AUTUMN/WINTER 2018

GIGI HADID

Dominic Gomersall It seems quite extraordinary that it is time to write my column for Aspirational Magazine again. It seems to come round so frequently, although there are only two editions a year! So, this year, what have we done to make us feel proud? Firstly, I must touch on a day earlier in the summer that would have made my father extremely proud. We had five members of the Gomersall family working within Lumbers. Kim and I were joined by our son, Freddie, who was helping to maintain the window displays, Maddie, my step-daughter doing our latest advertising campaign and my younger brother, Justin. ‘J’ has been assisting us over the last six months within the sales team. He has fitted in seamlessly adding fun banter with staff and clients alike. I am really enjoying the working relationship that we have. I am sure that if you have been in during this period, you will have heard J and met him – he is a very gregarious character and has revelled within the responsibility we have offered. I do hope that this period has been rewarding for him as we await his next step. This nicely brings me on to the topic of Leicester family businesses, with the sad demise of like-minded competition within the city. Historically, Leicester boasted many local family owned premium jewellery businesses. The recent demise of George Tarratt has seen this historic name joining the list of lost jewellery names from the city to name a few, Pearce and Sons, Kemps, Cockertons and Denhams. It leaves Lumbers as the last local man standing, dating back to the last century – and the century preceding that! I really believe that Leicestershire businesses must work together. We must rotate business between one another to ensure the health and vibrancy of our local economy. This can only be achieved by local run family businesses rather than nationally owned multiple businesses that dabble within the local community rather than living within it and contributing to improve the local region as much as their own interests. I am delighted that we have been recognised for our success as, yet again, we have won national recognition with the Retail Jewellers’ Retailer of the Year Award, 2018. In the three years since our momentous move to the High Street, we have won a clean sweep of the highest industry awards. A great accolade for the dedication of my hard-working team serving our Leicestershire clientele. We have certainly searched for the hero within ourselves! Moving on up as we prepare for Christmas... certainly, our jewellery collections are a Sight for Sore eyes with a breath-taking new collection of yellow and pink diamonds. We are so excited to be able to show them to you, so please Don’t look any further afield! Hublot Big Bang MECA 10 Ceramic Blue - £18,200

We are equally excited about our One night in heaven when Heather Small performs in our VIP room. It promises to be an outstanding evening pushing the boundaries of our event space to an even greater use.

It just remains for me to wish you all a fantastic Christmas and a very Happy New Year and I hope we see you over the festive period...How can I love you more?!

Matthew Hayes Editor As always, time files and it doesn’t feel like six months since we brought you the latest spring/summer edition of Aspirational Magazine, but here you are with the autumn/winter edition to enjoy! You will probably notice when flicking through the following pages we have had a little makeover. It comes with us committing entirely to being the region’s leading luxury lifestyle magazine, and we felt we needed a re-vamp to complement this. Hopefully you’ll like the design just as much as we do! By now, you will be used to the front cover of our magazine featuring some of the world’s biggest female stars, and this edition features one of the world’s most famous models, Gigi Hadid. Our cover feature on the star charts her rise to the top of the industry and offers a glimpse of what it is that has made Gigi so successful on and off the runway. Our Sporting World section always features the very best sporting highlights from the region, and this edition heads further afield as we focus on some lesser known, but equally as exciting sports, from around the world. Always keeping a close eye on up-and-coming businesses both in the East Midlands and further afield, our Business Matters section will take a look at one of the region’s leading law firms, Smith Partnership, as they unveil their brand new Derby office, and we also outline some new businesses to look out for in the UK who have more than made their mark. Having a strong digital offering is incredibly important to businesses nowadays, and at Champions we pride ourselves on the strong web, SEO and social media teams we have available. Despite its importance, the world of digital can be difficult to understand and get right so be sure to check out our article on demystifying digital, and how you can use it effectively in your business. As always, the back of the magazine is where you will find our social pages which contain information on the numerous events we have organised and attended in recent times. I hope that all of you enjoy reading this edition of Aspirational Magazine!

THE NEXT GENERATION OF MODEL For many 23-year-old girls, living their lives in the spotlight and having their every move scrutinised sounds like an intimidating prospect. But then again, Gigi Hadid is not your average 23-year-old girl, and to her, paparazzi are just part of everyday life.

W

While many aspiring models and actresses tell a story of impoverished beginnings and overcoming adversity, Gigi’s journey to the top was arguably easier than most. The oldest child of real estate developer, Mohamed Hadid and Dutch television personality, Yolanda Hadid, Gigi, (birth name, Jelena Noura) ,and her siblings come from great privilege. Alongside her sister Bella and brother Anwar, Gigi grew up in Los Angeles and had a self-confessed privileged upbringing. While many in her shoes may take the silver spoon for granted, and adopt a lazy working life, Gigi has always been vocal about her drive to succeed on her own merits.

10 / /

In a recent interview with Vogue Australia, she said: “I know I come from privilege, so when I started there was this big guilt of privilege. I’ve always had this big work ethic, because my parents came from nothing and I work hard to honour them.” Modelling was always Gigi’s calling, but where cynics might suggest that her fame and fortune have given her a springboard to success, she was keen to prove to the doubters wrong. “There are so many girls who come [from] all over the world and work their a**es off and send money home to their families like my mother did, and I wanted to stand next to

Fashion and Entertainment

them backstage and for them to look at me and respect me and to know that it’s never about me trying to overshadow or take their place. So, when I started out I wanted to prove myself so badly that sometimes I would overwork myself.” Gigi’s first official shoot came when she was just two years old when Guess Clothing designer, Paul Marciano, discovered her. This led to Gigi modelling Baby Guess for the brand before her parents decided she should concentrate on school. However, this love for modelling did not waver and when she finished school at 16, she again teamed up with Marciano becoming the official face of Guess in 2012. Even from an early age Marciano knew that Gigi was destined for success, in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter he said: “From day one I said, she’s going to be a star. She came out with big lips, little tiny nose and big blue eyes. I said, “My God, this girl!” At just one day old! She’s done 12 campaigns with me now.” Whilst she continued her close working relationship with Marciano, her real big break came in 2013 upon signing with IMG Models. This decision saw her make the 2,797 mile move from LA to New York and the move paid off, as less than a year later, she’d made her debut at one of the biggest events on the fashion calendar – New York Fashion Week. Less than a month after that Gigi was the cover star on CR Fashion Book magazine, and this marked the beginning of floods of publications itching to have her face on their

