THE BELLE OF THE BALL A far cry from the bushy haired, precocious young girl we were introduced to some 16 years ago, Emma Watson has quite literally transformed into the Belle of the ball with her latest blockbuster film Beauty and the Beast causing a stir around the world. The live action re-make of Disney’s 1991 classic fairytale, hit our screens in spring with Emma Watson slipping into that iconic yellow ball gown to master the role of the beautiful Belle.

Everyone knows the story of Beauty and the Beast – the independent, intellectual and kind Belle uncovers the inner beauty of an ugly beast. Equally everyone thinks they know the story of Emma Watson – the talented child star who was cast into the limelight in one of the biggest and greatest film franchises of all time, Harry Potter.

BEAUTY, HEALTH AND LIFESTYLE

Born on 15 April 1990 in Paris to English lawyers Jacqueline Luesby and Chris Watson, Emma found her love of acting when she and her parents moved back across the channel to leafy Oxfordshire in 1995, where, outside of school, she enrolled at the prestigious Stagecoach Theatre Arts. Emma was just nine years old when her confidence and natural talent cast a spell over the Philosopher’s Stone director, Chris Columbus, and won her the role of Hermione Granger, the know-it-all classmate of Harry Potter. Starring in all eight films from The Philosopher’s Stone in 2001 to the Deathly Hallows Part Two in 2011, audiences watched Emma grow into the natural beauty she is today. With Potter-mania at its peak, as the film franchise came to an end in 2011, making a total of some $8 billion at the worldwide box-office, everyone was ready for more of Emma and eager to see what direction her career would take. In an interview with The Telegraph in 2011 Emma explained how, although she has now stepped out of the witch’s perfectly polished school shoes, she will always reserve a place for Hermione in her heart, “I think of her like a sister, she feels so real to me […] I will actually just miss being her.” Like many child stars before her, Emma’s immense fame could have pushed her off the rails, however she has always had her feet firmly on the ground. Prioritising her education has always been of ultimate importance. In fact, in 2009 she announced that she was crossing the pond to attend the prestigious Ivy League, Brown University to study English Literature. With her face on the side of buses and her name known all over the world, she knew it would be hard for people to take this venture seriously, but instead of giving it a try and then closing the door on it, which many have done before her, she pursued it to the end. Speaking of her first day, Emma said, ‘’I walked into the canteen and everyone went completely silent and turned around to look at me […] I had to say to myself, ‘It’s OK, you can do this. You just have to take a deep breath and gather your courage’” In 2014 she donned her cap and gown and proudly graduated with her Bachelor’s Degree. The degree took her five years to complete due to her filming the Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows Parts 1 and 2, The Bling Ring, Noah, where she appeared alongside Russell Crowe, and The Perks of Being a Wallflower. Casting her in 2011’s Perks of Being a Wallflower, acclaimed director Stephen Chbosky was sold on Emma playing the leading role of Sam before casting even began, “with Emma I just knew she was right. I knew in my gut, and that’s before we even met her […] I knew how much longing she had to break out of the Hermione part, and to show herself more than anyone else had allowed her.” The film was a great success and allowed Emma to showcase her new style which included a new pixie cut hairstyle – quite the opposite of Hermione’s thick locks. In an interview with Metro UK Emma mused about the change in hairstyle, “I didn’t get to experiment with dyeing and chopping off my hair like most teenagers […] I also felt, right, I’m 20, I’m not a little girl any more. I’d been on Harry Potter for ten years so I needed to mark the end of it in some way. I needed a drastic change and that’s what the crop was all about.” The Perks of Being a Wallflower also saw her win a number of awards including the ‘MTV Trailblazer Award’ at the MTV Movie Awards, A Teen Choice Award for ‘Actress Drama’ and ‘Favourite Drama Movie Actress’ at the People’s Choice Awards.

BEAUTY, HEALTH AND LIFESTYLE

With many great films already under her belt and fresh out of her studies, Emma was free and ready to embark on a more profound challenge. Having been an advocate for equality and involved with the promotion of girls’ education for many years, in 2014 Emma revealed that she was involved in the UN Women’s feminism campaign, HeForShe.

Growing in confidence on the political stage, Emma had discovered who she wanted to be, the things she wanted to stand for and the way she wanted to present herself through her style. Her sense of style has come from the passion to dress for herself, not for anyone else, and her drive for fashion has certainly seen a transition throughout the years.

HeForShe is a solidarity movement which was initiated in September 2014 by UN Women – a year which also saw Emma become appointed their Global Goodwill Ambassador – and seeks to engage men and boys to become advocates of change and encourage them to take action against the inequality women and girls face on a daily basis around the world.

With a keen eye for timeless elegance, Emma has been involved, on more than one level, in the fashion industry. She has claimed numerous fashion awards including ‘Best British Style’ at the British Fashion Awards and was presented with the ‘Style Icon’ award from British Elle. “I’m not sure I deserve it really, but I’ll take it. It’s such an honour” she said after, in February 2017, she was named ‘Woman of the Year’ at the Elle Style Awards.

To mark the launch of the one-of-a-kind HeForShe campaign, Emma delivered an extremely captivating and awe-inspiring speech about gender equality in front of the United Nations, where she addressed the UN Secretary General, President of the General Assembly, Executive Director of UN Women and many other distinguished guests. Emma’s speech detailed the moments in her life where she started to become more aware of gender inequality, “I started questioning gender-based assumptions a long time ago. When at eight I was confused at being called ‘bossy’ because I wanted to direct the plays we would put on for our parents, but the boys were not. When at 14 I started to be sexualised by certain elements of the media. When at 15 my girlfriends started dropping out of their sports teams because they didn’t want to appear muscly. When at 18 my male friends were unable to express their feelings I decided that I was a feminist and this seemed uncomplicated to me.”

As well as partnering and modelling with the illustrious fashion house, Burberry, several times, Emma has graced the covers of some of the most renowned publications in the world including Teen Vogue – for whom she was the youngest star to feature on the cover – Vogue, Marie Claire, Attitude, Elle, Vanity Fair and Emirates Women. Emma has now come full circle in the film industry venturing back into blockbuster hits once again with her role in Beauty and the Beast. The film was this year’s most highly anticipated and made over $900 million worldwide. In many ways, the release of Beauty and the Beast completes Emma’s on-screen journey, from precocious child-star to on-screen Belle of the Ball.

William Roache MBE hits the sea with Princess Cruises

It’s no secret that a cruise is the perfect choice for avid travellers looking to experience what other parts of the world have to offer in the space of a week or more. While the experiences guests have on land, once the ship is docked for the day, create special moments that are cherished forever, Princess Cruises has emulated such an experience on the water, too. With a significant amount of time spent at sea, a cruise ship needs to have it all. Thankfully, Princess Cruises does! The cruise line sails to destinations such as Mexico, Japan, Hawaii, Australia and South America as well as providing the opportunity to travel the world with their World Cruise which visits 40 destinations. However, it doesn’t matter where in the world you are travelling to each cruise promises the best in food, drink, activities and entertainment, something Coronation Street’s William Roache MBE found out when he recently travelled with the cruise line. William Roache MBE, who is best-known for his role as Ken Barlow in Britain’s longest-running soap, Coronation Street, was invited onto the Crown Princess Cruise Ship to provide the entertainment for an evening. Boarding the ship in Gibraltar he journeyed back with it its docks in Southampton. The 113,561 tonne Crown Princess accommodates over 3,000 guests, has 19 decks, 900 balconies, a three-storey atrium, a height of 195 feet and a span of some 952 feet. A magnitude that William couldn’t quite fathom when he saw it in front of him “I have never been on a cruise ship like it before. When we got on board I thought that with over 3,000 holidaygoers on board it would be cramped, but the ship was so well organised that I was never aware of large groups of people.”

18/05/2017 15:28

Perplexed by how the magnificent vessel didn’t topple, William and his adult children were invited, by the Captain no less, for a private viewing of the command room – The Bridge. “I had to air my concern about a boat of this magnitude tipping over in the wind, after a comparison between the ship and a fishing float, my mind was at ease. On my visit to the bridge I perhaps went in a bit naïve, expecting to see a steering wheel. The wheel that was controlling the boat, in comparison, was no bigger than you use on a racing game in the arcade! That astounded me I must admit.” Never wanting their guests to be at a loss for what to do whilst on board, day or night, the Crown Princess houses incredible facilities including eight restaurants, – William even hailed the pizzeria as the best Italian restaurant he had ever eaten at. Also on offer are high end shops including Chanel and Calvin Klein, a gym, casino and the iconic Princess Theatre. There is also a designated area called the Sanctuary where guests, who want to escape from the hubbub of the happenings on board, can go to read and relax in peace and quiet. Somewhere William found great a retreat. Come the evening the ship comes alive with lively entertainment which William spoke extremely highly of, “The entertainment was unbelievable, I was able to watch La La Land, a film I had wanted to see for a long while, under the stars during an open-air screening on the top deck. I was also invited to watch a show in the Princess Theatre, which is a spectacular addition to the ship.” It was in the Princess Theatre that William took to the stage, in front of a vast audience, to speak about his time on the street from the very first episode in 1960 to the present day. “The audience were wonderful – the turnout was more than I had expected, as we had experienced some really rough

weather earlier in the day. I think some of the audience felt at ease knowing I was feeling just as sea-sick as they were! But, we all overcame it together and had an enjoyable evening.” William engaged the audience with his tales from the cobbles: “Of course, life on the set of Coronation Street dominated the evening with many of the audience members wanting to know more about my current storyline. There is something rather enjoyable about others making wild guesses about ‘who tried to kill Ken’, when I am standing on stage knowing the answer they all crave.” William rounded up his review of the trip by praising it highly, confidently stating he would do something similar again, when he can fit it into his busy schedule that is! It was Champions After Dinner Speakers Agency who secured William his position on the cruise ship, and as entertainment partners of Princess Cruises, have done the same for a number of other well-known celebrities. The line-up over the next few months on board include: • Beverley Callard • Harry Redknapp • Graham Gooch OBE • James Cosmo • John Virgo • Terry Butcher • Paul Burrell • Mike Gatting OBE • Sherrie Hewson • Edwina Jones

won, not one, but four awards; Best Female Artist, Best Sound & Lighting Production, Best Choreography and the ultimate accolade - Official UK No.1 Tribute Act! Nominations are now open for the awards, with 11 up for grabs including:

