RITA ORA’S INSPIRATIONAL START TO STARDOM Rita Sahatçiu – or Rita Ora as she is better known in Britain’s entertainment industry – is a hugely talented and equally as successful singer and actress. Now, she holds a name that everyone, everywhere has heard of, but her start in life didn’t come so smoothly.
O
Ora was born in Kosovo in 1990 – a time which saw great conflict begin to bubble under the surface. By the time she had turned one, the tensions between Albania and Serbia had reached breaking point and major violence was beginning. As events unravelled quickly around him, Ora’s father, Besnik Sahatçiu, made the life-changing decision to uproot his family of five and flee their home in Pristina in search of refuge. However, the crisis surrounding the country meant that airports, boarders and train stations were closing, subsequently trapping people in the country.
8 //
In her biography, Hot Right Now, Ora used the word “lucky” to describe her family’s escape, “we were the last flight out of Pristina” she said. It was 1,661 miles away, in London’s Notting Hill where Mr and Mrs Sahatçiu set up home and continued to raise their three children – Rita, Elena and Don – safe from what eventually spiralled into the Kosovo War of 1998-99. However, upon landing on English soil, and before setting up their new lives, Rita and her siblings were temporarily put into a children’s home while her parents’ status was reviewed.

Fashion and Entertainment
Ora may have only been an infant at the time of her family’s refuge, but she would go on to spend her subsequent years battling the challenges that refugees are so often faced with, including harsh stereotyping and lack of opportunities. In an interview with the Evening Standard, she remembers: “That word [refugee] carries a lot of prejudice […] when you put anyone into an alien environment, where other people aren’t completely comfortable with them being there, they are automatically going to be defensive. It’s the rule of the jungle, right?” Her turbulent upbringing was something that very nearly saw her go down an entirely different path to the one she is on now, with her parents fearing she would end up on a downward spiral towards the all too familiar path of drug and alcohol abuse. Fast forward to 2015 for a brief moment though and her refugee status came into focus and was shone in a positive light as she was named an Honorary Ambassador of the Republic of Kosovo. In her speech she thanked Britain for its refuge but said: “I will always have a special place in my heart for my home town and Kosovo.” Back to early Ora, and it was at the age of 17 that she began to put her negative past behind her and think more seriously about her future and pursued her passion for

singing. With her Sylvia Young Theatre School education in tow, she started out by performing at open mic nights, as many musicians have done before her. Between the years 2007-2010 it seemed like she would make the breakthrough she so clearly deserved, having signed with record label, Roc Nation, and making cameo video appearances for the likes of Jay-Z and Drake. But it wasn’t for another four years until she really made a name for herself. Turning to YouTube, the social media platform that has become a career-starter for many, Ora was uploading covers of songs which eventually caught the attention of DJ Fresh who was on the look-out for an unknown female vocalist to feature in his new song Hot Right Now. Hot Right Now is arguably the single that everyone remembers Rita Ora for. It smashed its way to the top of the UK Singles Chart peaking at number one. And, leaving everyone desperately wanting to know more about DJ Fresh’s fresh talent, it was the leg up into the industry she needed. She certainly didn’t waste any time making her next move as soon after her breakthrough she released a number of solo hits – R.I.P and How We Do both claimed her number one spots in the UK Singles Chart. Having tested how her

music was being received, it was time for her to unleash a debut album on the world. An artists’ debut album is often make or break, but Ora, as the album was titled, rocketed to the top of charts and was followed by three nominations for the 2012 MTV Europe Music Awards, a mini US tour, followed by her very first UK stadium tour which was a sell-out, plus a further three nominations for the 2013 Brit Awards including British Breakthrough Act. So, it’s safe to say it was make rather than break for this singer. Countless songs (Black Widow, For You and Girls), performances (BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend, Isle of Wight

Festival) and brand collaborations (Adidas, Rimmel, DKNY) have come since but in 2015 she was the surprise that nobody in the film industry saw coming when she confirmed her part in the three three-part movie franchise, Fifty Shades of Grey. She played Mia, the sister of protagonist Christian Grey, played by Jamie Dornan. Despite raving about her pursuit into acting, and with no doubts that we will see her again on our screens, conversation always, somewhat naturally, reverts back to music for Ora, and when recently speaking to The Guardian, she said: “People, everyday people, do jobs from nine to five that I don’t think they wished for when they were kids. I love everything I’ve done as a woman and as a businesswoman, but my whole life and passion and fulfilment in my heart has always been about my music.” Two albums, 17 awards and four films down the line and Rita is no longer known as a refugee from Kosovo, but the global sensation with a real knock-out voice. But, in a time where refugees are still making negative headlines, it’s important that we don’t forget Ora’s poignant backstory, which portrays a story of how one refugee turned it all around to prove the world wrong. And, while she is dominating the music, and film scene and is said to be worth an estimated $19 million, a minute in her company and you will still find, in her words, “just a normal person from West London.”

FALL-ISHLY IN LOVE WITH FASHION
A
Whether the arrival of autumn and winter leaves you yearning for summer, or embracing the seasonal change, there is no getting away from the fact that fashion in fall is, well, fabulous.
As nature’s colours turn, so too do the colour palettes of fashion and fresh out of their spring/summer closet, fashionistas from around the world, us included, wait eagerly to hear what the top fashion houses have to say.
From chic floor length black gowns to printed mini dresses with plunging necklines, the collection is oozing with sophistication but done in such a way that makes it extremely versatile and wearable.
Our fashion experts at Inspirational London have compiled and reviewed the autumn/winter collections from some of our favourite designers…
The brand has become synonymous for creating looks to emphasise the legs and for many of their autumn/winter looks the brand’s creative designer, Anthony Vaccarello, has honed-in on above the knee cuts with shorts and miniskirts dominating the collection.
Chanel – Tailored to perfection Chanel never fails to deliver during any season, but their autumn/winter, ready-to-wear collection has left us once again falling shamelessly at the feet of the French fashion house. Showcasing it for the first time in Paris’ Grand Palais, the collection draws inspiration from the colours of nature with burnt oranges, metallic golds, forest greens and light fawns all making regular appearances. An extensive range of materials and textures have been used to bring the collection to life - tweed, velvet, fur and mohair to name just a few and the designers have experimented with different cuts and lengths, from ankle grazing trousers to floor length coats and plenty of high neckline designs.
Yves Saint Laurent – A blooming autumn It’s black or it’s floral and there’s no in-between for Yves Saint Laurent’s ready-to-wear autumn/winter collection. And, the contrast is simply beautiful.
16 //
Leather is a recurring material for Yves Saint Laurent and has been used to bring an edge to shorts, jackets, dresses and gloves in the collection.
Tom Ford – A walk on the wild side Raising the curtain on his autumn/winter menswear collection in New York Fashion Week, the Park Avenue Armory space was the backdrop for Tom Ford’s latest pieces. The result? A collection for the fashion forward. Black, white and silver colour palettes are prominent, and the recurring use of snakeskin cannot be ignored from Ford’s creations. A chic print that makes a statement, it is incorporated onto a variety of different materials and
used on garments such as suit jackets, trousers, shoes and even ties.
use of colour, Blahnik has delivered one of our favourite footwear collections yet.
Having previously stated that actor, Roy Halston Frowick’s fashion has been the inspiration for some of his pieces in the past, there is certainly notes of that in this collection too with no shortage of roll neck tops on display.
From classic courts with a colourful toe and knee-high boots with a fur-detail cuff, to the brand’s classic eye for embellishment, the vast collection is one to cherish forever.
Manolo Blahnik – A whimsical winter Highly anticipated each season is the offering from one of the world’s most influential footwear designers, Manolo Blahnik. Famed for his whimsical designs and his unafraid
A material which is widely recognised as one of the brand’s favourites, tweed is carried across sling backs, pumps and courts. In-line with the season, the beloved Blahnik has opted for darker, more autumnal shades of the material and described his inspiration as “the Lombardian landscape during harvest time.”

THE DISCERNING DESIGNER BEHIND GOAT FASHION Her designs have been worn by some of today’s most influential women, been featured in fashion bibles around the world and her brand is widely regarded as one of the most effortlessly chic fashion houses in the industry. Jane Lewis is the founder and designer behind womenswear brand, Goat Fashion. Available in Harrods, Farfetch, Matches and Fenwick as well as online and in their Mayfair flagship store, Goat Fashion releases four seasonal ready-to-wear collections a year, specialising in investment pieces – dresses, tops, knitwear, skirts, trousers – for women who appreciate understated elegance. Jane truly epitomises what it means to be a discerning designer. In an industry full of demanding fashionistas, she has the ability to listen and know exactly what to give, and, she’s done it all without formal fashion training.
Jane Lewis, Founder
A former assistant to British fashion designer, Elspeth Gibson, Jane’s entrance into designing was handling eveningwear and it was this which inspired her to go it alone and focus on what she believed the industry was screaming out for – a working wardrobe for the multitasking women of the world. Goat Fashion’s journey into the high-end fashion industry began in 2001 with Jane designing investment cashmere pieces such as jumpers and cardigans. Then, subtly and almost overnight, but not without hard work, Goat Fashion became a sensation that all working women wanted to have hanging in their wardrobe. Clearly passionate, Jane said: “Style is innate and can be honed and cultivated. It’s individual. That’s what sets it apart from generic fashion. It’s the person that brings it to life.” “My aim has always been to create an edited capsule collection. Versatile wardrobe staples that withstand the test of time. Lasting modern classics.” Jane’s drive for business, is also reflected in her celebrity following too – busy, independent, hard-working and self-made women. And it’s the likes of the Duchess of Cambridge, the Duchess of Sussex, Helen Mirren, Gwyneth Paltrow as well as fellow fashionista Victoria Beckham OBE
22 / /
who have all complimented Jane’s talent and adorned her clothing. She’s not gone unnoticed by the fashion industry’s biggest and most prestigious publication either with the glossy pages of British Vogue having featured Jane’s elegant designs.
A little peek into Goat Fashion’s autumn/ winter collection… From long-sleeved ankle grazing dresses made from lightweight fabrics, to roll neck chunky knitwear for when the weather isn’t on your side, Goat Fashion’s autumn/ winter ready-to-wear collection is classy and chic – which is only to be expected from the designer behind it. Followers and wearers of Goat Fashion will find velvet at the heart of the autumn/winter collection with rich inky blues – which Jane describes as ‘cartridge’ – used across tunic dresses and a funnel collared coat. There is even a beautifully tailored jacket and fit and flare trouser combination which is an absolute dream for those looking for a suit with an edge.
Proving that florals aren’t just for spring, Jane has also incorporated botanical patterns into some of her dresses this season too which can easily be styled from day to night. Jane shared with Inspirational London her personal favourites from the collection: “My favourite styles from the autumn/winter 2018 include the Goldfinch dress. It has the most gorgeous silhouette. I have it in all 3 colours. The Gail cashmere sweater is
a stylish twist on a classic crew. I love the double ruffle detail. The Glamour jumpsuit is timeless and elegant, my go-to for the event season. The Gladstone coat is made from rich tweed with a 70’s vibe. I will be layering up on chilly days in this sumptuous wrap coat.” You can view some of Goat Fashion’s winter collection pieces in our Women’s Gift Guide. www.goatfashion.com

