STATE HESITANT TO MANDATE MASKS, DISTANCING DESPITE SURGE
“Today’s protests are sustained and growing because of the larger inequities that have plagued our society since this nation’s founding.” —U.S. Rep. RUNOFFS SET IN CHARLESTON COUNTY RACES
4
Five contested primaries in Charleston-area districts will go to a head-to-head runoff on June 23. With over 717,000 votes cast statewide, more than 66,000 voters stacked in long lines across Charleston on June 9. That total accounted for about 22 percent of county voters, with record absentee voting numbers expected due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The next time most voters see these candidates on ballots will be in November, when turnout will likely be high once again for the presidential election. U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham handily fended off three challengers, setting up a showdown with Jaime Harrison in November. Among the first to congratulate Graham on his victory was the Lindsey Must Go PAC created to raise money against him. In the four-way race for the GOP nomination in the 1st Congressional District, state Rep. Nancy Mace pulled off an impressive outright victory, earning 57 percent of the vote. She will face U.S. Rep. Joe Cunningham. With two Charleston County Council seats up for grabs, it looks like Democrats Rob Wehrman and Jesse Williams will go to a runoff in District 3. With Democrat Kylon Middleton clinching the District 6 nomination, he’ll face Republican Darryl Ray Griffin in November. District 7 incumbent Brantley Moody won his GOP primary without issue. Replacing Mace in S.C. House District 99, Republicans Mark Smith and David Herndon will head to a runoff to see who will take on Democratic nominee Jen Gibson. In the District 109 Democratic primary, James Johnson will head into a runoff against Deon Tedder. The three-way Democratic race for House District 115 finished close, with all candidates earning at least 28 percent support, but Carol Tempel looks headed to a runoff against Spencer Wetmore. Republican Josh Stokes defeated Kathleen Wilson to set up that general election matchup. The polls will be open 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. on June 23. You can request an absentee ballot until Friday. Visit scvotes.org for info. Tuesday’s primaries also included several incumbent victories and newcomers. For full results, visit charlestoncitypaper.com/news. —Sam Spence

BLACK CofC GRADS PUSH FOR MORE INCLUSIVE CAMPUS AND ALUMNI OUTREACH
As a College of Charleston student, Kimberly Ohanuka remembers being turned away when she planned events that appealed to black students at the school. As an alumni, she says she’s been met with similar rejection from the College. On June 11, Ohanuka and other black College of Charleston graduates gathered online to make their case to President Andrew Hsu for how to improve on-campus race relations. The lack of diversity among the student body has long been an issue at CofC, where the campus population at the public university is less than 8 percent black, according to Princeton Review. Organizers say they will deliver a recording of the call to Hsu, who started at CofC a year ago. (People wishing to participate should email cofcblackalumni@gmail.com.) “The president plans to listen and hopes to come away with a better understanding of the concerns and questions our black alumni have, so that he can work with them to address these issues,” CofC spokesman Mike Robertson told the City Paper before the meeting. Since graduating in 2014, Ohanuka said she’s tried to do what she can to help amplify the school’s outreach to black alumni without much success. But her most recent frustrations have come up after she said she had comments deleted and was blocked from a university social media account. At least one other person has claimed similar experiences. “I love CofC. I am very proud of where I came from, I worked very hard at CofC,” said Ohanuka who now works as an attorney. “I would not be going this hard if I did not care about CofC because there are many people who have given up on CofC and do not care whatsoever.” Robertson said the College is investigating the claims of negative interactions on social media. —Sam Spence

A doubling in reported daily coronavirus infections in South Carolina has public health experts on alert but tough action from Columbia is unlikely. The S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) announced Sunday a record daily high of 799 new COVID-19 cases, following days of increased numbers. As of June 15, 18,795 cases have been confirmed in the state since mid-March, with 600 deaths linked to the coronavirus. DHEC currently projects 2,379 COVID-19 deaths by Oct. 1. Gov. Henry McMaster said June 10 he would not shutter businesses again or mandate wearing masks, citing the economy and enforcement issues. “Freedom works only if there is personal responsibility,” said Senate Majority Leader Shane Massey of Edgefield. “People are going to have to take more responsible actions to protect themselves and other people.” The legislature plans to meet June 24 in a two-day special session to address $1.9 billion in federal coronavirus relief aid, but no further action is expected. Meanwhile, the session could draw bigger crowds than usual given the ongoing national protests on racial inequity. Last week, Charleston Democratic Rep. Marvin Pendarvis said protesters should bring their concerns directly to the Statehouse during the session. Experts say the recent uptick in cases comes from a combination of factors, including reopening the economy, individuals gathering in crowds again and increased testing. Clemson Public Health Sciences professor Lior Rennert said he wouldn’t call the spike in cases a “second wave.” “Here, the cases never really dropped,” Rennert said. “We flattened the curve a little bit and then we relaxed social distancing measures and then they spiked.” ‘Everything is going to be shut down anyway’ Last week’s leap in cases in South Carolina could be just the beginning of a surge in cases, and like a preemptive work-orhome order, it could have dire economic consequences. Rennert said a spike means sick workers unable to work, and the potential for an overloaded hospital system. “If cases increase too fast, everything is going to be shut down anyway,” he said. Around the state, most counties with acute-care hospital beds are reporting more than 70 percent of beds in use. “We can be at overcapacity very fast. It’s a very infectious disease. People get it a whole lot faster than people recover from it,” Rennert said. But MUSC microbiology professor Michael Schmidt said he is confident of hospitals’ ability to handle a surge in cases. “We’ve added many more beds than we previously had,” he said. “We’re better prepared for the second surge.” Experts say use masks, maintain distances Dr. Brannon Traxler, a DHEC physician consultant, said Monday that whether the state will witness a huge, continued surge relies on individuals. “A lot of it will depend on everybody’s action and whether they follow the recommendation on social distancing and masks,” she said. Schmidt said the state’s reopening has made some people complacent. “We’re as susceptible as we were in February,” Schmidt said. “We’re not out of the woods because we stayed home. Now we’re going into the woods again.” Businesses should enforce social distancing and have a mask policy for employees and customers, Rennert said, adding that there are fewer barriers now to access testing. The state also should begin random sampling of neighborhoods to understand how much of the population has already been exposed, Schmidt said. According to DHEC, the agency is working with other agencies to study populations and how prevalent antibodies are in the community. —Lindsay Street

