COMMUNITY NEWS Line up announced for Morton Stanley Festival

The line-up for this year’s bigger, better Morton Stanley Festival in Redditch has been announced. Manchester reggae sensation Jeremiah Ferrari joins main stage headliners Big Wolf Band, from Birmingham, and Bewdley’s psychedelic Arcadia Roots at the free festival in August. Civic honour for dedicated public servant A man who has dedicated more than four decades of his life to serving the public has received one of the highest civic honours. Peter Pinfield was made an Honorary Alderman by members of Wychavon District Council during a ceremony held at the Civic Centre in Pershore last month. It is only the fifth time in Wychavon’s history that it has granted the title to someone, which dates back to Anglo-Saxon times and used to refer to those who exercised the power of the king. Mr Pinfield spent 32 years serving on Wychavon

representing both Droitwich West and Droitwich East having been elected in 1979. He retired in 2014 to take up the position of Chairman of Worcestershire Healthwatch, an organisation which champions patients’ views. The award is a timely boost for Mr Pinfield who is still recovering from a major health scare after undergoing valve surgery on his heart.

Win a magnificent mini in the name of charity A stunning Classic Mini Mayfair is up for grabs thanks to a special group that want to give back! Mercia Minis is raffling off a mini Mayfair later this year to raise money for St Richard’s Hospice. Andy Stephens, who donated the mini after his wife Barbara passed away last June said: “Even though my wife didn’t go into the hospice we had a caseworker from there who was wonderful. They supported me and if I had any problems they were always there for me, so I decided that I had to do something to give back.” Andy started work on the 1985 Mayfair in November with help from friends at his local car club, Mercia Minis. The Mini is also being donated in the name of one of their members, Steve Ash, who sadly passed away but also received wonderful support from St Richard’s Hospice. The car was finished in the summer: “We completely stripped the Mini apart and rebuilt it. A lot of companies donated the parts and interior to

us and we had a lot of help from the community”. The mini has never been driven so the winner will be the first to take it for a spin! The raffle draw will be held at the Three Counties Show Ground on October the 8th. Rumour has it that there might even be a special guest present when the raffle is drawn! You can purchase raffle tickets at various places in Worcester, the best option is to go to www.facebook.com/MerciaMinisMalvern/ for more information.

Worcester city centre boasts three of the UK’s best parks

Fort Royal Park has become the third of Worcester City Council’s parks to be named in an award scheme recognising the very best parks and green spaces in the UK. Fort Royal, site of the final battle of the English

This international award, now into its third decade, is a sign to the public that the park boasts the highest possible environmental standards, is beautifully maintained and has excellent visitor facilities. The news of Fort Royal Park’s Green Flag was welcomed by Councillor Lynn Denham, Vice Chair of Worcester City Council’s Communities Committee and Chair of the Friends of Fort Royal Park. Pupils Investigate Science From how air works in space, to how to build the best sandcastles, youngsters have been working with the University of Worcester to investigate areas of science that interest them. Schoolchildren exhibited the results of science

projects they have been working on at home and in their school for a special Science Fair. The Fair, organised by Janinne Delorenzo, who leads the Worcester Primary Partnership, involved a number of schools across Worcester who had spent time researching, and investigating a range of science-related topics. These also included looking at which materials were the best insulators, using different sized parachutes to measure the effect of air resistance, building circuits to investigate electricity, researching the planets and the principles of flight. The schools had held mini competitions prior to the day and the best projects were exhibited at the University’s Riverside building. Pupils had the chance to see all the winning projects and ask questions.

COMMUNITY NEWS

New homes to be built at old Worcester pool site New homes are to be built on the site of the old Worcester swimming pool in Sansome Walk. The City Council’s Policy and Resources Committee considered a range of option for the site, including turning it into a car park or offices, and has agreed to go ahead with the development of new housing. The Committee has also made a number of other important decisions for the future of the site. There will be 20 parking spaces on the site exclusively for the use of residents of the adjoining Chestnut Street. There is a shortage of park on the

road and householders have previously been able to use the swimming pool car park. A strip of land at the site is to be sold to the neighbouring Wood Terrace Community Bowls Club, to provide a driveway to the club entrance. The Committee also agreed that the site’s public footpath and an area of mature trees, know as Sansome Fields, will be retained as part of future development there.

