Sophia Hayes Editor Summer is finally here, and with it comes your spring/summer edition of Inspirational Birmingham! As ever, you’ll find this edition packed with interesting features along with profiles on some of the region’s leading businesses. In this edition we are channelling ‘girl power’ as we profile the Mother of Dragons herself, Game of Thrones’ Emilia Clarke. We also take a look over the legacy of another incredibly talented woman, Beatrix Potter, whose creativity, and savvy business sense, has seen her literary creations enjoyed by generations of children (and grown-ups!). We also hope to inspire you with our travel pages and, with this in mind, influencer, Scarlett London, shares her top city breaks. We also rundown some cruise inspiration for those looking to hit the seas this summer. And, if you need a new wardrobe for all that travel, check out our Harvey Nichols gift guide for the top picks of this season’s best style statements. On a sporting note, there’s our look ahead to the World Cup 2018 and we also give an introduction to Powerboat P1. The world’s fastest growing marine motorsport, Powerboat P1 provides plenty of action-packed excitement for competitors and spectators alike. We round things up with our social pages. Showcasing the high-profile events, we attend, host and organise, I am particularly pleased to share a round-up of our 15th birthday bash! The event also marked the official launch of our internal rebrand which is based around the ‘Perfect 10’ - a suite of ten services that make it easier than ever before for our clients to build their own, bespoke suite of services to meet their exacting needs. With so much packed in, and plenty of inspiration for a fantastic summer, whatever adventures await you this season, be sure to take Inspirational Birmingham along for the ride!

ALL HAIL THE QUEEN EMILIA CLARKE
In her role as Mother of Dragons in blockbuster series, Game of Thrones, Emilia Clarke has established herself as an actress to take notice of. We discover the woman behind the crown… Occasionally a role comes along that completely changes the landscape for an actor. Think Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman, or Matt Damon in Good Will Hunting. For London-born Emilia, that role was Daenerys Targaryen – Mother of Dragons in recordbreaking HBO series, Game of Thrones. A worldwide phenomenon, since it reached TV screens back in 2011, Game of Thrones (GoT) has been a force of nature – with millions of fans across the globe obsessed with the happenings in Westeros.

FASHION AND ENTERTAINMENT
Of course, back in 2010 when Emilia was cast in the role, no one was sure whether this fantasy series, with its themes of sex, incest, betrayal and plenty of bloodshed, would appeal to audiences. Thankfully, the series has proven to be a runaway hit. Speaking to vulture.com back in 2011 about her role and the impact it has had on her life, Emilia said: “All of the press and stuff — that’s the scary stuff. The acting is what I got trained to do, but this is something quite different. Hopefully the experience of filming has made me more professional, it’s made me more ready for the rest of my career. It seems like everything I’m doing at the moment is for the first time, so there’s a lot to take on.” An often-discussed aspect of Emilia’s role in GoT is the amount of screen time Emilia spends naked. Taking to Instagram, Emilia wrote: “Sometimes explicit scenes are required and make sense for the characters/story, as they do in Westeros. If it’s gratuitous for gratuitous sake, then I will discuss with a director on how to make it more subtle. In either case, like a good Mother of Dragons, I’m always in control.” The debut Emilia’s passion for acting began when she was small, and she took every opportunity to take part in school productions. Finishing her education at Drama Centre London, a drama school in King’s Cross in 2009, Emilia’s big break was just around the corner… Appearing in daytime soap, Doctors, Emilia got her first taste of paid acting work. Now a paid actor, this initial role led to her being cast as Savannah Roundtree in made-for-TV movie, Triassic Attack, a role which led to her receiving critical acclaim. Beyond the throne While it was as Daenerys that Emilia has gained wider prominence, the actress has been steadily learning her craft and working on interesting film projects for many years. Emilia’s back catalogue of movie roles includes starring as Sally in 2012’s Spike Island, a movie about friends heading to a The Stone Roses gig. Emilia followed this up with Jude Law vehicle, Dom Hemingway (2013). The movie saw Emilia play the role of Evelyn, Jude Law’s character’s daughter. The black-comedy drama received mixed reviews, however a review on LA Times. com said of Emilia’s performance: “Evelyn has both the cynicism and softness of someone raised with disappointments. Evelyn’s indie rocker performance by Clarke is one of ‘Dom Hemingway’s’ most hauntingly sensitive moments. It is wonderful, yet completely out of character for the film, though Dom has a tendency to turn to mush around Evelyn too.” Choosing roles on gut instinct, rather than as part of some wider career masterplan, in 2015 Emilia turned her attention to action. Specifically, as the iconic role of Sarah Connor in Terminator Genisys. Speaking to LA Times.com about being offered the role, Emilia said: “I was, like, ‘You are offering me a part playing Sarah Connor? Who the [hell] turns that down?’ And everyone’s, like, ‘Um, everyone would turn that down because it’s too much pressure.’ And I’m, like, it’s my innocence and optimism again! There I go, just thinking I can do it all!”

And do it all she can, as she proved in yet another switch from the high-octane action of the Terminator series to the romance and drama of 2016’s Me Before You. Based on the beloved book of the same name, Me Before You deals with some challenging themes and sees Emilia taking the lead role of Lou, a carer tasked with looking after quadriplegic, Will, played by Hunger Games’ Sam Claflin. Speaking to LA Times.com, Me Before You writer, JoJo Moyes describes her thoughts on Emilia’s casting: “Frankly, I was a little bit sceptical, like, the Mother of Dragons? How is that gonna work?” But it did, with Emilia winning over audiences as the film, which cost $20 million to make, went on to earn $208 million at the box office – demonstrating Emilia’s star power. Not content with one iconic role, in 2018 Emilia will step into another massive franchise – the world of Star Wars. Set before

the events of A New Hope, Solo: A Stars Wars story focuses on Han Solo’s, (played by Alden Ehrenreich), back story and sees Emilia take on the role of Qi’Ra. As with all before it, this latest film is shrouded in secrecy until its release, with the cast remaining tight-lipped on the plot, though speaking to Rolling Stone, Emilia teased: “All I can say is that she’s awesome. Like, legit, that’s all I can actually get away with saying.” And the award goes to… Emilia has had her fair share of award nominations, including three Emmy awards, three Critics’ Choice Awards and five Screen Actors Guild Awards for her role in GoT. With critical and fan acclaim, it is no surprise that 2017 saw Emilia become one of the highest paid actors on TV, pulling in a whopping £2 million per episode on Game of Thrones. One thing is for sure – Emilia has a belly full of fire for the future.
Get to know Emilia Seven need-to-know facts about Emilia… 1. Emilia turned down the role of Anastasia Steel in Fifty Shades of Grey telling Marie Claire:
‘’I’ll never say, “I’m never doing nudity” because I’ve already done it, but I thought I might get stuck in a pigeonhole that I would have struggled to get out of.’’
2. Loved by GoT fans, Emilia gets £2 million per episode. 3. She has a bumblebee tattoo on her little finger. 4. She has 15.9 million Instagram followers. 5. During her Game of Thrones audition, she did the funky-chicken dance – clearly it worked! 6. In 2013, Emilia made her Broadway debut playing Holly Golightly in Breakfast at Tiffany’s. 7. A newly discovered species of sea slug has been named Tritonia Khaleesi in honour of Emilia’s GoT character.

The Tale of
r e t t o P x i r t a e B
Her tales have been delighting children for generations, and in 2018 Beatrix Potter’s enchanting world of Peter Rabbit has been brought to the big screen in the animation/ live action movie Peter Rabbit. This big screen outing brings Beatrix’s most beloved characters to the world of cinema, courtesy of the vocal talents of some of today’s biggest stars.
Playing the title role of the mischievous Peter is James Corden, with Domhnall Gleeson playing his nemesis, Mr McGregor. Also lending their vocals is Star Wars’ Daisy Ridley as Peter’s youngest sister, Cotton-tail, Margot Robbie as Flopsy and Elizabeth Debicki as Mopsy. British comedian and actor, Matt Lucas plays Peter’s cousin, Benjamin Bunny, and singer, Sia, takes on the role of Mrs TiggyWinkle. This isn’t the first time the works of Beatrix Potter have been brought to life on the silver screen. In 2006 Renèe Zellweger took on the role of playing Beatrix in the drama, Miss Potter, which detailed key parts of Beatrix’s life. With this latest reimagining of one of Beatrix’s most loved characters, Inspirational Birmingham takes a look at the woman behind the tales…

