CARA
Dominic Gomersall writes: As the landscape of retailing continues to evolve, I am delighted to see the Leicester High Street dramatically improve. With investment from Hammerson in the Highcross and the imminent arrival of the Zara flagship store opposite, we can celebrate an improving city centre shopping experience. Of course, retailers should not rest on their laurels by just relying on a close proximity to quality shops, but we must continue in improving our own offering and experience. During the three years of residing on the High Street, we have not shirked from this. We have upgraded all the store and window lighting systems, tweaked visible retail areas and continually improved the store, both customer facing and behind the scenes. Fortunately, this has borne fruit as we have continued to enjoy the success of our move. We are now concentrating on the modern retailing methods that, in honesty, have suffered whilst we ensured the success of our relocation. My step daughter, Maddie, continues to impress with imagery and modernising our website and we have employed an experienced ecommerce executive, Kirstie, who will drive our social media platforms to create interest and sales online. We are working hard to ensure the website mirrors the environment you get in-store with stock being loaded daily, different offers and a helpful shopping experience. You should see a volume and choice of stock appear on the site over the next few months which really gives choice to the home buyer. Of course, I am personally of the generation who prefer a human relationship helping the buying choice. For this remit I am delighted that our in-store team goes from strength to strength and we continue to give service beyond our competition. We have a recent addition of Tony – an experienced jewellery designer and salesman who will bring your jewellery design imagination to life! Even my son, Freddie, now aged 12, can start reciting interesting facts on Breguet, Hublot and Breitling - ably taught by Robbie! As always, we have some fabulous events on the horizon. We are raising money for the Hope Against Cancer charity by having an action-packed Pit-Stop Challenge day in June. 40 teams of clients will compete by changing the wheel of a Formula 1 car outside the shop before racing each other on simulators within our VIP and the Hublot Drivers lounge! We have an amazing act booked for our Christmas events – certainly I cannot wait to announce who we have signed up and we will be having our Breguet dinner in September with Emmanuel Breguet himself joining us. We were equally delighted to have recently hosted an event for Mattioli Woods before their fantastic new buildings open on New Walk – welcome to the city centre! I always write this letter just a few weeks before the business end of our sponsorship’s seasons. Leicester Riders have again given reason for pride in their successful multi-trophy winning season. Expectation for Tigers is exceptionally high, but we are delighted to have re-signed them for next season and I know they will continually strive to be at the top table!

FASHION AND ENTERTAINMENT
THE BEGINNING OF SOMETHING Just as Elle Macpherson is known as ‘the body’, British supermodel turned actress, Cara Delevingne, could just as easily carry the name ‘the brows’. Known for her big, bushy eyebrows, when Cara made her catwalk debut in 2011, she brought a new look to the modelling game. And you could almost hear the industry breathe a sigh of relief. Speaking about the facial feature that saw her become the modelling world’s ‘it’ girl almost overnight, Cara told The Sunday Times: “They just grow. I’m lucky with the shape – I inherited it from my grandmother. I pluck a few, but I don’t shape them. I usually don’t let other people touch them, just in case. Of course, they’re insured for millions… I’m joking.”

FASHION AND ENTERTAINMENT
Cara made her official break-through into the high-fashion world when she featured in Burberry’s show as the face of their 2011 spring/summer campaign, although she had signed to Storm Model Management years before. By her last turn on the Burberry catwalk, the industry was screaming for more. And, just one year later, she had gone from simply being just another model to being highly sought-after by designers the world over. What followed was a whirlwind of designers – Chanel, Oscar de la Renta, Fendi, Moschino, Nina Ricci, Dolce & Gabbana – all yearning for the model to wear their clothes. And magazines – Vogue, Elle, W, Marie Claire – splashed her on their covers.
I always say, modelling is something I do, whereas acting feels more like what I [am].
Cara spent four years being the centre of the industry’s attention. It was a time period which saw Cara most notably walk all of the ‘big four’ fashion weeks, (Paris, Milan, London and New York), win ‘Model of the Year’ at the British Fashion Awards, form an unbreakable friendship with fashion mogul, Karl Lagerfeld, and was given her Victoria’s Secret wings – an accomplishment that many models strive for. THE END OF AN ERA… Cara has always held a torch for acting – she actually made her on-screen debut in 2012 alongside Hollywood heavyweights, Keira Knightley, and Jude Law, in 2012’s Anna Karenina. The part may have been small, but it was enough to whet her appetite for the profession and reassure her of her gut instinct – she was born to act. Always candid about her dreams, Cara told Glamour magazine: “I always say, modelling is something I do, whereas acting feels more like what I [am].” And, with that, in 2015, without a huge media hurrah, or emotional farewell, she parted ways with modelling to pursue, more seriously, her acting career. NEW BEGINNINGS… Though the jump from catwalk to cinema could have backfired, as it has done for the many models that have tried before her, her leading role as Margo Roth Spiegelman in 2015’s Paper Towns proved to the industry that they should expect big things from Cara. She took away three awards in her first year of acting including the Elle Style Awards’ ‘breakthrough actress’ award, and two Teen Choice awards for her performance in Paper Towns which included ‘Breakout Star’ and ‘Choice Summer Movie Star’. Her most exciting, yet challenging, role came in 2016 when she was cast as the Enchantress in the on-screen reimagining of DC Comic’s Suicide Squad. With DC Comic fans notoriously hard to please, the pressure was on for Cara, and her fellow castmates Will Smith, Jared Leto and Margot Robbie, to deliver. While the film, and indeed Cara, did not please die-hard DC Comic fans, Cara did not let the negative reviews knock her confidence. Instead, she used the negativity to fuel her fire, and she fiercely returned to the fantasy genre just one year later, as the protagonist in Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets.

PERSONAL LIFE… Since the world was first introduced to Cara, she has made no attempts to hide the real her, particularly when it comes to her sexuality. Cara is openly bisexual, and on this matter has always been an open book. In an interview with Rolling Stone she was asked whether she identified as gay or straight and she responded: “I don’t think about those words. I believe in gender fluidity and sexual fluidity. I don’t really identify as anything... I think you can fall in love with anybody.” She later had a frank discussion with Vogue about the same topic and delved a little deeper into her personal experiences
14 | ASPIRATIONAL.UK.COM
with coming to terms with her sexuality: “It took me a long time to accept the idea [of being attracted to women]—until I first fell in love with a girl at 20 and recognized that I had to accept it... we’re all liquid. We change, we grow.” After a string of relationships, including with One Direction star Harry Styles and fellow actress Michelle Rodriguez, in 2015 Cara made a public debut with her then girlfriend, American musician, Annie Clarke aka St. Vincent. Although the relationship was short, it was Cara’s first serious relationship, saying: “I’m completely in love. Before, I didn’t know what love was - real love. I didn’t understand the depth of it. I always used to think it was you against the world […] now I know the meaning of life is love. Whether that’s for yourself or for the world or your partner.”
WHAT’S NEXT? After nearly a year away from the screen, Cara is set to return later this year in the film Life in a Year. The role, where she stars alongside Jaden Smith, will be Cara’s most hard-hitting and poignant yet as she steps into the shoes of a teenage cancer patient. And, she has further proven her commitment to her art, with this film in particular, having shaved her head for the role. With a new film set for release and currently filming a new TV show, for Amazon, Carnival Row, 2018 in Cara’s own words is sure to be “a glitterier one”.
I don’t think about those words. I believe in gender fluidity and sexual fluidity.

