RESTAURANT REVIEW: THE OLD PHEASANT PUB The Old Pheasant pub in Worcester may be suitably named given its eighteenth-century roots, but a new eating and drinking offering makes it more of a contemporary place to wine, dine and socialise. Providing evening, lunch, buffet, and early bird menus, I strolled down historic Friar Street and New Street on a Thursday evening for dinner.
For starters, I had a creamy yet delicate Broccoli and Stilton soup, which was promptly served. Of the two main courses on offer, I chose the duck breast. The breast was juicy and tender and came served with a delicious combination of braised red cabbage, Boulangea potatoes and a rich mixed berry sauce. Dessert was a salted caramel melt in the middle, oozing with flavour and gooiness, served with ice cream. With two drinks, the meal came to a reasonably priced £28. The interior retains much of its original timber and a function room for hire is at the rear. As well as food, the Old Pheasant offers gin tasting events, DJ’s, and live music. 25 New St, Worcester, WR1 2DP. Tel 01905 616606. www.theoldpheasant.co.uk Stuart Bryan

CHILDHOOD INTERRUPTED
Much research indicates that modern childhood is becoming increasingly challenging due to factors such as social media bullying, educational pressures and issues around sexuality. Children a century ago may have been free of such contemporary difficulties, but were faced with the trauma of living with World War One. How children lived through such times is the theme of a new exhibition at the Hive called ‘Children Interrupted’.
The exhibition examines how children’s home life and education was disturbed by the conflict. Worcester had the second highest incidence of war time child labour, engaging in activities such as harvesting fruit, making jam and knitting clothing for soldiers. As part of the Worcestershire World War One Hundred Programme, the exhibition included 50 children learning about the war, choosing materials for the exhibition and participating in some of the activities the children carried out during the conflict. Research for the exhibition was carried out by staff and students from Worcester University History Department and Worcestershire Archives and Archaelogy Service. The exhibition runs from November 2nd to the 29th. Stuart Bryan

Teachers Complete Charity Run Raising Money in Memory of Former Student
Staff at the University of Worcester completed the Birmingham Half Marathon honouring one of its students tragically killed in the Tunisian terror attack. Four staff covered the 13.1 mile course on Sunday, October 15, raising funds for Smile for Joel. Chosen by staff as the University’s Charity of the Year for this year, the charity was set up by Joel Richards’ family to support families who are victims of murder and terrorism. Joel was a Physical Education and Sports Coaching Science student at the University of Worcester. At just 19, he was killed in the 2015 terror attack, in which 38 people died, including Joel’s uncle, Adrian Evans, and
grandfather, Patrick Evans. Charlie Bassett, from the Finance team, Mark Kilburn and Steve Harborne, from Facilities, and Neil Laurenson, who works in the University’s Careers Service, all took to the streets to raise funds. Neil finished in an impressive 1 hour 17 minutes, coming in 19th place, followed by Charlie at 1 hour 58 minutes, then Mark, at

2 hours 15 minutes and Steve at 2 hours 19 minutes. They still hope to reach their fundraising target of £500. “It was a privilege to run the Birmingham Half Marathon with University colleagues to raise money for Smile for Joel,” said Neil. “The run itself was tough but enjoyable and the level of support was beyond anything I had ever experienced. Whilst it was nice to achieve personal bests, we were most proud of running for Joel Richards and his family.” Mark added: “I think that the good cause definitely helped me press on during those times in the race when I began to tire. Distance runners usually experience negative emotions along the lines of ‘I can’t go on’ and ‘Why on earth are you doing this?’ but such thoughts were easily banished.” To donate, visit https://www. justgiving.com/fundraising/ universityofworcesterstaff.

DISPLAY PUTS VOLUNTEERS IN THE SHOP WINDOW Volunteers have put themselves in the shop window thanks to a new display in Malvern’s Tourist Information Centre. Malvern Hills Volunteering has created the design in the window of the Church Street building as a way of promoting the benefits of volunteering and the opportunities on offer. The not-for-profit organisation, supported by Malvern Hills District
Council and South Worcestershire Citizens’ Advice, is responsible for matching individuals interested in volunteering with organisations looking for new volunteers. A total of 105 organisations are registered with them and there are over 220 volunteering opportunities available across the district. In the last 12 months the group has placed more than 60 people with local organisations desperately in need of help. Current roles available include helping older people, fund-raising, social media and website management and administration positions such as secretary to a trustee board to name but a few. Sessions are held every Wednesday and Friday from 9.30am to 12.30pm at Malvern Library, which allow potential volunteers to come and find out more about the opportunities available.