ELEGANTES LONDON – A SCENT LIKE NO OTHER The vision of Elegantes London founders Thomas and Dagmar Smit was to return perfume to its historic beginnings and traditions by creating a unique sensory experience.
H
Having established their reputation as leading hoteliers, the husband and wife team’s next venture was to transform an old monastery into Prague’s award-winning, The Augustine Hotel. Having managed the hotel for numerous years, in 2012, the Smits decided to turn their hands to establishing ‘the world’s rarest perfumery’. In their final weeks at The Augustine Hotel, the couple discovered a wonderful quote etched into a granite archway: ‘Elegant people of our time are honourable people who pass on their values to others - 1599.’ These words captured the Smits’ imagination, and together they channelled their passion, attention to detail and exacting standards into creating a perfume house that redefines timeless elegance and opulence in the contemporary world. Elegantes London was brought to life by world-renowned perfumer Julien Rasquinet. This young creative is the prodigy of legendary perfumer Pierre Bourdon, responsible for pioneering scents including Frederic Malle Iris Poudre and Davidoff Cool Water. When tasked with curating Elegantes London, Julien was given no constraints. The

remit was simply to create an incomparable collection. Julien’s expertise and technique allowed him to identify and gather the world’s most exceptional ingredients and it took him four years to create the original Heritage collection of 12 exquisite perfumes, sold in the UK in Harrods and Fortnum & Mason.
Elegantes London Black Opera flacon (200ml): £3,000 available at Harrods
In August 2018, Elegantes London extended its Heritage collection with the unveiling of the handcrafted limited edition Black Opera. This special masterpiece is presented in two scents, Cashmere Elusive and Rose Musk Elusive, both exclusive to Harrods.
Elegantes London Heritage Collection (200ml): £2,350 available at Harrods and Fortnum & Mason
Every Elegantes London Heritage scent is hand filled into magnificently handcrafted clear crystal or black crystal flacons. The shape is reminiscent of the swirling skirts of an Haute Couture ball gown and the cap is inspired by a brilliant-cut diamond with 85 facets. Each flacon is hand blown using a unique formula by 103-year-old glass and crystal artisan, Waltersperger. From November 2018, Elegantes London is continuing to expand with the launch of the Personality Collection, comprising of seven eau de parfums. This includes female scents, Cashmere, Rose Elegantes, Rose Musk and Ultimate Musk, as well as masculine scents, Amber Wood, Oud Exquisite and Oud Noblesse. Following the purchase of Elegantes London, clients will become a member of Club Elegantes to be part of the ‘Beyond First’ journey. Members receive private invitations to VIP events and new launches.

CARDS IN A DECK THERE ARE 52 CARDS IN A DECK, SO 2,598,950 POSSIBLE POKER HANDS. THE ODDS OF A ROYAL FLUSH ARE 649,740 TO 1. THAT ONE COULD BE YOU.
Even with those odds, statistics show that many of us are willing to gamble, crossing our fingers and whispering into the ear of Lady Luck. According to a recent study by Gambling.net, nearly 75% of adults in the UK gamble. A 2012 survey revealed that mobile gambling was up 75% year-on-year and it is estimated that 164 million people in the world will be using mobile devices to access online gambling by 2018. Gambling has gone mainstream. From pubs and clubs to private casinos; whether we’re jumping up-and-down in the bookies or gambling via our mobile phones, we are a nation of chancers, confident enough to bet on the role of a dice, the spin of a wheel or the turn of a card. Or a horse, a dog, a football being kicked. How about all six of your numbers being picked in the National Lottery draw? The UK Gambling Commission, who, four times a year, take a survey of more than 4,000 adults whose demographics are representative of the UK as a whole, showed that bingo and lottery draws are the most popular form of gambling - but the trends look very different based on frequency. Gambling is gaming. It is a social experience and one of the oldest known pursuits of mankind. Many of us play not in the hope of winning big and clearing our mortgage, but as a social interaction. Archeological evidence suggests that even the earliest caveman was a gambler and in Greek mythology Zeus, Hades and Poseidon are said to have split the Universe by sharing heaven, hell and the sea with the throw of the dice. Gambling has a long and convoluted history but at its most basic level it is about interaction, deciding whether or not to take an action in the hope of a desired result. A result that you have no control over. New games have emerged from the likes of Europe and China – in live playing environments and across technology - and people are still trying to predict the future of gambling. The pursuit of gambling continues to adapt. Baccarat is an interesting example. Created in the 1400s by Felix Falguiere, it is still being enjoyed over 600 years later and is particularly popular with the Chinese market. On iTunes there are at least 50 Baccarat apps (in English and Chinese) and at Les Ambassadeurs in Mayfair it is the most popular table game with its members. ‘We have a large Chinese membership,’ says Rod Ariss, Les Ambassadeurs’ casino manager. ‘And while we offer other traditional table games such as Blackjack and American Roulette, members are drawn to Baccarat. These are always the most popular tables.’
Advertorial
Baccarat is a card game with relatively little strategy involved yet it appeals to serious gamblers and high-rollers. It is known to have one of the lowest house ‘Edges’ – a universally accepted feature of international casino gaming – of any of the table games, with bets placed on the player or the banker’s hand. A reason for the game’s popularity with the Chinese in the UK is the fact that the ‘Edge’ is often less in the UK than applied in many other countries, with the house taking 1.06%. Compare that with slot machines, often a casino’s bread and butter, making up to 85% of the average casino’s revenue, according to GamblingSites.com; and Keno, a popular lottery-like game that by all accounts originated in China, can have house edges up to 25%. Baccarat is also a game shrouded in ritual and superstition, something Chinese players have a deep affinity with. Some will even call out Deng (Cantonese) or Ding (Mandarin) before opening their cards, adhering to a superstition they believe will lead them being dealt good cards. ‘A lot of Chinese players don’t like the number four, says Ariss. ‘They believe it to be unlucky. I think why Les Ambassadeurs has seen an increase in Baccarat is because Chinese players like the stats and patterns of the game. They are theory-seekers.’ Competition is of course inevitable and technology is changing the way people play games and gamble. Digital gaming promotes advanced play features and the offer of convenience, so now more people are playing solo on their mobile phones, choosing instead to lock horns with astute computer algorithms and virtual strangers. But a live environment will always give you a much better understanding of the game. You can see and study the competition (practicing your ‘poker face’), while experiencing the buzz – even nervousness – that permeates from gambling, something online games can never replicate.
i T U N E S H A S OV E R 50 B AC C A R AT A P P S The lure of the game is as strong now as it has ever been. Private clubs and casinos continue to draw in members, offering a range of games from Blackjack to American Roulette, Three Card Poker and Baccarat. We are even holidaying based around certain casino offerings. Take for example The Bellagio in Las Vegas, one of the world’s most famous casinos, where the table limits in some games can exceed $1 million but where people will also flutter much smaller notes and coins. Modern-day gaming is for modern-day consumers; all types of people are frequenting casinos, whether it’s to bet big at the tables or sit and dally at the slot machines. The ascent of gambling is due to both the access and variety available and while not all of us can afford the luxury of some of the world’s most prestigious private casinos, we can dedicate small amounts of cash to the slot machines and the fruit machines and the apps which allow us to bet and play at an amateur level. What started as a way of passing time – largely played by soldiers and as a lottery to fund state works (evidence of Keno slips in China go back to 200 BC) – is now easily accessible with increased opportunity for all.

While we can see the genesis of gambling and trace the formation of games and casinos, the emergence of technology throws the future of casino games into unspecified territory. And yet, London is dotted with stunning casinos from one of Europe’s largest in the East End to the stylish and opulent Les Ambassadeurs in Mayfair. At membership casinos such as Les Ambassadeurs, there’s a spike in foreign membership and in the popularity of games such as Baccarat. The land-based casino world embraces technology but also offers the unrivalled experience of both private and social live gambling. The conviction of people to bet, flutter and take those odds will always persist and the social interaction and excitement from live-environment gambling will always be with us. DISCOVER THE TOXINS AFFECTING YOUR HEALTH In these days of Insta-worthy dining, clean eating and protein shakes, many of us are more conscious than ever before of what we put into our bodies. And yet, despite our best nutritional efforts, we may all still be running the risk of exposure to potentially harmful chemicals every day. Health test provider, Lastinghealth, highlight a report from the World Health Organisation that there are over 150,000 unnatural chemicals found in products we use and in our everyday environment, as well as in the products we use. Over time this build-up of toxins has the potential to impede health. Such chemicals can be found in items from makeup and sunscreen to sandwich bags, drinks bottles and even the air we breathe.
30 //
Taken in through the air or ingested after they have leached into our food and drinks from plastic packaging, these chemicals find their way into our bodies in all kinds of ways and are often difficult to avoid. With the potential to have a significant impact on the body, avoiding them is something we should all prioritise. For example, Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals (EDCs) such as phenol, can have a negative impact on our sleep, general development, mood and metabolism. Of course, tolerance to the various toxins varies from person to person and levels which may impact on one individual may be perfectly tolerable to another.

So, what’s the solution? Knowledge is power and finding out your personal levels of unnatural chemicals is the first step in reducing them. Established with the aim of providing individuals with the opportunity to find out whether they are carrying a potentially toxic burden, Lastinghealth offer test kits which help individuals to take control of their wellbeing, now and for the future.
Easy testing… Testing for the unnatural chemicals that could be playing havoc with your system is easy to do and three test kit options are available; toxic non-metal chemical, urinary organic acids & toxic and essential element hair test.
Once you’ve decided the test that’s right for you, it is simply a matter of supplying hair or urine samples to the lab for testing. Results are presented in a straight-forward way and not only does the personalised report detail your individual chemical profile, it also indicates where such chemicals are mostly found along with tips on ways to counteract their impact. With a detailed picture Lastinghealth’s clients are able to make an informed choice about the products they use and can make steps towards reducing their exposure, helping to ensure that that next selfie posted to social media is a picture of health, both inside and out.

