Chelmsford Ideas festival 2013

Page 1

Welcome to the Ideas Festival 2013. Our theme this year is Imagine. You are invited to participate in events reflecting the past, present and future of our City. Changing Chelmsford exists to stimulate community creativity and participation. This year, in partnership with the Anglia Ruskin’s community engagement team, we invite you to be really imaginative! Along with numbers of fun and creative events, we also provide lots of opportunities to think creatively about the past, present and future of our City. The festival is growing and this year there will be more than 65 separate events for all ages, including a day focused on Local Food and another on Wellbeing. Along with 7 events for Imaginative Children on their own special centrefold, there are 9 events that offer opportunities to influence the future of our city. There are also 12 sessions that encourage you to explore Chelmsford’s past and examine the changes that have affected the City and its people. These involve a combination of talks plus hands-on activities where you will be able to view the evidence of the lives and work of previous generations.

Along with two key new festival venues; the Chelmsford Library and the Essex Record Office we have 17 individual events scheduled for Anglia Ruskin University. The Wellbing and Local food days bring the total of events at the Ideas Hub to more than 30. Do check our website www.changingchelmsford.org/ IF2013 to see the events that are scheduled at the Ideas Hub after our print date as you can be sure that our events list will keep on growing! This year ChelmsfordCommunityRadio.com will be joining us in the Ideas Hub to broadcast some of our events and interview some of our participants. Come and join our event hosts in sharing ideas through talks and practical activities that together make up the Changing Chelmsford Ideas Festival 2013. Enjoy!

The remaining sessions, are a wide range of cultural activities for you to participate in and enjoy: they are about the Chelmsford of here and now. This year we encourage you to book online to ensure your place at your chosen events. This allows us to plan effectively and to send you an email or text the day before to remind you that your event is coming up. Also it will allow us to notify you of any changes eg if rain changes a walking route. 2

Ideas Hub 1 year on

W

e’re growing way beyond our initial idea of the pop-up venue, café, and meeting place we started in September in advance of the Ideas Festival in October 2012. It’s been a roller coaster ride of highs, lows, and challenges as well as a time of fun and friendships. The reality of being ‘a not for profit’ pop-up community hub has meant moving 3 times. However, thanks to the extraordinary generosity and support of High Chelmer we continue to have a space for the community to meet, connect, share skills, and try out new activities.

O

ur volunteer team has grown from 4 to 20+. These dedicated people give hours of their time freely to help organize and run the growing timetable of events and workshops. In April we hosted more than 25 workshops in the hub.

I

n May we ran a music, performance and creative activities programme- our first major fundraiser that raised over £250. With Makerspace we also hosted Chelmsford’s first Game Jam.

J

une saw the launch of the co-working space – a place for free-lancers and home-workers to drop-in and use the hand built desks, wifi and meeting space in the Wiki House.

J

uly was incredibly busy. For starters we moved back into Hub 1. The team then joined with High Chelmer to offer a pop-up photo booth and art activities at both the 3 Foot People and Fling Festivals. Our Big Gig event showcased local musicians.

14

D

uring August the co-working space hosted CreativeCityLab, initiated by Dellé Odeleye of Anglia Ruskin University, seed funded by Unltd. Both Anglia Ruskin University and Writtle School of Design graduates gained experience as Interns for local businesses and civic partners on trial projects. This would otherwise be very difficult in the current economic climate.

I

n September the Hub transformed into a gallery space to host Art Month - with a week of multisensory exhibition and participatory workshops and talks by local artists and designers as part of the City Council’s Sensation Festival.

E

ach day another person with a wonderful story or idea walks into the Hub. I’m proud to be part of this brave team of creative minds working to make great things happen in Chelmsford. Our aim is to create a sustainable future for the project. This can only happen with support from the local community. So come and say hello at the Hub in Market Square. Enjoy the space, get involved, or relax with a cuppa at the fair trade café.

and what is needed

Community action research provides a means to observe a situation, design a change, study whether that change works, if not tweek it and finally report on what worked. This discussion provides a look at the work of Whynot! an older people’s research group who are making an important contribution to the active involvement of older people. WhyNot! are helping older people to develop research skills through training, undertaking projects, analysis and making recommendations based on their findings. Making spaces speak-

Marconi- Then and Now

Hosted by Annabel Brown, intro by Mark Jagdev Venue Ideas Hub Time 10am-4pm Audience 12+

Hosted by The Marconi Heritage Group Venue Chelmsford Library town square Time 10am -3pm Audience All ages

All human beings are naturally place makers. This workshop aims to harness our innate design skills. We’ll explore possible futures for some of the forgotten spaces of Chelmsford. In teams comprising design professionals and local people we’ll suggest ways these spaces might be adapted to inject life into city neighbourhoods. It builds on the work of The Young Urban Explorers and Changing Chelmsford’s “Animating the Public Realm” investigation.

The Marconi Company fostered a sense of family within its employees which is in danger of being forgotten. This Meet-and-Greet session is part of an initiative to set up a Marconi Heritage Centre in Chelmsford. The aim is to provide a focal point for the housing and display of memorabilia, both personal and operational. Do you have any family or other associations with the company? Come and tell us all about them! Free drop in session, no booking required.
