COVER STORY
Lanna heritage 8
enjoy every minute
In the late 13th century, the Kingdom of Lanna covered most of Northern Thailand as we know it today as well as neighbouring parts of Burma, China and Laos. At this period it was bordered by Burma to the West, China to the North, the Khmer Empire of Angkor to the East and Siam (now Thailand) in the South. Having ruled the Lanna kingdom previously from Chiang Saen and then later Chiang Rai, King Mengrai decided to administer Lanna from the banks of the lovely Ping river. Unfortunately, the site was flooded (an area known today as Wiang Khum Kam), King Mengrai prudently decided to move the settlement a few kilometres away. In 1296, Chiang Mai was built to be the capital of the Lanna kingdom, it was founded by King Mengrai in association with two others regional kings : King Ramkhamhaeng of Sukhothai and King Ngam Muang of Phayao. Ringed by high mountains, teak tree forests, well stocked rivers and fertile valleys, Chiang Mai was the main trading town between Southern China and the sea ports of Burma. The region was frequently attacked by its neighbours who tried to claim this prized gem as their own. The Burmese occupied the Lanna region from 1556 to 1774 when the Lanna King, with assistance from Siam, drove the Burmese out. The Lanna Kingdom eventually became part of Siam in 1892 and a province in 1932. In 1949 Siam officially became known as Thailand. The word “Lanna” is made of two words combined: “Lan” meaning a million and “Na” meaning rice fields. Thus, Lanna literally means the land of a million rice fields, a reference to the rich agriculture of the region. The Lanna heritage takes shape all over the city of Chiang Mai in the forms of language, clothing, art, architecture, music, food and more. Though the word Lanna had existed in the distant past, there has been a resurgent cultural pride in the last thirty years and the Lanna culture has become a national treasure. Travelling in the North, you may have noticed that people speak a different language from standard Central Thai; this regional dialect is call Kam Muang or Lanna language. Aside from language, there are many cultural differences that set northerners apart from Central and Southern Thais.
Lanna Cuisine :
Culinary treats are one of these cultural difference that await visitors to Chiang Mai. To begin with, northern cooking uses a larger variety of vegetables than other regional Thai cuisines. Cooks also favour the use of culinary herbs with a bitter flavour. Recommended dishes include tasty Sai Oua Sausage, made with dried chillies, garlic, shallots, lemon grass, pork and kaffir lime peel. Also there are three famous chilli pastes known as Nam Phrik Num, a mix of young fresh green chillies with roasted eggplant; Nam Phrik Ong, made of dried red chillies, ground pork, tomatoes, lemongrass and other herbs and Nam Phrik Nam Puu, with small field crabs cooked in water and mixed with shallots, garlic and dried chillies. These chilli pastes can be eaten with Khao Niaow, the traditional Lanna style sticky rice. Other delicious specialities include Kaeng Hang Lae, a rich Burmese-influenced ginger and pork curry and Khao Soy, Burmese style curry soup with egg-noodles, served in a bowl with chicken or beef, lime, shallots, pickled cabbage and red chilli paste. Eating Khao Soy is one of the must-do’s for those wishing to enjoy tasty Lanna treats.
Lanna architecture :
Another characteristic of Lanna that people notice immediately is the volume of artistry the culture is infused with. The Lanna house, or Ruen Kalare, is similar to the Central Thai house in that it is constructed from teak wood and built elevated from the ground to protect from flooding. As it was expensive, only wealthy families could own this kind of house. Farmers would live in much less sophisticated houses or huts.
