CONFEDERATION HEIGHTS BEFORE
LAYERED CITY site 5 A reimagining of Confederation Heights, Ottawa Project Members: Kasper Barynin, Daniel Ganesh, Kenwar Gill, Amos Stapper & Myself
Confederation Heights, an architectural marvel birthed from a collaborative project, is a testament to innovative design and strategic planning. As a member of a five-person team, I had the unique opportunity to design Site 5 of this sprawling development. Site 5, my designated area, was particularly intriguing due to its topography and expansive acreage, which played a pivotal role in guiding my design decisions. Spanning approximately 30 acres, Site 5 was a blank canvas devoid of residential structures, offering a rare chance to create something truly groundbreaking. The topography of the site, with its gentle slopes and undulating terrain, became the cornerstone of my design philosophy. I envisioned a landscape that worked in harmony with these natural contours.

CONFEDERATION HEIGHTS AFTER
SITE 5 PAVED PROGRAM
SITE 5 PEDESTRIAN/SERVICE
SITE 5 BUILDING USE
My approach was to emphasize the natural beauty of the site, using its topography not as a challenge, but as an asset. I proposed the construction of structures that blended seamlessly with the environment, utilizing materials and forms that echoed the natural surroundings. The design also included green spaces that fostered community interaction while preserving the site’s innate charm.

SITE 5 PLAN DESIGN Modelled in SketchUp, Refined in Illustrator Drawing in large part by Amos Stapper
The overarching goal was to create a space that was both functional and aesthetically pleasing, a place where architecture and nature coexist in perfect harmony
My design contribution took the form of a gracefully curved pedestrian path, a feature with its gentle meanders, hugged the contours of a prominent hill, transforming it into an inviting journey rather than a mere route. Along this path, I redistributed the civic amenities previously housed in the old RA Centre, creating a series of engaging and functional spaces.
The path was meticulously planned to ensure each twist and turn revealed a new aspect of the site’s vibrant community life. Key amenities, including recreational facilities, were thoughtfully placed along this route. The journey along the path led to a bustling plaza, a nucleus of community activity which housed a smaller, more intimate recreation centre, offering a modern and accessible space for health and wellness activities.

PERSPECTIVE OF URBAN CORE: REC CENTRE Modelled in SketchUp, Refined in Illustrator & Photoshop
Surrounding this rec centre were multiple commercial amenities, ranging from cozy cafes to essential services, each adding to the plaza’s dynamic atmosphere. This hub was strategically located to ensure maximum accessibility, making it a natural gathering place for residents and visitors alike.
My vision was to create a space that wasn’t just about movement but also about moments – places to pause, interact, and enjoy the vibrancy of community life. The curved pedestrian path and its culmination in the plaza exemplified this, embodying the spirit of connectivity and community that was at the core of Confederation Heights’ design philosophy.

This project, developed during my initial year in the Undergraduate Architecture program, was a collaborative effort with Sarach Cichon, Anya Pono, and to create a structure that not only blends seamlessly with the surroundings of the dormant Hverfjall Volcano but also complements the periodic Northern Lights displays. The design includes an observatory, a coffee shop, office spaces, and a gift shop, all integrated within a semi-circular layout that eases the transition into the rugged environment. The observatory’s design is inspired by the volcano’s morphology, drawing a parallel between the natural and the built forms.

BRONSON INTERLUDE competition finalist A reimagining of Confederation Heights, Ottawa Project Members: Sarah Cichon, Ikemefuna Onyiuke, Kenwar Gill, Amos Stapper & Myself
This project was a collaboration where we devised an intervention of sorts for a forgotten part of a crucial road in Ottawa. The Bronson Avenue is one of the key traffic arteries, and along it student housing is very popular. Our interest in this particular area was to design an intervention that would promote safer transit for students as well provide an environment that acknowledges the needs of its surrounding demographic.

AXO CONTEXT OF SITE Modelled in SketchUp, Refined in Illustrator & Photoshop
The pods and concrete slabs merge to create a dynamic landscape. The pods, adaptable in various configurations - closed, ajar, or fully open - transform spaces from private retreats to bustling marketplaces and communal hubs.
Accompanied by strategically placed concrete slabs serving as robust seating, these elements collectively craft scenarios ranging from serene, solitary moments to lively, social gatherings, embodying the site’s versatility and community-centric design.

The innovative steel pod structures in are versatile architectural marvels, designed to be functional in all seasons. These pods feature three distinct states:
In the closed state, they offer complete privacy, creating intimate spaces for individuals or small groups. The ajar state transforms these pods into semi-private areas, ideal for merchants to showcase and sell their goods, fostering a lively market atmosphere.
Lastly, the fully opened state turns each pod into an inviting communal space, perfect for community-building events and social gatherings.

HUB Considered the heart of the building, it occupies any dealings with the outside the residents may have including: selling legumes, having a barbeque, or keeping an eye on kids playing on the street
The Garage door is one of the essential pieces to the puzzle. With it, a myriad of states can occur which allows the residents complete control over their privacy. It also allows for a mother to watch her children play from the confort of her home while maintain the social distance she may crave.
Lastly she is the lifeline of the household, and now she can be in two places in an instant.
