USE OF TEAR GAS AND PEPPER BALLS DURING CHARLESTON PROTESTS CALLED EXCESSIVE BY ADVOCATES
4
Charleston Police Department has confirmed officers used tear gas and plastic balls filled with the active ingredient in pepper spray to disperse protesters assembled peacefully in Marion Square on May 31, raising eyebrows and questions from civil liberties advocates. A day after large protests that preceded destructive riots on King Street, law enforcement agencies dispatched common nonlethal measures against protesters assembled near Marion Square downtown. Hundreds of people crowded the streets of downtown on May 30 to join in nationwide protests over continued police violence that has led to the deaths of black Americans. In the most recent high-profile case, a Minneapolis officer held his knee on the neck of George Floyd, killing him. The following day, protesters gathered in areas across the peninsula, eventually being corralled by police into Marion Square as a countywide curfew approached. After declaring the assembly unlawful and telling them to disperse as they protested in front of police in full riot gear flanked by armored vehicles, some were taken down and arrested by officers. The remaining crowd eventually moved to Meeting Street, where more arrests were made. A Charleston police spokesman confirmed Thursday that “pepper balls and CS gas” were used during May 31 protests. Between May 30 and the morning of June 1, 42 people were charged with disobeying a lawful order, police say. Jail records show at least 35 of those arrests came on Sunday
542
afternoon. Several area agencies were on hand to assist in the response, including the county sheriff’s office and the State Law Enforcement Division. Pepper balls are similar to paintballs, but are filled with a substance that has the same active ingredient as pepper spray. CS gas, a type of tear gas, is banned for use by the military under chemical weapons agreements, but is allowed for use by law enforcement to control riots. The aggressive tactics used by police, including deploying chemical agents and projectiles against peaceful protesters, is drawing criticism from civil liberties and criminal justice reform advocates. Allie Menegakis, a former public defender who founded criminal justice reform group SC4CJR, has been working with arrested protesters to get a clear picture of the scenes that played out. “After speaking with many protestors who were present at Marion Square and after reviewing multiple videos and photos of the police response to the gathering, we believe that the police response was excessive and reckless,” said Menegakis. Pepper balls do not have to be fired at a person to be effective, according to video demos online for similar products. But images and eyewitness accounts show it’s very likely that the projectiles did strike protesters. Several images posted by SC4CJR on Facebook purport to show bruises and abrasions, including some on protesters’ heads. “The use of weapons or physical force by law enforcement in response to nonthreatening actions of citizens should
never be permitted without just cause,” said Menegakis. Frank Knaack, the leader of the American Civil Liberties Union of South Carolina, was in Marion Square for the protest and says the methods used can cause harm, despite being billed as nonlethal. “Despite this fact, our law enforcement thought it was appropriate to use indiscriminately. These are weapons of last resort, not first,” said Knaack. In a statement responding to inquiries by the ACLU about the use of force in Marion Square, Charleston County Sheriff’s Office said: “Deputies will use the reasonable amount of force necessary to safeguard the lives and property of all citizens. That force is used on individuals who act unlawfully or choose to cause harm or damage to law abiding citizens.” Compounding any normal risk from the nonlethal methods, the spread of COVID-19 adds another variable, Knaack said. Tear gas and pepper spray activate pain-sensing nerves, including in mucus membranes of the eyes, nose and mouth. “Law enforcement’s decision to use these weapons would have been unjustifiable even under the best of times, but we are also living in the midst of a respiratory pandemic, and experts have already warned that the use of tear gases threatens to worsen COVID-19,” Knaack said. The sheriff’s office said the county jail that housed arrested protesters had “no active COVID-19 cases” and that safety protocols are being followed, according to their statement last week. —Sam Spence

Charleston protesters just kept marching last week. In the wake of George Floyd’s death, killed by a Minneapolis police officer, Charleston activists have turned out in force to stand in solidarity with protests around the nation. Protesters gathered in Brittlebank Park the afternoon of June 3 for a rally and march. Before the large mass of people moved away from the public space and up Fishburne Street, organizers spoke about the importance of voter registration right now. “Don’t forget to vote for the people that are actually going to be running the police stations, the sheriff, all that stuff,” Cassie Campbell told the group. “Al [Cannon, Sheriff], you got to go, buddy.” The group was also encouraged to support black-owned businesses and boycott businesses that haven’t supported the movement. “We need to stop being at these racist restaurants and entitled restaurants that think they can stay open during the protest, still serve their people during the protest,” Cody Dixon said. One protester discussed the struggles between the police and the black community. “We are targets,” he said. “We are born and raised to think of ourselves as targets against the law that is meant to protect us. That breaks our hearts every day we walk around these streets. That’s what we are fighting for. George Floyd is the tipping point. We are not going back to normal. Normal before was the fucking problem.” In North Charleston on June 4, a crowd of close to 100 marched through Park Circle, one of a handful of different protests organized across Charleston on the same day. Katie Rivera of Hanahan carried a sign bearing the names of people killed in altercations with police. “All of these people were killed by police, and I’m here to get justice for them and do it peacefully,” she said. “How many more?” Esante-Joy McIntyre of North Charleston, was at the rally with Rivera, and both were surprised at the diversity of people in attendance. “People from different communities — gay people, Hispanic people — were out here marching peacefully,” she said. “And the amount of people that were supporting us as we were walking, that was surprising.” It was both 18-year-olds’ first protest event since groups began organizing local rallies on May 30. Maya Green, a graduating senior from Charleston County School of the Arts, had parting words for the department before the crowd dispersed. “Something that’s concrete that police in North Charleston can do is encourage the department to conduct an audit for racial bias,” Green said. North Charleston leaders have been resistant to activists’ requests to conduct an assessment of the department since the calls began after the shooting of Walter Scott by a city officer in 2015. The federal Department of Justice never released its investigation into the incident. The city has assembled a citizen input panel, but groups such as Charleston Area Justice Ministry continue urging the department to do an independent audit. Protests have continued every day around Charleston for 10 days, drawing demonstrators to gatherings from downtown to Walterboro. —Heath Ellison and Sam Spence