Even better than the real thing – welcome to the world of the tribute artist Fancy seeing Adele belt out her greatest hits? Perhaps you’d love to see Led Zepplin or catch Bruno Mars perform his catchy pop tunes? While seeing your favourite artist perform live can be an unforgettable experience, it can also be expensive and for many of us means being sat in a seat far away from the stage! Of course, there is the matter of actually getting tickets - many gigs sell out within minutes of going on sale, for example, tickets for Adele’s 2016 tour at the 13,000 capacity Glasgow SSE Hydro venue, sold out in just two minutes! If catching your favourite band or artist isn’t feasible, don’t panic, here in the UK we have many wonderful tribute artists; outstanding vocalists in their own right, who take on the persona of some of the biggest names in music. Expertly capturing the look, sound and performance of the originals, tribute artists put a great deal of hard work and attention to detail into honing their act. Aiming for perfection, they capture the essence of the originals’ performance. Keen to recognise and reward the nation’s tribute artists, The National Tribute Music Awards UK are set to once again hit Leicester’s stylish Athena venue on 5 July 2017. During the event, selected winners will perform for guests, which will include other tribute acts, celebrities and professionals from within the entertainment industry. Last year’s event was a huge success, seeing tribute acts from rock, pop and everything in between, come together for a glittering gala event. Big winners on the night included; Best Male Artist; A Vision of Elvis and Talon, a tribute to The Eagles who took home; Best Band, Best Marketing & PR and Lifetime Achievement Award. Sweeping the board on the night however, was Totally Tina - a tribute to Tina Turner, who

• Best Female Artist • Best Male Artist • Best Tribute Band • Best Sound & Lighting Production • Best Video Production • Best Website • Booking Venue of the Year • Best Marketing & PR • Lifetime Achievement Award • Tribute Agent of the Year • Music Industry Awards To find out more about the awards, including how to nominate your favourite act, visit www.nationaltributeawards.co.uk/ awards As well as the prestige that comes with being recognised as a leading tribute act, award winners will also receive a trophy and the option of using the ‘kite mark’ logo supplied by The Entertainment Agents’ Association Ltd - endorsing the performer(s) as an act of quality. Becoming a tribute artist is a serious business, with performers putting a great deal of effort, time and money into honing their act. While having a physical similarity to an artist can help, it isn’t essential, with the best tribute artists able to convince the audience they are seeing the real deal thanks to their convincing performance and attention to detail. Achieving this standard of performance doesn’t come overnight, top tribute artists spend countless hours perfecting their act, scrutinising their chosen artist’s mannerisms, stage presence and vocal patterns. Physically transforming into the chosen artist is another essential element to the act and, as every good tribute artist knows, much can be achieved with a great wig, the right costumes and stage make-up. With audiences expecting to experience something as close as possible to the real thing, spending time on getting the costumes just right is time well spent. From Sinatra’s stylish tux to Madonna’s iconic conical bra, audiences expect nothing less from their tribute act. Something many tribute artists have fun with is naming their act from fantastically funny puns to clever plays on words, such as Oasis tribute Oasish, The Antarctic Monkeys and T-Rextasy, the name must be both catchy and reflect the original. Always popular, in 2017, you can experience live music like never before by booking a tribute act for your next event; whether a party, wedding, business function or corporate event. At Champions Music & Entertainment you will find every kind of music from the reggae stylings of Bob Marley to the cool pop of Ed Sheeran.

BEAUTY, HEALTH AND LIFESTYLE

40 YEARS SINCE WE LOST THE KING OF ROCK ‘N’ ROLL With a career that ended all too soon, Elvis’ legacy still lives on some 40 years following his death. With his movie star good looks, seemingly effortless vocals and infectious good humour, to many it may have seemed inevitable that Elvis’ star would always rise. However, Elvis’ start in life was less than auspicious. Born in 1935, Elvis’ birth was difficult, (his twin brother Jessie was stillborn), and his early years were one of poverty as his family, parents Vernon and Gladys Presley, tried to make ends meet in Deep South Mississippi. Despite his tough start, Elvis had ambition – one fuelled by his passion for music. A devout Catholic, Elvis was inspired by the sounds of his childhood – Gospel. Developing a deep appreciation for music within the church and making some of his earliest performances there, even at this young age, Elvis felt at home performing. As a teen, now living in Memphis, Elvis could regularly be found on downtown Beale Street, a place renowned for its diverse range of clubs and restaurants. So dynamic and diverse was Beale Street that it was influential in developing many new genres, including the then burgeoning R&B scene. Exposed to so many new influences and sounds, it was only a matter of time before Elvis discovered his sound and in 1953 as an 18-year-old fresh out of High School, made his first recording - a $4 dollar, two-track recording intended as a gift for his mother. It is unlikely that Elvis, or indeed anyone, could have predicted the worldwide phenomena that would be born out of this loving gift, but from this point on, his life would be irrevocably changed forever. During the recording at the famous Sun Studios, producer Sam Phillips heard Elvis’ voice and set up an impromptu meeting between local bass player, Bill Black, and guitarist, Scotty Moore. The team reportedly covered numerous songs and riffed throughout the day, however nothing the group produced was good enough for Sam. It wasn’t until the team took a break and Elvis absent-mindedly played a sped-up version of That’s All Right that the record label realised they had a star in the making. This sparked Sun Records to sign him immediately, it was a massive break for Elvis as the label also managed the likes of Johnny Cash and Roy Orbison. Becoming aware of Elvis’ talent, artist manager, Colonel Tom Parker was made his personal manager. In just two years Elvis and Colonel Tom Parker achieved a top 40 single together with Heartbreak Hotel. Becoming an international sensation

28 |

and selling over one billion records worldwide, Elvis became the best-selling individual artist of all time. All his albums achieved either gold, platinum, or multi-platinum status. He was also immensely popular with critics - achieving 14 Grammy nominations in his lifetime, of which he won three leading him to receive the Grammy Lifetime Achievement award at just 33. In 1987, the American Music Awards posthumously granted Elvis the Award of Merit. As well as this, Elvis performed in 31 feature length movies and two touring documentaries all of which were well received. 1964’s Viva Las Vegas earnt $11.33 million at the box office, around $87.71 million today, making it Elvis’ highest grossing film. With his career on the up, it was something of a surprise when in 1958 Elvis was drafted into the U.S. army for his National Service. After spending six months in boot camp, Elvis was deployed in Germany for 18 months; still receiving mountains of fan mail. His time in Germany would prove to be formative for the young Elvis, who was still only in his early 20s. Not only did his mother, to whom he was extremely close, pass away – an event that those close to him claim had a significant impact on him, but he also met his future wife. Elvis first met Priscilla Beaulieu – the daughter of a U.S. Air Force Officer - at a party in his home, eight years later the pair would be married. While in many ways Elvis’ life was the stuff of dreams, behind the scenes he was descending in to what would become a nightmare. By the mid-70s Elvis was reportedly addicted to many prescription drugs, something that inevitably took its toll on his marriage. In 1973, Elvis and Priscilla were divorced, however, the pair remained firm friends, even holding hands at the divorce proceedings. The next few years of Elvis’ life saw him doing what he did best – performing. Touring almost constantly, Elvis sold out venues wherever he went and added a third Grammy to his collection. Sadly however, Elvis’ life was to be cut short all too soon when, on 16 August 1977, aged just 42, Elvis passed away from reported heart failure. Despite the intervening 40 years since his untimely death, Elvis’ estate still earns millions each year from music sales, licencing and royalties. His Graceland Mansion in Memphis has been turned into one of the most popular tourist attractions in the U.S. giving fans young and old a place to celebrate the legacy of The King of Rock ‘n’ Roll.

8 HIP-SWIVELLING ELVIS FACTS: 1.

Elvis purchased Graceland Mansion in 1957 for $102,500, which is around $875,500 today, he lived in that house until his death in 1977. Since the 14-acre property has been turned into an entertainment complex, it is said to be worth around $55 million today.

2.

Elvis never toured outside North America. It is rumoured that his manager, Colonel Tom Parker, was an illegal immigrant. He allegedly turned down many lucrative international deals for fear that he would be denied entry to the U.S. upon his return.

3.

Milton Berle, host of Texaco Star Theatre, advised Elvis to perform without his guitar, reportedly saying, “Let ‘em see you son.” Elvis’ movements on-stage caused outrage in the States, causing the tabloids to dub him Elvis the Pelvis.

4.