A BLOSSOMING TALENT
Born Helen Beatrix Potter into an affluent family in London in 1866, from an early age Beatrix had a love of nature and wildlife and would spend holidays in Scotland and the Lake District sketching and developing her artistic prowess. In these early years the seeds of what would become the phenomenally successful, The Tale of... series were sown, with two of Beatrix’s pet bunnies; Benjamin Bouncer and Peter Piper becoming objects of her sketches. Despite growing up in Edwardian England – a time when women were limited in their career and education choices – Beatrix went to study at the Royal Botanical Gardens in Kew. It was here that she honed her talent for not only beautiful drawings, but for being technically accurate too. DRIVEN TO SUCCEED While we now recognise Beatrix’s talents, this wasn’t always the case. In fact, Peter Rabbit was rejected by six publishers before Beatrix herself published her own edition! Initially just 250 copies were made, however the book’s success brought the novel to the attention of publishers Frederick Warne & Co, (who had previously turned it down). Republished in 1902 with new coloured illustrations by Beatrix, it was an instant bestseller.
The following year, The Tale of Squirrel Nutkin and The Tailor of Gloucester were also published. It was through her publisher that Beatrix found love. Defying her parents’ wishes, Beatrix agreed to marry her editor, Norman Warne, though sadly he passed away just a month after they got engaged. Beatrix wrote and illustrated many books, and while the magical world of Peter and his friends brought her much pleasure, she had other passions too… A COMMITMENT TO CONSERVATION While she had always had a love of nature and the natural world, Beatrix’s interests in this area grew throughout her life. Devastated by the death of her fiancé, Beatrix began making changes to her life, namely by, buying Hill Top Farm in the Lake District, in 1905, a place she found great comfort. Initially splitting her time between London, to care for her parents, and her new home, Beatrix took her responsibility as a rural homeowner seriously, making it her business to learn all she could about running a farm. It was while expanding her Lake District property portfolio that Beatrix found love for a second time, with local solicitor William Heelis. William and Beatrix were married in 1913.
Making Hill Top Farm her permanent base, Beatrix was a practical farm owner, getting involved with its day to day running. So much so that she became a major sheep farmer, developing specialist knowledge of Herdwick breed sheep. A passionate conservationist, upon her death in 1943 she bequeathed 14 farms and 4000 acres of land to the National Trust to be cared for and preserved for future generations. She also left her original illustrations to the National Trust and Hill Top Farm was opened to the public, with her artwork on display. A HEAD FOR BUSINESS Peter Rabbit is the world’s oldest licensed literary character – thanks to Beatrix’s entrepreneurial mindset. She designed and created a Peter Rabbit doll in 1903 and registered it with the patent office. She also pushed for other merchandise to be produced including tea sets, a board game and toys. These days two million Beatrix Potter books are sold every year around the world, with new audiences delighting in the timeless stories Beatrix created. Through her writing, artwork and commitment to preserving the landscape for future generations, Beatrix’s legacy is one that will live on for many more generations to come.

SMART OR CASUAL?
It’s the dress code that’s guaranteed to confuse ... but what exactly does smart casual mean? Lisa Piddington, from Harvey Nichols Birmingham offers advice.
Whether it’s a business lunch or a garden party, “smart casual” is more often than not the directed dress code ... but does that mean you veer towards casual or play it safe and go smart? Some interpret the term as meaning they can wear what they like, while others will turn up feeling a little overdressed.

The definition of both “smart” and “casual” are quite different – one calls for a suit and tie while the other suggests comfy jeans and a favourite T-shirt. So, is it casually smart or smartly casual? The easiest way to get it right is to plump for a great selection of wear-anywhere basics and then add a final flourish with your choice of accessories. A blazer or sports jacket should be your starting point as this is the easiest way to take any casual outfit over the smart threshold, adding an instant dash of style. Invest in a great pair of brogues or loafers in suede or leather – they work with a suit, a pair of chinos or designer denims and add an air of English eccentricity. Feel free to leave the tie in the office and instead go for an open collared shirt teamed with a plain jumper or cardigan for an on-trend preppy feel.

Designed to permanently remove those stubborn areas of ‘pinchable fat’, CoolSculpting® technology is born of 17 years of research and development, with over 1.5 million patients worldwide reporting that they are happy with the results of their treatment. Developed by Harvard University scientists, the science behind CoolSculpting® is based around the idea of freezing pockets of fat cells which can then be broken down and eliminated naturally from the body. So, what can clients expect from a CoolSculpting® appointment? Following an initial screening process, cooling plates are gently applied to the desired area which set to work removing heat from the fat cells, effectively freezing the fat, causing the fat cells to die. CoolSculpting® practitioner at Highfield’s, Dr Holloran, who is both a GP and aesthetician, is clear on the benefits this revolutionary procedure offers: “Over the years, I have met many patients who have been disappointed with the results from traditional and Vaser liposuction procedures.” She continued: “In many cases patients suffered from pain, bruising, swelling, leakage and bleeding at the suction sites, resulting in infection, immobility, time off work and in some cases, a persistent lumpy contour – with CoolSculpting® clients can get permanent fat reduction without these kinds of complications and side effects.” “With CoolSculpting®” concluded Dr Holloran, “clients can re-sculpt their body, targeting those troublesome areas including inner thighs, stomach and waist, to achieve the shape they have always wanted; giving them the body confidence they deserve.”

BEAUTY AND HEALTH
FIND YOUR WAY TO LASTINGHEALTH In these days of Insta-worthy dining, clean eating and protein shakes, many of us are more conscious than ever before of what we put into our bodies. And yet, despite our best nutritional efforts, we may all still be running the risk of exposure to potentially harmful chemicals every day. Health test provider, Lastinghealth, highlight a report from the World Health Organisation that there are over 150,000 unnatural chemicals found in products we use and in our everyday environment, as well as in the products we use. Over time this build-up of toxins has the potential to impede health. Such chemicals can be found in items from makeup and sunscreen to sandwich bags, drinks bottles and even the air we breathe.
28 | INSPIRATIONAL.UK.COM
Taken in through the air or ingested after they have leached into our food and drinks from plastic packaging, these chemicals find their way into our bodies in all kinds of ways and are often difficult to avoid. With the potential to have a significant impact on the body, avoiding them is something we should all prioritise. For example, Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals (EDCs) such as phenol, can have a negative impact on our sleep, general development, mood and metabolism. Of course, tolerance to the various toxins varies from person to person and levels which may impact on one individual may be perfectly tolerable to another.
So, what’s the solution?
Want to avoid toxins? Try these tips…
Knowledge is power and finding out your personal levels of unnatural chemicals is the first step in reducing them.
1. Ditch the plastic – switch to a reusable, food grade stainless steel drinks bottle or a BPA-free plastic bottle.
Established with the aim of providing individuals with the opportunity to find out whether they are carrying a potentially toxic burden, Lastinghealth offer test kits which help individuals to take control of their wellbeing, now and for the future.
2. Shop organic wherever possible, even better, grow your own!
Easy testing…
3. Choose your beauty products carefully, opting for brands that use natural ingredients.
Testing for the unnatural chemicals that could be playing havoc with your system is easy to do and three test kit options are available; toxic non-metal chemical, urinary organic acids & toxic and essential element hair test.
4.
Once you’ve decided the test that’s right for you, it is simply a matter of supplying hair or urine samples to the lab for testing.
5. Exercise regularly; through sweat toxins can be removed from the body.
Results are presented in a straight-forward way and not only does the personalised report detail your individual chemical profile, it also indicates where such chemicals are mostly found along with tips on ways to counteract their impact. With a detailed picture Lastinghealth’s clients are able to make an informed choice about the products they use and can make steps towards reducing their exposure, helping to ensure that that next selfie posted to social media is a picture of health, both inside and out.
Clean your home using homemade cleaners. A blend of white vinegar, water, baking soda and tea tree essential oil is a natural way to cut through grease and grime.

THE FARMFOODS
European Senior Masters 2017 marked the start of a brand-new event on the European Senior Tour, (now called the Staysure Tour), with the inaugural Farmfoods European Senior Masters taking place at the stunning Forest of Arden Marriot Hotel & Country Club in Warwickshire. Over the years the venue has hosted many prestigious golfing tournaments, including European Tour events and the British Masters on three occasions and it provided the perfect backdrop for this inaugural event. A whole host of professional stars took part including Peter Baker, Paul McGinley, Ian Woosnam OBE, Sam Torrance OBE, Constantino Rocca, Jarmo Sandelin and Barry Lane. The field comprised of 15 Ryder Cup players, making the event the most decorated assembled field in the history of the European Senior Tour. Unlike most Tour events, the Farmfoods European Senior Masters is unique as it gives amateur players the opportunity to play alongside some true golfing legends in a real tour environment. A rundown of the best of the week’s play… Thursday 19 October The event was due to get underway with a Pro-Am on the opening day, with celebrities including Stuart Broad MBE, Dan Walker, Gordon Strachan OBE and Johnny Herbert all set to compete. However, bad weather meant play was suspended with guests retiring to the clubhouse as the evening’s entertainment was brought forward.
32 | INSPIRATIONAL.UK.COM
Guests were treated to a Q&A conducted by former Great Britain Olympic sprinter, Derek Redmond, as he discussed the golfing careers of some of the event’s finest players. These included the tournament host, Peter Baker. The former European Tour winner was also marking his first ever appearance on the European Senior Tour after celebrating his 50th birthday. Former Masters winner, Ian Woosnam, and 2014 Ryder Cup captain, Paul McGinley, also took part in the Q&A session where they relived some of their career highlights. Following this, Perrier awardwinning comedian, Dominic Holland, performed a hilarious comedy set. Guests also enjoyed a delicious three-course meal provided by the Forest of Arden’s team of expert chefs. Not even the torrential rain could spoil the atmosphere! Friday 20 October With the weather easing overnight, the pros were keen to get the tournament started. In the Alliance element of the event an amateur player was paired with one of the Tour professionals for the first 36 holes, which was played over the course of two days. A team prize was up for grabs, but individual scores were also recorded for the professionals, as these scores would contribute to the overall Farmfoods European Senior Masters leaderboard. Spectators were treated to some fantastic golf and at the halfway stage of the first round, Spaniard, Miguel Angel Martin, found himself ahead of the pack. With a first-place prize of €50,000 on offer to professionals, everyone was giving their all and the European Senior Tour’s Order of Merit leader, Clark Dennis, soon put himself in contention. Firing seven birdies and an eagle, he took a three shot lead into the weekend, with the 2016 Scottish Senior Open champion, Peter Eales, in second place.