We must reject systemic racism and injustice throughout our culture
P
CHARLESTON CITY PAPER 06.10.2020
rotesters marched through the streets of Charleston for several days demanding that our leaders upend the systemic racism at the core of our institutions. It has been a humbling experience to walk alongside them. It is sad and shameful that, as a newspaper, we feel compelled to voice our solidarity with South Carolinians begging for basic human rights long denied to many because of the color of skin. But for the sake of decency, freedom and justice, we must. For carrying signs memorializing people killed in police violence and sharing their support online, our neighbors in Charleston have been met with sneers, cowardly social media messages and general ignorance about their grievances. After hundreds of protesters marched peacefully on Charleston’s streets on the afternoon of May 30, the night turned ugly, seemingly catching police by surprise. Looters hit small areas of downtown hard, breaking glass, stealing and creating havoc. No one died. No buildings burned down, as in other cities. The destruction was contained, but police arrested few. The next day, however, peaceful protesters were met with an overreaction of aggression as police gassed dozens and shot pepper balls at them. More arrests were made of protesters than of the rioters who frightened the city’s elite the night before. Ending excessive, aggressive police force against black and brown people should just be the beginning. City, county and business leaders must demand that the economic,
6
political, social and health care structures now in place stop reinforcing stark racist disparities in our communities. Unjust conditions have been ignored for far too long. Charleston is a city on stolen land built by a stolen people. This is an inescapable truth that should be remembered as our city celebrates its 350th year. Those in power should also realize little has changed in the five years since a white North Charleston police officer killed Walter Scott. Despite many community conversations and convenings after a white supremacist killed nine black churchgoers at Emanuel AME Church, much more work needs to be done as residents cry for change. As a newspaper, our job is to connect peoples’ stories to communities and hope readers understand more about where they live. We feature a diverse array of pictures, news and features throughout our issues. But we, like our whole industry, remain challenged to break our own diversity barriers. Fewer than 14 percent of journalists nationwide are people of color, according to the Poynter Institute. We will continue to tell stories and listen when we are called out for ignorance. To get started and broaden our view, we will reach out through our neighborhoods by July 1 to gather a broad board of advisers to help us improve our coverage. Breaking the historical chains of slavery that extend into modern-day systemic racism is not going to be easy. But we must stand up against the ghosts of the past that continue to haunt Charleston. Otherwise we enable it. All of us must stand up. All of us must listen. Black lives do, in fact, matter.

You're holding the first of two volumes of Best of Charleston 2020, featuring your selections for the all-knowing, all-seeing, omnipotent businesses, people, and personalities in all the land. (Or at least in all of Charleston.) In all seriousness, we know that the past few months have been very difficult for many of you as our lives changed to keep each other healthy. Thousands of people have lost jobs, faced unpaid bills and had to make tough decisions about how to move ahead. We all hope fewer
of those painful moments lie in the weeks ahead. But in our view, that makes this year's Best of Charleston notable — a recognition of what we can all agree (mostly!) on that makes our city a special place to live. So, keep doing what you've been doing in the past few months to help our neighborhood places. And take a look through these pages this week and next and support the winners as you see fit, note the advertisers who make the City Paper's independent journalism possible and join us in celebrating our hometown. Politics, News and the media T
his year is shaping up to be one for the history books, quite literally. The U.S. started the new decade with a standoff with Iran and an impeachment trial in the Senate. COVID-19 shut the country down and caused an economic crisis comparable to the Great Depression. Tensions over systemic racism came to a boiling point as demonstrators took to the streets to protest the death of George Floyd, and subsequent riots emboldened the president to threaten military force against protesters. On top of all that, it’s a contentious election year and we’re not even halfway done. Join us now as we honor (and poke fun at) the people that are leading us to, stumbling through and reporting on the history we’re witnessing.

BEST COUNTY COUNCIL MEMBER Brantley Moody
It seemed like West Ashley kept getting overlooked by Charleston’s leadership, and Brantley Moody was tired of it. He decided to run for County Council, and lo and behold, he got himself elected in 2016. Since then, he says, he’s gotten a lot of work done — roads have been repaved, I-526 is back on track and the West Ashley Revitalization Project is rolling. There’s a lot of focus on West Ashley now, but with all of it going on, Moody can’t seem to stop smiling about I-526. “I think this award is a validation of some of the hard work that’s been going for the last few years,” Moody said. “Getting 526 restarted is something that 75 percent of residents of West Ashley support. That’s a mandate, and I was elected in part to get that done, and that’s what I’m doing.” Keeping his campaign promises is one of the proudest points for Moody and his election team. He says he is looking forward to keeping the ball rolling for West Ashley in the coming years, and the momentum that its community has now will only make things easier for both its residents and leadership. —Skyler Baldwin

When Harve Jacobs started at Channel 2, the reporter at the time promised him he would leave him his contact list, but Jacobs walked in on his first day, and it was gone. That taught him to develop his own sources right away. Since then, Jacobs has been around the block, taking a break from TV news and finding his way back through Channel 5 in 1994, becoming a police reporter once again after a short stint as the medical producer. Finding your way out of a field and then back into it is no small feat, especially with all the technological developments that have changed journalism lately. “I feel pretty blessed about it,” Jacobs said. “The news business has changed so much in the last few years, with social media. Thank goodness I adapted, because I have almost 10,000 followers on Facebook and Twitter.” Now that’s a contact list worth keeping to yourself. Best Charlestonian to Defriend Lindsey Graham
City Paper readers want to defriend U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham so badly that they must have bestowed temporary emergency Charleston citizenship on the gentleman from the Upstate for the purposes of this illustrious honor. Honestly if you haven’t defriended Graham by now, we’re not sure what’s stopping you. Love his jovial banter with Fox News hosts? Looking to increase your flexibility by watching the senior senator bend his way around details of the latest Trump tweet? I guess those are good enough reasons to keep him in your feed. The year 2019 was a victory lap of sorts for Graham, the final full year in office before he and the president face reelection in November 2020. Brooke Ryan on Mix 95.9
When Brooke Ryan returned to Charleston in 2014, she asked herself if people even wanted her back on local radio. Six years later and she knows they did. “When something like this [award] happens, it just makes us feel like, ‘Yes, we’re supposed to be here,’ ” she said. Ryan is one third of the popular morning talk show Two Girls and a Guy. On the program, Ryan discusses life, Charleston and entertainment with her co-hosts and friends Tanya Brown and Mike Edwards. In the last six years, the 2020 Best Radio Personality said she’s learned that, “Above all else, people love local here.” Although the landscape has changed some, Charlestonians still love supporting the local radio stations and music, she said. “My favorite thing, by far, is that I get to wake up every morning and talk to my best friends,” she added. “Tanya and Mike truly are my family, and not only that, the relationships that we forge with our listeners is the same way.” —Heath Ellison

