President’s Message

Lunch at the Forum Winter 2016 Lectures

The beginning of a new year is always a good time to reflect on the past and to make new resolutions. By this time, you may have already broken a couple of those resolutions. Do not fret though; tomorrow is a new day. You can still make a difference for the rest of the year.

Our 2015-2016 Lunch at the Forum series continues this spring with presentations on the experience and expression of jealousy, the vast expansion of Chapman University, and an entertaining look at life at Chapman in the 1960s vs. today.

Because of your continued commitment as a member of Town & Gown, you make a difference in the lives of bright and deserving students who without scholarships may find it difficult to complete their education at Chapman University. Your membership helps fund scholarships for these Chapman students who are our best investment in the future. We thank you for your membership and appreciate your donations to the Endowed Scholarship Fund. Ladies and gentlemen, I invite you to come to Lunch at the Forum and meet this year’s Town & Gown scholarship recipients and hear their dreams for the future. In addition, you will enjoy a gourmet lunch and hear an exciting and interesting presentation by one of Chapman University’s outstanding professors. There are three remaining Lunch at the Forum events to be held on February 4, March 3, and May 5. These luncheons also provide an opportunity to meet new and interesting people. For more information, please call (714)-744-7679 or visit chapman.edu/tg. Wondering what the beautiful new structure at the northwest corner of the campus is? It is the Marybelle and Sebastian P. Musco Center for the Arts built to create extraordinary learning and performing opportunities for students in Chapman University’s acclaimed College of the Performing Arts. Musco Center will also serve the community, offering lectures, festivals, global video streaming of performances and professional entertainment. Details of the grand opening festivities in March and April are now available at muscocenter.org.

Chapman University professors David Frederick and Jennifer Bevan will present a program on Thursday, February 4, 2016. Do not miss “Love, Lust, and Loyalty: The Experience and Expressions of Jealousy”. You will find out what types of jealousy can lead to heartbreak and can even cause relationships to come to abrupt and painful endings. Professor Frederick will present his research on jealousy and the sensational stories of jealousy that provoke jealous behaviors. You will learn about our emotions and how they have evolved, what triggers our seemingly irrational responses, and what role jealousy plays when a relationship is threatened by potential rivals. Professor Bevan will offer practical suggestions for navigating and discussing jealously-inducing situations that arise in close relationships. The next program will be on Thursday, March 3, 2016. Kris Olsen, University Vice President of Campus Planning and Operations, will discuss how the University has transformed in the last 25 years from a 300,000 square foot campus to over 3,000,000 total building square footage of world class academic space. His presentation, “To Infinity and Beyond: From 30,000 Square Feet to 3 Million in 25 Years,” will explain the entitlement process for campus development, including the challenges and benefits inherent to building within a historic district. We will also have a preview of future building projects. Find out what is involved in the construction, historic adaptive re-use, and the restoration of 100-year-old houses on this remarkable and distinctive campus. Be sure to join us this spring for these informative talks.

Nancy Fleeman | 1st VP, Programs

Town & Gown Day Trips

On October 28, 2015, 35 Town & Gown members and guests visited Sunnylands, the Annenberg Estate and Gardens in Rancho Mirage, Calif., for a truly memorable day. The weather was beautiful, the succulent, cactus and rose gardens were inspiring, and the mid-century home held exquisite artwork and furnishings. We had a wonderful lunch on the patio overlooking the gardens. Our Winter Day Trip was a food tour of Old Towne Orange on Saturday, January 23, 2016. We strolled historic Glassell Street and Chapman Avenue, passing antique stores and charming historic buildings on our way to our “global” food tastings, including Felix’s, Paris in a Cup, Pizza Press, and Citrus City Grille, giving us a diverse array of cuisines ranging from Cuban to Parisian to Retro American. We are busy planning our Spring Day Trip to the Jet Propulsion Lab in Pasadena, Calif., which you may also know as one of the “amazing” places Huell Howser visited in his career. We look forward to seeing you on one of our future day trips! Sandee Collier and Darlene Knoop Co-2nd VPs, Excursions

