City quietly rolls out new brand based on historic seal

If you were keeping up with the City of Charleston’s newsletters throughout recent stormy weather, you might have noticed something different. The city’s branding changed. And reportedly, city council members found out about it when everybody else did.

Emblazoned at the top of online press communications beginning in early August was a new brand mark with a lot of the same iconography as the city’s historic seal. It includes the Charleston harbor skyline and a woman holding a laurel crown, which was added to the official seal in 1907. The new icon also retains the Latin phrases, “Aedes mores juraque curat,” which means “she guards her buildings, customs and rights” and “Civitatis regimine donata A. D. 1783,” which translates to “given to the rule of the citizens in 1783.”

But missing in the new brand — which one designer calls a minimalist, modernized design — are original details like the recognizable steeples of the St. Philip’s Church and St. Michael’s Church, both part of the original 1790 design.

“When I saw that the artist didn’t even reimagine the steeples correctly, that

brought me to a huge conclusion,” one local designer, who wished to remain nameless, told the Charleston City Paper. “I was done looking at it at that point.”

City official says official seal isn’t changing

But the city’s new director of communications said the official seal isn’t changing.

“That’s not going anywhere,” said Deja Knight McMillan. “That’s been there since 1790, and the version we use today has been here since 1907.”

So what’s the deal with this new version that excludes historic embellishments and recognizable locales? It’s part of a longterm plan to update the city’s branding, McMillan said.

The Rundown

No arrest made in reported threat

State Rep. J.A. Moore, D-North Charleston, reported to authorities Tuesday that he was threatened with a gun in an afternoon parking incident outside of his daughter’s Park Circle school. It was her first day in the classroom.

According to a press release, Moore was about to pull into a parking spot when a black truck, driven by a White male approximately 60 years old, approached and brandished a gun.

A police report said the man then fled and went to an East Montague Avenue bar where officers made contact. Police said the 66-year-old man eventually admitted having a verbal argument, but “denied brandishing a handgun toward the victim.” As of noon Wednesday, no arrest had been made.

Moore, a longtime advocate for curbing gun violence, said Tuesday’s situation renewed his commitment to reform gun policies. — City Paper staff

“This new logo is just being used as a kind of placeholder,” she said in an exclusive interview with the City Paper. “We derived it from the seal, because obviously, it’s beautiful, and we didn’t want to just rebrand the city entirely overnight. … It’s just being used for unofficial documents. Anything official — think proclamations, ordinances, resolutions, anything the mayor signs or that comes out of council — will still use the official seal.”

Meanwhile the artist who was critical of the city’s new effort said that the absence of the steeples told her that either the new brand’s designer didn’t know or care about the city’s history.

6 shot, killed across South Carolina Aug. 8 to Aug. 14

Charleston police arrested Nathan Mungin, 19, of Adams Run, in connection with an Aug. 9 shooting that injured one person at the Citadel Mall in West Ashley.

Six others died in Greenville, Orangeburg, Pickens, Chesterfield and Laurens counties. Three more were hurt in shootings across the state. Nationally, there were 11 mass shootings for the week, totalling 346 for the year.

State works to transform mental health system

South Carolina is more than two years into an aggressive plan to spend more than $200 million to partially repair a fragmented public and private mental health system that some say lacks innovative policies and programs and consistent oversight and accountability.

As the state attempts to improve mental health services, it should not overlook people with intellectual and related disabilities, mental health challenges and substance use disorders, according to a report prepared by the Boston Consulting Group that was released earlier this year.

The study also found, among other things, that the health care system has limited data sharing and poor data quality to measure and manage health goals. The report also cited the state with high turnover and attrition within the state-agency workforce.

The 34-page report — Act 60 Health Analysis — said South Carolina should especially consider the impact improvements might have on rural and low-income residents, the uninsured and the youth.

The report points to an insufficient availability of services to support people with mental health, substance use and intellectual and developmental disabilities. In the report, an unidentified Charleston-area resident, whose daughter requires care for intellectual disability and related disabilities, said: “My daughter is authorized for 60 hours of personal care assistance per week, but we only receive 10-12 hours because

there aren’t enough people to do the work. We … can’t imagine how hard it is to find care in rural communities.”

