We have really grown and flourished in London and are building great partnerships across the city, including with The Gherkin and the Dorchester Collection. The magazine, along with its sister publication, Inspirational Birmingham, are created and published by Champions (UK) plc, a family-run business headed up by my father and CEO, John and my brother, Managing Director, Matthew. At Champions (UK) plc we are a leading full-service agency that offers a comprehensive suite of services including creative, marketing, advertising, media, publishing, digital, PR, events, web design and talent management. Pulling together such a high-quality, diverse magazine takes plenty of hard work and dedication and it is great to see the many in-house specialisms pull together to deliver a magazine that is so well received by its readership. This edition sees us in something of a reflective mood as we look back over the legacy of the 2012 London Olympic Games and 140 years of the Wimbledon Tennis Championship. Also on a sporting theme, we take a look at ten years of the new Wembley Stadium and cover the popular golfing event, the European Senior Masters. Delve a little deeper and you’ll discover our gift guides for both men and women, packed with stunning garments, it is sure to inspire your summer shopping! Rounding up the magazine are the social pages which showcase a selection of the high-profile and often glamorous events that the Champions (UK) plc team host, organise and attend. As you will see, it’s been a busy year with a wide range of events already under our belt including a vintage ball and attending the fundraising dinner for the Rwanda Cricket Stadium Foundation. Whatever plans you have for the summer, be sure to relax and take time to read your copy of Inspirational London!

WHY WE’RE ALL GOING
FOR EMMA
A quick glance through any gossip magazine, tabloid newspaper or online news site and it’s clear to see, this is the year of America’s allsinging, all-dancing golden girl – Emma Stone. Fresh from her Oscar win where she scooped the Academy Award for ‘Best Actress’ in a Leading Role for her part in La La Land, her freshfaced beauty, fiery red hair (she’s actually a natural blond), and girl nextdoor charm make it easy to see why audiences around the world have fallen for Emma.

Emma’s movie back catalogue reads well, featuring a mix of wellreceived teen movies, such as Superbad and Easy A along with weightier roles in The Help and Birdman. Born Emily Jean Stone in Arizona on 6 November 1988, Emma’s appetite for acting was whetted when, as a youth, she appeared in a series of amateur productions, leading to a decision aged 15 to pursue a career in acting.

Moving from her native Arizona to Los Angeles with her mother (she finished her education being taught at home), she set about making her dreams a reality. Her instinct paid off and Emma’s big break came in 2004 when she won the role of Laurie Partridge in a talent/reality show called In Search of the Partridge Family. While the role was perhaps not the leap forward she might have hoped for, it did lead on to other TV roles. Emma’s big movie break came three years later, in 2007, in the teen hit – Superbad, the story of a group of geeky high-school friends looking to buy alcohol for a party. The Judd Apatow comedy was a hit with audiences, and while Stone’s role was not leading, she still shone. While she has received critical acclaim in the past (she received her first Academy Award nomination for her supporting actress role in 2015 for Birdman), it is 2017’s La La Land that has sent critics and movie-fans alike ecstatic for Emma. With Oscar buzz surrounding the film from the outset, it is no surprise that the film has won 11 BAFTAS, including ‘Best Film’ and ‘Best Actress’ for Emma, seven Golden Globes, again a best actress award for Emma, and 12 Critics Choice nominations. She also won the award for ‘Outstanding Performance by a Female in a Leading Role’ at the Screen Actors Guild Awards and the film earned 14 Academy Award nominations, winning six Oscars on the night, including ‘Best Song’ and ‘Best Director’. Along with awards, the movie has also raked in the big bucks at the Box Office, taking $300 million to date, not bad for a film made for, the relatively modest sum, in movie terms, of just $30 million. Charting the romance of Stone’s Mia, a budding actress and Sebastian, an ambitious jazz pianist, played by Ryan Gosling, as they fall in love, you’ll be forgiven for thinking so far, so Hollywood rom-com, however the twist in this bittersweet tale is that the pair, sing and dance their way through the story. Speaking to CBS News on what drew her to the role, she said, “I loved the idea that it was set in modern day, that the touches felt very modern, but the feeling of the film was this anamorphic sort of Cinemascope celebration of the musicals that Damien (director), Ryan and I, and many, many people, have fallen in love with through the decades. The combination of it was definitely a tricky balance, but [also] what made it so inspiring.” Playing a struggling actress facing rejection after rejection, is something Emma, like all young actors desperate to make their mark can relate to. She recently described playing the role of Mia as a “cathartic experience” referring to her years auditioning for parts she didn’t get.

In an interview with ENews, Emma remembers, “I wasn’t getting called back for anything when I first moved to LA and so, they just stopped sending me out,” she recalled. “There was a large swath of time where nobody wanted me to come in and that feeling was actually worse than any of the, you know, the initial auditions and being kind of rejected.” These days Emma is very much in demand and those who might have doubted her ability to take on such a role as in La La Land were soon silenced. Training which took three months, paid off with her on-screen performance described as “luminous” by Variety and with The Guardian saying Emma “has never been better, her huge doe eyes radiating wit and intelligence when they’re not filling with tears.” Pairing Emma with Hollywood heavyweight, Ryan Gosling, La La Land isn’t the first time the duo have been cast together. With a fizzing on-screen chemistry, it seems the pairing of Stone and Gosling is box office gold. First working together on 2011’s Crazy, Stupid, Love, a romantic comedy that pitted Gosling’s womanising Jacob against Emma’s Hannah, the film raked in $142.9 million at the global box office and saw the pair go on to star together twice more in 2013’s Gangster Squad and La La Land. While their on-screen chemistry is palpable, off-screen the pair have never been romantically linked. In fact, Emma is very protective of her private life, saying in 2015 to the Wall Street Journal, “See, I never talk about this stuff for this exact reason—because it’s all so speculative and baseless. Once you start responding—once you’re like, ‘No, that’s not true’—then they’re like, ‘Well, if we push enough, we’ll get a comment, so let’s see what else we can make up.’ I understand the interest in it completely because I’ve had it, too. But it’s so special to me that it never feels good to talk about, so I just continually don’t talk about it.”

INSPIRATIONAL.LONDON
Her most high-profile romance was with actor, Andrew Garfield whom she met on the set of The Amazing Spider-man. Playing the role of Gwen Stacy, Emma and Andrew (who was in the titular role), played on-screen love interests and love in real-life soon followed, with the pair dating from 2011 to 2015. While roles in the black comedy Birdman, where she played a former addict and the family movie, The Croods where she was the voice of cave girl, Eep, demonstrate Emma’s versatility, it is arguably her comedic roles which have earned her the greatest number of fans. Her breakthrough role, playing Olive Penderghast in 2010’s teen-comedy, Easy A, was a showcase for what fans have come to adore about Emma; relentless cheerfulness, eagerness and just enough geekiness to make her natural beauty disarming. It is hardly surprising that Emma excels in comedy roles, she has credited comedies such as Steve Martin’s, The Jerk, 1977’s Annie Hall, black comedy, Beetlejuice and family comedy Hocus Pocus as the films that made her want to be an actress While Emma is riding high during awards season, her star is set to continue to rise with a number of films slated for release in 2017/18. Up-coming films include the muchanticipated Cruella – Disney’s 101 Dalmatians spin-off, The Favourite, which is set in the reign of Queen Anne, The Croods 2 and Battle of the Sexes, a biography of tennis champ Billie Jean King.

BEAUTY, HEALTH AND LIFESTYLE
South Africa has a long history of wine production, dating back hundreds of years. In many ways, South Africa offers a ‘perfect storm’ when it comes to grape growing. With a climate that is similar to that of the Mediterranean, days are long and warm with springtime frosts rare. What’s more, the ‘Cape Doctor’, a strong wind current, brings gale force winds to the area’s wine regions; helping to limit mildew growth and prevent fungal grape disease from attaching to the vines. With such optimal conditions, it is little wonder that South African wines are well-respected and a popular choice with wine lovers around the world who rate the crisp and fresh, creamy and honeyed taste that they offer. It is estimated that South Africa exports around 450 million litres of wine each year, making it the 9th largest wine producer in the world. Adding to this number is regional wine producer, Sumaridge Estate Wines. Located in the Upper Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, around 12km from central Hermanus, a region widely recognised for its excellent reputation for producing Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs, Sumaridge Estate is owned by Simon Turner and his wife Holly Bellingham.
Simon and Holly’s vineyard adventure began in 2008 when they purchased the estate. They now divide their time between South Africa and their Suffolk home from where they spearhead the estate’s marketing, sales and client liaison. Describing what makes the vineyard so special, Simon said: “The translation of Hemel-en-Aarde means heaven and earth and never was a place so aptly named! The sun-drenched vineyard is framed by two mountain ranges, creating the perfect panorama, add to this everything we have on offer at the estate and it really is a special place.” Simon and Holly are keen to share their vineyard experience, firstly through the outstanding wine the grapes from the land produce. All grapes are hand harvested and sorted with only the best of the bunch used. Once sorted, the grapes are cooled, de-stemmed and crushed, before the work of wine production begins. Wines produced at the estate include the 2014 Chardonnay, which is matured in 100% Bourgogne oak barrels and cellared in bottle for a year before release. The Chardonnay vineyards are situated to make the most of the estate’s air stream and the result is a lively yet delicately fruity wine, which has notes of lime, quince and citrus blossom.