Elvis’ 1960 hit, It’s Now or Never, inspired a prisoner to pursue a career in music upon his release. The prisoner was Barry White, serving a four-month sentence for stealing tyres.

5. It is estimated that there were about 170 Elvis tribute acts in 1977, today it is around 250,000 making him one of the most impersonated artists in the world. 6. Elvis is the only artist to be inducted into five Halls of Fame: Rock n’ Roll, Country, Gospel, Rockabilly, and R&B. 7. Elvis had a pet chimp called Scatter, which developed a taste for Scotch and bourbon. 8. His last words were, “OK, I won’t,” when he assured Ginger Alden, his girlfriend, that he wouldn’t fall asleep reading in the bathroom.

King Cole k o o b g n So

Mr Unforgettable… With his amazing skill on the piano and effortlessly smooth voice, Nat King Cole held the world’s ear for three decades and his legacy of poignant, sentimental, playful tunes continues today.

Born Nathaniel Adams Coles in Montgomery, Alabama on 17 March 1919, Cole had humble origins. Like so many families in the Deep South at the time, the Cole family were very poor and struggled to make ends meet. Despite the everyday battle to survive, music was important to the Coles and Nat was taught to play the organ and piano from the age of four by his mother. Nat’s natural musical ability was evident even from this early age and while his first brush with music was with Gospel, it was just a matter of time before this young boy from the Yellowhammer State was influenced by the emerging New Orleans jazz sound. Nat’s musical career began when, in 1936, after dropping out of school aged just fifteen, he found a position as a pianist in Shuffle Along – a jazz review. While enjoying some success, Shuffle Along soon came to an end, but by this time Nat had been bitten by the performing bug. Following a period playing solo in the bars and clubs of California, Nat formed what was to become the King Cole Trio. The year was 1937. The King Cole Trio went on to record four albums from 1943 to 1949, including hits such as Sweet Lorraine, I’m in the Mood for Love and If I Had You. Nat’s smooth baritone has been enjoyed by audiences for 80 years and in 2017 music lovers can see Nat’s biggest hits brought to life once again through the sweet, soul stylings of Britain’s very own Andy Abraham. Platinum-selling recording artist, Andy first caught the nation’s attention when he took part in The X Factor in 2005. Wowing 30 |

audiences each week with his soulful voice, Andy went on to finish second in the hotly contested final (a vote of just 1.2% separated first and second place!), but where he finished didn’t really matter – the nation was hooked – Andy Abraham was a star! Andy’s career has gone from strength to strength, seeing him perform around the world, record four critically acclaimed albums and embark on a successful career in musical theatre. This year marks the launch of Andy’s latest show – The Nat King Cole Songbook. With his warm, smooth voice, Andy is the perfect vocalist to take on the Nat King Cole back catalogue. Reinterpreting many of the classics, following a brief intermission, Andy will step back into the spotlight to perform a selection of upbeat soul classics. The perfect show for music fans of all ages, Andy’s new show is set to be popular with holiday villages and cruises though it makes a great addition to all kinds of gatherings, including corporate events and casino tours.

Bring me sunshine...

Eric and Little Ern as Morecambe and Wise When it comes to comedy partnerships few can rival the impeccable timing, good natured teasing and hilarious material of Morecambe & Wise. Eric was born John Eric Bartholomew in 1926 and Ernie, Ernest Wiseman in 1925, these masters of observational comedy entertained generations through their TV & radio shows, live productions and movies. Such is their enduring appeal, that even today, for families across Britain, Christmas Day isn’t complete without the Morecambe & Wise Christmas Special – of which they made 10 consecutive shows! However, the legends of light entertainment might never have formed had the pair, then working as solo artists, not been booked to appear as separate acts at the Nottingham Empire Theatre in 1941. Not making their partnership official until 1946 (a stint of Army service prevented it), the duo set about crafting their act in front of a live stage audience. As their popularity grew, they made their TV debut in 1954 in Running Wild although it was their later shows, Two Of A Kind (1961-68), and The Morecambe & Wise Show (1968- 1983), that truly cemented their place in the nation’s hearts. In fact, they were voted the favourite entertainers of all time in a 1996 poll to mark 60 years of BBC TV. The pair made the switch to TV look remarkably easy, bringing those audience interactions they thrived on during live performances to their recorded shows (think Eric’s sideways glances into the camera). Such was the popularity of their TV shows they drew many big names including The Beatles, Dame Shirley Bassey and actress Glenda Jackson. Awarded OBEs in 1976, the partnership lasted over forty years until Eric’s death in 1984. Ernie passed away some years

32 |

later in 1999. Leaving behind a legacy that aspiring comedy acts can only dream of, the pair remain popular today with viewers missing the warmth, humour and sheer silliness they brought to light entertainment. While the originals can never be brought back, expertly capturing their look, mannerisms and humour is tribute act Eric and Little Ern. Played by Morecambe & Wise fans and professional performers, Ian Ashpitel (Ernie) and Jonty Stephen (Eric), the pair bear an uncanny resemblance to the originals and have enjoyed terrific success with their shows. Officially coming together as Eric and Ernie in 2013, though they had performed together as the double act before, the pair took their show to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe where it received rave reviews and sold-out. A tour then followed which was nominated for an Olivier Award in 2014 The pair pay close attention to the subtleties of their comedy heroes, so much so that Eric Morecambe’s family are massively supportive of the act. Defining them as the definitive Morecambe & Wise act, the pair are consummate performers that never break character.

Undoubtedly you will have heard of and will refer to the 4Cs – the traditional method of evaluation for a diamond. To recap they are Cut, Colour, Clarity and Carat: Cut refers to the cutting of the diamond; the most crucial stage in the revelation of its polished brilliance, fire and scintillation. Colour is a crucial element in a diamond’s appearance. Apart from exceedingly rare fancy colour diamonds, the rarest diamonds are colourless. Clarity measures the purity of the diamond; how free it is from tiny blemishes. The clarity grade a diamond is given is determined by the degree to which these natural features are visible at ten times magnification. Carat is a measure of weight. One carat (1ct) equals 0.20 grams and is divided into 100 points, so a half-carat (0.50 carat) diamond is also known as a 50 points diamond. A diamond can appear larger or smaller than its weight, depending on cut. But, in reality, whilst a diamond can be evaluated by its particular combination of the 4Cs, it is by no means the full story.

What really sets Forevermark diamonds apart is that they come with a promise over and above the 4Cs – a promise that not only gives assurances of exceptional quality, but also assurances of integrity – every Forevermark diamond has been responsibly sourced and has been cared for at every step of its journey along the pipeline. Choosing a Forevermark diamond ensures you that: • Your diamond is of exceptional quality less than 1% of the world’s diamonds are eligible to be Forevermark • Your diamond is truly unique – the individual number identifies it always to be uniquely yours • Your diamond is genuine, natural and untreated • Your diamond has been cut and polished by the finest master craftsmen in the world

Every Forevermark diamond is inscribed with the Forevermark icon and a unique identification number. Invisible to the naked eye, it can only be seen using a Forevermark Viewer which can be found in Authorised Forevermark Jewellers. The inscription proves that this diamond has met Forevermark’s standards; the individual number identifies it always to be uniquely yours. Forevermark have dressed talented women praised for their talent, beauty and poise from the Oscars ceremony to high profile events across the globe. Actresses, singers and international acclaimed women have worn Forevermark diamonds including Kate Winslet, Kate Hudson, Kristen Stewart, Sienna Miller and Jennifer Garner. HIGHFIELD DENTAL CLINIC Find your freedom to smile at Highfield Dental Clinic The importance of a beautiful smile shouldn’t be underestimated. Smiling is an essential part of interacting with others, helping to reassure, build bonds and communicate feelings. Whether it is missing, crooked, stained or cracked teeth, for those unhappy with their smile the impact can be allconsuming. Not only leading to a reluctance to smile, problem teeth can cause more serious issues with speech and eating. Highfield Dental Clinic, based in Edgbaston, Birmingham, are experts in smile rejuvenation, helping to perfect their patients’ smiles, giving them the confidence to laugh and smile again. Treatment plans may include one or a combination of treatments depending on the desired result a patient is aiming to achieve. From the initial free consultation with the clinic’s Treatment Co-ordinator, all options are discussed and explained with fees outlined before any work begins. Practising dentistry for over 20 years, Highfield’s Dr Naz and Dr Fash Shoja-Assadi understand the importance of a confidence boosting smile.

48 |

Having undergone orthodontic treatment herself, Dr Naz knows how dramatically it can change a person’s self-esteem. Patients often report having been unhappy with their smile for many, many years, feeling there is nothing that can be done about it. With patients often feeling hopeless, frightened and insecure, the Highfield team aim to create a friendly, supportive and calming environment where even those patients with a fear of the dentist and/or procedure can feel comfortable as their smile dreams and goals come true. The private clinic offers outstanding levels of client care and along with delivering solutions in terms of dental aesthetics, Highfield Dental Clinic also provide general dentistry too, including emergency care and children’s dental treatments.

Re-shape, re-sculpt and re-define what you know about fat loss with CoolSculpting® When it comes to looking and feeling great we all know that eating the right foods and getting active will leave us fitter, trimmer and healthier.

of research and development, with over 1.5 million patients worldwide reporting that they are happy with the results of their treatment.

However, there are times when despite our best efforts, stubborn areas of fat remain, spoiling the silhouette we are trying to achieve.

Developed by Harvard University scientists, the science behind CoolSculpting® is based around the idea of freezing pockets of fat cells which can then be broken down and eliminated naturally from the body.