Meet Our Transfer Students They are not new to college but they are new to Chapman. Almost 400 students joined the Chapman Family as transfer students this year. While the most represented home cities were Irvine, Los Angeles, and Santa Ana, about a third of our new students came from more than 60 miles away. They represent 24 states and territories, 7 countries, and 166 transfer institutions. This year’s transfer students are pursuing 53 different programs. Most popular major? Psychology. Most common male name? Jacob. Most common female name? It’s a tie Emily and Danielle. Cristina Giannantonio Talk of the Town Editor

Always Something New The past few months have been full of activity, with both the dayto-day operations of this great city and our business c o m m u n i t y making strides to keep Orange a great place to live, work, and shop. The Village at Orange mall is nearly done with phase one of a multipart renovation effort. The Village recently expanded their shopping and dining mix with the addition of HomeGoods, Petsmart, Buffalo Wild Wings, and The Habit. In Old Towne, the

historic building at 100 W. Chapman Ave., has been bought by Urth Cafe, a coffee and organic food restaurant. They are restoring the building’s original historic façade, and will open sometime in early 2017. Historic Watson’s Drug and Soda Fountain is under new ownership, with plans to re-open the iconic restaurant in the near future. New owner, same nostalgic feel. Over at Grijalva Park, 368 N. Prospect Ave., we recently opened a new Outdoor Fitness Circuit. Our Fitness Circuit offers 19 exercise machines, just like you’d find at a private gym, including several that are wheelchair accessible. The Circuit is completely free to use, though we do limit usage to ages 14 or older. Last but not least, I want to remind you that landscape watering is restricted to Tuesdays only, from now until March. And now, on to 2016…

Student Scholarship Recipient Showcase Please meet two of our Town & Gown Scholarship recipients. We wish them all the best during their time at Chapman. Chantel Boses Throughout my youth and now adulthood, I have witnessed how addiction and its impact on mental health can affect one’s family. These circumstances enabled me to cultivate a profound perspective, drawing the strength to move forward and create a better life for myself through my passion for psychology. I enrolled in Dr. Steven Schandler’s Psychology Senior Thesis course in the fall. His extensive background in alcohol and substance abuse deeply resonated with me and I hope to partake in any research assignment opportunities he may have. I also hope to join Psi Chi, the psychology honors fraternity, and Active Minds. After graduating with my bachelor of arts in psychology, I plan to earn a graduate degree in marriage and family therapy. I hope to continue to empower many others to triumph through their own turbulence and be able to reciprocate the valuable support I have received in my life. Jacqueline Christine Doty In high school I started volunteering at my church, animal shelters, and musical theaters. During this time, I discovered a true passion for helping others, specifically inspiring others to live their lives with purpose. I am a passionate advocate for the continuation of music and art programs as part of an educational curriculum and want to focus on encouraging young students with artistic interest to expand their knowledge of theater, dance, voice, or alternative artistic outlets. After graduating from Chapman with a bachelor of arts in strategic and corporate communications and a self-designed bachelor of science in organizational promotions and media relations, I hope to continue my studies at Chapman by pursuing a master of arts in leadership development. I’m looking forward to a career in leadership and communications, working for a company that desires to protect and enhance the health and well-being of others, particularly through philanthropic efforts.