THE SOCIAL MEDIA INFLUENCERS CHALLENGING SOCIETAL NORMS ONE SELFIE AT A TIME Instagram has fast become a key platform for social media influencers to dismantle the idea of ‘perfection’ and celebrate the human body in its many different forms. Often criticised for being the root of many people having body confidence issues, social media has been hijacked by a new wave of body positive influencers, who are encouraging women to love, celebrate and embrace their own figures. With an impressive following, these power influencers use their platforms to talk honestly and authentically about societal pressures. GraceVictory @gracefvictory Instagram following: 150k
Hannah Witton @hannahwitton Instagram following: 148k Vlogger and author Hannah Witton has recently sprung into the body positive movement after recently undergoing emergency surgery, which resulted in her now living with a stoma. It’s different but I still love it and proud of it for persevering through all of this!”. In 2017, Witton also published an international book, targeted at young-adults, which explores issues such as relationships and sex education.
Grace Victory, award-winning vlogger, presenter and selfproclaimed ‘internet’s big sister’ speaks frankly on her platforms about being a plus-size woman. She champions the importance of self-care and preaches the need for more open discussions about mental health. In 2016, Grace also worked with BBC Three Online to release a hit documentary Clean Eating’s Dirty Secrets which reached over 1.5 million views. THE FACE OF MALE GROOMING IS CHANGING!
S
Stepping back just ten years, it was the norm to open any cabinet, in any household bathroom, and be faced with shelves stocked with only female beauty products. In terms of men’s products, a deodorant, shaving foam and maybe an aftershave, was probably the extent of a man’s grooming collection. Why? Because body care and grooming were typically associated as a female-only regime and stigmas worked against the favour of those men who wanted to pay more attention to how they look. Now though, there is a noticeable change. Men are spending more time in salon chairs, commanding more space in the bathroom and standing in front of the mirror far more. And, that’s thanks to changes in attitudes, the rise in social
34 //
media and a significant increase in male-steered grooming products. This liberated attitude is giving men everywhere the chance to loosen their ties, roll up their sleeves and make the journey into self-expression – one-moisturiser-at-a-time. Male grooming is a multi-billion-pound industry and sees exfoliants, makeup, moisturisers, oils, hair gels, spot treatments, shampoos and conditioners all far more readily available and even marketed towards men. And, there is no over the counter judgement! Male celebrities – Clooney, Beckham, Farrell – have also jumped on the bandwagon, teaming up with male grooming brands all in aid of de-stigmatising the industry and encouraging men of all ages to take pride in how they look.
Male grooming by nature is about keeping skin and hair neat and tidy, but by no means does it suggest that all facial and body hair has to be removed completely! In fact, we would be missing a trick if we didn’t address the elephant – or beard in this case – in the room. For centuries, a clean, wet shave, may have been the nofuss, groomed look for men and one traditionally associated with a ‘presentable’ gent. But, now with men free to groom as they wish, there is a new generation of males putting money, time and effort into the presentation of their facial hair. The beard boom, as we affectionately call it, like most crazes appeared almost overnight and now men, of all ages, around the world, are ditching the blades in search of a more au naturel image. Like head hair, facial hair needs taming and beard grooming has become somewhat of an art – something some brands have built an entire business model around. Mo Bro’s is one such business whose success has been born out of the love of beards. The Leicestershire-born brand was established in 2014 by bearded brothers – Keval, Kunal and Savan Dattani. Marketed towards beard maintenance, the brand offers butters, balms, oils, wax, cleansers and accessories, all specially formulated to make beard grooming easier and more enjoyable. Taking their beard products into the lair that is, Dragon’s Den, the trio walked away with a £150k investment and are now available in Next, on Amazon and on-board KLM airlines as well as, of course, online at www.mobros.co.uk.
// 35
IT’S A BEARD REVOLUTION Whether you have stubble, or a beard, a goatee or a moustache, Mo Bro’s are here to unite against badly pruned facial hair with their range of beard grooming products. From cleansers and balms to conditioners and styling accessories, all of the products at Mo Bro’s are steered towards one ultimate goal – to make men proud of their beards. Such is the quality, effect and results of their products, Mo Bro’s is loved by bands of bearded brothers across 78 different countries. With Mo Bro’s there’s no more excuses for badly tamed beards…

SPORTS FROM AROUND THE WORLD 2018 has been a great year for the world of sport with the Winter Olympics, Commonwealth Games, and football World Cup all taking place. People from all over the world came together to enjoy some of the biggest sporting events on the planet, but away from these well-known occasions, the world also has plenty of other sports on offer.
A
Aspirational Magazine has taken a look at some of the lesser known, but equally as interesting sports, that are on offer across the globe…
France – Pétanque Similar to the game of bowls that is common throughout the world, pétanque is extremely popular in France even having their own national championships. Played on a hard surface opposed to a flat green, individuals or teams have to score points by throwing a boule closer to the target than their opponent. However, unlike the sport we are all used to, the throwing player has to stand in a small circle as they take their shot. There are several variations to the rules and it is not uncommon to find dedicated pétanque arenas in many French towns and villages.
Israel – Ga-ga Ball Played inside the ‘ga-ga pit’ arena this sport is similar to dodgeball in the sense that players are eliminated by being struck by a ball. The sport can be played one-on-one, with a group of individuals or in teams, and the aim of the game is to hit the ball below your opponent’s knees to eliminate them from the pit. This can be done by kicking or hitting the ball, but players are not allowed to pick up and throw the ball. Ga-ga ball is extremely popular in Israel and has also spread to Australia and North America.
38 / /
Switzerland – Snow Polo Polo is instantly recognisable in the UK with it being a quintessentially British sport played in the summer months. However, in other parts of Europe such as Switzerland, the game has been modified so it can be played all year round. Players ride on horseback attempting to hit a ball into the other team’s goal. Playing the game on snow or ice adds an extra element of excitement, and danger, to the game.
Spain – Bossaball Essentially volleyball on a huge inflatable trampoline, bossaball is an incredibly fun game where the only rule is that the ball must clear the net by the sixth touch. Any part of a player’s body can be used to return the ball, and due to the surface, the game is played on, regularly incorporates acrobatic moves from players.
United States – Quidditch No, you haven’t been transported to the wizarding world of Harry Potter, quidditch is also a sport in the muggle world too. Officially started in 2007 by colleges in America, the sport is now played all over the world. It involves two teams of eight players taking up the various fictional positions from the famous franchise. All players have broomsticks and the aim of the game is to score more points than the opposition. This can be done by throwing a ball through three protected hoops, or ‘catching the snitch’ which comes in the form of an impartial player who has a small ball attached to their shorts.
Finland – Pesapallo Pesapallo, the national sport of Finland, is perhaps most similar to baseball. The two teams take it in turns to individually pitch and bat. The main difference between
pesapallo and baseball is that the ball is pitched vertically, making it arguably easier to hit. This means that teams have to think tactically when it is their turn to pitch. Its popularity in Finland saw the Pesapallo World Cup start in 1992. Other nations such as Sweden, Germany and Australia have competed but Finland have won every single tournament.
United Kingdom – Underwater Hockey Starting on the south coast of England before becoming popular around the world, underwater hockey is one of the most physically demanding sports around. Similar to the main game, but taking place completely underwater, teams of ten attempt to hit the puck into the opposition’s goal. Players are normally extremely good at holding their breath as they only have a snorkel, as frequently returning to the surface for air can disadvantage their team.

RYDER CUP STARS TO DESCEND ON CORNWALL Next year will see a brand-new event on the Staysure Tour, as one of the UK’s most picturesque golf courses, Trevose Golf and Country Club, gets ready to host the inaugural Farmfoods European Legends Links Championship. New for 2019, leading event organisers and golf promoters, Champions (UK) plc, are delighted to present the event which will take place between 20–23 June 2019 at the stunning venue which is just five miles west of Padstow. The championship is set to offer up an exciting yet challenging four days of golf. Welcoming some of the greatest golfers to have ever graced the sport, this event will be the first time in which the club’s expansive 18-hole Championship Course has hosted an official Staysure Tour event and so players are sure to want to make their mark.
THE FORMAT 20 June – Pro-Am team event On the Thursday, play will begin with a Pro-Am team event where teams of four, (one pro golfer paired with three amateurs), play alongside one another and bid for team success. The best two scores out of the four players in each
team, on each hole, contributes towards the final total of the round. On Thursday evening, after an exhilarating day’s play, guests and players alike are invited to a black-tie, three course dinner, with Champagne, entertainment and charity fundraising.
21-22 June – Alliance With each Alliance team made up of one amateur and one Staysure Tour professional, the two-day event is extremely popular among those wishing to experience a truly professional round of golf. Overall scores are taken from the best score of the two players on each hole. Playing with a professional will give amateurs the opportunity to gain hints and tips from the pro as well as fight for a team prize.
23 June – Professional shoot-out For the final day’s play the amateurs will step aside and the pros will spend the day going head to head in a bid to take the championship title. Professionals including the likes of Ian Woosnam OBE, Paul Lawrie OBE, Paul McGinley, Peter Baker and Costantino Rocca, are all currently playing on the Staysure Tour.

First opened in 1925, the rolling course was lovingly designed by renowned golf course architect, Harry Colt. The result is a true test of golfing ability as each of the 18 holes throw up their own unique challenge.
There are a number of ways in which you or your business can get involved with the Staysure Tour’s newest event at Trevose Golf and Country Club next year. THE RETURN OF THE FARMFOODS EUROPEAN SENIOR MASTERS
F
Following the success of last year’s inaugural event, this year marked the eagerly anticipated return of the Farmfoods European Senior Masters. Once again taking to the Forest of Arden Marriott Hotel & Country Club in picturesque Warwickshire, the Staysure Tour event included a stellar list of pros, from Ryder Cup winners, to legends of the European Tour.
an amateur partner with a Staysure professional, and once again there was a stellar line-up of players on the green. These included: 1991 Masters winner, Ian Woosnam OBE, French stars Jean van de Velde and Thomas Levet, Italian legend Costantino Rocca, European Tour winner Jarmo Sandelin, Staysure Tour player, Gary Wolstenholme MBE and event host, Peter Baker.
Thursday 4 October The first day kicked off with a fantastic Pro-Am which saw a whole host of Staysure Tour icons get to grips with the Championship Course prior to the main event getting underway on the Friday. In what was a team event, one Staysure Tour professional was paired with three amateurs and it was ‘Team Sofidel’ who came out on top. With a score of 90 points they clinched victory with the help of South Africa star, James Kingston, the team’s professional player. Castle Gate Financial Management were in second place with a score of 89 alongside Challenge Tour star, Paul Streeter, and ‘Woburn Whizzes’ in third with a score of 86. They were led by former Ryder Cup star, Thomas Levet. Friday 5 October The real competition began on the Friday as the competitive aspect of the event got underway. The Alliance element saw

And, it was Austrian star Markus Brier who took the lead early on. Scoring a fantastic -7 on the opening day, this performance saw him finish two strokes clear of Spaniard, Santiago Luna, three ahead of Ian Woosnam OBE and four ahead of Peter Baker - scoring three birdies, the European Tour winner put himself in an extremely strong position ahead of the second day’s play.

Rain delayed play on Saturday, meaning players had a shotgun start in the afternoon. It was Santiago Luna who impressed when play did eventually start and was one of only four players who managed to hit under par rounds due to the relentless conditions.
Conditions played havoc on day three of the event, but it couldn’t stop a dramatic final day of action at the Forest of Arden. The amateurs made way on the final day as the professionals battled it out as the competition reached its climax. With a €200,000 prize fund up for grabs, €50,000 of which going to the winner, the final day was fiercely contested.
Leapfrogging overnight leader, Markus Brier, Luna was joined by Peter T Wilson at the top of the leaderboard, as they finished the day on -7 in a two-way tie, one stroke ahead of Brier. 2004 British Masters winner, Barry Lane, who has a history of winning at the Forest of Arden, was also within touching distance with a score of -5. The Alliance team event was also being played alongside the main competition and saw Liverpool legend, Steve Staunton and Gary Marks triumph with a score of -14. This win saw the pair take home some great prizes including a large suitcase with Sub70 merchandise inside, an Eleven golf bag with three and four rescue clubs, a leather score card, a pair of Duca del Cosma shoes and a one night stay with dinner, as well as a round of golf for two, across five Marriott Country Clubs in the UK. In second place were James Kingston and Jeremy Wilson, with Duncan Sinclair, Stephen Bennett and Jarmo Sandelin in third. All of these players also won a widerange of fantastic prizes for their achievement.
50 / /
It was Santiago Luna who maintained his grip on the competition, he began the day tied with Peter T. Wilson with the lead but soon began to pull away from the pack. Scoring birdies on the fourth, sixth and seventh holes, he soon had a three stroke advantage on the rest of the field. Bogeying the 16 th, things suddenly became too close for comfort for Luna as Ian Woosnam OBE moved to within on shot of the Spaniard. However, Luna remained composed and birdied the next hole which secured his title. This win marks his fourth title on the Staysure Tour, and his first of the 2018 season. Speaking of the victory he said: “This week was fantastic. I have a good relationship with the golf course. I hit it fantastically and I had a good feeling on the greens and that was really important because the greens were unbelievable. They were really fast but really nice, the golf course was unbelievable, and I played really well. I kept a good attitude, and everything was with me.”