Another key wine for the estate is the Pinot Noir which offers the body of a classic Pinot along with rich, darker fruit notes. Texture-wise, Sumaridge’s Pinot Noir is balanced and silky, making it the perfect accompaniment to a range of meat dishes. Other wines available from this award-winning wine estate includes, Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot, Syrah, Pinotage, Maritimus, The Wayfarer and Epitome. Such is the appeal of Sumaridge Estate Wines, they have supplied to royal residencies including Clarence House and St James’s Palace as well as to Downing Street. The couple also share their passion for the region by making the estate accessible to travellers and guests and for those looking for a base in the region there is The Lodge. A stylish, five-bedroomed space, The Lodge is a former farm cottage transformed into a luxury, guest retreat. Along with its stunning location, The Lodge boasts spacious rooms and an open plan living and dining room which is perfect for making the most of the outdoors. Simon adds: “Along with its contemporary décor and walls filled with a collection of artworks all sourced from local artists, guests will also find a well-stocked wine fridge!”
To find out more about booking The Lodge email lorraine. sumaridge@gmail.com. Along with settling in for a break at The Lodge, guests can enjoy a visit to The Tasting Room. Open daily from 11am to 5pm, visitors have the opportunity to sample the complete Sumaridge Wines collection. Of course, all that tasting can work up an appetite which is where The Dining Room comes in. Offering an exciting range of tasting platters, it is the perfect way to sit back, relax and enjoy delicious food. With a keen sense of corporate social responsibility, Simon and Holly also supply wines to charities and 3rd sector markets, as well as offer use of The Lodge as a lot in charity auctions. William Roache MBE hits the sea with Princess Cruises
It’s no secret that a cruise is the perfect choice for avid travellers looking to experience what other parts of the world have to offer in the space of a week or more. While the experiences guests have on land, once the ship is docked for the day, create special moments that are cherished forever, Princess Cruises has emulated such an experience on the water, too. With a significant amount of time spent at sea, a cruise ship needs to have it all. Thankfully, Princess Cruises does! The cruise line sails to destinations such as Mexico, Japan, Hawaii, Australia and South America as well as providing the opportunity to travel the world with their World Cruise which visits 40 destinations. However, it doesn’t matter where in the world you are travelling to each cruise promises the best in food, drink, activities and entertainment, something Coronation Street’s William Roache MBE found out when he recently travelled with the cruise line. William Roache MBE, who is best-known for his role as Ken Barlow in Britain’s longest-running soap, Coronation Street, was invited onto the Crown Princess Cruise Ship to provide the entertainment for an evening. Boarding the ship in Gibraltar he journeyed back with it its docks in Southampton. The 113,561 tonne Crown Princess accommodates over 3,000 guests, has 19 decks, 900 balconies, a three-storey atrium, a height of 195 feet and a span of some 952 feet. A magnitude that William couldn’t quite fathom when he saw it in front of him “I have never been on a cruise ship like it before. When we got on board I thought that with over 3,000 holidaygoers on board it would be cramped, but the ship was so well organised that I was never aware of large groups of people.”
28 |
INSPIRATIONAL.LONDON
Perplexed by how the magnificent vessel didn’t topple, William and his adult children were invited, by the Captain no less, for a private viewing of the command room – The Bridge. “I had to air my concern about a boat of this magnitude tipping over in the wind, after a comparison between the ship and a fishing float, my mind was at ease. On my visit to the bridge I perhaps went in a bit naïve, expecting to see a steering wheel. The wheel that was controlling the boat, in comparison, was no bigger than you use on a racing game in the arcade! That astounded me I must admit.” Never wanting their guests to be at a loss for what to do whilst on board, day or night, the Crown Princess houses incredible facilities including eight restaurants, – William even hailed the pizzeria as the best Italian restaurant he had ever eaten at. Also on offer are high end shops including Chanel and Calvin Klein, a gym, casino and the iconic Princess Theatre. There is also a designated area called the Sanctuary where guests, who want to escape from the hubbub of the happenings on board, can go to read and relax in peace and quiet. Somewhere William found great a retreat. Come the evening the ship comes alive with lively entertainment which William spoke extremely highly of, “The entertainment was unbelievable, I was able to watch La La Land, a film I had wanted to see for a long while, under the stars during an open-air screening on the top deck. I was also invited to watch a show in the Princess Theatre, which is a spectacular addition to the ship.” It was in the Princess Theatre that William took to the stage, in front of a vast audience, to speak about his time on the street from the very first episode in 1960 to the present day. “The audience were wonderful – the turnout was more than I had expected, as we had experienced some really rough
weather earlier in the day. I think some of the audience felt at ease knowing I was feeling just as sea-sick as they were! But, we all overcame it together and had an enjoyable evening.” William engaged the audience with his tales from the cobbles: “Of course, life on the set of Coronation Street dominated the evening with many of the audience members wanting to know more about my current storyline. There is something rather enjoyable about others making wild guesses about ‘who tried to kill Ken’, when I am standing on stage knowing the answer they all crave.” William rounded up his review of the trip by praising it highly, confidently stating he would do something similar again, when he can fit it into his busy schedule that is! It was Champions After Dinner Speakers Agency who secured William his position on the cruise ship, and as entertainment partners of Princess Cruises, have done the same for a number of other well-known celebrities. The line-up over the next few months on board include: • Beverley Callard • Harry Redknapp • Graham Gooch OBE • James Cosmo • John Virgo • Terry Butcher • Paul Burrell • Mike Gatting OBE • Sherrie Hewson • Edwina Jones

COUNTDOWN TO THE
If you are newly engaged, you will no doubt be brimming with ideas and excitement about your big day. With so much to look forward to, planning your wedding can be a time of great fun and creativity, however, it can also be a source of anxiety, with worries about who to invite, finding the perfect dress and making a speech, topping the worry lists of brides and grooms.

THE DAY BEFORE
Now is the time to make some crucial decisions about your wedding, the most important of these being the budget as this will determine the number of guests you will invite and the location your wedding will be held. Once this is decided, shortlist a range of venues that offer the style of wedding you want and make appointments to view. Great venues often get booked up many months in advance so if you see a place you love, book it. If you plan to get married separately from your chosen venue, don’t forget to book your civil/ church ceremony as well. You may also want to consider hiring a wedding planner at this point. Bringing a professional in at the start of the process ensures they can fully share your vision.
Now is the time to start thinking about details such as booking the photographer, deciding on menu choices and choosing entertainment. Weddings can be long days so it is important to have activities dotted throughout the day to keep guests entertained and energised. Entertainment ideas include classical musicians, live bands, tribute acts, DJs, comedians, circus acts and even living statues. For a complete source of quality wedding entertainment, call Champions Music & Entertainment, a division of leading brand agency Champions (UK) plc, on 01509 85 29 27. With less than a year to go it is also time to choose that all-important dress! Wedding dress shopping can often be more time consuming than brides think so allow plenty of time to choose and take people with you whose opinion you trust.
Around about now is the time to finalise the guest list and send out the wedding invitations. Your wedding invites are the first-time guests will see anything relating to your wedding theme, so be sure to have a clear vision in mind of the type of wedding you hope to have. Key wedding trends in 2017 include luxury industrial, (think warehouses softened with fairy lights and candles for an edgy but romantic look), and the still popular, rustic chic, which offers plenty of flexibility in terms of both design and budget. Around now you should also be deciding upon the groom’s outfit and any bridesmaid dresses as well as making decisions on details such as flowers and wedding transport.
Not booked your honeymoon yet? Do so now! After the roller-coaster of emotions planning a wedding brings, taking a break afterwards is the perfect antidote to all that stress. With just 12 weeks until the big day, now is also a great time to have a practice hair and make-up run with your chosen supplier to be sure you get the look you want. Also, take time to go underwear shopping and have those final dress/ suit fittings as well as buy the wedding rings. If your wedding is more formal you will probably want to work out a seating plan which you can share with your venue.
With so much time spent planning and organising, you need a break and now is the perfect time to head off on those stag and hen dos! If you are still waiting on RSVPs start chasing people now, your venue will need to know final numbers soon.
Chances are the nerves will be setting in by now, take away some of your concerns by placing a call with your suppliers to confirm final details for the day. Depending on when you travel, you may also need to start preparing for your honeymoon by shopping for holiday clothes and travel essentials.
At this point the hard work is done, so use the day as an opportunity to spend time with friends and family and try to relax! Good luck!

1.
WHISKY ROYALÉ YOU WILL NEED: 25ml of Scotch whisky | apple Schnapps (or clear apple juice) | ginger ale | sliced green apple | crushed ice
METHOD: Half-fill a pre-chilled Champagne flute with crushed ice. Pour in the Scotch whisky and then add a splash of apple Schnapps – or apple juice if preferred. Fill the rest of the flute with a helping of ginger ale. To garnish place a slice of green apple into the drink.
2.
MANGO PEACH FIZZ YOU WILL NEED: 1 ripe mango |1 large ripe peach | ½ cup un-sweetened mango, peach, or orange juice | 1 tbsp. sugar | peach Schnapps | Champagne or Prosecco
METHOD:
3.
Add the diced mango, peach and the fruit juice into a blender and blend until it becomes a purée. Add the sugar to the purée to take away the sharpness. Fill a tall glass with ice cubes and pour 2 tbsp of the purée and peach schnapps into each glass and top with the Champagne or Prosecco – stir well before serving. To garnish place a slice of green apple into the drink.
A PITCHER OF MINT MARGARITA YOU WILL NEED: Chopped mint leaves | ½ tsp. large grained salt | 4 cups of crushed ice | 1½ cups goodquality tequila | 1 cup freshly squeezed lime juice (roughly 8 limes) | 1 cup Triple Sec liqueur
METHOD: In the bottom of a large (2-quart) pitcher, crush together the mint leaves and salt, pressing with the back of a wooden spoon or a rolling pin. Add the ice, tequila, lime juice, and Triple Sec, stirring vigorously. Serve in margarita glasses or short glasses with a salted rim. To create the traditional salted rim on a margarita, moisten the rim of each glass with water and then dip the glass rim in a shallow plate of salt.

METHOD:
5.
Mash together strawberries and pineapple at the bottom of a cocktail shaker – be careful not to overdo it, as you don’t want to create a purée. Add the ice, pineapple syrup, lime juice, syrup and white rum. Give it a good shake. Serve in tall, frosted glasses and garnish with a strawberry on the rim of the glass.
JUG OF POMEGRANATE MOKITO MOCKTAIL YOU WILL NEED: 3 tbsp pomegranate seeds | Bunched mint | 2 limes quartered, plus slices to garnish | 1 pomegranate juice | 500ml lemonade
METHOD: Divide the pomegranate seeds and place them in an ice cube tray, top up with water and freeze overnight. Put aside half of the mint for serving, and sprinkle the rest into a large jug with the lime quarters. Crush the mint and lime to free the flavours. Add the pomegranate juice and lemonade. Put the pomegranate ice cubes in each glass, then strain the liquid over the glass with small sieve making sure no pips or pulp pass through into the drink.