12 //

cover and in their pages. Now, she has become a resident feature in Vogue, Elle, Grazia, Vanity Fair and many more. Her striking eyes and long blonde hair meant that she quickly became the top choice of brands and fashion houses across the world and as Gigi’s career progressed, she went from rising star to the most famous model in the world in a flash. In 2015 she claimed her wings and made her first appearance at the iconic Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show and has become a crucial part of the VS family ever since. An editorial model through and through, she has walked for the likes of Versace, Chanel, Marc Jacobs, and Tommy Hilfiger to name just a few. You’d be forgiven for thinking the confidence she exudes on the runway flows through her body, but despite her reputation as one of the best in the business, stage fright still rears its ugly head prior to hitting the catwalk. Much of this is about her constant desire to better herself, prove her worth and improve her performance – an invaluable trait that you don’t see in every model, particularly at this high level of the industry. In an interview with Bazaar she explained how she is always anxious to make a good impression on the runway. She said: “I’ve really been working on trying to get better and to learn from every show, so I take it as a learning experience, because I always want to do my best. But I think it’s always going to be nerve-racking for me. There’s always

a little thing, like the shoes [are tight] or the dress is heavy or whatever, so that’s what you’re focused on, to make sure your walk is going to go well.” Over the years there has been plenty of controversy in the modelling industry, particularly when it comes to concerns regarding body shape and body shaming. Despite her flawless figure, even Gigi has become a victim of horrific abuse online about her appearance. As one of the most famous models in the world she realised she needed to take a stand against this kind of abuse. One of the main reasons her body has changed so significantly was due to the fact that she was diagnosed with the autoimmune condition Hashimoto’s disease in 2014.

14 / /

In an inspirational Twitter post she announced that: “For those of you so determined to come up with why my body has changed over the years, you may not know that when I started @ 17 I was not yet diagnosed Hashimoto’s disease; those of you who called me “too big for the industry” were seeing inflammation & water retention due to that.” Going on to say “I will not further explain the way my body looks, just as anyone, with a body type that doesn’t suit your “beauty” expectation, shouldn’t have to. Please, as social media users & human beings in general, learn to have more empathy for others and know that you never really know the whole story. Use your energy to lift those that you admire rather than be cruel to those u don’t.” Now, it seems you can’t keep Gigi out of the headlines, whether it is paparazzi snaps of her and on/off boyfriend Zayn Malik or popping up on popular television programmes such as RuPaul’s Drag Race, Lip Sync Battle and as a host on the American Music Awards. But, as she has with her entire career, Gigi has taken it all in her stride. Splitting her time between magazine shoots and hitting catwalk runways across the world, Gigi has even found time to star in music videos alongside Zayn Malik, Taylor Swift and Calvin Harris. With her strong work ethic and ethos of being ‘focused, disciplined and motivated’, Gigi is sure to continue her successful career, long into the future.

But, casual doesn’t have to mean sloppy. T

The salon has built an enviable reputation as one of the premier hairdressing salons in the region with a wide range of treatments available, from a full head of highlights and hair extensions to the classic cut and blow dry.

Whether you are visiting for a quick trim, or an entirely new hair colour, the very special team of stylists are onhand to make you feel pampered from start to finish and provide you with the best aftercare advice to maintain the salon look at home.

Despite now being at the top of her game, Keri has never neglected what is first and foremost her passion which started at the age of just 13 – hairdressing. And, it’s her daily presence on the salon floor, her face on reception and regular communication with clients which has seen her grow a loyal clientele who have been going to her for more than 23 years.

Danique don’t just tame the tresses of women either, a unisex salon, Danique also offer men’s treatments including cut, shaping and facial hair shaving.

Away from the salon, Keri is also a renowned creative ambassador for professional haircare brand, Label.M and is a former ‘Expert of the Year’ winner for the brand. Her work with the brand has seen her, and some of her team at Danique, become regulars backstage at the bi-annual London Fashion Weeks styling top models. Having made a statement on the runways, Keri’s talent has also opened the door to some of the UK’s most prestigious events including the BRIT Awards and the UK Lingerie Awards. So, with plenty to brag about over the past 10 years, here’s to another decade of fantastic hair with Danique Hairdressing. Book in for a free consultation and advice with one of the Danique team. ACHIEVE THE OF YOUR DREAMS 28 //

To many of us, our smiles are one of our most defining features. Therefore, keeping it in the best condition is incredibly important. Across their two Derby based clinics, the team at Remarkable Smiles have spent 15 years helping clients achieve their dream smile through a widerange of high quality dentistry treatments. From simple fillings, to an array of cosmetic options, the clinic is dedicated to providing people with longlasting results, meaning they can wear their smile with pride. A dentistry like no other, what sets Remarkable Smiles apart from the rest is that their work is not restricted to just teeth and mouth treatments. Most recently, the clinic has begun to merge its traditional services with more popular cosmetic dentistry treatments.

Facial rejuvenation Our face and skin are just as important to us as our teeth which is why Remarkable Smiles have a wide range of facial rejuvenation treatments available including their incredible wrinkle relaxation treatment. While wrinkles are something age inevitably brings, that does not mean that there is nothing we can do about them. The best way to deal with wrinkles is to stop them from coming in the first place. While this may seem like an impossible task, Remarkable Smiles make it a reality. Remaining one step ahead of any signs of wrinkles, this treatment temporarily restricts movement in your face so that these wrinkles are unable to form. The treatment roughly takes 10 days to take effect, but when it does it can last for up to seven months before you have to think about topping up. With some of the East Midlands’ best clinicians performing treatments,

REMARKABLESMILES

clients always leave feeling refreshed and confident in their appearance. Another facial rejuvenation treatment that can help tackle wrinkles is dermal fillers. Filling in wrinkles to ensure a smoother appearance, this quick and easy procedure is a simple way to eradicate lines. Once the treatment has been done it will last for eight months.

Adult braces Braces have long been associated as a childhood necessity, but there has been a surge in adult braces in recent years. Remarkable Smiles have a number of adult brace options available that can rectify your crooked teeth. Their subtle and removable braces allows you to continue on your journey to straighter teeth, with progress reviews from the clinic conducted every couple of weeks. Adult braces are a big commitment, but the results speak for themselves.