Love Pets, Love The Pet Corner

The Pet Corner on Canada Way in Worcester has a new owner and she loves your pets as much as you do. Claire Ditchburn recently took over the business and plans on creating a one-stop shop for all your pet needs. With over 27 years experience as a veterinary nurse, Claire is hoping to add more services that cater to the health and pharmacy side of your pet’s well-being, including dental care, skin sensitivities, allergies, digestive health, parasite control and a wider range of preventative health care and tailored nutrition plans and treatments. The Pet Corner already offers a wide variety of products and amenities for pets including high quality natural food and treats, a wide selection of plush and tough toys including Kong as well as a specific section for grooming services. But it is Claire’s passion for all things pets that is going to help evolve the business to new levels. She says: “I love all animals, wild and domestic. I have a Bassett Hound/Staffie cross called Reggie who is 5 years old. He is completely spoilt but adorable...I’m delighted to have taken over such a well-established business that has a good reputation for providing

excellent service and selling high-quality natural food and treats for pets. I’m looking forward to continue to develop the ethos of loving our pets both inside and out.” Our holistic approach looks at the condition of the individual pet, the look, feel and shape, ensuring they have a nice waistline and look healthy no matter what breed they are. New newsletter encourages young people to have their say

A new newsletter has been produced to help young people have their say on issues affecting them.

The Inbox has been produced by Malvern Hills District Council and will be published on their website twice a year in July and January, as well as being sent to all secondary schools, independent schools and youth organisations across the district. The newsletter aims to keep young people informed about work the council does that is relevant to them, as well as gain feedback from them on a variety of issues and highlight the importance of local democracy.

Cllr Caroline Palethorpe who has been involved in the project said: “It’s vital we continue to find different ways of engaging with young people across the district and give them opportunities to be heard and valued. This newsletter is another stepping stone in that direction”. The first edition is available to download here www.malvernhills. gov.uk/have-your-say

The latest issue includes opportunities to comment on what life is like as a young person living in the district, join the council’s new Youth Forum, apprenticeships, events and the chance to win one of 50 free seven day activity passes for Freedom Leisure’s sites in Malvern, Martley and Tenbury.

Free your mind and cure your fears and phobias today People often feel trapped by issues such as fear, phobias, guilt, negativity, and lack of confidence. They may have been programmed into a child at a young age, there may be no apparent reason that these issues arise, but the good news is that no one needs suffer in this way for the rest of their life. No one is born with these issues, and if you want to let them go they can be removed with the help of the right therapist. A person who wishes to consciously overcome the fear of spiders, for example, may have tried everything they can consciously to, to no avail because the problem is not in the conscious mind. A therapist, such as Karen Baughan, will help a client to bypass their conscious mind and speak directly to the subconscious, where the fears and phobias have taken root. As the mind is in a relaxed state it becomes easier to understand where the problems arise, and to release the effects and free themselves from the emotions that are holding them back. One of Karen’s motivations to become a

qualified hypnotherapist, Time Line Therapist, and NeuroLinguistic Programming (NLP) Master Practitioner Coach, was her own fear of rats and mice. Something that badly affected her everyday life and prevented her from sleeping in case rodents were invading the bedroom as she slept. Having been completely cured of this fear, she has gone on to do the same for many other people with different phobias and issues. Karen has also lost nearly 4 stone in weight since she trained, and put into practice what she has learned. Karen can help speed up the metabolic plate which assists with weight loss. Karen will help you to release this fears and trust in yourself and your ability to cope in the future. You can contact Karen on 07745 426 907, or visit her Facebook Page and make contact that way.

Film review of the month: Baby Driver Every now and then a movie comes along that not only captures your attention with an original premise and intriguing trailer, but also manages to follow through on all of that potential with an impressively executed film that saves its best moments for the ticket-buying audience. Director Edgar Wright’s music-fueled crime thriller, Baby Driver, is all that and more. Written and directed by the Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz filmmaker, Baby Driver casts The Fault in our Stars actor Ansel Elgort as “Baby,” a supremely talented getaway driver employed by a calculating criminal mastermind. Baby’s childish features earned him his nickname, but it’s his prodigious skills as a wheelman that have made him the favorite driver for crime boss

“Doc,” portrayed by two-time Academy Award winner Kevin Spacey. Pulled back into the heist game after he thought he was out for good, Baby finds himself on the run from the police and a colorful assortment of criminals, played by the brilliant Jon Hamm and Jamie Foxx, when a job goes awry. If Baby Driver was simply a crime film, it would be a thoroughly entertaining, if somewhat eccentric, entry in the genre. What it actually is, though, is a brilliant blending of music, mood, story, and perspective that’s much more than the sum of the genres that inspired it. Where recent films like Marvel Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy earned praise for bringing fresh attention to classic songs that served as the backdrop to the on-screen action, Wright makes the music of Baby Driver as integral to the movie as its dialogue or anything that occurs on the screen. Motown, proto-punk, alt-rock, and various other musical genres are the fuel in the engine of

Baby Driver, and Wright shows an expert driver’s command of his vehicle. At a time when remakes, reboots, and sequels dominate the movie calendar, Baby Driver stands apart from the crowd with a fresh experience that’s as ambitious as it is entertaining. Wright makes beautiful music on the big screen with Baby Driver, and you simply can’t help singing along with it. The Guardian: * * * * * IMDB: 8.3/10 Rotten Tomatoes: 94%

How writing your Will could help the hospice

A month-long Will writing campaign led by St Richard’s Hospice is set to return this September.