Tours are available for people of all abilities and interests, whether it is learning more about the grizzly underbelly of the city or to see the filming locations of your favourite movies, there is something for everyone. Depending on the type of tour, you may need to book in advance; be sure to check where the tour departs and ends and wear comfortable shoes that are practical for walking. While some tours can be completed with just a map or app, many organised tours come complete with a knowledgeable guide. These experts in their field are bursting with information, interesting details and enthusiasm for the city and bring landmarks and areas to life in a way you’ll never have experienced before.
Here at Inspirational London we we have shortlisted some of our favourite walking tours… A WALK ON THE WILD SIDE… A British institution, London’s pubs have a long and diverse history and, when you know what to look for, can offer a glimpse into a time gone by. From haunted public houses to murders and other spine-chilling events, take a walk on the wild side (and enjoy a cheeky drink or two) on a pub walk through the city. THE EYE-OPENER While this one is likely to be popular with tourists, even longtime city-dwellers can learn something on a city visitor tour. Taking in iconic landmarks such as Tower Bridge and St Paul’s Cathedral, walkers can download the city visitor app or pick up a free map from the City Information Centre, Tower Bridge, Guildhall or other attractions and churches throughout the city. THE BIG SCREEN With the help of an informative guide, you can learn more about the locations around the city that have been used in
some of the most iconic movies. A wide range of tours are available which include iconic locations from Harry Potter, Sherlock Holmes, Notting Hill and of course, James Bond. EAT ON THE RUN A great way to experience any city is through its food, which is why a food tour is a perfect way to fall in love with London once again. Tours on offer include a walk around the East End, taking in the atmosphere and grub of this slice of London, along with a tour of Soho where walkers can sample modern, British cuisine. While the Great British weather isn’t always so reliable, some tours do take place in indoor locations, offering respite from the rain, so whatever the season, strap on your boots and get ready to hit the town. A wide range of tours are available and vary in price, with some walks free to do and others costing around £14 per person (concessions vary). BEAUTY, HEALTH AND LIFESTYLE
Glitz, glamour and rock ‘n’ roll: a history of one of the quirkiest streets in London An integral part of London’s status as one of the classiest capitals on the planet, the style and swagger of Savile Row has been established since 1735. Having served royalty (Prince Phillip), heads of state (Sir Winston Churchill) and Hollywood stars (Jude Law) over the years, the street is world famous for the quality of its suits – and was the birthplace of the fine tailoring term ‘bespoke’! Alongside the tailoring it’s currently known for, the street has had plenty of other uses over the years... First built as part of the Burlington Estate, architectural designs were created and implemented under a four-man team of Colen Campbell, Henry Flitcroft, Daniel Garrett and William Kent. Strong influences came in the form of Burlington’s interpretation of Palladian architecture, informally known as ‘Burlington’, which had a major influence on English architecture in the 16th century. Initial occupants of the street were military officers, their wives and later, politicians including William Pitt the Younger. 40 |
INSPIRATIONAL.LONDON
It took until 1803, till the first signs of what was to come arrived in the form of tailors from the nearby Cork Street. The affluent area quickly attracted dealers specialising in luxury goods, with the creator of the tuxedo, Henry Poole pitching up and starting to trade in 1846, opening an entrance at 37 Savile Row from his late father’s tailoring premises at 4 Old Burlington Street. An unexpected use of 1 Savile Row, was the presence of the Royal Geographical Society from 1870 to 1912. It was a different time to the one we live in now, one of development and exploration, with long-haul British expeditions to Asia, Africa and even the South Pole, all planned from the street’s headquarters. The society’s purpose remains today in the 21st century, with these trips serving in the advancement of geographical science. Having purchased Lowther Lodge in 1912, the society moved there from Savile Row in 1913 and remain there to this day. Having survived multiple wars, the street itself has retained its iconic look over the years, with many of the buildings currently listed under the National Heritage List for England.
The late 60s and early 70s saw a musical revolution on the street, with legendary band The Beatles moving their Apple Corps company into 3 Savile Row in 1968. Let It Be was recorded in the basement studio, before another prestigious moment happened just a year later; The Beatles’ final live performance occurred on the roof of the building in January 1969. Known as the ‘rooftop concert’, the performance stopped traffic and attracted a large crowd. 1969 was significant in the tailoring world too, as ‘Nutters of Savile Row’ modernised the style and approach of many of the traditional tailors situated on the street. The first shop to pioneer ‘open windows’, the bold displays were representative of the colourful times people were living in. Nutters were tailors with a difference, dressing an entire social spectrum of society, with customers ranging from the Duke of Bedford, to Mayor of San Francisco Willie Brown, to Mick and Bianca Jagger. Other events of cultural significance dressed by Nutters were Jack Nicholson’s Joker costume in 1989’s ‘Batman’ film, as well as three of the four Beatles on the iconic ‘Abbey Road’ album cover.
This period of modernisation had slowed by the early 1990s, with increasing rents and criticism from the likes of Georgio Armani that Savile Row was ‘falling behind the times’, with the number of tailors hitting 19 in 2006, down from 40 in the 1950s. Something had to be done, and the Savile Row Bespoke Association was founded in 2004 to protect and develop bespoke tailoring as practised, with members required to put at least 50 hours of hand labour into each two-piece suit. This was as much to emphasise the area’s dedication to the bespoke suit, and ward off any interest from commercial developments in the area. The Association, to date, works with Westminster Council to protect the street’s tailoring heritage. Now, trade has come back to Savile Row, with 44 tailors in the area by 2014, and with many tailors experiencing high levels of success and expanding their services across the globe, the quality and class that has always been associated with the name Savile Row, remains today. BEAUTY, HEALTH AND LIFESTYLE
40 YEARS SINCE WE LOST THE KING OF ROCK ‘N’ ROLL With a career that ended all too soon, Elvis’ legacy still lives on some 40 years following his death. With his movie star good looks, seemingly effortless vocals and infectious good humour, to many it may have seemed inevitable that Elvis’ star would always rise. However, Elvis’ start in life was less than auspicious. Born in 1935, Elvis’ birth was difficult, (his twin brother Jessie was stillborn), and his early years were one of poverty as his family, parents Vernon and Gladys Presley, tried to make ends meet in Deep South Mississippi. Despite his tough start, Elvis had ambition – one fuelled by his passion for music. A devout Catholic, Elvis was inspired by the sounds of his childhood – Gospel. Developing a deep appreciation for music within the church and making some of his earliest performances there, even at this young age, Elvis felt at home performing. As a teen, now living in Memphis, Elvis could regularly be found on downtown Beale Street, a place renowned for its diverse range of clubs and restaurants. So dynamic and diverse was Beale Street that it was influential in developing many new genres, including the then burgeoning R&B scene. Exposed to so many new influences and sounds, it was only a matter of time before Elvis discovered his sound and in 1953 as an 18-year-old fresh out of High School, made his first recording - a $4 dollar, two-track recording intended as a gift for his mother. It is unlikely that Elvis, or indeed anyone, could have predicted the worldwide phenomena that would be born out of this loving gift, but from this point on, his life would be irrevocably changed forever. During the recording at the famous Sun Studios, producer Sam Phillips heard Elvis’ voice and set up an impromptu meeting between local bass player, Bill Black, and guitarist, Scotty Moore. The team reportedly covered numerous songs and riffed throughout the day, however nothing the group produced was good enough for Sam. It wasn’t until the team took a break and Elvis absent-mindedly played a sped-up version of That’s All Right that the record label realised they had a star in the making. This sparked Sun Records to sign him immediately, it was a massive break for Elvis as the label also managed the likes of Johnny Cash and Roy Orbison. Becoming aware of Elvis’ talent, artist manager, Colonel Tom Parker was made his personal manager. In just two years Elvis and Colonel Tom Parker achieved a top 40 single together with Heartbreak Hotel. Becoming an international sensation

INSPIRATIONAL.LONDON
and selling over one billion records worldwide, Elvis became the best-selling individual artist of all time. All his albums achieved either gold, platinum, or multi-platinum status. He was also immensely popular with critics - achieving 14 Grammy nominations in his lifetime, of which he won three leading him to receive the Grammy Lifetime Achievement award at just 33. In 1987, the American Music Awards posthumously granted Elvis the Award of Merit. As well as this, Elvis performed in 31 feature length movies and two touring documentaries all of which were well received. 1964’s Viva Las Vegas earnt $11.33 million at the box office, around $87.71 million today, making it Elvis’ highest grossing film. With his career on the up, it was something of a surprise when in 1958 Elvis was drafted into the U.S. army for his National Service. After spending six months in boot camp, Elvis was deployed in Germany for 18 months; still receiving mountains of fan mail. His time in Germany would prove to be formative for the young Elvis, who was still only in his early 20s. Not only did his mother, to whom he was extremely close, pass away – an event that those close to him claim had a significant impact on him, but he also met his future wife. Elvis first met Priscilla Beaulieu – the daughter of a U.S. Air Force Officer - at a party in his home, eight years later the pair would be married. While in many ways Elvis’ life was the stuff of dreams, behind the scenes he was descending in to what would become a nightmare. By the mid-70s Elvis was reportedly addicted to many prescription drugs, something that inevitably took its toll on his marriage. In 1973, Elvis and Priscilla were divorced, however, the pair remained firm friends, even holding hands at the divorce proceedings. The next few years of Elvis’ life saw him doing what he did best – performing. Touring almost constantly, Elvis sold out venues wherever he went and added a third Grammy to his collection. Sadly however, Elvis’ life was to be cut short all too soon when, on 16 August 1977, aged just 42, Elvis passed away from reported heart failure. Despite the intervening 40 years since his untimely death, Elvis’ estate still earns millions each year from music sales, licencing and royalties. His Graceland Mansion in Memphis has been turned into one of the most popular tourist attractions in the U.S. giving fans young and old a place to celebrate the legacy of The King of Rock ‘n’ Roll.
8 HIP-SWIVELLING ELVIS FACTS: 1. Elvis purchased Graceland Mansion in 1957 for $102,500, which is around $875,500 today, he lived in that house until his death in 1977. Since the 14-acre property has been turned into an entertainment complex, it is said to be worth around $55 million today. 2. Elvis never toured outside North America. It is rumoured that his manager, Colonel Tom Parker, was an illegal immigrant. He allegedly turned down many lucrative international deals for fear that he would be denied entry to the U.S. upon his return. 3. Milton Berle, host of Texaco Star Theatre, advised Elvis to perform without his guitar, reportedly saying, “Let ‘em see you son.” Elvis’ movements on-stage caused outrage in the States, causing the tabloids to dub him Elvis the Pelvis. 4. Elvis’ 1960 hit, It’s Now or Never, inspired a prisoner to pursue a career in music upon his release. The prisoner was Barry White, serving a four-month sentence for stealing tyres. 5. It is estimated that there were about 170 Elvis tribute acts in 1977, today it is around 250,000 making him one of the most impersonated artists in the world. 6. Elvis is the only artist to be inducted into five Halls of Fame: Rock n’ Roll, Country, Gospel, Rockabilly, and R&B. 7. Elvis had a pet chimp called Scatter, which developed a taste for Scotch and bourbon. 8. His last words were, “OK, I won’t,” when he assured Ginger Alden, his girlfriend, that he wouldn’t fall asleep reading in the bathroom.

King Cole k o o b g n o S
Mr Unforgettable… With his amazing skill on the piano and effortlessly smooth voice, Nat King Cole held the world’s ear for three decades and his legacy of poignant, sentimental, playful tunes continues today.
Born Nathaniel Adams Coles in Montgomery, Alabama on 17 March 1919, Cole had humble origins. Like so many families in the Deep South at the time, the Cole family were very poor and struggled to make ends meet. Despite the everyday battle to survive, music was important to the Coles and Nat was taught to play the organ and piano from the age of four by his mother. Nat’s natural musical ability was evident even from this early age and while his first brush with music was with Gospel, it was just a matter of time before this young boy from the Yellowhammer State was influenced by the emerging New Orleans jazz sound. Nat’s musical career began when, in 1936, after dropping out of school aged just fifteen, he found a position as a pianist in Shuffle Along – a jazz review. While enjoying some success, Shuffle Along soon came to an end, but by this time Nat had been bitten by the performing bug. Following a period playing solo in the bars and clubs of California, Nat formed what was to become the King Cole Trio. The year was 1937. The King Cole Trio went on to record four albums from 1943 to 1949, including hits such as Sweet Lorraine, I’m in the Mood for Love and If I Had You. Nat’s smooth baritone has been enjoyed by audiences for 80 years and in 2017 music lovers can see Nat’s biggest hits brought to life once again through the sweet, soul stylings of Britain’s very own Andy Abraham. Platinum-selling recording artist, Andy first caught the nation’s attention when he took part in The X Factor in 2005. Wowing 48 |

audiences each week with his soulful voice, Andy went on to finish second in the hotly contested final (a vote of just 1.2% separated first and second place!), but where he finished didn’t really matter – the nation was hooked – Andy Abraham was a star! Andy’s career has gone from strength to strength, seeing him perform around the world, record four critically acclaimed albums and embark on a successful career in musical theatre. This year marks the launch of Andy’s latest show – The Nat King Cole Songbook. With his warm, smooth voice, Andy is the perfect vocalist to take on the Nat King Cole back catalogue. Reinterpreting many of the classics, following a brief intermission, Andy will step back into the spotlight to perform a selection of upbeat soul classics. The perfect show for music fans of all ages, Andy’s new show is set to be popular with holiday villages and cruises though it makes a great addition to all kinds of gatherings, including corporate events and casino tours.

won, not one, but four awards; Best Female Artist, Best Sound & Lighting Production, Best Choreography and the ultimate accolade - Official UK No.1 Tribute Act! Nominations are now open for the awards, with 11 up for grabs including:
Even better than the real thing – welcome to the world of the tribute artist Fancy seeing Adele belt out her greatest hits? Perhaps you’d love to see Led Zepplin or catch Bruno Mars perform his catchy pop tunes? While seeing your favourite artist perform live can be an unforgettable experience, it can also be expensive and for many of us means being sat in a seat far away from the stage! Of course, there is the matter of actually getting tickets - many gigs sell out within minutes of going on sale, for example, tickets for Adele’s 2016 tour at the 13,000 capacity Glasgow SSE Hydro venue, sold out in just two minutes! If catching your favourite band or artist isn’t feasible, don’t panic, here in the UK we have many wonderful tribute artists; outstanding vocalists in their own right, who take on the persona of some of the biggest names in music. Expertly capturing the look, sound and performance of the originals, tribute artists put a great deal of hard work and attention to detail into honing their act. Aiming for perfection, they capture the essence of the originals’ performance. Keen to recognise and reward the nation’s tribute artists, The National Tribute Music Awards UK are set to once again hit Leicester’s stylish Athena venue on 5 July 2017. During the event, selected winners will perform for guests, which will include other tribute acts, celebrities and professionals from within the entertainment industry. Last year’s event was a huge success, seeing tribute acts from rock, pop and everything in between, come together for a glittering gala event. Big winners on the night included; Best Male Artist; A Vision of Elvis and Talon, a tribute to The Eagles who took home; Best Band, Best Marketing & PR and Lifetime Achievement Award. Sweeping the board on the night however, was Totally Tina - a tribute to Tina Turner, who