ORIGINS OF STYLE – THE HISTORY OF BLACK-TIE EVENTS The tie began its life in seventeenth century France when Louis XIII stole the idea from the Croatian mercenaries he hired to fight for him in the Thirty-Year War. The king admired the piece of cloth tied around the Croatians necks so much that he made it a compulsory accessory at the French royal court and christened it a cravat (the French word for “Croat”) in their honour. However, exactly how the black tie or bow tie we now associate with the most prestigious social occasions and special events evolved out of a piece of rag round a Croatian solder’s neck is not quite clear. What we do know, however, is that it was in the late nineteenth century that the dinner jacket and corresponding back tie became popular amongst the British middle and upper classes who sought an alternative to the dress coat, which was an evening tailcoat that had begun to seem just a tad too formal.
22 | ASPIRATIONAL.UK.COM
Then in 1886 it properly became a part of fashion history when a formal ball was held by the tobacco magnate Pierre Lorillard on his estate in Orange County in New York state. We know how much influence this event was to have by the name of the club at which it was held: The Tuxedo Club. So, not only was the dinner jacket introduced to America, but it was taken to the heart of American society and given a new name that would last to this day.
events and people, and so in time they became synonymous with Hollywood and the glitz of the film industry. Amongst its most famous advocates were Charlie Chaplin, Humphrey Bogart, Frank Sinatra, Fred Astaire and Dean Martin. As time went on and the black tie lost some of its formality, other colours and designs began to creep in, but the bow tie was always a symbol of class and refinement. It would also later come to be strongly associated with intelligence, as various famous intellectuals, politicians and scientists began to favour it, including Sir Winston Churchill, Franklin Roosevelt, Saul Bellow and Arthur Schlesinger.
In the decades after the end of the Second World War, black tie events have become increasingly less rigid in their protocol and today quite a lot of variation is permitted. However, it’s still important to realize that black is very much used as a gentleman’s uniform. It is the beautiful dresses of the females at a black tie event that take centre stage in terms of colour and overall splendour. The male’s ‘uniform’ should never over-shadow this. It would be ungentlemanly to do so.
The Evolution of the Black Tie As the twentieth century progressed, dinner jackets and black bow ties became less associated with regular evening wear and more associated with the special events that came to be characterised by the tie that was an intrinsic part of the uniform. In turn, “black tie events” became associated with glamorous

BEAUTY AND HEALTH
FIND YOUR WAY TO LASTINGHEALTH In these days of Insta-worthy dining, clean eating and protein shakes, many of us are more conscious than ever before of what we put into our bodies. And yet, despite our best nutritional efforts, we may all still be running the risk of exposure to potentially harmful chemicals every day. Health test provider, Lastinghealth, highlight a report from the World Health Organisation that there are over 150,000 unnatural chemicals found in products we use and in our everyday environment, as well as in the products we use. Over time this build-up of toxins has the potential to impede health. Such chemicals can be found in items from makeup and sunscreen to sandwich bags, drinks bottles and even the air we breathe.
26 | ASPIRATIONAL.UK.COM
Taken in through the air or ingested after they have leached into our food and drinks from plastic packaging, these chemicals find their way into our bodies in all kinds of ways and are often difficult to avoid. With the potential to have a significant impact on the body, avoiding them is something we should all prioritise. For example, Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals (EDCs) such as phenol, can have a negative impact on our sleep, general development, mood and metabolism. Of course, tolerance to the various toxins varies from person to person and levels which may impact on one individual may be perfectly tolerable to another.
So, what’s the solution?
Want to avoid toxins? Try these tips…
Knowledge is power and finding out your personal levels of unnatural chemicals is the first step in reducing them.
1. Ditch the plastic – switch to a reusable, food grade stainless steel drinks bottle or a BPA-free plastic bottle.
Established with the aim of providing individuals with the opportunity to find out whether they are carrying a potentially toxic burden, Lastinghealth offer test kits which help individuals to take control of their wellbeing, now and for the future.
2. Shop organic wherever possible, even better, grow your own!
Easy testing…
3. Choose your beauty products carefully, opting for brands that use natural ingredients.
Testing for the unnatural chemicals that could be playing havoc with your system is easy to do and three test kit options are available; toxic non-metal chemical, urinary organic acids & toxic and essential element hair test.
4.
Once you’ve decided the test that’s right for you, it is simply a matter of supplying hair or urine samples to the lab for testing.
5. Exercise regularly; through sweat toxins can be removed from the body.
Results are presented in a straight-forward way and not only does the personalised report detail your individual chemical profile, it also indicates where such chemicals are mostly found along with tips on ways to counteract their impact. With a detailed picture Lastinghealth’s clients are able to make an informed choice about the products they use and can make steps towards reducing their exposure, helping to ensure that that next selfie posted to social media is a picture of health, both inside and out.
Clean your home using homemade cleaners. A blend of white vinegar, water, baking soda and tea tree essential oil is a natural way to cut through grease and grime.

Mental health is an integral part of how we feel about our jobs and how we interact with colleagues, customers and clients. With one in four employees currently experiencing mental health problems, mental health is an essential business concern. There is a strong relationship between levels of staff wellbeing and motivation and performance. Taking a positive and proactive approach to mental health at work can help businesses to grow staff and proactively develop the organisation.
A chair massage might not seem like much, what good can happen in a 10, 15, 20 or 30 minute seated massage at work? The answer turns out to be a lot. Studies have shown that the benefits of seated acupressure massage is almost instant. The mind and body begins to relax and recharge within just a few minutes. What better way to tell your employees you care about their mental and physical wellbeing. Maximising the benefits of seated massage with regular scheduled visits, employees love where they work! Imagine how much more good can occur when the brain and body are being refreshed on a regular basis.
What is a seated massage? Seated acupressure massage is quick and convenient. The massage is performed over the clothes on a specially designed chair and no messy oils are used. It is so easy to set up and does not require a substantial time commitment on behalf of the client. Seated acupressure massage is based on a traditional Japanese massage called ‘Anma’ that can work specifically on the back, neck, shoulders, head, arms and hands. Improving the flow of energy throughout the body, as well as acting on the muscular, nervous and circulatory systems to reduce stress, ease depression, muscle tension, lower blood pressure and increase lymphatic circulation, sitters are left feeling refreshed, relaxed and focused! Regular treatments will have a cumulative effect and provide a greater benefit.