£95, or a double Will for £150 – with 100 per cent of the money donated to St Richard’s.

During the hospice’s Write a Will Month campaign, a trio of Worcestershire solicitors firms will offer people the opportunity to write a simple Will for

The firms taking part are Harrison Clark Rickerbys and Scaiff LLP Solicitors, in Worcester, and Kitcat and Co Solicitors, based in Malvern. The campaign aims to raise awareness of the importance of writing a Will – which is a document setting out how people want their money, property and possessions to be distributed after their death. Ria Simons, Fundraiser at St Richard’s, said: “Writing a Will should not be a daunting experience, but we understand it is often a process many people don’t like to think about. “During our Write a Will Month we hope to

encourage people to take the first step and make an appointment with one of our participating solicitors.

To take part, simply call your preferred solicitor and make an appointment quoting the “St Richard’s Hospice Write a Will Scheme”.

“Once you have a Will in place, you also have peace of mind to know if you died, everything would be organised for your loved ones.

To contact Harrison Clark Rickerbys, based in Deansway, Worcester, call Rachael Wheeler on 01905 678554 or email rwheeler@hcrlaw.com For Scaiff LLP, based in Foregate Street, Worcester, call Kimberley Gaffey on 727700 or emailkgaffey@ scaiff.co.uk And to reach Kitcat and Co Solicitors, in Avenue Road, Malvern, call David Kitcat on 01684 342173 or email dk@kitcat.legal

It is important to write a Will because in situations when a person dies without one, rules dictate how the individual’s estate is allocated which may not be as they would wish. It is also important to update a Will if personal circumstances change – for example if someone marries, divorces or adopts a child. St Richard’s Hospice is also encouraging people to consider leaving a gift in their Will, after they have provided for family and friends, although there is no obligation to do so.

WHEN A LOVED ONE PASSES AWAY Knowing what to do when someone passes away is always one of those experiences for which in life we never become an expert in, as most of us will only arrange on average between 1-2 funerals in our lifetime. As well as having to cope emotionally there can seem to be lots of decisions that you have to make in a short period of time. In the initial days depending on where the person has passed away will depend on what you need to do next and speaking with friends and family or the funeral director is a good way to get advice. It always seems like there is lot’s to do on top of making the initial arrangements and it can be important to give yourself time to make the right decision for you. The best advice when looking for a funeral is always to shop around to make sure you get the service which you are looking for and

that is right for you. There will be many people who are there to support you from Clergy to Civil Celebrants, Grief counselling as well as your initial contact with the funeral director you choose. On this page are funeral services available to you in the local community.

Securing yourself and your home The elderly can be fragile and this unfortunately means they may be an easy target for criminals. This doesn’t only mean the traditional sense of a criminal, but seniors are also susceptible to scams, fraud and financial abuse. Even though the crime rate for seniors is not as high as you might expect, the rate of fear of being victimised is high among the elderly. The fear may stem from the following reasons: Seniors who live on their own may be slightly isolated from the community. They may be physically fragile or may experience a decline in cognitive and physical function, thus making them vulnerable. They may not be aware or understand modern innovations which help out and are usually essential in terms of modern home security.

In order to counteract these issues there are some measures that can be taken to help you or your loved one. Here are some basic home protection that can be easily undertaken:

• Make sure your door has a peephole: Decorative door glass looks great, but it isn’t really safe. Anyone can see you moving inside and the glass is easily broken.

An inside look at:

BIRMINGHAM BOTANICAL GARDENS

As summer approaches, we’re turning our inside look to an outside look! Next on the series is Birmingham Botanical Gardens. Being one of Birmingham’s best attractions, The Birmingham Botanical Gardens offers something for everyone, be it one of their four stunning glasshouses showing tropical rainforest to arid desert, beautiful gardens, playground, tearoom or their exquisite gift shop. There are four glasshouses, which range from the exotic Tropical House through to the Subtropical, Mediterranean and Arid Houses. With over 1000 accessions, the glasshouses are home to many exotic and unusual plants that are not found in many places in the U.K There is a large lawn in front of the glasshouses with a range of beds and shrubberies around its perimeter. Overall, the

character is that of a Victorian public park with a bandstand set in 15 acres (6.1 ha) of landscaped greenery. Along with the beautiful glasshouses the Birmingham Botanical Gardens also has a butterfly house for visitors to enjoy. The Butterfly House is home to colourful tropical butterflies from the Philippines, Central America and tropical parts of Africa. You can watch these butterflies drinking from exotic, scented, nectar rich plants such as Lantana, Trachelospermum and Heliotrope. See them feeding on sugar-water feeders and saucers of fermenting fruit such as banana, apple and oranges. Each week 100 new pupae are placed in the emerging case and are attached to bamboo canes with glue. Some of the pupae may hatch on the same day, whilst others take