Best Newspaper Columnist Warren Peper
Warren Peper, the longtime Post and Courier slice-of-life columnist, didn’t know his writing would connect so well with Charleston when he joined the paper. After 35-plus years in television reporting, he knew how to get a point across on a screen. But, as a columnist for 10 years and a P&C writer before that, he’s proven many times that he knows how to resonate with readers through words, as well. “Most of my stuff I try to keep as uplifting as possible,” he told the City Paper. Peper often uses the “stuff that’s commonly out there” for heartfelt columns about largely wholesome topics. People in town seem to connect on a human level with his columns, Peper said, such as his recent article about his parents’ struggles with memory loss in their old age. “I’m surprised, humbled and happy in the same breath,” Peper said about the Best Of win. —Heath Ellison

105.5 The Bridge Plenty of people looking to keep in touch with the area keep their dials tuned to 105.5 The Bridge. Local music and longtime Lowcountry radio personalities have maintained the Bridge’s status as a popular radio station. “It’s always great to get the appreciation of the local audience,” general manager Chili Walker said. “It’s a station that’s a little bit different. We play plenty of familiar music, but we also are a station that will step out and play artists that not a lot of others will.” Within the last year, 105.5 brought famed local radio host Richard Todd back on the air, after a seven-year hiatus from radio. In addition, they’ve got James Voigt (aka the Critic) putting out a regular playlist of eclectic artists and local musicians. “I’m hoping to continue to build on the success that was before me and we continue to grow and live up to the title of best radio station,” Walker added. —Heath Ellison

attractions and city living G one are the days when Charleston was a hidden gem. The secret’s out, and we have the city’s beauty and celebrated events like 2020 Best Festival Charleston Wine + Food to thank for it. Many of Charleston’s outdoor attractions are visible from the top of a four story building, and a deeper dive unveils more of the sights that make the Holy City’s aesthetic unparalleled — we’re talking to you, Dock Street Theatre, 2020’s Best Building. There’s also been an increase in job opportunities — shout out to the Medical University of South Carolina, 2020’s Best Place to Work, which employs nearly 20,000 people in the Lowcountry. And city living encompasses more of the Tricounty than ever before with places like Best Neighborhood winner Park Circle and special gatherings like James Island’s Pour House Sunday Brunch, which showcases the fabric of the city with products and food from local vendors. But don’t let us spoil all the fun; without further ado here are City Paper readers’ favorite parts about living in the Holy City.

Charleston Wine + Food Festival 2020 was a record setting year for the Charleston Wine + Food Festival, as 28,000 attendees gathered in the Holy City for an extended weekend filled with tasty bites and beverages. The culinary village was buzzing as usual, but W+F executive director Gillian Zettler was particularly proud of how this year’s programming highlighted everything Charleston has to offer. “We’ve moved from an event that was primarily produced on the peninsula to a festival with events all over the city,” said Zettler, who pointed out several W+F programs that truly honored Charleston’s heritage. Cooking with Conviction, for instance, brought some of the South’s most influential women together at Bertha’s Kitchen. The Soul Stroll highlighted three of the area’s most popular black-owned soul food restaurants, and West Africa to the Lowcountry offered attendees the chance to hear chef BJ Dennis speak about the influence of the African diaspora on Charleston’s culture and cuisine. According to Zettler, these events and others at this year’s festival discussed topics that are “intricate to the fabric of the city.” Although W+F hosts people from all over the world, Zettler said they will continue to focus on what it means to the local community. “I want to see [the festival] be whatever the city needs it to be at that point in time.” —Parker Milner

Best Green Business Vertical Roots
High school friends Andrew Hare and Matt Daniels launched Vertical Roots in 2016 with the goal of delivering local, hydroponically farmed produce to the Southeast region. Four years later, you’ll find their seven lettuce varieties in over 400 stores. The company is growing rapidly, but that doesn’t mean they’re straying from their South Carolina roots. “The grand opening of our office headquarters and new farm off of Clements Ferry [on Daniel Island] was one for the books [this year],” said Hare. “It was awesome to have the Charleston community there to celebrate with us because we couldn’t have reached this incredible milestone without their support.” After donating nearly 300,000 heads of lettuce in 2019, it’s clear the community support goes both ways. By using soil-free container pods, Vertical Roots is proving that delicious lettuce can be grown indoors 365 days a year. If you’re wondering what we mean by “delicious” lettuce, get out to your local Publix or Teeter and grab a package of VR baby romaine or arugula. Celebrated by home cooks and restaurant chefs alike, the commitment to quality never stops at Vertical Roots. That coupled with their local-first mentality makes them a nationally recognized brand Charleston is proud to champion. —Parker Milner

