Entropy in a closed physical system never decreases. ——Second Law of Thermodynamics
Simple laws like this define the universe. They make our present world fascinating and make the future unpredictable. There are lots of efforts to challenge this law: lots of efforts to create an eternal Utopian world. Unsurprisingly, none of them succeeded.
As a student of urban planning, I am trained to deal with the giant creature named “city” by keeping my eyes open: focusing on the present and focusing on the future. That has a significant influence on my architectural design. Instead of confronting entropy with a Utopian thought, I choose to embrace this law of nature and to let it help me with my design. In my portfolio, I will show my efforts of fighting against utopia by focusing on reality and leaving space for uncertainty, including varies of design: architectural, urban, and graphics. There will be no definition, no stipulation, and no destination. There will be accidents, incidents, and freedom. I will not change the world; I will guide the world evolve to a more exciting direction.
Princeton University is a place I am always longing for, the frontier and holy land of contemporary architecture. Greatest figures like Michael Young,Jennifer Leung,Guy Nordenson, Elizabeth Diller or Stan Allen all left their significant mark in Princeton. Furthermore, Princeton is famous for its diversity and eclectic, which fascinate me the most. It will be the optimum choice if I want to maximize my creativity.
Beijing is the greatest city on this planet. However, it is a malformed city: it is a capital city. A city is a combination of lives. A capital city is a background of governments. It is a place of supreme order; it has to have clear blue sky whenever an international event is held, it has to close shut down every bar at night whenever a national meeting takes place. There is no doubt that there is still not enough order in this magnificent capital. There is too much life going on here, and the life is destroying the environment with all the billboards, pedlars, and spontaneous buildings. These disharmonious elements are not welcomed in the capital of China. There should be order, and order only. With combined efforts, Beijing will undoubtedly become a pure and ideal city. Everything in this city will look just like what it is designed to be.
BEIJING ENTROPY Personal Work Aug 2017
Beijing is the Ideal City.
After years of effort, Beijing successfully managed to remove all the undesigned element in Beijing in 2049 and made Beijing what it supposed to be: pure architectures and streets just as designed and planned, an ideal city with no chaos. Slogans, sculptures, billboards, shop signs, gardens, posters, bicycles, sheds, tubes, fences, logos, vendors, beggars, they used to define the city as much as architectures do, now expelled outside the wall of Beijing. Without an architecture or a city to attach to, chaos became the architecture itself, an architecture made up of architecture’s enemies. Chaos is strong, stronger than all architects and urban planners combined. They can be expelled for now, but never be truely defeated. It’s law of nature. It’s law of arcitecture.
Welcome to Beijing.
More utopian the city is, more fragile it will become. Now the chaos has taken back the city which abandoned them, the city they belonged. Beijing is still the greatest city in the world, but this time it is because it's inclusive and flexible. It's ready for everything. Welcome to Beijing.

Farmers in western Sichuan live in a particular kind of settlement: Linpan. Diameter varies from 50 to 150 meters, Linpan provides the home for 2 to 30 households, covering a farmland area of 0.5 to 5 acre, about ten times smaller than an ordinary village. By living inside Linpan, Farmers can get easy access to the fields.

The site, Jingrong Town, is located in western Pi County, the industrial center of Chengdu. It was mainly Linpans and rivers in 2005, but after Foxconn factory’s construction in 2009, the town expanded dramatically. Just in 10 years time, the population quadrupled, more than 3 million sqm of modern apartments are built. And all the Linpans are removed to make space for further construction.

The new Jingrong Town are now mainly apartments. The northern side is mostly high rises, and the southern side is multiple stories apartments.
SITE
The project is based on Linpans on this site. By keeping Linpan in two different ways: positive and negative, a public web is developed by Linpans and riverside footpaths. All the negative Linpan also called innovative Linpan, are center of innovative companies.
As China Changing its course of development, more and more emphasize have been placed on innovation and entrepreneurship. In 2016, 16million new companies are founded in China, 11.6% more than 2015. The number of company incubators also have a dramatic increase of 47.3%. In 2015, China decided to set up 17 demonstration bases for innovation, and Pi County of Chengdu is one of them.
Innovation would be a new engine of Chinese economy development
The outcome will be marvelous if the majority of Chinese people gain their sense of achievement through challenging and creating.

Shifting perspective is the technique used in Chinese landscape painting. It conceals ancient people's understanding toward space, along with mountains and rivers form some kind of flat features, which is entirely different with the technique of one-point perspective with visual effect used by Western oil painting. Came into sight the rivers and bridges nearby and misty mountain afar, a s p e c i a l co n n e ct i o n th u s is formed between the real space composition inside one painting and the poetic feeling expressed by scholars.
Sacred Way: the spatial sequence of ancient tombs
The sacred way refers to the roads inside the ancient tombs. Those roads connect multiple spatial elements such as tablets, doors, and temples, which comprises the linear sequence amid the tombs, Under most circumstances, this sacred way stretches from the red door to the graves, with the praying temple as its climax in space. Moreover, each division of space is given various functions and unique meanings.

This project targets at further promoting the space elimination in the three-dimensional area, blurring the line between the upper and lower vertical dimension. The skyscrapers usually apply the method of core-tube and standard level, making space rigid and tedium. Therefore, the project is trying to remove the division and integrate the upper and lower space Chinese painting technique of mountain pilling is used to transfer the spatial sequence of ancient tombs into a vertical tomb. Meanwhile, different parts in the sequence are equipped with diverse functions.

There is no easy way from the earth to the stars. Since Thales, the perpetual sky has been luring people from generation to generation. We are always hoping to get closer to the stars and the secret hidden within. In Roccascalegna, ItalyďźŒthe combination of the charm of sky night and the castle makes the beauty even more breathtaking. The Italian Exhibition Group launched the Observatory Houses project aiming to find a new use for Roccascalegna Castle. The project aims at creating in Italy the first and most suggestive observatory houses. They will be a sustainable and exclusive house model aimed to ensure the protection and improvement of such inestimable heritage. The galaxy is often located in the southern sky, which makes it possible to put the castle and the galaxy under one camera frame from the site in the north. To appreciate this view, the only way is to go up higher and higher, breaks away from gravitational attraction and get closer to the stars. Though a higher place, our view can easily get through the hill standing between the observation house and the southern sky.

OBERVATORY VILLA The project concludes five observatory cabins, three observatory apartments, two obser vator y houses, and one observatory villa. Thus, we hope that every observation house can be a tower. While arranging these towers, the church draws our attention. We put all the towers around the church and create a courtyard. The church can speak directly to the towers, while the new castle formed by all these towers is an oblique projection of the old castle.

Traditional Chinese vernacular houses often face a problem of a lack of windows. Translucent roof-tile is typically used to light up the house. However, it is too weak and concentrated to light up the whole room. By plugging in a light improving device made by optical fiber, the entire room can be lightened up in a cheap, flexible way.

Love is full of uncertainty, so can be architecture. We designed a maze by connecting different units with a passage. When lovers enter this architecture, they will never know what story is ahead of them. There are millions of ways to experience by connecting space in different order.

The graphic is often the carrier of meanings. By editing some photos I took in Tsinghua University campus with the simple method of repetition, I demolished the meaning of the original graphics while I have no intention to create a new one. However, even without an intention, new meanings are inevitably produced. But I promise, What you are just looking at are nothing but pixels.

I learned sketching and Chinese calligraphy since I was 8. Orientated from the east and west, these two kinds of art have a lot in common. It’s all about the relationship between empty and full, or yin and yang. Between the fullness, space is created, just like architecture. This training planted an interest in art in my heart and directly leads to my choosing design as my future career.
