Future of Lord & Taylor 34 Urban Riverside Renovation 50
City-sharing Complex—Accessible Open Space, Affordable residence and Education in NYC The goal of this project is to reinterpret the existing urban fabric around the site to build a place of “city-sharing,” where housing, school, and various workshops coexist. The site is located on two distinct urban fabrics. The project brings together the qualities of the two contrasting urban fabrics, and creates new qualities of public space. The project conserves the existing block structure through a system of bars typology to provide accessibility on street and central open space. The tower increases density of residence. The building system provide a bridge for activities between the school and housing, education, to satisfy daily lives of people at different ages.

The Future of Lord & Taylor at the Intersection of Work and Living in NYC In a post Covid context, where the future of office space is uncertain, the time is right to examine how the Lord & Taylor Building could become an experiment in new live/work models where the traditional separation of these uses is temporary suspended in order to create new affinities between places of office and residential spaces along with their connection to urban services. The strategy carves out a courtyard at the center of the old building, reducing the floor plates in order to gain light and passive cross ventilation for all spaces, and opening up the opportunity for a new way to configure office and residential space.