To find out more about the awards, including how to nominate your favourite act, visit www.nationaltributeawards.co.uk/ awards As well as the prestige that comes with being recognised as a leading tribute act, award winners will also receive a trophy and the option of using the ‘kite mark’ logo supplied by The Entertainment Agents’ Association Ltd - endorsing the performer(s) as an act of quality. Becoming a tribute artist is a serious business, with performers putting a great deal of effort, time and money into honing their act. While having a physical similarity to an artist can help, it isn’t essential, with the best tribute artists able to convince the audience they are seeing the real deal thanks to their convincing performance and attention to detail. Achieving this standard of performance doesn’t come overnight, top tribute artists spend countless hours perfecting their act, scrutinising their chosen artist’s mannerisms, stage presence and vocal patterns. Physically transforming into the chosen artist is another essential element to the act and, as every good tribute artist knows, much can be achieved with a great wig, the right costumes and stage make-up. With audiences expecting to experience something as close as possible to the real thing, spending time on getting the costumes just right is time well spent. From Sinatra’s stylish tux to Madonna’s iconic conical bra, audiences expect nothing less from their tribute act. Something many tribute artists have fun with is naming their act from fantastically funny puns to clever plays on words, such as Oasis tribute Oasish, The Antarctic Monkeys and T-Rextasy, the name must be both catchy and reflect the original. Always popular, in 2017, you can experience live music like never before by booking a tribute act for your next event; whether a party, wedding, business function or corporate event. At Champions Music & Entertainment you will find every kind of music from the reggae stylings of Bob Marley to the cool pop of Ed Sheeran.

Bring me sunshine...
Eric and Little Ern as Morecambe and Wise When it comes to comedy partnerships few can rival the impeccable timing, good natured teasing and hilarious material of Morecambe & Wise. Eric was born John Eric Bartholomew in 1926 and Ernie, Ernest Wiseman in 1925, these masters of observational comedy entertained generations through their TV & radio shows, live productions and movies. Such is their enduring appeal, that even today, for families across Britain, Christmas Day isn’t complete without the Morecambe & Wise Christmas Special – of which they made 10 consecutive shows! However, the legends of light entertainment might never have formed had the pair, then working as solo artists, not been booked to appear as separate acts at the Nottingham Empire Theatre in 1941. Not making their partnership official until 1946 (a stint of Army service prevented it), the duo set about crafting their act in front of a live stage audience. As their popularity grew, they made their TV debut in 1954 in Running Wild although it was their later shows, Two Of A Kind (1961-68), and The Morecambe & Wise Show (1968- 1983), that truly cemented their place in the nation’s hearts. In fact, they were voted the favourite entertainers of all time in a 1996 poll to mark 60 years of BBC TV. The pair made the switch to TV look remarkably easy, bringing those audience interactions they thrived on during live performances to their recorded shows (think Eric’s sideways glances into the camera). Such was the popularity of their TV shows they drew many big names including The Beatles, Dame Shirley Bassey and actress Glenda Jackson. Awarded OBEs in 1976, the partnership lasted over forty years until Eric’s death in 1984. Ernie passed away some years
later in 1999. Leaving behind a legacy that aspiring comedy acts can only dream of, the pair remain popular today with viewers missing the warmth, humour and sheer silliness they brought to light entertainment. While the originals can never be brought back, expertly capturing their look, mannerisms and humour is tribute act Eric and Little Ern. Played by Morecambe & Wise fans and professional performers, Ian Ashpitel (Ernie) and Jonty Stephen (Eric), the pair bear an uncanny resemblance to the originals and have enjoyed terrific success with their shows. Officially coming together as Eric and Ernie in 2013, though they had performed together as the double act before, the pair took their show to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe where it received rave reviews and sold-out. A tour then followed which was nominated for an Olivier Award in 2014 The pair pay close attention to the subtleties of their comedy heroes, so much so that Eric Morecambe’s family are massively supportive of the act. Defining them as the definitive Morecambe & Wise act, the pair are consummate performers that never break character.

HEAD BACK TO NATURE WITH HEAT HOLDERS
Summer brings, for most of us, a desire to be outdoors enjoying the weather and nature. The perfect way to make the most of, what could be short-lived sunny days, is to pitch-up a tent and enjoy some R&R under canvas. Camping is a great way to connect with friends and family and there are options available for campers of all levels. While experienced campers may choose to venture off the beaten track and get away from it all, those less experienced with the camping scene may prefer a campsite which provides hot showers, electric hook-ups and other facilities. Of course, while camping is about going back to basics there is no need to be uncomfortable and with our top five tips we can help elevate your camping experience from a damp drama to glamping glory! 1. Be prepared for the cold If you are camping in the UK, unfortunately, even in the height of summer, you need to prepare for cold weather. Even the warmest of days can result in chilly evenings
58 |
INSPIRATIONAL.LONDON
and a night spent freezing in a tent can be a very long night indeed! Pack a sleeping bag in a suitable tog for the temperature. Hooded or ‘mummy’ style sleeping bags are also a great choice as they prevent heat loss throughout the night, further helping to keep you snug. Other in-tent essentials to keep you warm include socks. Slipper socks such as Heat Holders’ ultimate thermal socks, which include grip pads which make moving around the tent easy and can be worn in your sleeping bag to keep you toasty all night long. 2. Choose your site wisely As with any type of holiday we all have our own ideas of what constitutes the perfect place. When it comes to campsites there are plenty of options to choose from. Aside from location, other important factors which may influence your site choice include what the on-site facilities are like, whether the site is for adults only or welcomes families and whether open fires are allowed.
3. Find your perfect tent While the weather forecast may predict week-long sunshine, when camping it pays to be prepared so investing in a tent that offers complete protection against the elements will be money well-spent should rain and wind attack.
include some ‘extras’ to make the trip as comfortable as possible. The Heat Holders range of thermal wear and accessories are perfect to pack; lightweight and taking up little space in your camping kit, they will ensure you always feel warm and comfortable. Other ways to improve your camping experience are by taking seating (inflatable sofas work well) to make evenings by the fire a little more comfortable and lighting. You can opt for battery/solar powered lights
When investing in a tent there are a few things to consider including its size. Tents are measured by the number of people they can hold, so the thing to bear in mind here is that this measurement is based purely on the number of people. It doesn’t include the luggage and equipment necessary for a camping trip. Think also about how you will use the tent. Some tents come with separate bed and living rooms – both of which can be exceptionally useful in providing space and in helping to keep everything somewhat organised. While your instinct may be to go for the biggest and best tent you can find, before you buy be sure it is not too big for the site you intend to camp in, as some sites have restrictions. Be sure also that it is easy to erect, a practice run in the garden could pay dividends and always aim to arrive at your site in daylight – putting up a tent in the dark is never easy! 4. Take something to sleep on Before you set off, your yoga mat may seem like the perfect bed for under canvas sleeping, however, after a night on it the likelihood is that you will be wishing you’d gone for the ultra-thick, deluxe air mattress your camping partner opted for. Any time of the year a good night’s sleep is important and given that while camping you are likely to be up early (there’s no black-out blinds for tents to block that early morning sun), it is essential you can snuggle down to a great night’s sleep. Sleeping options include inflatable mattresses which offer the benefit of being light and easy to pack though can be a pain to pump up, or a camp bed which is bit bulkier to transport but sees you sleeping off the floor – something many campers value. 5. Invest in some creature comforts While it is nice to experience life in the great outdoors, trying to prepare a meal over a tiny camp fire in darkness will soon wear thin. When building your camping kit

IT’S A MAN’S WORLD
FIVE YEARS...
since the 2012 London Summer Olympics It seems hard to believe that five years have passed since the London 2012 Olympics, when our capital was treated to a fortnight of pulsating sport that continues to inspire a generation. Super Saturday saw Team GB win six golds, Usain Bolt’s Olympic record confirming his status as the greatest sprinter of all time and the Mobot, which are just some of the memorable moments from the games. Crowds were treated to the greatest medal haul by Great Britain since 1908 with a total of 65, an amazing feat only superseded in Rio 2016 with 67 medals but there is no doubt that the legacy of London games lives on. With the entire city undergoing a face-lift to make sure it was ready for the Olympics; The London Stadium was built becoming the biggest multi-purpose sporting stadium in the country. The scene for many of the games’ biggest moments, as well as the spellbinding opening and closing ceremonies, the stadium will once again be opening its doors, and play host to the 2017 Anniversary Games, World Athletics Championships and World Para Athletics Championships. The Anniversary Games is an annual event which plays an important part in athletes’ sporting calendar with some of 60 |

the biggest names in athletics coming together to compete in front of over 60,000 people. Not only does it provide a platform for fans to witness the stars in action and remember the nostalgia of the Olympics, but it also forms a vital part of the 2017 IAAF Diamond League calendar. Britain’s most decorated athlete, Sir Mo Farah was catapulted to worldwide fame after his two gold medal victories in the 2012 Olympics. He has now confirmed his participation at this year’s event in what really will be a must-see for fans. Mo has also announced that this year’s Anniversary Games, which take place on 9 July, will be his final appearance at the event before he retires from track and field at the World Athletics Championships in August. Hosting three athletics events this summer, the London Stadium will also welcome the stars of the sport during the 2017 IAAF World Championships and World Para Athletics Championships. More than 3,000 athletes will descend on the capital between the 4-13 August taking part in 22 track and field disciplines. Undoubtedly, the highlight of the World Championships will come in the 100m final on Sunday 6 August where Jamaican sprint sensation Usain Bolt will race competitively for what he says is the final time. With half a million tickets put on sale for
the Championships, it is sure to be an unmissable spectacle. The world’s fastest man is bound to put on a sensational show with his larger than life personality, which has won him so many fans over the years. Usain Bolt’s incredible 100m sprint world record time of 9.58 seconds has been acknowledged with a special anniversary pricing scheme, with kids’ tickets sold at £9.58 to commemorate his achievement. Other prices nod to the various records set by British Olympic legends Colin Jackson, Jonathan Edwards and Sally Gunnell. Kids were further acknowledged with a nationwide competition where children were asked to create a mascot for both the World Championships and Para Athletics Championships. Working alongside CBBC show Blue Peter, legendary Olympic and Paralympic athletes Dame Jessica Ennis-Hill and Richard Whitehead MBE, challenged 6-15 year olds to use their imagination and create a fun, creative and original mascot that will be used throughout the games. Not only will they get to see their creation used at the Championships they will receive a VIP tour of the Olympic Park and tickets for them and their family and, of course, a coveted Blue Peter badge!
With the World Para Athletics Championships taking place the following week, it gives fans a chance to see the best disabled athletes in the flesh including Jonnie Peacock, Richard Whitehead and Kadeena Cox. It will also mark the first time ever that both competitions have taken place in the same city. Since the Olympics five years ago, the state-of-the-art stadium has undergone some exciting renovations. Improvements include a new roof, improved spectator facilities including bigger food and drink outlets and a flexible seating system which allows fans to get closer to their favourite athletes. The biggest sporting competition of the year, the World Championships marks the showpiece event in the athletics calendar, and with the biggest names in the sport competing it is sure to be an occasion to be remembered for all involved.