Whitening If you want your teeth’s natural shade to be brighter, then the clinic can make you your own whitening trays and teach you how to use it at home. Every few weeks they’ll check in with you to see how you are progressing and you’ll soon have a smile to be proud of. They also offer special whitening packages for weddings and people whose teeth have long been damaged by smoking. For more information on all of the services Remarkable Smiles offer, get in touch. MEET THE NEW EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR AT BMI THE PARK HOSPITAL A personal visit from the Executive Director of the hospital you are being treated in, is something rarely seen, but it’s now the norm at BMI The Park Hospital, Arnold. The private healthcare centre has recently welcomed a new Executive Director, who is doing things a little differently…

I

In June this year, Amanda Dorkes, who is a pharmacist by trade, took on the role as the new Executive Director. Her previous career path has seen her work for some of the country’s biggest pharmaceutical names, Boots and Lloyds to name a few, as well as small, independent pharmacies. But, this move into the Executive Director role is an entirely new and exciting realm. BMI The Park Hospital is part of BMI Healthcare – one of the UK’s largest private healthcare centres – and provides vital medial care, surgery and diagnostic imaging to its patients. The 56-bed private hospital also has a critical care unit, provides chemotherapy, radiotherapy and palliative care to patients with cancer as well as offering paediatric care. Amanda is responsible for the daily running of the hospital, including managing the wellbeing of the staff, consultants and anaesthetists that work there, but she is taking a fresh approach to this management.

“I have lots of experience but have never run a hospital. I see that only as a positive though because I take a different approach to management.” Amanda said. “Rather than managing from a computer, I am always out and about talking to people. I want to learn how we do things. I want to stand and observe an operation in theatre. I want to visit patients on the ward. I want to talk to consultants. It is all part of my passion to make sure this is a positive place to work and to be a patient in.” It was while she was an inpatient at BMI The Park Hospital herself, that Amanda witnessed first-hand the excellent treatment and care the hospital provides and this is what inspired her to become part of the team. And, she’s already making a positive impact, helping the hospital receive a ‘Good’ in a recent unannounced Care Quality Commission (CQC) assessment – a crucial assessment framework for healthcare services in the UK. The rating is a reinforcement of the staff ’s commitment to putting their patients at the heart of everything they do. And, Amanda certainly has solid plans for the hospital’s future too: “I was extremely proud of our ‘Good’ rating, but now I am determined to turn it into an Outstanding’ on our next CQC assessment. Very few hospitals in the country have managed to achieve an ‘Outstanding’, it’s very difficult to do, but I have every faith that our fantastic hospital can absolutely achieve that.”

SPORTS FROM AROUND THE WORLD 2018 has been a great year for the world of sport with the Winter Olympics, Commonwealth Games, and football World Cup all taking place. People from all over the world came together to enjoy some of the biggest sporting events on the planet, but away from these well-known occasions, the world also has plenty of other sports on offer.

A

Aspirational Magazine has taken a look at some of the lesser known, but equally as interesting sports, that are on offer across the globe…

France – Pétanque Similar to the game of bowls that is common throughout the world, pétanque is extremely popular in France even having their own national championships. Played on a hard surface opposed to a flat green, individuals or teams have to score points by throwing a boule closer to the target than their opponent. However, unlike the sport we are all used to, the throwing player has to stand in a small circle as they take their shot. There are several variations to the rules and it is not uncommon to find dedicated pétanque arenas in many French towns and villages.

Israel – Ga-ga Ball Played inside the ‘ga-ga pit’ arena this sport is similar to dodgeball in the sense that players are eliminated by being struck by a ball. The sport can be played one-on-one, with a group of individuals or in teams, and the aim of the game is to hit the ball below your opponent’s knees to eliminate them from the pit. This can be done by kicking or hitting the ball, but players are not allowed to pick up and throw the ball. Ga-ga ball is extremely popular in Israel and has also spread to Australia and North America.

36 //

Switzerland – Snow Polo Polo is instantly recognisable in the UK with it being a quintessentially British sport played in the summer months. However, in other parts of Europe such as Switzerland, the game has been modified so it can be played all year round. Players ride on horseback attempting to hit a ball into the other team’s goal. Playing the game on snow or ice adds an extra element of excitement, and danger, to the game.

Spain – Bossaball Essentially volleyball on a huge inflatable trampoline, bossaball is an incredibly fun game where the only rule is that the ball must clear the net by the sixth touch. Any part of a player’s body can be used to return the ball, and due to the surface, the game is played on, regularly incorporates acrobatic moves from players.

United States – Quidditch No, you haven’t been transported to the wizarding world of Harry Potter, quidditch is also a sport in the muggle world too. Officially started in 2007 by colleges in America, the sport is now played all over the world. It involves two teams of eight players taking up the various fictional positions from the famous franchise. All players have broomsticks and the aim of the game is to score more points than the opposition. This can be done by throwing a ball through three protected hoops, or ‘catching the snitch’ which comes in the form of an impartial player who has a small ball attached to their shorts.

Finland – Pesapallo Pesapallo, the national sport of Finland, is perhaps most similar to baseball. The two teams take it in turns to individually pitch and bat. The main difference between

pesapallo and baseball is that the ball is pitched vertically, making it arguably easier to hit. This means that teams have to think tactically when it is their turn to pitch. Its popularity in Finland saw the Pesapallo World Cup start in 1992. Other nations such as Sweden, Germany and Australia have competed but Finland have won every single tournament.

United Kingdom – Underwater Hockey Starting on the south coast of England before becoming popular around the world, underwater hockey is one of the most physically demanding sports around. Similar to the main game, but taking place completely underwater, teams of ten attempt to hit the puck into the opposition’s goal. Players are normally extremely good at holding their breath as they only have a snorkel, as frequently returning to the surface for air can disadvantage their team.

THE RETURN OF THE FARMFOODS EUROPEAN SENIOR MASTERS

F

Following the success of last year’s inaugural event, this year marked the eagerly anticipated return of the Farmfoods European Senior Masters. Once again taking to the Forest of Arden Marriott Hotel & Country Club in picturesque Warwickshire, the Staysure Tour event included a stellar list of pros, from Ryder Cup winners, to legends of the European Tour.

an amateur partner with a Staysure professional, and once again there was a stellar line-up of players on the green. These included: 1991 Masters winner, Ian Woosnam OBE, French stars Jean van de Velde and Thomas Levet, Italian legend Costantino Rocca, European Tour winner Jarmo Sandelin, Staysure Tour player, Gary Wolstenholme MBE and event host, Peter Baker.

Thursday 4 October The first day kicked off with a fantastic Pro-Am which saw a whole host of Staysure Tour icons get to grips with the Championship Course prior to the main event getting underway on the Friday. In what was a team event, one Staysure Tour professional was paired with three amateurs and it was ‘Team Sofidel’ who came out on top. With a score of 90 points they clinched victory with the help of South Africa star, James Kingston, the team’s professional player. Castle Gate Financial Management were in second place with a score of 89 alongside Challenge Tour star, Paul Streeter, and ‘Woburn Whizzes’ in third with a score of 86. They were led by former Ryder Cup star, Thomas Levet. Friday 5 October The real competition began on the Friday as the competitive aspect of the event got underway. The Alliance element saw

And, it was Austrian star Markus Brier who took the lead early on. Scoring a fantastic -7 on the opening day, this performance saw him finish two strokes clear of Spaniard, Santiago Luna, three ahead of Ian Woosnam OBE and four ahead of Peter Baker - scoring three birdies, the European Tour winner put himself in an extremely strong position ahead of the second day’s play.

