Project:

Bar at the Sea

Context:

FAUP - Projecto I (2005/06)

Location:

Av. do Brasil, Foz, Porto, Portugal

Supervising professors: Arch. Rui Américo Cardoso

Resume:

It’s an important academic exercise for a begin-

ning architecture’s student, because it’s represents the first project carried out with a real context. The project/ exercise aims also to stimulate a sensitivity in the use of a modular repetition and organization. The solution found is characterized by its strong horizontality, given the fact that the project is organized in a single floor. It passes a certain description in relation to the existing environment, due to his height, below the avenue, opening only to the seafront. The plan design seeks to reproduce a stylized form of the irregular rock (on witch the project stands), through the combination of different elements.

Context:

FAUP - Projecto II (2006/07)

Location:

Passeio das Virtudes, Porto, Portugal

Supervising professors: Arch. Alberto Lage

Resume:

Since this is a section of town quite consolidated, it

has some disruptions that resulted from the confrontation of different urban logics and rules, not only by the urban web, but also by the scale of buildings facing the plot in a physically and visually way. This confrontation led to the stagnation of this area in time.

The shape of the proposed building responds to a

concept where it is assumed a base of support (just like the terraces of the valley), surmounted by two volumes. The proposal is materialized in order to integrate the color and texture palette of the surroundings, using this way, materials with a fast aging process, such as granite, copper and wood.

Collective Housing

Context:

FAUP - Projecto III (2007/08)

Location:

Quinta Amarela, Porto, Portugal

Supervising professors: Arch. Maria JosĂŠ Casanova

Resume:

In the urban plan, the proposal seeks to materiali-

ze a balance between the different scales that characterizes the area. Under this assumption the different heights, resulting from the pre-existence, shape a profile of the adjacent streets.

The proposal brings a fresh experience to the blo-

ck interior, combining the character of public and private space, through the organization of the project’s volumes. The developed building represents a central role in the plan, it affirms the new street, while it manages the distribution of public space. This building is also a key part in the height transition through the plan.

Gaia’s Public Library

Context:

FAUP - Projecto IV (2008/09)

Location:

VL8, Vila Nova de Gaia, Portugal

Supervising professors: Arch. Nuno Brandão Costa

Resume:

In an environment, under development, and com-

plemented by a number of areas characterized by “uncertainty”, this proposal seeks to create a certain dynamism, as well as a public attraction.

The architectural object proposed, is materialized

in a concrete volume that sits on a granite wall, positioned in a way, that is incorporated in a radial system of visual lines, which is felt from the highway. This massive volume, turned to the experience of the inside space, includes areas for public use, thus containing at its base, the areas essential to the functioning of the equipment. With such a clear division, became possible, a consistent relationship between the different public and private spaces.

Project:

Office Buildings

Context:

TU Delft - Design Project (2009/10)

Location:

Lusternau, Voralsberg, Austria

Supervising professors: Arch. Laura Alvares

Resume:

Connected to the urban area, the office building

becomes a compact volume that is “shaped by the directions of the small plot, as well as the height of the surrounding buildings. It creates a harmony between all sides.

The building itself is organized in three floors: the

ground floor incorporates the public program; and in the top floors, are the spaces more related to the office work. One of the main concerns in the program organization, was the flexibility of the offices, in a way that would be possible to create links between different areas.

“Centro Cívico de Tongobriga. - Contributos para a sua reconstituição conjectural.” (Tongobriga´s Civic Center. - Contributions for its conjectural reconstruction.)

Context:

FAUP - Dissertação de Mestrado Integrado em Arquitectura (2010/11)

Location:

Freixo, Marco de Canaveses, Portugal

Supervising professors: Architect Pedro Alarcão Archeologist Lino Tavares Dias

Resume:

In a dissertation, whose original goal, was just the

analysis and disigned reconstruction of Tongobriga’s Roman theater, the act of drawing proved to be such an advantageous tool for the analysis, that we felt the need to expand the subject of study, to the entire Civic Center .

Through this study, we unveil the structural grid of

the Roman city of Tongobriga, analyzed and studied the public buildings of the civic center (forum and theater), and unraveled the existence of a third public building, the hypothetical amphitheater.

Abstract

The roman civic center, was built by equipment that corres-

ponded to different functions in the city, such as religion, politics, commercial trading and leisure.