IT’S A MAN’S WORLD
An Olympic Tale ...that has never been forgotten Prior to the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games, then 26-yearold Team GB sprinter Derek Redmond was in the form of his life. With this year marking 25 years since the Games, Inspirational London looks back on the event that changed the Olympian’s life forever. American Quincy Watts was Derek’s main competition for gold in the 400m, which he began with a bang, posting the fastest time of the first round. He also won his quarter-final and was looking good through the heats with plenty left in the tank. Derek was one of the most promising medal prospects Great Britain had, and as the gun went in the semi, he felt a third British record was within touching distance. It started promisingly, with a trademark fast start from the blocks: “Moving into the back straight I genuinely felt I was going quicker than ever. Suddenly I heard a funny pop and, thinking it was crowd noise, told myself to concentrate. Three or four strides later, I knew it was nothing of the sort; I hit the deck in searing pain, thinking ‘why me?’, ‘why now?’” Derek suffered a badly torn hamstring, but within seconds, he was back on his feet, chasing the pack. “I was convinced I could catch the others, despite the pain. There was no way I was giving up on my dream, so crazily, I hobbled after them. By the time, I’d got to the final bend, I looked over to see they had all finished.” What followed was to become the stuff of sporting legend. As Derek ploughed on in tears, the 65,000 capacity crowd, recognising his ‘never-say-die’ commitment, roared him on. Upon entering the final straight, his father Jim, evaded the security cordon and suddenly appeared at his side. “Today he’d have been wrestled to the ground by stewards but he somehow smuggled himself onto the track, helped me back into Lane 5 and supported me almost up to the line. I was inconsolable in the medical room, but my Father was an absolute rock. We had to leave separately, unfortunately, and I had to run the media gauntlet alone until a two-and-ahalf-hour press conference the next day, where again he was fantastic.” The incident is remembered for summing up the values and spirit of what it takes to be an Olympian. In 2012, viewers of the US TV channel, NBC, voted it their third greatest Olympic moment ever and the 44th 62 |

President of the United States, Barack Obama referenced it as an example of the triumph of the human spirit. “Really, the worst thing for me was not missing out on a possible medal but not knowing how fast I could have gone. My coach was predicting I’d dip under 44 seconds, maybe down to 43.8 - we’ll never know but I felt the best I ever did that day.” 23 years later, Iwan Thomas’ British record remains 44.36. By persevering during the semifinal, Derek aggravated the injury so much his hamstring had detached from the bone. Surgery after surgery followed, but rehabilitation proved difficult to overcome. Such was the severity of the injury, Derek went under the knife a total of seven times in just 18 months. In 1994, his surgeon told him to “get a real job as you’ll never compete for your country again!” Unsurprisingly, these words served only as motivation because Derek knew he wasn’t done yet. Before too long though, Derek was forced into early retirement from athletics, and instead turned towards other sporting disciplines he was keen on. He played professional basketball for the Birmingham Bullets and England, before narrowly missing out on a cap for the England Rugby Sevens team and even a stint in motorcycling, providing confirmation, if it was ever needed, that Derek’s sporting star was shining bright. 25 years on from that fateful night in Barcelona, Derek Redmond will be forever known for his part in one of the most heart-warming moments in Olympic history.

TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR Come on you SPVRS
When building a new sporting stadium, excitement among the fans of the club is guaranteed, but how do you engage with the wider premium market? In anticipation of their new stadium, Tottenham Hotspur looked to use cutting-edge technology to deliver an unrivalled marketing experience. An experience that put fans and potential buyers in their seats at the new stadium using augmented and virtual reality technology. Known as the Stadium Project Virtual Reality Suite (SPVRS) the technology has helped the Club deliver outstanding results in terms of premium sales while revolutionising the visitor experience and setting a new benchmark for premium offerings in sports and entertainment. From its Lilywhite House headquarters, overlooking the stadium construction site, the Club is providing guests with a chance to explore the wide range of premium areas before the stadium is built through an immersive 360-degree virtual reality experience, augmented reality iPad app and Oculus Rift tour.
Why has SPVRS been so successful? • Seeing is believing – while the new stadium construction is there for all to see, the virtual reality experience gives fans their first ever look behind the scenes of the finished article • Changing perceptions – SPVRS features an immersive dome, touch screens, tablets, VR goggles, OLED displays, and AR apps providing an extremely high standard of quality perfectly aligned with the new stadium • Technology built around the sales process – the Tottenham Hotspur sales team is trained to take guests through a consultative sales experience incorporating the advanced technological elements, thus enhancing the sales process • Professional –SPVRS provides a professional sales platform which mirrors the new stadium in terms of the innovation and ground breaking technology. Much of the technology can also be used on a one-to-one basis off site or ‘on the road’ • Shareability – the level of client referral has been unprecedented with ‘word of mouth’ resulting in further guests visiting to enjoy the unique SPVRS experience. A popular highlight of the experience is an Augmented Reality photo opportunity with a First Team player that can be shared on social media When completed, Tottenham Hotspur’s new stadium will become London’s largest capacity football club ground and will feature a retractable grass field for Tottenham Hotspur home fixtures with an artificial surface underneath that will be multiuse and capable of hosting NFL matches, concerts and other major events.
“We have tried to get people as close to being a Premier League footballer or an NFL star as you possibly can be without actually lacing up a pair of boots.” Andy O’Sullivan, Tottenham Hotspur Director of Hospitality
With bespoke locker rooms and media facilities, the stadium will become the first purpose-built NFL venue outside of the US and host a minimum of two regular season matches per year. Roger Goodell, Commissioner, NFL, said: ‘We are committed to hosting NFL games in world-class venues and are excited to partner with Tottenham Hotspur to play games at their future stadium. We share a vision and commitment to creating the best experience for our teams, fans and the local community.’ You can be there! IT’S A MAN’S WORLD
10 YEARS OF THE NEW WEMBLEY STADIUM It’s amazing to think that the re-built Wembley Stadium has been around for a decade this year. On 24 March 2007, England U21s and Italy U21s opened the ground, with the first professional event at the stadium.
Even during the initial teething stages of the new stadium, there were plenty of mutterings about its suitability to live up to its billing as a quality venue. However, Wembley Stadium has truly become the go-to venue for the entire country. The stadium has welcomed some of the biggest names in sport and showbiz performing on the famous turf. It is and always will be the home of English football, with annual games including the Emirates FA Cup final, the EFL Cup final, the FA Community Shield, as well as all home internationals taking place there. Other sports to have graced the turf include the NFL International Series, bringing regular season NFL games to the UK for the first time ever. In 2015 the Rugby World Cup brought two games to Wembley, and Rugby League’s Challenge Cup final is a wellattended annual event. Carl Frochs and George Groves’ 2014 boxing rematch created a post-war British attendance record for boxing. Even motor racing has taken place at the hallowed ground with the Race of Champions meet seeing top drivers

like Michael Schumacher, Sebastian Vettel and Jenson Button all taking to the asphalt to thrill fans. Wembley has also played host to music concerts from the likes of Beyoncé, Bruce Springsteen, Coldplay and U2, playing to crowds of up to 90,000 people. The exclusive membership service, Club Wembley, was introduced with the re-built stadium 10 years ago and has played a massive part in the Wembley Stadium’s awakening. A membership is the only way to guarantee VIP seats for a full range of events, with club members owning seats on the private tier of the stadium for an average of 10 games per season and getting first access to tickets and hospitality for all concerts and events. With a dedicated concourse for VIP guests, featuring everything from fine dining to gourmet burgers and Champagne bars, there’s no better way to enjoy the action off the pitch. To commemorate 10 years of Club Wembley, the experience is being upgraded for 2017, with a three-season membership option. There is still the opportunity to join the last season of the current membership, and move seamlessly into the new programme until 2019. With flexible pricing and several membership options, this is the time to take your place in Wembley’s history.
2017 also marks the launch of the exclusive 120 Club which offers the ultimate sports membership to a select group of just 120 members and their guests. The very special club will combine the finest hospitality, with the best seats in the house, alongside many other benefits. June is chocked full of music, with Manchester’s finest The Stone Roses and the legendary Jeff Lynne’s ELO both playing a night under the arch. Global pop sensation, Adele, is also set to play four lung-bursting sell-out shows in the latter half of the month. Autumn sees the England national team take centre stage with fixtures against Slovakia and Slovenia, while the razzmatazz of the NFL returns to London, with Wembley staging the Baltimore Ravens at the Jacksonville Jaguars and the New Orleans Saints versus the Miami Dolphins. Since its initial build in the 1920’s, Wembley has seen some incredible moments in sporting and pop culture history, here are just a few of the all-time greatest moments the famed stadium has seen. 1. 1923 – ‘White Horse’ FA Cup Final – the first ever match to take place at what was known as the ‘Empire Stadium’, took place in April 1923 between Bolton Wanderers and West Ham United in front of a whopping 200,000 spectators 2. 1948 - London Olympics – a recovering post-war London hosted the Games which became known as the ‘Austerity Games’. 3. 1963 - Henry Cooper vs Cassius Clay – 55,000 fans saw the controversial bout between Henry Cooper and the upand-coming Cassius Clay, who went on to be known as the greatest heavyweight of all time, Muhammad Ali.
4. 1966 - England’s World Cup win – the greatest moment in English footballing history is now over 50 years old, as Bobby Moore and co, beat the old rivals West Germany in a final for the ages. 5. 1975 - Evel Knievel – world famous daredevil Evel Knievel rolled into Wembley attempting to jump 13 red double decker London buses…he didn’t make it. Despite significant injuries, he walked away from the accident, famously giving a thumbs up to the crowd. 6. 1985 - Live Aid – Wembley welcomed 72,000 for the UK leg of the worldwide charity telethon, which attracted a TV audience of a whopping 1.5billion. 7. 1986 - Queen Live at Wembley – Queen’s last ever tour before Freddie Mercury’s untimely death in 1991, was iconic for the image of Mercury dressed in a cape and crown with the national anthem playing. 8. 1996 - Euro 96 – 30 years of hurt, Jules Rimet still gleaming… while England weren’t successful, they captured the nation’s hearts in the summer of ’96, before falling at the semi-final stage. 9. 2007 - FA Cup final – the first FA Cup final at the new Wembley, Chelsea’s Didier Drogba scored the winner against Manchester United in front of a crowd of almost 90,000. 10. 2011 - Champions League Final – rated as one of the best players ever, Barcelona’s Lionel Messi led the Catalans to a 3-1 win over Manchester United in European football’s grandest occasion.