The Blotter is taken from reports filed with Charleston Police Department between May 26 and June 1. No one described in this section has been found guilty, just unlucky. Police responded to a neighborly dispute on a Tuesday, during which the complainant told officers that his neighbor has been regularly trespassing on his property for several years by walking through his easement to take her trash out. When officers asked her to maybe move her garbage can about 10 feet to the left, to avoid her neighbor’s property, she said “No, because that means he wins.” In a beautiful twist of irony, a protester called the police on a woman yelling at protesters and brandishing a firearm at them in a public area. The protester gave a picture of the offender and their license plate to CPD, which is investigating.
473 Savannah Hwy • West Ashley
Officers pulled over a man for reckless driving on a busy West Ashley road. The offender was acting erratically, probably because of the ecstasy he admitted to taking. But he said he takes it regularly, so he’s all good.
Police were notified after a juvenile attempted to purchase an Xbox gaming system through Craigslist. When the seller later arrived, the boy handed him $120, and in return was given a backpack full of cookbooks. Look, if anything this man is doing the kid a favor — cooking is a much more practical hobby anyway. A total of 59 marijuana seeds were found during a probable cause search of a vehicle on Folly Road. Officers asked the soonto-be gardener if she had any marijuana in the car. She said she didn’t, which is technically true. If they came back in a few weeks, it might be a different story. One woman lit a cigarette after a patrolling officer pulled her over, in an attempt to mask the smell of all the alcohol she had been drinking. Unfortunately for her, some of these CPD officers have the noses of bloodhounds, and she was arrested for driving under the influence.
A Charleston woman reportedly sent $9,500 in gift cards to a strange man with whom she had a “romantic relationship” with over Facebook. The man told her that he had been fired from the International Red Cross and needed money in the form of Nike and American Express gift cards. Red flags included: the two never having met in person, the profile having only one friend (her) and the profile only having one picture. When police found a man lying on the ground with no shirt, no shoes and with his pants unbuttoned, surrounded by about a dozen empty beer cans, the obvious question to be answered was “How much have you had to drink?” Luckily for them, the man was just conscious enough to answer, “Too much.” A downtown restaurant patron reportedly had a little too much to drink and started getting unruly with people outside the establishment, eventually pulling down his pants and exposing his buttocks to those on the sidewalk. We love a good, old-fashioned mooning. It’s the little things you have to hold on to nowadays.

Shameful Lack of Progress
PUBLISHER
Five years after Emanuel, get to work on five things
EDITORIAL
F
CHARLESTON CITY PAPER 06.17.2020
ive years ago, the course of history for Charleston and the rest of the state changed irreversibly when a violent, homegrown terrorist murdered worshippers at Emanuel AME Church. Nine people died. Dozens more were directly impacted. But looking back at what our leaders have done in response, you might think nothing much happened at all. For the most part, our state legislature still struggles to make progress on issues on which they’ve failed for decades. There have been big new ideas and commonsense proposals, but little action. Everyone in power should be ashamed. Yes, after years of debate, the Confederate flag finally was moved off the Statehouse grounds. But in a state with persistent racial inequalities, a struggling education system and huge health care gaps, there’s so much more to be done. Here are five actions leaders in Columbia can take to move our state forward. Fix the Charleston loophole. Gun law reform is so treacherous for Republicans in South Carolina that even the flawed state law that allowed the Emanuel killer to buy a gun before his background check cleared remains untouched. Repeal the Heritage Act. Stop preventing the removal of Confederate statues and memorials. Local communities, through home rule, should be able to take down homages to the lost cause of the Confederacy more than 150 years after the war ended. Not only do the

statues represent public memorials to the preservation of slavery, the act itself shamefully enshrines Confederate protection into state law. Fix the education funding formula. Lawmakers have kicked the can for so long on education that the pandemic put off action for at least another year. But as soon as modest reforms are passed, we have to revisit the funding formula that has created a dysfunctional, dis-integrated education system in our state. It’s past time to make progress. Pass a state hate crimes law. In a state that is one of four that treats hate-motivated violence the same as any other crime, it should come as no surprise that a South Carolinian perpetrated the Emanuel killings. With hate crimes on the rise in South Carolina, according to the FBI, the state should stand against those who try to divide us with deep-seeded prejudice and violence. Commit to equality. The five years since Emanuel laid bare stark socioeconomic inequalities across the state. Local, community and state leaders should seek equality in all of their work from public policy discussions to common everyday interactions. Charleston will never be the same after June 17, 2015. A handful of gardens, markers, signs and murals remind those who don’t remember the emotion and pain felt in the days after nine senseless deaths. A suitable legacy, even five years later, would be real and substantive changes by Statehouse colleagues of one of the tragedy’s victims, the late Sen. Clementa Pinckney.

recreation, health and beauty
I
t should go without saying that our beautiful city is chock-full of stellar options for healthy recreational activities. Whether you’re working out at a local barre or cycling studio or getting trained by the strongest woman in town (hello Best Personal Trainer, Kelly Sekulovski) the world really is your oyster. Speaking of sea life, you can get your aquatic fix with Charleston’s Best Stand Up Paddleboard Company (Coastal Expeditions) or Best Dive Shop (Charleston Scuba). Let’s not forget those other important businesses that fall under the category of Rec, Health & Beauty like the docs looking out for your peepers (Best Eye Doctor, Draisin Vision Group’s Dr. Elyse DeWitt) or the folks making sure you keep that Charleston glow all year long (Best Tanning Salon, Charleston Glow). Whether you need your nails done or your beach gear restocked, we’ve got the spots for you.

