The Worcester City 10K will be held for a fourth year on Sunday 17th September, alongside the inaugural Worcester City Half Marathon. After an amazing turnout for the 10K and Run Bike Run in 2016, organisers are hoping that this year will attract even larger crowds.
Prizes for the top finishers for the 10K and half marathon include cash prizes from £400-£50. Last year, Jenny Meadows and Louise Minchin started the races and the race route included some of Worcester’s best sites including the Worcester Cathedral, viaduct and the famous River Severn. This year the race will have the same race route and will begin at the Worcester Racecourse. Each competitor will receive an event medal, technical t-shirt and goody bag
An exciting new addition to this year’s events will be the inaugural Worcester City Half Marathon. Following the start of the 10K route, runners will have the opportunity to get the best of both worlds – running through the beautiful city centre before heading out into the picturesque countryside, showcasing the very best of Worcester. Along with the 10K and half marathon, a Worcester Youth Athletes run will also be happening. For the U11 category, children aged 7-10 years old will complete a one mile loop and U16s, children aged 11-15 years old will run approximately 3km. Prizes for the top three finishers will be awarded at the end of the races.

Ocean returned to touring after a 15-year break and is currently one of the hottest acts on the revival circuit. performers. Salt Fest is a great day out for all the family. Droitwich Spa has much to oer visitors. The town blends old and new and is a place of great charm and character. The town has a rich history of salt production, especially in the Roman, medieval and Victorian periods. In Roman times Droitwich was known as Salinae and the origins of salt extraction in the area go back to prehistoric times. Droitwich Spa brine exists far below the ground and emanates at the surface as springs. The brine is so salty, that the Dead Sea is the only other natural source of salt water able to equal its strength and density.
Droitwich Spa Salt Fest started in 2006 to celebrate the town’s unique salt heritage. Since then the event has grown considerably taking place across the whole town centre and attracting thousands of visitors. Whilst the salt heritage and Romans are still important aspects, the event has now become a showcase for the town, businesses and community. Many local groups take part running stalls and organising activities whilst the music showcase features young and up and coming local

Win a magnificent Mini in the name of charity A stunning Classic Mini Mayfair is up for grabs thanks to a special group that want to give back! Mercia Minis is raffling off a mini Mayfair later this year to raise money for St Richard’s Hospice. Andy Stephens, who donated the mini after his wife Barbara passed away last June said: “Even though my wife didn’t go into the hospice we had a caseworker from there who was wonderful. They supported me and if I had any problems they were always there for me, so I decided that I had to do something to give back.” Andy started work on the 1985 Mayfair in November with help from friends at his local car club, Mercia Minis. The Mini is also being donated in the name of one of their members, Steve Ash, who sadly passed away but also received wonderful support from St Richard’s Hospice. The car was finished in the summer: “We completely stripped the Mini apart and rebuilt it. A lot of companies donated the parts and interior to
us and we had a lot of help from the community”. The mini has never been driven so the winner will be the first to take it for a spin! The raffle draw will be held at the Three Counties Show Ground on October the 8th. Rumour has it that there might even be a special guest present when the raffle is drawn! You can purchase raffle tickets at various places in Worcester, the best option is to go to www.facebook.com/MerciaMinisMalvern/ for more information.

Tips on how to master the back to school season The summer holidays are coming to an end, which means the preparation for a new year at school begins. New school supplies, haircuts, and special end-of-summer outings all play into the back-toschool routine. There are some other things that parents can do for themselves and their kids to ensure a smooth transition into the school year. One way to get the new year off to a good start is to try and set up a bedtime and wake-up routine in advance. If possible, it’s best to establish bedtimes and wake-up times two weeks in advance of the
start of school. By the time the first school bell rings, kids will already be on the right sleeping schedule and it will be one less worry for your family. Another thing you can do that will help the transition happen smoothly is to organize clothing. Figure out and donate the clothes that your children have outgrown and from there, decide what items you may need more of before school begins. Finally, try and plan healthy lunches and snacks, the better you plan out the meals in your home, the healthier choices you will make for your kids. When you pack protein-rich snacks and lunches, balanced with fruits, vegetables, and other wholesome items, you ensure that your children will have the energy and brainpower to make it through their school days. With these tips and more, be sure to start the school year fresh and with tons of energy.