Thankfully, there is a non-invasive solution that can help people achieve their body goals and is available from leading dental and aesthetics practice - Highfield Dental Clinic, based in Edgbaston. In partnership with Yugen, Highfield’s Dr Assadi and Dr Holloran offer a full range of medical and aesthetic services which complement the wide range of services already offered at the clinic. Along with smile and facial rejuvenation treatments, including fillers and botox, the increasingly popular, body sculpting treatment, CoolSculpting® is now also available. A non-invasive and safe procedure, CoolSculpting® delivers outstanding results in just a matter of weeks. While the impressive results - which include a smoother, sleeker silhouette - are enough to recommend CoolSculpting® to those looking to lose inches around those stubborn areas, the treatment offers other benefits too. Popular around the world, CoolSculpting® involves no needles, creates minimal discomfort, requires no anaesthetic and no downtime following treatment, unlike other sculpting procedures such as liposuction. Designed to permanently remove those stubborn areas of ‘pinchable fat’, CoolSculpting® technology is born of 17 years

50 |

So, what can clients expect from a CoolSculpting® appointment? Following an initial screening process, cooling plates are gently applied to the desired area which set to work removing heat from the fat cells, effectively freezing the fat, causing the fat cells to die. CoolSculpting® practitioner at Highfield’s, Dr Holloran, who is both a GP and aesthetician, is clear on the benefits this revolutionary procedure offers: “Over the years, I have met many patients who have been disappointed with the results from traditional and Vaser liposuction procedures.” She continued: “In many cases patients suffered from pain, bruising, swelling, leakage and bleeding at the suction sites, resulting in infection, immobility, time off work and in some cases, a persistent lumpy contour – with CoolSculpting® clients can get permanent fat reduction without these kinds of complications and side effects.” “With CoolSculpting®” concluded Dr Holloran, “clients can resculpt their body, targeting those troublesome areas including inner thighs, stomach and waist, to achieve the shape they have always wanted; giving them the body confidence they deserve.”

Established in 1897, this year Johnsons Jewellers will be celebrating 120 years of selling watches and fine jewellery. Originally set up in the Abbey Green area of Nuneaton before moving to its present location shortly after the war, Johnsons has grown over the years. The business was officially set up by Harold Johnson in 1897, although records suggest that there were watchmakers in the family prior to this time. Today the business is a far cry from the small shop set up in the front room of the Johnson household and has been expanded over time to include 17 watch brands from some of the finest watch houses around the globe, plus a wealth of diamond jewellery. Johnsons Jewellers still remains firmly in the hands of the Johnson family. Robert and Pam are still actively involved in the business, with Libby and Catherine their daughters, being mentored to take the helm for the next generation.

As part of the 120 year anniversary celebrations, we hope to put on an exhibition display in store of old boxes, receipts or anything else that may be found. We often have elderly customers who come in to store to say that they still have the ‘Wedding spoons’ that were given to them when they purchased wedding rings from my Grandfather. Things like this are great memoirs and it’s amazing to think that we have helped create lots of memories through the generations in the local community and beyond.” Libby

With two goldsmiths and one watchmaker on site, Johnsons are able to carry out all manner of repairs without the need to send items away. The workshops are fitted with state of the art equipment, including a laser repair machine which ensures repairs can be taken out swiftly at reasonable costs. Our senior goldsmith also designs and creates bespoke pieces of jewellery for many clients. If you are set on a certain design which you are just unable to find, then our goldsmith can create that special one-off piece. Johnsons Jewellers sells a wide range of jewellery and watches suitable for all age groups and tastes. Silver branded jewellery includes the popular Swarovski, Thomas Sabo, Carat* and Hot Diamonds. With a large selection of diamond rings sourced from all over the world, from classic certificated single stone diamond rings to beautiful fancy shape cluster rings, the choice is vast. With a dedicated Rolex boutique to showcase the beautiful Swiss watch collection, the Johnsons Jewellers staff are fully trained to provide exceptional service in a relaxed environment. The selection of watch brands available range from fashion brands such as Emporio Armani and Hugo Boss, through to fine Swiss watch brands Omega, Tudor, Breitling, Longines and TAG Heuer. If you have any stories/memories to share with Johnsons about purchasing from them over the last 120 years then get in touch with Libby by email libby@johnsonsjewellers.co.uk.

BEAUTY, HEALTH AND LIFESTYLE

HEAD BACK TO NATURE WITH HEAT HOLDERS

Summer brings, for most of us, a desire to be outdoors enjoying the weather and nature. The perfect way to make the most of, what could be short-lived sunny days, is to pitch-up a tent and enjoy some R&R under canvas. Camping is a great way to connect with friends and family and there are options available for campers of all levels. While experienced campers may choose to venture off the beaten track and get away from it all, those less experienced with the camping scene may prefer a campsite which provides hot showers, electric hook-ups and other facilities. Of course, while camping is about going back to basics there is no need to be uncomfortable and with our top five tips we can help elevate your camping experience from a damp drama to glamping glory! 1. Be prepared for the cold If you are camping in the UK, unfortunately, even in the height of summer, you need to prepare for cold weather. Even the warmest of days can result in chilly evenings

58 |

and a night spent freezing in a tent can be a very long night indeed! Pack a sleeping bag in a suitable tog for the temperature. Hooded or ‘mummy’ style sleeping bags are also a great choice as they prevent heat loss throughout the night, further helping to keep you snug. Other in-tent essentials to keep you warm include socks. Slipper socks such as Heat Holders’ ultimate thermal socks, which include grip pads which make moving around the tent easy and can be worn in your sleeping bag to keep you toasty all night long. 2. Choose your site wisely As with any type of holiday we all have our own ideas of what constitutes the perfect place. When it comes to campsites there are plenty of options to choose from. Aside from location, other important factors which may influence your site choice include what the on-site facilities are like, whether the site is for adults only or welcomes families and whether open fires are allowed.

INSPIRATIONAL.UK.COM

58-59 Heat Holders inspy.indd 58

15/05/2017 18:44

3. Find your perfect tent While the weather forecast may predict week-long sunshine, when camping it pays to be prepared so investing in a tent that offers complete protection against the elements will be money well-spent should rain and wind attack.

include some ‘extras’ to make the trip as comfortable as possible. The Heat Holders range of thermal wear and accessories are perfect to pack; lightweight and taking up little space in your camping kit, they will ensure you always feel warm and comfortable. Other ways to improve your camping experience are by taking seating (inflatable sofas work well) to make evenings by the fire a little more comfortable and lighting. You can opt for battery/solar powered lights

When investing in a tent there are a few things to consider including its size. Tents are measured by the number of people they can hold, so the thing to bear in mind here is that this measurement is based purely on the number of people. It doesn’t include the luggage and equipment necessary for a camping trip. Think also about how you will use the tent. Some tents come with separate bed and living rooms – both of which can be exceptionally useful in providing space and in helping to keep everything somewhat organised. While your instinct may be to go for the biggest and best tent you can find, before you buy be sure it is not too big for the site you intend to camp in, as some sites have restrictions. Be sure also that it is easy to erect, a practice run in the garden could pay dividends and always aim to arrive at your site in daylight – putting up a tent in the dark is never easy! 4. Take something to sleep on Before you set off, your yoga mat may seem like the perfect bed for under canvas sleeping, however, after a night on it the likelihood is that you will be wishing you’d gone for the ultra-thick, deluxe air mattress your camping partner opted for. Any time of the year a good night’s sleep is important and given that while camping you are likely to be up early (there’s no black-out blinds for tents to block that early morning sun), it is essential you can snuggle down to a great night’s sleep. Sleeping options include inflatable mattresses which offer the benefit of being light and easy to pack though can be a pain to pump up, or a camp bed which is bit bulkier to transport but sees you sleeping off the floor – something many campers value. 5. Invest in some creature comforts While it is nice to experience life in the great outdoors, trying to prepare a meal over a tiny camp fire in darkness will soon wear thin. When building your camping kit

If you find yourself bitten by the camping bug this summer, be sure the cold doesn’t bite by visiting www.heatholders.co.uk and ordering men’s, ladies and kids’ thermal socks which will keep your toes toasty whatever the weather throws at you! Also, available on the all-new Heat Holders website is a range of thermal wear including hats and gloves, neck warmers, thermal underwear and blankets. SPRING/SUMMER 2017 ISSUE 11

IT’S A MAN’S WORLD

FIVE YEARS...