Charleston Community Acupuncture Chad Houfek at Charleston Community Acupuncture (CCA) understands the importance of community. In fact, as he puts it, community is “quite literally the premise” upon which he built Charleston Community Acupuncture (the name kind of gives it away, no?) Charleston Community Acupuncture has been focused on making holistic wellness and acupuncture affordable to all people for the past 11 years — and if their BOC win is any indication, they’ve succeeded. One of the ways CCA makes their services so accessible is by offering a sliding pay scale so that customers can pay what they can afford. “We do what we do because we believe acupuncture and herbal medicine are essential medicines that everyone should have access to,” said Houfek. Intimidated by the prospect of acupuncture (and all those tiny needles)? Fear not, CCA has you covered with a first time consultation and treatment session to answer all your questions (and it’s just $40). It’s just another day in the life at CCA. Houfek said: “Being a local small business owner is of course challenging, but since day one we have been met with so much support and loyalty, and being a local business in this time is so important to us.” —Connelly Hardaway

8-TIME BEST OF WINNER ACCEPTING NEW PATIENTS 1509 FOLLY RD. JAMES ISLAND 843.795.7574
After seven years of professional hockey, four of which were with the South Carolina Stingrays, I decided to retire in March. As the new City Paper cuisine editor, it’s of course surreal to be named Best Local Athlete. I started playing hockey 25 years ago, and since, it’s taken me all over the world. From Boston to California to Australia, I’ve truly been everywhere, but I made my final and most important stop in 2016. Coming to Charleston completely changed my life, and my time with the Stingrays allowed me to play the game I love in a place that immediately felt like home. I would be hard pressed to sum up my time with the Stingrays in anything less than a short nonfiction, but thinking back to each game I played this season, I remember the rare feeling that comes with athletic competition. You’re so fully in the moment that all other concerns are pushed aside. This season, the 25 teammates I shared these moments with made each win, loss, save and goal that much more memorable. My four years with the South Carolina Stingrays and hockey career as a whole were truly a dream come true. Thank you City Paper readers for one last memory. —Parker Milner

Best Local Pharmacy Pitt Street Pharmacy
Some things change over time, it’s inevitable. But others somehow defy time itself, locking themselves in a simpler and maybe even friendlier time. Pitt Street Pharmacy is one of those places. Situated in what was once the heart and soul of Mount Pleasant, Pitt Street Pharmacy is more than a place for folks to run and grab an aspirin. “The whole focus is on customer service, and of course you hear it all the time, but we really care about our patients,” said Roz Adams, who wears many hats at the pharmacy. “A lot of our time is spent on our patients — we don’t just hand out prescriptions. We are a 98 percent compounding pharmacy, that means that we make individualised medications. We do very little regular pharmaceutical drugs, we make all of ours.” The old-fashioned soda fountain keeps memories alive in longtime members of the community and forges new ones in others, and as long as Adams has something to say about it, health insurance and pharmaceutical companies won’t get a stranglehold on either of their health care. —Skyler Baldwin

“Being a local service, having a great relationship with the community is everything to my business,” said Kelly Sekulovski, this year’s BOC winner for Best Personal Trainer. Working out of Angel Oak CrossFit, which offers traditional CrossFit, strength and conditioning and personal training, Sekulovski has grown her business from just a few clients into a career. Sekulovski is in the business of helping her clients get stronger and healthier, and for her, that journey is personal: “I started as a trainer because I wanted to help other people learn to be healthy and love their bodies after my own life-long struggle with body image and weight loss.” She’s happy to be part of such a tight-knit gym like Angel Oak, which recently raised money to donate meals from local restaurants to frontline workers in local hospitals during the coronavirus pandemic. “Even during a stressful and unfortunate situation it showed me that when you care about others, they care about you,” said Sekulovski. —Connelly Hardaway

Let’s be real — most of us consider our pets to be an integral part of our families. And we wouldn’t trust their health and wellness with just anyone. That’s why so many people take their furry friends to Patrick Veterinary Clinic, a frequent BOC winner. This downtown vet makes caring for your pet as easy as possible, offering walk-ins Monday-Saturday for your cats and dogs. Patrick Vet wants only the best for you and your fur babies; they incorporate high-quality veterinary medicine and the latest technology with the very human aspects of their friendly and knowledgeable staff. Best Piercing Studio
Museum of Living Arts
Ruta Smith
The Museum of Living Arts piercing studio started off a lot smaller than it is now. In fact, the original studio in its entirety could probably fit inside the current location’s procedure room. That growth didn’t come overnight, though. It came from dedication to a craft and a service, and from investment in not only a product, but in the local community. “I enjoy the people I get to work with every day,” said head piercer Michael Bernhardt. “The satisfaction — the smile — you get from the clientele when we perform that piercing or give them that certain piece of jewelry they’ve been wanting, that’s why I do it.” Bernhardt in part credits the studio’s certification with the Association of Professional Piercers for setting them apart. The global organization takes the standards piercers have for themselves and one another and elevates it to higher levels. Those high standards, Bernhardt said, are how customers know that with the Museum of Living Arts, they are getting everything they wanted from their piercer. “I think what sets us apart really is just the quality of service and jewelry you get from us,” Bernhardt said. “We do our best to make sure everybody is 100 percent satisfied with us and that we offer everybody the best possible options they can have.” —Skyler Baldwin

CHARLESTON CITY PAPER 06.17.2020
You know em, you love em, Half-Moon Outfitters has been the OG Charleston outdoors shop going on 30 years. After opening its first store downtown in 1993, the biz now boasts eight locations across two states. Half-Moon has developed a reputation as a go-to local spot for the latest trendy outdoor gear along with technical equipment you need for that next weekend outside. Whether you’ll be scrambling up a rock face or stringing up a hammock on the beach, HalfMoon has got you covered. The store’s West Ashley location is also home to one of the few climbing gyms in town, and is worth a trip to see even if you aren’t planning to pull a Free Solo anytime soon. The King Street location remains one of the few local spots, an oasis along a stretch of the popular street that’s looking more like a chain shopping mall these days.—Sam Spence

hough the coronavirus pandemic has left many restaurants and eateries shuttered throughout the year’s spring and early summer, there are still joints serving food worth celebrating in Charleston. Whether you’re looking for the new kitchen on the block (Jackrabbit), or a long-established community favorite (Mondo’s), the City Paper has you covered. From the best breakfast (Early Bird Diner) to the best desserts (Kaminsky’s) and just about every iteration of a meal in between, there is something on the menu for everyone. And, when you’re out on the town for a meal out, don’t forget to grab a drink or two from someone on our Drinking winner’s list, too.