THURSDAY 4TH – SUNDAY 7TH OCTOBER 2018 MARRIOTT FOREST OF ARDEN
Saturday 21 October The competition took a significant turn on the second day of action as Irishman, McGinley, piled the pressure on overnight leader, Dennis. In blustery conditions, McGinley found himself four shots behind the American going into the day’s play, but soon clawed himself back into contention. Famously known for holing the winning putt for Europe at the 2002 Ryder Cup at the Belfry, McGinley was in fine form making two exceptional birdies on the 7th and 12th leaving him just one shot off the lead ahead of the final round. Another former European Tour winner, Phil Golding, also played fantastically well seeing himself into third place. As the Alliance team competition came to an end, amateur Michael Doyle and former Ryder Cup star, Ronan Rafferty, took home the main prize after a fantastic round in which the pair finished on a combined seven under par total. (Pictured above centre). Sunday 22 October The climax of the event saw only professionals taking part, with all players taking to the course for a final 18-hole shootout for the title. Players teed off in reverse order setting up a grandstand finish for the event. Much of the day saw Dennis and McGinley continue to battle it out for the top spot in what was an extremely tightly contested final round.
34 | INSPIRATIONAL.UK.COM
However, in a twist that no one expected, Welshman Stephen Dodd emerged from the chasing pack to take victory in the most dramatic of circumstances. Beginning the day three strokes behind Dennis, he quickly made ground on the American. Playing in the penultimate group, Dodd holed a remarkable 40yard putt from off the 18th green, the Forest of Arden’s signature hole, to see him tie the lead at the top of the leaderboard with Dennis and McGinley still to play their last hole. With McGinley missing a tricky putt to drop a shot, Dennis could have forced Dodd into a play-off, however he missed his birdie putt, crowning Dodd the first ever winner of the Farmfoods European Senior Masters.

SPORTING WORLD
The wallcharts are being readied, children everywhere are in the midst of working on their sticker collections and excitement is building among all generations, throughout the world as The World Cup returns. This summer marks the 21st edition of the biggest event on the footballing calendar which for the first time will be taking place in Russia. One of the most watched events in the world, over one billion people watched the 2014 final, even non-football fans get excited by the prospect of the World Cup which sees 32 teams from all over the world coming together for a wonderful festival of football. While it doesn’t seem like four years has passed since the 2014 World Cup in Brazil when Germany defeated Argentina 1-0 in the final, this year the event lands in Russia on June 14, coming to a close on July 15. Here at Inspirational Birmingham we have given our rundown on what is sure to be the biggest and most watched event of the summer.
Teams There will be plenty of competition heading into the tournament with several teams standing a good chance of victory. One team who seem to always be touted as favourites are the current holders, Germany, who won their fourth world title in 2014. Renowned for having an excellent team from front to back rather than relying on one or two-star players, Germany will be vying to become the first team since Brazil in 1962 to consecutively win the tournament and successfully defend their trophy.
38 | INSPIRATIONAL.UK.COM
If the trophy is to go to a non-European nation, then record five times winners Brazil are perhaps the most likely team to win. Well known for their free-flowing attacking football, ‘Selecao’ as they are known are desperate to avenge for that humiliating 7-1 defeat they suffered to Germany on home soil four years ago and the talents of Neymar, Coutinho and Gabriel Jesus will go a long way in helping the team achieve this. France are perhaps the team who have the best strength in depth of any team who will be in Russia this summer and will be hoping to put 2016’s European Championships disappointment when they lost in the final behind them by going one better in 2018. Spain may no longer be the team that took the world by storm with their tiki-taka tactics and winning three consecutive major tournaments between 2008 and 2012, but they still have star players such as Alvaro Morata, Andres Iniesta and Diego Costa who can make an impact on the world stage. Weak at the back but formidable in attack, Argentina will be hoping they can put an end to more than 30 years without a World Cup win. It may be talismanic forward Lionel Messi’s last shot at World Cup glory so expect him and the team to be up there come July. As well as the favourites, this year is also special for several other teams. Egypt successfully qualified for the first time in 28 years, Morocco have also made the cut for the first time in 20 years and smaller nations Iceland and Panama are set to make their tournament debut. There have also been some high-profile omissions with the Netherlands, USA and inexplicably Italy, all failing to qualify.

SPORTING WORLD
Players One of the greatest things about the World Cup is the fact it showcases the very talent of the world’s best players to fans across the world. Able to express themselves on the biggest stage of all, the World Cup provides players the chance to make history in the world’s biggest football competition. Stars are born at every tournament (think Pele, Maradona and the Brazilian Ronaldo.) Cristiano Ronaldo will be hoping that he can help Portugal to their first ever World Cup victory in 2018 recreating the wonderful form he has shown for Real Madrid. The Golden Boot is awarded to the tournament’s top scorer and Ronaldo’s rival for club and country, Lionel Messi will be hoping he can go one better than his old adversary this summer. Other contenders for the Golden Boot include England’s record breaker Harry Kane, the world’s most expensive player Neymar, Belgian powerhouse Romelu Lukaku, Germany striker Timo Werner and France’s Antoine Griezmann. The World Cup is where many players make their mark on the world’s stage and, so you can be sure that several new stars will also emerge from the tournament this summer.
England’s hopes… Every time a new World Cup is on the horizon people’s attentions inevitably turn to how the current crop of England players will fare. From comparisons to the historic team that won the tournament in 1966, to former pros and pundits explaining why ‘this year could be our year’ before England inevitably crash out in spectacular style, it simply wouldn’t be a World Cup without our iconic optimism. This year is no different with fans everywhere speculating on how England are likely to do. Drawn in a group with Belgium, Tunisia and Panama, on paper England should have no problems making it to the knockout stages, however nothing is ever straight forward when it comes to England! The team’s first game takes place on 18 June, but Gareth Southgate still has plenty to think about until then. There is sure to be plenty of debate about which 23 players will be making the trip to Russia with several positions still having question marks over. For England to have any chance of success at the World Cup striker Harry Kane has to be fit and firing and coming off the back of a fantastic goal scoring season with Tottenham, he certainly looks sharp.
40 | INSPIRATIONAL.UK.COM
The biggest position up for debate was that of goalkeeper. Joe Hart has been England’s undisputed number one since 2010 but his form at West Ham this year has been questionable, and Stoke’s Jack Butland, Everton’s Jordan Pickford and Burnley’s Nick Pope have all been selected ahead of him. Central midfield is also an area of weakness for the Three Lions. Jack Wilshere’s injury concerns have seen him miss out with Eric Dier, Jordan Henderson, Dele Alli, Fabian Delph, and RubenLoftus Cheek getting the nod. A surprise choice is Liverpool’s teenage fullback, Trent Alexander Arnold, who has been rewarded for his excellent season with the Reds with a place on the plane. One man who knows exactly what it takes to play at the World Cup is former England captain Terry Butcher. The image of Terry covered in blood during a qualifying match against Sweden has become iconic, and he gave his lowdown on the upcoming tournament and what he expects to see from England this summer. “I’m looking for the English players to stand out more than anything else. The World Cup is a spectacle and it brings out the best in players as it is the highest level of football you can play at. I’m looking for the England players to go out there, give their all and do really well, we didn’t do that in 2014 going out in the group stages. I think with Gareth at the helm if they get some momentum who knows where that could take them but I don’t think the English fans are getting carried away. I’d like to see Harry Kane set a good standard at the World Cup, he’s been brilliant for Tottenham this season and I’d like to see him go as captain and prove he can handle it at the highest level. I think he has the capability to do it.” Discussing England’s group, he said: “England’s group is a good one, playing Belgium will be a good game and a team we all know about. They won’t bring anything new to the table and a lot of their team play in the Premier League, so the English players will be well aware of the threats they pose. Overall, I think it’s a good group for England and a chance to get into the knockout stage where we have fallen short before. I think it’s positive that England are starting later on in the campaign, so we can see the other teams and find out what they are all about.” Terry concluded: “I still fancy Germany but it is still pretty open with Brazil, Spain Argentina and France all in with a shout. It’s something we can all look forward to and I think it will be an exciting competition.”