A call to action

The focus on the state’s mental health system is in response to South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster’s announcement during his 2022 State of the State address that the state is in a mental health crisis and young people, isolated during the pandemic, are hardest hit.

The governor directed the S.C. Department of Health and Human Services (SCDHHS) to study the mental health crisis. The agency formed an informal advisory committee of “public and private behavioral health stakeholders that’s working together to address behavioral health needs in the state,” said Jeff Leieritz, the agency’s director of strategic communications.

Kimberly Tissot, president and chief executive officer of Able South Carolina, said the state has “failed South Carolinians with mental health diagnoses for decades, and it is critical to invest in communitybased services.”

The old ways of placing people behind closed walls and in institutions is abusive and doesn’t work, she insisted. “Currently, our system can’t serve people with dual diagnoses, and any investment in community-based services is closer to where we need to be to save the lives of people while protecting the state from violating several disability rights legislations.”

The S.C. Department of Mental Health

The S.C. Department of Health and Human Services has awarded $45.5 million in grants to 13 hospitals to build specialized units by 2026 within existing emergency departments to handle behavioral health situations. Three of them are in the Charleston area including Trident Hospital in North Charleston.

(SCDMH) is in discussions with the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) to avoid a federal lawsuit. After conducting an investigation, the DOJ told the state in July 2023 it has likely violated the law by unnecessarily warehousing people with a mental illness when they could live independently in settings most appropriate to their needs.

Tracy LaPointe, SCDMH’s public information director, said the agency was “surprised by the (DOJ’s) findings, due to the agency’s significant efforts and successes in diligently addressing these exact issues.” Talks with the DOJ are on-going, she added.

An improvement plan

The focus on mental health systems has led to increased community and hospital-based services, the hiring of more mental health counselors in schools, a new mental health hospital in Florence and plans to expand services through Medicaid.

SCDHHS, which runs the state’s Medicaid program, will extend care to about 60,000 children in foster care and adults with serious mental illnesses by the end of the year through the Medicaid managed care plans. The change is designed to eliminate a duplication of services and reduce the need for expensive medical services, Leieritz explained.

The agency has awarded $45.5 million in grants to 13 hospitals to build specialized units by 2026 within existing emergency departments to handle behavioral health situations, he said. A unit at Trident Hospital in North Charleston is open and two units at Medical University of South Carolina hospitals in Charleston are expected to be open in 2025, he said.

The agency has awarded an additional 26 grants, costing $48.2 million, to create or improve mental health facilities in rural and medically underserved areas in the tricounty.

State’s lawsuits against feds: partisan or a needed check on power?

When S.C. Attorney General Alan Wilson sued the Biden administration for what his office said was at least the 50th time last week — in this case, over health care for children brought to the United States illegally — some Palmetto State political observers said they were reminded of an old joke.

Q: In state politics, what does “A.G.” stand for?

A: Aspiring governor.

“It’s extremely obvious that Alan Wilson is going to run for governor in the next cycle,” said former S.C. Democratic Party Chair Trav Robertson. “And the only way he consolidates his base is by consistently wasting tax dollars by filing frivolous lawsuits.”

What’s more, Robertson says, is that Democrats plan to make those lawsuits a major issue the next time they see Wilson’s

name on a general election ballot.

“It’s a double-edged sword,” Robertson said. “He can solidify his base, but these lawsuits are going to come back and be a serious bone of contention with swing voters in South Carolina.”

Wilson spokesman Robert Kittle pushed back against the charge in a Tuesday statement to the Charleston City Paper.

“This has never been about politics or any ambitions that Attorney General Wilson may or may not have,” Kittle said. “He brings these lawsuits, or joins them, when he feels like any president oversteps his constitutional authority. Attorney General Wilson has always made it clear that he fights to uphold the rule of law and the Constitution.”

But academics who study federalism — that is, the relationship between the federal government and the states — say neither of those explanations captures the whole story. Wilson’s stream of lawsuits aren’t just good politics for an aspiring governor — or good constitutional stewardship by the state’s top lawyer.