IT’S A MAN’S WORLD
This year will see a new addition to the European Senior Tour for 2017, the inaugural Farmfoods European Senior Masters. The three-day event looks certain to attract the biggest and best players from the tour to the scenic Forest of Arden Marriott Hotel & Country Club, Birmingham. Taking place between 20-22 October 2017, the event is the penultimate of a gruelling 15 round season, and plays an important role in deciding who will feature in the season ending MCB Tour Championships in Mauritius. The course will test every experienced participant’s golfing credentials, rewarding the winner with an impressive €50,000 first prize. The Farmfoods European Senior Masters will bring with it a fresh challenge, something that is sure to thrill both amateurs and professional alike. Former Ryder Cup Captains Paul McGinley and José María Olazábal, both now 50 years old are eligible to play, as is former Ryder Cup and 3-time European tour winner player Peter Baker who will be the official event host, playing in his first European Senior Tour event. Other professionals currently entered include Champions very own British Senior Open Champion Paul Broadhurst, three time European Senior Tour winner Gary Wolstenholme MBE, European Tour winners David Gilford, Barry Lane, Costantino Rocca, Jarmo Sandelin, Order of Merit winner Paul Wesselingh and two time Senior Major champion Roger Chapman*.
The Forest of Arden is a fitting stage to host such an illustrious event. With its two courses, the Arden (the Championship course) and the Aylesford, it has hosted the British Masters on five occassions, with past winners including Barry Lane, Colin Montgomerie and 2018 European Ryder Cup Captain Thomas Bjørn gracing the greens. With a breath-taking backdrop of tall oak trees along the back nine, beauty hides the tough challenge of the lush, yet testing rough, before climaxing on the immaculately maintained putting greens. While it may not have hosted an event as significant as the Farmfoods European Senior Masters for a number of years, the world-renowned hotel and golf resort is more than ready to re-make its mark in professional tour golf. Brand agency Champions (UK) plc are bringing its knowhow to the organisation of the event, with the experience of successfully hosting the Farmfoods British Par 3 Championship at Nailcote Hall for the last 10 years. As title sponsor, national frozen food specialist Farmfoods brings its reputation of quality and class to the event, continuing a fruitful partnership with Champions in the world of professional golf.
2016 Order of Merit Champion and proud Midlander, Paul Broadhurst, will be looking to continue his fine form from last year with a win on home turf.

some incredible experience auction items. At the midway point of the event on Wednesday there will be a player’s banquet where the competitors will be able to sit back, relax and enjoy themselves as they are entertained by Britain’s Got Talent comedian Kev Orkian. On the Friday evening following the final day’s play, a star-studded black tie ball will conclude the week with former Great Britain Olympian and 4x400m relay World Champion Derek Redmond acting as auctioneer for a second charity auction and Sky Sports golf commentator Nick Dougherty will be on hosting duties. The 2017 edition of the event will once again be hosted by the Ryder Cup’s most successful ever European captain Tony Jacklin CBE for the 10th consecutive year. Tony will be competing on each of the four days giving fans the chance to witness a British and US Open champion in all his glory. Last year Welshman Mark Mouland became the first man to win the professional competition twice, with an impressive score of -11, breaking the Cromwell course record. This year he will be vying to defend his title up against the likes of Ian Woosnam OBE, Paul Lawrie OBE and Costantino Rocca. Former US Open champion Michael Campbell will also return. Current Senior Open Championship winner Paul Broadhurst will be aiming to win his first British Par 3 title alongside fellow Champions of Golf stablemates Peter Baker and Gary Wolstenholme MBE. British female golfing legends Dame Laura Davies and Trish Johnson will also be making their British Par 3 Championship debuts in August. 80 |

Last year’s Celeb Am competitions saw fine performances from Nigel Mansell CBE, Catchphrase legend Roy Walker and Strictly Come Dancing star James Jordan. This year will see the return of a host of stars including Westlife star Brian McFadden, Boyzone’s Keith Duffy, Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel, England’s most capped player Peter Shilton OBE, Strictly Come Dancing judge Len Goodman and the 1992 Formula One world champion Mansell also returning. The event is unique in the fact that it allows both males and females to compete alongside and against one another on one of the only mixed gender competitions not just in golf but in sport as a whole. With plenty to enjoy throughout the week there is something for everyone with an inflatable golf simulator, chipping and putting challenges for kids to get involved with. It’s not all about the celebrities and professionals though there is a prize on offer to the best performing amateur. The Norma C Herd Silver Salver was last year shared between Strictly Come Dancing star James Jordan and amateur golfer Ricky Sturrock, with past winners including nine-year-old Jack Drury in 2015 and World Women’s golf star Charley Hull as well as Aaron Rai who has recently won the Barclays Kenya Open on the European Challenge Tour. The event can deliver a real boost to rising stars with local qualifiers taking place with junior spots on offer for the professional championship. A series of young professionals have used success at the Farmfoods British Par 3 Championship as a springboard. Drawing confidence from his 2013 victory, Tommy Fleetwood won his maiden title on the European Tour at the Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles the following month. Having claimed the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship in January of this year, Tommy is now ranked 29th in the world. Likewise, the 2014 champion, Eddie Pepperell, has really pushed on since his Nailcote Hall win, progressing from the Challenge Tour to the European Tour, and continuing his good form to thrive in the professional ranks. Tickets for the event are available at www.britishpar3.com but if you can’t make it to Nailcote Hall don’t fear because highlights of the competition are available on Sky Sports 4 and Sky Sports Mix. The website will also feature a whole host of information so you don’t have to miss a second of the action. Live scores, player & sponsor interviews and photo galleries are all included to provide a comprehensive platform to keep you up to date throughout the competition. You can still get involved in this year’s Farmfoods British Par 3 Championship with only a few available places still up for grabs for both the Celeb-Am and Pro-Am competitions. There are still sponsorship opportunities available and for more information please contact the Farmfoods British Par 3 Championship team. This year’s event is sure to be the best yet and our star studded line up from the worlds of sport and entertainment means it is set up to be a wonderful festival of golf.

IT’S A MAN’S WORLD
CELEBRATING 140 YEARS OF WIMBLEDON Strawberries and cream, Sir Cliff Richard performing and John McEnroe’s famous “you cannot be serious!” moment have all become synonymous with The Championships, Wimbledon. In 2017 the world’s oldest tennis tournament will be celebrating its 140th anniversary and has established itself as one of the highlights of British summer. One of the four Grand Slam tennis tournaments, Wimbledon has come a long way since its inception in 1877, when Spencer Gore became the first-ever champion after defeating fellow Brit William Marshall in straight sets. Since then there has been 30 male and 22 female winners and the tournament’s popularity has soared. In fact, an estimated audience of over 1bn people worldwide witnessed Andy Murray’s triumph over Milos Raonic in 2016, which cemented his position as one of the greatest British sportsmen of all time. So strong is Wimbledon’s appeal that some of the biggest names in tennis have graced Wimbledon’s greens over the last 140 years and arguably two of the all-time greats came head to head for the third consecutive year in 2008. Switzerland’s most successful player Roger Federer and Spaniard Rafael Nadal had already met twice in the final but no one could have predicted the electric final that fans were treated to. With Federer, having defeated Nadal in both 2006 and 2007, this was to be the year that Nadal finally overcame his long-time adversary and claim his first Wimbledon title. He did so in dramatic fashion in an exhilarating and adrenalin filled final with play lasting a remarkable four hours and 48 minutes. Due

to two rain delays in the match, the overall length of the event spanned more than seven hours with Nadal winning a final set tie-break to earn victory. This classic match is widely regarded as the greatest final in Wimbledon’s history. In 2016 more people attended Wimbledon than any other sporting event in the UK, and over the years it has produced some of our most memorable sporting moments. In 2013 Andy Murray produced an iconic performance and was crowned the first British men’s singles champion in 77 years when he beat Novak Djokovic in straight sets. After more than two hours on the court and years of training to get to this point, emotion poured out of him upon the realisation that he had finally achieved his lifelong dream. 15,000 people in Centre Court and millions more watching on television not only witnessed his historic sporting achievement but the heart-warming moment Murray embraced his mother who was his very first coach. Fans attending this year’s event, which runs from 3-16 July, will be hoping to see a similar standard of tennis on display. Despite playing such a significant part in British culture, if you are not a sports fan there is still plenty to do. Wimbledon is so much more than just a tennis tournament and located in South West London there is an abundance of activities on offer. One of the region’s most famous pieces of architecture is the Wimbledon windmill. Located at the Wimbledon Common, 2017 marks the windmill’s 200th anniversary and to celebrate they are offering free entry during the summer weekends.
Ideal for people of all ages there are plenty of fun activities for kids to get involved with, and, for those who want to learn more about the history behind the windmill there is an on-site museum packed with information. With the Wimbledon common the perfect place to take a stroll on those beautiful summer evenings, the iconic windmill is always worth a visit. As well as the common, Wimbledon Park also has a whole host of things to do. Set on its own stunning lake, visitors are able to take part in a range of boating activities. No matter their ability level or interest there is bound to be something to suit everyone. If you would like to experience a different culture, then Wimbledon is also home to the UK’s very first Buddhist temple. Since opening its doors in 1982, the Buddhapadipa Temple has been the main home to London’s Buddhist community with nuns and monks regularly attending. Away from the usual hectic day to day goings on of the capital, the temple is tucked away in one of Wimbledon’s most tranquil spots and staff are always happy to accommodate. These are just a small selection of things that are available to do in Wimbledon and whether you are watching the tennis or taking part in something different, you are sure to find something that takes your fancy in this beautiful and historic part of London.
Game, set and match 11 ace facts about Wimbledon. IT’S A MAN’S WORLD
75th edition of the Monaco Grand Prix Formula 1 is a money-spinning sport spanning almost every continent in the world across its nine-month, 20 race season. Arguably the most anticipated meeting of every year is the Monaco Grand Prix. The event, traditionally held in May, on the edge of the glittering French Riviera, has seen the world’s fastest cars take to the tight, winding streets of the Principality since 1929. 2017 marks the 75th edition of the event. Known for its socialite-friendly party lifestyle, Monte Carlo is a home away from home for many of the current crop of drivers, with British champions Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button residing in the area. To mark the 75th edition of the iconic race, Aspirational Magazine looks back on the best stories the track has written since its inauguration.

1929 – First ever race at the circuit History was made on 14 April 1929, with the first ever motorsport race in Monaco taking place. Founded by Anthony Noghès, the meeting was invitation-only and saw 16 starters, over half of whom were French. The maiden victor of the Monaco Grand Prix was a Brit, known under the moniker of Mr Williams, who was the first to complete 100 laps, coming across the line in just under four hours.
1950 – Inaugural F1 season, a legend is born Fast-forward 21 years and Formula 1 as we know it today is born. The first official World Championship began and took place in Monaco as part of a globe-trotting schedule. In doing so, the Championship a legend was born in Juan-Manuel Fangio. Argentina-born Fangio, winner of five drivers’ titles, took his first pole position, the fastest lap and a win that day, as he began his journey to becoming one of the best drivers to have ever taken part in the sport.
1982 – Rain causes havoc, leaving one car standing The elements often play a part in an F1 race, but the 1982 edition was turned on its head by a torrential band of rain, which caused five changes of the lead in the space of the last two laps of the race. The great Alain Prost, a man who’d go onto have a lot of history at the circuit, was the first to be caught out, spinning his car and gifting the lead to Ricardo Patrese, before Patrese in-turn stalled, and fell back to third. The two other remaining runners both ran out of fuel on the last lap, leaving Patrese to make it over the line, as the only driver left standing and be crowned the race winner.
1984 – Prost vs a rookie Senna Prost makes the list again, alongside British F1 icon Nigel Mansell and a young Brazilian rookie by the name of Ayrton Senna. Treacherous rainy conditions were causing the field trouble. Mansell had an adventurous first 11 laps, passing Prost for the lead, before crashing out early to hand leadership back to the Frenchman. Meanwhile, Senna was cutting his way through the rest of the field, as conditions worsened, but successfully made it all the way to second place and was just seven seconds behind the leader, Prost. The race was red flagged, leading to disappointment for fans, but the beginning of something special for a certain Mr Senna.
1992 – Senna v Mansell duel Back to Mansell, and the Brit was re-writing the history books with records for the most wins, poles and laps led in his superior Williams car. He’d won the preceding five races of the season and was on course to win a sixth at Monaco. On the track he led the chasing pack, before a slow pit stop saw him lose out to Ayrton Senna, in an ailing McLaren. Senna, used all his considerable talents to keep the rampant Mansell behind him, leading to a classic duel between the two, until the chequered flag waved. Senna hung on to first place although it was Nigel Mansell who went on to become the season’s champion.
1996 – Panis wins, Herbert 3rd, one of his best results Bad weather conditions struck again in 1996, with a race that began with 22 starters on the starting grid whittled down to just 13 by lap five! Among those left were the Brits Johnny Herbert and David Coulthard, but with the stubborn conditions, more and more cars were dropping out of the race, offering both a hint of a race win. However, it was not to be for either, as the 300-1 longshot, Frenchman, Olivier Panis, found himself at the front of the pack, winning his solitary grand prix.
2008 – Hamilton wins after crashing In 2008, Lewis Hamilton was a rookie taking the F1 world by storm. By the time he arrived in Monaco, a civil war with his teammate was brewing and the Ayrton Senna comparisons were already beginning. In the opening laps of a wet race he collided with the barrier, leading to a tyre puncture. Unbelievably, the strategy of sticking the Brit on fresh tyres and a lot of fuel worked to a tee. Fellow drivers found the track increasingly tough to negotiate, leaving Hamilton to take the chequered flag for only the second time in his burgeoning career.
2016 – Revenge served for Hamilton, as Brit prevails again Last year’s edition of the Monaco GP was eventful as ever, with drama and storylines galore. Fresh from a double retirement in the previous race in Spain, Mercedes warned its drivers Nico Rosberg and Hamilton to watch themselves on the tight streets of Monte Carlo. Rain caused a start under the safety car, and allowed Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo an opportunity to lead from the front after his shock pole. Strategy played a key role in Hamilton finding his way to the front of the pack, while Rosberg, battling a brake problem was fading, falling backwards at a rapid rate. A slow pit-stop from Red Bull for Ricciardo, enabled Hamilton to stay out in-front, with the Aussie battling back towards the end of the race. However, Hamilton thwarted any attempts at an overtake and won convincingly.