Sunday 7 October 2018

Rain delayed play on Saturday, meaning players had a shotgun start in the afternoon. It was Santiago Luna who impressed when play did eventually start and was one of only four players who managed to hit under par rounds due to the relentless conditions.

Conditions played havoc on day three of the event, but it couldn’t stop a dramatic final day of action at the Forest of Arden. The amateurs made way on the final day as the professionals battled it out as the competition reached its climax. With a €200,000 prize fund up for grabs, €50,000 of which going to the winner, the final day was fiercely contested.

Leapfrogging overnight leader, Markus Brier, Luna was joined by Peter T Wilson at the top of the leaderboard, as they finished the day on -7 in a two-way tie, one stroke ahead of Brier. 2004 British Masters winner, Barry Lane, who has a history of winning at the Forest of Arden, was also within touching distance with a score of -5. The Alliance team event was also being played alongside the main competition and saw Liverpool legend, Steve Staunton and Gary Marks triumph with a score of -14. This win saw the pair take home some great prizes including a large suitcase with Sub70 merchandise inside, an Eleven golf bag with three and four rescue clubs, a leather score card, a pair of Duca del Cosma shoes and a one night stay with dinner, as well as a round of golf for two, across five Marriott Country Clubs in the UK. In second place were James Kingston and Jeremy Wilson, with Duncan Sinclair, Stephen Bennett and Jarmo Sandelin in third. All of these players also won a widerange of fantastic prizes for their achievement.

40 / /

It was Santiago Luna who maintained his grip on the competition, he began the day tied with Peter T. Wilson with the lead but soon began to pull away from the pack. Scoring birdies on the fourth, sixth and seventh holes, he soon had a three stroke advantage on the rest of the field. Bogeying the 16 th, things suddenly became too close for comfort for Luna as Ian Woosnam OBE moved to within on shot of the Spaniard. However, Luna remained composed and birdied the next hole which secured his title. This win marks his fourth title on the Staysure Tour, and his first of the 2018 season. Speaking of the victory he said: “This week was fantastic. I have a good relationship with the golf course. I hit it fantastically and I had a good feeling on the greens and that was really important because the greens were unbelievable. They were really fast but really nice, the golf course was unbelievable, and I played really well. I kept a good attitude, and everything was with me.”

Available between Monday–Saturday the main Mezzeh option includes either Tabouleh salad, houmous, lamb kibbeh, lamb sambousik, chilli pork sausage and fattayer, or king prawns and samki harra, shish kebab, chicken and lamb kebab and couscous. There is also vegetarian Mezzeh options to choose from, which offer fresh tastes from tabbouleh salad, houmous and baba ghanouche, to lentil pâté, pumpkin kibbeh, and cheese sambousik. These stunning Mezzeh offerings give people an insight into the wonders of traditional Lebanese cuisine, something they may not be able to experience anywhere else. The Nag’s Head’s wine list also follows this theme and as well as a wide range of traditional reds, whites and roses, sumptuous Lebanese wines are available on request, imported from the stunning Bekka Valley in the country. Along with their Lebanese themed dishes, the eatery also hosts French and Spanish themed nights on a monthly basis. As well as this, for guests who ring ahead before their visit, they are able to cook any dishes on request. Recent years have seen the venue undergo a restoration with the ground floor being extended making it the ideal place for private functions and corporate gatherings.

The only Indian restaurant in the city to pair wine and Champagne with Indian food, the choices of drink perfectly compliment the delicious food, and MemSaab regularly put on a wide range of wine and Champagne pairing events every year. As well as their incredible à la carte and Chefs Specials menus, the fine dining restaurant also offer diners the opportunity to choose one of their set menus if they are in a group of eight or more, which comes with main options of chicken tika masala, lamb rogan josh, chicken garlic chilli and much more. If you would like to book a table for a meal with friends or family, MemSaab have that covered to. ASPIRATIONAL FOOD AND DRINK PERKINS BAR & BISTRO

MARCO’S NEW YORK ITALIAN

THE QUEEN’S HEAD

Plumtree, Nottingham

Packington Hill, Kegworth

Belton, Loughborough

Perkins Bar & Bistro, located at Plumtree’s beautiful former Victorian railway station offers the perfect balance of fresh quality food and outstanding service.

The Leicestershire village of Kegworth isn’t a location you’d usually associate with the best Italian/American cuisine, but at Marco’s New York Italian, that is exactly what you get.

Aspirational Magazine recently sampled the delightful menu at The Queen’s Head. The cosy pub is situated in the quaint village of Belton.

Whether you’re popping in for a pint and a sharing board, a light lunch or a delicious three course dinner, the award winning front of house team will ensure you have a dining experience to remember.

The Marco Pierre White eatery offers an extremely relaxed setting for guests to enjoy their food and can choose from a wide range of delicious sharing platters. These include fresh seafood, homemade pizza as well as Marco’s special hickory smoked baby back ribs with crispy calamari.

The mix of contemporary and rustic décor was instantly appealing. The Queen’s Head has a homely feel which is carried throughout the restaurant.

An ever-changing Prix Fixe lunch and daily specials run alongside a seasonal a la carte menu. The bistro also hosts afternoon tea, Saturday morning breakfast and a hearty Sunday lunch offering. Whatever the occasion, Perkins commits to using the highest quality ingredients, local where possible. The menus are not restricted to food – alongside an extensive wine list, there are cocktails, gin and tonics, aperitifs and draught beer. In terms of interior, the rustic tables and brass light fittings offer a relaxed countryside bistro feel. There are monthly ‘Taste The Season’ evenings, live music on a Friday night and sell out Perkins Gastronomic taster events taking place throughout the year. If you are looking for a private party, Perkins Bar & Bistro offers a dedicated 26-cover dining room, or alternatively, the whole venue is available for private hire. If you are looking for something even more grand, Perkins’ sister venue ‘The Carriage Hall’ is one of the region’s most prestigious event venues able to host up to 120 guests seated – perfect for any occasion!

Whether you want lunch, dinner, or simply some snacks from the bar there is something for everyone. Just a short distance away from East Midlands Airport, the restaurant also makes for the perfect place to stop off for a bite to eat before jetting off. With Christmas and New Year approaching there is also a number of festive options to choose from. Alongside the Italian classics, a Christmas menu is on offer from 23 November, and guests can also book for Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. Another aspect of Marco’s New York Italian that sees them stand-out from the rest is there wonderful live music nights. Each Saturday acts take to the stage in the restaurant to perform for guests. As well as the traditional Italian/American dishes, Marco’s also understands the importance of British tradition. This is where their afternoon tea comes in. Served from 2pm to 5pm you can treat yourself to a range of delicious teas and sandwiches and for those of you with a sweet tooth, a variety of cakes and treats.