SPORTING WORLD
Europe’s most successful Ryder Cup captain, Tony Jacklin CBE, gives the lowdown on this year’s event Golf’s most illustrious tournament, The Ryder Cup, returns this year as the best players from America and Europe descend on Paris for a wonderful weekend of golfing action.
Le Golf National, 28th-30th September 2018 This year marks the 42nd edition of the event where Europe will be hoping to reclaim the trophy which they lost to the USA two years ago in a 17–11 defeat. For the first time ever, the competition is set to take place in France on the Albatros Course at Le Golf National in south-west Paris. One man who knows everything there is to know about The Ryder Cup, is Europe’s most successful ever captain, Tony Jacklin CBE. The British hero is a two-time Major winner who helped mastermind Europe’s first ever victory over the Americans in 1985, captaining the team on four occasions. This year, Danish golfer, Thomas Bjorn, will be hoping to follow in Tony’s footsteps as he captains the team for the first time in his career. One of the key decisions the captain of the hosts has to make is how to set out the course, including making choices on where to set up the pins. Aspirational Magazine spoke to Tony and he explained how this could become a crucial factor in deciding the outcome of the entire tournament. He said: “How it plays out will depend on how Thomas Bjorn wants the course to be set up. At Hazeltine in 2016, America captain, Davis Love, had very little rough which favoured the long hitters in the USA team. So, he put the flags pretty central which caused a stir with some European players wanting the pins to be a bit tougher, but that was how Davis wanted it. Maybe Thomas will grow the rough up and narrow the fairways so there is that aspect to think about.”
Every year one of the biggest debates surrounding the competition is who the captain’s picks will be. Both captains will be able to select four players to complete their team. Europe’s other eight picks will be based upon the top four from the European Tour’s money list, and the four who are leading in the Official World Golf Rankings. These decisions can play a significant role in the outcome of the entire tournament and Tony emphasised just how important these could be. He said:
“As a captain you need to know that you have the absolute best 12 players available to you. Bjorn has some big decisions to make, clearly Ian Poulter is still one to consider with his Ryder Cup
record and the way he plays. He’s a good match player so Bjorn will have him in his sights I would think. Graeme McDowell is another one who will be doing his all to be considered. I still think it was a shame that Paul Casey wasn’t in the last competition having already played in three Ryder Cups and to not have him just because he wasn’t a member of the Tour I thought was a poor choice.” He continued: “America has some very strong young players, but so do we with the likes of Rahm and Fitzpatrick and they are an inspiring bunch. Sergio Garcia is another one who always seems to step up to the plate in The Ryder Cup as does Rory McIlroy. Tommy Fleetwood is another one who is the real deal, he’s come through this last year to prove he’s not a fluke. I hope he is able to maintain his form and there’s a lot of good players in Europe now. I think from Thomas’ point of view he’ll want the 12 who are at the top of their game as the event gets closer. There is no substitute for this as you can’t play your top men for the first two days all the time. They need some rest bite, so you need quality to fall back on.” Europe will be hoping to add an 11th Ryder Cup victory to their collection this year, which would make it four wins in five tournaments for the team, Tony discussed what the team will have to do in order to clinch victory. He said: “If we can get off to a fast start, which we can do if Bjorn gets the powerful players out there early, then we have a really good chance. It will certainly be close and we’re going to have some shocks I’m sure. In my experience you just have to wait for it all to unfold as anything can happen. Weather can play a part and all manner of things can contribute. The course setup as I mentioned earlier is important. Whatever happens I can’t wait for it all to get started in what is sure to be an exciting week!”
This year The Ryder Cup takes place between the 28–30 September and you can book Tony Jacklin CBE for a range of opportunities.
Tony Jacklin is available for media work, brand endorsements, ambassadorial work, public appearances and speaking opportunities. For more information, get in touch with Benoit Lawrence. Simply call, 07792 530 020 or email blawrence@championsukplc.com 32 | ASPIRATIONAL.UK.COM

THE FARMFOODS
European Senior Masters 2017 marked the start of a brand-new event on the European Senior Tour, (now called the Staysure Tour), with the inaugural Farmfoods European Senior Masters taking place at the stunning Forest of Arden Marriot Hotel & Country Club in Warwickshire. Over the years the venue has hosted many prestigious golfing tournaments, including European Tour events and the British Masters on three occasions and it provided the perfect backdrop for this inaugural event. A whole host of professional stars took part including Peter Baker, Paul McGinley, Ian Woosnam OBE, Sam Torrance OBE, Constantino Rocca, Jarmo Sandelin and Barry Lane. The field comprised of 15 Ryder Cup players, making the event the most decorated assembled field in the history of the European Senior Tour. Unlike most Tour events, the Farmfoods European Senior Masters is unique as it gives amateur players the opportunity to play alongside some true golfing legends in a real tour environment. A rundown of the best of the week’s play… Thursday 19 October The event was due to get underway with a Pro-Am on the opening day, with celebrities including Stuart Broad MBE, Dan Walker, Gordon Strachan OBE and Johnny Herbert all set to compete. However, bad weather meant play was suspended with guests retiring to the clubhouse as the evening’s entertainment was brought forward.
34 | ASPIRATIONAL.UK.COM
Guests were treated to a Q&A conducted by former Great Britain Olympic sprinter, Derek Redmond, as he discussed the golfing careers of some of the event’s finest players. These included the tournament host, Peter Baker. The former European Tour winner was also marking his first ever appearance on the European Senior Tour after celebrating his 50th birthday. Former Masters winner, Ian Woosnam, and 2014 Ryder Cup captain, Paul McGinley, also took part in the Q&A session where they relived some of their career highlights. Following this, Perrier awardwinning comedian, Dominic Holland, performed a hilarious comedy set. Guests also enjoyed a delicious three-course meal provided by the Forest of Arden’s team of expert chefs. Not even the torrential rain could spoil the atmosphere! Friday 20 October With the weather easing overnight, the pros were keen to get the tournament started. In the Alliance element of the event an amateur player was paired with one of the Tour professionals for the first 36 holes, which was played over the course of two days. A team prize was up for grabs, but individual scores were also recorded for the professionals, as these scores would contribute to the overall Farmfoods European Senior Masters leaderboard. Spectators were treated to some fantastic golf and at the halfway stage of the first round, Spaniard, Miguel Angel Martin, found himself ahead of the pack. With a first-place prize of €50,000 on offer to professionals, everyone was giving their all and the European Senior Tour’s Order of Merit leader, Clark Dennis, soon put himself in contention. Firing seven birdies and an eagle, he took a three shot lead into the weekend, with the 2016 Scottish Senior Open champion, Peter Eales, in second place.

THURSDAY 4TH – SUNDAY 7TH OCTOBER 2018 MARRIOTT FOREST OF ARDEN
Saturday 21 October The competition took a significant turn on the second day of action as Irishman, McGinley, piled the pressure on overnight leader, Dennis. In blustery conditions, McGinley found himself four shots behind the American going into the day’s play, but soon clawed himself back into contention. Famously known for holing the winning putt for Europe at the 2002 Ryder Cup at the Belfry, McGinley was in fine form making two exceptional birdies on the 7th and 12th leaving him just one shot off the lead ahead of the final round. Another former European Tour winner, Phil Golding, also played fantastically well seeing himself into third place. As the Alliance team competition came to an end, amateur Michael Doyle and former Ryder Cup star, Ronan Rafferty, took home the main prize after a fantastic round in which the pair finished on a combined seven under par total. (Pictured above centre). Sunday 22 October The climax of the event saw only professionals taking part, with all players taking to the course for a final 18-hole shootout for the title. Players teed off in reverse order setting up a grandstand finish for the event. Much of the day saw Dennis and McGinley continue to battle it out for the top spot in what was an extremely tightly contested final round.
36 | ASPIRATIONAL.UK.COM
However, in a twist that no one expected, Welshman Stephen Dodd emerged from the chasing pack to take victory in the most dramatic of circumstances. Beginning the day three strokes behind Dennis, he quickly made ground on the American. Playing in the penultimate group, Dodd holed a remarkable 40yard putt from off the 18th green, the Forest of Arden’s signature hole, to see him tie the lead at the top of the leaderboard with Dennis and McGinley still to play their last hole. With McGinley missing a tricky putt to drop a shot, Dennis could have forced Dodd into a play-off, however he missed his birdie putt, crowning Dodd the first ever winner of the Farmfoods European Senior Masters.