RECONNECTIONS: CONNECTING YOUNG AND OLD IN AND AROUND WORCESTER As winter is arriving it can be comforting to stay inside, but for increasingly more older adults, home can be a prison all year around. To address loneliness and social isolation a new service run by Age UK, called Reconnections has been set up in Worcestershire. Reconnections is a free service for Worcestershire residents over the age of 50, of which 35,000 are
• • • • •
estimated to suffer from some form of loneliness. Statistics show that lonely older people are nine times more likely to visit their GP, four times more prone to depression and five times more liable to enter residential care. The Reconnections scheme is the first of its type nationally and it’s aim is to help clients understand options in the local community and then enable connection with appropriate services and activities. Once a referral is received an informal phone call is made and then followed up by a personal visit to discuss and co-develop an action plan. Over 500 people are part of Reconnections and the service is always looking for volunteers. TOP 10 JOBS TO DO IN YOUR GARDEN DURING NOVEMBER
Leaves are falling rapidly, and wind and rain are on the increase. Tender plants will need protecting from frost, gales and freezing rains. Move plants into the greenhouse, or into a sheltered spot, but if you can’t, it is worth wrapping plants or pots. Remember winter can be a tough time for birds in terms of water and food, so keep supplies well topped up. Here are the top 10 jobs to do this month. 1. Clear up fallen leaves - especially from lawns, ponds and beds 2. Raise containers onto pot feet to prevent waterlogging 3. Plant tulip bulbs for a spring display next year - Tulips are amongst the most popular of bulbs, valued for their brilliant flower colours and shapes. Plant in autumn for a show of spring flowers. Choose from a large range to suit the situation. 4.Prune roses to prevent windrock - Roses are one of the most popular garden plants. These beauties come in a range of colours, many with scented blooms, and they can be grown in
borders, containers, over arches, pergolas and as groundcover. They are easy to grow and live for a long time, if looked after. 5. Plant out winter bedding 6. Cover brassicas with netting if pigeons are a problem -When it is not practical to lift or move tender plants, the best way to protect them from the winter cold and wet is to wrap them up. In exposed or cold areas, even relatively hardy plants may need protection. 7. Insulate outdoor containers from frost bubblewrap works well 8. Stop winter moth damage to fruit trees using grease bands around the trunks 9. Put out bird food to encourage winter birds into the garden- By putting out additional food, gardeners can make a significant contribution to supporting wildlife over winter. It is also a great way to watch wildlife even in the smallest of gardens or balconies, often at very close quarters. 10. Use a seasonal bonfire - where this is allowed - to dispose of excess debris unfit for composting.

WHY HAVE A DESTINATION WEDDING? Well, we’re tempted to say, “why not?” Planning a wedding away from home is attractive to different couples for different reasons. Here are just a few: destination wedding tips.
1. You’ve always imagined your nuptials in a certain vacation spot. Maybe you spent an idyllic vacation earlier in your relationship at a gorgeous Caribbean resort or a laid-back Hotel. Or maybe
one of you spent summer holidays at a quaint inn or a rustic Scottish farm. If it’s easy to graft a picture of yourselves in wedding duds onto those wonderful holiday memories, a destination wedding may be just the ticket for you. 2. Your families and friends are from here, there and everywhere. Many a couple with far-flung families have thrown up their hands in despair at trying to find a spot that suits everyone. Soon it occurs to them: If everyone’s going to have to travel anyway...Voilà, destination wedding. 3. You’re not into traditional hotel/ reception hall weddings. You’ve been there, done that (you know who you are—you’ve attended a wedding approximately 40 out of the last 52 weekends). All of these kinds of options are leaving you cold. But someplace warm?

