one of the main reasons Maiyango is as popular as it has become.

Turn the page and there is an array of seafood on offer embracing the retro to the modern, the classic European to exotic Eastern flavours; the emphasis on all of these being the freshest ingredients beautifully prepared, alongside a smaller selection of meat and vegetarian dishes. The supper menu is fantastic value at £14.50 for 2 courses, and makes a midweek treat all the more affordable; or take advantage of the “Nibbles and Tipples” offer of a selection of the nibbles and a bottle of house wine for only £25.00, for two.

If desserts are more your thing, how about a more indulgent treat? The dark chocolate mousse is to die for, served with a wellbalanced salted caramel, cardamom ice cream and dried raspberries.

Paella Nights, on the first Thursday of the month, transport you to the wonders of Spain, sharing jugs of Sangria, Tapas, Paella and Crema Catalana, a most excellent way to spend a Thursday evening!

With Hotel Maiyango also offering The Glass Bar and The Gallery for private hire, guests can hold their own exclusive event, complete with a bespoke menu, while reveling in panoramic views across Leicester’s stunning new Jubilee Square.

If you really fancy a treat, push the boat out, and enjoy The Captain’s Table; a long thin tasting menu of tasty morsels, served in tasting sized portions. You set your guidelines and let The Lighthouse staff do the rest, serving you their favourite dishes of the moment, from £37.50 per person, “simply the best way to eat”. A light, fresh and contemporary maritime themed interior provides the ideal background to relax and enjoy your meal whilst the passionate staff share their pride and infectious enthusiasm for the culinary delights they serve. It is little wonder that The Lighthouse received the coveted accolade of Bib Gourmand in the Michelin Guide, and features alongside its sister restaurant, Boboli, in The Good Food Guide. The Lighthouse has proven its credentials as a pre-eminent culinary destination in Leicestershire, delivering consistently good food at affordable prices. Indulge yourself in The Lighthouse experience.

FINE DINING GUIDE

Leicester’s finest boutique hotel and restaurant, Hotel Maiyango has a reputation for sublime cuisine and industry leading luxury accommodation. Taking centre stage in a brand new £4 million development for Leicester, Jubilee Square, Hotel Maiyango now has the setting and backdrop it deserves.

Completed in late 2014, Jubilee Square, named after the Queen’s visit to Leicester during her Diamond Jubilee year, features large lawns and hard landscaping, as well as seating and architectural lighting to show off the best features of the buildings fronting the square. The aim of the square was to create synergy between Leicester’s modern city centre and the city’s historic gems, including Leicester Cathedral and the Guildhall. The final stages to the work at Jubilee Square was the planting of a varied array of large trees, including five freeman maples, standing seven metres high and weighing four tonnes each. With a hardstanding area capable of holding a ferris wheel or ice rink in the winter, the new development has drawn large crowds to the square, with Hotel Maiyango being perfectly placed to welcome in, refresh and accommodate any visitors to the area. The hotel and restaurant benefit from a stunning roof terrace, providing a panoramic vista of the city as well as breath-taking views of Jubilee Square below. After enjoying the view you can retreat back to your room where you will be met with sophisticated, elegant and modern décor consisting of plush fabrics, atmospheric lighting and hugely comfortable furniture. Each of Hotel Maiyango’s fourteen rooms has been thoughtfully designed to give a welcoming air of luxury to any of the hotel’s guests.

Hotel Maiyango’s restaurant has been garnered with an AA Rosette Award for Culinary Excellence, whilst also being recognised by The Good Food Guide. Hotel Maiyango has also recently welcomed Head Chef Salvatore Tassari to their ranks. Salvatore has vast experience as a chef in establishments around the world, including time at 3 Hat Restaurant Ezard, in Melbourne, Australia. Introducing a lighter and fresher menu of dishes, such as King Scallops and Pork Belly, XO Sauce and Red Pepper dressing, Salvatore’s style of cuisine heralds a new era for Maiyango and maintains their position as the premier dining destination in Leicester. Maiyango has also recently made the final of the Taste of England Award, as part of this year’s VisitEngland Awards for Excellence. This national award scheme highlights how highly regarded Hotel Maiyango are for their cuisine and hospitality, emphasised further still by the prestigious establishments they have been selected amongst. As cutting edge as its new surroundings, the restaurant is the ideal destination for a lunch with business colleagues or for a romantic evening with a loved one. Tassari’s careful composition of Maiyango’s menu allows diners to taste the seasonal dishes inspired by the diversity and flair of Leicester’s culture. Maiyango can also accommodate for vegetarians, vegans and allergy sufferers, ensuring, not only carnivores, but everyone can savour their time at Maiyango.

Maiyango’s location on the doorstep of Jubilee Square is remarkably fitting, as during the Queen’s visit to Leicester during her Diamond Jubilee, Hotel Maiyango prepared the exquisite lunch Her Royal Highness enjoyed.

Managing Director of Hotel Maiyango, Aatin Anadkat, is delighted with the new Jubilee Square and is hugely confident about his establishment’s prospects for the future: “There’s a real buzz and energy about what we are doing and now on our doorstep is the fantastic Jubilee Square, which has become a wonderful attraction in the city and is a remarkable transformation from what it used to be. We have enjoyed even greater interest in both the hotel and restaurant as a result of the new development and I can’t wait to see what the future brings. Maiyango is going from strength to strength and I welcome anyone to come and sample the dishes that have received such positive feedback, or alternatively to spend some time in our hotel and experience everything the attractions of Leicester have to offer.”