How Checkatrade are helping thousands of people through their charity work
When a freak tornado tore its way through the small town of Selsey, Sussex in January 1998, no one could have guessed that this would lay the foundations for Checkatrade, the largest online resource of trusted tradespeople in the country. The immediate aftermath saw a huge trail of destruction throughout the town, with £10m worth of damage caused. From this, entrepreneur and local businessman Kevin Byrne was inspired to start a brand-new resource of trusted tradespeople, as the devastation had attracted scores of rogue traders to the town.
Charity Abseiling, Sunday 11th September 2016
Fast forward to the present day, and Checkatrade have continued to grow, with the company now generating a whopping £1.5bn every year for UK trades. Checkatrade are not only a household name across the UK when it comes to home improvement, the company is also dedicated to helping others through its charity work.
Craig is adamant the company are more than just a trusted tradespeople resource, saying: “I have worked with Checkatrade for a while now and I am continually impressed, not just by the great service they offer customers. It’s more than helping consumers find a trustworthy tradesperson, I’m impressed by their commitment to raising money and supporting good causes.”
The company’s values are based upon helping others so it’s fitting that Checkatrade have a large focus on charity work. One of Kevin’s biggest achievements to date is the 12 marathons in 12 months he ran, fundraising for a building project for a local school. Checkatrade themselves donated a site manager and materials and convinced many of their members to give up their time to complete the build. Checkatrade’s charitable contributions were commended winning the ‘Greatest Contribution to Sussex Charity’ award at the Sussex Business Awards. Checkatrade regularly contribute to a whole host of other charity and fundraising events. Here is just a selection of what they’ve been up to over the last 12 months.

For their biggest fundraising event of the year, Checkatrade took over The Emirates Spinnaker Tower, in Portsmouth for a charity abseil. The colossal structure dwarfs the London Eye and the Blackpool Tower standing at over 560ft. 40 plucky participants took on the daring challenge, among them Big Brother winner and Checkatrade ambassador Craig Phillips.
Almost £8,000 was raised for the Lighthouse Foundation, who work to support victims of the 2015 Nepal earthquake, that left thousands either dead or injured, and hundreds of thousands more without a home.
Checkatrade Mad March Mare, 4th March 2017 Taking place at the opposite end of the country, the Checkatrade Mad March Mare, saw competitors take on a 10km obstacle course. Staff from Checkatrade’s offices in Nottingham, Newcastle and West Sussex were present and joined in with the fun! Money raised went towards the Tynedale Hospice at Home, based in West Northumberland and Ponetland and St Oswald’s Hospice, Gosforth, Newcastle-upon-Tyne. The funds will help provide essential care for those with terminal or life-limiting illnesses.
Checkatrade Trophy Final, 2 April 2017 In 2016, the company broke new ground by becoming the title sponsor of the Football League’s EFL Trophy. The Checkatrade Trophy was a roaring success, culminating in a record-breaking attendance of 74,434 fans at Wembley Stadium to see Coventry City prevail 2-1 over Oxford United in April 2017. Not only was the day a fantastic footballing spectacle but it also provided the opportunity to raise awareness for a great cause. When Checkatrade member and landscaper Addam Smith discovered that his close friend and fellow tradesman Keith Ellick had been diagnosed with terminal cancer he formed the charity ‘Band of Builders’ and helped raise almost £60,000 to help Keith put his affairs in order. Sadly, Keith passed away a few days before he was due to carry the ball out at the final and so Addam and his son George did so on his behalf. Band of Builders continue to fundraise and are currently hoping to raise £100,000 for Keith’s family which will help them to buy their house from the council and provide them with more stability. Their charitable efforts will also raise money for tradespeople who have found themselves in similar situations to Keith.
Teams of four were carted off to prison, before having to ‘escape’ the confines by any means they could. From an unknown location teams had to find their way back to the starting point at Fontwell Racecourse, Chichester. A great day was had by all involved, with thousands being raised and plenty of fancy dress fun. Checkatrade realise how important it is to provide a helping hand to those less fortunate and have a range of fundraising events lined up throughout the year. For more information on any of Checkatrade’s charity events visit www.checkatrade.com Checkatrade helps combat the UK’s rogue trader problem by continuously vetting and monitoring local tradespeople such as builders, plumbers and electricians as well as service providers. If you’re thinking of having work done in your home and are looking for a reputable tradesperson, please visit www.checkatrade.com
Charity Jailbreak, 7 May 2017 In May, Checkatrade again teamed up with radio station Spirit FM to raise funds for the Sussex Snowdrop Trust, which provides days out for families whose children suffer from various life-limiting afflictions. Putting on their annual charity jailbreak competition, participants were left with no phone, no money and only had their brains to rely on during this challenging and fun filled event.

Langan’s Brasserie is arguably one of the most iconic eateries in London, boasting an interesting history, a menu that showcases traditionally British cuisine, and an interior easily mistaken for a highprofile art gallery. Located on Stratton Street in the affluent Mayfair, which is a wash with fine architecture and five star hotels, Langan’s Brasserie was founded in 1976 by entrepreneur Peter Langan and his actor friend and business partners, Sir Michael Caine CBE and Richard Shepherd CBE (the first Michelin Starred Chef). Under the trio’s wing, the restaurant quickly became a haunt for famous faces, seating the likes of the iconic Elizabeth Taylor, Mohammed Ali, Mick Jagger and Jack Nicholson. An avid art enthusiast, Peter also built a prestigious art collection with originals from dear friends and famed artists including Francis Bacon and David Hockney. To this day the restaurant and private dining area’s walls are still adorned with original paintings, a feature that brings guests to the brasserie time and time again. Sadly Peter passed away in 1988 due to a fire at his home, however his legacy lives on. Offering an exciting range of traditional British fayre, at Langan’s, diners find a delicious mix of vibrant dishes all made from fresh ingredients. Dishes include signature dishes, spinach souffle, grilled Dover sole with parsley butter, Veal Saltimbocca and Beef Wellington with Madeira sauce. The menus have, of course, naturally changed with the times, but there are still a few dishes that pay homage to the brasserie’s history and have remained on the menu since the day the brasserie’s doors first opened. The brasserie, which also offers a decadent bar area, is truly the perfect destination for both art and food lovers alike.

A New Approach to Brand Services More often than not, this causes confusing, disjointed and inefficient delivery, which dramatically reduces the return on investment for the client and can have a detrimental effect on the brand.
Champions (UK) plc is a multiple award-winning family-run brand agency based in the East Midlands and London that delivers results and establishes long-term relationships with its clients. With a passion for brands, they understand that people drive business. Just as people make emotional investments in their brands, Champions make emotional investments in their clients. They become part of your team and build your future together.
Reshaping the Landscape Back in 2003 and seeking to overturn industry norms, Founder and Managing Director Matthew Hayes defied the tendency towards niche service provision by creating an agency with full spectrum capabilities. He wanted to make life easier for brands. He told us, “Tradition has it that an agency is supposed to occupy a niche. An agency is meant to specialise in one area, and one area alone. While this is self-limiting for the agency, more importantly it makes things tough for the client. Every brand is different and has its own unique branding requirements and challenges. The last thing a business needs is the added complexity of juggling several agencies in the hope of reaching its target audience. With the traditional agency model, clients are often faced with clashes of creative interpretation of the campaign brief. 112 |
INSPIRATIONAL.LONDON
Another major flaw in the traditional model is the lack of integrity in agencies’ pitches. The niche agency’s objective is to sell as much of the service it offers as possible, not to provide the client with what they need. For example, an advertising agency always wants to sell advertising, even though in many cases the budget or end goal may not be best served using this medium. As a full service agency, we can ensure we allocate a client’s budget effectively to maximise results and their returns.“
Choosing A Different Tack Breaking the mould, Champions came up with a unique model. They created an agency with expertise across the board, one capable of delivering everything brands need from one place. Champions (UK) plc was established to make an impact in an initial five service areas.
CREATIVE : MARKETING : PR : EVENTS : CELEBRITY Without doubt, Matthew’s vision has paid off. Despite an unpredictable economic climate, they have grown into a £20 million turnover concern with more than 80 full-time staff. Despite exponential growth, they’ve kept the family atmosphere and both the company and Matthew himself have been singled out for a number of high profile awards at national level. Their focus on driving results through strong client partnerships has seen them deliver success to well over 500 high profile brands, many of which remain with them today.

Commitment to delivery means they’ve never shied away from a challenge. Over the years, they have continued to develop their capabilities and expand their offering.
While they all sit under the over-arching Champions (UK) plc Group, each service area is a fully-fledged, self-sustaining sub-brand in its own right.
Embracing change, their five-department model has evolved and they now deliver brand services accross 10 comprehensive areas of expertise.
Clients can now go to them for specialist individual services or choose to benefit from joined-up full service delivery, with 10 expert departments working together in perfect harmony.

BANKING’S BEST KEPT SECRET… Allied Irish Bank (GB) Private Banking, who’s private banking headquarters are located on Berkeley Square in the prestigious W1 area of central London, is very much a niche player in the UK’s banking market. The bank predominantly offers corporate and business banking facilities. Head of Private Banking, Linda Middleton, outlined what sets the bank apart from its competitors… “For us, service is everything,” said Linda, “while High Street banks will offer good service, at AIB (GB) Private Banking we offer something more – a bespoke service that is tailored to the exacting requirements of our clients.” Taking personal service to the next level, AIB (GB)’s private banking team build relationships with clients and adopts the kind of traditional core values that many of us want from our service providers. “The fact that we answer calls within the office,” continued Linda, “to ensure our clients have a designated person they can speak to, demonstrates how our service is all about relationships and making things easy for our clients.” Dealing exclusively with high-net worth individuals (HNWI), Linda and her team also work with their colleagues in business banking. This ability to deliver a comprehensive service is vital in meeting the needs of HNWI clients who are
looking to prioritise reaching their financial goals but are so often ‘time poor’. With a team of private client managers taking care of all banking requirements and ensuring that any financial needs are dealt with promptly and efficiently, AIB (GB)’s Private Banking aim is to make banking simple and to support clients with their big decisions; helping them to plan for the future. By carefully building relationships, the experienced team are able to discern the right products for each individual client and provide tailored solutions. After all, as Linda noted, “What is right for one client, isn’t necessarily right for another.” As you’d expect, AIB (GB) Private Banking offer the full range of banking services, including current accounts, savings accounts, mortgages, loans and credit cards and working with independent financial advisors, can also support clients with advice on structuring their pensions or investments. Linda added, “As we get to know our clients, we are able to support those who have complex banking needs. For example, clients with multiple income streams can often find High Street banks reluctant to lend, however, we see the whole person and can tailor our solutions to fit.”

