A SANCTUARY 2019 Lyceum Competition - Naturalization Ceremony Space Angel Island, San Francisco CA
Design V: Integrative - Fall 2018 Design V: Integrative studios participated in the 2019 Lyceum competition in the design of “A Sanctuary” - a facility that would serve as a space to both welcome immigrants as citizens of the United States and allow reflection for past immigrants and communities at the former immigration center at China Cove. The sanctuary is sited at the original foundations of the administration building that processed Asian immigrants entering the U.S. during the early 1900’s. The design floats above the slab as a respectful physical interaction with the site, yet encourages occupation of the most historically and emotionally charged part of China Cove by recreating the daunting ferry-approach immigrants would have experienced. This new depth of engagement creates an opportunity to reclaim the foundations for the immigrants and new citizens of America today. These ideas are accomplished through a powerful three-part scheme of a wall, bar, and tunnel. These elements break down the oppressive administrative facade, educate and celebrate immigrant history, sacrifices, and contributions, and create a winding, reflective journey - culminating in an observatory of the island’s other historic facilities and the promises of a better future in the San Francisco skyline.

TRELLIS FARM STAND Agua Dulce Urban Farm, Austin TX
Design II: Foundations - Spring 2017 As a final project, Design II: Foundations was tasked with designing a small farm stand for Agua Dulce, an urban farm located in Southeast Austin. The farm stand acts as the facilitator of sustainable and communal relationships between the public and farm by serving as a welcome, commerce, educational, and event space. Formally, the farm stand is comprised of two interlocking pieces; the dual shading and storage trellis system and the solid wrap. These trellis structures would eventualy accept the growth of vines, creating a dappled light for a beautiful, cool, and shady market experience. This solar-conscious system then carves into the landscape to create an intimate gathering space that fans out to accommodate larger events, not only accepting life on the small scale of plants but the larger scale of human gatherings.

LAYERED KINDERGARTEN Manor and Poquito, Austin, TX
Design III: Intermediate - Fall 2017 Using the logic of a layered system of mass and void from a precedent study, this project demonstrates the iterative potential in the design of a Kindergarten located in East Austin at Manor and Poquito. This design explores an organizational framework of layering derived from the notion of sight lines, density, and the nature of public and private interaction. This organization is implemented on a large scale through the kindergarten layout and on a small scale in each programmatic space. For example, the framework incasing the publicly accessible program is spaced further apart to allow more transparency, whereas the framework of the private program is spaced more closely together for privacy. Within a program, such as a classroom, the framework is spaced further apart near the teacher’s desk for visibility and security, and becomes closer together in the student-occupied spaces of the classroom to prevent distractions while still letting in natural light. While in the maze of my precedent study layers are used to isolate people, this kindergarten uses layering as a programmatic intersection of the public community and private Kindergarten.

FOREST SACRED SPACE Mission Espada, San Antonio TX
Design IV: Speculative - Spring 2018 The Design IV: Speculative Studio focused on sacred spaces with an emphasis on hand drawing/ craft. The precedent study of Steven Holl’s Chapel of St. Ignatius explores the relationship between light, color, and procession. These ideas of how different lighting conditions inform the ethereal character of a space manifest itself in the following meditation space study. The meditation space explores diffused lighting conditions in spaces with movement as circumambulatory meditation, and direct, distinct lighting conditions with stationary spaces. These studies culminate in the design of a forested sacred space located at Mission Espada, the oldest of the San Antonio missions. The sacred space is located towards the back of the site, bridging the wall that historically divided the safety found within the mission from the untamed wilderness. The sacred space itself embodies this ambiguity through a blur between the indoors and outdoors and a combination of natural, hillside meditation spaces and landscaped terrace meditation. Altogether, these ideas of descension, connection to nature, and the diffused lighting condition of a tree canopy create a sacred space distinct from its mission site but respectful to its surroundings and the many modes of worship/ meditation that can be engaged there.

VISUAL COMMUNICATIONS Fall 2016 - Fall 2018 Visual Communications I focuses on the fundamentals of hand drawing/crafting primarily through composition and technique. These skills range from observational drawing, figure-ground compostions, perspectives, tone drawing, technical drawings, and woodjoints. Visual Communications II begins to combindes the skills of hand drawing/craft, technique, and composition of Visual Communications I with digital fabrication and design methods. The personal focus of my semester was Advanced Drawing and Advanced Rhino, as demonstrated through the sophisticated representation of the “object through both digital and analog means. Visual Communications III is a full immersion in advanced digital fabrication and design. Digital desgin is emphasized through the representation explorations of Revit and Rhino + Grasshopper, while digital fabrication is emphasized through the lasrcut object and installation. The installation utlilizes complex felt shapes suspended above a space in order to absorb sound, making the occupant hypersensitive to the amount of filler noise present in our daily lives that is suddenly deadened in this space.

A LIGHTHOUSE Collaborators: Marion Willenska and Sebastian Acevedo
Stantec: Intern Project - Summer 2018 This community center rennovation project is a pro-bono collaborative design from my fulltime summer internship at Stantec. Some of the primary challenges facing the preexisting facility were lack of identity, wayfinding, natural lighting, and open spaces. Working together with interior design and structural interns, our design transformed the center into a “lighthouse for the community. Through the combination of the exterior screens, the new vertical core/extension, and dappled light, the lighthouse concept became a literal and symbolic beacon for community, clarity in circulation and program, and lastly better lighting throughout the spaces. This design not only effectively addresses the issues faced by the client, but does so in an economical way that allows our design to more likely be realized.
42
CONCEPT - Screens The perforated metal screens are an extension of the lighthouse concept in the way they filter light, create new engaging spaces, foster identity, and allow the existing building to be appreciated through a new lens. This is accomplished through the use of the screen as a branding opportunity by abstracting the community center’s logo to create the perforation pattern. The screens are placed with the same modularity found in the existing building’s structural system, giving them a sense of belonging. The screens are also made of corten steel, allowing the material to patina and change alongside its community. Lastly, the light passing through the new addition makes the center an unmissible beacon, both day and night.
