Teachers: the inside on who they are! By Poppy Cheardchoo
Name: Michael Currie Personal profile: During his younger years Mr. Currie grew up in Darwin, a place which he describes as a cool place to live. He wanted to become a professional skate boarder or run in the Olympics but didn’t successfully reach those dreams. Mr. Currie spent his high school life balancing his hobbies, interests and education. He studied the IB (Interna-
8 VUSC
tional Baccalaureate) which had him attending seven classes that includes Biology, Math, Chemistry, History, Theory of knowledge, English and Spanish. He also plays the trombone, Guitar and the piano. But when the future comes to mind he would really like to travel to South America and Scandinavia, maybe even teaching along the way. Outside of school, even thought he doesn’t look like a person who plays sports, he is. He plays
football, and he also plays mixed netball. Sometimes in summer he goes surfing at Torquay. In the school holidays his goal is to go to falls creek for a weekend to snowboard with his friends. Mr. Currie is an astonishing teacher. He sees students and their potential. He also likes seeing students happy and ambitious about their school life. The advantages of teaching, he says, are the different experiences you face each day. But
the disadvantages, he says, are catching the flu and being tired a lot. Mr. Currie enjoys being a teacher and does not regret his decision even though he would still like to become an Olympic runner or a professional skateboarder/snowboarder one day.

level 6 outdoor education camp
On my trip to South Australia from April 4th-7th I participated in many great activities, such as horseback riding on the beach, snorkelling, surfing, canoeing and many other fun things. I often wish I could relive camp because it was the time of my life! On the 4th of April to the 7th of April, 20 students from years 9 and 10 went on an outdoor adventure camp to the border of South Australia, staying at Port MacDonnell. The camp was run by Ms Chapman who organised activities, such as, canoeing, horse riding, snorkelling, bike riding, surfing, night walks along the beach, bonfires and plenty more. Everyone really enjoyed the camp and Ms Chapman and Jayden’s exceptional cooking. Big thank you to Mr Currie, Mr Giles, Mr Miller, Mr Wood and Ms Chapman for making the camp happen and a great experience for everyone. A special thanks to Mr Giles and Mr Currie who had to put up with us for the 6 hour bus parties.

I had one of the best times of my life at camp, we did some amazing activities during the time we where there, we went horse riding, canoeing, snorkelling, hiking, mountain bike riding, and a lot more. I can’t thank Miss Chapman enough for organising this camp; I think its something every student should experience. I had some personal experiences away from my friends. I had a desire to swim with a dolphin, and there was one down in the bay, so I begged Mr Wood to take me for a swim with it, he agreed, and it was one of the best experiences I have ever had in my life. In the last week of term, Year 9 and 10 students went to a camp in Port MacDonnell. We did loads of cool activities such as snorkelling; horse riding, mountain bike riding, surfing and some of us went fishing. Overall the camp was a great experience and taught us some great skills. The only bad things were the cold, early mornings and the dodgy showers.

The outdoor adventure camp that we went on was a great experience. It was full of exciting activities including canoeing, horse riding, surfing, snorkelling and camp fires. My favourite aspect of the camp would be the horse riding, although the horses seemed intimidating, the riding trail was actually very enjoyable. The bus rides although incredibly long were also great because we made the journey a party every time.
Camp was a really fun and exciting experience. We participated in many activities like surfing, snorkelling, swimming, bike riding and a few more. My favourite was snorkelling because I had never done it before. We went to Ewen’s Ponds and one pond was 12m deep and we saw right down to the very bottom, it was really clear. We slept in tents which was really fun because it was the first time I had done it. It’s probably the best camp I have ever been to. Our bus ride was also the best, for nine hours we drove to the place we stayed at, singing, partying and having fun!