The suits are, they say, part of a larger effort by state attorneys general to seize a share of national policy-making power — an effort that started small in the late 1990s, grew slowly through the early 2000s and exploded during the presidencies of Barack Obama, Donald Trump and Joe Biden.

Litigating hot-button issues’

Paul Nolette is the director of the Les Aspin Center for Government at Marquette University and the author of Federalism on Trial: State Attorneys General and National Policymaking in Contemporary America.

“One of the most important developments of the last couple decades with state A.G.s has been their emergence on the national stage,” Nolette told the City Paper in a Monday interview. “They’re getting much more involved in national issues, [including] some of the most hot-button topics of the day.”

A look at the federal lawsuits and filings that Wilson has brought since Biden took office, often jointly with other Republican state attorneys general, seems to confirm that “hot-button” characterization. Here’s a sampling of headlines from the attorney general’s website:

• Wilson files lawsuit to stop vaccine mandate for healthcare workers

• Wilson joins multistate action to end CDC’s unlawful mask mandate

• Wilson joins coalition against Biden

Charleston designer,” said the artist. “We have a lot of local artists and branding agencies, and they were overlooked for this. … I think maybe the city of Charleston just doesn’t realize how big and how talented the artist community is here.”

McMillan said the team behind the new logo is local, and its work is part of a larger “content creation” contract. It handles photography, videography and digital design. She also added the brand modernization is a part of the new Cogswell administration’s goals for the city as a whole.

“We feel like we are communicating to more people directly than ever before,” she said. “So we decided to pull all of the things that make up the seal and put it in a format that is a little bit more cleaned up. … It just points toward what we’re wanting to do overall with this administration, which is to modernize and streamline how we do things.”

A quiet rollout … or caught with pants down?

The brand’s critic said modernization — and even minimalist design — isn’t necessarily a bad thing, and even had some positive reaction to the logo’s design at first glance. But it didn’t hold up to closer inspection. And she said she would have liked to see the local

In addition, prior to Biden’s swearing in, Wilson joined a Republican friend of the court brief challenging the results of the 2020 presidential election.

Partisanship or not?

While there’s no disagreement about the partisan nature of recent state attorney general interventions in federal policymaking, people who’ve studied the issue are split on the implications.

Nolette, who maintains a detailed database of federal cases brought by state attorneys general, sees the clear partisanship running through the numbers as worrisome. According to the database, Democratic attorneys general brought more than 97% of the cases against the Trump administration, and Republican attorneys general have brought more than 95% of the cases against

community more involved in the decisionmaking and designing processes.

“I think they could have done it in a different way,” she said. “The main thing would be to find … people who know their stuff and know their history and are willing to put the research and passion behind the art. It will show everyone that you want to be involved with the local community and the designers and artists who are already here.”

Charleston City Council member Karl Brady agreed.

“I saw it when everybody else did. It just appeared,” he told the City Paper. “If we were going to go through a rebrand, it would have been nice for us to provide some input on it. … I wish we had been consulted and provided a little feedback.”

McMillan said that is the goal for future branding projects, but that getting something digital now rather than later was a bigger priority for the communications team.

“It’s really important to have something that really encompasses the entire city and everyone in it because we have such a diverse group of people here and so many diverse cultures. Our city is built on a diverse tapestry, and making sure all of those people and all the different parts of this city are represented is really important.”

McMillan, who grew up in Alabama, said the full rebranding process is probably “a ways away,” as city leaders would want to include the community in the design process in some way.

Biden. Wilson, for instance, filed only two cases under Trump, as opposed to the 50-plus under Biden. Overall, Democrats won 83% of their cases and Republicans had won 76% through 2023.

“It’s gotten very, very partisan and polarized, like the rest of the political system,” Nolette said. “And often with issues that don’t necessarily have anything to do directly with the state, but instead have more to do with a commitment to a broader ideological vision.”

Moreover, he says he’s concerned about the lack of subject-area expertise state attorneys general bring to many of these cases.

“A lot of these areas are very complicated, whether you’re talking about the Clean Air Act or Medicaid fraud or even some parts of civil rights law,” Nolette said. “When it comes to some of these policy-specific areas, if A.G.s are driven largely by ideological or partisan concerns, that’s a problem.”