THE FATHER, SON AND P1 PANTHER For around 2,600 years the world has known that a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. For businessman and entrepreneur Asif Rangoonwala his journey has involved building a commercially viable and credible international marine motorsport business, and his first step was in Italy in 2003 when Powerboat P1 held its first race event. Since then, P1 has staged more than 600 races in 18 countries on four continents and jet ski racing has been added to its product portfolio.
T
The Panther is born The first leg of Asif ’s journey, which took his offshore powerboat world championship featuring mono-hull, twin-engine boats to a host of glamorous locations, came to an end in 2010 when he decided to strategically refocus the business to build a genuine motorsport platform by implementing a new business model based on ground-up development. At the heart of the launch of one-design, single-engine national racing series in the UK and USA the following year – the P1 SuperStock Championships - was the new Panther race boat, designed by P1 and built in Florida where the company has an office in Orlando. The Panther was to be the catalyst for the next leg of Asif ’s journey. P1 SuperStock has established itself as one of the most affordable, accessible and competitive forms of motorsport, with identical boats and engines creating a level playing field where it’s the racers that make the difference. It was designed to be raced close to shore on a short and tight course to provide a demanding racing experience and entertainment for the live, television and online audiences. The major change was that P1 took control of all the commercial properties – from boat production through to the podiums.
Passage to India Over the past eight years the P1 Panther fleet has raced in Florida, the UK, Denmark and India, where the natural amphitheatre of Mumbai’s splendid sweeping bay provided

the venue for the first P1 SuperStock World Championship last year. The event introduced the sport to a new audience on the sub-continent and the nine hours of live television coverage played a considerable role in taking powerboat racing to the next level on its journey to becoming a mainstream sport. As a result of his somewhat non-traditional educational background, Asif will tell you that he learned most of what he knows about business from his father and the old saying that ‘one father is more than a hundred schoolmasters’ readily comes to mind. He is now embarking on the third leg of his journey in the role of a father himself, and his son Azam - an engineering graduate, former racer and now chief executive of P1 – is leading the team that will take the Panther to a new level and spearhead growth in the P1 SuperStock series.

Upgrade underway P1 is embarking on a major programme over the coming months to significantly upgrade its fleet of Panther race boats in the United States in readiness for the 2019 season. Following the Panthers being fitted with new carbon hulls ahead of this season and the announcement that they will be repowering for 2019 with the new Mercury Racing 4.6L V-8 four-stroke 300R outboard, P1 has unveiled plans to revolutionise the SuperStock championship and attract a new set of racers by converting to canopy race boats. The hull replacement work on the P1 SuperStock USA fleet was carried out over last winter, with the new hulls being built with an advanced fusion system using a foam core and custom blend resins. The work was carried out in Florida by specialist boat builders, Wilson Custom Composites.
Hello 300R Mercury Racing’s relationship with Powerboat P1 includes them being the presenting sponsor of the P1 SuperStock Championship and in July this year they announced that their all-new 300R V-8 four-stroke outboard will replace
the legacy two-stroke 300XS as the exclusive power for both next year’s USA series and any international venues. Designed, developed and manufactured in-house, the 300R features a heavy-duty midsection with solid mounts, race-proven Sport Master gearcase and handcrafted Mercury Racing Rev 4 propeller. The naturally aspirated four-stroke V-8 powerhead provides an astonishing 44% increase in displacement and 40% more bottom-end torque compared to the 300XS it replaces. Rick Mackie, PR & Communications Manager at Mercury Racing, believes the SuperStock teams will be impressed: “They will experience a noticeable improvement in acceleration – particularly useful when powering out of turns – together with an improvement in top-end speeds.”
Canopy is coming Working closely with the key players on all aspects of the upgrade will be Martin Sanborn, who was one of the lead developers of the P1 Panther and will take it to the next level through utilising the resources of the Performance Boat Centre in Florida. He makes clear that the move to the canopy configuration will have a number of important

results including increased safety for the crews, improved race performance and the change from a mechanical control system to a digital throttle and shift system which will increase responsiveness and simplify the rigging process for the boats. Martin Sanborn points out that the work to be carried out will be compliant with current UIM and APBA certification, and he is keen to highlight the safety and performance benefits that will result from the canopy system: “The canopy and cockpit will feature a carbon composite structure that is both light and exceptionally strong. Engineering, that will include a complex integration of a polycarbonate windscreen and receiver together with recessed carbon hatches, is targeted with aerodynamic, hydrodynamic and mechanical impact considerations to provide maximum protection to the racers. The boats will see another weight loss resulting in a lowering of the vertical centre of gravity and better handling. Craig Wilson added: “Powerboat P1 has leap frogged the marine industry by having the most technically advanced, full safety canopy system and interior available. The DDCompound racing seats will be carbon/glass with billet aluminium brackets and stainless-steel runners. Billet aluminium parts are precision engineered out of solid blocks to deliver a high degree of precision and great structural strength. The seats are tested to withstand huge G-forces and will be fitted with a 6-point harness. We will make the P1 Panther a racing work of art.” Azam Rangoonwala concluded by saying: “The canopy version of the P1 Panther will be going through a rigorous testing program later this year that will include offshore rough water testing, propeller selection and performance tests with the 300R installed. The combination of new power and sleek, new hulls will bring an extra dimension to the SuperStock series where the focus will be even more on boat setup and driver skill. I can’t wait for the green flag to drop next May!” Photo captions Left page: The P1 Panther in Florida this year Main: Azam in his powerboat racing days Rop right: Powerboat P1 partners with Mercury Racing Bottom: Azam and Asif at a P1 race event

LAMBORGHINI URUS – THE FIRST SUV SUPERCAR…
W
When you think of Italian luxury car brand Lamborghini, the first things that spring to mind are often speed, style and power. With many of their super sports cars only having two seats, practicality is not normally the priority for the brand. However, their new URUS model looks to challenge the status quo. A family-friendly SUV that still incorporates all of the features you’d expect to see on a traditional Lamborghini, the URUS has been six years in the making after first being showcased at the Beijing Auto Show in 2012. Unlike many of the brand’s other offerings, the URUS caters to mass customers and offers a more suitable, day-to-day driving experience. Described as the first SSUV (super sports utility vehicle) big things are expected of the URUS, and the CEO of EMEA Region at Lamborghini, Andrea Baldi, spoke to Inspirational London about the companys’ shift into the SUV market. “We wanted to explore the potential in the SUV market. There are lots of people out there who like Lamborghini as a brand but haven’t considered purchasing one due to it not being versatile enough and not delivering on practicality. So, we decided to create a super sport, versatile motor as this was the direction we saw the market going. Today SUV is recognised as one of the biggest growing areas in the automotive industry, but at the time it was a brave decision for us to take and one all our competitors are now following. Clearly this was the right thing to do and since the official launch of the car in December 2017 we have received thousands of orders and the waiting list is now over a year long.” Whilst the URUS is certainly a more practical option of vehicle, the team at Lamborghini have not had to compromise on any of the specifications we all know and love. The URUS can reach a top speed of 305 km/h, reach 0-60 mph in 3.6 seconds, and has a whole host of customisable options for drivers to choose from. These personalised touches are often what make Lamborghini’s so special and Andrea explained what the URUS has to offer in this regard. “Everyone who has had the chance to test drive the car, has given amazing feedback. You can choose any colour or material for the inside from carbon fibre to some of the most luxurious fabrics. This means you end up with a car
58 //
that is completely unique. This makes the process fun but also provides a bespoke result for customers.” The URUS offers drivers six distinct driving modes of Strada (street), Sport, Corsa (track), Terra (dirt/ off-road), Sabbia (sand) and Neve (snow) meaning the car is ideal for all surfaces. These modes can be activated by an interface on the dashboard which drivers can change at just the tap of a button, as Andrea explained further: “I think the most impressive thing people have been saying about the car is that when people are driving it on the racetrack they are forgetting it’s an SUV. At the same time when they are driving it in any other condition, it feels like they are driving another car too. So, with the URUS, it is giving people the impression they have several different souls of in the one car.” Despite the URUS being very different to the Huracan and Aventador models that have come before it, whenever Lamborghini create a new model they need to ensure that it reflects their iconic brand heritage. Andrea described how important this is: “It is absolutely paramount. First of all, when you design a Lamborghini you have to make sure that whatever the final result, anyone can identify the car as a Lamborghini without even seeing the logo. It requires certain technical specifications such as a very low centre and this therefore influences the design of the car, such as the position of the engine, and it also needs the shape of car that is synonymous with Lamborghini. The combination of all these things is important to shape the car into what we recognise as a Lamborghini.”
We wanted to explore the potential in the SUV market.

MIDSUMMER HOUSE... Photography by Tim Green
T
Tucked away in the idyllic Cambridgeshire countryside, Midsummer House offers guests a dining experience like no other. The elegant décor in the venue instantly makes guests feel at home as they settle down to enjoy their lunch or dinner. Midsummer’s sophisticated à la carte main course menu features sumptuous dishes such as buttered poached Cornish cod, roasted langoustine with cauliflower puree, and veal kidney with parsley, snails, onion and buttered spinach. Guests are also able to experience an incredible eight course tasting menu. This year, Midsummer House has celebrated its 20th anniversary. Prior to becoming an eatery in the 1980s, the venue was a private residence and dog breeding home before being purchased by Daniel Clifford in 1998. From here, Midsummer House was born and has since continued to go from strength to strength over the last two decades. Starting out with just one kitchen, the venue now has four and put their heart and soul into every dish they serve. This passion
60 / /
stems from Daniel’s love for food, something that shines through in everything he does. From humble beginnings in a kitchen at Canterbury Christchurch University, to heading up a Two Michelin-star establishment in France, Daniel’s culinary experiences have clearly shaped his visions for the dishes at Midsummer House. Regarded as one of the most creative and innovative chefs of his generation, Daniel has won numerous awards in his career including being crowned ‘Chef’s Chef of the Year’ at the 2015/16 AA Awards. However, despite having plenty of accomplishments to choose from, Daniel places the two Michelin stars that he has won at Midsummer House as the pinnacle of his career. Inspirational London spoke to Daniel about his career. When did you know you wanted to be a chef? “When I went to work experience in a kitchen at Canterbury Christchruch University I fell in love with cooking. It’s the most creative job in the world. Everyday something different happens. You
are working with natural produce and it’s exciting, every day you have the thrill of customers coming and you have to get their dinner ready. It’s all in your hands and you have to get it right. Getting the two Michelin stars is probably the biggest thing I have achieved. That is the ultimate goal as a chef.” Your cooking is described as ‘modern British cooking, underpinned by an unmistakably French style.’ What did you learn from your time in France? “I trained a lot with French chefs, so that aspect of it will always come across in my food. In this era, we are open to so many more ingredients than we used to be, so you have to have an open-mind and be prepared to try different things. The produce in France is just phenomenal. They have so much respect for it, and things like tomatoes, herbs and fish are just incredible. Rather than going to one supplier for everything they go to people who are specialists in each area.” What are your plans for the future of Midsummer House? “I built Midsummer House around what I think the restaurant needs to become one of the best in the country and we are still trying to achieve that, so we are changing on a daily basis. I always wanted my own restaurant, I didn’t know if I wanted to take it as far as we have done, but once you have the bug you can’t stop!” We have 38 staff cooking for 42 people, everyone who works here cares and give 110% every day. Everything is cooked to order, and everything is prepared on a daily basis. We do everything with a lot of passion and a lot of love. Going forward I want it to become more tranquil, more relaxed and give people a once in a lifetime opportunity.”