The Authors XI Vs. The Lord’s Taverners XI The Getty Wormsley Estate, Buckinghamshire 12pm Sunday 9th September 2018 EVENT ORGANISER
OFFICIAL CHARITY
The Authors XI Vs. The Lord’s Taverners XI The Quintessential English Cricket Match Picture the scene. A bright, late summer Sunday afternoon. One of the world’s oldest wandering teams. The most picturesque cricket ground in the land. And, a golden opportunity for you to cross the rope. Join two teams of authors, celebrities and former pros, captained respectively by the award-winning writer, Sebastian Faulks CBE, and 2005 Ashes winner, Matthew Hoggard MBE.* A day of lavish entertainment, fine dining, fundraising, and wonderful cricket. Sponsorship and table bookings available. The Authors Cricket Club – 1891 – 1912 & 2012 - Present You’d be forgiven for dismissing The Authors Cricket Club as the stuff of Victorian myth. Yet, not only is it an illustrative thread in cricket’s rich cultural tapestry, it’s alive and kicking in the 21st century.
In 2018, the stand-out match on the fixture list comes on 9th September, when some of today’s leading authors face Lord’s Taverners XI in a fundraiser to be held at The Cricket Ground on the Wormsley Estate in Stokenchurch. Lovingly created by John Paul Getty II, an Italian-American philanthropist, who fell in love with the game after he was introduced to it by Mick Jagger, the Buckinghamshire ground is a sight to behold. Wormsley Estate Cricket Ground With its manicured square and outfield exact replicas of The Oval and a timeless Tudor revival pavilion, this beautiful venue is the very model of an English cricket ground. The perfect summer setting. The Day Itself
Over the course of 21 years, after its first ever game in 1891, The Authors XI featured such literary giants as Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, P.G. Wodehouse and J.M. Barrie.
We get the ball rolling with a drinks reception on the lawn at midday sharp followed by a sumptuous lunch. That gives us ample opportunity to raise valuable funds for The Lord’s Taverners and Chance to Shine, two admirable cricketing charities.
And, those celebrated writers, among a host of others, spent their summers wandering the length and breadth of the country, taking on teams of all descriptions. Village greens were abuzz.
The focus then shifts back to the pitch for a 2.45pm toss. It’s a 30 over game, with the first exchanges beginning at 3pm, so sit back, relax, and enjoy the fun.
Cricketing Renaissance But, despite the team disbanding as we approached The Great War, it was reformed a full century later in 2012 and continues to play a full programme of games each season.

PROTECTING YOUR AUTOMOTIVE INVESTMENT… How a Leicestershire business has carved out a niche for vehicle owners looking to combine luxury Car Care treatment with cutting edge modern paint protection. After a whirlwind 18 months since opening the doors to their exclusive Studio, Reep Midlands have continued to establish themselves as the go to for Supercar and Luxury Vehicle owners looking to add and maintain a high quality paint finish to their vehicle. There are very few mid to high level cars that do not have some form of paint enhancement with the self-healing paint protection film now being the industry standard to prevent stonechips and road rash. There is already a sense that Reep Midlands owners Pri Chauhan and Pete George have expansion plans firmly in the schedule for 2018 despite already being one of the largest car care studios in the UK. “We are able to work on 4-5 vehicle simultaneously without compromising quality or service, so the obvious next step is to reduce waiting times significantly by expanding the workshop and recruiting more talented personnel”. Our Studio is a true one stop shop, whether it is arranging paintwork, body repairs (through our trusted partners) or even alloy wheel refurbishment, it can all be arranged in house and managed onsite here whilst your vehicle is with us. Pete and Pri’s burgeoning reputation is further reinforced by close associations with various regional Franchised Dealers including various Ferrari, Lamborghini, Bentley, BMW, Land Rover, Porsche and Mercedes amongst others. If you are lucky enough to buy a new car from a dealer, chances are if you have specified a high quality coating or paint protection film from your Salesperson, and it would have been the team at Reep Midlands who have been assigned this enhancement to be completed in their Studio before a final handover to you back at the Dealer. More and more dealers are also choosing to hand over cars at Reep Midlands, fully utilising the on site facilities and handover suites. The entire customer journey from purchase to collection can now be fully realised at Reep Midlands. “We are the final part of the sales puzzle and a handover at Reep Midlands allows you to fully see your vehicle in its absolute glory”.
Pete added “The full concierge service is a facility we offer our customers to help minimise interruption of busy lifestyles. Whether it is liaising with the Dealers directly on your behalf, inspecting the vehicle paintwork or arranging a covered trailer transporter to safely pick up and deliver your vehicle anywhere in the UK/Europe – we take the sting out of the buying process, leaving you with only the worry of a shiny new toy to play with and the bad weather! Two new strings to the Reep Midlands now include full manufacturer approved installation of CAT 5/6 tracking devices to vehicles to protect against the ever-increasing theft of high value vehicles on a daily basis. Almost all vehicles can be fitted with trackers, whether classic, motorsport or even motorhomes. Most can be fitted whilst you wait, leaving you to enjoy the onsite hospitality and facilities in the meantime. The high-profile addition to the list of Reep Midlands services is a full vehicle vinyl wrapping. If you want to cosmetically enhance/transform your car colour or add graphics/livery, a full in-house design and supply service is available and professionally installed by the leading Vinyl Team. The popularity of cosmetic changes to a vehicle to freshen it up can add glamour and give your vehicle a bespoke feel. It is more and more popular with all generations. Simple touches and details go a long way – even changing mirrors and spoilers add a new dimension. There is no doubt that the addition of Reep Midlands to the luxury car care market is offering Midlands based customers (and further afield) a more localised way of caring for their dream.

