Simmons Bedding Company
We transformed SSB from a financially struggling entity into a thriving business. We doubled revenue from $600 million to $1.2 billion and increased EBITDA from $60 million to $157 million. We introduced groundbreaking innovations, suchas the “non-flip” mattress design and the luxury Beautyrest Black line, setting new industry standards. By implementing LEAN manufacturing processes, we revolutionized operations, significantly enhancing efficiency. In 2003, we sold the company to T.H. Lee Partners for $1.1 billion, a transaction celebrated as the topmid-size deal of the year on Wall Street.
Interface | COO | Nov 1993 – Jul 1999
During my tenure as the COO of Interface, theworld’s largest carpet tile manufacturer, we doubled revenue from $600 million to $1.2 billion and tripled operating income from $50 million to $150 million. We pioneered the “Quarter Turn” of carpet tile, which minimized stain visibility and enhanced product appeal. Our team expanded operations by opening new manufacturing facilities in Thailand and China, serving globalmarkets in over 40 countries. Additionally, we spearheaded a cultural transformation, earning recognitionas a “Fortune 100 Best Company to Work For” twice in a row.
Collins & Aikman Floor Coverings Inc. | CEO
| Jun 1987 – Oct 1993
I joined Collins & Aikman, a high-end manufacturer of commercial carpet, specializing in institutionaland corporate markets, during a financial crisis, with the company losing $2 million per month in operating income on $100 million revenue. Through strategic leadership and effective management, we transformed the financial performance, achieving $24 million in operating income on $130 million in revenue. This turnaround, regarded as one of the most dramatic in the history of the carpet industry, laid the foundation for the company’s continued success under Tarkett Inc.
Carriage Industries | COO | 1981 – 1986
In 1981, I joined Carriage Industries, a manufacturer of recreational vehicles. At the time, the company had annual revenue of $8 million and operating losses. Over the next four years, we implemented strategies that resulted in organic revenue growth to $80 million, and the company achieved a healthy operating income of $12 million. This period culminated in a successful IPO in 1984, valuing the company at $30 million. In 2001, Carriage Industries became part of the Berkshire Hathaway portfolio through Shaw Industries.