SPORTING WORLD
Europe’s most successful Ryder Cup captain, Tony Jacklin CBE, gives the lowdown on this year’s event Golf’s most illustrious tournament, The Ryder Cup, returns this year as the best players from America and Europe descend on Paris for a wonderful weekend of golfing action.
Le Golf National, 28th-30th September 2018 This year marks the 42nd edition of the event where Europe will be hoping to reclaim the trophy which they lost to the USA two years ago in a 17–11 defeat. For the first time ever, the competition is set to take place in France on the Albatros Course at Le Golf National in south-west Paris. One man who knows everything there is to know about The Ryder Cup, is Europe’s most successful ever captain, Tony Jacklin CBE. The British hero is a two-time Major winner who helped mastermind Europe’s first ever victory over the Americans in 1985, captaining the team on four occasions. This year, Danish golfer, Thomas Bjorn, will be hoping to follow in Tony’s footsteps as he captains the team for the first time in his career. One of the key decisions the captain of the hosts has to make is how to set out the course, including making choices on where to set up the pins. Inspirational Birmingham spoke to Tony and he explained how this could become a crucial factor in deciding the outcome of the entire tournament. He said: “How it plays out will depend on how Thomas Bjorn wants the course to be set up. At Hazeltine in 2016, America captain, Davis Love, had very little rough which favoured the long hitters in the USA team. So, he put the flags pretty central which caused a stir with some European players wanting the pins to be a bit tougher, but that was how Davis wanted it. Maybe Thomas will grow the rough up and narrow the fairways so there is that aspect to think about.”
Every year one of the biggest debates surrounding the competition is who the captain’s picks will be. Both captains will be able to select four players to complete their team. Europe’s other eight picks will be based upon the top four from the European Tour’s money list, and the four who are leading in the Official World Golf Rankings. These decisions can play a significant role in the outcome of the entire tournament and Tony emphasised just how important these could be. He said:
“As a captain you need to know that you have the absolute best 12 players available to you. Bjorn has some big decisions to make, clearly Ian Poulter is still one to consider with his Ryder Cup
record and the way he plays. He’s a good match player so Bjorn will have him in his sights I would think. Graeme McDowell is another one who will be doing his all to be considered. I still think it was a shame that Paul Casey wasn’t in the last competition having already played in three Ryder Cups and to not have him just because he wasn’t a member of the Tour I thought was a poor choice.” He continued: “America has some very strong young players, but so do we with the likes of Rahm and Fitzpatrick and they are an inspiring bunch. Sergio Garcia is another one who always seems to step up to the plate in The Ryder Cup as does Rory McIlroy. Tommy Fleetwood is another one who is the real deal, he’s come through this last year to prove he’s not a fluke. I hope he is able to maintain his form and there’s a lot of good players in Europe now. I think from Thomas’ point of view he’ll want the 12 who are at the top of their game as the event gets closer. There is no substitute for this as you can’t play your top men for the first two days all the time. They need some rest bite, so you need quality to fall back on.” Europe will be hoping to add an 11th Ryder Cup victory to their collection this year, which would make it four wins in five tournaments for the team, Tony discussed what the team will have to do in order to clinch victory. He said: “If we can get off to a fast start, which we can do if Bjorn gets the powerful players out there early, then we have a really good chance. It will certainly be close and we’re going to have some shocks I’m sure. In my experience you just have to wait for it all to unfold as anything can happen. Weather can play a part and all manner of things can contribute. The course setup as I mentioned earlier is important. Whatever happens I can’t wait for it all to get started in what is sure to be an exciting week!”
This year The Ryder Cup takes place between the 28–30 September and you can book Tony Jacklin CBE for a range of opportunities.
Tony Jacklin is available for media work, brand endorsements, ambassadorial work, public appearances and speaking opportunities. For more information, get in touch with Benoit Lawrence. Simply call, 07792 530 020 or email blawrence@championsukplc.com 46 | INSPIRATIONAL.UK.COM

BRITISH PAR 3 CHAMPIONSHIP
ANNUAL BP3 1933-2018
TEE-UP FOR 2018 This summer will see the eagerly anticipated return of the Farmfoods British Par 3 Championship. One of the region’s most popular golf tournaments, the championship will take place between 7 –10 August and is unique in that it brings together people from all golfing backgrounds, including professionals, amateurs and celebrities. Taking place at Nailcote Hall, Warwickshire, over the years the event has welcomed some of the biggest names in the world of sport and entertainment onto its Cromwell Course greens. Originally founded in 1933, the event was first brought to Nailcote over two decades ago, where the venue’s owner Rick Cressman helped transform it from a little-known Par 3 event, into the ever-growing event it has gone on to become. He did this with the help of leading brand agency and golf event organisers, Champions (UK) plc. The company came on board to organise, manage and deliver the event in 2006 with each event bigger and better than before. 52 | INSPIRATIONAL.UK.COM
One of the biggest draws of the Championship is the fact that for over a decade, it has been hosted by Europe’s most successful Ryder Cup captain, Tony Jacklin CBE. The former US Open champion will be back for the 2018 Championship where for the 11th consecutive year, he will be on hosting duties, rubbing shoulders with both the pros and celebrity players. Over the years the event has had some extremely memorable moments. Including in 1998 when the championship arrived at Nailcote for the first time. Renowned for being shorter than the average course, and with extremely small greens, the first tournament of the revamped edition saw the legendary British major winner, Charlie Ward, take the honorary tee shot to get the competition underway. This moment was particularly significant, as Charlie also took part in the first ever British Par 3 Championship in 1933, and so was a moment which saw his career go full circle. SPORTING WORLD
Last year saw yet another stellar line-up of professionals and celebrities attend the event in what proved to be a thrilling week of action. The week commenced with a Celeb-Am which saw a whole host of stars take part. Great play was demonstrated by all the celebrities throughout the Celeb-Am, but it was former Scottish international rugby player, Max Evans, who stole the show and walked away with the title. Harry Potter actors, James and Oliver Phelps, ex-England cricketer James Taylor and former Manchester United striker Andrew Cole also took part. The following two days of the event saw the competition hot up as the 2017 Pro-Am got underway with the likes of Masters winner Ian Woosnam OBE, World Golf Hall of Fame member Dame Laura Davies, Ryder Cup star Jamie Donaldson, former Open champion Paul Lawrie and Italian golfing hero, Costantino Rocca, all gracing the greens. In front of a packed-out grandstand, 2010 winner Richard O’Hanlon secured his second Farmfoods British Par 3 Championship title and the €50,000 prize. The Super Senior category was won by Woosnam, taking the prize from former European Tour winner Carl Mason who had won the honour in the last five consecutive years. The 2017 Norma C Herd Silver Salver went to, Michael Lawrie, who followed in his brother Craig’s footsteps who won in 2013. 2017’s edition of the event came to an end with another Celeb-Am taking place, with stars including Robbie Fowler, Nigel Mansell CBE, Sinitta, Gail Emms MBE, Ryan Sidebottom and William Roache MBE all in action. It was Liverpool legend Fowler who won the event, score of +3 enough to claim victory over former Manchester United player Clayton Blackmore. This Celeb-Am also incorporated a team aspect to the event with Müller coming out on top with a score of -6 ahead of Kerry Foods who scored -4. Peter Baker was the top scoring professional on +2 as the curtain came down on what was a fantastic week.

The 87-year-old then went on to play 36 holes across two days to get the event off to an excellent start. Peter Baker was the event’s winner and since 1998, 14 other winners have taken home the title.

One aspect of the championship that has made it so fiercely contested is that it has acted as the launchpad for many golfing stars careers. This includes two European Tour winning players, Tommy Fleetwood, and Eddie Pepperell, who both won the Farmfoods British Par 3 Championship prior to going on to have success on the European Tour. Fleetwood won the event in 2013, and in the same month he won the Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles, clinching his first European Tour victory. Since then he has gone on to win three more Tour events in 2014. Pepperell won the championship the following year which was followed by some impressive finishes and earlier this year he also won his first Tour event, triumphing in the Commercial Bank Qatar Masters.
are now available for this year’s event, visit for more information.
Amateur players are also recognised at the championship. Since 2011 the competition’s leading amateur has been rewarded with the Norma C Herd Silver Salver. The prize was introduced by Eric Herd, the owner of Farmfoods, in honour of his mother. The first Silver Salver was won by amateur turned professional golfer, Aaron Rai, who has since gone on to achieve three victories on the Challenge Tour and gain his European tour card. Other notable winners include Ladies European Tour Order of Merit winner, Charley Hull, former Strictly Come Dancing professional, James Jordan, and Craig Lawrie, the son of the 1999 Open winner Paul Lawrie OBE. 54 | INSPIRATIONAL.UK.COM
As well as the fantastic golfing action, one of the highlights of the Farmfoods British Par 3 Championship is the dinners and charity auctions that take place throughout the week. These events bring together all the players from across the week allowing them to unwind from the day and enjoy themselves, as well as raise much needed funds for Rainbows Hospice for Children and Young People who care for youngsters suffering from life-limiting and life-threatening conditions. This year, the event is back and looks set to be bigger than ever, as the professional and celebrity players prepare to make a return to the Cromwell Course. Once again, Tony Jacklin will oversee proceedings as the event host and celebrities including, Robbie Fowler, Mike Tindall, Keith Duffy, Brian McFadden, James Taylor, John Hartson, Len Goodman and Derek Redmond are all expected to return.
Preparation for this year’s event is already well underway with the Championship set to take place between 7-10 August 2018. To play or sponsor the event please call Roxanna Hayes at Champions (UK) plc on 08453 31 30 31 or email rhayes@championsukplc.com