BERLIN
With more and more Brits choosing short city breaks rather than long getaways, European cities are overwhelming favourites for those wanting to get some sun while cutting out the lengthy plane journey. But what options do holidaymakers have when it comes to a city break? Let Scarlett London take you through a few of her top picks for this summer:
@Scarlett_London
With the second biggest population on the continent, Berlin is a city that is full of history and culture, with artists like David Bowie having lived in and been inspired by the capital. The 20th century alone saw a revolution staged, the Nazi party set up their HQ, before the city was bombed and eventually divided into two for decades. As a result, there’s tonnes to see, whether it be walking along remnants of the Berlin Wall, checking out Checkpoint Charlie, or visiting the rooms where key events in WWII were planned. Despite the city’s size, its main attractions are pretty easy to visit either on foot, bike or by using the public transport system. If you’re a party animal, you’ll love Berlin too, as it puts New York to shame, as a 24/7 city. Locals, too, have a laidback, friendly style, and the capital’s many nationalities have resulted in a melting pot of cultures from around the globe, creating an international village of experiences to be had, be it culinary or entertainment-based.
@scarlettlondon @ScarlettLondonBlog
COPENHAGEN Copenhagen has become one of the fastest growing metropolitan destinations in Europe, with cruise passengers and tourists flocking to Denmark to see what its capital has to offer. What they find is a city full of colourful fashion and design, and one of the world’s most dedicated bicycle cultures – Copenhagen actually has more bikes than people!
KRAKÓW Poland is a country with tonnes of history, much of which Kraków has been at the centre of as the nation’s second largest city, and one of its oldest. Regarded as one of the most beautiful cities on the continent, the summer gives an average high of 24 o in July, while visiting in December can see highs of just 2 o! A city of extremes, then, but Kraków’s attractions include the Wawel Royal Castle, striking 14th century, St. Mary’s Basilica, and the massive 1O-acre, Main Market Square.
Major landmarks for the city include The Little Mermaid statue on the Langelinie promenade, an iconic statue based on the fairytale of the same name, by Danish author Hans Christian Andersen, the Tivoli Gardens and the Amalienbord and Christiansborg palaces. If you enjoy quaint scenery with beautiful buildings, and a relaxed atmosphere, Copenhagen may be the break for you.
Outside the city centre is the Wieliczka Salt Mine, an incredible feat of human engineering that needs to be seen to be believed. An unmissable, poignant experience is the Oskar Schindler factory, immortalised in Steven Spielberg’s Oscar award-winning film, Schindler’s List. Touring the museum and finding out more about the story is a must for any visitor to Kraków.
PRAGUE
LISBON
The capital of the Czech Republic has long been a destination for couples and groups to enjoy a weekend away. Prague is a wonderful, vibrant city to escape to, with plenty to do. The Louvre might have the classics, but Prague’s art galleries feature fantastic bohemian art to admire, complementing the city’s architecture perfectly. Between intimidating Gothic towers and decadent delights of small, intimate cafes and bars, there’s something here for everyone.
Despite being situated on the Atlantic coast, continental Europe’s westernmost capital enjoys a Mediterranean climate, with average temperatures of 15o between December and February, and 25o from June to September. Lisbon has a lot of attractions for a city break destination, be it the glorious river, the vibrant buildings, or glistening sunshine.
In bars you’ll find one of the city’s main attractions – beer! Known for being incredibly tasty and great value for money, more and more bars and microbreweries have popped up in the city over the last few years, giving connoisseurs fresh blends to try. Aside from that, if you feel a little bit overwhelmed by the throngs of tourists in the city, venture down one of Prague’s maze of cobbled streets. With hidden delights around every corner, each one will bring you an authentic Prague experience.
If you’re a seafood lover, ensure you consume copious amounts of fresh, grilled sardines, from one of the many seafood bars, as it is the local delicacy. If a spot of extreme sport is your thing, then you’ll want to take part in a surf tour to one of the local beaches, Estoril and Cascais which are a short train journey away, or if you just want a bargain, the antique shops and flea markets offer all kinds of trinkets and clothing. When it comes to accommodation, there are a number of fantastic options, with elegant suites at fine hotels such as the Principe Real, suited for all budgets.

Depending on the cruise you could explore tourist hot spots and shopping areas in Melbourne and Sydney, as well as taking a trip to Australia’s iconic, Ayers rock, or even explore the movie magic of The Lord of the Rings franchise by seeing where it was filmed in Wellington. Whatever you plan on doing, the wonders that Australia and New Zealand behold are truly unique.
The world is full of a wide range of travel opportunities from countries with stunning sun-kissed beaches, cities with beautiful architecture and locations filled with amazing natural wonders, but with so many fantastic destinations to choose from, it can be hard to decide where to start. A cruise allows you to take in several breath-taking locations in one trip. The benefits of a cruise also include the versatility that they offer. Whether you want to sail away for a week, a month or even embark on a 100-day cruise that travels around the world, there is something for everyone. Here at Aspirational Magazine we have compiled a list of some of the best cruise locations on offer in 2018 which can make for the perfect summer getaway:
D ISCOVER WHAT EUROPE HAS TO OF F E R You don’t need to go to the other side of the world to enjoy a fantastic cruise. From Scandinavia to the Greek Isles, Europe has a whole host of incredible destinations to enjoy. If you prefer you can even stay within the UK with a tour of the British Isles. Cruises can take you anywhere within the continent from the ancient cities of Rome and Athens, which are still home to their original historic architecture, to Mediterranean locations in Spain, Portugal and Greece. These European cruises can also be combined with ones that head further afield, such as to the USA. A lot of European cruises hit many major capital cities on their routes, making adding more pins to your map easy.

Everyone is well aware of the huge theme parks and resorts that the USA can offer, and Disneyworld and Universal Studios are both fantastic attractions. North America’s ports include the likes of San Francisco, Los Angeles, Seattle and Vancouver and all have plenty to see and do. Why not take a trip to the Golden Gate bridge on your stop off in San Francisco? Or the Space Needle that dominates the Seattle skyline? Housing Market Update
We are now experiencing high demand at the bottom and middle end of the market and it is fair to say that this is where most of the growth is in property prices, principally due to the lack of stock currently coming onto the market. As regards to the top end of the market, the picture is a little different. Whilst there is far less property to choose from, buyers are more cautious. Many of our buyers and sellers own businesses and are therefore much more cautious about the prospect for the economy after Brexit and the impact that this may have on their businesses. It is also fair to say that stamp duty, which has been a major brake on the market in the south east, has also affected the middle/upper end of the market.
James Warne of Bentons
We ask the Experts The British love property. Our love affair with our homes shows little evidence of subsiding as latest indicators are that the demand for homes is not being met by the supply of new property to the market. For the latest on the housing market, particularly the top end of the market, who better to ask than the area’s best known Estate Agent, James Warne of Bentons, who handles some of the area’s finest homes. “The trouble with statistics”, James explained, “is that they rarely apply to individual sectors of the market, individual areas or house types and it is therefore very difficult for the general public to get a real feel for what is going on where they live. It is true that there is a general lack of supply in the market and this has had the effect of creating modest growth in property prices over the last few years. The market has now recovered after some 8 years or so after the credit crunch to price levels that were previously enjoyed at the beginning of 2007. In London and the south east, prices have certainly pushed through the previous boom levels.
Abbot Close Kirby Muxloe

The good news is that if you are selling a luxury home in Leicestershire or Nottinghamshire, there is far less competition than if you had a property of the same value in the south east and London and due to the strength of the economy pre-Brexit, there are buyers around. My experience is that prices in the top end of the market now at around the same level as 2007 or just below, and realism is the key to selling in the current market. For buyers, this is an outstanding time to purchase as many of the homes on the market in this price sector are either at the figures which are lower than the clients paid for them 10 years ago. This makes a property in the middle/upper end of the market exceptional value for money and the locations of such as Charnwood Forest and the more popular villages are as popular as ever. My advice, as always, if you are thinking of selling is to get really well qualified advice from Agents who have a track record for dealing with properties in this price sector. Unfortunately, there are many new Agents desperate for a slice of this market and it is therefore easy to become the victim of “overvaluing to impress”. The effect of this is that a property can go on the market at the wrong price, quickly go stale, which sometimes means that you actually achieve a lower price in the long run. Over valuing is still the biggest barrier to selling in the current climate”. As ever, James and his team are available for free marketing advice if you are considering moving at 01664 563892 or by emailing sales@bentons.co.uk. The pages in this month’s magazine carry a selection of the properties that Bentons have to offer.