Worcester Graduate Secures Top Scholarship to Study Shakespeare in his Hometown A Worcester graduate has secured a prestigious PhD scholarship with The Shakespeare Birthplace Trust. Helen Hopkins has just completed her MRes (Masters of Research) in Early Modern Studies at the University of Worcester, which she took after completing an undergraduate degree in English Literary Studies with the institution. The scholarship is funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) under its Midlands3Cities STEAMhouse scheme. Helen will undertake her PhD with The Shakespeare Birthplace Trust and Birmingham City University. “I am delighted, excited, and nervous all at the same time,” said the 34-year-old. “It is an amazing opportunity, which I hope will be the gateway to a research career in an area that I love, whether in the archive, at the Trust in another capacity, or as a lecturer/researcher at an institution. A PhD in Shakespeare studies from Stratford doesn’t get much better – I still can’t quite believe I’ve got it.”
She added: “My proposal addressed the notion of what it is to be international, and how an investigation of Shakespeare as among and between international cultures might be conducted. I was invited to an interview and was offered the scholarship soon after.” Helen said she’s always had a love of literature, and a teacher at GCSE inspired her love of Shakespeare. She added: “My children were very young when I started my BA so that was part-time. Now they are older and less dependent I am ready to start a career properly, so it is all very well-timed. “The MRes has been brilliant preparation for this process, and I’m sure the skills that it has developed, as well as all the invaluable advice from my extremely supportive supervisor here at Worcester will help me to get the best out of this opportunity.”
Helen’s project title is International Responses to Shakespeare in the Collections of The Shakespeare Birthplace Trust and the aim is to create an international collection from the archive and investigate the interactions between Shakespeare and the world. “My MRes supervisor – Nicoleta Cinpoes – emailed me the details of the scholarship as soon as they were released,” said Helen, who hails from Droitwich and now lives in Lower Broadheath. “I immediately arranged to see her to discuss it further and begin my proposal. She and I both recognised it as a unique opportunity to further my studies at the centre of Shakespeare scholarship in Stratford.”

Free your mind and cure your fears and phobias today People often feel trapped by issues such as fear, phobias, guilt, negativity, and lack of confidence. They may have been programmed into a child at a young age, there may be no apparent reason that these issues arise, but the good news is that no one needs suffer in this way for the rest of their life. No one is born with these issues, and if you want to let them go they can be removed with the help of the right therapist. A person who wishes to consciously overcome the fear of spiders, for example, may have tried everything they can consciously to, to no avail because the problem is not in the conscious mind. A therapist, such as Karen Baughan, will help a client to bypass their conscious mind and speak directly to the subconscious, where the fears and phobias have taken root. As the mind is in a relaxed state it becomes easier to understand where the problems arise, and to release the effects and free themselves from the emotions that are holding them back. One of Karen’s motivations to become a
qualified hypnotherapist, Time Line Therapist, and NeuroLinguistic Programming (NLP) Master Practitioner Coach, was her own fear of rats and mice. Something that badly affected her everyday life and prevented her from sleeping in case rodents were invading the bedroom as she slept. Having been completely cured of this fear, she has gone on to do the same for many other people with different phobias and issues. Karen has also lost nearly 4 stone in weight since she trained, and put into practice what she has learned. Karen can help speed up the metabolic plate which assists with weight loss. Karen will help you to release this fears and trust in yourself and your ability to cope in the future. You can contact Karen on 07745 426 907, or visit her Facebook Page and make contact that way.

FIVE WAYS TO ORGANIZE YOUR HOME
W
ith the start of September comes the chaotic start of a new school year. From shopping for school supplies to creating a schedule, we know how hard it can be to get back on track after that relaxing summer trip. The last thing you want is to be disorganized. So try these five small tips to help keep your home organised:
1
Coat Storage- with the colder months around the corner, be sure to have a coat hanger in place to help store those puffy jackets.
2
Keys – You don’t have time to be looking for your keys so give them a specific place where they go the minute you walk in the door.
4
3
Mail – set up a mail station in an empty drawer in your entryway.
Work station for cooking – putting all your spices and ingredients you use often in one cupboard will help cut cooking time.
5
Wall mounted shelves – these provide adaptable options and are best used for overflow storage.