WildFlour Pastry WildFlour Pastry closed their downtown location in 2019, but that didn’t stop them from churning out buttery scones, made-to-order cakes and Sunday sticky buns from their larger store in West Ashley. “Personally and professionally, it was really a refocus towards family and where we started,” said WildFlour owner Lauren Mitterer, who wanted to leave the 80-hour work weeks behind to spend more time with her four-year-old daughter. Despite the changes, the West Ashley store didn’t miss a beat. “We’ve definitely diversified our menu. Production-wise, and we’ve really been making an effort to have our cakes and desserts [displayed] in the case.” According to the three-time James Beard Award semifinalist, this year’s most popular dessert, key lime pie, was a surprise. “I vowed to never put it on the menu,” she said. “We do ours a little bit different. It’s yummy, it’s great, it’s just surprising.” If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it, right? Mitterer feels especially fortunate to be named Best Bakery this year. “It’s a huge honor because making that change was a giant leap of faith. The support we’ve gotten from everybody has been amazing.” —Parker Milner

Best Cheesesteak
DB’s Cheesesteaks, Hoagies & More Eating cheesesteaks is a way of life for kids growing up in eastern Pennsylvania — just ask DB’s Cheesesteaks owner Danny Bailey. Yes, we’re talking about those beloved artisan creations layered with sliced steak and gooey white American on thick Amoroso hoagie rolls. Bailey brought his version of the famed sammie to James Island 15 years ago, and after a seven year hiatus, he reopened DB’s in Avondale in 2017. Fast forward three years and you’ll still find customers rushing in at lunch time to get their Philly fix. Bailey’s family has been ordering steak from the same Pennsylvania meat company since 1982, and it’s the star of DB’s signature cheesesteak featuring chopped sirloin, melted white American and fried onions (if that’s your thing). He’s also slinging chicken cheesesteaks and a long list of hot and cold hoagies if you can find it in your heart to stray from the renowned Philly classic. Round out the meal with a large order of hand-cut fries seasoned with Old Bay for a satisfying lunch or dinner that’s well under $20. Bailey feels blessed to have such a loyal following for the cheesesteaks near and dear to his heart. “We have the best customer base in Charleston. Ninety percent of our customers that come in the door are the most kind, compassionate people. It’s an honor that people voted us in this year.” —Parker Milner

Take Out and Dine In 843.573.8787 1404 Sam Rittenberg Blvd.
Everyone loves the classics, but a place willing to transform nostalgic desserts into donut form? With an assortment that runs the gamut, Duck Donuts has City Paper readers lining up for s’mores, PB&J, cinnamon bun and other inventive fried dough flavors. “We strive everyday to make our customers happy by providing them fresh, made-to-order donuts from some of our inspirational pictures but also their creations,” said Duck Donuts store owner Katie Straughn. “We are always trying to come up with new seasonal flavors and other exciting ways to give our customers what they want.” This year, Straughn said the fan favorite was maple icing with chopped bacon. “Even for those that just think it sounds weird try it and love it.” Blueberry icing with lemon drizzle, lemon with raspberry drizzle, cinnamon sugar with vanilla drizzle and vanilla with Oreos and hot fudge were some of the other flavors customers fell in love with over the course of the year. The seasonal approach never stops at Duck Donuts, and Straughn said that customers have a lot to look forward to in 2020. “We have a few new exciting donut flavors coming out this year as well as a new peach topping which we will start in June.” —Parker Milner

Best Greek Stella’s
Go to Stella’s for the hummus or souvlaki, but stay for the authentic spanakopita, moussaka and pastichiatho that make a meal at the downtown Charleston eatery feel like a journey to Greece. Combine that with weekend brunch and craft libations and that’s what we call the full package. But it’s that never-ending devotion to Greek cuisine that sets Stella’s apart. The restaurant, named after Stella Dikos who opened the first iteration of Stella’s in Richmond in 1983, continues to marry the traditional approach with a modern vibe fitting of Charleston. Olive oil from small Greek family farms. Homemade baklava. And don’t even get us started on the honey-glazed loukoumades. Take your Greek grandmother for kotopoulo or your collegeaged little brother for boozy frappés during weekend brunch. “Thank you to all our patrons and the Holy City community for welcoming us with open arms,” the restaurant wrote in a January post honoring their third anniversary. Stella’s, you had us at phyllo-wrapped feta. CP writer Vanessa Wolf said it best, calling Stella’s a “gift from the Greek gods” when the restaurant debuted in 2017. Apparently it’s the gift that keeps on giving because we’re still going back for more. —Parker Milner

Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams 501-A King St. Downtown (843) 212-5113 jenis.com
Amid all the change on the restaurant scene downtown, Huriyali has developed into a constant for its fresh offerings and friendly staff all tucked into a compact location that’s great for grab and go or to sit and stay awhile. Huriyali’s humble beginnings were as a mobile juice cart that became a regular sight at local farmer’s markets. Flavors range depending on seasonal ingredients, but these aren’t your run-of-the-mill sticky-sweet juices. Depending on your selection, you’ll find hints of ginger, carrot, pineapple and other unique, potent flavors. Your taste buds and your body will thank you. These days, in addition to bottles of fresh juices, you can grab a filling, nutritious lunch or snack. From rich acai bowls to smoothies and poke, salads and more, this oasis on Huger Street is a solid healthy option downtown. Walk in and order from the menu at the register or grab a juice, kombucha or flavorful and filling snacks and be on your way. (Of course, because of COVID-19, you can also order online.) —Sam Spence

