PHILOSOPHY
VSNA 39 TH ANNUAL CONVENTION 2016
SHIVA YOGA The ultimate goal of human life is absolute happiness, bliss, nirvana, samadhi, moksha, beatitude. Seers, prophets, thinkers, and philosophers all believe that human aspirations, interest, and activity have expressed themselves in four basic fields - philosophy, science, art and religion, of which religion is the most important thing in life. All religions of the world have strived continuously through the ages to evolve principles and methods to achieve ultimate happiness, selfunfoldment and to find a way and means to know and unite with God, to achieve at-one -ment. Yoga is the principle and method developed by seers of India for the purpose of liberation from the trammels of life and achieve happiness by uniting with the eternal. Yoga is a way for knowing oneself and the God as well. Yoga means union with the Divine. There are several kinds of Yogas. Bhagavadgita is all about Yoga and it elucidates 18 different Yogas, of which Bhakti Yoga, Karma Yoga, Jnana Yoga, and Raja Yoga are well known. Raja Yoga is called the King of the Yogas. Happiness is a state of mind. Selfcontentment is true happiness, it is said. There is happiness when mind achieves equanimity, tranquility and repose. But mind by its very nature is fickle. It wanders and jumps around like an enchanted horse from one desire to another. Therefore, mind has to be disciplined and calmed to achieve happiness. Thus, the purpose of Yoga is controlling and taming the mind and guiding it in the right path, which is called ‘Chittavrutthinirodhaha’ in Sanskrit.
The connection and relation between mind and body, which is called mind-body
problem in philosophical psychology, is the basis of Yoga, and it is the most complex and baffling. Indian Seers have cognized six chakras, plexuses, centers of consciousness, energy centers, which the Lingas occupy and where force of Divinity works. These energy centers are Muladhara, Swaadhisthaana, Manipura, Anahata, Vishuddha and Aajna, in human body, which are located along the spinal column starting from the bottom, which connect to seventh energy center Sahasrara, Crown Chakra, pineal gland at the top of the head. The mind may dwell in one or the other centers of consciousness. When the mind is attached to worldliness, it dwells in the three lower centers. When the mind learns to concentrate on the top three, it experiences spiritual awakening and grows and reaches Samadhi when it ultimately dwells in Sahasrara in the head. Sahasrara, the pineal gland in the center of the brain, a recent physiological discovery of late 1960s and early 1970s, is termed by spiritual adepts as the Soul, the “Third Eye.” It sits in the top center of the head at the root of the nose, behind the eyes. The hormones, secreted by the gland, determine the materiality, sexuality or spirituality of the individual. Therefore, an aspiring yogi has to learn the technique of concentrating on the top three energy centers through one or the other yoga to stay away from materialism and to turn towards spiritualism. Yoga is also the technique of attaining efficiency: ‘Yogah karmasu kaushalam’ says Geetha: that is, dexterity, efficiency, in actions is Yoga. One can be enabled by Yoga to acquire super- sensuous, transcendental knowledge, which is called anubhaava in the parlance of Sharanas. It has been practically (Continued on page 7)

PHILOSOPHY
VSNA 39 TH ANNUAL CONVENTION 2016 (Continued from page 6)
proved by Rishis, Seers and Prophets that Yoga is sure pathway to self-unfoldment and to God, the ultimate reality. The earliest systematized Patanjali’s Ashtanga Yoga, whose roots are in Upanishads and Sankhya philosophy, has eight steps: Yama, Niyama, Asana, Pranayama, Pratyahara, Dharana, Dhyana, Samadhi. The first two, Yama and Niyama, are moral and ethical disciplines, respectively. Since sound body ensures sound mind, the next three, Asana, Pranayama and Pratyahara, prepare the body for the soundness of the mind, and ensure harmony between mind and body. The last three all-important steps, Dharana, Dhyana, and Samadhi, lead to Moksha, Bliss, Beatitude. Shiva Yoga is much improved version over the popular Patanjali's Raja Yoga. Shiva Yoga is Poorna Yoga as it harmonizes within it Hatha Yoga, Mantra Yoga, Kundalini or Laya Yoga, Bhakti Yoga, Karma Yoga, Jnana Yoga and Patanjali's Raja Yoga as well as more recent Drishti Yoga, Thraataka Yoga and Praarthana Yoga. While the popular Raja Yoga is somewhat abstract and esoteric, Shiva Yoga is all-comprehensive and made-easy to understand and practice by one and all. Shatsthala Marga which is a very practical technique and method to unite with Shiva and be in Bliss. Shiva Yoga is the crux, the essence, and the-sum-and-substance, of Veerashaivism. Shiva Yoga is not only pathway to union with Shiva, to Jeevan Mukti, but also the vehicle to achieve happiness in life on this Earth as well. How to seek and realize Shiva? The essence of the Eternal Philosophy, Perennial Universal Wisdom, Sanathana Dharma of the world declares that God does exist; He can be realized; to realize
Veerashaivism’s Shivayoga, which originated in Veerashaiva Agamas and was reworked extensively and perfected by twelfth century Sharanas, and which comprises of Panchaacharas, Asthaavaranas and Shatsthala Maarga, is vast improvement over all existing Yogas, incorporating in it the essences of all of the other yogas. Panchaachaaras (Lingaachaara, Sadaachaara, Ganaachaara, Shivaachaara, Bhruthyaachaara) are about moral and ethical conduct, Ashtaavaranas (Guru, Linga, Jangama, Paadodaka, Prasaada, Vibhooti, Rudraakshi, Mantra) prepare the body for made-easy-mental-journey of Shatsthalas (Bhakta, Maheshvara, Prasaadi, Praanalingi,, Sharana, Aikya) towards the union of Self with the Universal Self, union of Jiva with Shiva, Lingaanga Saamarsya (cf.: pp. 55-92, A Journey Through Hindu and Virasaiva Concepts, by Dr. Linga Raju, for detailed explanation).