And why not end your meal with an overnight stay in one of the luxury Shepherds huts? With a Full English breakfast the following morning.

The main menu matches the season with a tempting selection of comfort foods. For starter we selected both sharing boards. Firstly we chose the sumptuous Spanish tapas with mini chorizo, serrano ham, manchego cheese and quince and secondly the aromatic baked camembert topped with local honey and fresh rosemary. Both boards were served with freshly baked bread. After the perfect amount of wait time between courses we tucked into dishes including fillet steak, whole grilled plaice on the bone – both of which came with rustic cut chips – chicken Kiev paired with creamy mash, vegetarian fettucine with gorgonzola and chilli and sausage and mash with a red wine and shallot sauce. For the sweet lovers there is also a number of desserts to satisfy cravings including lemon sorbet and homemade waffle. It was clear that the head chef had sourced the freshest selection of meat, fish and vegetables and overall he has succeeded in compiling a menu of exquisite food for all tastes and preferences. The pub also houses a private dining area ideal for weddings, conferences and other special occasions. There are also four very homely bedrooms available.

CULTURAL QUARTER BECOMES THE NEW HOME TO THE QUEEN VICTORIA ARTS CLUB Leicester’s iconic Cultural Quarter has recently welcomed a brand-new restaurant and bar to its offering as the ribbon was cut on The Queen Victoria Arts Club in October.

T

The most recent project from Cassie Soulsby, a Leicester-born entrepreneur with years of experience in the hospitality industry, The Queen Victoria Arts Club is set to be the talk of the town. Situated inside The Queens Building, the restaurant is a marriage between modern-day and the traditional stylings of an old arts club. As for the food, diners can enjoy the best of British with lunch and à la carte menus available. The style of a traditional arts club has been carried through to the drink’s menu too with classic cocktails and a top selection of Champagne on offer. The location for the new restaurant is perfectly situated, with the beating drum of the Cultural Quarter, The Curve Theatre, just a stone’s throw away. To complement its surroundings, a pre-theatre menu has been created by the restaurant’s talented chef, so theatre-goers can pair great food with a great show.

A venue for all occasions, the restaurant has also unveiled its three private dining rooms which can be used by diners wishing for a more intimate gathering. The interior of a restaurant is a diner’s first impression of what is to come and visitors to the Queen Victoria Arts Club won’t be disappointed. Housed inside a Grade II Listed building, which was erected in 1897 in-line with Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee, the building’s history has influenced much of the restaurant’s interior – and even its name. Due to the building’s age, there were building restrictions in place, but Cassie and her team have worked around them and created an extraordinary space suitable for all occasions. When the curtain came down on the venue, it was revealed that while the restaurant would be open to the general public, there was also an opportunity to become a resident member – such was the norm in traditional arts clubs. This annual membership unlocks many benefits including access to the three members rooms, priority booking, an invitation to the annual charity Champagne reception as well as exclusive members-only events. URBAN ANTIDOTE ART HEAD TO NEW HOME The world of art can often be a complex and overwhelming place. Unless you are an art aficionado with a vast knowledge, it can be difficult to know what all the fuss is about.

W

However, one Leicester based gallery, believe they have the perfect ‘antidote’ for that.

With a wide range of pieces, and collections from artists of many genres, Urban Antidote believe they have something for everyone. Whether you are an art enthusiast or new to the artistic world, the gallery is the region’s leading art gallery, and is the brain child of Sara Lovatt and Rich Atkiss, who founded the gallery in 2013. Recently, the gallery has moved to new city centre premises. Relocating from Lutterworth, where it has spent the last five years, October 2018 saw the gallery head to Silver Walk in St Martin’s Square. Here, it will continue to showcase collections from a whole host of artists. This includes JJ Adams, who has become renowned for his interpretations of celebrities and figures from pop culture. To celebrate the new gallery, Urban Antidote hosted a fantastic launch event which was attended by a whole host of artists, including JJ Adams himself.

Business Matters

THE NEWEST UK COMPANIES TAKING THE WORLD OF BUSINESS BY STORM 500,000 have already got going this year alone, and it has also been predicted that 80% of entrepreneurs fail within the first 18 months with half of start-ups not making it to the four year mark.

T

There are numerous reasons why businesses do not succeed, but for the ones who do manage to make an impact, it is often their passion and dedication to go that extra mile that sees them flourish. Here at Aspirational Magazine we have outlined some of the country’s best up-and-coming businesses.

Craft Gin Club – Est. 2015 Living in a time where time is precious and every second counts, some of the most successful businesses in the country, are those that bring something directly to their customers. This is exactly what Craft Gin Club do, and with the UK gin industry seeing sales rise to more than £1bn within the last year, it’s clear to see why. From traditional British offerings, to a variety of fruity gins, people can choose from quarterly, bi-monthly and monthly offers. Each box comes with a surprise craft gin, cocktail mixers, sweet & savoury treats and their 36 page gin magazine. The business has seen much success since its inception, turning over £6m in 2017, and has become the UK’s largest gin subscription service even featuring on Dragons’ Den and winning an investment from Sarah Willingham.

The Goodness Project – Est. 2016 Sticking with the subscription service theme, The Goodness Project bring vegan, gluten-free and natural foods straight into the hands of health-conscious consumers. Many of us are becoming more aware of what we eat and so the company work alongside numerous big-name health brands including Creative Nature, Yogi tea and Nakd to ensure people get the highest quality food. With more than 2,000 subscribers and counting, they also include personalised handwritten notes in every box and create unique snack boxes for work places.

82 / /

PlanSnap – Est. 2018 Many new businesses come in the form of apps and social media platforms these days, and PlanSnap is one that is certainly making a difference. Launched in April by entrepreneur Louise Doherty, she realised there was a gap in the market for an app where friends could come together to make social plans. Research has shown that on average it takes nine apps, 22 app switches, 77 swipes, 13 minutes on the phone and 10 text messages to agree on a plan, but with PlanSnap all of this hassle is minimised. The app uses the latest technology to display group plans with members and uses smart technology to confirm the plan with the group. People aren’t even required to have the app, with information also being sent to people via text message.

Appsumer – Est. 2016 Marketing campaigns are vital for a business to stand out and assisting companies with impactful campaigns is a new app – Appsumer. A software-as-a-service (Saas) the business helps people to optimise their marketing strategy in order to achieve a maximum return on their advertising spend. Since launching their offering the company have worked alongside some of the biggest mobile ad spenders in the world. Appsumer have ambitions to dominate the world of marketing with the mobile market their first step into what is sure to be an extremely successful business long into the future.