But Charleston City Councilman Mike Seekings, a former Charleston School of Law professor who practices constitutional law, argues the attorneys general as a group are performing an essential public service, regardless of partisan motivations.

“In the end, attorneys general are there in part to protect states when there are failings at the federal level,” Seekings said. “They’re a check and balance against federal overreach that affects individual states or states collectively.”

Blotter of the Week

An apparently angry driver leaned out of a window, yelled profanities and pointed his fingers in the shape of a gun as he reportedly followed a man’s car July 27 on Interstate 526. The other driver wisely pulled over at a Charleston police command post on Seven Farms Drive on Daniel Island, but the irked follower kept going. Wonder why? We thought he had something to say.

We got a wiggly one North Charleston police on Aug. 7 arrested a North Charleston man for breach of peace outside a Rivers Avenue business. The man reportedly thrashed about, attempted to climb out of officers’ arms and “launch himself out of the vehicle” — bumping his head in the process — before calming down. He must have knocked some sense into himself.

Proof of true love

A West Ashley man’s neighbor on Aug. 8 reportedly sprayed his door with a fire extinguisher. The man told officers that his ex-girlfriend recently started dating the neighbor, and that’s why he believed he would do this. Ah, to see new couples demonstrating their love for each other through acts of vandalism. It isn’t even Valentine’s Day.

Is the Cogswell administration more style than substance?

The quiet but kind of haughty rollout of a new brand mark for the city of Charleston by the new Cogswell administration caught many by surprise, including city council members. We hope this isn’t an example of how the city will be run for the next three and a half years.

But the somewhat ugly new brand mark with its simplistic sans serif type is the second instance of what may be a leadership trend — an administration doing what it wants without including people, assuming that forgiveness is easier to get than permission.

This week in a story uncovered by reporter Skyler Baldwin, city spokesperson Deja Knight McMillan said the city’s new logo won’t replace its official seal that goes back to 1790. But she said the updated logo by a new outside brand creator that is handling photography, videography and digital design is part of a larger “content creation” contract. The City Paper asked July 16 in a Freedom of Information Act request for details of current lobbying and social media/communications contracts but has not received any information yet from the city.

“This new logo is just being used as a kind of placeholder,” McMillan said. “We derived it from the seal, because obviously, it’s beautiful, and we didn’t want to just rebrand the city entirely overnight. … It’s just being used for unofficial documents.”

OK, but the whole rebranding thing was done quietly, without input from council or the public. Seems wrong.

And while all of this might not be all that off-putting, it raises another question: Is the Cogswell administration

trying to quietly move away from the city’s historical strongmayor form of government toward a structure administered by a manager?

Just look at a new organizational chart that Cogswell announced in May. Before then, the city’s 26 departments and mayor’s office operated independently, the administration claimed — even though departments ultimately reported directly to the mayor.

But that changed with the reorganization. Now, only three people are direct reports to Cogswell — a scheduler, special assistant and his chief of staff. That chief of staff, who is paid $250,000 a year, or about $30,000 more than the mayor — is the focus of the chain of command. As the city’s organization now stands, 12 department heads report directly to the chief of staff and several managers of other departments report to the department heads. It’s a top-down structure centralized with an employee, not the mayor. Maybe it creates efficiencies. Maybe not. But either way, it takes the mayor out of the dayto-day running of the city.

No one voted for that.

So does it really matter? Some would argue that it doesn’t because the city’s functions continue as usual. But others say putting a bureaucratic layer between the city’s elected leader and his department heads creates accountability and transparency issues. And the mayor, now with less direct responsibility, continues to earn the same six-figure salary, even though his job has substantially changed to more style than substance.

CHARLESTON CHECKLIST of community objectives

We encourage community leaders to act on these audacious priorities:

1. Deal with the water. Build a strong resiliency plan to harden infrastructure and make smart climate change decisions about development, roads and quality of life.

2. Fix roads, traffic. Repair and improve roads and reduce traffic. Speed up alternatives, including more public transportation.

3. Be smarter about education. Inject new energy into the broken Charleston County school board by focusing on kids, not national mantras.

4. Conduct public business in public. Be transparent in public business. Stop the secrecy.

5. Invest in quality of life. Build more parks. Have more festivals. Invest in infrastructure that promotes a broad sense of community.