Ah, now that’s a different story. 4. You want to make the planning easier (yes, easier). It’s true that any wedding—whether at home or away— can morph into a logistical nightmare. But because many resorts and hotels have on-site wedding coordinators that do all the legwork for you, a destination wedding can be less stressful to plan. 5. You want to streamline costs (or even, in some cases, save money). No one can definitively say that a destination wedding costs less than an athome reception. But no one can say it costs more, either. However, it often turns out to be easier to keep costs in check in a faraway locale. Two reasons: One, you’re likely to have a smaller guest list (the biggest way to save $$ on your wedding is to keep the list lean); and two, your choices are

less copious than they might be at home. When you’re planning from afar, it all seems exotic and wonderful, so you’re more likely to be happy with the simple clutch of local flowers the hotel provides, whereas at home you’d be visiting a halfdozen florists and being tempted by a more lavish (and pricey) bouquet. MUSICAL CLEAN UP PLEA HITS THE RIGHT NOTE A musical plea to dog owners to pick up after their pets has hit the right note with users on social media. Dan Bayliss and Jude Allen, members of Malvern Hills District Council’s Community Services team, produced the song ‘My Doggy’s Done a Whoopsie’ to highlight the proper way people should deal with their dog’s poo.The pair decided using music would be a fun way of getting the message across and it proved an instant hit, with more than 5,300 views so far across the council’s
social media sites. The song, which is set to the tune of ‘He’s Got the Whole World in his Hands’, features lyrics promoting the message people can put bagged dog mess in any litter bin - not just dedicated dog poo bins. Jude said: “The video is a bit of fun but it has a serious message to it. There’s really no excuse for leaving your dog’s poo on the floor, on a wall, hanging off a tree or any of the other places we find it. Hopefully the power of song will help people remember when their dog does a poo they should pick it up and put it in a bin, any bin.” The video is available to view on the Malvern Hills District Council Facebook page, on Twitter @MalvernHills_DC or on the council’s YouTube channel.

GUNPOWDER PLOT STOKED FEARS THAT SOWED THE SEEDS OF ENGLISH CIVIL WAR, ARGUE ACADEMICS
It is a moment in history so famous it is part of British folklore and has been marked every year since - the failure of the Gunpowder Plot.
about the Gunpowder Plot, but less is known about its legacy in 17th century England,” said Professor Oldridge.
In a special talk this month historians from the University of Worcester will explore what happened after that infamous night in 1605. They will outline how the conspiracy to blow up the Houses of Parliament and subsequent challenges to Protestant rule would have long lasting divisive consequences and sow the seeds of the English Civil War 40 years later. In the free talk entitled Gunpowder, Treason and Plot, at The Hive on November 2, at 6pm, Professor of Early Modern History, Darren Oldridge, and Principal Lecturer in History, Dr Paddy McNally, will be addressing what happened after Guy Fawkes and his fellow conspirators were caught.Their talk will show how the events of 1605, still marked today by Bonfire Night each November 5, and 1641, shaped politics and religion for generations. “Everyone knows
“The annual celebration of the failure of ‘Gunpowder Treason’, as it was then known, helped to create a sense of Protestant identity - perhaps even national identity - in the period. It reminded people of the constant, terrible dangers of what was called ‘popery’ – the beliefs and practices of Roman Catholicism.”

population. As you get older, it becomes even more important to remain active if you want to stay healthy and maintain your independence.
Many adults aged 65 and over spend, on average, 10 hours or more each day sitting or lying down, making them the most sedentary age group.
If you don’t stay active, all the things you’ve always enjoyed doing and taken for granted may start to become that little bit harder. You may struggle to pursue simple pleasures, such as playing with the grandchildren, walking to the shops, leisure activities, and meeting up with friends. You might start to get aches and pains you never had before, and have less energy to go out. You may also be more vulnerable to falling. This can all lead to being less able to look after yourself and do the things you enjoy.
They’re paying a high price for their inactivity, with higher rates of falls, obesity, heart disease, and early death compared with the general
Strong evidence There’s strong evidence that people who are active have a lower risk of heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, some cancers, depression, and dementia. If you want to stay pain-free, reduce your risk