C MMUNITY... A THANK YOU LETTER TO OUR INDUSTRY, OUR TEAM, & OUR GUESTS
At Home Team and across the F&B Industry, we have seen the value of giving back to the community. We talk about it all the time at Home Team and giving back to the community is a two way street. We give our time and effort to help people in need and when the time comes our community gives back to us mostly through coming to see us in our shops everyday across this great city. Recently, we have been in a strange place. Normally we would jump to fill the needs of our community, but the environment rendered it unsafe for us to gather to do what we love most...to give back by feeding people. Thankfully there were folks like Feed the Need and, one of our favorite newly discovered initiatives, Pay it Forward. The thing that amazed me the most was how willing our community was willing to help us in our time of need. Our customers, like Jamie Hollingsworth and Jason Myers, came up with ideas like Hats Off
for Home Team and helped us to create a GoFundMe page to raise money for our employees. In addition, we had folks purchase special BBQ parties offered by me, my partner in crime, Taylor Garrigan, and BBQ Editor for Southern Living, Robert Moss. Through the efforts of “our Home Team”, we were able to raise 100K for our people and distribute grocery store gift certificates to all of our 370 employees here in Charleston, Columbia and across the country at our Colorado shop. We are so thankful for all of you for helping us look out for the lifeblood of our organization, our people! And so it is award season at the City Paper. Over the last 14 years at Home Team, awards and accolades have come and gone. For us, this recognition is meaningful and important. It means that you all recognize what we work so hard to do...make you happy in as many ways as we can. Whether it’s a food adventure in our truly diverse Charleston BBQ culture, a rock show or a game, a place for your kids to run around and grub on some wings (We finally dusted the Chik fil A Goliath in the “most kid friendly” battle….parents, we have Gamechangers and they don’t!) or a late night place for our friends in the F&B industry to gather and unwind after a hard night’s work. We ask our employees to do so much in a day. These awards are so diverse, they truly are a tip of the hat to our amazing staff and their abilities. We are so honored to be recognized for things like “Best Bar Staff” and runner up in “Best Wait Staff”. Those are the compliments we truly hold dear because it means you are saying “thank you” and “we see you” to the people that make it happen everyday. Our people are everything to us and it feels so good when our community, our Home Team, recognizes our people. From the bottom of my heart, I say thank you to the amazing people that make up this community, our brothers and sisters in the F&B industry and our employees....our Home Team!. Please be kind, be understanding and be well. Much Love and Respect!

Being part of the Charleston Food and Beverage Industry is an honor and a privilege. There are so many hard working individuals and organizations that take a huge leap everyday to make sure that their guests have unique and extraordinary experiences. Food and Bev folks are different. We are a little wild, a tiny bit crazy and truly creative folks, but what we crave is the opportunity to make people happy with our food, drink and the atmospheres we create. A customer’s smile is what defines hospitality for us and is what brings us through the doors everyday. The last few months have tested us all and we will continue to be challenged in this great community we call home. I have seen the Food and Beverage Industry show its true colors more than ever. I have seen people coming together to help each other whether it be through combining resources to tackle issues that we face, helping to provide opportunities for our people and organizations or just simply shouting out in support of each other. The brotherhood and sisterhood that exists in our industry is more evident than ever. We are proud and grateful to be a part of such a courageous and persevering group and we will never take that for granted.

Best James Island Restaurant Mondo’s
Provided
With modern Italian restaurants popping up all over the city, you might forget the decades-old joint relied on for baked rigatoni and chicken parmesan. Well, it looks like City Paper readers still have an appreciation for an old school offering that always seems to hit the spot. At Mondo’s, chef and owner Chris Orlando prides himself on house-made ingredients. Fresh pasta with gorgonzola sauce. Hearty hand-rolled meatballs. Eggplant parm. The list goes on and on. The mark of elite Italian cuisine is when diners consistently come in for the same exact dish they can’t live without, and the Mondo’s faithful are doing just that. “Over the past 20 plus years, our menu has been focused around our customers’ favorites,” said Orlando. “Since we started in 1998, we always strive to provide our guests with high quality and skillfully cooked food along with service from a staff that is truly passionate about the experience.” See that’s the thing with Italian joints like Mondo’s — the food shines on its own, but the service makes the restaurant feel like an extension of your home. Orlando is appreciative of every guest that walks into his. “We are always humbled by the praise we get from our customers and don’t take loyalty for granted.” —Parker Milner

All eyes were on Shuai and Corrie Wang when they opened their new Park Circle restaurant last year after years of dazzling diners with Short Grain, a food truck that later morphed into a pop-up. The couple did not disappoint, earning a rave review from CP’s food critic before getting the stamp of approval from City Paper readers. When we go, the hot karaage is a must, as is at least one stir fried noodle dish. From there, it’s an ongoing battle with yourself to see how much food you’re willing to pile into your stomach. Seemingly every dish has a hidden treasure waiting inside — shout out to the Holy City Hog chorizo-laced mapo tofu dish. Corrie Wang said, “Shuai had a little cult following” for the saucy entree, so apparently we weren’t the only ones who fell in love with it. “Our customers have been rooting for us ever since we were this tiny little food truck,” said Wang. “It takes a minute to hit because you’re so overwhelmed but there would be these gleaming moments where you look out [at the restaurant] and realize that we built this. You’re so in it all the time that it’s sometimes hard to see the whole picture.” —Parker Milner

After serving Southern favorites to Charleston crowds for nearly four decades and receiving praise from countless national news outlets, there’s no question that Martha Lou Gadsden’s legendary restaurant is a deserving recipient of Best Soul Food honors. The bright pink building on Morrison Drive is a local landmark filled with the aroma of crisp fried chicken, baked macaroni and cornbread. Simply put, a meal at Martha Lou’s Kitchen is something every resident and visitor should experience. From the silky limas and fried-to-order chicken and the red rice, pork chops and extra sweet tea, each menu item has that home-cooked feel. That’s because Gadsden came up with all the dishes herself before passing them on to her three daughters, who now run the busy kitchen. They’re continuing to honor the restaurant’s legacy with friendly service and hearty portions. Gadsden’s cuisine is not only delicious, but it reminds us just how essential soul food is to the Charleston culinary scene. Built on the idea of nourishing the community, Martha Lou’s delivers every single time. Come hungry, leave happy … and then go back again next week. —Parker Milner

T
hose who’ve been up and down King Street on a Saturday night know that Charlestonians aren’t afraid of a few adult beverages. Whether it’s a drink at aptly named Best Cocktail destination The Cocktail Club or a lively evening of karaoke at Best New Bar The Bangkok Lounge, downtown Charleston has you covered. And there’s even more on the outskirts of town. From breweries in North Charleston (see: 2020 Best Local Brewery, Holy City Brewing) to local-favorite stops like Tattooed Moose, Johns Island’s Best Bar, there are plenty of places to hunker down with friends over a cold beverage ... or three. More than just the bars, lounges and retail shops, it’s people like Best Bartender Shana Swain and Best Sommelier Sarah O’Kelley who make these destinations so special. You’ve got the spots City Paper readers revere, now all that’s left to do is get out there and explore, one drink at a time.