DISCOVER SOME OF BUDAPEST’S HIDDEN GEMS... Hungary’s capital city, Budapest, attracts over four million visitors every year, and is famous for a whole host of buzzing tourist spots including the Hungarian Parliament, Buda Castle and the Fisherman’s Bastion on the bank of the Danube river.
H
However, away from the usual ‘places to see’ the city is also home to some hidden gems. Here at Inspirational London we looked beyond the tourist’s eyes to explore some of the more unique things to do in Budapest…
Visit a bear sanctuary Just a short train or car drive out of the city, the nearby town of Veresegyhàz is home to a fantastic bear sanctuary. Built in 1998, it is central Europe’s only dedicated bear shelter and has brown bears in its care. Rescued from circuses in Romania, the bears have over five hectares of land to enjoy, and share the sanctuary with wolves, big cats and racoons.
Undoubtedly the highlight of visiting the sanctuary is being able to get up close and personal with the wonderful creatures. A once in a lifetime opportunity, guests are able to feed the bears honey from a wooden spoon and it is an activity that will warm the hearts of adults and children alike.
Take a hike up the stunning Buda Hills The natural wonders of Buda Hills can be seen from the heart of the city itself, but if you want to experience them in the flesh, then a hike through this area is a must. Trek up to the famous Elizabeth Lookout tower which is located at the very top of the picturesque location. From this point you will experience panoramic views of the city, as well as explore the Buda Hills themselves. There are hiking trails available for people of all ability, but if you would prefer, a stair-lift is available to take you straight to the top.
Head for a drink at Szimpla Kert Budapest isn’t short of places to eat and drink, but the city’s ruin bars really are worth a visit. Built within the ruins of buildings, Szimpla Kert is arguably the best of all. From live music to quirky décor, the bar even has a disused Trabant car located in its centre. An open-air bar, the venue also puts on cinema nights and always has a fantastic atmosphere and is certainly a highlight of Budapest’s nightlife scene.
64 / /
Take in Budapest’s graffiti scene Many of Europe’s major cities has a prominent graffiti scene, and Budapest is no exception. You can a get map of some of the best pieces in the city, or just stumble upon some remarkable graffiti art as you are going about your day. The city still has plenty of former communist style buildings and these are often where some of the best graffiti can be found. From political pieces, to artwork detailing some of Hungary’s greatest sporting achievements, there is plenty of extraordinary pieces to discover, particularly in the city’s Seventh District.
Explore underground caves Everyone is familiar with Budapest’s natural thermal baths which can be found throughout the city, but what most tourists perhaps do not realise, is that there is also an entire passageway of underground caves to explore. Linked to the thermal waters which heat the baths, you can discover the fascinating history of how these caves were formed and check out the amazing stalagmites and stalactites that have been formed over thousands of years. Be sure to remember to take a jacket though as it can be chilly down there, despite the usually warm temperatures that Budapest boasts.

Langan’s Brasserie is arguably one of the most iconic eateries in London, boasting an interesting history, a menu that showcases traditionally British cuisine, and an interior easily mistaken for a high-profile art gallery. Located on Stratton Street in the affluent Mayfair, which is awash with fine architecture and five star hotels, Langan’s Brasserie was founded in 1976 by entrepreneur Peter Langan and his actor friend and business partners, Sir Michael Caine CBE and Richard Shepherd CBE (the first ever Michelin starred chef). Under the trio’s wing, the restaurant quickly became a haunt for the world's most famous faces, seating the likes of the iconic Dame Elizabeth Taylor, Mohammed Ali, Sir Mick Jagger and Jack Nicholson. An avid art enthusiast, Peter also built a prestigious art collection with originals from dear friends and famed artists including Francis Bacon and David Hockney. To this day the restaurant and private dining area’s walls are still adorned with original paintings, a feature that brings guests to the brasserie time and time again. Sadly Peter passed away in 1988 due to a fire at his home, however his legacy lives on. Offering an exciting range of traditional British fayre, at Langan’s, diners find a delicious mix of vibrant dishes all made from fresh ingredients. Dishes include, spinach souffle, grilled Dover sole with parsley butter, Veal Saltimbocca and beef Wellington with Madeira sauce. The menus have, of course, naturally changed with the times, but there are still a few dishes that pay homage to the brasserie’s history and have remained on the menu since the day it’s doors first opened. The brasserie, which also offers a decadent bar area, is truly the perfect destination for both art and food lovers alike.

COCKTAILS THAT TELL A STORY Vibrant and edgy are just some of the words that came to mind when Inspirational London stepped off the busy streets of St James’s and through the doors of Quaglino’s.
A
A bustling hive of activity, the brasserie’s art deco exterior that greets you on arrival instantly makes you want to explore more... and the bar is always a good place to start. Quaglino’s have concocted an all-new cocktail menu that tells a story and shares a message through each and every one of its drinks. Committed to sustainability, the cocktail menu takes you on a journey through some of the biggest impacts on the environment, from climate change to plastic use. And, with each a nod towards these issues, all of the cocktail’s flavours, ingredients and presentation draws influence from its story. Their food menus are not to be neglected though, as Quaglino’s truly is a haven for the foodies out there. With lunch, à la carte, Saturday and Sunday menus, no matter the time of day or week you choose to visit, you won’t be disappointed. A delicious mix of shellfish, meats and a beautifully cooked grill selection awaits you, as well as an impressive choice of caviar.
The entire experience is heightened more so if you catch a live music day, that are so good, you could easily find yourself staying for ‘just one more’. A food, drink and music scene you don’t want to pass you buy, Quaglino’s is certainly worth a visit! 16 Bury Street, London SW1Y 6AJ e: quaglinos@danddlondon.com t: 020 7930 6767 www.quaglinos-restaurant.co.uk
Inspirational London’s cocktail pick: Vitamin Sea A scan of the eclectic cocktail menu at Quaglino’s could leave even the most confident of cocktail connoisseurs overwhelmed by its extensive variety of options and flavours. During our visit though, one stood out most – the Vitamin Sea. A gin-based cocktail the Hendricks was complemented by the subtle flavours of nori seaweed, bergamot, ginger, lavender, samphire and jasmine air. The drink itself is served in a beautiful seashell which is then presented to you on a bed of crushed ice. It’s the message behind this cocktail that caught our attention most though. The cocktail has been inspired by the ocean and the danger plastic can pose on marine life.

THE BEST OF BRITISH AT THE MARKSMAN
I
The Marksman Public House on Hackney Road is one of East London’s most well-loved drinking dens and dining rooms.
It came under the ownership of veteran chefs Tom Harris and Jon Rotheram in 2015 and has gone on to win an array of accolades, including Michelin Pub of the Year in 2017. At the forefront of the renaissance of the great British pub, the offering here is one that fits effortlessly within the capital’s contemporary dining scene. Uniquely, the kitchen is headed up by the two owners, head chefs Tom and Jon, who worked together at St John Bar and Restaurant in Smithfield, before embarking on their dream to serve their vision of British cuisine in an historic environment. The menu at The Marksman is not about recreating traditional pub fare, but about cooking food that is inspired by London’s diverse histories. Expect to find locally sourced dishes such as duck hearts & chanterelles on toast, cured beef, beetroot and sour cream and devilled cuttlefish & pickled onion to start. Autumnal mains include Tamworth belly ham, Hispi cabbage & mustard and pumpkin tart, goat’s curd & hazelnut. To finish, we love their selection of sweet and savoury British puddings, and have a particular soft spot for their signature brown butter and honey tart.
82 / /
For larger parties of up to 12, The Cellar Room is the latest addition to The Marksman dining experience. Framed just meters away from the busy kitchen, this is an intimate space where seasonally changing feasting menus are presented to the guests by the chefs themselves. And of course, it wouldn’t be The Marksman without their signature Beef & Barley buns, a recipe Jon Rotheram has developed over the years and built up quite a name for. Look out for their West London bunshop, in the newly opened Victoria Market Halls, where Jon and Tom give these legendary savoury buns centre stage. 254 Hackney Road, London, E2 7SJ t: 0207 739 7393 www.marksmanpublichouse.com
EXCEPTIONAL PIZZA IN THE HEART OF LONDON WITH MANIFESTO
N
Not always known as a culinary hotspot, Northcote Road in Clapham has recently gained an excellent asset: a neighbourhood pizzeria from Vittorio Maschio. Vittorio is the former director of Natoora, one of the best ingredient supply businesses in the world.
The 30-cover restaurant specialises in pizza made using the Biga-style technique of dough production, which takes 48 hours of proving. The flour is sourced from Molino Pasini, who for over 80 years under the same family, have produced flour of the highest quality.
Having been in charge of their high-end ingredient sales to Michelin starred chefs across London, he knows a thing or two about provenance, and felt the best way to honour these truly excellent ingredients was through truly exceptional pizza. As such, he’s devised a markedly short seasonally changing menu that showcases ingredients throughout the year. Chefs such as Mark Hix are getting involved too, taking part in a series of guest pizzas.
Being Italian, Vittorio believes quality pizza is a perfect setting for fine produce to be enjoyed, at a price that won’t break the bank, as pizzas start at £6.50. A particular favourite of ours is Apollo 11. It has a ricotta base, rocket, spicy salami and chilli (£7.80) and the back story is just as impressive. The meat is from Pedrazzoli, founded in 1951 and still a family business. It started producing organic charcuterie 22 years ago, pioneering when nobody else was discussing animal welfare and organic methods. Working with their own pigs to maintain the best level of quality and 100% traceability, this is a company determinedly promoting organic food and animal welfare within the industry. With so many London restaurants these days being all style and no substance, it’s refreshing to find something so pared back and unassuming. It’s some of the best pizza we’ve tasted this side of Italy, and well worth a visit. 148 Northcote road, London, SW11 6RD www.manifestopizza.com