since the 2012 London Summer Olympics It seems hard to believe that five years have passed since the London 2012 Olympics, when our capital was treated to a fortnight of pulsating sport that continues to inspire a generation. Super Saturday saw Team GB win six golds, Usain Bolt’s Olympic record confirming his status as the greatest sprinter of all time and the Mobot, which are just some of the memorable moments from the games. Crowds were treated to the greatest medal haul by Great Britain since 1908 with a total of 65, an amazing feat only superseded in Rio 2016 with 67 medals but there is no doubt that the legacy of London games lives on. With the entire city undergoing a face-lift to make sure it was ready for the Olympics; The London Stadium was built becoming the biggest multi-purpose sporting stadium in the country. The scene for many of the games’ biggest moments, as well as the spellbinding opening and closing ceremonies, the stadium will once again be opening its doors, and play host to the 2017 Anniversary Games, World Athletics Championships and World Para Athletics Championships. The Anniversary Games is an annual event which plays an important part in athletes’ sporting calendar with some of 60 |

the biggest names in athletics coming together to compete in front of over 60,000 people. Not only does it provide a platform for fans to witness the stars in action and remember the nostalgia of the Olympics, but it also forms a vital part of the 2017 IAAF Diamond League calendar. Britain’s most decorated athlete, Sir Mo Farah was catapulted to worldwide fame after his two gold medal victories in the 2012 Olympics. He has now confirmed his participation at this year’s event in what really will be a must-see for fans. Mo has also announced that this year’s Anniversary Games, which take place on 9 July, will be his final appearance at the event before he retires from track and field at the World Athletics Championships in August. Hosting three athletics events this summer, the London Stadium will also welcome the stars of the sport during the 2017 IAAF World Championships and World Para Athletics Championships. More than 3,000 athletes will descend on the capital between the 4-13 August taking part in 22 track and field disciplines. Undoubtedly, the highlight of the World Championships will come in the 100m final on Sunday 6 August where Jamaican sprint sensation Usain Bolt will race competitively for what he says is the final time. With half a million tickets put on sale for

the Championships, it is sure to be an unmissable spectacle. The world’s fastest man is bound to put on a sensational show with his larger than life personality, which has won him so many fans over the years. Usain Bolt’s incredible 100m sprint world record time of 9.58 seconds has been acknowledged with a special anniversary pricing scheme, with kids’ tickets sold at £9.58 to commemorate his achievement. Other prices nod to the various records set by British Olympic legends Colin Jackson, Jonathan Edwards and Sally Gunnell. Kids were further acknowledged with a nationwide competition where children were asked to create a mascot for both the World Championships and Para Athletics Championships. Working alongside CBBC show Blue Peter, legendary Olympic and Paralympic athletes Dame Jessica Ennis-Hill and Richard Whitehead MBE, challenged 6-15 year olds to use their imagination and create a fun, creative and original mascot that will be used throughout the games. Not only will they get to see their creation used at the Championships they will receive a VIP tour of the Olympic Park and tickets for them and their family and, of course, a coveted Blue Peter badge!

With the World Para Athletics Championships taking place the following week, it gives fans a chance to see the best disabled athletes in the flesh including Jonnie Peacock, Richard Whitehead and Kadeena Cox. It will also mark the first time ever that both competitions have taken place in the same city. Since the Olympics five years ago, the state-of-the-art stadium has undergone some exciting renovations. Improvements include a new roof, improved spectator facilities including bigger food and drink outlets and a flexible seating system which allows fans to get closer to their favourite athletes. The biggest sporting competition of the year, the World Championships marks the showpiece event in the athletics calendar, and with the biggest names in the sport competing it is sure to be an occasion to be remembered for all involved.

IT’S A MAN’S WORLD

An Olympic Tale ...that has never been forgotten Prior to the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games, then 26-yearold Team GB sprinter Derek Redmond was in the form of his life. With this year marking 25 years since the Games, Inspirational Magazine looks back on the event that changed the Olympian’s life forever. American Quincy Watts was Derek’s main competition for gold in the 400m, which he began with a bang, posting the fastest time of the first round. He also won his quarter-final and was looking good through the heats with plenty left in the tank. Derek was one of the most promising medal prospects Great Britain had, and as the gun went in the semi, he felt a third British record was within touching distance. It started promisingly, with a trademark fast start from the blocks: “Moving into the back straight I genuinely felt I was going quicker than ever. Suddenly I heard a funny pop and, thinking it was crowd noise, told myself to concentrate. Three or four strides later, I knew it was nothing of the sort; I hit the deck in searing pain, thinking ‘why me?’, ‘why now?’” Derek suffered a badly torn hamstring, but within seconds, he was back on his feet, chasing the pack. “I was convinced I could catch the others, despite the pain. There was no way I was giving up on my dream, so crazily, I hobbled after them. By the time, I’d got to the final bend, I looked over to see they had all finished.” What followed was to become the stuff of sporting legend. As Derek ploughed on in tears, the 65,000 capacity crowd, recognising his ‘never-say-die’ commitment, roared him on. Upon entering the final straight, his father Jim, evaded the security cordon and suddenly appeared at his side. “Today he’d have been wrestled to the ground by stewards but he somehow smuggled himself onto the track, helped me back into Lane 5 and supported me almost up to the line. I was inconsolable in the medical room, but my Father was an absolute rock. We had to leave separately, unfortunately, and I had to run the media gauntlet alone until a two-and-ahalf-hour press conference the next day, where again he was fantastic.” The incident is remembered for summing up the values and spirit of what it takes to be an Olympian. In 2012, viewers of the US TV channel, NBC, voted it their third greatest Olympic moment ever and the 44th 62 |

President of the United States, Barack Obama referenced it as an example of the triumph of the human spirit. “Really, the worst thing for me was not missing out on a possible medal but not knowing how fast I could have gone. My coach was predicting I’d dip under 44 seconds, maybe down to 43.8 - we’ll never know but I felt the best I ever did that day.” 23 years later, Iwan Thomas’ British record remains 44.36. By persevering during the semifinal, Derek aggravated the injury so much his hamstring had detached from the bone. Surgery after surgery followed, but rehabilitation proved difficult to overcome. Such was the severity of the injury, Derek went under the knife a total of seven times in just 18 months. In 1994, his surgeon told him to “get a real job as you’ll never compete for your country again!” Unsurprisingly, these words served only as motivation because Derek knew he wasn’t done yet. Before too long though, Derek was forced into early retirement from athletics, and instead turned towards other sporting disciplines he was keen on. He played professional basketball for the Birmingham Bullets and England, before narrowly missing out on a cap for the England Rugby Sevens team and even a stint in motorcycling, providing confirmation, if it was ever needed, that Derek’s sporting star was shining bright. 25 years on from that fateful night in Barcelona, Derek Redmond will be forever known for his part in one of the most heart-warming moments in Olympic history.

Life-changing exercise and nutrition programme. The Plan Starting from £54.99, the plan is divided into three packages, Bronze, Silver and Gold, each with varying degrees of rewards for buyers and each accompanied by the programme.

The Beginning of Back2Fitness Launched in 2016, Back2Fitness is a new life-changing exercise and nutrition programme, aimed at getting both ex-athletes and ‘Average Joe’s’ back into shape. The very first participant was World Cup winner and Leicester Tigers legend, Neil Back MBE, who, following his retirement from elite sport, found himself losing muscle tone and fitness levels due to a new, busy corporate lifestyle. Feeling frustrated with his decline in physical form and following a chance meeting with strength & conditioning coach, Sam Yassin, Neil kick-started his own personal fitness revolution. The pair, along with fellow co-founder and nutrition expert, Jack Baker, developed a 12-week plan and named it Back2Fitness. Neil is the first success story, dropping 6kg and cutting his body fat from 11.9% to 8.2% over the 12 weeks. He is thrilled with the outcome, “I’m sleeping better, I’m ripped like I used to be but without the same muscle bulk and I feel more energised than I have in years.

64 |

The plan accounts for different needs and body types, focusing on the fine balance between nutrition and training, as co-founder Sam explains, “One of the key goals of Back2Fitness, is to inform participants of the vital role macronutrients such as fats, proteins and carbohydrates play in any fitness journey.” Workouts in the plan can be mixed up and feature both high intensity interval training (HIIT) and low intensity steady state (LISS) exercises. Macrocycle Style One better fits those with busy, time-tight schedules who can handle more intensive workouts, while Macrocycle Style Two, is aimed at participants with more time and who require less intensity in their workouts. Neil and Sam’s dedication to educating participants makes Back2Fitness stand out from the rest; they will lose weight and gain muscle mass, but also incorporate positive habits that’ll remain long after the programme’s completion. Back2Fitness also offers bespoke corporate packages for businesses purchasing ten or more gold packages for their employees. They devise fitness and wellbeing seminars and team-building events tailor-made for companies’ precise requirements. For more information, please visit:

IT’S A MAN’S WORLD

This year will see a new addition to the European Senior Tour for 2017, the inaugural Farmfoods European Senior Masters. The three-day event looks certain to attract the biggest and best players from the tour to the scenic Forest of Arden Marriott Hotel & Country Club, Birmingham. Taking place between 20-22 October 2017, the event is the penultimate of a gruelling 15 round season, and plays an important role in deciding who will feature in the season ending MCB Tour Championships in Mauritius. The course will test every experienced participant’s golfing credentials, rewarding the winner with an impressive €50,000 first prize. The Farmfoods European Senior Masters will bring with it a fresh challenge, something that is sure to thrill both amateurs and professional alike. Former Ryder Cup Captains Paul McGinley and José María Olazábal, both now 50 years old are eligible to play, as is former Ryder Cup and 3-time European tour winner player Peter Baker who will be the official event host, playing in his first European Senior Tour event. Other professionals currently entered include Champions very own British Senior Open Champion Paul Broadhurst, three time European Senior Tour winner Gary Wolstenholme MBE, European Tour winners David Gilford, Barry Lane, Costantino Rocca, Jarmo Sandelin, Order of Merit winner Paul Wesselingh and two time Senior Major champion Roger Chapman*.