FIVE REASONS WHY A KEYNOTE SPEAKER IS PERFECT FOR YOUR COMPANY. On a cold and wet Monday morning or as tiredness sets in with just an hour to go on a Friday afternoon it can be difficult to stay focused as people are longing for five pm to arrive. However, here at Champions Speakers we have a solution to make sure your employees remain on top of their game from 9 till 5 and beyond. We have access to hundreds of outstanding keynote speakers from the worlds of sport, entertainment and business who can ensure that everyone in your company fulfils their potential and maximise their performance. Here is a rundown of the top five reasons why hiring a keynote speaker would be beneficial for your company.
1. Teamwork. In all companies teamwork is essential to ensure that the highest quality of work is achieved. With a keynote speaker, they can provide advice and guidance on pulling together and working towards a shared goal which are effective qualities needed in any professional workplace. With sporting greats including Neil Back MBE, Peter Shilton OBE and Derek Redmond on our roster they can use attributes from their sporting careers and easily apply them to the work place with similar traits required in order to be successful in a corporate environment. Being able to get across the values of your company in a positive and engaging manner, means that a keynote speaker is the perfect option to make sure everyone who works in the business is on the same page, working together and striving towards a successful end goal something not possible without teamwork.
124 |
INSPIRATIONAL.LONDON
2. Maximise Performance. In all walks of life everybody has the ability to better their performances and a keynote speaker can help you achieve this. They are able to bring out determination within individuals to be the best they can be and perform to their highest level possible in everything they do. The skills needed to work at the highest level of work is a quality which can be transferred universally to all aspects of life making all of our speakers ideal for a variety of engagements. In a corporate environment, it is vital that everybody is performing at a high standard to make sure the company is flourishing. Therefore, a keynote speaker can be inspiring to employees at every level of a business and maximise everyone’s performance.
3. Leadership In every company, it is necessary to have strong leaders who can manage and direct employees to achieve success. For everything to run smoothly in a corporate business, department leaders need to have the ability to communicate effectively, resolve issues and have good organisational skills. Being able to lead a team of people is a difficult but crucial role in all companies. There are numerous speakers who are fantastic leaders and perfect to perform talks on leadership. Just one example is Sir Clive Woodward OBE the England World Cup 2003 winning coach who has worked with some of the biggest names in world rugby. He can draw on his experiences in the sporting world and the leadership skills he demonstrated in his career are ideal for these types of functions. Sir Clive was the perfect leader acting as a role model to his players and rugby fans alike which is extremely important within professional work.

4. Overcoming Problems
5. Improve Morale
Everyone has to overcome hurdles in their career but it is important that when issues arise in a business they are dealt with swiftly and efficiently. Identifying the concern and resolving it as soon as possible whilst trying to ensure that it can be prevented in the future, is the best way to overcome issues.
One of the main things a keynote speaker can offer is their ability to improve the morale and attitudes within workplaces. If people are becoming disillusioned with their careers and it is having an adverse effect on the company they can offer a fresh perspective and instil a positive attitude.
A keynote speaker can clearly articulate how to do this by combining a blend of anecdotes and knowledge to engage audiences and provide beneficial advice on these kinds of issues. Most of the successful speakers available you can book via Champions Speakers have had to overcome some form of adversity in their lives and so can apply their experiences to the corporate world.

FACING UP to adversity 134 |
INSPIRATIONAL.LONDON
Simon Weston CBE is the face of the Falklands Conflict. Events on June 8 1982 changed his life forever but he refuses to allow that day to define him. Inspirational London had the pleasure of talking with a man who shares his journey’s lessons as a sought after motivational speaker. His message is one of courage, of rediscovery, of hope and opportunity. One of turning negatives into positives. “During my presentations, I talk about the incident, my recovery and my attitude from then until now. I was in the doldrums but I found that, if you look at things as a failure, you’re missing the chance to learn. You never know when the next pearl of wisdom is coming.” In June 1982, just days before her surrender, Argentina’s grip was failing. She still held the Falklands capital Stanley but knew a decisive British assault was coming. Seeking to delay the inevitable, on the morning of the 8th, the Junta’s jets made their move. What followed was the conflict’s deadliest single attack on British servicemen. Moored in Bluff Cove, the military transport ships Sir Tristram and Sir Galahad waited to land troops in support of the ground offensive. Communications difficulties meant they were oblivious to the threat. They were exposed.
“When you’ve been disfigured, it can be like a bereavement. You’ve lost the person you used to be. I had to find myself again. Self-image is a big part of that, so there were big hurdles. Nothing good is ever easy and I found the harder I worked, the easier it became.” “Unfortunately, we live in a very superficial world. Women in particular are under enormous pressure. Nowadays, I just think ‘if you don’t like my face, the door’s over there’. I find that if you feel comfortable and project positivity, others respond well.” This outlook endeared Simon to the British public during a 1983 BBC documentary, ‘Simon’s War’, the first of five subsequent films tracing his recovery. He has since used his profile to highlight not only disfigurement and veterans causes but a series of other important issues, including post-traumatic stress disorder, loneliness and intolerance. Simon sat as President for Wales Scouting for two years and is Patron of the Falklands Veterans Foundation, The Enham Trust, Allied Service Trust and an Ambassador for Changing Faces. After 35 years, he remains an inspirational figure. His bravery saw him voted the Nation’s Favourite Hero in 2014, his ongoing charity work earnt him an CBE in 2016.
At 2pm local time, a wave of five Skyhawks unleashed their deadly cargo. A 500lb bomb penetrated Sir Tristram’s deck but failed to explode on impact. Two men were killed but the remaining crew were evacuated before it detonated. On Sir Galahad things took a grimmer turn. Three missiles slammed into her, igniting over 100 tonnes of ammunition and fuel supplies. 48 perished as Navy choppers hovered in thick black smoke to winch survivors to safety. Having sustained serious burns to 46% of his body, Simon was evacuated. Severe injuries spoke of a long road ahead. In his position, many of us might have succumbed to anger, yet Simon has never born a grudge. “I’m now friends with the Argentinian pilot. The only thing that separates me from him is geography and the different cultures we grew up in. We share our love of country and our sense of duty. We share our conscience, our professionalism, our motives for ourselves and for our families.” Simon was eventually repatriated to the UK, where he underwent the first of over 80 operations. Mental wounds soon emerged. His face disfigured to the point that his mother failed to recognise him at Woolwich Hospital, he found himself robbed of his confidence and identity. “With friends and family having to go to work, after I left hospital I was largely left to my own devices. A lot of us suppress our feelings until they can’t be contained any more. It was only when I retreated to my own private space that I crumbled.” “Back then, much went unspoken. Men were supposed to be men. The famous British stiff upper lip rarely so much as quivered but we’ve made great strides since then. You’re allowed to be distraught, you’re allowed to be depressed. Just because you’re a trained soldier, you’re still a human being with emotions.”
His story strikes a chord with everyone. He shares it with businesses and individuals across the UK and beyond. Saga Cruises, regular partners of our publisher, Champions (UK) plc, are the latest to call on Simon, asking him on to a Mediterranean cruise in May of this year and treating their guests to his insights. “It was a fantastic trip”, he said. “I love the opportunity to get my message across to a new audience but I also met some incredible people and drew on their perspectives. As my mother always says, if you don’t learn something new every day, you’ve missed the point.”

The King Power Stadium provided the perfect backdrop for the event which kick-started the New Year in style. Each year, East Midlands-based brand agency Champions (UK) plc host an event for selected clients, and this year it came in the form of a Vintage Hollywood themed ball. Bubbly was flowing on arrival with a Champagne reception before host for the evening, comedian Dominic Holland, took to the stage. Best-known for his stints on a number of television and radio shows and as a regular panellist on Channel 5’s Wright Stuff, Dominic is a Perrier Award winning comedian, author and broadcaster. He has also written material for Lenny Henry, Harry Enfield, Clive Anderson and the late, great Bob Monkhouse.
Femi Latiff & Neil Back MBE
Attending the glamorous event were Sam Bailey, William Roache MBE and Neil Back MBE as well as the Olympian famed for one of the greatest moments in Olympic history, Derek Redmond. Derek took on auctioneering duties for the evening and helped raise funds for Leicestershire charity Rainbows Hospice for Children and Young People. President’s Lunch Nursery Pavilion, Lord’s
Thursday 4 May 2017 Chris Cowdrey
Lord’s Taverners President Sir Michael Parkinson was the host of a fantastic President’s Lunch in the Nursery Pavilion at Lord’s. Raising a total of £32,000, the event was a roaring success thanks to entertainment from comedian Rod Woodward and Sir Michael’s guest on stage, Piers Morgan.
Rod Woodward entertains the guests
As an uncompromising former Daily Mirror editor and international showbiz personality it was fascinating to see Piers Morgan receive an in-depth grilling by the British chat-show doyen and Lord’s Taverners President. A particular highlight of the interview came during the opening exchanges in which Piers was shown footage from during the 2013/14 Ashes where former Australian speedster, Brett Lee, didn’t hold back when bowling a rapid over at him in front of a large crowd. If you are yet to witness it, it makes for painful viewing! Piers Morgan, Rod Woodward and Sir Michael Parkinson
Many thanks are also extended to Sam Alderson, captain of the Bexley Disability Cricket team. His appearance on stage, alongside event host Chris Cowdrey, provided a wonderful insight into the work of the Lord’s Taverners through the LTDCC programme and living with a rare genetic disorder, TAR syndrome.
‘Parky’ and Piers on stage
It was an afternoon of fantastic entertainment and a beer reception courtesy of Shepherd Neame at the home of cricket, and funds raised will go a long way to giving more young disadvantaged and disabled people a sporting chance.

Kia Oval, Surrey County Cricket Club Future Planet Fund
Wednesday 3 May 2017 On Wednesday 3 May, hundreds of guests congregated at the Kia Oval Cricket Stadium, the home of Surrey County Cricket Club, for a fundraising dinner in aid of the Rwanda Cricket Stadium Foundation (RCSF). The foundation has been raising money for the construction of the first, international standard, cricket facility in Kigali, Rwanda. The not-for-profit cricket ground will ensure that Rwandans, no matter their background can have access to one of the world’s most popular games.
De La Rue
The ground has been designed to create a positive environment for Rwandans to spend time. A free HIV testing service, is also available.
David Cameron, Alby Shale, Michael Vaughan OBE and Jonathan Agnew MBE
On the evening, business giants were in attendance along with former Prime Minister, David Cameron, who is the patron of the RCSF and has been in support of the cause since its beginnings. During the evening, a number of inspiring speeches were made, one of which was from David himself. His address covered the importance of the organisation and how cricket can be used as a tool for reconciliation. Since it was established, the RCSF has raised more than £1m for the construction project, and at this event a further £150,000 was pledged, a staggering figure which will make the organisation’s dream a reality. The ground is expected to open in October 2017.