9
Lanna heritage
10
What makes the Lanna house distinguishable from other region’s houses is the two V shaped, hand carved Kalare at the top of the roof, from which the house takes its name. There are different beliefs as to the purpose of the Kalare: some believe it represents a pair of birds perched on the roof which would scare away crows. Other believe that, during the Burmese occupation, Thai people were forced to have Kalare on the top of their house to distinguish them from Burmese. Typically the Lanna house is simple and practical; it consists of two rectangular rooms on the first floor, separated by a veranda. The kitchen is also separated from these two rooms. This kind of house totally permeates the landscape. You are welcome to visit the Lanna House Museum of Chiang Mai University which presents a collection of buildings consisting of 9 houses and 3 old granaries in typical Lanna architecture. The Center for the Promotion of Arts and Culture, Open Monday to Friday - 239 Huay Kaew Road. Chiang Mai.
Lanna Dance :
There are two kinds of Lanna dance. One style was created by the court during the time of Princess Dararasami, such as the dances Fonh Leb (using long finger-nails), Fonh Tien (the candle dance) or Fonh Ngiew or Fonh Sao Mai (the silk dance). The second kind of dance was performed by villagers, mostly for local traditional festivals and rituals. This kind includes Fonh Cheung (the fighting dance), Fonh Dab (the sword dance) and Fonh Phi Mod-Phi Meng (performed when worshipping ancestors).
Lanna Temples :
Northern Thai temples are characterized by a simple, yet striking contrast of whitewashed plaster set against dark teakwood beams. The interiors feature red lacquered columns decorated with gold leaf stencilled patterns and mural paintings illustrating stories from the Buddha’s life. Lanna murals, which represent another important part of the area’s artistic heritage, are full of colorful, vibrant scenes depicting local people and everyday life. The influence of Burmese, Shan, Lao and Thai Lue culture is clearly seen in Lanna art and architecture from the 19th century onwards. Phra Singh temple in Chiang Mai (see City Map E4) and Wat Phrathat Lampang Luang (in Lampang) are two perfect examples of the Lanna temple architecture.
Lanna Textiles :
Textiles reflect the identity unique to each community and are an important record of the lifestyle of the villagers, based on superstitions, traditions, religion and culture. Ancient murals on temple walls such as those found in the viharn Lai Kham at Wat Phra Singh and the viharn at Wat Buak Khrok Luang in Chiang Mai serve as an historical record of local dress traditions and the evolution of textile weaving along with patterns unique to Lanna textiles. In former times, weaving was an integral part of community life in the Lanna Kingdom, especially amongst women. Looms and other weaving equipment could be found in almost every household. Natural products readily found locally were used and weaving required skilled hands. Equipment was simple and techniques were very basic. The most common fibre used in weaving was cotton, especially locally grown cotton which produces light brown tufts. In the old times, silk was used only by high ranking dignitaries and known as Pha Sin. Lanna textiles were woven for a variety of purposes with the type and shape dependent on the intended use. Generally, they can be divided into two types. The first type includes tube skirts woven for daily use which were not so finely detailed and were used for home wear or for working in the fields. These were usually made of cotton and had little design or were plain black or navy blue like the Mo Horm skirts which are well known in the north. The other type includes textiles woven for special purposes such as those used or worn in merit making ceremonies, celebrations and major festivals or for use in various rituals such as banners known colloquially as tung.