SUPPORTING THE NEXT GENERATION OF FLYERS The Royal Air Forces Association is committed to supporting the RAF family, present and future. Now, helping to nurture the next generation of flyers, the charity is giving 16-19-year olds the opportunity to learn to fly, through its 2019 scholarship programme.

T

The flying scholarship programme has been running successfully for more than 11 years, and this year there are 12 exciting scholarship places available. One successful applicant will receive 35 hours of flight training in a light aircraft, and, depending on the rate of progress, the course could result in a Light Aircraft Pilot Licence. The 11 other selected candidates will each receive 12 hours’ training. Applications are open to members of the RAF Air Cadets, which includes the Air Training Corps (ATC) and the Combined Cadet Force (RAF), the Girls Venture Corps Air Cadets (GVCAC) and the Air Scouts/Air Explorer Scouts. They must also have served at least 12 months with the RAF Air Cadets, GVCAC or Air (Explorer) Scouts on 1 June 2019. The scholarship selection process is designed to take applicants on a learning experience to help equip them for other types of selection in their future careers.

Aptitude Testing Shortlisted applicants will be invited to RAF Cranwell in Lincolnshire, where an interview and aptitude test will be carried out before learning if they have been successful. Winners will be presented with their scholarships at the charity’s Annual Conference in May, and the flying lessons will take place in the summer of 2019 at South Warwickshire Flying School. The scholars will be provided with overnight accommodation while engaging in the programme. Three of the scholarships are being sponsored by MBDA, a multi-national company that designs and produces missiles for all three armed forces, and one of them by the Aviation Focus Group, which promotes the exchange of aviation information, and encourages young people interested in the industry. The RAF Association is funding the rest. Applicants must be aged 16 on 1 January 2019 and under 20 on 1 June 2019. The application form, along with full terms and conditions, can be downloaded from www.rafa.org.uk/flying-scholarships. The closing date for applications is 31 January 2019.

Some of last year’s winners, proudly accompanied by their parents, are pictured receiving their scholarship certificates from the President of the RAF Association, Air Marshal Sir Baz North.

THE CONSULTANCY THAT PUTS YOUR BUSINESS FIRST There’s no denying that running a successful business a challenge at times. There are a whole host of hurdles that business leaders have to overcome on a daily basis, but even some of the biggest moguls need support. This is where The Turnaround CEO come in.

S

Set up by sales and leadership expert, Amanda Daly, the business consultancy works with companies across multiple sectors. Dedicated to helping businesses flourish, Amanda brings passion, energy and drive to each and every business she works with, setting them on the right path to achieving their goals. In order to help a business reach their full potential, Amanda uses lessons and experiences from her own career to provide advice and guidance to her clients. Starting her career in a PR firm, she then went on to spend 22 years with business communication and IT solutions company, Dalycom, eventually progressing through the company to the role of Managing Director. Amanda still spends one or two days a week with Dalycom but The Turnaround CEO has become her main passion since it was formed in 2016. A self-confessed workaholic, Amanda knows first-hand just how all-consuming a career in business can be, and this is what triggered her to start The Turnaround CEO. She

explained what made her re-evaluate what is important in life and why she started this new venture. “I am a workaholic and that will never change, but I let work take over my life. This is why I’m so passionate with Turnaround, as I would go as far to say that my work almost broke me. It completely consumed me which made me begin to resent it. That resentment changed me as an individual as well.” “I began to hate going to work and it got to the point where it didn’t challenge me either. Because I’d been there for 22 years, any problems we faced I instantly knew the answer. Because of that I wanted to setup a new challenge, and it was my own business coach who encouraged me to do it. This is when I started The Turnaround CEO.” Amanda has her own process in place with the first step being to help these leaders find their purpose. Often a business struggles because those at the top have some kind of block that prevents them from fulfilling their potential.

Seeing a business’ progress really is one of the most rewarding things... 86 / /

This could be anything from a lack of belief, knocked confidence or simply struggling to make important decisions. Once Amanda has helped them overcome this, she assists them with setting goals and helping them achieve them, one step at a time. Once all of this is in place, she can begin to look at business growth and really take companies to the next level. Succession planning is also a big part of The Turnaround CEO. Realising that for many business leaders, as their life and career progresses they may want to take a backseat or even leave a business completely, Amanda helps put plans in place for when this time comes, ensuring it is left in the right hands, and a great legacy is left behind. Seeing the transformation in the businesses she works with is one of the main reasons Amanda enjoys her work so much.

“Seeing a business’ progress really is one of the most rewarding things. It normally takes around three months to get a bit of traction, but the biggest buzz is when you see the leaders start enjoying it again. When you see them gaining the passion again, you can see sales coming in and you can see people wanting to get back into it. Amanda also regularly puts on numerous events and workshops on topics including succession planning and employee ownership, providing businesses with her expert insight on these topics. For more information on The Turnaround CEO and all of the services Amanda can provide, call her on 01509 274 119 or visit www.theturnaroundceo.co.uk.

A BRAND NEW HQ For over two decades Smith Partnership have delivered to the people of the Midlands expert legal advice in all fields of law. Established in 1987, they have gone on to become one of the largest solicitors firms in the Midlands and this year has seen them continue their growth trajectory as they open a brand new office space at Norman House on Friar Gate in Derby. The firm have a network of offices in the Midlands including Leicester, Burton upon Trent, Stoke-on-Trent and Swadlincote and for their new Derby offices, worked alongside local interior designers, Three Hundred & Sixty Degrees. The space was empty for five years prior to this development which meant a tough task for the design team. An unorthodox space, the team at Smith Partnership were initially unsure whether it would suit them. However, after detailed discussions with Three Hundred & Sixty Degrees, and landlords MCR, they decided to go ahead with the move. And, the decision paid off. The new office includes meeting spaces, washrooms, a staff kitchen & breakout areas and open plan offices. As a law firm that prides itself on delivering honest, practical advice, who help clients deal with some of the most important events in their lives, the office also needed meeting rooms to liaise with clients and quiet booths for report writing which have been incorporated into the space.