The Forest of Arden is a fitting stage to host such an illustrious event. With its two courses, the Arden (the Championship course) and the Aylesford, it has hosted the British Masters on five occassions, with past winners including Barry Lane, Colin Montgomerie and 2018 European Ryder Cup Captain Thomas Bjørn gracing the greens. With a breath-taking backdrop of tall oak trees along the back nine, beauty hides the tough challenge of the lush, yet testing rough, before climaxing on the immaculately maintained putting greens. While it may not have hosted an event as significant as the Farmfoods European Senior Masters for a number of years, the world-renowned hotel and golf resort is more than ready to re-make its mark in professional tour golf. Brand agency Champions (UK) plc are bringing its knowhow to the organisation of the event, with the experience of successfully hosting the Farmfoods British Par 3 Championship at Nailcote Hall for the last 10 years. As title sponsor, national frozen food specialist Farmfoods brings its reputation of quality and class to the event, continuing a fruitful partnership with Champions in the world of professional golf.

2016 Order of Merit Champion and proud Midlander, Paul Broadhurst, will be looking to continue his fine form from last year with a win on home turf.

BRITISH PAR 3 CHAMPIONSHIP

Nailcote Hall once again plays host to the Farmfoods British Par 3 Championship. Ever-growing in popularity, this year sees the event enter its 20th year in the modern era and the 84th overall. Tucked away in the idyllic Warwickshire countryside this year’s Championship promises to be bigger than ever with a whole host of famous faces and big name golfers taking on the course. Taking place over four days between 8-11 August the entire event is organised and managed by Champions (UK) plc with gala balls and charity auctions taking place alongside the golf throughout the week. With the prize fund this year standing at €150,000 and the winning professional taking home €50,000 there is plenty to play for. The crowds gathered at the course are in for a treat as they are able to witness a high standard of golf 76 |

played in a relaxed but competitive atmosphere by some of the most recognisable faces from the worlds of sport and entertainment. The event opens with the celebrity-amateur golf day (8 August, 2017), before two professional-amateur golf days (9 and 10 August) and finally, the celebrity-amateur grand finale golf day (11 August). As well as the sporting entertainment on offer during the day, the evenings will also see celebrities and players alike attending charity gala balls with all proceeds going to children’s charity Rainbows Hospice for Children and Young People who care for children suffering with life threatening and terminal illnesses. some incredible experience auction items. At the midway point of the event on Wednesday there will be a player’s banquet where the competitors will be able to sit back, relax and enjoy themselves as they are entertained by Britain’s Got Talent comedian Kev Orkian. On the Friday evening following the final day’s play, a star-studded black tie ball will conclude the week with former Great Britain Olympian and 4x400m relay World Champion Derek Redmond acting as auctioneer for a second charity auction and Sky Sports golf commentator Nick Dougherty will be on hosting duties. The 2017 edition of the event will once again be hosted by the Ryder Cup’s most successful ever European captain Tony Jacklin CBE for the 10th consecutive year. Tony will be competing on each of the four days giving fans the chance to witness a British and US Open champion in all his glory. Last year Welshman Mark Mouland became the first man to win the professional competition twice, with an impressive score of -11, breaking the Cromwell course record. This year he will be vying to defend his title up against the likes of Ian Woosnam OBE, Paul Lawrie OBE and Costantino Rocca. Former US Open champion Michael Campbell will also return. Current Senior Open Championship winner Paul Broadhurst will be aiming to win his first British Par 3 title alongside fellow Champions of Golf stablemates Peter Baker and Gary Wolstenholme MBE. British female golfing legends Dame Laura Davies and Trish Johnson will also be making their British Par 3 Championship debuts in August. 78 |

Last year’s Celeb Am competitions saw fine performances from Nigel Mansell CBE, Catchphrase legend Roy Walker and Strictly Come Dancing star James Jordan. This year will see the return of a host of stars including Westlife star Brian McFadden, Boyzone’s Keith Duffy, Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel, England’s most capped player Peter Shilton OBE, Strictly Come Dancing judge Len Goodman and the 1992 Formula One world champion Mansell also returning. The event is unique in the fact that it allows both males and females to compete alongside and against one another on one of the only mixed gender competitions not just in golf but in sport as a whole. With plenty to enjoy throughout the week there is something for everyone with an inflatable golf simulator, chipping and putting challenges for kids to get involved with. It’s not all about the celebrities and professionals though there is a prize on offer to the best performing amateur. The Norma C Herd Silver Salver was last year shared between Strictly Come Dancing star James Jordan and amateur golfer Ricky Sturrock, with past winners including nine-year-old Jack Drury in 2015 and World Women’s golf star Charley Hull as well as Aaron Rai who has recently won the Barclays Kenya Open on the European Challenge Tour. The event can deliver a real boost to rising stars with local qualifiers taking place with junior spots on offer for the professional championship. A series of young professionals have used success at the Farmfoods British Par 3 Championship as a springboard. Drawing confidence from his 2013 victory, Tommy Fleetwood won his maiden title on the European Tour at the Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles the following month. Having claimed the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship in January of this year, Tommy is now ranked 29th in the world. Likewise, the 2014 champion, Eddie Pepperell, has really pushed on since his Nailcote Hall win, progressing from the Challenge Tour to the European Tour, and continuing his good form to thrive in the professional ranks. Tickets for the event are available at www.britishpar3.com but if you can’t make it to Nailcote Hall don’t fear because highlights of the competition are available on Sky Sports 4 and Sky Sports Mix. The website will also feature a whole host of information so you don’t have to miss a second of the action. Live scores, player & sponsor interviews and photo galleries are all included to provide a comprehensive platform to keep you up to date throughout the competition. You can still get involved in this year’s Farmfoods British Par 3 Championship with only a few available places still up for grabs for both the Celeb-Am and Pro-Am competitions. There are still sponsorship opportunities available and for more information please contact the Farmfoods British Par 3 Championship team. This year’s event is sure to be the best yet and our star studded line up from the worlds of sport and entertainment means it is set up to be a wonderful festival of golf.

IT’S A MAN’S WORLD

75th edition of the Monaco Grand Prix Formula 1 is a money-spinning sport spanning almost every continent in the world across its nine-month, 20 race season. Arguably the most anticipated meeting of every year is the Monaco Grand Prix. The event, traditionally held in May, on the edge of the glittering French Riviera, has seen the world’s fastest cars take to the tight, winding streets of the Principality since 1929. 2017 marks the 75th edition of the event.

1929 – First ever race at the circuit History was made on 14 April 1929, with the first ever motorsport race in Monaco taking place. Founded by Anthony Noghès, the meeting was invitation-only and saw 16 starters, over half of whom were French. The maiden victor of the Monaco Grand Prix was a Brit, known under the moniker of Mr Williams, who was the first to complete 100 laps, coming across the line in just under four hours.

Known for its socialite-friendly party lifestyle, Monte Carlo is a home away from home for many of the current crop of drivers, with British champions Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button residing in the area. To mark the 75th edition of the iconic race, Aspirational Magazine looks back on the best stories the track has written since its inauguration.

1950 – Inaugural F1 season, a legend is born Fast-forward 21 years and Formula 1 as we know it today is born. The first official World Championship began and took place in Monaco as part of a globe-trotting schedule. In doing so, the Championship a legend was born in Juan-Manuel Fangio. Argentina-born Fangio, winner of five drivers’ titles, took his first pole position, the fastest lap and a win that day, as he began his journey to becoming one of the best drivers to have ever taken part in the sport.

1982 – Rain causes havoc, leaving one car standing The elements often play a part in an F1 race, but the 1982 edition was turned on its head by a torrential band of rain, which caused five changes of the lead in the space of the last two laps of the race. The great Alain Prost, a man who’d go onto have a lot of history at the circuit, was the first to be caught out, spinning his car and gifting the lead to Ricardo Patrese, before Patrese in-turn stalled, and fell back to third. The two other remaining runners both ran out of fuel on the last lap, leaving Patrese to make it over the line, as the only driver left standing and be crowned the race winner.

1984 – Prost vs a rookie Senna Prost makes the list again, alongside British F1 icon Nigel Mansell and a young Brazilian rookie by the name of Ayrton Senna. Treacherous rainy conditions were causing the field trouble. Mansell had an adventurous first 11 laps, passing Prost for the lead, before crashing out early to hand leadership back to the Frenchman. Meanwhile, Senna was cutting his way through the rest of the field, as conditions worsened, but successfully made it all the way to second place and was just seven seconds behind the leader, Prost. The race was red flagged, leading to disappointment for fans, but the beginning of something special for a certain Mr Senna.

1992 – Senna v Mansell duel Back to Mansell, and the Brit was re-writing the history books with records for the most wins, poles and laps led in his superior Williams car. He’d won the preceding five races of the season and was on course to win a sixth at Monaco. On the track he led the chasing pack, before a slow pit stop saw him lose out to Ayrton Senna, in an ailing McLaren. Senna, used all his considerable talents to keep the rampant Mansell behind him, leading to a classic duel between the two, until the chequered flag waved. Senna hung on to first place although it was Nigel Mansell who went on to become the season’s champion.

1996 – Panis wins, Herbert 3rd, one of his best results Bad weather conditions struck again in 1996, with a race that began with 22 starters on the starting grid whittled down to just 13 by lap five! Among those left were the Brits Johnny Herbert and David Coulthard, but with the stubborn conditions, more and more cars were dropping out of the race, offering both a hint of a race win. However, it was not to be for either, as the 300-1 longshot, Frenchman, Olivier Panis, found himself at the front of the pack, winning his solitary grand prix.