NEW KID ON THE BLOCK PPL PRS sets up home in Leicester
Each year the music licensing industry is responsible for generating millions of pounds for musicians, songwriters, performers and composers, ensuring they are rewarded for their talent and able to continue to create and share their music with the world. Helping to support artists is music licensing service, PPL PRS who has set up home in the heart of the East Midlands; in Leicester city centre. PPL PRS began trading in early 2018 and was formed as part of a joint venture between two giants of the music rights management world – PPL, who represent performers and record companies and PRS for Music who look after songwriters, composers and music publishers. Choosing to make the East Midland’s their home, PPL PRS selected Leicester as its new base thanks to the city’s accessibility to the rest of the UK. Occupying the iconic former Leicester Mercury newspaper building, in the heart of the city’s cultural quarter, the twostorey office space has been completely overhauled to reflect a forward-thinking business such as PPL PRS. Inspired by the music industry it represents, the new HQ is home to 200-strong staff and features song lyric-inspired artwork as well as meeting spaces named ‘the live lounge’, ‘pop’, and ‘reggae’.
90 | ASPIRATIONAL.UK.COM
PPL PRS’ Managing Director, Suzanne Smith, explains why setting up base in Leicester was a good decision for the company: “Leicester is a vibrant city and was a strong choice when we were looking at possible HQ locations. Our new headquarters is a fantastic blend of heritage architecture and contemporary design which has enabled us to create a space we are proud to call home.” A new addition to the region’s business landscape… This latest addition to Leicester’s business community has been developed from a need to make music licensing more straightforward for businesses. Through their TheMusicLicence, PPL PRS give businesses a single point of contact, making it easier than ever before for organisations of all sizes and types to legally play and perform music, as Suzanne explains: “We are very excited to now offer customers of both PPL and PRS for Music a more streamlined approach for licensing their businesses to play and perform music. With the launch of TheMusicLicence we are providing one licence, one invoice and one contact, enabling companies and organisations to enhance their customer and employee experience by playing music in their premises.”
PPL PRS Ltd , Mercury Place, St. George’s Street, Leicester, LE1 1QG

Thanks to streaming and downloads, the music industry has undergone seismic change in recent years and the launch of PPL PRS is reflective of how the industry is adapting to change and the needs of music lovers.

On the fast track to success
“I am thrilled to have brought on Janine Edwards Wealth Management as our official wealth management provider. The business has grown significantly in recent years and it is impossible to ignore their dedication to furthering the success of businesses like mine. Janine herself brings a contemporary approach to what can be a dry topic – she makes wealth management fun and most importantly of all, she cuts out the jargon to create the perfect balance between accessibility and providing quality advice.”
people at the right events. She has already lined us up to attend many exciting networking events in the coming months in order to help us grow our contacts and clientele. “Janine has a remarkable number of contacts within both her immediate industry, and also within the automotive industry and so she blends with our business perfectly. By introducing us to more networking events and giving Supercar Driver an added boost, I have great confidence that we will have a long-standing relationship with Janine.”
Adam continued: “Not only is Janine working with us as a wealth management adviser, she is also an extremely well-connected individual and is perfectly placed to put us in front of the right
Believing supercars are made to be raced, not just admired, Supercar Driver is a members-only car club which encourages supercar owners to put the pedal to the metal and hit the road in their luxury vehicles. Members of the club are encouraged to enjoy their supercar by attending the many events that Supercar Driver organise each year, and also receive a quarterly magazine designed and written in-house. Supercar Driver was founded by car enthusiast, Adam Thorby, in 2009. Nine years on and the business is now the country’s leading members club for supercar owners. Currently, the business brings a wide range of driving opportunities to its 750 country-wide exclusive members, who drive the likes of Ferrari, Porsche, Lamborghini, McLaren, and Maserati. Speaking of the business and the different types of events the company runs, Adam said: “The events we organise are tailored to get the owners of these beautiful cars out and about enjoying all aspects of them. To ensure that all of our members want to get behind the wheel of their supercars, we organise a wide array of events throughout the year, from early morning drives and international tours, to charity events and track days.” Perhaps the greatest sign of how the company has grown the event side of its business, is through its annual Supercar Secret Meet event as Adam explained: “Our annual Supercar Secret Meet event is our most prominent. It marks the first meet of the season and it gets everyone excited for the year of events ahead. When we first established the secret meet some five years ago we were seeing 50 cars attend, this year that number has grown to 315 cars showcasing at the event!” Supercar Driver hasn’t just sparked the attention of supercar owners though, another testament to their growing presence in the automotive industry is the sponsorship they have gained. In 2014 the company brought in their first and biggest sponsorship deal with world-renowned tyre manufacturer, Michelin. Officially associated with such a prolific sponsor, what has followed is a string of sponsors wanting to back the club, including: Reep, JBR Capital, First Point Insurance and XL Responsive Vehicle Leasing
96 | ASPIRATIONAL.UK.COM
Adam is proud of the company’s growing turnover and highprofile sponsorship deals but actually recognises something more humble as their biggest achievement to date, as he explained: “Of course, we are extremely proud of our company growth and are thrilled to be smashing our targets, but we see our greatest achievement being our charity fundraising efforts. We are a small business of just six members of staff and yet to-date have raised some £100,000 for the children’s hospice, Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice.” With ambitions clearly fixed on growing the business – which has already increased its members by 75% in just two years – Adam recognised a need to have a wealth management service on board to help take the business to the next level in its journey. That’s where Janine Edwards Wealth Management, a Principal Partner Practice of St. James’s Place Wealth Management stepped in. Specialising in corporate financial advice and protection, aspects of exit strategy planning for business owners, investment planning, retirement planning and tax and estate planning, Janine has more than 30 years’ experience working in the wealth management industry. Supercar Driver’s work with Janine is just beginning, but Adam is excited to be working with Janine and confident where her expertise can take the business to the next level:

Going from strength to strength, the ambitious Leicester based team is now made up of 10 experienced recruitment individuals and is set to ascend further within their existing sectors, by recruiting likeminded people. Eileen Richards is immensely active within the local business community and has been appointed as a Board Director for the East Midlands Chamber and a Co-Chair for Enterprising Women. Eileen Richards and her team make my life easy, and that’s got to be a huge tick in the box for any busy professional looking to recruit! Eileen has successfully sourced a number of new Tigers employees across a multitude of departments and she and her team have taken the time to understand our culture, goals and challenges to make sure we see the right people for us. When we recruit, it’s not just for the role in the here and now, but also with succession planning in mind, the people that Eileen has placed with us have more than proved a return on our initial investment and continue to grow with the business. I would recommend Eileen Richard Recruitment in a heartbeat. Andrea Pinchen
There are a vast number of companies and individuals who refer to themselves as a “recruitment agency”, but add no value to our employee resourcing. Eileen Richards, however, provides a service that is second to none, they invest time and resources in getting to understand the company, its culture and its nuances. Eileen Richards will not present a candidate to Bloor Homes until they have been thoroughly interviewed and vetted and they are satisfied that they are absolutely the right candidate for the role, the team and the company. This saves Bloor Homes a huge amount of time and resources, knowing that we are only being presented with the strongest candidates in the marketplace. During the interview process we always ask candidates about their experience of the recruitment process to date. Every candidate, without exception have nothing but praise and positive feedback about their experience with Eileen Richards.