singing lessons
By Coung Tran
This year, our school has been very fortunate to have found a brand new singing teacher for all those bright singers out there. Rex, our new qualified singer teacher, encourages anyone with a passion for singing to take a chance and become one of his pupils in his wonderful new classes. These vocal lessons will give anyone who loves to sing a whole new thrilling experience. With so much to explore and learn in the world of singing, Rex will push you until you become the best singer you can be. Each lesson brings endless new knowledge, as you experiment with new techniques and styles that you can learn to perfect. You learn everything from breathing techniques, mouth positions, proper sitting and standing positions to proper pronunciation of certain words to produce nicer sounds. You will learn so much more than you expect. As every singer is undoubtedly unique, Rex will assign each singer with their own set exercises and tasks that will help strengthen your strong points and build up new ones. It is not being the best singer or being better than someone else. All singers, even the best, have their flaws and strengths. Taking up singing will provide you with many benefits. Not only will you walk away with a brand new set of skills, you can also greatly boost your confidence and have heaps of fun with 18 VUSC
your fellow singers. Singing can also potentially increase lung capacity, improved mood and stress reduction which positively influences the immune system. With so much to gain and nothing to lose, why not join? Being in these lessons myself, I can tell you that they are a real treat. I get to sing in a group of very enthusiastic singers, and we get along so well, it almost feels like it’s our own little family in there. We all have huge amounts of fun; doing unusual exercises and watching each other stuff up. Rex really knows his stuff and always understands what each person needs and is capable of doing. It is a very friendly environment, and all new singers are welcomed with open arms. These singing lessons are a real privilege to us students at Victoria University Secondary College, as Rex usually charges $50 for a hour lesson outside of school, so everyone interested should make the best of this valuable opportunity. Rex holds lessons running all day every Tuesday, so students are free to rock up anytime time that best suits them. If you do decide to join, come prepared with a song (one that has a simple melody is most recommended) and bring an audio copy of it, as well as its guitar chords (if possible). If you have any concerns, see our awesome music teacher Mr Siamas or the singer teacher, Rex, who comes only Tuesdays. VUSC 19

joel selwood out cold By James Harrison Geelong star midfielder Joel Selwood was knocked out cold by Saint’s player Farren Ray. Both players contested the ball on Geelong’s half-back flank late in the second term. Ray's hip collected Selwood's head, knocking the courageous Cat unconscious for as long as two minutes. As Ray was reported for forceful contact, Selwood received oxygen and was stretchered from the ground and
substituted from the game. He's got a bit of a fat lip he's had scans so he's clear of bone damage.
"He's obviously got a sore head, but his memory is pretty good. I think it takes more than that to stop Joel Selwood." Selwood's loss left Geelong to fight for the win in the absence of four recent premiershipwinning midfielders, with Ablett gone to Gold Coast and skipper Cameron Ling missing through injury. Jimmy Bartel led the way for the Cats, racking up 27 disposals and kicking a brilliant left-foot goal from deep in the pocket early in the final term that put Geelong ahead for the first time in the match.

transformers: war of cybertron Published by High moon studios, this is a game any transformers fan does not want to miss. War for cybertron is based on the transformers home planet cybertron and is a prequel to the original g1 series. The game tells the story of the legendary battle of the Autobots and the Decepticons and how Optimus the leader of the Autobots became a Prime. The game has all the characters including Bumblebee, Ratchet, Megatron and the vicious Decepticon leader wannabe STARSCREAM. This game is much better than the stupid bayverse ( the live action films) that’s been happening around. The game is on ps3 and x360 and a separate version for the wii called cybertron adventures is out ,which is crap in my opinion. You can start the game with either the Decepticons or the Autobots but……… if you want the 32 VUSC
By Brandon Zerafa game to make sense you’ll need to start with the Decepticons. The plot is that the Megatron declares war on Cybertron and ends up killing the Autobot leader Zeta Prime its up to the Autobots to find a new leader, which they do, an Autobot named Optimus. It’s up to Optimus to lead the Autobots to victory by recruiting a team as fast as he could to defeat……… Megatron. The controls on this are very confusing like R3 on the ps3 is to transform. There’s also an online multiplayer where you go online and play against people from around the world in an online war which is REALLY cool. In my opinion this is pure awesomeness and I think every transformers fan will love so…………. Autobots transform and ROLL OUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

‘Okay.’
‘…. but I‘m not—’
‘And no picking fights. That won’t get you any good girls. The

best girls are always interested in the good boys.’
I gave my brother a warm brotherly hug before he scuttled off into the rowdy schoolyard. He stopped and turned to flash a smile that said Thanks, big bro. I returned a smile that said No probs, little bro. Because I was Will Frankest, a good person. A very good person quite frankly.
‘Now, Melvis, you be good to your teachers. Compliment them now and then, okay?’ ‘Okay.’
‘Okay.’ ‘And be sure to wait here when I come pick you up. If that mantries to approach you again, walk near a teacher. We don’t want you being abducted by a psychopath.’ ‘Okay.’ ‘And for the last time, no more getting sand in your pockets. I know you’re trying to steal sand from the school’s sandpit so you