SPORTING WORLD
FROM KART TO CAR: THE LEGEND OF LEWIS HAMILTON Lewis Hamilton MBE is the most successful British Formula One driver of all-time and one of the most recognisable sportstars on the planet. Since making his debut in the sport 11 years ago at the age of 22, Hamilton has ripped up the record books during his spells at McLaren and Mercedes, becoming a four-time Formula One World Champion and winning a total of 62 races – more than any other British driver. To celebrate the tenth anniversary of his first World Championship title, here are a few of his F1 career highlights… 2007 - Hamilton makes waves in Oz The announcement that Hamilton was to race for McLaren in 2007 came as a shock, with many commentators questioning the team’s decision to sign up a rookie. Any fears about Hamilton’s abilities were soon kicked to the curb, as he showcased his fearless driving skills alongside his world champion teammate Fernando Alonso, finishing third, and making the podium, something that would become a familiar sight, very quickly… 2007 – A first win and the record breaking rookie season continues The positive start continued for Hamilton, as he went on a streak of red-hot form, finishing on the podium in his first nine races. Coming in amongst this form was the first pole position and victory of his burgeoning career in Canada, as he steered McLaren to victory. Just one week later in Indianapolis, USA, for his second win, putting him in the driving seat for a rookie championship win. 2008 – Second season Silverstone masterclass After the near miss of the season before – Hamilton suffered from a run of bad luck narrowly missing out on the title – there was no doubt that the Brit had a point to prove, as he entered his second year in the sport. After a strong win in the Australian opener, Hamilton had slumped and arrived at his home GP sitting in 4th place in the World Championship, 10 points behind leader Felipe Massa of Ferrari. However, he blasted away the competition at Silverstone in sodden conditions, providing further evidence of his wet weather driving ability and taking the top step of the podium by a margin of 68 seconds. 2008 - Youngest F1 World Champion Hamilton’s British Grand Prix result acted as a catalyst for the rest of his season. His result at Silverstone propelled him to joint first in the World Championship race. By the time the seasonender in Brazil came around, Hamilton had a narrow lead over Massa and the tension was high ahead of the start of the race. In wet-dry conditions, Massa, and his native Brazilian crowd, thought he’d done enough to become World Champion, before Hamilton passed Timo Glock to move up to fifth place to secure the points he needed to become the sport’s youngest-ever champion in its then 58 year history, in the most dramatic of circumstances.
2013 – Moved from McLaren to team Mercedes Following his title win, Hamilton found frustration with season after season of lacklustre, unreliable cars and in 2013, the British driver decided enough was enough and moved away from his home of McLaren to Mercedes. The move was made with one eye on the future, with rumours of the German brand investing in their 2014 car ahead of a range of rule changes coming to the sport. With only a single victory in 2013, there was more success for both Hamilton and Mercedes on the not too distant horizon… 2014 – First career ‘Grand Slam’ The rumoured Mercedes advancements were proven to be true come the start of the 2014 season, as Hamilton and teammate Nico Rosberg dominated the field in the season-opener at Melbourne, winning by a comfortable margin. Come the Malaysian GP, the first 1-2 for the team since 1955 was secured as Hamilton went onto record his first career ‘Grand Slam’ – a pole position, race win and fastest lap. 2014 – Hamilton vs Rosberg in the battle for a second world title The Malaysia ‘Grand Slam’, was the start of a season of domination for the Mercedes team, as Hamilton and Rosberg fought it out for the World Championship. The two often came to blows throughout the 2013 season, as the former karting teammates created a rivalry that would captivate the global TV audience. A topsy turvy season saw Hamilton eventually take the title, a run of five consecutive wins helping his cause, in the last race in Abu Dhabi, a moment he described as “the greatest day of my life.” 2015 – Two teammates battle for top spot, and a third championship A new year saw yet more Mercedes domination at the front of the pack, and further incidents involving Rosberg and Hamilton, with clashes leading to rumours of a frosty relationship between the two. On the track, Hamilton’s superiority saw him lead the Championship from an early stage, which, when combined with a series of unfortunate mechanical failures for Rosberg, saw the Brit wrap up his third Championship at the American Grand Prix, three races before the season’s climax! 2017 – Hamilton makes history by securing the most pole positions ever Hamilton’s ability to pull out a fastest lap from nowhere is among his most heralded qualities – which when paired with one of the most dominant cars in recent memory was going to be a dangerous combination. Hamilton dislodged the great Michael Schumacher from top of the pole position records at the Italian Grand Prix, and has gone on to record 72 poles*, in a record he’s sure to hold for time to come.
2017 – A fourth world title confirms the Brit’s status as the most successful UK driver in history Following yet another bruising season competing against Rosberg, 2017 was slightly more straightforward for Hamilton. The German managed to defeat his rival for a maiden world title, before a shock retirement from the sport. A revitalised Ferrari team often threatened to trouble Hamilton, with Sebastian Vettel at the forefront of that challenge, but in reality once Hamilton overturned Vettel’s lead, 16 points at the Hungarian Grand Prix, there was only one winner. The Brit was in imperious form, while Vettel’s Ferrari let him down at the time he needed reliability the most. A fourth title beckoned for Hamilton, as he secured the championship in Mexico, celebrating by running the length of the track! With vested interests in music and film, rumours persist about Hamilton’s future involvement in the sport. At the age of just 33, Hamilton will have plenty more years left in F1 if he wishes, although many of his contemporaries will be hoping he retires sooner rather than later! While the story for Hamilton isn’t over just yet, it’s clear the British driver will be among the best of the best F1 drivers of all time. *At the time of writing

The Authors XI Vs. The Lord’s Taverners XI The Getty Wormsley Estate, Buckinghamshire 12pm Sunday 9th September 2018 EVENT ORGANISER
OFFICIAL CHARITY
The Authors XI Vs. The Lord’s Taverners XI The Quintessential English Cricket Match Picture the scene. A bright, late summer Sunday afternoon. One of the world’s oldest wandering teams. The most picturesque cricket ground in the land. And, a golden opportunity for you to cross the rope. Join two teams of authors, celebrities and former pros, captained respectively by the award-winning writer, Sebastian Faulks CBE, and 2005 Ashes winner, Matthew Hoggard MBE.* A day of lavish entertainment, fine dining, fundraising, and wonderful cricket. Sponsorship and table bookings available. The Authors Cricket Club – 1891 – 1912 & 2012 - Present You’d be forgiven for dismissing The Authors Cricket Club as the stuff of Victorian myth. Yet, not only is it an illustrative thread in cricket’s rich cultural tapestry, it’s alive and kicking in the 21st century.
In 2018, the stand-out match on the fixture list comes on 9th September, when some of today’s leading authors face Lord’s Taverners XI in a fundraiser to be held at The Cricket Ground on the Wormsley Estate in Stokenchurch. Lovingly created by John Paul Getty II, an Italian-American philanthropist, who fell in love with the game after he was introduced to it by Mick Jagger, the Buckinghamshire ground is a sight to behold. Wormsley Estate Cricket Ground With its manicured square and outfield exact replicas of The Oval and a timeless Tudor revival pavilion, this beautiful venue is the very model of an English cricket ground. The perfect summer setting. The Day Itself
Over the course of 21 years, after its first ever game in 1891, The Authors XI featured such literary giants as Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, P.G. Wodehouse and J.M. Barrie.
We get the ball rolling with a drinks reception on the lawn at midday sharp followed by a sumptuous lunch. That gives us ample opportunity to raise valuable funds for The Lord’s Taverners and Chance to Shine, two admirable cricketing charities.
And, those celebrated writers, among a host of others, spent their summers wandering the length and breadth of the country, taking on teams of all descriptions. Village greens were abuzz.
The focus then shifts back to the pitch for a 2.45pm toss. It’s a 30 over game, with the first exchanges beginning at 3pm, so sit back, relax, and enjoy the fun.
Cricketing Renaissance But, despite the team disbanding as we approached The Great War, it was reformed a full century later in 2012 and continues to play a full programme of games each season.