As anyone familiar with Leicester and Leicestershire knows, the area is one of the most culturally diverse and business friendly environments on the United Kingdom. It is now time we spread the good news with not only the rest of the country but the rest of the world. And this autumn’s inaugural Leicester Business Festival will do just that. With one of the fastest growing economies in the country, three excellent universities producing around 15,000 graduates each year, one of the best performing Enterprise Zones in the country and a long line of local businesses with excellent international reputations, the county has a number of key advantages as we look to the future. The Leicester & Leicestershire Enterprise Partnership (LLEP), a business-led partnership between the public and private sector looking to drive economic growth across the region, are taking a proactive approach to establishing the county as among Europe’s premier, forward-looking business environments. They have elected to inaugurate the first Leicester Business Festival (LBF) to take place this autumn. Running over a two week period between Monday 26th October and Friday 6th November 2015, the project will have an enormous impact for Leicestershire, radically raising the county’s profile at both the national and international level

as the economy strengthens. The Festival will feature as many as 60 different business events, ranging from business summits, seminars and trade shows to conferences, exhibitions, awards ceremonies, workshops and more. The LBF will serve to showcase and promote the wide range of businesses and industries that make up the vibrant business community of Leicestershire. The county itself will be promoted as a great place to do business, a centre of academic and innovation excellence, a thriving hub of rural enterprise and as one of the best connected areas in the UK.

Corin Crane, Chief Executive of LLEP, said of his hopes for the project, “We want a festival of business, with events run by businesses for businesses. This is not going to be about politicians or public sector workers but for people to do business and agencies to come in and talk about trade.” “There will be dozens of different events, on different scales, and it will be across the county, not just in the city – for instance, there could be something in Melton looking at food and farming. I was blown away by the enthusiasm for the Liverpool festival, but thought we could do it even better.”

Partnership Opportunities With packages starting from just £5,000, this is a great chance to link your brand with all that’s best about Leicestershire.

LLEP have chosen Leicestershire’s leading branding and events agency, Champions (UK) plc, to co-ordinate and promote the LBF. The agency will develop the LBF brand from concept, devising a wide range of brand infrastructure and collateral, including a state of the art website that will act as an organisational hub for the many types of businesses and organisations looking to throw their weight behind the county by getting involved in the project. This strong web presence will allow the LBF to reach out to global audiences, streaming coverage of many of the events worldwide. Champions (UK) plc have built a formidable reputation as one the country’s most innovative public relations agencies and they will lend their knowledge and expertise to the LBF, devising a number of eye-catching communications campaigns aimed at creating a real buzz around the Festival. They have also established serious credentials in the world of events management, not least with their co-ordination of a number of high profile, regional sports and business awards, including the successful, annual Leicester Mercury Business Awards, so they are an ideal fit for taking a holistic approach to the LBF and its promotion and organisation. The Leicester Business Festival will deliver a series of exciting opportunities for partner companies and organisations to associate their brands with a broad set of high profile business events. An official launch event for the Leicester Business Festival is planned to take place at Curve theatre in late May or early June, giving key stakeholders the opportunity to publicise a series of events that look set to establish Leicestershire as one of this country’s most dynamic regions.

For more information on how your company can get involved with the Leicester Business Festival and help put the region on the map, call Sophia Hayes at Champions (UK) plc on 08453 31 30 31 or email shayes@championsukplc.com

BUSINESS AND FINANCE

An innovative and proactive firm, Champions (UK) plc have diversified further to establish themselves as key players in the Music and Entertainment industry in the UK. The new department, named Champions Music+Entertainment, is a logical development from the already thriving after dinner speaker department that sits alongside Champions Celebrity; Champions (UK) plc’s very own celebrity agency.

The after dinner speaker department, Champions Speakers, books over 500 famous faces, sports stars and celebrities a year, including the likes of Michael McIntyre, Andrew Neil, Derek Redmond and Michael Portillo. The department’s large reach led to Champions (UK) plc being appointed exclusive entertainment, strategy and delivery partners of Grosvenor Casinos at the start of 2015. The partnership has already seen Champions (UK) plc become one of the most prominent booking agents for intermediate level music acts in the nation, and this newfound presence has allowed Champions (UK) plc to work from a reputable position from the outset of its expansion as Champions Music+Entertainment.

The decision to further establish Champions (UK) plc in the music and entertainment industry has also had the benefit of President of the Agents Association of Great Britain, Alan Warner FEAA, joining their ranks on a three-year contract. Champions (UK) plc acquired Alan’s business, Warner Music & Entertainments (UK), in June 2014. After a meeting between Alan Warner and Champions (UK) plc CEO, John Hayes, the opportunity was presented to purchase the firm. Alan and John have enjoyed a friendship spanning decades and both parties knew it was not an opportunity to be missed.

Champions (UK) plc have enjoyed a history of nurturing success within the music industry, namely signing X Factor star Andy Abraham and embarking on the release of albums and the organisation of a sell out national tour. Andy’s initial success with Champions (UK) plc continued too, experiencing huge demand for him to perform in the UK and overseas ever since.