Partner at Smith Partnership, Claire Twells, explained her delight with the new office. She said: “It has been an exciting time and it’s great to see our vision become a reality. We wanted the office to be different from any other conventional law firm. Our main focus was to make this a unique and prominent space not only for our employees but of course our clients.” Howard Barnes is the Director of Workplace Change at Three Hundred & Sixty Degrees and he explained how they knew straight away it was the perfect space for a new office. He said: “From the minute we stepped into the space I could see the potential. It had so much going for it, high ceilings, gallons of natural light, split level floors, it just needed an occupier with the vision to capitalise on it!” Smith Partnership deal with all areas of law including criminal law, family law, dispute resolution, and much more. So, whether it is dealing with a private business where they need to manage life’s upheavals with sensible planning to ensure full legal protection, or commercial business where their team of 3O specialist lawyers can lend a hand to the local business community, the new office space is perfect for all of the firm’s legal requirements. Work on the offices was completed at the end of May, and with all the elements now in place, Smith Partnership’s new home, with its cutting edge approach, looks different to anything else Derby has to offer. To celebrate the official opening of the new HQ, Smith Partnership teamed up with Marketing Derby to host a Bondholder event on 6th September where over 2OO local businesses were in attendance to enjoy Champagne, a treasure hunt to explore the new premises and some delicious ice cream. The ice cream was sourced from a local family run social enterprise, Just-Ice, who sell ice cream to create jobs for survivors of human trafficking and raise funds to rehab child soldiers. The evening began with the official cutting of the ribbon by the Mayor or Derby, Frank Harwood, and two Derby County players, Craig Bryson and Craig Forsyth along with the management committee, as well as the unveiling of the plaque in the waiting area of the new offices by Smith Partnership’s Kevin McGrath and the Mayor of Derby. The evening was a massive success, thanks to everyone involved and everyone who attended. HOW WELL DO YOU SPEAK DIGITAL? It’s no secret that our world is changing at a rapid rate. We are now living in an era full of amazing digital experiences that are transforming the way we go about our daily lives. For some, the impact of this new digital world is frightening, for others it’s exciting and for some, it’s just plain confusing.

U

Understanding the world of digital marketing is like learning a new language. It’s complex and constantly evolving. But whilst learning a new language is fun and exciting, it can quickly become a necessity when you find yourself in a foreign territory. Being unable to understand what those around you are talking can be isolating and unnerving; and it’s no different for business’ owners working with digital marketers. But don’t worry, here at Champions Digital we have a user-friendly team who are all ‘mother tongue’ speakers in this world. By helping you to make sense of all the digital ‘jargon’, we can guide you from these early learning slopes right through to mastering the language.

significantly grow your business beyond four walls. It’s like having a global shop window where people can see what you have to offer anytime, anywhere.

Social Media Marketing The practice of social media marketing is about more than just ‘likes’ and ‘shares’. It’s about promoting your brand on popular platforms to increase brand awareness, drive people to your website and generate valuable leads. Today, 83% of adults are spending time on the likes of Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat. So unsurprisingly, it’s a great way to interact with customers and advertise your products around the world.

So, for the first step let’s ask, how well do you speak digital?

Email Marketing

The Awkward Beginner

Often used to promote recent articles, discounts and upcoming events, email marketing is the practice of sending emails directly to your customers. By sending out personalised emails (eShots), you can improve the way you communicate with customers and continue to build a great relationship.

Stage one- the awkward beginner. You’ve heard that the future is digital but you’ve just about sussed using emails on your phone and discovered that Facebook is ‘a thing’. Now is the time to learn the basics that will get you through the initial stages of introducing your businesses into a digital world.

Web Design & Development Websites are arguably your most valuable marketing tool. They essentially act as a central hub for your business; a place where all your marketing efforts point towards. They allow you to showcase your brand identity, sell products, supply contact information and increase consumer trust. If designed and developed professionally, a website can

Online PR

PPC

Much like traditional PR, online PR is about secure online coverage with digital publications and other content-based websites. Today, millions of people are spending time reading online, so ensuring your brand is spoken about both on and offline is essential.

As another way of getting people to your website, pay-perclick advertising is a great way to gain instant results. By using text or image-based adverts, you can send people to your website and only pay when they actually click on your ad.

The Improving Intermediate

Typically, these ads appear at the top of search engine results pages but you can also pay for top slots on most social media platforms and third-party websites. You can also target customers who have either visited similar websites or left your website before completing a purchase.

Stage two- the improving intermediate. You understand the basics that help you to get by, but now you want to learn about the key phrases that bring things together and makes everything a lot clearer.

SEO Search Engine Optimisation. The magical, mystical art of getting your website to “rank” higher in search engine results pages. Or, as we know, it’s the practice of helping search engines to better understand your website’s offering and driving people to your website for free. Whilst there are many factors affecting where your website ranks, some of the core ones include: incorporating keywords, producing quality content, providing a good user experience, securing quality links from other websites and improving the overall credibility of your website.

Content Marketing Content marketing is focused on creating and distributing engaging content for your target audience. This can include producing blogs, infographics, white papers, videos and much more. Without quality content, marketing is impossible. Content creation is the driving force behind your whole marketing strategy and plays an important part in improving your SEO efforts, interacting with users and ultimately, driving profitable customer action.

Nothing is more frustrating than experiencing a website that is hard to use, whether it be on your desktop, laptop or mobile. User Experience Design is the practice of ensuring that this isn’t the case and instead your website is easy and enjoyable to use.

Stage three- being fully-fluent.

To create the ultimate experience, UX designers consider important factors such as accessibility, page loading speed and the overall page design to ensure user needs are fulfilled in the easiest way possible.

CRO Often aligning with UX design, Conversion Rate Optimisation is the practice of increasing the percentage of people who take a desired action on your website. Whether it be signing up for a newsletter, submitting and enquiry or making a purchase, CRO will maximise the efficiency of your marketing efforts and creating a high-performing website. This could include testing different elements such as your text, choice of colour or images.

Now you are hitting the advanced stages of learning the Digital language. You can converse easily but some of the more difficult words and concepts are holding you back. So here’s what you need to know to move seamlessly from one language to another...

AI Artificial Intelligence is rapidly becoming central to the digital world. The idea of living in a world run by robots and machines is no longer unheard of as we continue to use technology to improve our everyday lives. But don’t panic, the robots are not taking over. Instead, their uses are being gradually shifted across from the secret labs at NASA into the everyday practical world. AI is a fairly generalised terms that encompasses different approaches and technologies that set up to ‘think’ like humans. It’s ultimately about using machines to analyse customer behaviour and create a data-driven approach for making your business more efficient and profitable.

Voice Search & Speech Recognition As one of the latest developments to transform the digital world, voice search and recognition is now very much a hot topic. A prime example is the development of personal assistants such as Siri, Alexa and Google Home, which are being introduced in homes across the world. With this new technology, we can now search, shop and control elements in our environment all from the comfort of our sofa. As a result, businesses now need to actively optimise their web pages and product listings for voice search to ensure their products can be found at all times.

