CREATIVE MACKINTOSH FESTIVAL

www.glasgowmackintosh.com

www.glasgowmackintosh.com

It is with great pleasure that I introduce you to the third Creative Mackintosh Festival. In this special year 2014, when the spotlight is on Glasgow, we have chosen to offer a month-long programme of arts and cultural events to celebrate Charles Rennie Mackintosh, Glasgow’s most famous architect, designer and artist and his creative legacy in Glasgow. In May, the Glasgow School of Art suffered a devastating fire, which served to remind us all that the legacy of Mackintosh is fragile, despite being built in stone, metal and slate. The festival programme will give some great opportunities to see the Mackintosh buildings as well as art and design work which is rarely on display. The major Mackintosh Architecture exhibition at The Hunterian will demonstrate the complete range of Mackintosh’s work in architecture and design and be accompanied by a range of talks, walks and exhibitions including a spotlight exhibition on “Begonias” from a private collection, “Travels with Mackintosh” and “William Davidson, Art Collector” about one of Mackintosh’s great friends and an early collector of his work. Our key creative commission is ‘Unlooking’ by Alex Rigg and Oceanallover, a promenade performance featuring costumes which are inspired by Mackintosh paintings. ‘Unlooking’ is a dramatic and thought-provoking piece which will be performed at six Mackintosh venues during the month of October. Mackintosh Queen's Cross will host events including: dinners; classical music recitals; art exhibitions; workshops and a Grand Mackintosh Tour. The Hill House at Helensburgh will have “After Margaret” a demonstration of Margaret Macdonald Mackintosh’s gesso techniques.

CREATIVE MACKINTOSH FESTIVAL

Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum will be running tours, life drawing and art classes and a weekend of fun art activities for young people. Glasgow School of Art will offer their walking tours of Glasgow during the opening week of the festival. Families will enjoy the workshops and events at Scotland Street School Museum during the October half term break. Find out the story of the House for an Art Lover at an evening talk by David Leslie, ex Chair of the House and Glasgow School of Art, in the Music Room with other key partners who were involved in building the House. The House will also hold wine tastings, workshops and a free family event. The Lighthouse will host its popular evening open talks and ‘Lighthouse Late’ – featuring music, bands, food and drink. Willow Tea Rooms will hold a free exhibition telling the story of how the Tea Rooms were designed and offer Tea with Mackintosh for all the family at which you can enjoy tea and cakes and hear the history of Glasgow’s most famous tea rooms. We are delighted to welcome several new partners with their events to the 2014 festival: Glasgow Women’s Library; Provand’s Lordship; St Mungo Museum of Religious Life and Art; Glasgow Museums Resource Centre, Nitshill; The Glad Café in Shawlands and Lyon & Turnbull. Read on for a full list of their events. Many events are free and open to all ages, whether you are a Mackintosh aficionado or new to Mackintosh – there’s something for everyone in this year’s programme. On behalf of Glasgow Mackintosh, I hope you enjoy whatever events or exhibitions you choose to visit.

CREATIVE MACKINTOSH FESTIVAL

Un-Looking is a new creative collaborative project between Oceanallover, led by Alex Rigg and the Glasgow Mackintosh partnership which represents 9 major Mackintosh buildings and collections. The landscape paintings of Charles Rennie Mackintosh, which were painted during the final decade of his life from 1918 – 1928, will be the inspiration for spectacular costumes and performances with music at seven Mackintosh buildings in and around Glasgow during the Creative Mackintosh 2014 festival. The performances will challenge the audience to un-look for themselves and to see Mackintosh’s work in a new way. The aim of the project is to raise awareness of the wonderful Mackintosh landscape paintings and help to reconnect the paintings with his monumental buildings for both residents of, and visitors to, Glasgow. Un-Looking will be led by Alex Rigg, an artist and performer who studied at Glasgow School of Art and has extensive experience in design and performance, working in a range of disciplines in a collaborative way. This project emphasises art as inspiration. All performances will be promenade, will last approx. 45 minutes and will be both outside and inside the buildings. All performances will be free of Charge (although there will be the standard entrance charge for admission to the Hill House). Space may be limited at certain locations so it would be a good idea to arrive in sufficient time for the performance and be prepared for the possibility of rain.

Much of what he does and creates involves collaboration with other artists, musicians and craftsmen.

Join Johnny Walker and go on a journey as Charles and Margaret did to Southern France... Charles and Margaret first arrived in Roussillon in 1923. They stayed at a hotel in Amelie les Bains and rented an old toll house, across the river, as a studio. For their first summer they moved down to the coast and rented rooms in Collioure. What had started as a holiday became a permanent stay and this is where Charles and Margaret enjoyed some of their happiest times together... Come along to the House and join former UK Sommelier of the Year, Johnny Walker, who has travelled the globe, including the South of France as a whisky and wine ambassador and who has also held top positions in some of the UK’s leading hotels and restaurants for an entertaining afternoon getting to know Johnny and sampling some of the fabulous wines of the region.

The beauty of House for an Art Lover lies not only in the external character of the building or the sophistication of the interior but also in the story of how it came to be realised. From its original design by Mackintosh, dating to 1901, to its final realisation in 1996, it is clear how challenging it must have been to build House for an Art Lover. This is a unique opportunity to hear from four of the most significant contributors, Graeme Roxburgh, Andy MacMillan, James Cosgrove and David Leslie as they give an unparalled insight into the creation of House for an Art Lover. They transformed competition entry drawings into workable architectural plans and without them the house would never have been realised. Free event, includes a glass of wine. C. R. Garnethill is at the heart of Glasgow’s city centre but remains an unknown quarter for many. This walk takes in its grand tenements, painted gables, miniature park, synagogue and world acclaimed architectural triumphs. These and other fascinating landmarks help us to tell the stories of some of the most remarkable achievements of women in Glasgow’s history.
