In this residence, we were challenged with creating a home that would facilitate a client developing Parkinson’s. Her degenerative disease would take her from walking, to wheelchair bound, and finally to bedridden. So all parts of this residence must comply with ADA accessibility, and still allow for a comfortable home designed to the client’s tastes.

This Tahoe sports lodge was designed in a modern rustic style. Given the outer shell of the building, we were given the task of creating a reception area, lobby, and restaurant to be designed around the theme of an area of our choosing. Later renderings were done in DSIT 33 and the hotel was put into SketchUP after DSIT 83.

Deriving inspiration from sites like Cedar House Sports Hotel and Girl and the Goat Restaurant, final changes were made to the design to create a cohesive Tahoe sports lodge.
Given a location in Downtown San Jose, our assignment was to create a live/work loft for a horticulturist & a chef. Merging the two worlds of this horticulturist & the chef, we had to accommodate for plenty of planting space and a laboratory, as well as a pop up kitchen, within the confines of a live-in loft. Working with the use of light through this space, a laser cut folding wall creates this separation of public & private; work & live.

This parallel planes project uses eleven parallel planes and one path to combine them. It is designed with consideration towards the traffic flow around the site of students, and the light and shadows created by the surrounding buildings and trees. Using these site analysis, different areas of seating and relaxation are created. Bringing the wilderness into the city, the path has been made into a rocky mountainside. The planes imitate the views of the dappling of light through trees, and water flows down one rocky slope as a waterfall.

Beginning by looking for inspiration from the site, the filtered pattern of the planes was derived from the mulberry trees on campus, and the rusted steel material from the adjacent sculpture. ELEVATIONS:

Using the dappled planes and the concept of a mountain terrain, a steep/dark rocky climbing side gives way to a shallower/lighter face on the opposite of the path. This shallower hillside enables a waterfall to cascade into the surrounding stream that skirts the structure.

Starting with a solid cube, a space for the occupation of 3 body positions is created. Looking at the limited natural lighting of the site & the industrial materials of the site, this hermitage, made of hewn wood planes with iron siding, gives various views & opportunities for light or shade from the site to enhance unique experiences such as studying, reflecting, relaxing, & reconvening.

Combining the three body positions with the site analysis, different areas are formed to enable stuctured study areas with a desk and opportunity for natural light from the site, more relaxed areas again with desk space for work with computers, and reclining areas for those looking to read or rest which are more shaded from natural light.

Finalizations of the Hermitage came in the use of industrial materials like those seen in the site. Hewn wood creates the planes of the structure, while steel siding helps to ensure the structural integrity of the form.

Beginning with the theme of trees, we were faced with the task of creating wallpaper, tiles, and a merchandise product for a hotel. After creating abstracted images of tree trunks and bark for our wallpaper and tile decals, we created a tile tessellation which we then cut out of clay, glazed, and applied our decals to. For the merchandise product, we abstracted the idea of branches and twigs and applied this design in three scales for our hotel. From these three items, I chose to create the pendant using flat copper wire.