C it y B r e a k s SCARLETT LONDON’S
BERLIN
With more and more Brits choosing short city breaks rather than long getaways, European cities are overwhelming favourites for those wanting to get some sun while cutting out the lengthy plane journey. But what options do holidaymakers have when it comes to a city break? Let Scarlett London take you through a few of her top picks for this summer:
@Scarlett_London
With the second biggest population on the continent, Berlin is a city that is full of history and culture, with artists like David Bowie having lived in and been inspired by the capital. The 20th century alone saw a revolution staged, the Nazi party set up their HQ, before the city was bombed and eventually divided into two for decades. As a result, there’s tonnes to see, whether it be walking along remnants of the Berlin Wall, checking out Checkpoint Charlie, or visiting the rooms where key events in WWII were planned. Despite the city’s size, its main attractions are pretty easy to visit either on foot, bike or by using the public transport system. If you’re a party animal, you’ll love Berlin too, as it puts New York to shame, as a 24/7 city. Locals, too, have a laidback, friendly style, and the capital’s many nationalities have resulted in a melting pot of cultures from around the globe, creating an international village of experiences to be had, be it culinary or entertainment-based.
@scarlettlondon @ScarlettLondonBlog
COPENHAGEN Copenhagen has become one of the fastest growing metropolitan destinations in Europe, with cruise passengers and tourists flocking to Denmark to see what its capital has to offer. What they find is a city full of colourful fashion and design, and one of the world’s most dedicated bicycle cultures – Copenhagen actually has more bikes than people!
KRAKÓW Poland is a country with tonnes of history, much of which Kraków has been at the centre of as the nation’s second largest city, and one of its oldest. Regarded as one of the most beautiful cities on the continent, the summer gives an average high of 24 o in July, while visiting in December can see highs of just 2 o! A city of extremes, then, but Kraków’s attractions include the Wawel Royal Castle, striking 14th century, St. Mary’s Basilica, and the massive 1O-acre, Main Market Square.
Major landmarks for the city include The Little Mermaid statue on the Langelinie promenade, an iconic statue based on the fairytale of the same name, by Danish author Hans Christian Andersen, the Tivoli Gardens and the Amalienbord and Christiansborg palaces. If you enjoy quaint scenery with beautiful buildings, and a relaxed atmosphere, Copenhagen may be the break for you.
Outside the city centre is the Wieliczka Salt Mine, an incredible feat of human engineering that needs to be seen to be believed. An unmissable, poignant experience is the Oskar Schindler factory, immortalised in Steven Spielberg’s Oscar award-winning film, Schindler’s List. Touring the museum and finding out more about the story is a must for any visitor to Kraków.
PRAGUE
LISBON
The capital of the Czech Republic has long been a destination for couples and groups to enjoy a weekend away. Prague is a wonderful, vibrant city to escape to, with plenty to do. The Louvre might have the classics, but Prague’s art galleries feature fantastic bohemian art to admire, complementing the city’s architecture perfectly. Between intimidating Gothic towers and decadent delights of small, intimate cafes and bars, there’s something here for everyone.
Despite being situated on the Atlantic coast, continental Europe’s westernmost capital enjoys a Mediterranean climate, with average temperatures of 15o between December and February, and 25o from June to September. Lisbon has a lot of attractions for a city break destination, be it the glorious river, the vibrant buildings, or glistening sunshine.
In bars you’ll find one of the city’s main attractions – beer! Known for being incredibly tasty and great value for money, more and more bars and microbreweries have popped up in the city over the last few years, giving connoisseurs fresh blends to try. Aside from that, if you feel a little bit overwhelmed by the throngs of tourists in the city, venture down one of Prague’s maze of cobbled streets. With hidden delights around every corner, each one will bring you an authentic Prague experience.
If you’re a seafood lover, ensure you consume copious amounts of fresh, grilled sardines, from one of the many seafood bars, as it is the local delicacy. If a spot of extreme sport is your thing, then you’ll want to take part in a surf tour to one of the local beaches, Estoril and Cascais which are a short train journey away, or if you just want a bargain, the antique shops and flea markets offer all kinds of trinkets and clothing. When it comes to accommodation, there are a number of fantastic options, with elegant suites at fine hotels such as the Principe Real, suited for all budgets.

CHATEAU IMPNEY HILL CLIMB
7–8 July 2018
FUN FOR ALL THE FAMILY, BUY TICKETS NOW AT:
www.chateauimpneyhillclimb.com FOR MORE INFORMATION CALL: 0845 017 0637
The Chateau Impney Hill Climb will return to Droitwich once again for 2018. Champions (UK) Plc have been a proud partner of the event since 2017 and are delighted to be returning for the 2018 event. The Chateau Impney is a magnificent and imposing Grade II* listed manor house, completed in its current style in 1875. The work was commissioned by local ‘Salt King’ John Corbett, who wanted his Parisian educated wife to feel more at home. John’s brief to his architect was to recreate the elaborate Palace of Versailles, totally synonymous with extravagance and wealth. Several generations later, the hotel became the property of Greyfort Hotels, and was sympathetically restored to reflect the original French Baroque style. Chateau Impney is still considered to be one of the finest examples of nineteenth century French architecture outside of France itself. In 1957, it was realised that the grounds of the chateau provided the perfect setting for motorsport to take place. The Hagley and District Light Car Club began a series of sprints here that proved to be a huge success. The sprints quickly established themselves as the ‘must-attend’ event in the motorsport calendar. When the Greyfort Group took over the hotel in 2012, they did so with the intention of reigniting the passion for motorsport in Droitwich. The inaugural Chateau Impney Hill Climb took place in 2015 and has gone from strength to strength since. The 2018 event promises to be bigger and better than ever, with over 200
pre-1967 competition vehicles competing to earn the title of the fastest time of the day- an accolade that has changed hands every year since the first competition in 2015. Alongside this, the Chateau Impney will also be hosting the second round of the 3-stage Ralli 22 series for Group A, B, and pre-2004 WRC cars, wowing the crowds with demonstration runs from an exotic display of cars and bikes from every era conceivable, and the Super Car Drivers will have 25 of the best supercars tackling the course. Another 75 supercars will be taking part in the Michelin SuperCar Expo, and all visitors will have full access to the competition paddock to chat to the drivers of the competing cars. Public participation is required to vote for your favourite in the Footman James Concours d’Elegance, which this year is celebrating another aspect of history, with a Best of British theme. The Morgan Motor Company will be celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Morgan Plus 8, which will be in attendance, alongside the MMC11. There will also be a flypast from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flights, a free Vintage Funfair, and the Hill Climb will be welcoming a host of rare cars such as the V16 BRM, the Beast of Turin and the three Austin Twin Cams. If all this doesn’t convince you that this event is THE event to be seen at this summer, there will also be a world record attempt taking place by renown stunt man Alistair Moffatt. He will be attempting to break the record for the fastest time to do 5 figures of eight around two parked cars. With the imposing chateau standing proud against the rolling English parkland, Champions hopes to see you there to cheer him on!

An oasis in the heart of Warwickshire… Providing an opportunity to stop, unwind and be pampered, Elan Spa at Mallory Court is the perfect getaway. Part of the exclusive Eden Hotel Collection, which includes nine stunning properties, the spa has been purpose-built within the pictureperfect grounds of Mallory Court Hotel. Providing a perfect base to explore this beautiful part of the country, places of interest, such as the historic Warwick Castle, are close by. Designed to blend sympathetically with its surroundings, the spa includes vitality and hydrotherapy pools, a thermal retreat, fitness suite and offers a wide range of luxurious treatments for both men and women. Road testing the spa, for Inspirational Birmingham’s readers, is editor of the magazine, Sophia Hayes… “The first thing to notice about the spa,” said Sophia, “is its beautiful surroundings. Landscaped gardens and established trees set the scene for a relaxed, peaceful and quintessentially English experience.” On her visit to the spa, Sophia was treated to a full body massage which saw the expert therapist work out knots and soothe away stresses to leave her feeling relaxed and pampered, with beautifully soft skin. As you would expect from a leading spa venue, Elan Spa uses only the finest products from top brands. “The products used can really make or break a spa treatment” commented Sophia, “thankfully at Elan Spa the products used are beautiful on the skin, indulgent and deliver results.” Brands used by the spa’s team of therapists include IIa, an organic, luxury skincare brand, renowned spa-brand, ESPA and ORLY nail and hand care products.
An extensive range of treatments are available, and for those with particular needs, the spa offers targeted treatments, such as age restore facials, facials for sensitive skin and treatments for the delicate eye area. Body treatments including massages and scrubs are also on offer as are body wraps. Alongside skincare, the spa offers a series of wellbeing treatments, each designed to rebalance and restore. Experiences include the Bio Rhythms treatment which is for those experiencing jet lag or feeling out of sync and the Adreno Restore treatment which has been designed for those suffering with burn out, exhaustion and hormonal imbalance. With the relaxation taken care of, visitors can also indulge in beauty treatments including waxing, manicure and make-up – seeing them look and feel great. As Sophia points out, when it comes to dining, the spa offers something different… “The Elan Spa has thought of every detail when it comes to caring for its clients and the food on offer is no exception!” She continued: “Its range of healthy-choice, Asian-inspired, dishes make a refreshing change from the usual food on offer at spa venues.” “With so much effort spent on the outside, it is only right that what you put into your body is beneficial too. With this in mind, the spa offers freshly prepared and cooked oriental dishes such as mixed dumplings with sweet chilli dipping sauce, grilled prawn, egg noodles, ginger and corriander broth and panko crusted chicken, steamed rice and mild curry sauce.” A perfect getaway for individuals, the spa is also an ideal place for get togethers. With treatments for men and women on offer it makes a great romantic getaway for a special anniversary or the perfect place to come together as a hen party or, with its choice of mum-to-be treatments, a baby shower. A range of complete spa packages are available including full and half day options as well as full weekend getaways.

Sandon Hall a venue for all seasons… The gatehouse-flanked driveway that greets visitors to Sandon Hall offers a taste of the grandeur that is to come. Meander along the 2-mile private drive, through parkland dotted with ancient trees, grazing sheep and follies, to finally glimpse the imposing house and you are transported to another era. It is just one of the things that impresses guests attending events at the hall; from weddings and private parties to corporate functions and charity balls. If you’re wondering how such a gem has remained secret for so long, it is due to its status as a private family home – still in the hands of the Earls of Harrowby who have owned the estate for over 200 years. Only open to the public on a handful of dates throughout the year, it is available for exclusive hire, ensuring complete privacy and allowing couples marrying at the hall to feel like Lord and Lady of the Manor for their big day. So peaceful is the setting, enveloped by rolling Staffordshire countryside, that it’s hard to believe you are less than 10 miles from Junction 13 of the M6 – making it easy to find for guests arriving from far and wide. No matter the season, Sandon Hall provides a stunning venue for weddings and events – its elegant country house interiors and 50 acres of glorious garden providing a dramatic backdrop for wedding photographs. The hall is licenced for indoor civil ceremonies in either the library or Victorian conservatory, while the Temple Garden with its sweeping views is licenced as an outdoor ceremony space. For couples who want a traditional church service, the estate’s Grade II listed church is just is short car – or carriage – ride along the private drive. With all this, plus dedicated bride and groom’s dressing rooms, catering from two award-winning partners – Vanilla in Alleseasons and Catherine Skates Fine Catering – a five-star bar service from The Estate Boys and a dedicated events management team who will help bring your vision to reality, its easy to see why Sandon Hall is such a sought-after venue. And the hall is fast gaining a reputation as a venue for events other than weddings – including corporate events, charity dinners, cocktail parties, wine tastings, music recitals, and as a film and photo shoot location.