Charleston Farmers Market For anyone who enjoys food, the Charleston Farmers Market is the ideal introduction to the city. Centrally located in Marion Square, the market creates a palpable buzz during weekends from the beginning of April to the end of November. After receiving top honors from City Paper readers in at least one category for the last 10 years, it’s clear that the interaction between the produce stands and food vendors selling hungry visitors breakfast and lunch sets the Charleston Farmers Market apart. By requiring vendors to use locally-sourced ingredients, market manager Harrison Chapman said places like Semilla, Roti Rolls and The Big Egg serve as displays for how the produce can be prepared. “We encourage education about the products, which adds value for the customers,” he said. With nearly 100 rotating farmers, growers, artisans, crafters and food concessionaires, it might take more than one go-round to get the lay of the land. According to Chapman, it’s the experience of perusing the lively market that’s kept it at the top of Charleston’s list of attractions. “The market has been going on for over 30 years now, and the success is a testament to our dedicated vendors and customers.” —Parker Milner

Medical University of South Carolina Not only does the Medical University of South Carolina save lives, but according to our readers, MUSC is a great place to work, too. That might sound like a tough thing to pull off for a place that specializes in the sometimes exhausting medical field, but they make it work. “We try to create an environment where people feel respected, they feel valued and they feel as though they are making a positive contribution to the lives that we have the privilege to serve,” Darrick Paul, MUSC’s chief people officer, said. “We endeavor to treat our staff consistent with the way we want them to treat the patients.” Although there are times when the staff has to face emotional challenges, such as informing patients of illness and trauma, they get to be a part of the healing. “There are people that are in health care that are altruistic individuals,” Paul said. “They really want the best for individuals. They want to make sure that we can put people in good positions.” —Heath Ellison

Southeastern Wildlife Exposition Charleston folks consider it the kickoff of tourist season — every year the Southeastern Wildlife Exposition (SEWE) brings approximately 40,000 loyal visitors to the Holy City. These visitors are so loyal, in fact, that SEWE estimates that three quarters of attendees have already been to the event an average of nine times. The largest event of its kind in the country, SEWE celebrates all things outdoors, from fine art to DockDogs competitions to tasty bites of homegrown meats and grains. The city seems to transform every February, invaded by friendly folks donning hunting jackets, mud-kickin’ boots and down vests. And while the fashion trends are predictable the programming can be surprising: In recent years we’ve been downright delighted by the work of a SEWE artist, Larry Moore, whose paintings are meant to be visual narratives that present a post-apocalyptic world where animals inhabit spaces once held by humans. Nothing against marsh landscapes, but we think Moore’s pieces are a refreshing addition to wildlife conversations. We’ve also enjoyed a recent visit and demonstration from the Search Tactics and Rescue Recovery Team (S.T.A.R.R.), a group of handlers and their cadaver dogs who help law enforcement solve crimes. Dogs are, needless to say, the stars of the SEWE show every year, whether they’re Boykins gathering with a local interest group, Border Collies herding sheep or local labradors strutting their stuff in the daily DockDogs competition. And while the festival is notorious for its fun (hello, rollicking parties) and its economic impact (local and state governments have a net tax impact of about $2.8 million), its dedication to conservation and preservation in South Carolina is what we really love. —Connelly Hardaway

Best House/Cover Band The Midnight City
They didn’t really sneak their way into this category, but the Midnight City is only a cover band sometimes. Granted, playing raucous covers at weddings and parties is where they cut their teeth and became a local favorite. But, back in November, the quartet released their first EP with original material, titled Heartdream. Since then, they’ve slowly incorporated a few of their own songs into their set. “We sprinkle them in when we can,” vocalist and guitarist Brian Jarvis said. “Ultimately, we’re being hired to play the hits and the nostalgia that everybody loves, but the more we’ve been doing it, we have those diehard fans who are like, ‘Play an original.’” During the pandemic, the Midnight City has been working on more acoustic shows to accommodate the smaller capacity many venues are enforcing. “It’s basically all the stuff we do as a full band, but more stripped down,” Jarvis added. “I would much rather play electric, but you roll with the punches.” With roughly 200 songs in the Midnight City’s repertoire, we’re sure they can find some acoustic songs that still get a party started. —Heath Ellison

We the People: Portraits of Veterans in America at City Gallery
28
Last year award-winning watercolor artist and Charleston resident Mary Whyte debuted a collection of portraits, We the People: Portraits of Veterans in America, that she’d been working on for nearly a decade. The series features images of 50 present-day American veterans — one from each state. You’ll find people like a Pennsylvania science teacher, a South Carolina single mom, a Missouri dairy farmer and so many more in this exhibition. The works attempt to answer the question: What is post-service life like for Americans? Medal of Honor recipient Major General James E. Livingston has called the exhibition, “a moving and important tribute to our nation’s greatest patriots.” The exhibition debuted during an eventful weekend last October, with a number of patriotic events including a brunch on the U.S.S. Yorktown, two premiere concerts from the Charleston Symphony Orchestra and the release of an art book from the University of South Carolina; both the CSO and USC are partner organizations with the Patriot Art Foundation, founded by Whyte. Whyte has said of the exhibition: “We The People is not only a tour across and through these vast United States, it is a tour through the heart and soul, the duty and the commitment of the people who protect not only our Constitution and our country but our very lives. We can only be deeply grateful, inspired, and humbled by all of them, and it’s my hope that we the people give rise to a greater sense of gratitude for our military, as well as to inspire people to reach for what is possible.” —Connelly Hardaway

Best Local Actress Olivia Gainey
A rising star in Summerville and beyond, teenage actress Olivia Gainey is one of Best of Charleston’s youngest Best Local Actress winners in recent memories. But she isn’t letting that title get to her head. Gainey says that one of the most important lessons she’s learned in her years of acting is that no actor is an island: “You cannot perform on your own. This goes for taking direction; sometimes you need the outside view of a director to tell you whether or not what you’re doing is convincing. You need those prop masters. You need those light techs. Every person is so important when creating a story.” Last year Gainey starred as Anne Frank in the Flowertown Players’ production of Diary of Anne Frank. In an interview with the Summerville Journal Scene, Gainey said performing in the play gave her a new outlook on life. That powerful play was just one opportunity for Gainey to act in a city that she loves. “I love how mostly everyone knows each other in our theater community and I love our support and respect for one another,” she said. “I love that I’m not limited to one theater to perform at, and I love that I get to work with every age group and every different type of person.” —Connelly Hardaway