Alan Warner’s decades of experience within the industry combined with Warner Music and Entertainments (UK)’s reach has been a huge contribution to Champions (UK) plc’s resounding success already in the Music and Entertainment industry.

“Establishing ourselves in the music industry as Champions Music+Entertainment heralds a new era for Champions (UK) plc. The music industry is a thriving and incredibly diverse and creative industry to work in. Matthew Hayes, Managing Director.

On 26th March 2015, Champions Music+Entertainment took another huge leap forward in the music industry by exclusively signing 2013 X Factor winner Sam Bailey. Sam is one of the most successful X Factor winners in history; with her winner’s single Skyscraper becoming Christmas No.1, as well as her debut album, The Power of Love, achieving BPI Gold status, selling well over 200,000 copies. Champions Music+Entertainment also has the online presence to match its reach within the industry. The new website plays host to an incredible database of over 1000 acts ranging from solo artists to wedding bands and full size choirs. This not only provides end users with the most comprehensive choice of acts and performers for their event, but also emphasises how thorough and all encompassing Champions (UK) plc are in their approach. Matthew Hayes, Managing Director of Champions (UK) plc, is excited about the prospect of this new venture, however understands the importance of being a face in the music industry clients can trust: “Our experience within the industry has paid dividends and has allowed us to provide a message to high profile acts and clients that we are an agency that you can count on to provide first class service.

Bringing Alan Warner in has given us the grounding to appeal to a wide range of acts looking for representation with an agency that drives a results focussed strategy. Our staff are as motivated to book acts as the acts are to perform and this harmonious approach is what sets us apart. Champions Music+Entertainment complements Champions (UK) plc’s other departments perfectly and I’m confident in our staff’s ability to offer the music acts of the UK and further afield an alternative to conventional individual marketing and both online and offline act directories.”

Skyscraper Rising Like a

Singing superstar Sam Bailey stole the hearts of the nation after winning the tenth series of The X Factor in Christmas 2013, dazzling audiences and judges alike with her stunning voice and natural stage presence. Sam has now embarked on the next stage of her career by signing with leading celebrity management agency, Champions (UK) plc. Prior to her X Factor triumph, Sam worked as a prison officer at HM Prison Gartree as well as performing on cruise ships, in clubs and at music festivals for several years. Despite her obvious nervousness during her first audition, she blew the judges away with her rendition of Beyoncé’s Listen, receiving a standing ovation and leading Gary Barlow to describe her voice as “incredible”.

Aspirational Magazine spoke to Sam about her experience on The X Factor, what life has been like since, and what the future holds for the singing sensation.

“It’s been a bit of a whirlwind since winning The X Factor and I’ve got so many highlights. Opening the National Television Awards with Michael Bolton, who’s become a good friend of mine, was a fantastic experience. Obviously, the moment I realised I was Christmas number one was incredible. Then there was the number one album, and of course, having the opportunity to support Beyoncé on tour.

right. I also went forward for Britain’s Got Talent, with the same result and decided to not go for these types of shows again.

“I changed my mind when I was on the social clubs circuit and saw so many posters that said ‘as seen on The X Factor’. At the time, I was often earning only around £90 for two hours singing, so I thought that featuring on The X Factor would be a good way of making a bit more money, as long as I made it onto the telly. I never in a million years thought I would win! “The main thing I wanted out of the show was to be able to provide a better life for my family. Being on the show was fantastic, but it was also an intense experience and it was really, really tough on my marriage. After the show ended, we vowed that nothing would ever break us up. “I don’t think that fame has changed me but I like being able to help out my friends and family wherever I can. I still live in the same house as my kids were happy where they were and wanted to continue going to the same school. I am having an extension on it though, which is really all I wanted!

Under the mentorship of Sharon Osborne she became a clear favourite on the show and received more than a million votes over the course of the final weekend. Following her win, her debut single, Skyscraper, reached Christmas number one and her debut album, The Power of Love stormed to the top of the UK album charts. Sam is truly one of the most talented performers in the music business and embarked on her first ever headline tour in 2015 which sold-out venues and received rave reviews.

“I can’t say I was one of those people whose only dream was to become a singer, but I used to sing all the time when I was younger. I entered talent competitions and always wanted to impress people by myself, rather than being talked up by my friends and family. My Granddad was a singer in a group called ‘The Four Vinos’ – I’ve still got a poster of him back from when he was paid £6 to do a gig! My Dad was also a big inspiration. He was in a band so we had musicians round the house all the time. I really do feel like I’m living out his dreams sometimes meeting so many of his heroes.

“I’ve known about Champions (UK) plc for many years – I like that it’s a family-run business that is expanding so quickly. There’s a real feeling of organisation and that everyone has an important role in the business. The head office is in Leicestershire where I live which means they’ll be seeing plenty of me! “I know that fame can come and go so quickly, but I am positive about the road I am heading down and looking forward to exploring a variety of new opportunities.”