I loved school. I recycled. I did my homework. I paid my own phone bills. I excused myself from the table. I helped old ladies But don’t worry. We can’t all be angels. I didn’t do any of the bad stuff VUSC 33
will to do good - continued either. I didn’t swear. I didn’t steal. I didn’t wag school. I didn’t smoke. I didn’t drink alcohol (Seriously, what is it with kids just having ‘V’ for breakfast?). I didn’t drive (while I was underage, duh). I didn’t take drugs. I didn’t sell drugs. I didn’t dog-ear pages (Who does that? It turns you off books). I didn’t turn away kids selling cookies for their fundraiser. I didn’t use the toilets in a shop without buying something after. I didn’t not do the stuff on my other list. Yes, yes, it’s a big list too. And again, you should probably start working on crossing out these bad things from your list. Trust me; you’ll thank me for it. I wore my good name proudly, like a badge that shows off my goodness. It was like I was obsessed with being good. Whenever I’d do something bad, well, bad enough to notice, I’d be so overwhelmed with guilt and regret, I’d end up being depressed and suicidal, and then I’d lock myself away in a dark basement, isolating myself from the world while I was scheming up all the crazy good things I could do for the world. I’d sometimes even worry that there was limit to how many good things you were suppose to do, as if I hadn’t went past it anyway. I also looked like a good per34 VUSC
son.It was pretty tough to pull off, looking good, yet cool at the same time. I had perfected in making my short light brown hair look sort of spikier and longer in the front and perfectly even everywhere else. It was neat and tidy, yet had a cool edge to it. It wasn’t extreme or wild or made me look like a try-hard, but it still looked like I had put some thought into it. I had green eyes, the colour that basically represents all goodness. I was neither thin or fat, or quite that muscly, and was of average height, now that I had stopped growing and everyone else’s height had caught up to mine. I didn’t wear sunglasses or leather jackets— in my head, only gangsters or stuck-up celebrities wore them. My fashion sense was much more subtle. I was often seen wearing a hoodie or hooded jacket with a neat button-up or a t-shirt with a clever little centrally-placed image, with some plain jeans or tracksuit pants. That was my style. Hot, smooth, smart, funky — all this with a good-guy vibe to it. Being good got you out of a lot of things. That’s probably why so many people are good. Being an angel, or being seen as an angel, meant that people never suspected you to have done something bad. Not that I had ever done anything bad. If I had, I wouldn’t be telling you this be-
cause I’d just be giving it away. The point is if there ever was a moment where I’d get ticked off at someone and I’d accidentally let my arm slip and it just happened to have landed onto their face, people wouldn’t have believed it. I could be wandering the yard during class time and teachers would think that I was sent on some duty by my teacher and they wouldn’t even ask to see a note. Teachers would give questions for homework and I wouldn’t even need to have done them because the teachers would always say: ‘Don’t worry, Will. I know you’ve done it.’ In everyone’s eyes, I was that fine young lad with the halo above his head. Only one person didn’t see me that way. And it was Sunday Loveme. In my eyes, she was the most beautiful and flawless creation God had ever produced. Even her name was awesome, like ‘hi, I’m Sunday. Love me’, and then people would love her. Seriously, God should get an award for making her. She was just so perfect. I mean, she was so perfect, even her flaws would have been perfect. Except for the fact that she doesn’t want me. I mean, how can she not want me? She was meant to be a good person too. She wasn‘t the same kind of good person though. She was

will to do good - continued eccentric and goofy, and sometimes stuck out like a sore thumb because of how over-the-top she was with helping others. But she was beautiful. She had flowy blonde hair, kind blue eyes and soft peachy lips. Her face always looked tender and natural, like a nice healthy peach. I literally wanted to lickher face. She said that I didn’t always do the right thing for the right reason. She thought that I only did good things to make myself feel good. Yeah, right. What did that even mean? Isn’t that why you were suppose to be good? To make yourself happy. But I didn’t mind about what she would say to me. Her crazy beliefs kind of turned me on. I had to prove her wrong of course. It made perfect sense for a good person to be with another good person. One day when I receive the award for the Australian of the Year, she’s going to see how pure and good my big fat heart really is, and then we’ll get married and make kids and then we’ll teach them to be good people too. Yes, I fantasized. Who didn’t? For now, my first step was to come to her crazy taco night, that I generously signed up for, to help raise money for booksfor the school’s needy library . I was going to volunteer my butt
off and it was all going to be a good cause. I wasn’t just doing it to impress some girl and make myself look good. I was doing itfor the books. I loved books, so really was doing it for the books. No, really. This was me being a good person. And it was going to be great.
buly me down i walk out my door, Heading for school i hear some kids scream, “You are a dumb tool” I ignore thier foul words And continue to walk, Again they do scream “Ill get you, you dork”, Im nearlly at school To start of a day Being hurt by the words, Those bully boys say, Bullies are mean With no heart at all Whilst they do tease, i am walking tall But the bullies continue, My head fills with rage, The feeling of hurt Being locked in a cage i go tell a teacher. Who then speaks to them, “Your actions are mean Dont do it again” The bullies have stopped And now we are friends, That’s all i the past We’ve both made amends. VUSC 37