of mental illness, and be able to go out and stay independent well into old age, you’re advised to keep moving. It’s that simple. There are lots of ways you can get active, and it’s not just about exercising. “As people get older and their bodies decline in function, physical activity helps to slow that decline,” says Dr Nick Cavill, a health promotion consultant. “It’s important they remain active or even increase their activity as they get older.” What is physical activity? Physical activity is anything that gets your body moving. It can include anything from walking and gardening to recreational sport.Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate activity every week. Ideally, you should try to do something every day, preferably in bouts of 10 minutes of activity or more. One way of achieving 150 minutes of activity is to do 30 minutes on at least five days a week. Examples of moderate-intensity aerobic activities include:
• • • • •
Walking fast Water aerobics Riding a bike on level ground or with few hills Playing doubles tennis Pushing a lawn mower
As well as regular physical activity, try to reduce the amount of time you spend sitting down during the day. This means avoiding long periods of TV viewing, computer use, driving, and sitting to read, talk, or listen to music. For more informations visit www.nhs.uk

FA STAFF COMPLETE POSTGRADUATE QUALIFICATION WITH UNIVERSITY OF WORCESTER Staff from the Football Association have been taking part in a postgraduate qualification with the University of Worcester to enhance their coaching skills. The Postgraduate Certificate (PGCert) in Sports Coaching is delivered at St George’s Park, the national football centre, by University staff. Fifteen FA staff are now nearing the completion
of their qualification, while a further 12 have just begun their studies and will be mentored by the first cohort. The FA staff are undertaking three modules of work, including coaching philosophy and practice, leading and managing in sport, and professional placement, which comprised a specific FA project. With participants vastly experienced in their respective fields, the course aimed to share coaching knowledge, best practice and aid professional development. Tony McCallum, National Coach Development Manager at the FA, is one of those currently completing the course. “It’s certainly helped me and my understanding of why we do what we do in terms of coach education and teaching. It’s been hugely beneficial for me in the job,” he said.

WHEN A LOVED ONE PASSES AWAY
Bereavement usually means losing someone we love through death and also follows on from change and loss. It is a devastating event, turning our world upside down and changing our lives forever. The death of a loved one is probably the worst loss we will ever experience. Grief is the reaction of over-riding intense pain and emotion that follows on from the death of someone who has been close to us. There is no single way to grieve. Everyone is different and each person grieves in

his or her own way, and there is no telling how long it will take. Grief can express itself in many different ways, often with very powerful, frightening and confusing feelings. Because each person within the family grieves in their own particular way and at their own pace, it is important to take one another into consideration. Talk to each other about thoughts and feelings. Although no two people’s experiences will ever be the same, there are some common feelings which you may experience at different times in your grief. As well as a deep sadness, you may feel anger, fear, guilt, anxiety, loneliness, despair, preoocupation with the loved one that has died, denial, restless over-activity or apathy. All these feelings are natural reactions, but the intensity may leave you feeling that you are not managing everyday life in the way you would like to. Most bereaved people suffer from depression at some stage in their grief. The main thing to remember is that this is not a

permanent state. It will pass when its purpose has been achieved. Although some people may need professional help if it deepens and persists. Accept that it isn’t unusual not to feel your ‘normal’ self. Be gentle with yourself for grief is an exhausting thing. Some return to routine can help as long as you try to balance this with time to reflect on what has happened to you. Try sticking to a regular routine of eating, sleeping, exercise and relaxation. Look after yourself. Your self-esteem may have taken a real knock. Acknowledge yourself each time you achieve something, even if it is getting up in the morning or staying in bed to give yourself a rest. We can be very good at noticing all our mistakes and ignoring our good points, especially when we are feeling down. Remembering happy times with the person who has died can be painful but nontheless healing. Looking at photographs, making a memory book and keeping meaningful mementoes may help. Take things slowly. You might want to delay making big changes such as moving house,
starting a new relationship or changing job. You have already suffered a huge loss and need to adjust to that first. Usually it helps to seek support from several sources. No one can grieve for you. You have to find your own path through your grief, but you do not have to walk the road alone. On these pages are funeral services available to you in the local community.