“I first auditioned for The X Factor in 2007 and I turned up in my Leicester City tracksuit. I think I was trying to prove a point that winning the show was about the look as well as the voice. I didn’t get through and I took this as proof that I was

OUR OFFICE EXPANSION EMULATES THE GROWTH OF CHAMPIONS (UK) PLC AS A BRAND AGENCY AND OUR ADDED CAPACITY WILL ALLOW US TO MARKET BOTH OUR PRESENT AND FUTURE CLIENTS’ BRANDS EVEN FURTHER TO PROVIDE THE ROI THAT A STRONG BRAND PRESENCE DESERVES... Champions (UK)plc Managing Director, Matthew Hayes

Champions (UK) plc’s ever growing portfolio of clients is testament to a results driven strategy, focusing on tangible ROI, which has driven widespread brand awareness and loyalty within a plethora of relevant markets. The months leading up to and after the New Year have been as successful and impressive as ever for the firm, with expansion of departments to meet the demand of clients who are either retained or new to the firm. Bolstered by the renascent British economy, Champions (UK) plc have applied their expertise in PR, Marketing, Creative, Events and Celebrity Management to a number of large clients, including Grosvenor Casinos, delivering an industry leading holistic package of services to businesses effectively and efficiently by an expert team. The partnership with Grosvenor Casinos has seen Champions (UK) plc provide an extensive marketing and communications package to support the group’s entertainment activity. The partnership has resulted in Grosvenor Casinos becoming synonymous with fantastic music and entertainment, as well as becoming an industry leader for casino hospitality. Champions (UK) plc moved into the first incarnation of their offices in September 2009 and will be forever thankful for the meticulous approach of those involved in the initial build. From design concept to final sign-off, Paul Thurlby of Gordon White & Hood Architects ensured that the building lived up to the prerequisites of a rapidly expanding company. Appreciation is also due to Neil Footitt of Moore Construction, whose management of the office build six years ago guaranteed an excellent home for Champions (UK) plc that has stood the test of increasing staff to well over double the number who initially moved in. Champions (UK) plc’s new office project has been supported by the Government’s Regional Growth Fund through D2N2 Local Enterprise Partnership, and the European Commission’s Regional Development Fund. The Regional Growth Fund supports eligible projects and programmes that raise private sector investment creating economic growth and lasting employment. Since launch in 2010, the Regional Growth Fund has invested £2.85 billion and is set to create over half a million jobs by the mid-2020s. Champions (UK) plc recommissioned Paul Thurlby of Gordon White & Hood for the new extension and brought onboard SLM Builders and Ventola Projects in late 2014. The construction of the offices has been a resounding success and staff moved into the new premises just five months after the build started, with the fit and finish of the build representative of both SLM and Ventola’s incredibly high standards.

Champions (UK) plc go the extra mile to provide their staff with a working environment that will boost employee satisfaction and wellbeing. Best shown by the investment into a new gym to replace the current facilities, Champions (UK) plc offices provide the rostrum for their staff to live a healthier and more productive lifestyle both in and out of the offices. Champions (UK) plc Managing Director, Matthew Hayes, is overjoyed with the progress of the new office extension and the opportunity to further the firm’s reach off the back of its expansion: “SLM Builders and Ventola Projects have to be congratulated for keeping to schedule and battling the harsh winter weather, short days and unforeseen issues associated with any build of this scale. Our office expansion emulates the growth of Champions (UK) plc as a brand agency and our added capacity will allow us to market both our present and future clients’ brands even further to provide the ROI that a strong brand presence deserves. Brand marketing should be seen just like any investment a firm decides upon and needs to be accountable in order to deliver real results. We provide our clients with successful growth strategies based upon their expectations, needs and goals, meaning our tailored approach is why our clients enjoy a continued boost in sales, exposure and market share.” 2015 is set to be another record breaker for Champions (UK) plc, continuing the steep and relentless growth curve that has seen the company recognised in national award ceremonies by the likes of Santander, Virgin and the London Stock Exchange to name but a few. Champions (UK) plc have also branched out into the Music and Entertainment industry in conjunction with the acquisition of Warner Music & Entertainment in 2014. The draw that Champions (UK) plc now has in the music industry is clearly apparent, with 2013 X Factor winner Sam Bailey signing exclusively with the firm on the 26th March. Sam has become part of the Champions family and both parties are hugely excited for what the future holds. Champions (UK) plc’s future gets brighter by the day and with the addition of a new building, extended workforce and the diversification of the firm into new marketplaces, this trend looks to continue far into the future. Champions (UK) plc’s unquenchable thirst for return on investment for both its clients and internally has become the lifeblood of the business and ensures that they will remain one of the most creatively diverse and effective brand agencies in the country.

The new extension to the offices has exactly doubled the size of the existing building. Featuring state of the art meeting facilities, a custom studio for the Creative department featuring their very own photography room and three extensive offices that will house new staff to fill the vacancies within Champions (UK) plc thriving five departments.

INTELLIGENT FINANCIAL MEDIATION ON DIVORCE – THE RIGHT WAY TO SETTLE FOR DIVORCING COUPLES!