EXPERIENCE THE BEST ALGARVIAN CUISINE The talk of the town since it opened this summer, Casa Do Frango brings Algarvian food – and most importantly good, authentic piri piri chicken - to London. Having been hugely acclaimed by the critics, this latest addition to London’s burgeoning Portuguese dining scene is well worth a visit.
T
The restaurant specialises in regional Algarvian-style piri piri chicken “frango” cooked over wood charcoal using traditional techniques. Having spent a lot of time in Portugal, Jake and Marco decided to bring a type of Portuguese cooking yet to be authentically explored in London. Highlights from the small and concise menu include grilled piri piri prawns with white wine and garlic, ‘Super Bock’ beer battered whitebait with smoked paprika aioli, and our firm favourite, African rice with crispy chicken skin, chorizo and plantain. Then comes the chicken itself. Free ranged and locally sourced, chargrilled options include piri piri, oregano and lemon and garlic, all served with a fiery bright red sauce. A selection of accessible and more experimental Portuguese wines are on offer, with a particular focus on

green wines. Inquisitive guests may even discover a hidden bar. A candlelit, more formal affair known as the Green Room, it’s the worst kept secret in London Bridge. The décor is perfectly suited. Casual, light and filled with greenery, it gives guests the feeling of dining al fresco, at communal tables and counter dining. A vaulted ceiling with a giant glass skylight overhead allows natural light to fall. It has the down to earth mood of classic Portuguese tascas, playing on Portugal’s rich cultural heritage. Details include the suspended ceiling fans, and hand-painted detailing upon the bar-front which resemble Portugal’s famous 1900’s trams. 1st Floor, 32 Southwark Street, London, SE1 1TU www.casadofrango.co.uk

buttery pumpkin and sage tortelloni, perfect for chilly autumn evenings. A fun and lively space, the centre of the restaurant has a table laden with Italian goodies: cheeses, olives and freshly baked breads, and a meat slicer for Italian and house-made charcuterie.
Starters include chestnut arancini & red pepper pesto, sardines on toast, stracciatelle, garlic and chilli dressing, and crispy zucchini, parmesan, pomodoro sauce. Progressing to mains, expect to find braised pork cheek, roast celeriac, parmesan dumpling, or pan-fried cod, borlotti bean puree, spring greens, onion, samphire, all of which change seasonally. Homemade pasta dishes such as rigatoni with Sicillian Sausage and ricotta gnudi with endive and apple balsamic dressing are central to the menu. One of our favourite pasta dishes in London is the deliciously
In the Aperitivi bar, the cocktail list showcases the traditional Italian offerings with a twist, including seven variations of the timeless cocktails Negroni, Bellini and the house Aperitivi menu, the Mezzoemezzo. The wine list features famous Barolos, SuperTuscans, indigenous grape varieties and the new generation winemakers from Puglia, Sicily and Sardinia. Be sure to opt for a glass of Franciacorta too – Italy’s answer to Champagne, made in the same style and woefully overlooked. Oh, and don’t forget to save room for dessert. Apricot tart with Amaretto ice cream, Tonka Bean panna cotta, and last but not least, their legendary tiramisu. REAL HALAL CHOICES YOU CAN TRUST Since 2011, Haloodies has committed to offering halal-living consumers real choices.
Quality and trust sit at the heart of everything Haloodies. That means delivering only the very best chicken, beef and lamb products. With 100% traceability and Red Tractor pasture to plate credibility, Haloodies is fast becoming the UK’s go-to halal brand. And, as demand has grown, so too has the range. As well as their raw meat and their succulent cooked chicken for people on-the-go, their newly launched premium gourmet burgers has seen them expand their halal offering once again. Haloodies know that millions of Muslims love a nice, juicy burger. But, historically, have found it difficult to pin down a quality brand that is a reliable fit for halal living. Haloodies has set out to change all that with their premium gourmet burger range.
“Our burgers now being available in Morrisons stores is great news for Muslim consumers, whose commitment to halal living has traditionally meant limited choices in the food market. At Haloodies, we’re always looking for innovative products that meet the evolving needs of the halal consumer, so we’re proud to expand our Morrisons offering beyond the cooked chicken products they already stock. “We’ve got to give great credit to our valued manufacturers, Kepak, who produce burgers that not only taste fantastic but also have a high beef content of 80%. We’re committed to providing the best quality meat products, so we will continue working with them to ensure that 80% rises even higher.”
Newly stocked in multiple Morrisons stores, the frozen burgers include 2 x pack of quarter pounders – ideal for couples, millennials and students – and 6 x pack of 2oz burgers – perfect for families. The burgers, like all of their products, have full traceability and are halal certified with BRC AA+ and IFS accreditation, giving peace of mind to hungry Muslims up and down the country. And it’s important to note, too, that they’re made from grass-fed Irish beef, for a juicier taste sensation. Noman Khawaja, is Haloodies’ co-founder, and said:

THE DESIGNERS TAKING INTERIOR DESIGN TO THE NEXT LEVEL
F
Fendi, Dolce & Gabbana, Diesel and Hermès – all big names in the fashion industry, all of them repeatedly dominate the catwalk and all of them are regularly featured in the most prestigious of publications. They all have something else in common, (besides paving the way for fashionistas to follow), with each one steadily emerging in the world of interior design. From kitchenware and living room must-haves to outdoor furniture and more, even some well-known brands you wouldn’t expect are now making their way into homes. Each year, interior designers culminate at the annual Salone del Mobile. Hosted in Milan, the fashion capital of the world, the event welcomes some of the world’s most prolific designers all showcasing their interior spaces.
One of the most talked about occasions of the year, next to the fashion week, April 2018 marked the 57th edition of the event and to put into perspective the number of people that turn out to see the latest offerings from the interior designers… it was attended by 435,065 people from five continents and 188 different countries. Not that they had anyone doubting their design prowess, but Dolce & Gabbana once again delivered came unveiling a stunning collaboration with appliance company SMEG. 2018 marks the third instalment of their partnership with the brand and never a designer to shy away from extravagance, D&G brought ceramic pottery designs to a fridge and range cooker. LIVING is the house and home collection by Diesel and sees the brand hone in on furniture, accessories, linen, lighting, kitchen, ceramics and even flooring. A wide array of designer offerings, the brand is certainly one for those looking for a bit of edge with their designs modern in nature and interesting to the eye. Fendi has created a sub-brand, Fendi Casa, a licensed brand of Luxury Living Group. The Italian designer adds its signature style to hotels, château residences and yachts around the world and “integrates modern advancements with retro details”.
96 / /
Designing for all rooms in the home, and never neglecting the final details, Fendi Casa is an interior brand which has become synonymous for designs to make you drool. It’s showroom in London’s district of Knightsbridge is well worth a visit, whether you are looking for inspiration for your own home, or simply dare to dream. Luxury Living Group is an interior business catering solely to the designer market and holds licenses to many of the most exclusive interior brands in the world including: Heritage, Ritz Paris, Bugatti Home, Bentley home and more. And, before you scan back a sentence, no, you didn’t read that wrong, two of the world’s most luxurious car brands have also put their name to interior design. Responsible for designing some of the most beautiful high-performance cars in the world, Bugatti has kept their interior collections small and selective. Their interior pieces, which include desks, chairs, coffee tables and sofas, are ahead of the time and modern with most carrying the same curvature as their motors.
Fellow automotive company, Bentley, have opted for a more extensive collection of interiors comprising sideboards, desk chairs, lamps, cupboards and beds. The same level of craftmanship and attention to detail has been paid to their interior pieces, as their cars, with their collection of homewear’s upholstery carrying the brand’s iconic diamond quilt stitch. As for the colours, they are as chic and classic as the cars themselves carrying neutral hues of creams, whites and browns. With a designer for every discerning interior enthusiast, and pieces to suit all tastes, there’s no doubt that one piece, or an entire house by these designers will add something extra special to your space.

ENJOY YOUR GARDEN ALL YEAR ROUND At this time of year, many of us, understandably, neglect our gardens in search of comfort and warmth inside.
W
With the colder temperatures and less than impressive weather, as a general we all spend little to no time in our gardens, but Inspirational London are here to encourage you to step outside and enjoy your garden all year round…
Keep warm with a firepit Just because the temperature is dropping shouldn’t mean your use of outdoor space should suffer. It may be a slightly different experience to spending time outside to when
the sun is shining, but a firepit can be the outdoor living accessory needed to make sure you continue to make the most of your garden space. Firepits and wood burners can keep you toasty and warm even on the chilliest of days and make for great additions to your garden. Fantastic for socialising, a firepit will certainly bring people together this autumn/winter.
Get comfy with rattan furniture When sitting outside at winter time you want to minimise feeling cold in any way you can. With this in mind metallic patio and garden furniture is a definite no-no. So, instead, why not opt for rattan furniture? Both stylish and practical, this furniture makes for a fantastic addition to anyone’s garden and is both comfortable to sit on as well as great to look at. When purchasing any garden furniture look for waterproof options or consider how it will fare in the winter climes.
Stay sheltered with a garden igloo Ok, so probably not what you were expecting, but believe us, garden igloos are a new and popular trend. The weather resistant product comes with transparent windows and retains heat so that you and your loved ones can remain nice and cosy whilst enjoying the winter evenings.
98 //
Illuminate your garden With darkness creeping in ever-earlier and limiting your evenings, garden lighting is a great way to extend your time outside. Whether this comes in the form of floor lighting or fairy lights draped within your trees, or more of a large-scale lighting system, these will help you to fully enjoy everything your garden has to offer. If you want to make sure your lights are sustainable, then solar lighting is a great choice, and despite the myths they can still be used in winter time when the natural light isn’t as long-lasting.

MAKE YOUR HOME COLOURFUL
H
Let’s face it, as human beings we are creatures of habit. So, when the weather turns we recoil into our homes, opting instead for a day (or an entire weekend) in front of the fire.
However, just because the weather is less than impressive outside, and stormy greys are becoming the normal colour palette when looking through the windows, it doesn’t mean the colours inside your home can’t be bright. Take a read of Inspirational London’s guide to how to beat those winter blues by simply injecting some colourful fever into your home… 1. Accessorise, accessorise, accessorise Accessorising is probably one of the most pleasing exercises for the interior design enthusiasts among us. From luxurious throws draped on the arm of sofas, patterned linen and layers of colourful cushions on the bed, the possibilities for accessorising is endless. Don’t be afraid to play around with colours and contrast either. Mix seasonal colours such as warm autumnal oranges with wintery hues such as cobalt blues. Or, try greys with springtime yellows.
A visit to your local antique shop is great for finding unique pieces that not only tell a story, but also make a statement. We have also fallen in love with the latest autumn/winter home wear collections from Anthropologie, Wayfair and Oliver Bonas. 2. A lick of paint is all it takes A feature wall has long been loved as a way of bringing colour into the home, without having to redecorate the entire house. Away from feature walls though, painting other areas of the house with one statement colour such as the inside of alcoves, built in book shelves and even ceilings will create a talking point in your home. Furniture is often overlooked when finding ways of bringing colour into the home, but overlook no more as painting dining table chairs, furniture legs, sideboards and table tops will instantly revive your interior. Farrow & Ball are synonymous for their vast colour palette, so there is a colour for every wall in every house. 3. A frenzy for flowers Whether you fake it or opt for fresh, flowers are a simple but effective way of injecting small splashes of colour into your home. A subtle way of making each room seem instantly more welcoming, flowers can play a big part in bringing to life unimaginative, bland spaces, such as long narrow hallways and white bathrooms. And, thanks to flower delivery services such as Bloom & Wild, you can enjoy new bunches of colour each week or month.
100 / /
By simply playing around with different flower types scales, vase shapes and glass colour you can also make each bunch look different. Made.com is our favourite place to source unique and colourful vase designs.
You can fit with the autumnal season by opting for burnt oranges and flaming reds, or, you can create something that you will love all year round by using pastel shades that never go out of style such as greens, yellows or even pinks.
4. Step into colour
Wreaths aren’t just for Christmas and there are some beautiful faux designs that can be hung on your door all year round – take a look on Etsy, notonthehighstreet and Wayfair.
Okay, so it’s not quite interior colour, but let’s face it, the exterior matters too. A colourful front door is perfect for those that dare to be different and want to stand out from other houses on the street.
Trust us, being greeted by colour in front of you, will soon leave you forgetting the drab weather behind you.

