CHARITY & CORPORATE PARTNERSHIPS Successful charity and corporate partnerships focus on much more than just fundraising in order to deliver real benefits for both parties. Charity partnerships need to be a collaboration and mutually beneficial to deliver change that will impact on those who need it most whilst also meeting both organisations objectives. There’s more than just ticking the ‘CSR box’, plus the general public’s awareness, understanding and expectations of these partnerships is continuously evolving. The key components for a successful charity and corporate partnership: 1. Shared values. 2. Clear and tangible goals and objectives. 3. Flexible partnerships - no longer a ‘one size fits all’ approach. 4. Core partnership team at the right level.
5. Staff engagement, teamwork and skill development at all levels. 6. Analysis, evaluation, reporting - are your initial goals being met and your products / services reaching your target beneficiaries. 7. Brand alignment.
HOW CHARITY CHALLENGE EVENTS CAN HELP YOUR PARTNERSHIPS WITH SOME OF THESE KEY COMPONENTS AND CONSUMER ATTENTION? CORE PARTNERSHIP TEAM Once your charity and corporate partnership team has been established, some form of ice-breaker event would present an ideal opportunity to get individual members working together and building trust. Charity Challenge can help with this by facilitating a challenge event in the UK. We can host one or two day challenges either during the week or on weekends. Taking part in a challenge quickly facilities team camaraderie and relationships are formed far quicker than being in an office. Plus a celebration meal at the completion of a trek, cycle or triple challenge is always enjoyable and allows for creative ideas to flow.
MARKING PARTNERSHIP MILESTONES When certain milestones are reached in your partnership, not only should these be marked and evaluated they should also be celebrated. A great way to do this is by hosting an event and bringing teams from both organisations together. Charity Challenge can host an array of UK or European challenge events and tailor these to meet your specific needs including any celebratory elements or further networking or idea generating platforms.

STAFF ENGAGEMENT, TEAMWORK AND SKILL DEVELOPMENT Whether an overseas or UK based challenge event, this presents an ideal product to help facilitate staff engagement, teamwork and skill development. Employees from all levels and departments from both organisations are placed on common ground when taking on an expedition. This helps with professional relationship development, team building and communications which will benefit your partnership and business on the return of the challenge. Plus the fundraising potential of overseas challenges averages at £120,000 per challenge which is an incredible amount of fundraising income for the charity. Plus it makes great promotional content for the corporate organisation to use. In addition, new skills are learned on these challenges whether they be leadership skills, improvement in communications, greater levels of understanding and patience and relationship development. All of these skills are fundamental across most areas of business and the development and success of your partnership.

Keeping employees motivated and engaged with the partnership and fundraising activities is vital to the longevity of such partnerships. Charity Challenge can help with their large portfolio of both UK and overseas challenge events to ensure there is a continuous flow of exciting fundraising products which appeal to a wider audience. Whether a 1 year, 3 year or longer charity and corporate partnership, Charity Challenge is available to work with you in formulating an event strategy to maximise the productivity of the partnership together with growing your fundraising portfolio, employee engagement and fundraising income. The Account Management Team is fully experienced in integrating with a company’s business plan and objectives to provide strategic, long-term business benefits for both partners having worked in the sector for many years.
ASSOCIATION WITH A SPECIAL EVENT A great way to market your charity and corporate partnership to the wider audience is through bespoke events. In a recent study, 49% of people hear about new charity and notforprofit partnerships through events in the USA. Charity Challenge can work with you to establish your own bespoke event or event series whether it be in the UK or overseas. Depending on the length of your partnership, these can be annual events or a number of events in a variety of locations. Our experienced team would love to help you create an event or series that meets your requirements, engages your audience and communicates your key messages to the general public.
Plus we can keep the momentum building and growing with fresh new products which we develop on an annual basis in line with market and adventure travel trends.
MEASUREMENT AND REPORTING OF YOUR PARTNERSHIPS ACTIVITIES To establish and quantify the success of any fundraising activity or partnership initiative, it is imperative to set up measurable objectives to report against. Charity Challenge fundraising products can be clearly reported against in terms of employee engagement and fundraising income. However, we can also report on many other areas which a Charity Challenge event will reach. For example, the social, economic and environmental return that your event has had within a specific overseas country. Again this creates key content for you to communicate as a result of your partnership.