Divorce is probably one of the most traumatic times that anyone may have to face. It is a ‘living bereavement’. On top of the emotional impact of divorce and the need to protect the children from the adult issues, a husband and wife are facing the uncertainty of how their financial future will be after divorce. Will the family home be sold or kept? How will the children’s educational costs be paid for post-divorce? Are pensions going to be shared? Will the larger earner have to pay spousal maintenance to the lower earner and if so, how much and for how long is fair? These are questions laden with anxiety for the husband and the wife. It can really help couples to feel in control of their own destinies. Financial mediation on divorce can help couples work out their own solutions to what is a fair settlement. It is the smarter, more intelligent way to resolve differences. It is also a cheaper and less time consuming process compared to Solicitor led negotiations or Court proceedings. Glynis Wright & Co are specialists in financial mediation. The practice has two qualified lawyer/mediators. Glynis is the Head of Practice and is a qualified lawyer/mediator through Resolution. Sushma is an Associate Family Lawyer in the practice and is a qualified lawyer/mediator through the Family Mediation Council.

Sushma Kotecha Associate Family Solicitor

Both seek to work with couples in mediation who want to work out their own financial settlements and also any disputes that may have arisen as a result of the separation over the children and their future care arrangements. Both Sushma and Glynis work with accountants, financial advisors, and pension specialists whose expertise may be brought into the mediation process for the joint benefit of the husband and wife to help with aspects of the negotiation in mediation. Sometimes the trauma of the separation and divorce impacts on the family dynamic as a whole and can affect the children. Glynis and Sushma also work with family therapists/ counsellors who can support the family whilst the mediation process is ongoing to assist with the emotional aspects of the case that mediation is not able to address. Mediation is flexible and can be tailored to each case and what is important to the clients. Sometimes, the issues that need to be resolved only take one session. More commonly, it will involve between five and seven sessions depending on the number of issues and whether the financial landscape of the marriage is complex. It is a confidential process, allowing both parties to have open and frank discussions with each other, without fear that they will be bound by the solutions that either may propose before the point where full agreement is reached. The advantage of using Glynis Wright & Co for family mediation is that Glynis and Sushma bring to the table their many years of experience and knowledge as specialist family lawyers as well as their skills as mediators.

Take a leap of faith and use intelligent financial mediation as your tool for brokering your own solutions to the divorce settlement.

The practice is also proud to announce that its expertise and professionalism as a specialist family law and mediation practice has led to the practice being shortlisted for Law Firm of the Year 2015 in the Leicestershire Law Society awards. Glynis, the Head of Practice, has also been shortlisted for the national award of Lawyer of the Year 2015 by Modern Claims. We pride ourselves on the level of expertise we offer to our clients whether as family lawyers or as financial mediators.

For further information regarding mediation call Glynis or Sushma on 0116 238 5680 and we will be delighted to give you more information about what is involved. If you have a family lawyer already, you can ask your lawyer to request and submit a referral form to Glynis Wright & Co on your behalf. I READ IN THE PRESS… By Murray Smith, Director (Wealth Management) The start to 2015 and the road to ‘pensions freedom’ has been an interesting journey. The news headlines over the forthcoming freedoms went from ‘Freedom and choice could be the undoing of the pensions industry’, and ‘7% plan to ‘take the money and run’, to my personal favourite - ‘Uncertainty reigns over ‘zombie’ pension freedoms’. Whilst this made me smile it did cover the serious issue of some older legacydefined pension contracts not being altered to enable access to the new pensions freedom. We should never believe everything we read in the press, and many of my clients contacted me, with confusion or bemusement, over certain advertised freedoms that were already readily available to them under their existing SIPP or SSAS. However, the extension of flexibility to defined

contributions funds and the changes to the death benefit rules are real positive steps for pension fund holders, their families and other beneficiaries. These changes will encourage greater long-term saving, particularly as the use of income drawdown, as opposed to the annuity route, will become more commonplace. I believe that the changes, in place from April 2015, will create a need for new thinking. The dynamic of how individuals structure their income in retirement and how they protect pension assets to be paid tax-efficiently on death will need to change, and the focus on the interaction of personal and pension assets will sharpen. We have advocated the personal ownership of pensions, and the ability to move them from one generation to the next, for a long time now. The opportunities

114

for pension scheme members will be significant and it is clear that sound advice, as well as considered product selection, will be key. ‘Pension scammers target savers following Budget bombshell’ was a concerning headline, and we will continue to work with our clients and the industry to ensure that both pension liberation and accessing pension funds without appropriate advice becomes a thing of the past. The Pensions Regulator has confirmed that there are now more active members in defined contribution schemes than in defined benefits schemes. Some of these clients will grow up in a pensions world where flexibility is the norm, but as one publication declared ‘Will drawdown really catch on in workplace schemes?’ In a structured way, I hope so, and ourBENEFITS WEALTH MANAGEMENT & EMPLOYEE employee benefits teams are already working with clients on innovations that will help create a balanced approach to the new freedoms. On a lighter note, pensions freedom was not the only thing to have dominated the press in the first quarter of this year. Clients over state pension age proved that they were astute savers and internet savvy in January, when up to £10bn worth of NS&I pensioner bonds were made available. Proving that the internet is not only a place for the young, the over 65’s crashed the NS&I website, with one publication comparing it to the internet frenzy that occurs when tickets for Glastonbury go on sale... or so I read in the press!