6. Engage in real racial conciliation. If we embark on more conversations and actions on racial reconciliation, our community will strengthen and grow.

7. Develop fewer hotels, more affordable housing. Make Charleston a more affordable place to live for everyone.

8. Develop Union Pier at scale. Let’s not put ship-sized buildings on the coveted Union Pier property downtown. Instead, make what comes appropriate.

9. Build and follow a 50-year plan. Plan for the county’s long-term future and follow the plan.

10. Pay people more. Pay a living wage. Push South Carolina lawmakers to set a real minimum wage.

Home hospice care is a blessing

Part of life is death. It can be painful, agonizing, emotional, numbing and scarring — for patients and surviving family members and friends.

Fortunately, there are good people who provide trained care to help make the passing of someone easier for the person who is departing and for those preparing to mourn.

These are the professionals of hospice, who step in at the end of one’s life to make last days easier, more comfortable and of better quality when pain from cancer or crippling dementia from Alzheimer’s takes over. Hospice caregivers generally work at a patient’s home where they team with primary caregivers, often loved ones, to help the person who is transitioning to manage pain and deal with everything from keeping clean to going to the bathroom.

In recent years, about 1.5 million to 1.7 million Americans used hospice services annually at the end of their lives, much of it paid through Medicare for people 65 and over. But according to the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization, twice as many people could benefit from soothing hospice care. And more than 80% of Americans don’t really understand what hospice is.

So here’s an easy-to-understand explanation: It’s care, not a cure. It’s a way for someone to die

with dignity and compassion in their home, often surrounded by family members.

In a powerful book titled Being Mortal, Rhodes scholar and Harvard-trained surgeon Atul Gawande concluded while modern medicine can keep people alive longer, its use at the end of someone’s life — particularly those with terminal illness — might be less appropriate than for someone to die at home and in some comfort. The end of the life of his father, also a doctor, at home had a particular impact.

“We’ve been wrong about what our job is in medicine,” he wrote. “We think our job is to ensure health and survival, but really it is larger than that. It is to enable well-being. And well-being is about the reasons one wishes to be alive.”

Later he wrote it was encouraging that more patients were seeking palliative care at the end of life.

“Sometimes we offer a cure, sometimes only a salve, sometimes not even that. But whatever we can offer, our interventions, and the risks and sacrifices they entail, are justified only if they serve the larger aims of a person’s life. When we forget that, the suffering we inflict can be barbaric. When we remember it, the good we do can be breathtaking.”

One South Carolina hospice professional said giving end-of-life care is the kind of work most people would find incredibly tough because it

involves helping people at what may be the hardest time in their lives.

“Yes, there are very hard days, and yes there are those patients and families that you inevitably take home with you and cry with or cry for,” she said. “But guiding people through the difficult time, empowering them with the knowledge and ability to make those difficult decisions a bit easier and more peacefully is extremely rewarding.”

She said hospice care often helps patients feel some control in an uncontrollable situation at the end of their lives.

“The hospice philosophy of not seeking aggressive treatment can be difficult for people to wrap their minds around, but offering someone the chance to die living instead of live dying — and to understand they can make those choices — is often the last and most dignifying opportunity we can give them.”

Home hospice care really helped my sister, Catherine, who died two weeks ago. And it helped our family. For that, we are eternally grateful. Catherine Coleman Brack, 1969-2024. Rest in peace.

kateboarding is so much more than just a sport. It’s a subculture predicated on community rather than competition, with an emphasis on selfexpression and risk-taking.

The Charleston skate scene is strong, and the skate parks in Charleston today are the results of lasting community effort and dedication.

When skateboarding started to take off in popularity on the East coast in the 1980s and 90s, there weren’t any designated local places to skate (except the street, where you could end up in trouble with the cops). Fast forward to now, and there are multiple skate parks in Charleston — such as one of the most-attended Charleston county parks, SK8 Charleston on the upper peninsula’s Oceanic Avenue, and the DIY, community-run “Bridge Spot,” which is under Interstate 26 near Huger Street. The story of Charleston’s relationship with skating is more like a full-blown saga, as local skate legend Hank Biering explained. “Charleston County has now basically embraced skateboarding — me and the people I skated with, we had to wait our whole lives for that to happen. We fought for that skate park our entire lives.”