HOW DO YOU CHOOSE A GREAT VENUE? Finding the right venue can be difficult; are they going to look after me and our guests? Are there hidden costs? Will the food be nice? Can they accommodate specialist dietary needs? The list can go on. So, here is our guide to what you should look for in your next venue... Spaces – There are huge benefits in taking your team offsite; an opportunity to get those creative juices flowing and bring out those big new ideas from your team with a change of environment. We recommend you look for inspirational spaces that will enable your team to be inspired and innovative. Catering – Ensure that a venue has exceptional catering on offer. You want your visitors to have an experience not just a ‘lunch’ an outstanding venue will offer regular themes and on-trend items that will make all your guests’ mouths water. All-inclusive packages – Ensure your venue doesn’t charge for additional things you may need on the day. There aren’t many out there but it’s an important thing to consider, you don’t want to watch how much coffee your guests drink just in case you get another bill. Equipment – Check that your venue has the most up-to-date equipment, there’s nothing worse than being faced with a flappy screen and a portable projector. Your chosen venue should offer state-of-the-art technology and upgrade it regularly. AV support – Check if your venue offers onsite technicians, imagine arriving and your sound won’t work or your presentation won’t load. Many don’t have expertise onsite so if you need it, it could be expensive.
Attention to detail – What does the venue smell like? How comfortable is the furniture? Is it immaculately clean? What is the food hygiene score? Are the carpets in good repair? There is a huge list of things you could look to for the detail. An outstanding venue will have looked after all the detail and more… Do a show round – Make sure you go and see the venue wherever possible, you will get a feel for how much they want your business, what they can offer you and what your guests will experience when they arrive by walking the guest journey. It will also give you a chance to check out their attention to detail! There’s a lot to think about when looking for the right place to hold your event. All of this and much more is available at Leicester Conferences, the outstanding multi-award winning venue portfolio from the University of Leicester. With four venues to choose from, College Court, Stamford Court, Oadby Village and Leicester Campus, you will be spoilt for choice. Our incredibly passionate team has been delivering excellence for over 50 years and after a huge £20m investment over the past five years and with another £200,000 planned to be invested this year, our facilities offer the very best in hospitality. Contact us today on 0116 223 1680 or email info@leicesterconferences.co.uk to speak to our dedicated and experienced sales team who would love to hear more about your future events!
Wi-Fi – A modern venue should offer complimentary Wi-Fi access, and ensure you check its bandwidth, snail pace Wi-Fi is no good nowadays, and ask if guests have to register to use it as this could affect your event timings if people are having to ‘register and log in’. Transport links – Check the accessibility of your chosen venue. Are they located on public transport routes? Is the road network accessible and the venue easy to find? Is there onsite complimentary car parking? Ensuring your guests arrive as stress free as possible will make all the difference to their day. Testimonials – Ensure that your venue can offer you some feedback from previous clients or ask them what their repeat client base is, this will quickly tell you how highly regarded they are. Also check TripAdvisor as the honest review site will give you a great idea at the quality of your chosen venue.

State-of-the-art digital and media centre, under construction in 2018.
CHAMPIONS (UK) plc
- A BREAK FROM THE NORM Wherever you want to take your brand, the East Midlands’ leading full-service brand agency, Champions (UK) plc, does things differently. They find a better way to deliver the results you seek. As an 80-strong, family-run agency, they know it’s all about relationships and they understand the importance of your long-term objectives. And they know that success has to be on your terms. However, you weigh that up, whatever your chosen metric, that’s where their focus lies.
End User Focus
They get to know you, your brand and your precise aims to create and roll out bespoke strategies that take you where you want to go.
With a unique structure of 10 in-house departments, they have the architecture and the knowledge to create and execute complex and consistent cross-channel campaigns that target the right audiences.
To do that they’ve developed a unique architecture. They don’t limit themselves, or what they deliver on your behalf, to a niche.
Rather than focusing on individual business sectors, they have always thought first about the end user.
Instead, they give you access to ten fields of expertise, all working together in perfect harmony – The Perfect 10.
They have developed their expertise along those lines, tailoring both the messaging and the platforms they use to reach out in the most effective way.
Rather than engage several agencies, each with a different interpretation of your brief and each with its own margin, you get joined-up thinking and just one chest to poke.
So, they treat each campaign on its own merits and use the most suitable range of promotional tools.
With a full spectrum of expertise at Champions’ disposal, you benefit from the services you need – simple as that.
Champions (UK) plc owns that journey. They turn an initial awareness of who you are and what you do into a positive decision to purchase your products or services.
Instead, they recently celebrated the granting of planning permission on a project that will transform an on-site barn into a state-of-the-art digital and media centre.
To stimulate that decision, they take your target audience through a series of further touchpoints, each of which builds understanding, confidence and trust.
With the ground scheduled to be broken in the middle of 2018, they’re equipping themselves to help yet more client brands take full advantage of the ongoing digital revolution.
The team creates consistent and clear messages that reinforce the values you represent and the benefits you deliver.
Champions (UK) plc has already developed a broad palette of capabilities. With a team of over 90 set to push past the 100 mark, their offering will only become even more comprehensive.
They increase the frequency and broaden the range of those touchpoints, raising the probability of your customers encountering them. Growing Capabilities Since they were first established in 2003, Champions has looked to the long-term. Whether that’s building enduring client relationships or reinvesting in the agency team and infrastructure, there’s always an eye on the future. They use the same far-sighted vision that has kept dozens of clients loyal for over a decade to build on their expertise and technical capabilities - and expand the range of services they deliver.
/+Championsukplcagency 112 | ASPIRATIONAL.UK.COM
From the very first touchpoint, the moment your potential customers first encounter your brand, they embark on a journey.
Look at the digital space. It may have been just two short years since they doubled the footprint of their headquarters on the Leicestershire/Nottinghamshire border but they’re not content to stand still.
Plotting a Course
Key to delivering in this nuanced way is their ability to understand a wide range of audiences. That and their expertise in devising and delivering campaigns and strategies focused on the end user.