“My life’s vision is huge; I want to make a difference to thousands of companies by helping them get to grips with their finances”

MAKE SURE YOUR GROWTH IS ALL FIGURED OUT Technology does an increasingly good job of providing businesses with raw financial data but, as founder and Managing Director of The F Word Ltd, Serena Humphrey explains, the key to unlocking sustainable growth lies in how we interpret that data. It is clear that the East Midlands economy is back on the up and many, many businesses are reporting both increased sales and growing turnover. Access to the finance that businesses often need to help them expand, while perhaps not as easy as in the pre-crash days, has loosened somewhat – but it is by no means a magic bullet for good quality growth. From my twenty years studying business expansion, and indeed contraction, I’d argue that having a proper handle on cashflow plays a significant role in ensuring the growth of your company doesn’t mask underlying and potentially dangerous problems. Recent figures from RBS and NatWest indicate that one in four small businesses say they’ve missed out on a growth opportunity because of cashflow and that the same proportion admit they’d turned down a highvolume order due to a lack of available capital. Yet when 41% of UK businesses have never run a cashflow forecast, despite over half expressing concern over cashflow issues, it suggests a worrying disconnect. It’s quite common for a company’s turnover to grow but for its profits to fall, and for cashflow to get tighter and tighter. Unless you’re right on top of the numbers this can go on unnoticed until one day you find you’re in danger of running out of money. If your company is growing quickly, it’s easy to occupy yourself with the task of winning new business and dealing with all the immediate issues growth throws at you. At the same time, though, it’s sometimes equally easy to lose sight of whether you’re actually heading in the right direction. One of the keys to achieving sustainable growth is ensuring you maintain your gross margin. Margin usually falls when turnover grows quickly but there aren’t many prizes for having the least profitable customers just so you can see turnover going up – remember that turnover truly is just vanity.

It’s the quality of that turnover that really counts! There’s a simple way to make sure you’re not a busy fool and that all your hard work doesn’t go to waste – just make sure you’ve got brilliant financial management information that tells you exactly what’s going on, every month.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW • You need to see your profit and loss each month; what were sales, gross margins, overheads and how much actual bottom line profit did you make? • Closely monitor and control your gross margins, make sure your sales team fully understand the impact of giving discounts or buying business. • How much profit does each of your customers make? • What profit are you forecasting to make this year – is it more than last year’s profit? • Are your overheads under control or are they growing more quickly than your profits? •

Make sure you have a rolling 13 week cashflow forecast so you can see pinch points coming in plenty of time. And most important of all, set aside time on a regular basis to look at your information, pause, and make sure you’re all on the right track.

The same study from RBS and NatWest, while highlighting poor cashflow management as a brake on company growth, also revealed a lack of confidence in available support networks. Around a quarter of small firms felt that there was nobody they could turn to for support and the vast majority, a remarkable 78%, felt that the government was not doing enough to assist small firms in accessing the right kind of help. That help is out there and for the last 14 years I’ve made it my mission, and even my obsession, to provide it. I want to help business owners understand their finances more easily, ensuring they have accurate, up to date financial information that tells them everything they need to know about their business. Understanding where your business is right now is important but what you really need to figure out is where it’s heading. You need that information delivered in a format you can easily understand and digest and you need it in a way that relates directly to your business, not in a dry and impenetrable format that’s not much help to anyone. If finance is your F Word and you recognise a gap in understanding within your business, I can help you shed light on the dynamics that will determine its future. On top of that, I’ll also show you the levers you can pull to achieve significantly different outcomes.

DO BUSINESSES STILL NEED SPECIALIST SOLICITORS? Owners of businesses are increasingly striving to cut costs and save money on professional services. We are living in an age where it’s possible to find almost anything on the internet – including things like online dating, which promise to facilitate lasting relationships. With this in mind, it’s not surprising that businesses are now even taking legal matters into their own hands rather than invest in a partnership with a lawyer; but is it worth it in the long run? The Caravan Company is a longstanding client of Bray & Bray and has branches based in Northampton, Reading and Dorset and since its inception in 1993, is still continuing to grow at an impressive rate. With a turnover of £13million annually, it is the largest retailer of second hand caravans in the country. Moreover, within the next 12 months, there are plans to build a further 8,000 square foot building at the company’s premises in Northampton as well as to expand back into Leicester by purchasing new premises there. Here, The Caravan Company’s owner Andrew Scott, speaks about how important it is to have a trusted legal advisor when running and growing a business:

I was due to start setting up at the NEC on the Friday morning and everything was prepared. I had about 8 different models to show, which were ready in a yard in Coventry; the stand was coming down from Leeds and other things were due to arrive from the south coast.

Throughout his working life, my father had used one set of local solicitors and when I joined the family business in 1978 and needed to use a solicitor for things like buying a house, I asked whether I could use the same ones. My father told me no, it wasn’t a good idea and that I needed my own trusted legal advisor who was of a similar age to me.

“Whether it was buying and selling businesses, employee affairs, commercial property, corporate debt collection, buying houses or dealing with tenants of my commercial properties or rental properties – I have used Bray & Bray for all of them. In fact, I think there’s still a rolled up sleeping bag kept there for me from the times I’ve slept over!

My father’s solicitor back then was Ken Bowder, who at one point was also the Lord Mayor of Leicester. Although from a different law firm, Ken suggested that I contact a solicitor who he described as young, up and coming and as having potential. The young ‘whipper-snapper’ Ken was talking about was Tim Gladdle and so I ended up with Bray & Bray.