HOW IT ALL STARTED A tsunami hit South-East Asia on December 26th 2004, devasting 14 countries. Indonesia was the hardest-hit country followed by Sri Lanka, India and Thailand. Charity Challenge felt compelled to support this disaster relief, and immediately formed a partnership with Habitat for Humanity, the second largest house builder in Sri Lanka. Charity Challenge co-ordinated employees from UK based companies to join in this project, and get involved in rebuilding houses for the local communities in Sri Lanka and India. The first groups headed out in April 2005. As a result of the success of this building project, Charity Challenge expanded it’s community project build portfolio to help even more disaster affected countries. Over the next 4 years, 70 projects were supported by over 1,500 corporate employee volunteers, working in 7 countries. These projects made a tangible difference solving problems in developing communities. Volunteers, would take 5 working days (using the weekends to travel), to help the local community to build new classrooms, houses, community and health centres etc. We worked with the following companies: • Reuters • Saatchi & Saatchi • Lloyds TSB • Credit Suisse • Serco PLC
• Diageo • Shroders • GE Money • Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer • HBOS plc
• IBM • RBS • Coutts
Over the past couple of years numerous corporate groups have travelled to these places to help build local schools and houses alongside the local community. Santander have been responsible for sending out numerous groups to South Africa and India and has built an entire school. They have support their ‘charity of the year’ during this process which included the NSPCC and British Heart Foundation. Currently they are supporting Age UK and Barnardo’s.
“Santander took 40 employees to South Africa to build a school in a remote rural community, whilst supporting the NSPCC. The wellbeing of our staff is incredibly important to us, and so choosing the right company to manage the event was cruicial. Charity Challenge delivered an exceptional challenge from start to finish with professionalism, attention to detail and with enthusiasm and confidence. The challenge has engaged and motivated our staff, and there was a real sense of achievement at the end of the build.” April Armstrong, Charity Manager, Santander UK PLC charitychallenge.com

Alternately, if budgets and time are restricted, we offer an array of UK based challenge events which also support local communities. By organising your own corporate challenge event, you will support both the local community in which your challenge operates, as well as benefiting your employees.

Charity Challenge can help you with composing the respective content and communications to help enhance your brand and the ethical values of your company. Charity Challenge is committed to be a standout tour operator in supporting people and the environment, with a focus on supporting local communities, education, the marketplace and the workplace. We intend to further develop a sustainable expedition and community project build model to help future generations to come. This model also allows us to expand to new areas and to interact and support even more countries, cultures and communities. We strive to support the communities in which we work. We have the mechanisms to provide your employees with the opportunities to devote their time, energy and talents to supporting causes that matter which in turn will benefit your company through a highly enthused, motivated and engaged workforce at every level.
“Mitsubishi Electric have worked with Charity Challenge for over 5 years, running 6 challenge events to Asia where we have engaged many of our employees and suppliers to join us, and in the process have raised almost £500,000 for Save the Children. We have been able to increase the difficulty of our Saigon to Angkor Wat cycle each year, which adds to the challenge and in turn grows our total fundraising. By sharing a tough physical challenge, pushing ourselves through the pain barrier together, we develop and build the strongest of personal and professional relationships. The camaraderie and teamwork lasts long into the future, as well as demonstrating our corporate social responsibility aims. Plus with supporting Save the Children, who operate in some of the same countries that we do, and raising substantial income to fund their fantastic work, it is a win win partnership aligning with our CSR objectives. In fact the experience has been so positive, some of our suppliers who joined us on our most recent cycling challenge, have since organised their own challenge events and invited their own suppliers. It’s a great model for CSR, team building, networking, relationship strengthening, and above all, they’re great fun in some of the most stunning parts of the world!”

NEW EVENTS UK event fundraising is an extremely competitive marketplace, with new challenges constantly being introduced, whether it be running, swimming, walking or triathlon style events. The team at Charity Challenge is well-versed in the UK challenge events market and are frequently devising new challenges to keep abreast of current market trends, together with helping to increase participant retention rates, plus drive new acquisition.
EVENT STRATEGY As part of our business operation, we are working closely with charities to produce a 3-year challenge event strategy, rather than delivering a singular event. We view the Charity Challenge support team as an extension to your events team, providing insight and the right event products for your specific organisation to help you achieve your objectives and fundraising targets. Plus not forgetting the huge importance of event delivery, we will ensure all your participants have a fantastic event experience to maximise engagement and retention levels. This way of working creates a win-win outcome for both organisations and therefore a long term solution to build your challenge events portfolio.
