Dear YMCA Family and Friends,

Reflecting on the past year — the Channel Island’s YMCA’s 137th year of service to our communities — we are incredibly proud of a year filled with growth and progress. Driven by a commitment to inclusivity and service, particularly for underserved communities, we are overjoyed to report on our ongoing work to advance the Y’s mission.

This year we celebrated a remarkable increase in summer camp enrollment, welcoming over 3,000 children—a clear indicator of the need for engaging youth development programs in Santa Barbara, North Ventura, and San Luis Obispo counties. We also implemented a new SCALED LearningTM curriculum, a holistic approach designed to complement school day learning through hands-on activities and play.

Our Youth & Family Services YMCA provided a safe space and crucial services to 429 young people. Noah’s Anchorage, My Home, and the Haley Street Navigation Center are vital resources for youth experiencing or at risk of homelessness.

In January, we officially welcomed the San Luis Obispo County YMCA to the Channel Islands Association. After two

years of partnership and dedicated collaboration between both Boards of Directors and staff teams, we are thrilled to have San Luis Obispo in the Channel Islands Family.

Our impact across communities is strengthened by the support of our third-party partners, who funded 4,531 memberships last year and covered program fees for 988 individuals in childcare, camps, and other programs.

Our volunteer boards also play a crucial role in our work, especially with their dedication to our annual fundraising efforts. Every one of our branches hit or exceeded their fundraising goal during the 2023-2024 Annual Campaign, providing support for key initiatives.

We hope you will take a moment to learn more about our work this past year and celebrate the accomplishments of our members and program participants, and the collective impact on our communities. Thank you for believing in and supporting the work of the Y.

Sincerely,

UNAUDITED NUMBERS

YMCA SUMMER CAMPS RECOGNIZED NATIONALLY

The Santa Barbara Family and Camarillo Family YMCA Summer Camps were both recognized in Newsweek’s annual America’s Best Summer Camps feature.

YMCA FITNESS VOTED “BEST OF”

The Santa Barbara Family YMCA was voted Best Gym by Santa Barbara Independent readers. The Ventura Family YMCA was voted Best Gym by VCReporter readers.

A COMMUNITY FOR YOUTH DEVELOPMENT

“I have two kids who began participating in the Monte Vista YMCA afterschool program as Kindergarteners. In a household with two parents working full-time, childcare has been an integral part of our lives since the kids were born. Nevertheless, transitioning to elementary school was a little confusing and a little overwhelming. While many parents are able to show up when school is let out, there are many of us who have to trust that our kids are going to be met after school by someone else and spend the hours somewhere safe. I learned very quickly how lucky we are to have the YMCA afterschool program. The YMCA staff are our village, and I am continually impressed with their hard work, dedication, compassion, and commitment to providing a community and safe space for our kids. The time my kids spend at the YMCA afterschool program is often the most formative and enjoyable part of their day. The kids and staff have become an important community, and our kids look forward to and appreciate the time they spend together with their YMCA family. We are so impressed by the effort put into the schedule and creation of activities and programs that help our kids grow, and that they enjoy.”

Our Commitment to Youth

Before & Afterschool Care and Preschool programs at the YMCA balance the needs of youth, families, and local schools by offering students safe and nurturing programs that focus on academics, enrichment, social skills, and fun physical activity. Youth participate in hands-on curriculum that complements inschool learning with STEM, arts, and literacy activities, career-connected learning, and service-learning projects.

Summer Camp at the YMCA is packed with activities and new friendships. Day and overnight campers experience art, STEM activities, sports and outdoor recreation, field trips, and more. Weekly themes bring energy to camp and make each week a different adventure. All camps are ACA approved with campers’ well-being in mind.

Safety Around Water skills, a necessity for all children, are built into every one of our swim classes. The YMCA introduced group swim lessons more than 100 years ago, and each year, teaches more than a million children invaluable water safety and swimming skills.

Access to enrichment is life changing for all. We offer adaptive sports and physical activity programming, and classes for homeless, foster, and transitional living youth. Teen centers offer cooking, gardening, arts, and more for older youth.

834 teens recieved a free YMCA membership

700 kids received free swim lessons $159,739 in preschool, before, and afterschool care scholarships

A COMMUNITY FOR HEALTHY LIVING

“My sister has been coming to the YMCA for several years now. She was born with cerebral palsy and has limited mobility and requires low impact pool workouts to aid her with her strength & mobility physical therapy. She started coming to the aqua fit classes and fell in love with being back in the water. She not only has gotten herself stronger, but also has made some new friends! From the moment she walks through the door, she is greeted with smiles & warm welcomes from the staff which helps her feel extra special!

I’m grateful to the YMCA for being here in the Santa Ynez valley and playing a huge part in helping my sister maintain her independence and mobility, and for being a positive part of her life!”

Our Commitment to Healthy Communities

LIVESTRONG at the YMCA® offers people living with, recovering from, or who have survived cancer a safe, supportive environment to participate in physical and social activities. Y staff, trained in supportive cancer care, work with participants to build muscle mass and strength, increase flexibility and endurance, and improve confidence and self-esteem. In addition to physical benefits, LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA provides a supportive community where people impacted by cancer and their families can connect during treatment and beyond.

Open Doors scholarships ensure everyone in the community can participate in our life-changing programs regardless of their ability to pay. With financial assistance thousands of kids, adults, and families can benefit from YMCA membership and programs like youth sports, swim lessons, child care, parent-child activities, summer camp, sleepaway camp, and teen leadership activities. All YMCA members receive the same membership benefits, whether they are receiving financial assistance or not.

A COMMUNITY FOR SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

Ashley grew up in a small family overshadowed by her father’s substance abuse. Isolated from peers and teachers who didn’t understand her struggles, she shouldered the responsibilities of caring for her diabetic mother and younger brother while maintaining straight A’s. At nine, she bravely refused to flee with her father to escape a warrant, unwilling to leave her grandmother behind.

For two years, her grandmother was her primary caregiver until she was diagnosed with cancer and passed away in 2017. With her grandmother gone, Ashley felt truly alone. She persevered, balancing her education and job while navigating government assistance programs.

Eventually she was referred to the Navigation Center, where an outreach coordinator worked tirelessly to help her find a place to call home.

On move-in day, her caseworker surprised her with practical items for settling in and a small T-Rex candle. This candle, a symbol of strength and resilience, was a heartfelt reminder of a passing comment Ashley had made during their first meeting. Overwhelmed, she hugged her caseworker tightly, recalling her grandmother’s embrace. For the first time in years, Ashley felt hope and the promise of a brighter future: “At least it is getting better. It’s going to be my turn soon.”