The crew behind the bar at Home Team BBQ should be commended not only for serving up killer drinks, but for not missing a beat when the crowds come in. And boy, do they. We’re all a little more cautious these days, what with the deadly pandemic sweeping through, but if you never stopped by the Home Team on Sullivan’s Island on a sunny beach day or downtown when nighttime crowds start flooding in, it’s a sight to behold. Craft beer after gamechanger after crushable macro cans float over the bar, and this team doesn’t miss a beat. (If you have subjected yourself to more than one round of Gamechangers, you know that things can get a little hairy after subsequent trips back to the bar.) Frankly, I am sure we all owe them an apology for something that happened at some point, but they won’t hold it against you. Maybe we can consider this a blanket apology? So whether you’re stopping by for dinner or grabbing a Gamechanger after a little sun, don’t miss the action behind the bar that makes the magic happen. Cheers, HT folks. —Sam Spence

Working behind a bar is more than just crafting cocktails for CP Best Bartender Shana Swain, who spent 14 years at Manny’s Mediterranean Restaurant before joining the team at Zen Asian Fusion five years ago. After nearly two decades at West Ashley bars, Swain has found that the elite bartenders are able to connect with their customers. “The key is being as relatable as possible,” said Swain. “My customers and guests are friends now. It’s one thing to make a really good drink and it’s another to secure the trust of the guest.” Swain said that customers love their sake and cocktail list at Zen Asian Fusion, which includes hits like the gin and elderflower infused “Lotus Flower,” her favorite drink to make. “I think we’ve managed to please everyone,” said Swain, who also admitted to having a soft spot for classic cocktails like the Manhattan and Old Fashioned. For Swain, the recognition is the culmination of a career spent at customer-driven establishments. “Having been in the industry so long, I’ve been able to observe accolades going to people in certain areas of town. This gives me a validation that even the small bars have an incredible following.” —Parker Milner

Best Brewery
Holy City Brewing Like their new neighbor Firefly, Holy City Brewing (HCB) upgraded to a much larger location this past year, pouring drafts in a 10,000-square-foot taproom. Overlooking Noisette Creek and right down the street from popular Park Circle, Holy City is the perfect spot for locals, visitors and beer lovers of all stripes. A North Charleston staple since 2011, HCB was founded by Chris Brown, Mac Minaudo, Joe Carl and Sean Nemitz. “Holy City Brewing has always tried to support our local community whenever possible. Whether it’s through beer donation or having events in our tap room, local charities and our community have always been on our mind. We love brewing beer in this town and will do whatever we can to support it,” said Brown. Stop by the brewery seven days a week for a wide variety of brews, an in-house kitchen and a familyfriendly atmosphere (just be sure to leave the pups at home). You may get the chance to sip on a beer that’s not just made locally, but made with local ingredients. Brown says folks can look forward to Madam Basil on tap soon, made with basil from Rita’s Roots. —Connelly Hardaway

Firefly Distillery
Charleston’s oldest working distillery, Firefly moved into some brand new digs this year. The 20,000-square-foot distillery opened earlier this year on South Rhett Avenue, near Park Circle. And while the building itself is massively impressive, the distillery’s story is even more so. Way back in 2007-2008, Firefly helped lead the S.C. liquor industry out of the rut in which it was stuck. Founders Jim Irvin and Scott Newitt hired lobbyists and lawyers to get a bill passed into state law that made it affordable — and legal — to distill, sample and purchase bottled spirits at S.C. distilleries. And while we have Firefly to thank for sensible liquor laws, the distillery wants to thank Charleston for the city’s continued support. “Owning a local business for the last 12 years has been the most rewarding work in my life,” said Newitt. “I get so much joy out of each day because I’m doing what I love in such an amazing city. The community here in Charleston is essential to our success. Their continued support makes us able to do what we love every day.” —Connelly Hardaway

Best Happy Hour Edmund’s Oast
The Edmund’s Oast happy hour gets bonus points for starting early at 4:30 p.m., but the real reasons an afternoon at the 23-seat bar are a can’t miss attraction are the $5 bites from executive chef Bob Cook. Pair that with a $5 cocktail or house beer and you’ve got yourself an ideal escape from reality. “Obviously with any happy hour, the key pillar is going to be value,” said Edmund’s Oast owner Scott Shor. With $5 catfish sliders, tiny burgers and plates of sticky peanut wings, it’s safe to say they have that part covered. In addition, Shor said they offer their happy hour seven days a week to make it available for everyone. “Hospitality is about being inclusive, not exclusive. The diversity of our items and the fact that it’s easily accessible makes ours a little different.” Happy hour isn’t all about the food and drink, especially if you plan on staying awhile. A comfortable seat is a must, and the cushiony chairs at the Edmund’s Oast bar certainly do the trick. Did we just describe the perfect happy hour? We can’t promise you won’t extend the visit past the 6:30 p.m. conclusion of discounted prices, but we’re willing to put money on this happy hour becoming a part of your post-work rotation. —Parker Milner

The Bangkok Lounge Tiki-themed The Bangkok Lounge found their sweet spot early on with karaoke seven nights a week. But this isn’t just any old dive bar karaoke situation. Let’s start with the setup. Walk up a steep set of stairs to the small bar where you’ll find a couple microphones and a karaoke machine in front of an exposed brick wall. This “stage” is where all the magic happens. Nightly themes provide inspiration for your song choice — one night could feature metal and another might involve singing along to music from the ’90s. Local drag queens like Crystal Guysir often emcee to keep the good times rolling. “The space has such a cool little bar room vibe,” said owner Chris “Boston” DiMattia. “I’ve always liked going to that space and hanging out there.” The upstairs bar was most recently occupied by King Street Bait and Tackle, but most remember it as Upper Deck Tavern, the local-favorite watering hole that closed in 2018 after 16 successful years. Back in its heyday, Upper Deck hosted karaoke, so in a way DiMattia’s funky new bar pays homage to the beloved tavern. DiMattia was thrilled to see The Bangkok Lounge quickly gain popularity in Charleston. “I think the city was ready for a fun outlet to be a little silly,” he said. Anyone who’s been knows he certainly succeeded. —Parker Milner