CELEBRATING THREE CENTURIES OF FORWARD THINKING
I
In 2015, Hunters reached its Tercentenary. We think we are the fifth oldest surviving firm of solicitors in the country and we are proud of our history. The firm that would evolve into Hunters opened its doors in 1715, the year that London experienced its last full solar eclipse for 900 years. The firm advised numerous clients on their investments in the South Sea Company, immortalised by the phrase “South Sea Bubble” to describe the vertiginous rise in its value and even more dramatic collapse in 1720. Our records confirm numerous meeting with the company, but not precise details. Since 1799 we have been based in Lincoln’s Inn, specifically New Square, which has sheltered lawyers since 1234, when Henry III forbade legal institutes to be within the City walls (in those days Lincoln’s Inn was well outside). New Square, as its name hints, is less ancient, being built in 1699, and was part of the building boom that saw London expand to the West after the Great Fire of London in 1666. Behaviour was not always very lawyerly, and Serle’s Coffee House, at No 3, was one of the rowdiest, the risk of injury or theft presumably being balanced by the immediate availability legal assistance to do something about it. The Meux brewery dynasty was a long-term client which, in 1814, was implicated in the Great Beer Flood of October of that year. A 22-foot vat of porter in the Horse Shoe Brewery of St Giles burst, taking (apparently) another 8000 barrels with it, flooding the neighbouring habitations, killing eight – all women and children – and injuring many more. In the litigation which followed, the brewery was exonerated, the deaths being the result of “misfortune”. In 1915 the firm, by now in its present offices at No 9 New Square, was bombed by German Zeppelins, and in 1922 it was the object of HG Wells’s parody in his best known novel “The Time Machine” where the firm “Punter and Payne” was a play on our name at that time: “Hunter and Haynes”. We acted for the Duke of Windsor after his abdication in 1936 until dropped like a stone when the partner concerned was unable to answer his summons to meet him off the Paris boat train at Victoria on account of another client

commitment. One did not get a second chance! We acted for Evelyn Waugh in his divorce from his first wife Eveleyn Gardner (they were known to their friends as He-Evelyn and She-Eveleyn) in 1930. But while it is fun to dip into our history, we are proud to have acted for some families and estates for generations, our emphasis is to provide a service relevant for the sophisticated, cosmopolitan, client of today. The firm has grown significantly in size in the last twenty years, and we can address personal legal needs, so long as they remain the right side of the law (we do not ourselves deal with criminal matters, although can point people in the right direction, and from time to time have been called on to do so!). Therefore, half of the firm is devoted to wealth management for high net worth individuals (domiciled and nondomiciled) in the widest sense, and in that context we deal with trusts, and wills and all related tax issues. We have a significant Family team dealing with divorce and relationship breakdown, who are used to dealing with UHNW clients. Prenuptial agreements are a common feature of their work. Our Property department can buy or sell your house in London or in the country and our Art team can provide expertise on legal aspects for art dealing and security. Our Charity and Employment departments also give dedicated advice in their specialist areas as well. This gives a snapshot of what we do. If you thought that we might be able to help you, please do not hesitate to call. We charge nothing for initial telephone discussions, and up to an hour of most first meetings are free as well; we know that faces have to fit. We have been the trusted advisor to our clients for over three hundred years, and want to continue doing so into the future.

HOW WELL DO YOU SPEAK DIGITAL? It’s no secret that our world is changing at a rapid rate. We are now living in an era full of amazing digital experiences that are transforming the way we go about our daily lives. For some, the impact of this new digital world is frightening, for others it’s exciting and for some, it’s just plain confusing.
U
Understanding the world of digital marketing is like learning a new language. It’s complex and constantly evolving. But whilst learning a new language is fun and exciting, it can quickly become a necessity when you find yourself in a foreign territory. Being unable to understand what those around you are talking can be isolating and unnerving; and it’s no different for business’ owners working with digital marketers. But don’t worry, here at Champions Digital we have a user-friendly team who are all ‘mother tongue’ speakers in this world. By helping you to make sense of all the digital ‘jargon’, we can guide you from these early learning slopes right through to mastering the language.
significantly grow your business beyond four walls. It’s like having a global shop window where people can see what you have to offer anytime, anywhere.
Social Media Marketing The practice of social media marketing is about more than just ‘likes’ and ‘shares’. It’s about promoting your brand on popular platforms to increase brand awareness, drive people to your website and generate valuable leads. Today, 83% of adults are spending time on the likes of Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat. So unsurprisingly, it’s a great way to interact with customers and advertise your products around the world.
So, for the first step let’s ask, how well do you speak digital?
Email Marketing
The Awkward Beginner
Often used to promote recent articles, discounts and upcoming events, email marketing is the practice of sending emails directly to your customers. By sending out personalised emails (eShots), you can improve the way you communicate with customers and continue to build a great relationship.
Stage one- the awkward beginner. You’ve heard that the future is digital but you’ve just about sussed using emails on your phone and discovered that Facebook is ‘a thing’. Now is the time to learn the basics that will get you through the initial stages of introducing your businesses into a digital world.
Web Design & Development Websites are arguably your most valuable marketing tool. They essentially act as a central hub for your business; a place where all your marketing efforts point towards. They allow you to showcase your brand identity, sell products, supply contact information and increase consumer trust. If designed and developed professionally, a website can
Online PR
PPC
Much like traditional PR, online PR is about secure online coverage with digital publications and other content-based websites. Today, millions of people are spending time reading online, so ensuring your brand is spoken about both on and offline is essential.
As another way of getting people to your website, pay-perclick advertising is a great way to gain instant results. By using text or image-based adverts, you can send people to your website and only pay when they actually click on your ad.
The Improving Intermediate
Typically, these ads appear at the top of search engine results pages but you can also pay for top slots on most social media platforms and third-party websites. You can also target customers who have either visited similar websites or left your website before completing a purchase.
Stage two- the improving intermediate. You understand the basics that help you to get by, but now you want to learn about the key phrases that bring things together and makes everything a lot clearer.
SEO Search Engine Optimisation. The magical, mystical art of getting your website to “rank” higher in search engine results pages. Or, as we know, it’s the practice of helping search engines to better understand your website’s offering and driving people to your website for free. Whilst there are many factors affecting where your website ranks, some of the core ones include: incorporating keywords, producing quality content, providing a good user experience, securing quality links from other websites and improving the overall credibility of your website.
Content Marketing Content marketing is focused on creating and distributing engaging content for your target audience. This can include producing blogs, infographics, white papers, videos and much more. Without quality content, marketing is impossible. Content creation is the driving force behind your whole marketing strategy and plays an important part in improving your SEO efforts, interacting with users and ultimately, driving profitable customer action.
Business Matters
UX Design
The Fully Fluent
Nothing is more frustrating than experiencing a website that is hard to use, whether it be on your desktop, laptop or mobile. User Experience Design is the practice of ensuring that this isn’t the case and instead your website is easy and enjoyable to use.
Stage three- being fully-fluent.
To create the ultimate experience, UX designers consider important factors such as accessibility, page loading speed and the overall page design to ensure user needs are fulfilled in the easiest way possible.
CRO Often aligning with UX design, Conversion Rate Optimisation is the practice of increasing the percentage of people who take a desired action on your website. Whether it be signing up for a newsletter, submitting and enquiry or making a purchase, CRO will maximise the efficiency of your marketing efforts and creating a high-performing website. This could include testing different elements such as your text, choice of colour or images.
Now you are hitting the advanced stages of learning the Digital language. You can converse easily but some of the more difficult words and concepts are holding you back. So here’s what you need to know to move seamlessly from one language to another...
AI Artificial Intelligence is rapidly becoming central to the digital world. The idea of living in a world run by robots and machines is no longer unheard of as we continue to use technology to improve our everyday lives. But don’t panic, the robots are not taking over. Instead, their uses are being gradually shifted across from the secret labs at NASA into the everyday practical world. AI is a fairly generalised terms that encompasses different approaches and technologies that set up to ‘think’ like humans. It’s ultimately about using machines to analyse customer behaviour and create a data-driven approach for making your business more efficient and profitable.
Voice Search & Speech Recognition As one of the latest developments to transform the digital world, voice search and recognition is now very much a hot topic. A prime example is the development of personal assistants such as Siri, Alexa and Google Home, which are being introduced in homes across the world. With this new technology, we can now search, shop and control elements in our environment all from the comfort of our sofa. As a result, businesses now need to actively optimise their web pages and product listings for voice search to ensure their products can be found at all times.
Talk to The Natives - Champions Digital We admit the digital ecosystem is a complicated one, but once you start to understand the basics and begin to immerse yourself with native speakers, you soon become well on your way to mastering this complicated language. At Champions Digital, we recognise not only the difficulty of understanding Digital, but the power and the potential it has for many businesses. As native speakers, we understand the many layers to the digital ecosystem and take our clients on a journey that, not only helps to build their business, but also improves their ability to speak digital.
So what are you waiting for? Whether you’re eager to learn the basics or looking to take the step to total transformation, our team of digital experts are here to take you from beginner to bilingual. ARTURIUS PARTNER WITH ARMY RUGBY UNION Leadership. Resilience. Mental strength. Traits all vital to the British Armed Forces and to the sport of rugby. The Army Rugby Union (ARU) was established over 100 years ago to provide a place for British Army servicemen and women, as well as members of local communities, to play in rugby union matches.
N
Arturius, integrators of bespoke defence and security solutions, have partnered with the ARU in an exciting three-year deal. A discreet, multidisciplined company delivering new thinking to counter dynamic security threats, Arturius provides answers to problems faced by governments, oil and gas operators and commercial clients, enabling them to operate safely and securely. To celebrate the partnership, a special launch event was held in October at the home of English rugby, Twickenham. The event marked the unveiling of a three-year deal that aims not only to further raise the profile of the ARU and its teams, but also to grow the game’s global reach through a series of initiatives with Arturius’ international partners. Members of the press met delegations from both Arturius and the ARU for a Q&A and pitch-side photocall at the stadium, the site of the annual Army versus Navy showdown, said to be the biggest amateur match on the global rugby union calendar.
112 //
Arturius’ core philosophies align perfectly with the ARU and many of Arturius’ team members are former military personnel, making the link between the two organisations particularly apt. CEO, Stuart Ball, discussed the partnership. “The ARU and its teams sit at the very pinnacle of amateur rugby union. They demonstrate time after time what can be achieved when we stick to our principles. Like them, Arturius believes in the power of collective endeavour. We believe in building teams that are greater than the sum of their parts and in going above and beyond to deliver what is required. So, this partnership is a wonderful fit for us and will act as a great vehicle for us to take rugby, and the principles that underpin it, to the world. In doing so, we’ll be giving ARU players a range of opportunities and working to further the development of each of the teams, like the 7s, the under 23s and, of course, the women’s side.”