Him is the supreme goal of humans; there are several ways (Yogas) to realize Him. Bishop Ullathorne says: “Let it be plainly understood that we cannot return to God unless we enter first into ourselves. God is everywhere, but not everywhere for us. There is but one point in the universe where God communicates with us, and that is in the center of our own soul. There He waits for us; there He meets us; there He speaks to us. To seek Him, therefore, we must enter into our own interior (Groundwork of Christian Virtues, p. 74).” This is exactly what Basavanna meant in his vachana: Sthavarakkalivunto, Jangamakkalivilla; Basava said that my body is a temple of Shiva; Shiva is in me. Shiva Yoga tells us exactly the same thing: to seek Shiva in a practical way, while viewing and concentrating on Isthalinga (Isthalinga Pooje), by meditating on our Pranalinga (our Soul) to visualize and realize Bhavalinga (Shiva). Shiva Yoga seems to be the best of all yoga to attain at-one-ment. All sharanas practiced Yoga. Basavanna was known for Bhakthi Yoga, Allama
Prabhu for Anubhaava (Mystic) Yoga, Channabasavanna for Gnana Yoga, Siddharamanna for Karma Yoga, Akkamahadevi for Sanyasa Yoga. They invariably practiced these Yogas in the context, background, framework, spirit as parts of Shiva Yoga. COMMITTEE
VSNA 39 TH ANNUAL CONVENTION 2016 WELCOME NOTE BY REGISTRATION COMMITTEE The Registration Committee is pleased to invite you to the 39th annual VSNA Convention in Maryland. In collaboration with the web committee, we have created an online site where you can register for the convention and all activities. In creating this new site, we had two key goals in mind.
Tharakesh Siddalingaiah
… we request you to register early to take the advantage of early bird pricing.
First to improve the data security. We have improved the security of the entire registration process. Previously the registrant information (attendee names, children’s ages, etc.) was collected by a third party payment processing site, even if you wished to pay by check. Now all the necessary information collected during the registration is locally stored in the convention website and if you pay by check this information will not be sent to third party sites. For online payments (i.e., credit card), only the minimal information required to process the payment is shared with third party payment gateway. Second to create one location to register for all convention activities. We enhanced the website with the options to register for activities like youth retreat, golf outing and, various competitions. We have planned several workshops, forums, tournaments, and competitions, and to help us anticipate the numbers planning to attend, we ask that you inform us of your interest via the convention website. We anticipate that your interests may change as the convention approaches; therefore, we are providing the means for you to update your registration up to one week prior to the start of the convention. To simplify the convention registration process and hotel booking, we have created three packages. When you select one of the packages listed below, we will take care of reserving the hotel room(s) for you. Selecting one of these packages helps us cover the costs of hosting the convention.
Registration Packages Dashoa Package — $5,000 Registration for 6 attendees (Adults & Children) 2 rooms for 3 nights @ Turf Valley Resort
Kayaka Package — $2,200 Registration for 6 attendees (4 Adults & 2 Children) 2 rooms for 3 nights @ Turf Valley Resort
Vachana Package — $1,250 Registration for 4 attendees (2 Adults & 2 Children) 1 room for 3 nights @ Turf Valley Resort
You can register for one of these packages now @ www.vsnaconvention.com. On January 15, we opened up regular registration for the convention. Until May 1, the cost is $129/adult and $99/child 5-12 years. After May 1st the rate increases to $150/adult and $109/child 5-12. There is no cost for children under 5 years of age. Details for reserving hotel rooms will also be provided soon after completing the registration process. We encourage you to consider one of the 3 packages and to register early to take advantage of the early bird pricing. At the time of registration you can sign up for the Youth Retreat ($50/child, 14 and above) and Golf Tournament ($150/golfer). Details of these activities are included in this issue newsletter. Looking forward to meeting all of you at the convention! ಎಲಲರಿಗೂ ಹಾದವಕ ಸ್ಾಾಗತವನುು ಬಯಸುವ,
Tharakesh Siddalingaiah For the Registration Committee