Best Female Vocalist Lauren Hall
Born and raised in Charleston, singer-songwriter Lauren Hall is proud of her roots. While she’d eventually like to move to Nashville, right now she’s loving Lowcountry living and she’s proud of this city’s thriving cultural scene. “A lot of people come to enjoy the beauty, history, and food of course, but I love how our town has become so known for the arts as well. We have such a great music scene here and I love being a part of this community,” said Hall. With a sound described as “acoustic-driven,” Hall’s influences include classic country stars like Dolly Parton, Alison Krauss and the Dixie Chicks. She has opened for notable country musicians including Travis Tritt, Tracy Lawrence, Maddie & Tae and LANCO, among others. Hall has been playing gigs since she was just 16 years old, so she knows a thing or two about performing, especially in a wide variety of venues. She said she’s learned the most playing in more intimate settings: “You learn to appreciate that one person who is listening intently, and you perform just for them if that’s your only audience that night.” Whether she’s playing for three people or 3,000 Hall doesn’t let the size of the audience or the stage get to her. “Never let the room or atmosphere make you less of a performer,” she said. You can now listen to Hall’s latest single, “Gone,” which our music editor Heath Ellison described as an “empowering breakup tune fit for the radio.” —Connelly Hardaway

Benny Starr
CHARLESTON CITY PAPER 06.10.2020
Do we even need to explain this one at this point? Since releasing A Water Album in 2019, Starr has become one of the rare examples of a local artist who transcends the music scene. People listened when Starr endorsed Elizabeth Warren for the Democratic Presidential nominee. Citizens took note when he dropped out of TEDx 2019, calling the organization out for a racist comment made by a speech coach and what he perceived as censorship behind the scenes. Avery Research Center even dedicated an exhibit to A Water Album when they reopened earlier this year. And, even if none of those things happened, Starr would still be one of the sharpest rappers in the Lowcountry. Lately, Starr has been collaborating with keyboardist and producer Rodrick Cliche for a new project, Native Son, which continues Starr’s tradition of facing racial and social justice issues in music. —Heath Ellison

Dorothea Benton Frank (1951-2019) Charleston’s beloved local author, Dorothea “Dot” Benton Frank, passed away last year after a brief illness. Her passing came as a shock and major loss to the Lowcountry, whose readers have voraciously read her NYT bestsellers since her debut novel, aptly titled Sullivan’s Island. A native of the island, Frank split her time between Sullivan’s and New York in her final years. Since that first novel, Frank was prolific, writing over 18 books that the late author Pat Conroy described as “funny, sexy, and usually damp with sea water.” Frank and her books were so beloved that her fans held a fan fest last spring, featuring events from a downtown Charleston walking tour to a jazz cruise on the Charleston Harbor. Last month Frank fans got one final taste of the author’s writing with the release of Teddy Spaghetti, a kid’s book co-written with Frank’s daughter, Victoria Benton Frank. Victoria told the City Paper: “We are thrilled that our beloved wife and mother has been chosen for best local author. Thank you for all of your support. We miss her like crazy.” —Connelly Hardaway

Coast Records is one of the most popular studios in the area, producing singles and full albums for artists, sometimes before they’ve really broken into the scene. In recent years, producer and founder Matt Zutell has nabbed several notable wins (co-producing Stand Up!, mixing A Water Album), but he also gave sudden exposure to some newbies with a lot of potential like Veja Du and Never Better. Lately, the studio has been working with Doom Flamingo, Easy Honey, Beach Tiger and Jermaine Holmes. “I’ve got a few projects that we started before quarantine,” Zutell said about the future. “Now that things are starting to be OK to open up, I’m going to start finishing those in a way that’s safe and makes sense.” Recently, the studio moved to a bigger space, indicating Coast Records isn’t slowing down for a second. “I’ve been in Charleston for 10 years now, working with people and trying to build the studio for a while now,” he said. “At this point, it’s about making relationships with people and trying to stay relevant, and continuing to get better and grow.” —Heath Ellison

Terrace Theater
From the point-of-view of a movie nerd, the coronavirus pandemic has been a rough ride. Us film lovers have not been able to see a movie in a darkened room illuminated solely by visuals on a large screen. Still, it’s been nowhere near as rough as it’s been for movie theater owners and employees. Despite it all, Charleston’s own Terrace Theater came through and made the most of the uncertainty by hosting movie rentals on their website and turning part of their parking lot into the Terrace Drive-In. We were treated to such classics as Space Jam, Willy Wonka And The Chocolate Factory and personal favorites, a Corey Feldman double feature consisting of The Goonies and The Lost Boys and a Steven Spielberg E.T./ Jurassic Park double feature. And that’s just the Terrace coming through during a pandemic — the theater was voted best local theater for how great it is during normal times. Owner Paul Brown credits his team with helping the theater thrive. “I think it’s because of our staff and loyal patrons. The key to solid recovery starts with the foundation of a good loyal staff and customer base, both of whom know that we are a responsible, reliable and trustworthy business,” said Brown. —Kevin Young
Best Place to see Local Music Pour House
2020’s been a tough year for live music. Venues were shut down, musicians resorted to livestreams hoping to recreate that concert atmosphere and the local music industry took a whalop in the wallet. We suppose it’s only fitting that the reader-elected Best Place to see Local Music was also the first noteworthy music venue to reopen for live shows during the pandemic. While it’s not at the grand scale of some of the indoor shows, which have also been a place to see great touring acts, the Pour House’s humble outdoor deck will still satisfy those live music cravings. Owners Alex and Vanessa Harris are frequently praised for creating an important stage for local artists, giving them the opportunity to perform alongside bigger travelling bands. While awaiting the opportunity to reopen, the Pour House satiated some live music itches with previously recorded shows from years prior and a theatrical two-night livestream from Doom Flamingo. —Heath Ellison