The OGs and the Bieringville bowl

Biering and his friends began skating on Charleston’s streets, skating anything they

could — jumping off stairs, going down rails, evading police — and honing their skills at the George Street pool, which he called Charleston’s “first unofficial skatepark.” Originally a reservoir from the late 1800s, it was converted into a municipal pool in 1933 and became a skate hub after its closure in 1974. It then was filled with dirt and demolished in 1991.

Once the pool was gone, skaters needed a new spot. Local skaters Henry Finch and Nancy Moore raised funds to commission skate park designer Tim Payne of (skateboard design firm) Team Pain to create the “Charleston Hangar” in North Charleston. Though it closed after less than three years, it was celebrated for its legendary quality and influence on East Coast skateboarding.

Biering said 28 days before the bowl was to close, he was the last local skater to hear the news — “Nancy knew I’d take it the hardest.”

Biering offered Finch $1,000 for the materials, and he and his friends volunteered to handle the demolition.

“It was basically a stack of $1 bills from like 1,000 poor friends,” Biering recalled. In 1993, the bowl was moved to Biering’s property on Johns Island, (a.k.a. “Bieringville”) where it’s gone through many iterations over the last 30 years — like refinishing with new, outdoor-treated material, constant repairs and the addition of commemorative markers for skaters who have died.

“Hank’s bowl” was in a state of semi-disrepair in 2021 when a $17,000 donation from the brand SkateLite and $5,000 from the local community restored it. Now, the bowl is still open to those who are able to shred it — there’s a Halloween bash and contest every year that attracts people from all over. But be warned, Hank’s bowl is pretty gnarly.

“Pro skaters will be traveling from New York to Florida, and they stop here just to see it — I’m talking the best skateboarders in the world,” Biering said. “This is intimidating to them.”

The new SK8 park

And SK8 Charleston — as Biering said, the park that he and his friends fought for for so many years — finally opened in 2017 after no shortage of controversy.

It’s important to note that $1 million of the $4.8 million project was raised by the local skate community, with Shannon Smith, a local skater, leading the charge with help from the nonprofit PourItNow. The skate community raised funds through art shows, punk concerts and bake sales. The city of Charleston matched the amount, and when the Oceanic Street site it decided on needed lots of work, then-Mayor Joe Riley stepped in and expanded the funding. The site then became a county park.

Steve Aycock, a photographer and longtime member of the local skate crowd, said the community efforts behind both SK8 Charleston and the Bieringville bowl “can’t

be overstated. … Everybody that comes here (to the Bieringville bowl) contributes in some way,” he said.

The community-run Bridge Spot

The Bridge Spot is a concrete skate park located under the I-26 underpass. It’s a do-it-yourself effort that’s covered in street art and has a bit of everything for both beginners and advanced skaters. The Spot is run by community members Leigh and Vern (who asked for their last names to not be used). In 2012, they took over running

the Spot which was started in 2009 by Trey Hankey, Jack Cox and Aaron Green.

Over the years, Vern, Leigh and their friends, many of whom are professional skatepark builders, have improved the park, adding high-quality obstacles. “The city allowed us to keep it, as in, they haven’t torn it down.” Vern said. “And people started coming from everywhere.”

Leigh’s been leading the charge in refreshing the space’s artwork throughout the years — the Bridge Spot embodies a DIY spirit that she explained is at the heart of skate culture. Sometimes you’ll catch an art market or a DJ set while skating at the popular spot.

“It’s a labor of love for everybody. Blood, sweat, tears and all of that. You’re doing a lot of really hard work, and paying for it, with nothing but the payoff of just having fun. It is really like a public service project in a lot of ways — often with the knowledge that the spot will eventually succumb to development or the city will crack down,” Leigh said. “But we do it regardless — it’s about having fun in a way that benefits your whole community.”

Leigh and Vern share that the park has fostered many intergenerational friendships and serves as a resource for local and visiting skaters, including children and students from the College of Charleston.