2008 – Hamilton wins after crashing In 2008, Lewis Hamilton was a rookie taking the F1 world by storm. By the time he arrived in Monaco, a civil war with his teammate was brewing and the Ayrton Senna comparisons were already beginning. In the opening laps of a wet race he collided with the barrier, leading to a tyre puncture. Unbelievably, the strategy of sticking the Brit on fresh tyres and a lot of fuel worked to a tee. Fellow drivers found the track increasingly tough to negotiate, leaving Hamilton to take the chequered flag for only the second time in his burgeoning career.

2016 – Revenge served for Hamilton, as Brit prevails again Last year’s edition of the Monaco GP was eventful as ever, with drama and storylines galore. Fresh from a double retirement in the previous race in Spain, Mercedes warned its drivers Nico Rosberg and Hamilton to watch themselves on the tight streets of Monte Carlo. Rain caused a start under the safety car, and allowed Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo an opportunity to lead from the front after his shock pole. Strategy played a key role in Hamilton finding his way to the front of the pack, while Rosberg, battling a brake problem was fading, falling backwards at a rapid rate. A slow pit-stop from Red Bull for Ricciardo, enabled Hamilton to stay out in-front, with the Aussie battling back towards the end of the race. However, Hamilton thwarted any attempts at an overtake and won convincingly.

How Checkatrade are helping thousands of people through their charity work

When a freak tornado tore its way through the small town of Selsey, Sussex in January 1998, no one could have guessed that this would lay the foundations for Checkatrade, the largest online resource of trusted tradespeople in the country. The immediate aftermath saw a huge trail of destruction throughout the town, with £10m worth of damage caused. From this, entrepreneur and local businessman Kevin Byrne was inspired to start a brand-new resource of trusted tradespeople, as the devastation had attracted scores of rogue traders to the town.

Charity Abseiling, Sunday 11th September 2016

Fast forward to the present day, and Checkatrade have continued to grow, with the company now generating a whopping £1.5bn every year for UK trades. Checkatrade are not only a household name across the UK when it comes to home improvement, the company is also dedicated to helping others through its charity work.

Craig is adamant the company are more than just a trusted tradespeople resource, saying: “I have worked with Checkatrade for a while now and I am continually impressed, not just by the great service they offer customers. It’s more than helping consumers find a trustworthy tradesperson, I’m impressed by their commitment to raising money and supporting good causes.”

The company’s values are based upon helping others so it’s fitting that Checkatrade have a large focus on charity work. One of Kevin’s biggest achievements to date is the 12 marathons in 12 months he ran, fundraising for a building project for a local school. Checkatrade themselves donated a site manager and materials and convinced many of their members to give up their time to complete the build. Checkatrade’s charitable contributions were commended winning the ‘Greatest Contribution to Sussex Charity’ award at the Sussex Business Awards. Checkatrade regularly contribute to a whole host of other charity and fundraising events. Here is just a selection of what they’ve been up to over the last 12 months.

90 |

For their biggest fundraising event of the year, Checkatrade took over The Emirates Spinnaker Tower, in Portsmouth for a charity abseil. The colossal structure dwarfs the London Eye and the Blackpool Tower standing at over 560ft. 40 plucky participants took on the daring challenge, among them Big Brother winner and Checkatrade ambassador Craig Phillips.

Almost £8,000 was raised for the Lighthouse Foundation, who work to support victims of the 2015 Nepal earthquake, that left thousands either dead or injured, and hundreds of thousands more without a home.

Checkatrade Mad March Mare, 4th March 2017 Taking place at the opposite end of the country, the Checkatrade Mad March Mare, saw competitors take on a 10km obstacle course. Staff from Checkatrade’s offices in Nottingham, Newcastle and West Sussex were present and joined in with the fun! Money raised went towards the Tynedale Hospice at Home, based in West Northumberland and Ponetland and St Oswald’s Hospice, Gosforth, Newcastle-upon-Tyne. The funds will help provide essential care for those with terminal or life-limiting illnesses.

Checkatrade Trophy Final, 2 April 2017 In 2016, the company broke new ground by becoming the title sponsor of the Football League’s EFL Trophy. The Checkatrade Trophy was a roaring success, culminating in a record-breaking attendance of 74,434 fans at Wembley Stadium to see Coventry City prevail 2-1 over Oxford United in April 2017. Not only was the day a fantastic footballing spectacle but it also provided the opportunity to raise awareness for a great cause. When Checkatrade member and landscaper Addam Smith discovered that his close friend and fellow tradesman Keith Ellick had been diagnosed with terminal cancer he formed the charity ‘Band of Builders’ and helped raise almost £60,000 to help Keith put his affairs in order. Sadly, Keith passed away a few days before he was due to carry the ball out at the final and so Addam and his son George did so on his behalf. Band of Builders continue to fundraise and are currently hoping to raise £100,000 for Keith’s family which will help them to buy their house from the council and provide them with more stability. Their charitable efforts will also raise money for tradespeople who have found themselves in similar situations to Keith.

Teams of four were carted off to prison, before having to ‘escape’ the confines by any means they could. From an unknown location teams had to find their way back to the starting point at Fontwell Racecourse, Chichester. A great day was had by all involved, with thousands being raised and plenty of fancy dress fun. Checkatrade realise how important it is to provide a helping hand to those less fortunate and have a range of fundraising events lined up throughout the year. For more information on any of Checkatrade’s charity events visit www.checkatrade.com Checkatrade helps combat the UK’s rogue trader problem by continuously vetting and monitoring local tradespeople such as builders, plumbers and electricians as well as service providers. If you’re thinking of having work done in your home and are looking for a reputable tradesperson, please visit www.checkatrade.com

Charity Jailbreak, 7 May 2017 In May, Checkatrade again teamed up with radio station Spirit FM to raise funds for the Sussex Snowdrop Trust, which provides days out for families whose children suffer from various life-limiting afflictions. Putting on their annual charity jailbreak competition, participants were left with no phone, no money and only had their brains to rely on during this challenging and fun filled event.

Luxury design solutions for every home When it comes to the home not every kitchen is created equal. While mass market designs add aesthetic appeal in the short-term, their lifespan could be limited and depending on the style chosen, they may be lacking in the quality, functionality and personality your home deserves. Kitchens have long since stopped being just a functional room and are now very much the heart of the home. In many homes the kitchen is now used by families for everything from food to prep to relaxing and entertaining. So integral is the kitchen it deserves something extra-special, which is where experts in luxury kitchens, Ocean Kitchens & Bedrooms come in. With many years’ experience in kitchen planning, design and installation, the West Midlands’ based Ocean Kitchens & Bedrooms offer a comprehensive service. Providing a wide range of drawer and door styles, as well as worktops, handles and accessories, the firm supply kitchens from luxury manufacturers including 1909 Luxury, First Impressions, Burbidge, Metris Luxury and Second Nature.

Your signature look… When it comes to choosing a new kitchen tastes vary. Shaker-inspired, these painted kitchens are manufactured to the highest standards from smooth grained timber and offer flexibility of design; helping to create the bespoke kitchen of your dreams.

Whatever its size, your bedroom is likely to be a multi-tasking room, serving as a place to sleep, a dressing area and even as a home office. With so much to store, the key to a functional bedroom is great design and plenty of storage. Ocean Kitchens & Bedrooms offer made to measure storage solutions in a choice of contemporary and traditional designs, including high gloss and wood grain finishes.

It’s Of-fish-al: is the place to be seen Just like talking about the weather and being eternally optimistic when it comes to the World Cup, there are just some things that are quintessentially British. Topping the poll of the things that put the great in Great Britain has to be the perfect marriage of fish and chips! Inspired by 1950s style American diners, Finest Catch restaurants offer retro-inspired dining facilities that the whole family will enjoy. From the black, white and chrome décor to the choice of booth, counter or table seating, Finest Catch creates the perfect atmosphere to relax and enjoy great food. Along with their famed fish & chips, you will also find a wide range of traditional British and American fare. Menu options include BBQ rack of ribs, foot long hot dogs and US-style milkshakes, so whether you are in the mood for traditional English grub or something from across the pond, you’re sure to be satisfied. Those with a sweet tooth won’t be disappointed with the choices on offer either. The ice cream parlour menu features treats such as banana split, hot chocolate fudge sundae, knickerbocker glory and New York style cheesecake! Whether you prefer cod or haddock, served with peas, gravy or somewhat controversially, curry sauce, one thing is for sure - us Brits love this takeaway classic. In fact, we love the dish so much it is estimated that we consume a whopping 382 million portions of fish and chips every year, making it a firm family favourite. Putting their spin on our national dish is Finest Catch, who have two diners, one in Solihull and another in Henley-inArden. As the name would suggest, Finest Catch is the perfect place to enjoy freshly battered fish served with perfectly cooked chips made from the very best British potatoes. For those watching their waistline, diners can opt for their fish to be baked or grilled rather than with batter (and for those less bothered about the calories, the diner offers free unlimited bread and butter and second helpings of chips!). While fish and chips is what the restaurant chain is renowned for, they also offer an exciting menu of starters, mains, desserts and drinks to keep everyone happy.