Talk to The Natives - Champions Digital We admit the digital ecosystem is a complicated one, but once you start to understand the basics and begin to immerse yourself with native speakers, you soon become well on your way to mastering this complicated language. At Champions Digital, we recognise not only the difficulty of understanding Digital, but the power and the potential it has for many businesses. As native speakers, we understand the many layers to the digital ecosystem and take our clients on a journey that, not only helps to build their business, but also improves their ability to speak digital.

So what are you waiting for? Whether you’re eager to learn the basics or looking to take the step to total transformation, our team of digital experts are here to take you from beginner to bilingual. Celebrating five years of success with Steve Crawford, Centre Director of College Court Why did you want to join College Court? The main attraction was the excitement of setting up a new business from scratch. While I had experience of working on major build / refurbishments the greatest challenge and indeed joy was building a brand new team many of whom are still in the business five years after opening.

What is your biggest challenge? From day one we set the bar high in terms of the quality of service and the fabric of the building. We all work very hard daily to maintain and improve our offer to the customer.

Have you observed any changes in client requests over the last few years? Customers, understandably, want their venue to be flexible, offer resilient AV and IT that is fully supported, food to be innovative, fresh and consistently to a high standard and professional friendly service.

What can we expect from College Court and Leicester Conferences over the next 12 months? Continual growth on sales coupled with investment into the business. College Court will soon be spending in excess of ÂŁ200k to improve the ambience of the restaurant and adapt some of our bedrooms to twins and an innovation room to encourage creative thinking.

What are your interests? The hospitality business is in my DNA and I feel proud and privileged to work in such an exciting profession with some amazing people. We have also recently bought a puppy, a very cute red Cavapoo, called Tui (named after the travel agency!) and is fascinating to see her character develop, particularly at 4.30 in the morning‌I am continually told that it will get easier !?

CONQUER YOUR FEAR OF PUBLIC SPEAKING WITH ADRIAN PECK

Adrian’s services are broken up into four different types and include: • 1-1 mentoring – From ad-hoc sessions to year long programmes, Adrian’s private 1-1 service is the most personalised form of training he provides.

Whether it be addressing a few board members or pitching a new concept to an entire room of professionals, public speaking is a huge stumbling block for many people. Even some of the most influential people, past and present – Sir Richard Branson, Abraham Lincoln and Julian Roberts – have all famously had trouble when it comes to taking to the stage. However, public speaking and presentations are two things that most of us will have to face at some point in our lives, and careers. This is where Adrian Peck steps in to help.

Public workshops – Held regularly in Nottinghamshire, Adrian hosts one or two-day intensive public workshops. Interactive and fun to be a part of, the workshops are kept at an intimate number of six individuals.

Corporate workshops – Going into workplaces up and down the country, Adrian’s corporate workshops are aimed towards inspiring workforces and training them to become the best communicators they can be. Just some of the businesses and organisations that have benefitted from Adrian’s corporate mentoring include Specsavers, Sainsbury’s, Boots and GB Athletics.

• Sport mindsets – Aimed specifically at sportspeople, Adrian returns to his sport psychology roots and works with athletes to help them get start-line ready.

The founder of West Bridgford-based Ahead in Speaking, Adrian is a certified business coach and sport psychologist who works with individuals, students, teams, sportspeople and businesses, nationally and internationally, to develop their presentation and public speaking performances.

Adrian makes each and every session he holds, whether it be 1-1 or corporate workshops, fun and clear to follow while ensuring everyone leaves with the skills they need to succeed in speaking.

People of all ages and at all stages of their careers can benefit from the life-changing tools and exercises Adrian teaches. No public fears are too far-fetched for Adrian to handle, from fears of drying up on stage to concerns of not being perceived as credible, he has seen, and helped control it all.

There is something else that sets him aside from other speakers too: “What makes me different is that I’m an introvert by nature, but thanks to my own teachings I can put this aside and speak confidently in front of people every day. I am an introvert teaching introverts.”

Get in contact with Adrian today to find out how he can help you conquer your fear of public speaking.

GILES KRISTIAN BOOK LAUNCH TIMES best-selling author, and Leicestershire-born, Giles Kristian is an immensely talented author, with ten published novels to his name, and is perhaps best-known for his RAVEN trilogy, which focuses on one man’s journey as a Viking warrior.

E

Earlier this year, the author unveiled LANCELOT, a stunning re-telling of an Arthurian legend, and Aspirational Magazine got the chance to speak with the man behind the novel, to find out more… Get to know LANCELOT… Everyone knows the Arthurian legend as it has been told and re-interpreted throughout the years – from book, to film, to television and back again. Likewise, everyone has heard of the Knight of the Round Table, Lancelot. However, nobody has ever really told his story. Or, ever really given him a voice of his own. That is, until now… For this book, Kristian has ventured into an entirely new realm of writing as he takes on a whole new era and tells a stunning tale of Lancelot from boy to warrior. Speaking to Aspirational Magazine Giles Kristian explained what readers can expect from LANCELOT. He said: “Fans of Arthurian fiction will probably be expecting the typical Arthurian aspects, including the sword in the stone and the round table, but there’s no round table here, no swords being pulled from stones. Yes, Lancelot is portrayed as the famous warrior, the greatest and best, the man whose affair with his best friend’s wife presaged the downfall of Britain. But really there is a deeper story here, of love and loss and all that might have been. Everyone knows the Arthurian myth, but this isn’t that story.” Two years were spent working on this book and during the time of writing, Kristian experienced tragedy which ended up shaping the storylines now running through the novel. He explained: “Just after I began writing LANCELOT, my father died unexpectedly. It sent me into a spin. I began to wonder if I would ever finish writing the book. I wasn’t even sure I wanted to. In my grief, it was hard to sit alone at my desk writing what is in essence a tragedy. But I pushed on and channelled the pain into the heartfelt emotions within the story. Perhaps something positive has at last come out of my personal grief.”

120 //

He continued: “I poured my heart and soul into the book and the outcome is, I think, a very real, very honest story. I really hope that comes through when people read it.” The launch of LANCELOT… On the evening of Thursday 31 May, Aspirational Magazine were thrilled to be invited along to the launch of the novel at Sapori in Anstey. The evening went beyond what you would expect from a book launch though, and while Kristian did of course sign books on the night, guests had the unique opportunity to fully immerse themselves in the Arthurian world and get to grips with the concept of LANCELOT. Among the exclusive guests were characters inspired by the book – complete with a giant tree-man on stilts to signify the earthy nature of the book! Philip Stevens, who is a successful filmmaker and director, has been the voice of Kristian’s audiobooks since his first novel Raven: Blood Eye in 2009, and helped launch and preview LANCELOT by giving a reading on the night, whetting everyone’s appetite for what the book has in store. LANCELOT by Giles Kristian is available in all good book stores as well as online at Amazon.