Worcestershire hospitals leading the way in improving care for patients with learning disabilities and mental health problems Worcestershire’s hospitals are leading the way nationally in improving patient care thanks to the innovative introduction of learning disability and mental health registered nurses. Nine new Learning Disability and Mental Health Nurses, who will work across wards at the Alexandra Hospital in Redditch and Worcestershire Royal Hospital, joined Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust on September 25.
The Trust is leading the way in patient care by directly employing Learning Disability and Mental Health nurses to work alongside adult trained nurses in an acute setting. The roles have traditionally been based in community NHS organisations, providing additional support to hospital patients and colleagues when needed. Evidence has shown that by integrating the specialist nurses as part of the ward based teams, the care and experience of patients with learning disabilities and mental health illness will be improved. The nine new nurses received a three week intensive education programme to support them in developing the skills and knowledge needed to care for patients within an acute hospital. This will be followed by a tailored 12 month support package which will include mentoring and rotation opportunities across the Trust.

Blade Runner 2049 Review Blade Runner 2049 is the sequel to the 1982 sci-fi classic Blade Runner. Directed by Denis Villeneuve (Arrival, Sicario) and once again based on Philip K. Dick’s novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, it successfully recaptures just about everything excellent about the original and is a superb sequel to one of the greatest and most important science fiction films of all time. Thirty years after the events of the first film, LAPD Officer K (Ryan Gosling) works as a Blade Runner, retiring old rogue replicants (artificial humans) hiding out around the Los Angeles area. One day while on a job, K discovers a long buried secret in the yard of a replicant which leads him on a journey to track down former Blade Runner Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford), who has been missing for decades. Featuring amazing visuals and some of the most philosophical and thought-provoking themes since the original, Blade Runner 2049 is a
masterpiece of science fiction and is possibly one of the greatest sequels ever made. I was transfixed the entire time, to the point where I felt that even blinking would cause me to miss something I wanted to see. The cast was brilliant as well, especially Ryan Gosling, who does a fantastic job carrying the film as its lead actor. However, perhaps best of all, is that seeing the original is not a requirement to fully understand everything that is going on, although it would probably still help to have done so beforehand. I’m almost certain that author Philip K. Dick would be proud of this film. I know I am.

AWARD WINNERS AT PERSHORE CENTRE
Steve Bauer, Head Coach at Pershore Tennis Centre, has been awarded Coach of the Year and Disability Program of the Year at the recent Hereford & Worcester County Awards Banquet which was attended by all the major tennis clubs in Herefordshire and Worcestershire. He was presented with his award by Mr Richard Herriman, President of H&W Lawn Tennis Association. He will now have the opportunity to be recognized at a regional and perhaps national level early next year when he goes up against other county winners.
Steve has achieved so much this year, growing the club’s membership by around 30% from January to date by running free ‘join in’ sessions at this year’s Pershore Carnival and Plum Festival, as well as staging an all-day Great British tennis weekend at the club, which drew in 40 new members alone! The Club leads the way in disability tennis by running regular indoor sessions with groups from Worcester, showing that Pershore Tennis Centre’s ‘all inclusive’ Head Coach is truly inspiring to the next generation of player, whatever their background.
The club was also honoured by being awarded ‘Highly Commended’ Club of the Year and also one our young volunteers, Bradley Smith was awarded Junior Volunteer of the Year. A fantastic night for Pershore Tennis Centre being recognised for its brilliant year. Pershore Tennis Centre is a vibrant local club, with 5 outdoor courts and 3 indoor courts hosting an all year ‘round coaching programme for adults and juniors alike. The programme includes adult group sessions, morning socials, private lessons, team training, cardio workouts, easy drills as well as a competitive team spirit; entering two men’s team in H+W league and SWAS league, as well as Ladies 4 winter teams in the H+W leagues. Juniors are also welcomed to sessions and lessons as well as competing in tournaments all around the county. They have inter-club tournaments and day time events and are open 12 hours a day, with a friendly and welcoming atmosphere. Looking towards the future, Pershore Tennis Centre are continually planning to improve facilities; including resurfacing their outdoor courts. If you’d like to be a part of the Club, please do call in or speak to our Reception or Coaching team for more information. Check out details on line :