Lanna New Year :
Songkran, which takes place in mid-April (April 13-15, 2013), marks the official start of the Thai New Year. It is celebrated throughout the country but perhaps nowhere with quite as much enthusiasm as in Chiang Mai. The Lanna New Year is different from the Central Thai Songkran in many ways, be it the activities, beliefs or purposes. Lanna Pi Mai (new year) comprises a 7-day period : Wan Sangkhanlong, Wan Nao, Wan Phayawan, Wan Pakpi, Wan Pakduen and Wan Pakyam. The three main days, April 13, 14, 15 are most important : April 13th being Wan Sangkhalong is the day marking the end of the old year; April 14th, called Wan Nao, is the first day of the new year and April 15th is Wan Phayawan, the day marking a new era. In addition to splashing water in every street it is also a time for visiting relatives, paying respect to elders and bathing Buddha images with scented water. The water theme continues with the dousing of friends, family and complete strangers with copious amounts of water in an atmosphere of fun and meritment unlike anywhere else. Street markets, food stalls, lively processions and performances add to the festive atmosphere of this special holiday. Two ceremonies are very special to Chiang Mai and the Lanna culture. The first one is the Mai Kham Bho Procession: centered on the Bho tree. This festival is associated with Buddhism and temples. Bho trees are surrounded by wooden supports called Mai Kham Bho and these supports are placed around the trees in temples. Mai Kham Bho processions usually fall on the same days of April as Songkran. According to local beliefs, the act of placing support around trees brings good luck and prosperity to devotees. The other important custom is to build sand pagodas in the temples. Villagers will come in their best clothes with candles, joss sticks, flowers, ceremonial flags and handfuls of sand. They will start making sand pagodas and sprinkle them with scented water. This tradition comes from the belief that this is a compensation for the dirt they have carried away on feet during the year. Sand brought by people is put on piles which are decorated with colourful flags. On April 15th, images of Buddha from all monasteries are paraded through the streets of Chiang Mai. People standing along streets ritually “bath” the statues by tossing water at them. (see detailed schedule of Singkran 2013 on page 57).
The Lanna culture is a colorful combination of various elements brought together from both historic and multi-ethnic contexts. If you would like to discover more about it, the newly opened Lanna Folklife Museum is the most complete place to see it all. The museum showcases more than 10 rooms dedicated to Lanna culture and recounts the rich culture and history of Northern Thailand. Set in the former district court building, right opposite the Three Kings Monument, the neoclassical structure houses waxworks, textiles, religious sculptures, wooden decorative ornaments and tools. hooooah!... it’s Songkran time again! Is there anything more entertaining than playing with water at the hottest period of the year?
Songkran, regarded as Thai traditional new year has been an exotic Thai tradition for generations. Across the country, it is time for laughter and entertainment, for religious ceremonies and merit-making, for familly and friends... and of course, splashing water, lots of it! Known the world-over for its characteristic tradition of water-throwing, ranging from courteous sprinkle to harmless water pistols, Songkran is a refreshing solution to “beating the heart” during the hottest season of the year. Despite the fun of these three days of soaked and harmless battlefields (April 13-15) Songkran is not just a splashing festival; religious ceremonies and rituals are celebrated at major temples such as Wat Phrasing and Wat Chedi Luang (see detailed schedule page 57).
After celebrating Songkran the traditional way, don’t miss the great fun of water splashing in Chiang Mai’s famous locations: Nawarat Bridge, Thapae Gate, around the moat and in front of Central-Kad Suan Kaew. Whether with a silver bowl or a scoop of water, this amazing festival is unique. It will last for three days but don’t forget that the day will be over only when the sun touches the horizon and the visibility is too poor to play. So get ready, and have fun!

TRAVEL TALK
BOONYOK PHONGSOONTHORN
General Manager of Maninarakorn Hotel and Vice President of The Association of Northern Tourism Federation
Wat Pra Prabat Si
Loy
Wat Pra Prabat Si Loy
What is your top destination in Chiang Mai?
How often do you get away?
Well, there are many. But I would choose the Wat Pra Prabat Si Loy in Mae Rim. It is away from the usual touristic destinations, yet only 45 km. from Chiang Mai and on the way to Mae Taeng Elephant Camps. The temple of the Four Buddha Footprints, or Wat Pra Prabat Si Roy in Thai, is a remote and spectacular forest temple. The road through the valley to get there is just incredibly beautiful. The temple is fairly recent but the four Buddha footprints are old and there is a collection of hundreds of Buddha statues. A belief says that you can make any wish in this temple and it will be fulfilled.
Almost every week end. I come from Bangkok and moved to Chiang Mai about five years ago. I have totally fallen in love with the north of Thailand and find new places to discover almost every week. For me, it is also very important to travel in the countryside: when you spend too much time in the city you forget about the simple things that make life so special.
Another favourite destination?
