Mark first made fame for an 18,000 mile round-theworld bike race, where he smashed the previous World Record by a staggering 82 days. He followed this with a 13,000 mile ride down the length of the Rockies and Andes, climbing the highest mountains in Alaska and Argentina. Off the bike, he has ocean rowed through the high Arctic and survived after capsizing whilst rowing the Atlantic. Mark is also passionate about sharing his and many others sporting stories, and has filmed a series of successful BBC documentaries. This includes presenting the build up to the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Broadcaster, Adventurer, Author and Speaker Games as the Queen’s Baton relay has made its way around 70 nations and territories.

Lachlan is a co-founder of the non-profit organisation called The Band4Hope Project which empowers people to spread hope through trackable wristbands, passed on to raise money for charity and inspire acts of kindness.

David Lorimer Director of Awards
Lachlan’s background is in finance and technology but he recently spent two years travelling overland in Africa, supporting communities through trade and raising funds and awareness for charity. He is currently working to rid the world of unsafe injections with The Safepoint Trust.
David is Chief Executive of Character Scotland and creator of the Inspire>Aspire Awards having originally developed the format in 2006. Since then the awards programme has gone from strength to strength reaching many thousands of young people in schools across the UK and further afield. David was Scottish and British Universities 3000m Steeplechase Champion in 1972.

Apprenticeships in Scotland is a social enterprise project run by young people under a unique apprenticeship scheme called Apprenticeships in Enterprise. A team of youth opportunities advisers will be on hand to discuss the different opportunities available for young people, how they can use their key character strengths in the future and to share their own personal experiences of achieving their vision.

The Scotland Malawi Partnership is an umbrella organisation which exists to inspire the people and organisations of Scotland to be involved with Malawi in an informed, coordinated and effective way so that both nations benefit. Visit their stall to learn how to get involved in their work.

The Ayawara Ensemble is a West African percussion and dance group based in Glasgow. They aim to promote music and dance in schools and communities. During the exhibition they will be performing atmospheric WestAfrican Music reflecting the Spirit of the Commonwealth.
The Gratitude Project was created by Lindsay Gale and has recently delivered the programme with great success in Applecross Primary School.
JTS has challenged schools to sell 90kg of Kilombero Rice – the amount of rice which would enable a Malawian farmer to send a child to school for a year. This creates a link between the pupils and the farmers, as well as quantifying the benefits of fair trade.
The Virtues Project International Association is a global grassroots initiative to inspire the practice of virtues in everyday life, sparking a global revolution of kindness, justice, and integrity in more than 100 countries. Visit the stall to learn more about the work of the Virtues Project and how to get involved.
UNICEF is the world’s leading organisation working for children and their rights. UNICEF works with families, local communities, partners and government in Scotland and in more than 190 countries around the world to help every child realise their rights and fulfil their potential. Visit their stall to learn about UNICEF UK’s Rights Respecting Schools Award, which puts child rights at the heart of schools, and an exciting new child rights experience for children, being developed as a legacy programme of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.
The Scottish Youth Parliament is the democratically elected voice of Scotland’s young people. It is a young people’s parliament, designed by young people and led by young people for the benefit of young people. Visit their stall to learn about voter engagement, voter registration and the volunteer opportunities they offer.
Vision Africa supports disadvantaged children and youths in Kenya. Through their “Commonwealth Connections” programme they have developed resources for students in the UK to learn about the similarities and differences between the two cultures. This is the stall to visit for schools interested in Global Citizenship and making partnerships with students in Kenya.
Keep Scotland Beautiful is the independent charity which takes action, campaigns and educates on a range of local, national and global environmental issues affecting people’s quality of life.Visit their stall to learn about Eco-Schools, Young Reporters for the Environment, Junior Climate Challenge Fund, Clean Up Scotland Campaign and One Planet Picnic.
Micro-Tyco is an Enterprise and Citizenship Challenge run by the charity WildHearts. Visit their stall to learn how to take part in the MicroTyco challenge, find out about microfinance and the work of WildHearts in lifting whole communities out of poverty.

Next year we will reach out to the remaining 29 areas so that we achieve our intention of making a significant contribution to best practice in character and global citizenship education. Inspire>Aspire: Global Citizens in the Making will run again in 2014-2015 and activate our ‘Legacy’ year where we will continue to use the unique opportunity of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games to inspire and ‘Connect’ young people throughout the Commonwealth.

The Centenary commemorations for the First World War will begin in 2014. We have created a new poster programme to mark this centenary and provide an opportunity for selfdiscovery and personal development, helping young people to find the inspiration to develop aspirations for life. Completing the poster will help students to learn about values from history and the heroic stories of those who fought and suffered on the front, often making the ultimate sacrifice. In the process students learn new things about themselves about others and about history. A small number of schools have helped to pilot the poster this year. The Thank You Film Awards, run by the Jubilee Centre for Character and Virtues at the University of Birmingham, is a national competition exploring what young people are grateful for. Young filmmakers were invited to make a film to thank a person, group or organisation that has really inspired them, made their life better or improved their local community, Britain or the world! Over 100 films were submitted to the competition and awards ceremonies have been held in Manchester, Birmingham and London.