Best Local Podcast Best For Business
The local Best for Business podcast will be an outlier in your podcast feed. The show is not too long, but not short either; has great audio quality, but not overly produced; and features great local guests, many of whom you have not heard from before. Every other week, Dan Anderson and Patch Whisky bring on movers and shakers in the local arts and creative scenes for interviews and discussions about Charleston culture and what makes it special. The show is usually one-half personal interview by Anderson and one-half zany, off-the-wall Q&A by Patch. I got to sit down with the Best for Business guys last September. They pulled a fast one on me when I asked to talk with them about our podcast issue, demanding an interview of their own. Even after having listened to a few episodes, I still had no idea what to expect. But the dudes know how to set the stage for a friendly talk between a few people who just met each other — managing to touch on everything from the lifesize John Wayne cutout in my childhood bedroom to stories of Ric Flair’s appearances at my high school pep rallies. Well, the shots helped too. —Sam Spence
AUDIO SOUND SOLUTIONS It’s hard to go too far in Charleston and not see Patch Whisky’s massive, colorful mural work. From the wall outside his longtime Park Circle workshop to the Charleston Bus that bops around the area, you can’t miss Patch Whisky’s mischievous monsters. (And don’t miss him on the Best for Business podcast with his buddy Dan.) Patch may be ubiquitous around the Holy City, but he’s in demand nationwide too. So, next time you’re traveling, keep an eye out for Patch’s monsters. They’ll surely be up to no good. —Sam Spence

Best Bookstore Blue Bicycle Books
Twenty-five years after opening, King Street’s Blue Bicycle Books (BBB) finally takes home the prize for Best of Charleston’s Best Bookstore. (And we can’t believe it’s taken that long!) BBB is more than a bookstore, serving as a community gathering place for talks, podcast recordings and an annual, super popular Young Adult book festival, YALLFest. And BBB is as hyper local as you want your local bookstore to be. “Our store is very uniquely suited to Charleston and me and my staff,” said owner Johnathan Sanchez. A realistic business owner, Sanchez is not in the business of pushing customers to buy local just because it’s the right thing to do. Of course he wants customers to flock to his store; being local helps, but Sanchez also wants BBB to offer a really great experience. He compares the various processes of picking out books these days: You can download one on your Kindle or you can buy one on Amazon, delivered shiny and new to your doorstep. “But it’s not quite the same as finding a used copy, the version with that desperate embrace and the lush coloring and that NYRB blurb,” said Sanchez. The great bookstores, in Sanchez’s mind, don’t have to work too hard to lure customers in: “they don’t need to sell you on why you should buy from them; they attract people, they’re sexy.” —Connelly Hardaway

www.carolinaone.com
Co-owned by Liz Martin and Mimi Striplin, Cannonborough Collective is the chicest boutique you’ll find in downtown Charleston, chock-full of goodies from a wide variety of local vendors. Located on the corner of Cannon and St. Philip streets, Cannonborough Collective is a neighborhood spot through and through, often participating in block parties and vendor strolls with other local businesses in the area. And it doesn’t get the title of best gift store for nothing: Inside you can find everything from balloons (the store boasts the city’s only “balloon bar”) to stationery to baby clothes — the list goes on and on. For Martin, Cannonborough Collective is everything she looks for in stores in places she visits: “Getting to have a shop in this city I love so much allows me to offer both locals and visitors a little taste of the thing I love so much about exploring a city and finding that special spot I can get lost in for far too long.” Martin admits that half the battle of owning a local business is showing up, day after day. Cannonborough Collective has been nestled on its cozy street corner for three years now, and Striplin credits the Collective’s staying power with the support of the local community. “Running a retail shop has its ups and downs,” said Striplin. “But I’ve learned through it all, if we’re able to truly support one another, whether sharing a social media post, shopping or cheering on a new or existing local brand, we all grow together.” —Connelly Hardaway

Best CBD Store CBD (cannabidiol), is the second most prevalent of the active ingredients in cannabis. It is derived directly from the hemp plant and is said to help people who struggle with insomnia, anxiety and chronic pain. CBD can be smoked; it can be taken orally as an oil tincture, capsule or gummy, and it can be applied topically as a salve. And you can find all of the above at Charleston’s I Heart CBD. While the CBD craze may seem new to some people, the folks at I Heart CBD have been in the industry for over five years, so they have loads of information under their belts. And they want consumers to have access to that information, too: “Even if you walk out of our store without a purchase, you’ll know more about what CBD actually does for you.” I Heart CBD’s staff is trained to handle the wide variety of questions that consumers will have and they’re here to help you find the best possible option for soothing ailments or finding some relief in the form of a CBD product. Whether you’re taking tinctures to help with insomnia, or applying salves to ease sore joints, there’s likely a CBD product that’s perfect for you — and I Heart CBD is the place to go to find it. —Connelly Hardaway

BEST BRIDAL STORE IN CHARLESTON!
Erika Lynn Studio and Boutique, Erika Lynn McKelvey
Savannah College of Art and Design graduate (and Charleston native) Erika Lynn McKelvey first fell in love with custom leather sandals during a summer in Southern Italy. After watching different shoemakers create custom sandals, McKelvey decided she could follow in their footsteps, so to speak. You can shop McKelvey’s custom sandals, clutches, totebags, jewelry and more in her Mount Pleasant store, Erika Lynn Studio and Boutique. McKelvey’s studio is located in the store so she can meet and greet customers. “The local community is important to me as it is the backbone of my business,” said McKelvey. Like most local businesses and organizations, the coronavirus pandemic hit McKelvey’s business hard, but she learned to adapt, using her studio and machinery to provide 5,000 free comfort clips for masks for health care workers on the frontlines. McKelvey wants to support local businesses, too, which is why she carries products — from jewelry to chocolate to honey — from local vendors in her boutique. She said: “Now, more than ever, we need to support our small local business community.” —Connelly Hardaway