State-of-the-art digital and media centre, under construction in 2018.
CHAMPIONS (UK) plc
- A BREAK FROM THE NORM Wherever you want to take your brand, the East Midlands’ leading full-service brand agency, Champions (UK) plc, does things differently. They find a better way to deliver the results you seek. As an 80-strong, family-run agency, they know it’s all about relationships and they understand the importance of your long-term objectives. And they know that success has to be on your terms. However, you weigh that up, whatever your chosen metric, that’s where their focus lies.
End User Focus
They get to know you, your brand and your precise aims to create and roll out bespoke strategies that take you where you want to go.
With a unique structure of 10 in-house departments, they have the architecture and the knowledge to create and execute complex and consistent cross-channel campaigns that target the right audiences.
To do that they’ve developed a unique architecture. They don’t limit themselves, or what they deliver on your behalf, to a niche.
Rather than focusing on individual business sectors, they have always thought first about the end user.
Instead, they give you access to ten fields of expertise, all working together in perfect harmony – The Perfect 10.
They have developed their expertise along those lines, tailoring both the messaging and the platforms they use to reach out in the most effective way.
Rather than engage several agencies, each with a different interpretation of your brief and each with its own margin, you get joined-up thinking and just one chest to poke.
So, they treat each campaign on its own merits and use the most suitable range of promotional tools.
With a full spectrum of expertise at Champions’ disposal, you benefit from the services you need – simple as that.
Champions (UK) plc owns that journey. They turn an initial awareness of who you are and what you do into a positive decision to purchase your products or services.
Instead, they recently celebrated the granting of planning permission on a project that will transform an on-site barn into a state-of-the-art digital and media centre.
To stimulate that decision, they take your target audience through a series of further touchpoints, each of which builds understanding, confidence and trust.
With the ground scheduled to be broken in the middle of 2018, they’re equipping themselves to help yet more client brands take full advantage of the ongoing digital revolution.
The team creates consistent and clear messages that reinforce the values you represent and the benefits you deliver.
Champions (UK) plc has already developed a broad palette of capabilities. With a team of over 90 set to push past the 100 mark, their offering will only become even more comprehensive.
They increase the frequency and broaden the range of those touchpoints, raising the probability of your customers encountering them. Growing Capabilities Since they were first established in 2003, Champions has looked to the long-term. Whether that’s building enduring client relationships or reinvesting in the agency team and infrastructure, there’s always an eye on the future. They use the same far-sighted vision that has kept dozens of clients loyal for over a decade to build on their expertise and technical capabilities - and expand the range of services they deliver.
/+Championsukplcagency 100 | INSPIRATIONAL.UK.COM
From the very first touchpoint, the moment your potential customers first encounter your brand, they embark on a journey.
Look at the digital space. It may have been just two short years since they doubled the footprint of their headquarters on the Leicestershire/Nottinghamshire border but they’re not content to stand still.
Plotting a Course
Key to delivering in this nuanced way is their ability to understand a wide range of audiences. That and their expertise in devising and delivering campaigns and strategies focused on the end user.

On top of their game British bikes built for British success British cycling is one of our nation’s success stories. Be it road racing through France or racing against the clock at the velodrome, the sport has enjoyed huge international recognition due to cycling stars and sport ambassadors such as Sir Chris Hoy, Bradley Wiggins, Victoria Pendleton and more recently Jason Kenny, Laura Trott and Philip Hindes. It has also become a favourite passtime for many ordinary Brits who have become passionately hooked on the thrill of riding – in cities, across the country and off the beaten track. For some of these riders, being at the top of their game is critical – which is why they always look for the best and most personalised bike they can find.
Here is why:
The full range of Shand Cycles includes:
Trillion Cycles
• Endurance
Prime, Trillion Cycles’s ultimate steel hardtail mountain bike, has a lightweight design made to tackle some of the UK’s hardest and most challenging, mountainous trails.
• Adventure
Why build British?
• Reynolds 853 and Columbus Zona steel frame
Enter British industrialist and entrepreneur Sanjeev Gupta. Founder and owner of the global metals and industrial business Liberty House Group and executive chairman of the GFG Alliance. He saw an opportunity not to be missed to create more value in Britain, support local manufacturing and grow communities. With expertise in the group in designing solutions for demanding sectors such as mainstream automotive and aerospace, Sanjeev recognised the potential to revive the once prominent British bicycle manufacturing industry also; in the process leveraging the strength of ‘Built in Britain’ and acknowledging his own family’s historic links to bike-making internationally.
• 160mm Travel
True to his word, within 18 months of making his first major industrial acquisition Sanjeev, through Liberty Engineering, part of Liberty House Group, bought two authentically-British bicycle manufacturing businesses - Trillion Cycles and Shand Cycles. Delivering top end hand crafted individual bikes, both businesses are increasingly making inroads at the top end of the UK cycling market.
110 | INSPIRATIONAL.UK.COM
By no means a one-size-fits-all bike brand, Trillion Cycles products come with three options – a frame only, as a build kit or a fully custom build where cylists have the unique opportunity to create a bike that is bespoke, offering a truly personal ride. Its key features are:
• Reynolds Heat-treated Steel • 14 different frame colours This month Trillion will also be unveiling its brand new Shug model - a 29 inch wheel mountain bike with 130mm of fork travel - which has the same fast and aggressive cycling DNA that is built in the Prime model. For more information about Leamington Spa-based Trillion Cycles, visit: www.trillioncycles.com Shand Cycles Liberty’s Shand Cycles, another bike-manufacturing member of the GFG Alliance, makes adventure bikes at its headquarters in Livingston, Scotland. This independent business has been creating custom-made frames and bikes for 15 years and handles all processes of bike manufacturing in-house.
• Fat Tyre • Commuter • Road Shand is also the main sponsor for Scottish Highlander Jenny Graham who is about to embark on a huge endurance challenge. Starting on the 16th June this year and riding self-supported for 18,000 miles across 14 countries on 4 continents, Jenny aims to beat the current world record in this category by 34 days. For more information about Shand Cycles, visit: www. shandcycles.com Good for the sport, great for the community Where bikes and Liberty are concerned, building in Britain has other benefits too. It is not only about the high-end design, the supreme finish and the delighted customer. It is also about supporting and growing manufacturing to benefit local communities. This is why the two bike brands, working under the umbrella of the GFG Alliance, were recently excited to sponsor and participate in the 66-mile Loch Ness Etape road race. The GFG Alliance is one of Scotland’s biggest industrial investors, having committed around £500m over the past two years to acquire and develop various metals and other industrial assets across the country, and was therefore keen to support this high profile sporting event.
During June, the GFG Alliance is partnering with the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup at Fort William in Scotland where Trillion’s mountain bikes will showcase their capabilities. Both biking brands will be present throughout the weekend with Liberty’s cycling engineers on hand to discuss key features and benefits, as well as demonstrate the new Shug model. Liberty and its parent the GFG Alliance have been an official partner of the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup for many years though – most prominently since Sanjeev Gupta acquired a number of industrial and property assets in 2016, along with the estate on which the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup runs.