A DEEPER LOOK INTO YOUR SOIL
W
hilst there are many things that you can do in your garden during the summer looking after the soil is one of the most important things that you can do. Well fertilised soil feeds your vegetables and flowers and can make the soil finer and easier to manage. At the basic level of soil maintenance, you can lightly turn over the surface of the ground every couple of weeks until Spring. By doing this you can kill a lot of weeds and reduce soil pests naturally and by doing it frequently, you are in a position to monitor the soil and are able to spot and remove bits of roots as the weeds start growing. If you decide to use manure you can use well-rotted animal manure or green manure.
Green manure acts as a blanket to the soil during the Winter months as the fast-growing plants, such as Winter grazing rye, protects the soils nutrients and then lifts nitrogen harvested from the air into the soil.
after “theLooking soil is one of the most important things that you can do
”
Green manure does take planning as usually it needs to be sown in Autumn and different types of green manure can be better for different types of soil. Generally, green manure has deep roots which help break up heavy soils and improve soil structure; deep roots, although beneficial to the soil does need work to dig out in
37
the Spring. If you decide to use animal manure it is best introduced to the soil mixed in with compost. Whilst horse, cow and chicken manure are usually used it is not recommended to use that of dog or cat as they are likely to carry parasites. If you have completed these soil preparations it is time to cover the soil with sheets of plastic or cloches to warm the soil ready for sowing or planting. Or, if you are still looking for that extra charge for your soil some options might be seaweed which is often used to add minerals, bark and woodchip is useful to retain water for established plants or rock dust is used in organic farming to help with drainage. 5 tips for a perfect relocation Relocation is a process we never look forward to. You have to contact utility companies, clean your entire home before you leave, hire a removals company in advance, not to mention pack all your belongings. So here are five tips on how to make the moving process simpler and a little less stressful.
4) Take inventory - This is especially necessary if you’re hiring a moving company. Having a record of your household items is useful if something goes missing.
5) Hook up essential services – make sure you understand how utility bills will be transferred 1) Get organized - Unless you have to pack up and over to you from a previous owner to avoid mix leave in a hurry, chances are you have between 30 ups when you get to your new home. and 60 days to make a plan and ensure that moving day runs smoothly. 2) Label Everything – Makes unpacking that much easier. 3) Seize the opportunity to purge - Moving is a great chance to organize your belongings and get rid of items you no longer use.

How writing your Will could help the hospice
A month-long Will writing campaign led by St Richard’s Hospice is set to return this September.
£95, or a double Will for £150 – with 100 per cent of the money donated to St Richard’s.
During the hospice’s Write a Will Month campaign, a trio of Worcestershire solicitors firms will offer people the opportunity to write a simple Will for
The firms taking part are Harrison Clark Rickerbys and Scaiff LLP Solicitors, in Worcester, and Kitcat and Co Solicitors, based in Malvern. The campaign aims to raise awareness of the importance of writing a Will – which is a document setting out how people want their money, property and possessions to be distributed after their death. Ria Simons, Fundraiser at St Richard’s, said: “Writing a Will should not be a daunting experience, but we understand it is often a process many people don’t like to think about. “During our Write a Will Month we hope to

encourage people to take the first step and make an appointment with one of our participating solicitors.
To take part, simply call your preferred solicitor and make an appointment quoting the “St Richard’s Hospice Write a Will Scheme”.
“Once you have a Will in place, you also have peace of mind to know if you died, everything would be organised for your loved ones.
To contact Harrison Clark Rickerbys, based in Deansway, Worcester, call Rachael Wheeler on 01905 678554 or email rwheeler@hcrlaw.com For Scaiff LLP, based in Foregate Street, Worcester, call Kimberley Gaffey on 727700 or emailkgaffey@ scaiff.co.uk And to reach Kitcat and Co Solicitors, in Avenue Road, Malvern, call David Kitcat on 01684 342173 or email dk@kitcat.legal
It is important to write a Will because in situations when a person dies without one, rules dictate how the individual’s estate is allocated which may not be as they would wish. It is also important to update a Will if personal circumstances change – for example if someone marries, divorces or adopts a child. St Richard’s Hospice is also encouraging people to consider leaving a gift in their Will, after they have provided for family and friends, although there is no obligation to do so.