When asked to give an example of a situation where he had received excellent service from his trusted legal advisor, Andrew said: “Probably most interesting was when I had bought the entire stock of a caravan manufacturer from a receiver, during the first week of October in 2008. In order to sell all of these, I had arranged to exhibit at The National Caravan Exhibition at the NEC, which was due to take place soon after then, during the third week of October.

On the Thursday evening, the night before the exhibition, I was getting ready for bed and checked my phone which was on the bedside table. I saw that I had a missed call and listened to a message from the exhibition organisers saying that they wouldn’t let me in to the exhibition. This was despite the fact that I had signed a contract and paid for my stand in full. Obviously, this had potential to be disastrous for my business – I had a multi-million pound deal relying on the exhibition to sell my caravans.

My stand was already booked, but when certain other dealers and manufacturers found out about my plans they weren’t happy as I would be able to sell my caravans very cheaply because I had bought them at a very good price.

That night, I hardly got any sleep and early in the morning I spoke to my wife, who said you need to go and see Tim. So, early on the Thursday morning I arrived at Bray & Bray’s head office in Leicester before Tim had even got there. As soon as he arrived, Tim

As Tim grew up through the ranks, I understood that I needed people with different areas of expertise for different legal matters. Over the years, I’ve continued to call Tim to explain what I needed at different times and he then always refers me to the best person to deal with my situation.

That day, I didn’t actually leave the board room until 6pm. In that time, Tim Bennett head of the Litigation Department looked at the case and involved other members of his team, then engaged a barrister down in London. My case was heard at The Royal Courts on The Strand by the middle of the same afternoon and by 6pm, I had a High Court injunction against the organisers requiring them to allow me to exhibit immediately, which of course I did. I was able to go to the exhibition and in 6 days I sold 136 caravans, including every caravan I had bought just 2 weeks ago, during the first week of October. All of these were serviced, PDI-checked, fully paid for and delivered to customers by 30th November. It all took less than 8 weeks from start to finish, but it wouldn’t have been possible without the exhibition and the help from Bray & Bray.

Having experienced using one solicitors’ firm for all of his legal affairs, Andrew summarises the importance of having a real, trusted legal advisor 37 years after appointing Tim Gladdle as his, by saying:

“You can’t run a business in any city without a trusted legal advisor.” As one of Leicester’s longest established law firms, Bray & Bray has been providing high quality legal services to both businesses and individuals, since 1893. Senior Partner and head of the corporate law team, Tim Gladdle has been with Bray & Bray since 1981 and is based at the firm’s head office on the outskirts of Leicester’s cultural quarter. Bray & Bray also has a second office in the city, as well as offices in Market Harborough and Hinckley. Commenting on the wealth of experience that Bray & Bray possesses, Tim says: “We’re extremely proud of the services we provide at Bray & Bray – I came to this firm straight out of law school, as did many of my Partners and we have a great raft of experience here as well as exceptionally talented younger members of the team. We each specialise in different areas of law and feel it is vital to understand a variety of different industries to offer the best advice possible. We always go the extra mile for our clients and we are always on hand, to be on their side.”

PLACING YOUR BRAND IN THE HEART OF THE COMMUNITY WITH FIVE TALENTED AND EXPERIENCED IN-HOUSE DEPARTMENTS CHAMPIONS (UK) PLC HAS MADE A GREAT START TO 2015 – AND NOW THE LEADING BRAND AGENCY HAS BEEN APPOINTED TO SECURE A NAMING RIGHTS PARTNER FOR LEICESTER RIDERS’ BRAND NEW CITY CENTRE ARENA.

Champions (UK) plc has established itself as one of Britain’s leading brand agencies in recent years and enjoyed incredible growth as a result of the impact and awareness it has generated for a series of now high profile, national and international brands. Now the company is breaking new ground with the announcement it has been appointed by Leicester Community Sports Arena Ltd to secure a stadium naming rights partner for a brand new 2,400 seat arena currently being constructed in Leicester city centre. The Arena’s backers were drawn to Champions (UK) plc by their successful track record of launching and promoting brands and their proven ability to secure brand associations benefiting all parties. The new, state-of-the-art £4.5 million multi-purpose sports arena on Charter Street is the fruit of a joint venture between Leicester Riders, Leicester City Council and Leicester College. It will be the new home of the Leicester Riders and Leicester Cobras Wheelchair Basketball teams, a regional basketball centre of excellence and serve as a large multi-use sports venue for the College and the local community. There will also be great scope to develop a number of corporate hospitality openings as the Arena is set to be the largest indoor space in the county. All the way back in 1926, William Wrigley, chewing gum entrepreneur and owner of the Chicago Cubs, decided to name the team’s park Wrigley Field. As a consequence, the Wrigley brand, the Cubs and the stadium itself are inextricably linked to this day and other stadia have looked at their example and followed suit. In recent times we have seen a rapid global increase in the number of brands negotiating the exclusive right to name sports stadia and entertainment arenas and, when we examine their logic, the reasons are simple. Proactive companies greatly increase their brand awareness, often in a very short period of time, and create tangible long-term benefits.