TURNKEY ENGINEERING SOLUTIONS With more than 30 specialist engineering divisions operating from its Birmingham headquarters, adi Group has, since it was set up by Alan Lusty in 1990, always taken a comprehensive approach to devising and delivering robust client solutions. Inspired by an operational model that serve Formula 1 so well, adi counts many of the world’s best loved brands among its loyal clients. A ‘right first time’ and speed of decision making culture ensures they create and deliver the turnkey solutions that engineer the outcomes – and outputs – clients demand.
And that culture has helped adi Group cement its status among the world’s most sustainable and engaging employers. EcoVadis, a global organisation enabling companies to measure and demonstrate their CSR performance on a rich, multi-tiered scale, recently awarded adi their Gold Accreditation. Scoring the firm at this exceptional level, EcoVadis rates adi in the top 5% of the tens of thousands of companies it assesses in over 110 countries worldwide. The news came on the back of another significant boost for the engineering firm, after it was recognised by The Sunday Times’ Best Company workplace engagement accreditation programme, which gave adi an impressive overall score of over 660 in a wide-ranging analysis.
SELF-DELIVERING MODEL
ENGINEERING THE FUTURE
Building from the ground up as first a supplier of electrical installation services to industry, Alan steadily added automation, then welding and fabrication service strings to his bow. The firm has since kept to a constant growth trajectory, enabling it to broaden the portfolio of services it offers clients.
Despite the common misconception that UK manufacturing is in decline, the reality is that we suffer from a systemic engineering skills shortage. But, with a ground-breaking pre-apprenticeship scheme in place for 14-16 year olds and plans to double its 2018 apprentice intake to over 50 full time apprentices by 2020, adi is serious about redressing the balance.
Now, with over 30 core engineering specialisms in its locker, adi Group has a self-delivering model that enables it to serve as a one-stop-shop provider of turnkey engineering solutions to clients in the Automotive, Food & Beverage, Manufacturing, Aerospace & Defence, Pharmaceutical and Petrochemical sectors. With a client list including the likes of Cadbury, Coca-Cola, Jaguar Land Rover and BAE Systems, adi successfully coordinates team from its 11 UK bases to work some of the most challenging and technically complex projects of the present day. adi Group Strategic Account Director, James Sopwith said, “We often hear the complaint in the UK that ‘we don’t make anything anymore’ but that’s a little misleading. The UK is still a worldleader in high precision, highly skilled manufacturing. Naturally, though, projects of that nature are very complex and require advanced engineering skills. adi Group, with the broad expertise we have at our disposal, is well-equipped to deliver in a joined-up manner across the piece.”
With 2018 designated the ‘Year of Engineering’, its preapprenticeship scheme enables GCSE students to get to grips with engineering and gives them the real-world skillsets they’ll need as they move into employment. James explained the firm’s perspective. “We very much see ourselves as part of the wider community. That means we have responsibilities, not only to our team but to the people around us. Historically, as a nation we have failed to inspire sufficient people into what is a valuable and rewarding profession, so it’s incumbent upon us to redress that balance and to provide high quality opportunities in a progressive working environment.” The group has ambitious plans to more than double its £90 million turnover to £200 million in the next four years and is always looking for high calibre engineers to come on board and further build on the West Midlands’ already sterling industrial reputation. For more information on how adi Group’s self-delivering model can streamline your manufacturing processes, visit www.adiltd.co.uk or call James Sopwith on 0121 451 2255

On the fast track to success
“I am thrilled to have brought on Janine Edwards Wealth Management as our official wealth management provider. The business has grown significantly in recent years and it is impossible to ignore their dedication to furthering the success of businesses like mine. Janine herself brings a contemporary approach to what can be a dry topic – she makes wealth management fun and most importantly of all, she cuts out the jargon to create the perfect balance between accessibility and providing quality advice.”
people at the right events. She has already lined us up to attend many exciting networking events in the coming months in order to help us grow our contacts and clientele. “Janine has a remarkable number of contacts within both her immediate industry, and also within the automotive industry and so she blends with our business perfectly. By introducing us to more networking events and giving Supercar Driver an added boost, I have great confidence that we will have a long-standing relationship with Janine.”
Adam continued: “Not only is Janine working with us as a wealth management adviser, she is also an extremely well-connected individual and is perfectly placed to put us in front of the right
Believing supercars are made to be raced, not just admired, Supercar Driver is a members-only car club which encourages supercar owners to put the pedal to the metal and hit the road in their luxury vehicles. Members of the club are encouraged to enjoy their supercar by attending the many events that Supercar Driver organise each year, and also receive a quarterly magazine designed and written in-house. Supercar Driver was founded by car enthusiast, Adam Thorby, in 2009. Nine years on and the business is now the country’s leading members club for supercar owners. Currently, the business brings a wide range of driving opportunities to its 750 country-wide exclusive members, who drive the likes of Ferrari, Porsche, Lamborghini, McLaren, and Maserati. Speaking of the business and the different types of events the company runs, Adam said: “The events we organise are tailored to get the owners of these beautiful cars out and about enjoying all aspects of them. To ensure that all of our members want to get behind the wheel of their supercars, we organise a wide array of events throughout the year, from early morning drives and international tours, to charity events and track days.” Perhaps the greatest sign of how the company has grown the event side of its business, is through its annual Supercar Secret Meet event as Adam explained: “Our annual Supercar Secret Meet event is our most prominent. It marks the first meet of the season and it gets everyone excited for the year of events ahead. When we first established the secret meet some five years ago we were seeing 50 cars attend, this year that number has grown to 315 cars showcasing at the event!” Supercar Driver hasn’t just sparked the attention of supercar owners though, another testament to their growing presence in the automotive industry is the sponsorship they have gained. In 2014 the company brought in their first and biggest sponsorship deal with world-renowned tyre manufacturer, Michelin. Officially associated with such a prolific sponsor, what has followed is a string of sponsors wanting to back the club, including: Reep, JBR Capital, First Point Insurance and XL Responsive Vehicle Leasing

Adam is proud of the company’s growing turnover and highprofile sponsorship deals but actually recognises something more humble as their biggest achievement to date, as he explained: “Of course, we are extremely proud of our company growth and are thrilled to be smashing our targets, but we see our greatest achievement being our charity fundraising efforts. We are a small business of just six members of staff and yet to-date have raised some £100,000 for the children’s hospice, Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice.” With ambitions clearly fixed on growing the business – which has already increased its members by 75% in just two years – Adam recognised a need to have a wealth management service on board to help take the business to the next level in its journey. That’s where Janine Edwards Wealth Management, a Principal Partner Practice of St. James’s Place Wealth Management stepped in. Specialising in corporate financial advice and protection, aspects of exit strategy planning for business owners, investment planning, retirement planning and tax and estate planning, Janine has more than 30 years’ experience working in the wealth management industry. Supercar Driver’s work with Janine is just beginning, but Adam is excited to be working with Janine and confident where her expertise can take the business to the next level:

BUSINESS MATTERS
since the financial crisis that changed the world… 2008 was a significant year for many reasons, Barack Obama was elected U.S President, the Olympics took place in Beijing and the world felt the effects of the biggest financial crisis since the Great Depression. Signs of the crisis began in 2007 when America’s mortgage market began to collapse. The collapse was in part credited to ‘subprime’ lending, a situation which saw lenders give mortgages to people with poor credit ratings. With the chances high of these borrowers defaulting on their loans, the die was cast on what would become a global crisis. Financial irresponsibility by senior industry figures, as well as certain governmental policies, were also labelled as causes for the crisis, which by early 2008 was spreading across the USA and beyond. Banks collapse American banks began taking more and more risks to try and stem the problem, which in September 2008 resulted in one of the world’s most famous banks, Lehman Brothers, having to declare bankruptcy. Having held onto a huge number of subprime mortgages, the bank was suffering from unprecedented losses. This triggered scenes across the globe that hadn’t been seen since the 1930s. The market froze, with investors suddenly withdrawing huge amounts of money out of banks all over the world. Central banks and governments worldwide were called to bail out several high-profile organisations. However, even with governments getting involved to try and support the crisis’ biggest casualties, there were still plenty of banks who didn’t make it through. In February, 2008, the U.K. government opted to nationalise Northern Rock. Even this was not enough to save the firm, and in 2012 they were taken over by Virgin Money.
124 | INSPIRATIONAL.UK.COM
The crash goes global The effects of the crisis were felt far and wide, and Iceland’s entire banking system collapsed and the country had to request emergency funds from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) as did Hungary, Latvia, Ukraine, Belarus and Pakistan. Seemingly no corner of the globe was left unaffected. The British High-Street was hugely impacted. Retail chain, Woolworths, closed its doors after over a century in business, and they weren’t the only ones. On average building societies decreased by 28%, employment agencies by 13% and estate agents by 9% during the crisis. As well as this, Britain was faced with a significant unemployment problem with more and more businesses closing or cutting hours to try and cope with the crash. World leaders from the 20 richest nations, came together in Washington to try and put plans in place to deal with the global financial crisis, including to overhaul the global financial structure. In the decade since the financial crisis, progress has been steady but slow. Different countries managed to recover at different rates with Germany and Japan bouncing back fairly quickly. Spain and Italy, however have needed much longer. The UK finds themselves somewhere in the middle, with 2014 seeing the UK really begin to make positive strides towards recovery, boasting the fastest growing economy of all the countries in the G7. It is hard to predict where the British economy will head in the coming months and years with the statistics reading differently depending on the region. For example, in 2017 London reported an 8% increase on their economy, whereas the likes of Cardiff, Sheffield and Hull have shown a 5% decrease. With many unanswered questions on many issues, the future remains uncertain. However, one thing is for certain, world leaders will be wanting to avoid ever seeing a repeat of the 2008 financial crisis.

Friday 3 November 2017 Marking the 25th anniversary of one of the most iconic moments in Olympic history, the Derek Redmond ball at London’s glamourous Dorchester Hotel venue was a roaring success. Derek’s career-defining race came in the 400m semifinal at 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona. With an initial strong getaway, Derek looked to be cruising into the final, before disaster struck 250m from the finish when a torn hamstring saw him fall to the ground in pain. Table plan and wonderful flowers by Searcys
One of the highlights of the event was Justin Osmond taking to the stage to play a 200-year-old Baldantoni violin. The violin was certainly another talking point of the day as it is worth a whopping $100,000! As a child, Justin was diagnosed with 90% hearing loss and so his break into the world of music is truly remarkable.
The famous gherkin
Located inside the iconic London high-rise, Searcys provided a stunning backdrop to the extremely topical event. The LGBT Diversity & Inclusion event was just one of the many networking breakfasts Champions After Dinner Speakers organises throughout the year and are always thoroughly enjoyed by guests and speakers alike.