Science in the Park to return Organisers of Malvern Science in the Park say they plan to make it an annual fixture in the district’s social calendar after more than 900 people turned up to the first event. Hundreds of people packed into Priory Park on Saturday, 1 July 2017 to enjoy a day of activities designed to promote the wonders of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

It was organised by Innovate Malvern and the local branch of the Institute of Physics. During the day visitors were able to enjoy activities including hunting for dinosaurs, launching mini rockets, generating electricity with pedal power, blowing giant bubbles and looking at sun spots with Worcester Astronomical Society. Numerous volunteer STEM Ambassadors assisted with handson demonstrations and fascinating science talks were delivered from the bandstand. The day was partly organised in response to growing concerns not enough young people are interested in STEM subjects, which could increase the skills shortage in these areas and hurt Britain’s future economic growth. Cllr David Chambers, said: I attended Science in the Park with my two granddaughters who thoroughly enjoyed themselves and it’s wonderful to hear it is to become an annual event.”

We all know that we should take care of our car every week around the year, but if we are honest, how many of us actually check the water levels, and tyre pressure every week! However when it comes to the winter, a quick mini service, which anyone can do, may well save a lot of time, trouble and money. The top list is

• Check the anti freeze, this prevents the water coolant from freezing • Check windscreen wipers to ensure that in driving rain and snow you always have clear vision. • Check water level for windscreen washer, this will clear away the slush and dirt when driving in the snow. • Check tyre tread – including your spare, and ensure you have plenty of tread on your tyres to

F1

cope with icy nd wet conditions. • Check the oil level • Check all lights and indicators and horn are working You will never know if you might ever get caught in a really cold snap so it is always worth carrying a blanket, a snow shovel, extra clothing and if you are going on a long journey, thena flask of hot drink would not go amiss.

This weekend’s Hungarian Grand Prix marks the teams’ last chance to bag a big result before Formula 1’s traditional summer break - and things couldn’t be more finely poised. With just a single point separating the leading title contenders – Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel and Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton – there is everything to play for in Budapest… Prepare for a Ferrari fightback The last round at Silverstone was a huge blow to Ferrari, to be so far off Mercedes’ pace and to suffer tyre problems which cost Sebastian Vettel a podium finish and all but eradicated his points lead. Heading into Hungary, he has 177 points to Lewis Hamilton’s 176.

Gazza is coming to Worcester! 07 October 2017 Get ready Worcester! A legendary superstar is soon to be amongst us mere mortals.

National Football Museum as the most naturally gifted English midfielder of his generation.

Known as one of the country’s greatest football players, Paul ‘Gazza’ Gascoigne will be hosting an evening this October at the Bank House Hotel in Bransford. The event, which will include dinner, a comedy show and an auction, will have Gazza speak about this career, the lessons he’s learned along the way and what’s in store for him in the future.

The event will take place on Saturday October 7th at the Bank House and tickets will include a two-course meal, a comedy show, live auction for sporting goods and a one-hour talk by Gazza. There will also be a raffle, which will be hosted by Gazza. Tickets start at £60.

“He is very excited to come to Worcester. He is looking forward to coming and meeting some of his biggest fans,” says Nick Peet, owner of Allstar Speaking, which is organizing the event. Paul Gascoigne, or better known as Gazza by his fans, is a former England international footballer and football manager. He earned 57 caps during his England career and has been described by the

For Gazza super fans, VIP tickets are also available and will include a meet and greet and a picture taken by a professional photographer. VIP tickets are £80. Nick stresses that this is not only a great opportunity to meet a lifelong hero for some fans but a way to bring the Worcester community together. He says: “This is a good thing for the community. We don’t get things like this in Worcester – people here normally don’t get the opportunity to meet their heroes unless they leave Worcester and I want to change that. I want to continue to bring more heroes into the community and give people the opportunity to shake their hands and speak with them. That’s the goal.” Tickets for the event can be purchased online at www.allstarspeaking.co.uk or you can email Nick directly at info@allstarspeaking.co.uk.