Chapman Welcomes New Dean On August 1 2015, I became the new dean of the College of Performing Arts at Chapman University. It has been a very strange journey for me, considering that I was born and raised in Venice, Italy, and thought I would remain there. Through a combination of serendipity and hard work, life has turned out very well for me, and my current job is absolutely the best I have ever had. Not only am I joining a group of dedicated and creative faculty and staff, but I get to watch our talented students learn and

grow, as they prepare for their careers after Chapman. That is, without a doubt, the best part of my job, and I love going to all kinds of performances on and off campus. In fact, I joked with a faculty member the other day that seeing the students perform is what balances the hours spent looking at spreadsheets and writing memos. But the icing on the cake is that in a few short months I will get to see our students on the stage of the new Musco Center for the Arts, one of the best performance spaces in the country. Together with the surrounding outdoor spaces, including the Aitken Plaza and the Panic Amphitheatre, Musco Center will enable us to move to a higher level and give students and faculty the platform they deserve to showcase their talents. And it will also be a wonderful experience for our audiences, of course. I hope you will join us and experience the performing arts at Chapman like you have never experienced them before!

WHEN DID TOWN & GOWN GO COED?

by

Let it GROW… If you’ve been a member of Town & Gown for very long, you most certainly know that the Town & Gown Endowed Scholarship is continually growing. Primarily, our endowment grows through annual membership dues payments. The fund portfolio is managed by Chapman and annual awards become scholarships from the interest earnings collected. Each year, several deserving students are selected by our Scholarship Committee and awarded scholarships in amounts that this year ranged from $4,000 to $5,000 per student. You can give a gift to the Endowment at any time and for any reason. Many members make gifts to the Town & Gown Endowed Scholarship Fund annually in addition to their annual dues payment. Other members choose to remember loved ones that have recently passed or to celebrate friends and family members’ birthdays and anniversaries. Over the years, honorary donations such as these from a single member have added up to several thousand dollars directly into the Town & Gown Endowment. Recently, Town & Gown member Rosemary Sieve was delighted to make a generous gift of $500 to the scholarship fund in the name of her granddaughter, Sydney Elizabeth Wilkins, who is a senior at Chapman University this year. What a wonderful and lasting tribute to Sydney and to future Chapman students! Throughout the New Year, please consider a gift in any amount to the Town & Gown Endowed Scholarship Fund. Cards and Letters & Thoughts and Prayers

Although Town & Gown was founded in 1968, and one of its founders was Jim Farley of the Chapman College Development Department, the Board members were all female, as was attendance at most of our events! From researching our Town & Gown minutes, the process of becoming a co-ed organization began when a list of suggested goals for the 1998 Town & Gown Board, included the line “More Men” under the section titled “Increase Membership”. Town & Gown officially went coed starting in 1996 when it was suggested that Jerry Richards be asked to chair the Special Events committee and he joined the Board. Dr. Jerry Richards became the 1997-1998 Vice-President, cochairing with Marcia Gieslar, and in 1999 he was nominated for President. During this same time, more men began attending our luncheons. In 1999, Eric Scandrett, who had recently retired as manager of Chapman’s previous catering services, Aramark, was also invited to be on the T & G Board. Eric was subsequently elected Corresponding Secretary, 1st Vice-President, and then served as our President from 2003-2005. Several men served as Town & Gown Faculty Representatives including Professors Don Will, Jim Miller, Lee Estes, and Dale Merrill who served from 2004 until last year. In 2002-2003 Walter Clark served as a Member at Large, as did Don Blair, while Dan Oliver served as Chaplain. By 2005, Hugh Galt, Carroll Howansky, and David Waldrum were also serving on the Board, and the male representation at our luncheons and field trips kept growing, making our events even more interesting and special. Any males reading this article who would like to serve on the Town & Gown Board, or on committees, please contact President Linda Ruth! Beverly Weatherill Historian

Anne Wood, is doing very well in a memory care facility and she loves to receive picture post cards, especially from her Town & Gown friends. Drop a post card in the mail and make Anne’s day!

Richard Bye passed away on January 13 after a year of poor health. He and his wife, Roseanne, often reflected on the tremendous love and support they received from their Chapman Family. A celebration of Richard’s life will be held on February 27 at 2 p.m. in the Wallace All Faiths Chapel in the Fish Interfaith Center. Feel free to send a note with your thoughts and prayers to Roseanne during this difficult time.