WHERE BRIGHT IDEAS COME TO LIGHT
With a Facebook page full of photos that could have come out of the most prestigious antique magazine out there, it’s no wonder people feel like they are stepping into a different reality when walking into Mount Pleasant Mall. The whole experience of scrolling through their social media alone brings back memories of catalog shopping and finding those hidden gems in a page packed with pictures. But, walking inside is a different story altogether. Featuring over 25,000 square feet of pre-owned furniture, antiques and more, Mount Pleasant Mall is Charleston’s largest resale co-op mall, featuring goods from over 135 individual businesses. Each of those businesses has their own little home inside the larger mall area, letting them all feel independent and unique. Of course, that means, anyone wanting to come and shop, especially those that like to walk up and down every aisle of the grocery store, should probably set aside a good chunk of the day, because once you walk through the doors, you won’t want to leave for a long time. —Skyler Baldwin

The Scratch Pad
THANK YOU CHARLESTON FOR VOTING US
BEST LANDSCAPER!
You can get in touch with folks at The Scratch Pad with all the standard, modern forms of instant communication, but it feels like a terrible oversight to not reach out to them with a kind, hand written letter. There’s just something about writing with the perfect pen on nice heavy paper. From stationery and special event decorations to that perfect home accessory for your next gathering with friends, The Scratch Pad has you covered. The Scratch Pad also has everything you need for those seasonal touches at home too. Of course, that just-right decor would not be perfect without a little Southern touch to look suitably natural in your Lowcountry home — think pineapples, shells and other seascapes. The Scratch Pad is also a great place to find gifts for that impossible-to-buy-for friend or relative. What are you waiting for, an invitation? (They have those too.)—Sam Spence

hen your washing machine quits on you or your car keeps making that funny noise that makes your passengers nervous (I know my car, dad), help is always a phone call away. Luckily for those who’ve ever had trouble picking one electrician over another, the City Paper is here once again to help sift through that long list of numbers to find the one you need to call when you have a flat tire (Gerald’s) or when the next big hurricane leaves your roof a little worse for wear (Charleston Roofs and Windows). So, sit back and strap in because we are going through everything from the best dry cleaner (Lyerly’s) to the best party bus company (Charleston Black Cab).

Best Dry Cleaner Lyerly’s Cleaners
Lyerly’s Cleaners has been serving the Lowcountry for nearly 90 years, so it’s safe to say Will and Sarah Horton had big shoes to fill when they took over the business earlier this year. They’ve met the challenge head on, helping Lyerly’s take top honors as the Best Dry Cleaner. As a kid growing up on Isle of Palms, Will’s dream was to own a small business in Charleston. After meeting in Asheville, the Hortons returned to Charleston and got into the dry cleaning business in August 2018 before eventually taking over Lyerly’s at the start of 2020. “The Lowcountry has had its own sense of magnificent style for over 300 years,” Sarah said. “Lyerly’s has been keeping that style fresh for 88 of those years and we are so proud to be recognized.” Locals can drop off their dry cleaning, household items and formal wear at one of seven Charleston-area Lyerly’s locations, most of which offer drive-thru services. But Lyerly’s is more than just an efficient place to get your clothes cleaned and pressed; they’re also using environmentally friendly products and focusing on specific customer requests. —Parker Milner

Cactus Car Wash
Cactus Car Wash proudly boasts on their social media that they’ve been the best car wash in Charleston for 13 years. As of print, that claim is wrong because they’re considered the best for 14 years. Cactus Car Wash continues their hot streak thanks to locations in North Charleston, West Ashley and Mount Pleasant, giving locals plenty of opportunities to keep their vehicle sparkling. While most car washes provide an exterior soak and scrub in a drivethru, Cactus gives customers the choice of a deeper clean inside the vehicle. Patrons get the chance to relax in Cactus’ lounge area while experts handle the cleaning. Cactus was founded in Charleston in 1996, and although they’ve expanded to Georgia, they remain a local favorite. —Heath Ellison

GREYSTAR
Greystar was founded in 1993 right here in Charleston. Founder, chairman and CEO Bob Faith set out to build what he envisioned would be the rental housing industry leader — a self-described blue-chip company that would operate with the highest integrity and character. Over time, Greystar has proved that not only was this need real, but that they would be the ones to meet it. They have learned what’s important to people when it comes to a place to call home, and continue to strive to provide innovative services that enhance people’s living experiences beyond simply providing a place to live. “It is incredible to see our team members and our residents come together to create a strong sense of community involvement not just at our apartment communities, but through various forms of community outreach throughout the Charleston area,” Greystar said in a statement. Greystar quickly expanded, going international in 2013 by expanding into Mexico and the United Kingdom and winning global recognition and multiple awards including “Global Residential Investor of the Year,” “Global Alternatives Investor of the Year” and “Industry Figure of the Year, North America.” —Skyler Baldwin

Peter & Sons Shoe Repair
(843) 277-2431 • SaraTurnerLaw.com
Locally owned and operated, Peter and Sons Shoe Repair has been helping residents mend their footwear and most leather goods for 40 years. “We truly appreciate the people that come through the door,” said manager Susan Sacco. One of Peter and Sons’ most notable aspects is their familial atmosphere. Sacco, the third generation in the family to watch over the store, saw her father, uncle and grandfather work at the shoe repair business. Even as they grew past the original team, adding in more employees over the last few years, they still keep the family close. Peter and Sons Shoe Repair has won Best Shoe Repair Store several times and Sacco believes it comes down to quality, in addition to the way they treat customers. “Our work speaks for our reputation,” she said. —Heath Ellison