WHEN A LOVED ONE PASSES AWAY Knowing what to do when someone passes away is always one of those experiences for which in life we never become an expert in, as most of us will only arrange on average between 1-2 funerals in our lifetime. As well as having to cope emotionally there can seem to be lots of decisions that you have to make in a short period of time. In the initial days depending on where the person has passed away will depend on what you need to do next and speaking with friends and family or the funeral director is a good way to get advice. It always seems like there is lot’s to do on top of making the initial arrangements and it can be important to give yourself time to make the right decision for you. The best advice when looking for a funeral is always to shop around to make sure you get the service which you are looking for and

Film review of the month Christopher Nolan’s new film follows soldiers from Belgium, the British Empire, Canada and France as they’re surrounded by the German army and evacuated during the eponymous World War II battle. Dunkirk is an impressionist masterpiece. These are not the first words you expect to see applied to a giant-budgeted summer entertainment made by one of the industry’s most dependably commercial big-name directors. But this is a war film like few others, one that may employ a large and expensive canvas but that conveys the whole through isolated, brilliantly realized, often private moments more than via sheer spectacle, although that is here, too. Somber, grim and as resolute in its creative confidence as the British are in this ultimate historical narrative of having one’s back to the wall, this is the film that Christopher Nolan earned the right to make thanks to his abundant contributions to Warner Bros. with his Dark Knight trilogy. He’s made the most of it.
U.K.’s capitulation to Hitler and no American involvement in the European war. So the climax of the film, as beautiful as it is thanks to the visually stunning presentation of a main character’s fate, is more like the beginning of the real war. Even here, however, Nolan has figured out how to counter convention by having an excerpt from Churchill’s famed “We Shall Fight on the Beaches” speech of June 4, 1940, heard, not as intoned by the great orator himself, but by an ordinary soldier in very ordinary tones. In Dunkirk, Nolan has gotten everything just right. Rotten Tomatoes 93% • IMDB 8.4/10

We all know that we should take care of our car every week around the year, but if we are honest, how many of us actually check the water levels, and tyre pressure every week! However when it comes to the winter, a quick mini service, which anyone can do, may well save a lot of time, trouble and money. The top list is
• Check the anti freeze, this prevents the water coolant from freezing • Check windscreen wipers to ensure that in driving rain and snow you always have clear vision. • Check water level for windscreen washer, this will clear away the slush and dirt when driving in the snow. • Check tyre tread – including your spare, and ensure you have plenty of tread on your tyres to

cope with icy nd wet conditions. • Check the oil level • Check all lights and indicators and horn are working You will never know if you might ever get caught in a really cold snap so it is always worth carrying a blanket, a snow shovel, extra clothing and if you are going on a long journey, thena flask of hot drink would not go amiss.

Back to business as we return to the paddock for the second half of the season. Spa-Francorchamps is one of the most revered racetracks in the world. Its fast, undulating sweeps are a stern test for car and driver, and with an average speed approaching 233km/h/145mph, it’s one of the fastest laps of the season. This is the 50th Belgian Grand Prix to be staged at Spa-Francorchamps. The track was shortened and re-profiled ahead of the 1983 race, since when it’s thrown up some fabulous grands prix. Of the 31 races staged at the ‘new’ Spa, 28 of them have been won by world champions.

the last 6 games are at home. International spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has joined the county for the remainder of the season and, hopefully, he can make a big difference with pitches more likely to be conducive to turn as the summer comes to end. Ravi replaces ‘big’ John Hastings who has returned to Australia after picking up an injury. New Zealander Mitchell Santer who joined for the T20 season has also left after putting in some good performances. This year sees the latest ever end to a season at New Road, with the last match scheduled to finish and it’s hoped there’ll be something more positive to report in October.