Sarah O’Kelley had a big year as the general manager of Edmund’s Oast Exchange, completely transforming the retail store into a daytime cafe with nightly events geared towards wine enthusiasts. “Last spring, we started talking about adding more seating and making it more of an extension of the restaurant,” said O’Kelley. “Once you add the element of food, it makes it all the more enjoyable to have a few drinks.” It wasn’t just the food that brought people into The Exchange. Those looking to enhance their wine knowledge signed up for O’Kelley’s “Somm School” classes, so popular that she added a “Somm School 2.0” series focusing on specific wine regions. Even when the coronavirus pandemic rocked the food and beverage industry, O’Kelley was able to adapt. “We’ve managed to keep some of our programming going during this crazy time,” she said. “On Thursdays, we’ve done some blind tastings. You come in, buy the wines and then I’ve recorded myself walking people through a blind tasting on YouTube Live. We’ve reached different people during this time which has been one silver lining of this.” According to O’Kelley, her Charleston colleagues help her push the boundaries everyday. “It’s not just me, there’s a whole wine community in this town and I think we all keep each other going.” —Parker Milner

ARIES (March 21-April 19): My Aries friend Lavinia told me, “The fight I’m enjoying most lately is my fight to resist the compulsion to fight.” I invite you to consider adopting that attitude for the foreseeable future. Now and then, you Rams do seem to thrive on conflict, or at least use it to achieve worthy deeds — but the coming weeks will not be one of those times. I think you’re due for a phase of sweet harmony. The more you cultivate unity and peace and consensus, the healthier you’ll be. Do you dare act like a truce-maker, an agreement-broker, and a connoisseur of rapport? TAURUS (April 20-May 20): “The answers you get depend upon the questions you ask,” wrote physicist and philosopher Thomas Kuhn. That’s always true, of course, but it’s especially true for you right now. I recommend that you devote substantial amounts of your earthy intelligence to the task of formulating the three most important questions for you to hold at the forefront of your awareness during the rest of 2020. If you do, I suspect you will ultimately receive answers that are useful, interesting, and transformative. GEMINI (May 21-June 20): “A finished person is a boring person,” writes author Anna Quindlen. I agree! Luckily, you are quite unfinished, and thus not at all boring — especially these days. More than ever before, you seem willing to treat yourself as an art project that’s worthy of your creative ingenuity — as a work-in-progress that’s open to new influences and fresh teachings. That’s why I say your unfinishedness is a sign of good health and vitality. It’s delightful and inspiring. You’re willing to acknowledge that you’ve got a lot to learn and more to grow. In fact, you celebrate that fact; you exult in it; you regard it as a key part of your ever-evolving identity. CANCER (June 21-July 22): “To hell with pleasure that’s haunted by fear,” wrote Cancerian author Jean de La Fontaine. I’ll make that one of my prayers for you in the coming weeks. It’s a realistic goal you can achieve and install as a permanent improvement in your life. While you’re at it, work on the following prayers, as well: 1. To hell with bliss that’s haunted by guilt. 2. To hell with joy that’s haunted by worry. 3. To hell with breakthroughs that are haunted by debts to the past. 4. To hell with uplifts that are haunted by other people’s pessimism. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Experiment #1: As you take a walk in nature, sing your five favorite songs from beginning to end, allowing yourself to fully feel all the emotions those tunes arouse in you. Experiment #2: Before you go to sleep on each of the next eleven nights, ask your dreams to bring you stories like those told by the legendary Scheherazade, whose tales were so beautiful and engaging that they healed and improved the lives of all those who heard them. Experiment #3: Gaze into the mirror and make three promises about the gratifying future you will create for yourself during the next 12 months. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Vincent van Gogh’s painting “The Starry Night” is one of the world’s most treasured paintings. It has had a prominent place in New York’s Museum of Modern Art since 1941. If it ever came up for sale it would probably fetch over $100 million. But soon after he created this great masterpiece, van Gogh himself called it a “failure.” He felt the stars he’d made were too big and abstract. I wonder if you’re engaging in a comparable underestimation of your own. Are there elements of your life that are actually pretty good, but you’re not giving them the credit and appreciation they deserve? Now’s a good time to reconsider and re-evaluate. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Now is a favorable time to make adjustments in how you allocate your attention — to re-evaluate what you choose to focus on. Why? Because some people, issues, situations, and experiences may not be worthy of your intense care and involvement, and you will benefit substantially from redirecting your fine intelligence in more rewarding directions. To empower your efforts, study these inspirational quotes: “Attention is the rarest and purest form of generosity.” — philosopher Simone Weil. “Attention is the natural prayer of the soul.” —philosopher Nicolas Malebranche.
By Rob Brezsny
SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Scorpio poet Marianne Moore’s poem “O To Be a Dragon,” begins with the fantasy, “If I, like Solomon, could have my wish . . .” What comes next? Does Moore declare her desire to be the best poet ever? To be friends with smart, interesting, creative people? To be admired and gossiped about for wearing a tricorn hat and black cape as she walked around Greenwich Village near her home? Nope. None of the above. Her wish: “O to be a dragon, a symbol of the power of Heaven — of silk-worm size or immense; at times invisible. Felicitous phenomenon!” In accordance with astrological omens, I invite you to be inspired by Moore in the coming weeks. Make extravagant wishes for lavish and amusing powers, blessings, and fantastic possibilities. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): “Poems, like dreams, are a sort of royal road to the unconscious,” writes author Erica Jong. “They tell you what your secret self cannot express.” I invite you to expand that formula so it’s exactly suitable for you in the coming weeks. My sense is that you are being called to travel the royal road to your unconscious mind so as to discover what your secret self has been unable or unwilling to express. Poems and dreams might do the trick for you, but so might other activities. For example: sexual encounters between you and a person you respect and love; or an intense night of listening to music that cracks open the portal to the royal road. Any others? What will work best for you? CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): “We must combine the toughness of the serpent and the softness of the dove, a tough mind and a tender heart.” Capricorn hero Martin Luther King, Jr. said that, and now I’m conveying it to you. In my astrological opinion, his formula is a strategy that will lead you to success in the coming weeks. It’ll empower you to remain fully open and receptive to the fresh opportunities flowing your way, while at the same time you’ll remain properly skeptical about certain flimflams and delusions that may superficially resemble those fresh opportunities. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): “If it makes you nervous — you’re doing it right,” says the daring musician and actor Donald Glover. Personally, I don’t think that’s true in all situations. I’ve found that on some occasions, my nervousness stems from not being fully authentic or being less than completely honest. But I do think Glover’s formula fully applies to your efforts in the coming weeks, Aquarius. I hope you will try new things that will be important to your future, and/or work to master crucial skills you have not yet mastered. And if you’re nervous as you carry out those heroic feats, I believe it means you’re doing them right. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): Piscean author Patricia Hampl understands a lot about the epic tasks of trying to know oneself and be oneself. She has written two memoirs, and some of her other writing draws from her personal experiences, as well. And yet she confesses, “Maybe being oneself is always an acquired taste.” She suggest that it’s often easier to be someone you’re not; to adopt the ways of other people as your own; to imitate what you admire rather than doing the hard work of finding out the truth about yourself. That’s the bad news, Pisces. The good news is that this year has been and will continue to be a very favorable time to ripen into the acquired taste of being yourself. Take advantage of this ripening opportunity in the coming weeks! Homework: What is the greatest gift you have to offer your fellow humans? Have you found good ways to give it? FreeWillAstrology.com