Specialist legal advice for every stage of your business and personal life
Legally, what can I do when when my company’s data has been stolen? Delivery up Order
T
he Centre for Strategic and International Studies has calculated that cybercrime costs the global economy as much as £600bn a year with the Cabinet Office reporting the cost to UK business alone totaling £41bn in 2018. The majority of businesses operating today have to operate online effectively to survive, yet alone prosper. Customers and employees alike demand constant connectivity with the “Internet of Things” (machine-to-machine communication via sensors which operate and leverage data from cloud storage) being just the tip of the iceberg. Evidently, the sheer volume of data is increasing with more data being created in the last two years than in the entire history of the human race. By 2020, a third of all data will be stored in the cloud with an estimated 26 billion connected devices worldwide. There is no doubt that technology in the next 5 years will develop at an unprecedented rate which will pose many complex security issues and challenges for businesses. Whilst from a strategic standpoint businesses will (to varying degrees) adapt with these technological changes, they must not forget to take the simple steps to ensure they are protecting their confidential data and doing what they can, from a legal perspective, if confidential data is stolen.
Your biggest threat is still...your employees
A Cisco survey of more than 1,000 UK employees showed that whilst 61% of respondents thought their company had a security policy that 48% claimed they weren’t concerned about it as it didn’t affect them. Alarmingly 39% said
they thought it was their employer’s responsibility to protect data and not theirs. Whilst businesses cannot protect against all developing external threats, many (if not the majority) of businesses are not doing all that they can to protect themselves from internal ones. Staff awareness and training is an essential component in reducing accidental data breaches but on a more fundamental level, businesses need to ensure their own house is in order and protected from deliberate internal breaches before considering the external threats. A study conducted by the Ponemon Institute in the US found that 59% of employees who either quit or are asked to leave take confidential or sensitive business information upon their departure.
Protect what your business can control
A company’s confidential data is, in most cases, one of its most valuable assets with customer databases, trademarks, patents and trade secrets giving a company a competitive edge in their market. Simple steps like ensuring that employment contracts clearly define what the company’s confidential data is, or ensuring that contracts with suppliers clearly define and manage the movement of confidential data (be it collaborative or otherwise) as it is passed down the supply chain, are often overlooked. In addition to employment contracts, companies should have in place and review regularly, polices on the use of mobile devices, social media and a data theft policy which sets out what steps employees should take if confidential data has been stolen (or lost).
A Delivery Up Order is a type of injunction which forces the Defendant to immediately give back all stolen information (including hard copy confidential information and often copies of computers and other electronic devices). If such an Order is not complied with individuals can be held in contempt of Court, be fined or sent to jail. Freeths have experience in both obtaining Delivery Up Orders and contempt of Court proceedings and Some pertinent questions that all have successfully obtained custodial sentences against individual not businesses should be able to answer: complying with a Search/Delivery Up • What IT security systems have you Order. got in place to prevent data theft? • What measures are in place to prevent Freezing Orders In instances where there is a risk of the data theft by employees? • Are there any easy ways to detect a individual dissipating their assets in the face of a legal claim, we can help data theft? you to ensure that these assets (bank • Do your employment contracts contain accounts, properties, shares, etc.) are a sufficient definition of confidential frozen. This helps guarantee that any information and restrictive covenants damages awarded by the Court will be which are relevant to your business? recoverable once the legal proceedings • Does your company have a handbook have concluded. which contains policies dealing with the use of social media? If you have any questions on • Are employees aware of, and the contents of this article, or regularly reminded of, their duties of the legal remedies available to confidentiality?
What options do I have legally if confidential data has been stolen?
your company, please do not hesitate to contact:
If confidential data has been stolen by an employee (or ex-employee), there are a range of legal remedies which can be sought to discover not only the extent of the theft but to assist with the recovery of the information (and your legal costs).
Search Orders
A Search Order is a form of injunction which we can obtain on your behalf which allows us to enter and conduct a search of the individual’s premises (this can be a business and /or a home address). The Search Order will allow us to seize any relevant evidence. Due to their draconian nature, obtaining a Search Order can be difficult to obtain from the Court but Freeths have extensive experience in obtaining Search Orders and ensuring a successful outcome if such is required.

ON TOP OF THEIR GAME

British cycling is one of our nation’s success stories. Be it road racing through France or racing against the clock at the velodrome, the sport has enjoyed huge international success due to cycling stars and sport ambassadors such as Sir Chris Hoy, Sir Bradley Wiggins, Victoria Pendleton CBE and more recently Jason Kenny CBE, Laura Kenny CBE and Philip Hindes MBE.
B
British bikes built for British success It has also become a favourite pastime for many ordinary Brits who have become hooked on all sorts of riding, whether for sport, recreation or transport. Many will find their next bike on the high street, but for those looking for something a little different they’re increasingly turning to a small number of British brands driving the revival of bicycle manufacture in the UK.
Shand and Trillion Enter British industrialist and entrepreneur Sanjeev Gupta. Founder and owner of the global metals and industrial business Liberty, he saw an opportunity to revive the once prominent British bicycle manufacturing industry with the acquisition of both Shand and Trillion Cycles. Both brands had been making inroads within the mountain and adventure touring bike markets and Sanjeev sought to build on their ‘Made in Britain’ heritage with investment and engineering expertise from the automotive and aerospace part of his group. He also has a very personal connection to the cycling industry having grown up around his father’s bicycle manufacturing business.
Shand Cycles Originally established in 2003 by Steven Shand and now part of the Liberty Cycles Division, the company comprises of a team of eight specialists dedicated to making the worlds’

finest adventure touring bikes from its headquarters in central Scotland. Each bike is built-to-order with every part of the process carried out in-house, with carefully chosen steel tubing, skillfully fabricated into a frame and then painted in the colour and graphics of the customers’ choice. The frame is assembled into a full bike before careful packing and dispatch to customers in the UK and around the world. “It’s hard to put any particular label on our bikes, but more than anything they are inspired by the Scottish landscape” says Steven Shand. “We sometimes take it for granted, but we’re fortunate to have free access to tracks and paths across Scotland and I think that has influenced the design of our bikes greatly.” With twelve different models including road, touring, gravel, MTB and expedition bikes, Shand has a bike to satisfy every For more information visit: www.shandcycles.com
We have free access to tracks and paths across Scotland and that’s influenced the design of our bikes greatly.
Trillion Cycles If Shand is all about exploring, the other Liberty made brand Trillion - is all about adrenalin. Its mountain bikes are designed to shred the trails and put a real smile on the riders’ face. Built with the same attention to detail as Shand, Trillion hardtails are characterized by their long, slack geometry making them ideal for steep, technical trails and the growth in gravity events such as Enduro. The Trillion lineup consists of the Prime, featuring a 160mm travel suspension fork that pushed the limits of what a hardtail mountain bike is capable of, and is supported by its slightly more conservative sibling, the Shug, with 130mm of suspension travel. Both bikes have a number of innovative features such as integrated cable routing for dropper seat posts and an adjustable rear axle (on the Prime) to adjust handling, allowing for different diameter wheel sizes to be fitted (29” or 27.5”). All bikes are built to order and are available as frame only, standard component or custom component build. Frames are available in 14 different colour options and available to order direct from the Trillion website.
Good for the sport and the wider community where bikes and Liberty are concerned, British manufacturing has other benefits too. It is not only about the high-end designs, finish and a delighted customer. It is also about supporting and growing manufacturing to benefit local communities. This is why the two bike brands, working under the GFG Alliance, sponsored and participated in the 66-mile Loch Ness Etape cycle sportive. The GFG Alliance is one of Scotland’s biggest industrial investors, having committed around £500m in recent years to acquire and develop various metals and industrial assets across the country, and was therefore keen to support this high profile cycling event. The GFG Alliance also partnered with the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup at Fort William in Scotland after Sanjeev Gupta acquired industrial and property assets in 2016, including the estate on which the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup runs. This is a perfect event and venue for both brands to showcase their capabilities.

SUPPORTING THE NEXT GENERATION OF FLYERS The Royal Air Forces Association is committed to supporting the RAF family, present and future. Now, helping to nurture the next generation of flyers, the charity is giving 16-19-year olds the opportunity to learn to fly, through its 2019 scholarship programme.
T
The flying scholarship programme has been running successfully for more than 11 years, and this year there are 12 exciting scholarship places available. One successful applicant will receive 35 hours of flight training in a light aircraft, and, depending on the rate of progress, the course could result in a Light Aircraft Pilot Licence. The 11 other selected candidates will each receive 12 hours’ training. Applications are open to members of the RAF Air Cadets, which includes the Air Training Corps (ATC) and the Combined Cadet Force (RAF), the Girls Venture Corps Air Cadets (GVCAC) and the Air Scouts/Air Explorer Scouts. They must also have served at least 12 months with the RAF Air Cadets, GVCAC or Air (Explorer) Scouts on 1 June 2019. The scholarship selection process is designed to take applicants on a learning experience to help equip them for other types of selection in their future careers.
Aptitude Testing Shortlisted applicants will be invited to RAF Cranwell in Lincolnshire, where an interview and aptitude test will be carried out before learning if they have been successful. Winners will be presented with their scholarships at the charity’s Annual Conference in May, and the flying lessons will take place in the summer of 2019 at South Warwickshire Flying School. The scholars will be provided with overnight accommodation while engaging in the programme. Three of the scholarships are being sponsored by MBDA, a multi-national company that designs and produces missiles for all three armed forces, and one of them by the Aviation Focus Group, which promotes the exchange of aviation information, and encourages young people interested in the industry. The RAF Association is funding the rest. Applicants must be aged 16 on 1 January 2019 and under 20 on 1 June 2019. The application form, along with full terms and conditions, can be downloaded from www.rafa.org.uk/flying-scholarships. The closing date for applications is 31 January 2019.
Some of last year’s winners, proudly accompanied by their parents, are pictured receiving their scholarship certificates from the President of the RAF Association, Air Marshal Sir Baz North.

He had not played this form of cricket before but after two weeks of training with Bexley coach Dom Taylor, both his skills and self-confidence quickly improved. Sam is always trying to find ways to improve his game despite the restrictions his disabilities impose on him. He began playing from his powered chair but found that playing on his knees improved his game and he also discovered that with only 2 fingers on his hand, using a smaller bat gave him more control.
WANT TO GET INVOLVED? If you’ve been inspired by Sam’s story and would like to support the charity on its mission to give disadvantaged and disabled young people a sporting chance, there are many ways for you to get involved. Whether its volunteering, making us a beneficiary charity of your event or attending one of our fundraising dinners, any support will make a massive difference. Please visit www.lordstaverners.org to find out more.
Sam demonstrated his commitment to Bexley when he continued to attend his team sessions to learn and support, even when he was injured. The whole team respects Sam and his infectious confidence settles down what can be an excitable team before any training session or competition. All of this resulted in Sam being named captain for the 2016 Disability Cricket Finals, where he also won the Most Improved Player Award, and representing the Kent Learning and Physically Disabled team in the ECB Super 9s competition. “I never thought I would be able to play cricket with my disability. When I became a wheelchair user, I thought it was game over, that I wouldn’t be able to play sport again. I didn’t know what to do, but luckily I was introduced to cricket and it has allowed me to experience all the excitement and happiness that sport gives me.”