The aim of this Master thesis in Architecture is the study of

the Roman Civic Center, in the ancient city of Tongobriga. It was the result of the expansion of urban areas (around the 2nd century a.C), and grew to a set of public facilities that imposed Tongobriga as a center of attraction and decision (civitas).

With this study, we intend to understand how the Civic Cen-

ter was lively experience and how it related to the landscape, as well as reach it’s conjectural reconstruction.

In the first part of the work, we tried to show to the reader,

the Roman city of Tongobriga; a step, that in the context of the research, is equivalent to a phase of analysis and familiarization with the surroundings of the studied object. The approach to the Civic Center´s area is made, from the general to the particular, as well as gradually, into it.

In the second part of the work, a brief review is made of the

city of Tongobriga, according to elements that were unfolded in this investigation; then, an analyze is made to buildings from the civic center: forum, theater and hypothetical amphitheater.

In the case of the forum, we analyze the existing traces in

order to see how it’s space was occupied, as well as see how it’s elements were distributed (composition, proportion, between others).

In the case of the theater, we propose a layout thought the

analysis of the existing remains and use it to compare with other known theaters of the same time; and insert it, finally, in the civic center.

In the hypothetical amphitheater case, we analyze a set of

traces, identified by us, that seem to configure a curvature, oriented in the same direction as the theater, and that seems to suggest the position of a cavea.

In the end we present an hypothetic design to rebuild the ci-

vic center of Tongobriga, in which the elements adopted are directly result from the performed experiments.

Location:

Foz, Porto, Portugal

Resume:

To answer a request of the office, Jose Carlos

Cruz Architects Ltd., I performed a scale model 1 / 100, with a base of 80x80cm.

The model represents the surroundings for a hou-

sing project, where one of the prerequisites was the possibility of withdrawing the proposal for future replacement with the updated design.

The material used was white cardboard to repre-

sentation of the surroundings, with careful detail in the representation of the elevations, thus creating a high emphasis in the figuration of stonework, windows and doors. A detailed work that resulted in a faithful and strict model of implementation site.

VĀSTU SHILPĀ FOUNDATION - Índia 10 International Workshop (2010)

Location:

Sarkej Roza, Amedabad, India

Supervising professors: Arch. Balkrishna Doshi Arch. Rajeev KathpaliaMaster

Plan developed with:

Yatin Fulari, Seeja Lorenzen, Marta Montero, Simon Richardus, Charles Rocha, Jaime De Haro, Anna Wulf, Nuno Sousa (trainstation).

Resume:

In South West Ahmadabad lays the Sarkhej Roza,

a historic monument, surrounded by a range of slums. In the West both a North to South orientated new freeway and a train track form a double belt. However, the freeway does not form an end, nor do the train tracks. In the context of the Indian culture we are confronted with a the urban growth of Ahmedabad City.

In this “new world” we see ourselves forced think

about the basics principals: the growth of city, with the transition over two barriers; the constant habitation growth and annexation; the lack of water and its cycle use; as well as the role of the architect towards this picture, at which point should the architects intervention go? and where does it begins? As a result there is a master plan, with the development of a public square, a train station and a principle of dwellings for this context.

PROPOSED SCHEME:

Highway

Go Architecture Contest (2010)

Location:

Porto, Portugal

Plan developed by: Charles Rocha Jean Ascenção Samuel Pereira

Resume:

Go architecture!, a 48 hour contest organized

by the FAUP’s student association. The competition is launched on a Friday night, with deadline on the following Sunday night.

The challenge in this issue was the design of the

project to a movie theater, on a plot by the Douro river. The given answer is launched with the phrase, See and be seen!

The proposal comes as exceptional image, taking

the high elevation on the river bed, trying to affirm itself on the landscape.

PHOTOMONTAGE - GO ARCH. CONTEST - WORKSHOP - MODEL MAKING - SKETCHBOOK

Context: Collaboration for: - Impromptu Arquitectos Lda.

Resume:

To answer a request of the office, Impromptu Ar-

quitectos Lda, I realized a total of five photomontages in Photoshop, for presentation of a project for a contest in Finland.

The photomontages consisted in the integration of

the proposal in its surroundings, looking to give prominence and featured to the project.

In this work, it was necessary to recreate the sur-

roundings of the project from different pictures, because there was no direct access to the site. The photoshop work also involved the application of textures, shadows/ lighting, and the use of radial filters.
