“ B IT BY BIT, PUTTING IT TOGETHER. PIECE BY PIECE, ONLY WAY TO MAKE A WORK OF ART.” –STEPHEN SONDHEIM
P U T T I N G I T TO G E T H E R
Putting it together is a celebration of the details; of taking everything into consideration. As graphic designers we depend on the details as they help influence our creative process from concept to final execution. The following projects highlight my passion for the details and how, when put together, they have shaped me into the designer that I am today.

Develop and design an alternative and reusable paint package for a real or fictional paint company’s new line of eco-friendly, powdered mix, house paints. All packaging materials used must be biodegradable, and free of volatile organic compounds. W H AT T H E Y M A D E
I chose Montana, a company known for their high quality spray paints, but new to the world of house paints. My audience was wealthy art enthusiasts who desire the color and personality that graffiti and street art culture is known for over the often times soft, neutral world of house paints. With this in mind I developed a system of brightly colored, paint pods to help set the company apart from their competition.

Pick a typeface that is offered through Monotype Imaging and design a type specimen booklet around it. Take into account the characteristics and personality of the typeface, allowing them to inspire the story and visuals. W H AT T H E Y M A D E
I chose Bembo and began to look at defining features of the typeface. The italic, lowercase “f” reminded me of the f-holes of a violin. This association fit well with Bembo’s Old Style classification. From there I decided to tell the story of the typeface as though it were a symphony.

Choose a company that is dead, dying, or defunct, and rebrand them to be relevant to a modern audience. Based of characteristics of the brand develop a new logo and visual system. Design a series of products, services, or events within the theme of the new identity system. W H AT T H E Y M A D E
For my company I chose Tonka. Known for their almost indestructible toy trucks, I decided to rebrand them for a more mature audience, focusing less on creating tough toys, and more on products and services to help develop and assist tough adults. Taking heavy influence from blacksmithing I designed a visual system that conveyed strength and confidence.

“ I T’S THE LITTLE DETAILS THAT ARE VITAL. LITTLE THINGS MAKE BIG THINGS HAPPEN.” –JOHN WOODEN
SOME OF THE PIECES
Choose a film director who has made a series of movies that share a single thread, or concept. Develop an entire film festival around this thread, taking into account graphic style, photography, and tone. From these factors create a system of deliverables that promote your festival while at the same time showcasing your director and his body of work. W H AT T H E Y M A D E
Christopher Guest was my director of choice. After watching several of his films repeatedly I began to piece together a common thread that connected his movies, the characters he depicts always believe their lives to be more interesting than they really are. From this thread I developed a visual system that represented the ridiculousness of the characters and the outrageous events that they often find themselves in.

Design the San Francisco International Airport’s Environmental Sustainablity Report for 2012. Come up with a concept and develop it into a visual system to be carried out throughout the books text and charts. W H AT T H E Y M A D E
Environmental Sustainability Reports don’t really have a reputation for being exciting. To help fight this, I designed funky infographics to break up the monotony of the standard bar graph and pie chart, and create an engaging experience for the reader. Taking influence from San Francisco’s large street art scene, I created each chapter opener with a fold out stencil that the reader can use to make artwork with the message of sustainability.

Choose an event and design an infographic timeline without using time as a reference. Instead, find regularly occuring actions within the event that can be recorded to show the passage of time. When displaying the infographic take into account the context of the event. W H AT T H E Y M A D E
I chose to play a game of Super Mario Bros. from start to game over for my event. As I played through the game I recorded actions such as jumps, coins collected, enemies defeated, power-ups obtained, and deaths. I hollowed out an old Nintendo cartridge to house my fold-out infographic that I disguised as a chip board and packaged it all up in an old Nintendo game sleeve.

Develop and design glassware packaging for a company of your choice. The packaging must effectively protect the glassware during it’s transportation from factory to consumer home, while efficiently using packaging materials in order to reduce current packaging usage. W H AT T H E Y M A D E
After researching various companies, I decided upon Sierra Nevada Brewery Company. I was inspired by their sustainable business practices, as well as the fact that they were about to celebrate their 30 th anniversary, making for a perfect excuse to create a limited edition package of wheat beer glasses. The package was created from a single sheet of cardboard, and a paper insert that needed minimal glue to hold the glasses in place

MFA THESIS
A graphic design thesis project is the crown jewel of any graduate, requiring a great deal of time and effort in order to complete. The problem being addressed is one of the graduates own choosing, making it unique, and of personal importance to them. Thesis projects begin with a problem, and then, through vast research and critical analysis, an objective is developed. Once an objective has been solidified, a series of deliverables is designed by the graduate as a solution to the problem at hand. My thesis seeks to bridge the communication gap between independent game developers, and a broader gaming audience through curated play.

Research the problem of marketing and promotion that independent game developers face when releasing their games. From your research develop a visual solution to help bridge the communication gap between indie game developers and a broader gaming audience. W H AT T H E Y M A D E
With the advances in technology and digital distribution that have been made in recent years, now more than ever it has become easier for indie game developers to create and release their work to a global audience. However, they are now faced with the problem of effectively promoting their games to this new found audience. While researching the issue I was inspired to form a collective of artists and designers that would work together to put on public facing arcade and art galleries where people unfamiliar with the indie game community can come, and experience first hand what the community has to offer.

THANK YOU! TA M M Y
For always calming me down during my moments of stress. Marrying you was the best decision I could have made. I love you more and more each day, and look forward to what the future has in store. TEAM NOARD! FA M I LY
For being loving, supportive, patient, and most importantly... weird. FRIENDS
For reminding me that there is life outside an InDesign document. I N S T R U C TO R S
Phil Hamlett, Mary Scott, Hunter Wimmer, Scott Rankin, Michael Kilgore, David Hake, Andrew Loesel, Bob Slote, Tim Carpenter, Jeremy Stout, Kathrin Blatter, Tom McNulty, and Andrew Jagoda. Without all of your wisdom I would not be the designer that I am today.