Dining is made all the sweeter with weekday offers including half-price main courses all day from Sunday through to Tuesday and half-price desserts from Wednesday through to Saturday. As well as the option to dine in, those looking for a quick bite can take advantage of the takeaway menu options and grab a delicious meal to eat while on the run. With a licensed bar serving a range of beers, ciders and wines. Finest Catch is open 11.30am to 10pm, seven days a week and is built on a simple ethos; great food, great value and the very best customer service...oh, and that no-one leaves hungry! When we think of the world of investment banking and wealth management, traditionally we would have conjured up the image of a city gent operating in what was very much a man’s world. While it is true to say that finance has historically been dominated by men, challenging this view and succeeding, is wealth management expert, Janine Edwards. Now a Principal Practice of St. James’s Wealth Management, Janine’s career in the world of finance began when she was just 21 years old and was made one of Lloyds TSB’s youngest ever managers, running her own branch in Market Deeping, Peterborough. Fast-forward 30 years and Janine is at the top of her game and celebrating three decades in the financial services sector. Building upon the solid foundation her time within the High-Street banking sector gave her, Janine’s career has evolved and she has spent the last 17 years with St. James’s Wealth Management, a leading wealth management firm that works with clients from a wide range of sectors including SME’s and global firms.

As Janine points out, the wealth management sector is one in which she was destined to thrive: “I had a good grounding in banking, but I always preferred seeing clients face to face and joined St. James’s Place because I saw it as an opportunity to give clients much better advice, offer a distinctive investment management approach and a more holistic wealth management service.” She continued: “When St. James’s Place approached me, I knew their reputation was formidable and that they were something special and different.” Now a Principal Practice within the firm, one of the few females to reach this status, Janine has built up an enviable reputation for offering the highest standards of service. Building relationships with her clients that are based on trust and proven expertise, Janine’s business has been built mostly on word of mouth, with existing clients recommending her services; a ringing endorsement for any business. Backed by her growing team (two new advisors are set to join soon covering Birmingham and Warwickshire), Janine has built a business that offers client focussed advice and specialist knowledge around

all areas of wealth management, including matters such as regulatory compliance, investment planning and financial planning for the future. Working with private clients and business owners, to accommodate her ever-expanding business, 2017 sees Janine relocate offices, moving from her Balsall Common base which has been home to the business for 17 years, to a new space in Berkswell, West Midlands. Along with a desire for more space, the move was also driven by Janine’s unwavering commitment to offering outstanding client care as she explains: “Our back-office team is essential to the seamless service we offer clients and over the years the team has grown and we wanted them to have the opportunity to build a more efficient working space, including installing completely new IT systems to help with the speed of paperwork.”

Best Financial Adviser 2016/17

While driven by current needs, the move also gives Janine and team the opportunity to grow in the future. Around eight times larger than the former offices, along with a welcoming and aesthetically pleasing reception space, it offers three meeting rooms as well as an informal gathering space. Also available is a seminar room where the team host client/ contact seminars which is also offered to clients and contacts for their own use. Situated amid beautiful countryside, the office move marks a new chapter for the business, something Janine is looking forward to: “This new space opens up many new opportunities for growth and I am looking forward to sharing the space with clients new and existing as we welcome them at our new location.” To find out more about the range of services available from Janine Edwards, Principal Partner of St. James’s Wealth Management, call 01676 530 606 or email Janine.edwards@sjpp.co.uk.

BUSINESS AND FINANCE

A New Approach to Brand Services More often than not, this causes confusing, disjointed and inefficient delivery, which dramatically reduces the return on investment for the client and can have a detrimental effect on the brand.

Champions (UK) plc is a multiple award-winning family-run brand agency based in the East Midlands and London that delivers results and establishes long-term relationships with its clients. With a passion for brands, they understand that people drive business. Just as people make emotional investments in their brands, Champions make emotional investments in their clients. They become part of your team and build your future together.

Reshaping the Landscape Back in 2003 and seeking to overturn industry norms, Founder and Managing Director Matthew Hayes defied the tendency towards niche service provision by creating an agency with full spectrum capabilities. He wanted to make life easier for brands. He told us, “Tradition has it that an agency is supposed to occupy a niche. An agency is meant to specialise in one area, and one area alone. While this is self-limiting for the agency, more importantly it makes things tough for the client. Every brand is different and has its own unique branding requirements and challenges. The last thing a business needs is the added complexity of juggling several agencies in the hope of reaching its target audience. With the traditional agency model, clients are often faced with clashes of creative interpretation of the campaign brief. 118 |

Another major flaw in the traditional model is the lack of integrity in agencies’ pitches. The niche agency’s objective is to sell as much of the service it offers as possible, not to provide the client with what they need. For example, an advertising agency always wants to sell advertising, even though in many cases the budget or end goal may not be best served using this medium. As a full service agency, we can ensure we allocate a client’s budget effectively to maximise results and their returns.“

Choosing A Different Tack Breaking the mould, Champions came up with a unique model. They created an agency with expertise across the board, one capable of delivering everything brands need from one place. Champions (UK) plc was established to make an impact in an initial five service areas.

CREATIVE : MARKETING : PR : EVENTS : CELEBRITY Without doubt, Matthew’s vision has paid off. Despite an unpredictable economic climate, they have grown into a £20 million turnover concern with more than 80 full-time staff. Despite exponential growth, they’ve kept the family atmosphere and both the company and Matthew himself have been singled out for a number of high profile awards at national level. Their focus on driving results through strong client partnerships has seen them deliver success to well over 500 high profile brands, many of which remain with them today.

IMAGINE | INNOVATE | INFLUENCE We are thrilled to announce the launch of Influencer Champions – an agency created to bring brands, bloggers and social media influencers together. 10 years ago, the word influencer perhaps best described film stars, entertainers and sporting celebrities who were respected and admired by the public. This respect and admiration led to increased interest in the clothes, cars, jewellery, holidays and the like, that these individuals consumed. Over the last decade the explosion of social media has generated a new and extremely powerful group that are able to create brands over night with the stroke of their keyboard.

FOR THE BRAND In the digital age we live in, your brand needs to reach the right people in the right places. We will pair you with influencers who can help place your product, service or campaign at the forefront of your industry. Increasingly brands are turning to influencers and using this new marketing strategy. World-recognised influencers including the likes of Zoella, Joe Wicks and Bethany Mota are now the ‘golden tickets’ in advertising. Give your brand the influencer factor today.

FOR THE INFLUENCER Similarly, if you are an influencer wanting to work with the country’s leading brands, then contact Influencer Champions. We will proactively deliver brand partnerships that are perfectly suited to you and your online audience.

IT’S TIME TO HARNESS THE POWER OF THE INFLUENCER.

With stunning features and splendid views of the Leicestershire countryside, it is the perfect venue for a range of events. From a fairytale wedding to a corporate gathering, Mythe Barn is unbeatable, as the Midlands Air Ambulance service recently discovered. Easily accessible and with great transport links, this picture-perfect venue is located just 30 minutes from Birmingham, Leicester and Coventry.

Amy Tait from Zizzi Restaurants who recently used the barn and surrounding event fields for the annual Zizzi gathering said:

The event execution leading up to and on the day was brilliant. Mythe Barn was great for every aspect of the event. The event exceeded both my own and the delegates’ expectations. Everyone was blown away by how amazing every aspect of the event was.

Drawing 2016 to a close with a bang was the End of Year Ball, hosted by the Champions Club, an event the club has held for several years. This year it was the multi-award winning venue, The Belfry Hotel & Resort which provided the setting for the event which saw 150 guests in attendance including all of the club’s regulars.

Amelia Frost and Becky Stafford from Champions (UK) plc with their guests

Marking the end of a fantastic calendar of events, the Champions Club, established by brand agency Champions (UK) plc, wanted to ensure all their guests had an evening unlike any other. The club organised a line-up of entertainment to get everyone on the dancefloor including British soul band Urban Intro and young soprano Faith Tucker who blew audiences away with her stunning operatic vocals. During her performance, she was joined by fellow crossover artist Hercules Smith who found fame in the 2012 edition of The Voice of Europe. Rachael Glynn and Sue Colebeck

On the night, Champions Club members were able to raise significant funds for Loughborough-based charity, Rainbows Hospice for Children and Young People.

Joe and Joanna Garland from Mythe Barn and their guests

Olympic legend Derek Redmond doubled up as the host of the evening and as the auctioneer. As a host he ensured the guests were entertained throughout the night, while as an auctioneer he guided bidders through the auction process. Daylesford Experience with Bentley Birmingham Daylesford Farm, Gloucestershire Giving guests the chance to experience the sleek drive the Bentley Bentayga SUV delivers, Bentley Birmingham invited esteemed guests for an experience day at Daylesford Farm in Gloucestershire. The day kicked off at 9.00am when guests were greeted at the farm’s cookery school where they all enjoyed freshly ground coffee and pastries before the real fun began. Guests were then whisked off through the beautiful Cotswolds countryside in the Bentley Bentayga.

Vanita Sadhra, Narynder Johal, Katie McPhilmey and Tammy Hope

Upon their return to the farm, attendees donned their chef whites for a hands-on cooking class where they were given interactive food demonstrations from the farm’s chef, before getting involved by preparing some of their own treats – something they were then able to enjoy with a glass of Prosecco at the end of the session. To complete the day of activities, the farm then hosted the guests in The Bamford Haybarn Spa where they individually experienced a restorative deep tissue massage to ensure they left for the day feeling deeply relaxed. On 6 May, Japanese sushi bar, OKO, marked the opening of its new restaurant with a fantastic launch party. The new restaurant is located on the ground floor of Birmingham’s plush Nuvo Bar and is set to make a huge impact on the city’s restaurant scene. The restaurant vision came from successful businesswoman Stephania Christoforou who has managed the successful Nuvo Bar for six years and is now extending her expertise to OKO. Guests arriving at the exclusive launch party

At the well-attended launch, guests were welcomed to the chic venue with a Champagne reception to settle them into the event.