“Loudness, crowded places… things which are unfamiliar to him.” And he may show his distress, often drawing disapproving stares. People don’t understand. When even the simplest, everyday activities can become an ordeal, it can be stressful, and lead to avoidance, isolation and lack of confidence, even depression. The family first visited Rainbows when Jayden was two, following a referral by the portage worker who was supporting the toddler. At first it was difficult for Sarah to leave her son in anybody’s care, she admits. “You become overprotective. I found it difficult to trust anyone to look after him. But now I have every confidence in the care staff here – they are brilliant! And Rainbows has become like a breath of fresh air – it allows me to breathe!” Rainbows typically offers families 16 days’ respite every year, with some families choosing to stay in rooms directly above the hospice while their youngsters are cared for, free to come and go as they wish. They can spend as much, or as little time with their children as would like, knowing they will be cared for by the highest level of care specialists. All family members are encouraged to enjoy the facilities too during their stay, including a range of play activities for siblings, therapies and a hydro pool. “Jayden loves the pool!”
Every birthday’s a blessing… At first glance you might easily think Jayden Raven was like any other child. The fair-haired little boy with blue eyes smiles a lot. Like any other youngster he has a sense of mischief. But five-year-old Jayden is not like other children. He is, in fact, often very poorly. And every birthday, every Christmas with her son is a milestone for which his mother, Sarah, is grateful. “When Jayden was born he seemed a healthy baby. But as the months passed he didn’t progress like other babies. And at 10 months old he still wasn’t sitting up,” she explains. At first, experts told her not to worry. But somehow Sarah (35) knew it wasn’t usual. Something with her little boy just ‘didn’t seem right’. In addition to being late with crawling and sitting up, he also seemed to have problems digesting his food. And there were frequent sleepless nights. It was an unexpected hospital visit that was to have a profound effect on the Nottingham family, which includes Dad Philip (43), older son Owen (13) and Lilly (two). A bloodshot eye sustained as Jayden’s face brushed against the carpeted floor while he was attempting to crawl - and a dash to accident and emergency. Sarah explains: “When Jayden was examined at hospital they were concerned. At first they thought he might have water on the brain… or even that I had shaken him violently. They kept him in overnight. But it wasn’t until a paediatrician tried to sit him up and he fell forward that they decided to examine him thoroughly.” That led to further tests and finally, a diagnosis. Jayden had Sanfilippo Syndrome, a rare genetic condition, also described as MPS IIIA. Doctors told Sarah her son
would never walk, never talk – and that his life expectancy was 12 years. And there is no cure. “It hit me like a hammer blow. Suddenly my worst fears were confirmed. My whole world was shattered,” she says. “I had wanted answers, but had not expected that.” Jayden had just turned one. Children with the condition cannot produce a certain enzyme needed to break down sugars, which leads to digestive problems. Clear symptoms often only appear after the first year of life, with a deterioration in learning ability often occurring between ages two and six years. Eating and digesting food is a constant problem, says Sarah. Increasing behavioural problems are also consistent with the condition, along with progressive physical deterioration, including a stiffness in the joints. The care required for Jayden can be intense – despite unfaltering hands-on support from her mother, Wendy - and has, says Sarah, placed an additional strain on the entire family. Yet, despite the difficulties, which include sight and hearing problems and a fragile immune system, which means every illness can potentially be life-threatening, Jayden is a remarkably smiley and happy child. “Jayden is like a ray of sunshine,” says Sarah. “He can be brilliant, very loving and affectionate, full of kisses and cuddles. But he can also be a handful… a full-time worry.” Mealtimes can be intense and prolonged, due to the limits on Jayden’s diet and the length of time he needs to eat. Even everyday things like going shopping can become a major challenge. “Jayden does not like a lot of things,” she says.
“
Sarah smiles:
Rainbows has made all the difference, not just for Jayden, but the whole family. It is a magical place. The care for Jayden is second to none – and when we come we can relax and step away from the everyday stresses we normally have. To be honest, when I am at the Rainbows I feel able to relax in a way that I can’t anywhere else!
”
Here she says the family feels accepted. Normal. Loved. “We’ve even met families here at Rainbows with children who have the same condition as Jayden. It makes us feel we are not alone. And the support from Rainbows is incredible. Even when we are not staying, we have regular visits and phone calls from family support staff.” Jayden took his first steps at the age of three years, against all expectation. And he is still walking, though it may be difficult and sometimes painful for him. As Sarah knows, there are many trials ahead and every small step is a minor miracle; every happy day with Jayden a blessing. And Rainbows helps make those days possible, she says. Jayden’s future is uncertain, she knows. But, she adds: “He has come to love Rainbows, as we all have. It is a haven; a place of comfort and support. I try not to think of the future. It scares me. But whatever it holds, I do know it is a little bit brighter with Rainbows.”
England cricketers bowl into Rainbows with donation The England Women’s Cricket Team braved arctic conditions to bowl into Rainbows Hospice for Children and Young People – and present a four-figure donation. The team first visited the Loughborough-based centre, which offers support to youngsters with life-limiting conditions, before setting off for their successful 2017 World Cup campaign. And squad members subsequently decided to raise cash for the charity by running 100km on Christmas Day. Captain Heather Knight said: “The England Women’s Cricket Team are supporters of Rainbows hospice. We have seen first-hand the fantastic work the hospice does for children, young people and their families. On Christmas Day our squad collectively ran the distance to raise money and awareness for Rainbows - a cause we all feel connected to.” The Cricketers’ seasonal run raised more than £3,000 for the charity. The team also added its tour fines money. “It is tradition that on every tour we go on we collect money from players and staff when they do or say something silly - we are very glad we can now put our stupidity to good use!” added Heather. David Strudley, Rainbows CEO, commented: “We are bowled over by the ongoing support from Heather and the team – we can’t thank them enough and look forward to welcoming them again when their schedule allows.”

Childline helping young people to speak out about discrimination
Young people often contact Childline when they have nowhere else to turn
Founder of the national child protection charity, Childline, Dame Esther Rantzen DBE recently hosted an event at the NSPCC Training Centre in Leicester. The fundraising lunch, named ‘One Unforgettable Day’, sought to raise money for Childline as the demand for more counsellors on the phones continues to be an increasing concern and focus for the charity.
Barbara Elsey, and Julie Norman, Miranda Hall, Dame Esther Rantzen, Veronica Larksworthy and Bianca Dally from the NSPCC Rutland Committee
Dame Esther made an appeal at the event sharing her unhappiness with the number of children and young people hanging up or logging off during Childline’s peak hours. She also shared her hopes that with increased funds of £500,000 more staff could be hired resulting in the charity being able to answer tens of thousands more calls from young people each year.
Barbara Elsey, and Julie Norman, Miranda Hall, Dame Esther Rantzen, Veronica Larksworthy and Bianca Dally from the NSPCC Rutland Committee.
The event also featured some eye-opening statistics about the charity, including the fact that in the years 2016/17 Childline’s Nottingham base were contacted 29,214 times from children and teens - a 3,736 call increase from the previous year.
Childline counsellors are there for young people 24/7
The extremely poignant event was a great success and was attended by charity supporters including The X Factor winner Sam Bailey who, a mother of three herself, was keen to get involved with a charity that supports the lives and wellbeing of children and young people.

With an initial strong getaway, Derek looked to be cruising into the final, before disaster struck 250m from the finish when a torn hamstring saw him fall to the ground in pain.