Another of my favourite destination is Baan Phor Liang Meun’s Botanical Garden, on the outskirts of Lamphun, about an hour drive from Chiang Mai. It is a wonderful terracotta and botanical garden. On more than 100 acres, the nicely built brick buildings remind me of the Haripunchai architecture and Angkor Wat. The garden also houses a Thai medicinal plant garden with thousands of species from all around the world. Baan Phor Liang

Maninarakorn Hotel is located close to Nigh Bazaar for both business and leisure guests. The hotel provides a cosy and homey ambiance at 5 minutes walk to the Night Bazaar. To go to Wat Pra Prabat Si Roy, drive through Mae Rim on the main highway, 5 km passing the city look out for a sign and a turning to the left. Continue 25 Km. through villages to the temple which is well signposted in Thai, but watchout for the pictures of a footprint on every sign. To go to Baan Phor Liang Meun’s Botanical Garden, follow the beautiful Lamphun old road through Lamphun hospital (about 2km past the hospital) turn right at the intersection and continue for 700 meters. THINGS THAI
SOM POY a plant used in holy spirit
20
“Som Poy” is the name in Thai of soap-pod (Acacia concinna DC.). This plant is a prickly, scented shrub, occurring in tropical jungles and it leaves are bipinnate with yellow globular auxiliary heads flowers, it has brown pods that wrinkle when dry. Thai people believe that the plant brings luck and happiness and that it can be considered as an auspicious plant. The pods of “Som Poy” are used in Thai traditions and festivals such as Songkran, where the plant is put in holy water to wash away bad luck. Formation of soap suds due to saponin and its pleasant oriental odour may be the properties of the pod that make, it suitable for its use as shampoo. A decoction of pods relieves biliousness and acts as a purgative. It is also used to remove dandruff and to improve hair appearance. An ointment prepared from the ground pods is good for diseases. Sometimes, the pods are powdered and perfumed and sold in the market as soap nut powder.

Lanna Folklife Museum
Take a step back in time at The Lanna Folklife Museum of Chiang Mai. Newly opened in the heart of the city, this museum is housed in a splendid old courthouse building. The neoclassical structures shows dioramas of aspects of Lanna life : textiles, religious sculptures, wooden decorative ornaments and tools, with clear and well translated information. Folklife is an integral part of all Chiang Mai lives and an essential part of the city’s history. In this museum, collections and researches are grouped in the four bigger rooms: the temple reproduction (with details on the architecture, the religious accessories and the beliefs), Lanna folk accessories (and their meanings in Lanna festivals), Lanna textiles (with hand woven silk clothes from each different parts of the North) and Lanna paintings (with a very interesting reproduction of the different steps in painting inside a viharn-temple). Other rooms show Buddha images, folk culture, musical instruments, traditional dances, history and war

equipment. The building has two floors and the visit should take around an hour and a half. Despite the fact that it is more of an exhibition hall than a museum because the artifacts are not very old, it is an excellent introduction to Lanna lifestyle and definitely a wonderful place to visit, especially at this time of the year when Songkran makes the city of Chiang Mai all about Lanna. The Lanna folklife Museum is open from Tuesday to Sunday, from 8.30 am. to 5 pm. Entry is 20 Baht for a Thai adult, 90 Baht for a foreign adult, 10 Baht for Thai child and 40 Baht for foreign child. The successful development of the company since its incorporation as a Thai Limited in 2005 resulted in a constantly increasing number of employees. As CLBS focuses on the well-being of their employees, the company decided to rent further office space at the Airport Business Park to allow their employees enough room to perform their tasks professionally. As CLBS employs both foreign experts and Thai professionals the company attaches great importance to the Thai tradition that is why their additional new office was blessed in February by a monk from Wat Suan Dok. If you are a German, Italian, Spanish, French, English or Thai professional and would like to break new ground, check out the company’s homepage and find out for current job offers. DEGUSTATION
BAAN JANGARPOR Le charme d'antan