ARIES (March 21-April 19): During her 90 years on the planet, actor and singer Marlene Dietrich reinvented herself numerous times. She had superb insight into the nature of shifting rhythms, and a knack for gauging the right moment to adapt and transform. Good timing, she said, came naturally to people like her, as well as for “aerialists, jugglers, diplomats, publicists, generals, prize-fighters, revolutionists, financiers, and lovers.” I would add one further category to her list: the Aries tribe. Make maximum use of your talent in the coming weeks. TAURUS (April 20-May 20): Author and theologian Frederick Buechner writes, “There is treasure buried in the field of every one of our days, even the bleakest or dullest, and it is our business to keep our eyes peeled for it.” In alignment with current astrological potentials, Taurus, I’ll name that as your key theme. More than usual, breakthroughs and revelations and catalysts are likely to be available to you in the midst of the daily slog — even when you’re feeling bored. Make it your business to be on high alert for them. GEMINI (May 21-June 20): According to novelist Octavia E. Butler, “Positive obsession is about not being able to stop just because you’re afraid and full of doubts.” That’s what I wish for you in the coming weeks, Gemini: positive obsession. It’s also what I expect! My analysis of the astrological omens suggests that you will have the pluck and craftiness necessary to veer away from murky, disturbing versions of obsession. Instead, you’ll embrace the exhilarating kind of obsession that buoys your spirit in moments of uncertainty. I foresee you making progress on your most important labor of love. CANCER (June 21-July 22): William Thomson, also known as Lord Kelvin (1824–1907), was a Cancerian physicist and mathematician who contributed to the understanding of thermodynamics and other areas of scientific and engineering knowledge. Despite his considerable intelligence, however, he was myopic about the possibility that humans might one day fly through the air while seated inside of machines. In a 1902 interview — a year before the Wright Brothers’ breakthrough experiment — he declared, “No aeroplane will ever be successful.” I suspect you could be on the verge of passing through a Lord Kelvin phase, Cancerian. You may at times be highly insightful and at other times curiously mistaken. So I urge you to be humbly confident and confidently humble! LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Author Marianne Williamson tells us, “Spiritual growth involves giving up the stories of your past so the universe can write a new one.” And what exactly does it mean to “give up the stories of your past”? Here’s what I think: 1. Don’t assume that experiences you’ve had before will be repeated in the future. 2. Don’t assume that your ideas about the nature of your destiny will always be true. 3. Even good things that have happened before may be small and limited compared to the good things that could happen for you in the years to come. 4. Fully embrace the truth that the inherent nature of existence is endless transformation — which is why it’s right and natural for you to ceaselessly outgrow the old plot lines of your life story and embrace new ones. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Philosopher and astrologer Marsilio Ficino wrote, “Mortals ask God for good things every day, but they never pray that they may make good use of them.” I hope that in the coming weeks, you Virgos will disprove that cynical view of human beings. As I see it, you will be more likely than usual to actually receive the blessings you ask for. And I hope — in fact, I predict — that when you receive the blessings, you will then aggressively seek the help of God or Life or your deepest wisdom to make good use of them. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): I was hiking under a blue sky in a favorite natural location: the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, just north of San Francisco, where sublime vistas provide views of ocean and mountain. Although I was in a good mood, at one point I spied empty Budweiser cans amidst the wild jewelflowers. “What kind of nature-hater was so careless as to despoil this

wonderland”? I fumed. For a few moments I was consumed with rage and forgot where I was. By the time I recovered my bearings, the bobcat and redtailed hawk I’d previously been observing had disappeared. That made me sad. My anger was justified but wasteful, irrelevant, and distracting. It caused me to lose touch with some glorious beauty. Don’t be like me in the coming days, Libra. Keep your eyes on the prize. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): “I have more memories than if I were a thousand years old,” wrote poet Charles Baudelaire. Was he bragging or complaining? Did the weight of his past feel like a burden or did it exhilarate him and dynamize his creative powers? I’m hoping that in the coming weeks your explorations of your past will feel far more like the latter — a gift and blessing that helps you understand aspects of your history that have always been mysterious or murky. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): According to my analysis of the astrological omens, you’re primed to navigate your way through a sweetly gritty, tenderly transformative, epically meaningful turning point in the history of your relationship with your favorite collaborator or collaborators. If that sounds too intense, you could at least accomplish an interesting, stimulating, educational shift in the way you fit together with your best ally or allies. It’s up to you, Sagittarius. How much love and intimacy and synergy can you handle? I won’t judge you harshly if you’d prefer to seek the milder version of deepening right now. Besides, you’ll probably get a chance to go further later this year. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Actor Emma Thompson tells us, “I wish I wouldn’t have to say this, but I really like human beings who have suffered. They’re kinder.” Adding to what she observes, I’ll say that for many people, their suffering has also made them smarter and more soulful and more compassionate. Not always, but often, it’s the pain they’ve suffered that has helped turn them into thoughtful companions who know how to nourish others. I urge you to make a special point to converse with people like this in the near future. In my estimation, you will benefit from intense doses of empathetic nurturing. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Lake Elsinore is a city in southwestern California. Last spring, torrential rains there caused a “superbloom” of poppies. Millions of the golden-orange wildflowers covered many acres of Walker Canyon. They attracted another outbreak of beauty: thousands of painted lady butterflies, which came to visit. The magnificent explosion was so vast, it was visible from a satellite high above the earth. I wouldn’t be surprised if you’re experiencing a metaphorical superbloom of your own right now, Aquarius. I hope you will find constructive ways to channel that gorgeous fertility. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): Lucumi is an AfroAmerican religion with Yoruban roots. Its practitioners worship their ancestors, and seek regular contact and communion with them. According to Lucumi priestess Luisah Teish, “Sometimes the ancestors deem certain information so important that they send it to the subconscious mind without being consciously asked.” It’s my belief that all of us, whether or not we’re members of the Lucumi religion, can be in touch with the spirits of our ancestors if we would like to be — and receive useful guidance and insight from them. The coming weeks will be a time when you Pisceans are especially likely to enjoy this breakthrough. It’s more likely to happen if you have an intention to instigate it, but it may come to pass even if you don’t seek it. Homework: This devastating moment in history has the redemptive effect of calling forth our deepest longings to care for each other. Do you agree? RealAstrology.com