A WHOLE NEW BALL GAME

By purchasing stadium naming rights, companies are able to apply their branding to the stadium in question and a number of premium advertising assets, giving them great exposure among spectators and other users of the stadium. Perhaps even more significantly, though, the named brand is referred to innumerable times on television and radio and in the press as sports reporting now represents a large proportion of all created news content. In turn, the brand becomes recognised far more widely and is associated with many of the positive aspects of sport. Furthermore the brand becomes synonymous with the club concerned and, thanks to the unique emotional draw inherent to sport, begins to become part of the local and regional social fabric. Companies are also able to demonstrate a clear commitment to and engagement with the community, boosting their corporate social responsibility credentials. Sporting events and teams certainly breed emotion, particularly at the local and regional level. As a result, it has been demonstrated many, many times that the public will not only align itself with a team but also with a venue and its sponsor. As a flagship element of the ongoing and extensive regeneration of Leicester city centre and as the venue welcoming Leicester Riders back from their exile at Loughborough University, the Arena will be subject to enormous media and public attention when it is first opened later this year. The brand that takes advantage of this rare and exciting opportunity will not only benefit greatly from this exposure but also create valuable corporate responsibility capital among Leicester Riders fans, users of the College facility and the wider city, county and East Midlands communities. As part of their ongoing growth in new and existing fields, Champions (UK) plc are set to announce further high profile stadium naming rights opportunities in the near future, so make sure your brand doesn’t miss out.

For more information on the opportunity in central Leicester and on other sponsorship possibilities with both the Arena and Leicester Riders, please call Sophia Hayes on 08453 31 30 31 or email shayes@championsukplc.com

Rainbows cares for more and more children and young people with cancer

''Losing a child is like losing your soul. You will put on a brave front for the world but inside you are actually dying.'' When she was just five years old, Zainab Shiyam was diagnosed with T-cell lymphoma. Her parents Fazmiya and Shiyam Juffer said that was when their world ended.

“We battled through the months trying to remain positive, watching her struggle and suffer through pain and anguish each day,” said Fazmiya. Zainab’s cancer was detected fairly quickly after she began suffering from back pain in August 2010. She underwent a course of chemotherapy and to the family’s delight, she was given the all clear. Sadly just over a year later, the cancer was back. Zainab endured a bone marrow transplant, which extended her life expectancy but it robbed the once cheeky and active little girl of her speech and movement.

In October 2012, Zainab had reached the last stage of her battle and was referred to Rainbows, which is striving to expand the specialist care it provides to children and young people with cancer. “We always knew that there were a group of children out there who had cancer and had a poor prognosis but their families didn’t seem to know about Rainbows,” said Lynne de Melo, clinical nurse specialist in palliative care at Rainbows. From 2000 to 2010, Rainbows treated one or two children with cancer each year as families seemed unaware the charity was there as support. But Rainbows wanted to do more so, taking a further proactive

approach to reach these children, Rainbows, invited various healthcare professionals to an open evening and a tour of the hospice – the move met with a great response.

Rainbows youngsters meet the PM

In 2010, Rainbows was awarded a £25,000 grant from the Burdett Trust, through Help the Hospices (now Hospice UK), to widen access to the hospice for children and young people with cancer and their families and to develop Lynne’s leadership skills.

Ten lucky families who benefit from the care and support of Rainbows were chosen at rando m to attend the Prime Minister’s Christ mas Party at Number 10 Downing Str eet. The children, young pe ople and their families met David Ca meron and his wife Samantha, childr en’s entertainers Dick and Dom, some of the cast of Paddington along with Paddington Bear himself and Santa Claus at a magical reception where they were greeted at the famous door by reindeer.

With its expert medical and nursing care and dedicated care team, along with the family support team Rainbows provides short breaks, symptom control, palliative care and end of life care for children and young people with cancer. Staff are also available at the end of the phone for support and advice round the clock. “One of Rainbows’ strengths is that we are able to work flexibly with families. When children and young people have cancer, in the end stage of their illness they can deteriorate fairly rapidly and we do our best to ensure they live their lives fully until they die,” added Lynne. For Zainab’s family, Rainbows was a great comfort at a time of incredible sadness. “No words could ever reflect what we felt each day watching Zainab struggle through her pain,” said Shiyam. “Rainbows stepped in to offer care and support, not only for Zainab, but for our whole family. They took care of our other three children so that my wife and I had time to spend with Zainab. We were given accommodation and all our needs were taken care of.”

New shops for R

Rainbows has opened two NEW shops. In August, snooker legend and Rainbows Patron Willie Thorne opened a shop in Market Harborough. And in December, the premises in Beeston were opened by Broxtowe Deputy Mayor Susan Bagshaw. Karen Bilsby, head of retail at Rainbows, said: “Hundreds of shoppers turned out to the opening of both stores and the support we received in both communities was overwhelming. We are delighted to represent Rainbows in the areas and we hope that people will continue to come through our doors in the future.”

Champions (UK) plc are delighted to raise funds for Rainbows wherever they can, particularly at various events over the course of the year. As well as local sports and business awards, they host special fundraising events to benefit Rainbows, which is so close to the hearts of everyone at Champions (UK) plc. The last major event held was the Champions Annual Charity Ball, which had the theme of ‘A Night in the Caribbean’ – a great way to combat the winter blues! This is the 14th year running that Champions (UK) plc have hosted this event. Champions (UK) plc raised over £150k for Rainbows last year. Thank you to all the staff and to everyone who attended their events.