BYE SOCIAL LIFE, HELLO MOVIES | BY KEVIN YOUNG
Step Right Up From freaky to funny, here are our favorite carnival-themed flicks Carnivals are magical. Movies like The Notebook, Big, The Music Man and Grease have captured, however briefly, the fun, the romance and the cavalcade of magicalness therein. That’s all well and good. More often than not, though, I associate carnivals with weirdo art films, horror movies, HBO’s long gone Carnivale and American Horror Story’s Tod Browning-inspired season, Freak Show. I’m not saying carnivals can’t be innocent, mirth-filled places. They can be — I just prefer to think of them as seedy places, hence this list of carnival movies leaning into the darkness.
The Funhouse
A lot of bad ideas start at a carnival. Remember when Reese Witherspoon decided to go one step further with Mark Wahlberg in the 1996 psycho boyfriend flick Fear? See? Another bad idea that could only come up at a carnival is the idea of staying in a funhouse overnight for kicks. Those four jerkwad teens, Buzz, Rich, Liz and Amy in Tobe Hooper’s 1981 film The Funhouse did precisely that. It doesn’t go well when they witness a murder by one of the sideshow attractions, Gunther. A glorious slice of gruesome nuttery that likely inspired...
Hell Fest
Set in 2018, a group of teens are picked off by a guy in a creepy mask that takes advantage of the setting’s chaotic nature. That’s the story. You’ve definitely seen it done better but there are some rare moments of macabre to be found in spite of all the stupid jump scares.
Santa Sangre
Carnivals have an avant-garde nature to them, featuring colorful attractions that are only matched by the colorful characters and colorful situations. Speaking of avant-garde, it’s only natural that director Alejandro Jodorowsky (El Topo, Holy Mountain) would focus on a character like Fenix. At one point, the son of a circus performer witnessed his mom getting her arms hacked off. One day after escaping an institution, Fenix bonds with his mom — now a cult leader. In typical Jodorowsky fashion, things get even more gruesome and nutty.

SANTA SANGRE (TOP) AND CARNIVAL OF SOULS (ABOVE) ARE BOTH CARNIVAL MOVIES THAT ARE NOT SO MAINSTREAM
Poor Mary Henry (Candace Hilligoss). Maybe if it weren’t for that car accident, she wouldn’t be haunted by visions of white faced ghouls following her and that deserted carnival in the distance. Industrial films director Herk Harvey, the man behind such films as Why Study Industrial Arts and Shake Hands with Danger made this glorious 1962 one-off that, I’m assuming, influenced M. Night Shyamalan a wee bit.
The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari
What’s a shame about older movies like Carnival of Souls is that, outside of the snobby nerd circles, they rarely get much modern day acknowledgement. Speaking of older movies, no elitist film snob would live a complete life without having seen Robert Wiene’s 1920 silent film about a sideshow hypnotist that may be using a sleepwalker, Cesare, to do some murdering. There are some fun twists and turns to be found while traversing all the
German expressionism on display in Wiene’s creepy film. That century-old film still inspires the likes of Rob Zombie’s House of 1000 Corpses to this day.
The Lowcountry’s True Gentlemen’s Club
Carny
While we’re on the topic of nutty let’s talk about Gary Busey. He plays Bozo, a clown that sits on one of those contraptions that drop the sitter into a filthy mini pool of water when a person throws a ball at the target — a dunk tank. Anyway Bozo hooks up with a young woman, Donna, who looks a lot like Jodie Foster. Enchanted by that encounter, Donna decides to run away from home and join the carnival. She meets Bozo’s carny buddy, Patch (Robbie Robertson). A semi-love triangle ensues and a sub-plot about third rate gangsters occur in this drama that supposedly started out as a documentary about carnies. It definitely captures that not so innocent vibe well.
Carnival Magic
Even the most innocent film on this list still has an air of grime to it. On its face, the tale of a talented yet poor magician/mind-reader named Markov the Magnificent teaming up with a smartass talking chimp named Alexander the Great sounds like the apex of family fun. There should be a fun, whimsical thing going on but it feels more than a little scuzzy, however unintentional. That may be because the director, the late Al Adamson, was trying to make his first ever

AL ADAMSON’S 1981 CARNIVAL MAGIC JUST MIGHT BE A FLICK FOR THE LESS-THANDISCERNING CINEPHILE
family film after a prolific career of over 30 exploitation and horror flicks with illustrious titles like Satan’s Sadists, The Naughty Stewardesses, Dracula vs. Frankenstein and Brain of Blood. In a 2010 interview with The Austin Chronicle, former Alamo Drafthouse programmer/author Zack Carlson once colorfully said the movie, “Just has this pervasive air of stale, alcoholic uncles ... You can tell it was made by people who have never spent any time around children.” Recently restored on Blu-ray, this is a fun little weirdo curio if you’re into cinematic misfires that wind up getting roasted on Mystery Science Theater 3000.