AN INSIDE LOOK: WORCESTER CITY ART GALLERY & MUSEUM Located in the centre of Worcester, this Museum can sometimes be overlooked. Thousands of people walk past the building every day. In order to draw attention to this gem of an attraction it will be the subject of this month’s inside look. Worcester City Art Gallery and Museum is housed in an elegant Victorian building in the heart of Worcester. The beautiful interior is a warm and friendly place, with something for all the family to enjoy. Immerse yourself in the special exhibitions, events and activities throughout the year. The museum gallery has lots of amazing things to see including dinosaur footprints, Worcestershire Sauce archive and many more interesting objects from a real Roman mosaic to a Native American totem pole. Whilst you are here visit the engaging and interactive galleries dedicated to telling the story of the Worcestershire Regiment and the Worcestershire Yeomanry Cavalry and not forgetting the recreated Victorian Chemist Shop.
Another captivating aspect of the Museum which makes it a great attraction is the ever changing exhibitions. For example Enquiring Minds which finished on the 11th of November. Visitors can discover and celebrate this rather special period from Worcester’s past in this exhibition drawn from the museum collection and some special items on loan.Seemingly impossible engineering feats, global wildlife explorations, early investigations into iron-age man, worldrenowned artist sketching trips: all these amazing activities were happening in Worcester a hundred and fifty years ago. Worcester was a burgeoning cultural city in a busy changing landscape. Exhibition highlights are drawings by naturalist John Gould, land- and cityscape watercolours by artist HH Lines and local artefacts discovered by famous archaeologist Pitt Rivers. This I just one of the powerful exhibitions that come to the Museum and the Art Gallery all of the time. The Museum represents local interests and is constantly changing and transforming, making it an attraction that everyone can visit again and again, for free!

When traveling on rural or country roads, there are a few things to keep in mind that will help keep you safer on the road: Visibility: Country roads often suffer from reduced visibility due to large hedgerows, trees and overgrown verges. So, slow down when traveling on country and rural roads and you’ll minimise any surprises that you may find around the corner. Passing spaces: From time to time country roads will also narrow and you’ll have to use passing places. On such roads, look ahead and when you meet a car coming he other way judge who is best placed to pull over. If in doubt, err on the side of caution and pull into the nearest passing space and let the other person pass. Wildlife and farm animals: Always be aware that you may encounter wildlife and farm animals loose on country roads. Always try and
CASH FOR CARS
keep a steady pace that allows you enough time to react when you do encounter them, slow down so as not to frighten them and give them a wide berth as you pass. Cyclists, horses and walkers: Quieter country roads also attract lots of cyclists, horse riders and walkers in the summer. So, stay alert to the cyclists, keep on the look out for them particularly when going round ‘blind’ bends or over ‘blind’ summits.

Warhol to Walker: American prints from pop art to today One of the world’s most iconic artworks is being brought to Worcester for the forthcoming exhibition Warhol to Walker: American Prints from pop art to today, which opens at Worcester Art Gallery & Museum on 4 November. The exhibition from the British Museum explores great American printmaking from Pop Art to today and includes Campbell’s green pea soup by Andy Warhol. Focussing on modern and contemporary American printmaking, the exhibition features nine key works from the British Museum’s print collection. The exhibition opens with three of the greatest printmakers from the Pop period: Andy Warhol, Jasper Johns and Robert Rauschenberg, whose work took varied inspiration from the mass media consumer society of 1960s America. The progress and creativity of printmaking through some of the most dynamic and turbulent years in US history is followed right
to the present day, with prints by a relatively young AfricanAmerican artist Kara Walker, and the recent work of one of the giants of the field, Jim Dine. Alongside the prints on loan from the British Museum, the exhibition will also feature works from the Worcester City Collection including pieces by Eduardo Paolozzi, Howard Hodgkin and Richard Hamilton. These vibrant treasures of the city’s collection highlight how artists have pushed the boundaries of print-making and explore subjects as diverse as the Vietnam War, Bing Crosby,
gin, picnics and the universe. This exhibition is a unique opportunity to view these works alongside great prints on loan from the British Museum in Worcester Art Gallery & Museum. Admission to Warhol to Walker: American prints from pop art to today is free and the Art Gallery & Museum is open Monday – Saturday 10.30am – 4.30pm. For more information contact the Art Gallery and Museum on 01905 25371, visit www.museumsworcestershire. org.uk or follow @ worcestermuseum