“We’ve watched kids learn how to skate

here and then end up traveling the country and competing in contests,” Leigh said. “It’s been a great resource for people.”

Speaking of contests, Sept. 21 marks the second year that Bridge Spot hosts its annual contest in honor of Charleston skater Ben Bartowski who passed away in 2023. There’s a $1,000 cash prize and the $15 entry fee to skate goes towards suicide prevention. More: @bensfriendshope.

“It’s a way to get together and celebrate Ben’s memory,” Leigh said, with Vern adding how the skate community is a family: “After you’ve been in it for a while, you know people all over the world, and you’re friends forever from bonding over this thing. … It just brings people together.”

SK8 Charleston is a place to learn

For those interested in picking up skateboarding — there are tons of lessons to be had at SK8 Charleston, which features two bowls, a more than 200-foot-long snake run that funnels down into a 9-foot-deep pocket, and a 315-foot-long street course.

SK8 Charleston manager Joey Crawford said the world-class skatepark not only draws in visitors from all over, but also caters to all skill levels, including beginners as young as 5 years old to retirees.

“In the past year, we’ve taught hundreds of kids. Our instructors are amazing. It’s so cool to see (students) progress from learning to get on a board, to making connections with people, and absolutely shredding,” Crawford said.

He added SK8 Charleston team works to put on cool events, plus reinstate some on pandemic hiatus that the manager before him, Josh McFadden, established when the park opened.

On Aug. 30, for example, it’s the first monthly Ladies’ Skate night, with a performance by the local riot grrl band, Lefty Lucy. Plus, the park’s biggest contest of the year is coming up on Sept. 14., an all-day event with street and bowl contests and every skater’s favorite — cash prizes.

Contests and skating in general is an awesome way to challenge oneself, Crawford said.

“It’s totally different than say a team sport. It’s just you, and your movement. Skating makes you intertwined with the environment — and the world wasn’t designed for skating. You have to adapt and challenge yourself. It’s a form of therapy.”

Area farmers recover from Debby

After dumping more than a foot of rain in Charleston last week, tropical storm Debby continued to move up the coast. She left a wet city in her wake, but not a devastated one. While initial storm predictions suggested catastrophic flooding, Debby’s damage wasn’t on par with the 1,000-year flood the area saw in 2015.

Some farmers were hit harder than others. Brigmon Farms in Cottageville was, according to co-owner Timothy Brigmon, completely destroyed. The family-run farm specializes in poultry and eggs and sells products like quiches, butter and pies at local farmers markets. Debby completely flooded the Brigmon home, farmstand and mini bakery.

“We lost 80% of our birds. We lost our commercial kitchen and all equipment inside,” Brigmon said. “We will be rebuilding as soon as the water recedes, but it will take a while to get back to where we need to be again. We hate asking for help, but funding is really what we need to get the farm going again.”

You can support the Brigmon family and farm on gofundme.com.

Local farmer Sidi Limehouse, of Rosebank Farms, called the wet week “a real bad situation.” The Johns Island farm produces beans, tomatoes, carrots, collards and more and sells all of its produce, along with seafood, flowers and additional regional items at its farmstand at Kiawah River.

And while Limehouse said that Debby’s impact was “nowhere near” the devastation from the 1,000-year flood, no farmer looks forward to hurricane season. Wet fields force farmers to wait for things to dry out.

“If you’re gonna do this kind of farming, you have to be optimistic,” Limehouse said. “That’s just the name of the game. If you’re a pessimist, you need to go lay bricks or something.”

The folks at Johns Island’s Jeremiah Farm & Goat Dairy were optimistic about Debby after receiving a foot of rain that left

What’s new

Hotel Bennett’s restaurant, Gabrielle, is now open for Saturday and Sunday brunch. From 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. every weekend, guests can order from a menu that features items like Carolina crab cake benedict, wild mushroom and goat cheese quiche and chicken and waffles. things “soggy” but not flooded. Co-owner Casey Price said that she was thankful that the recent drought in the area had ended. During the storm Price said, “All the goats are high and dry in the barn and enjoying room service.”

The farm is scheduling cheese-, soap- and kombucha-making classes for late August through fall and interested participants can learn more online at jeremiahfarm.com.

Getting back to normal

Jeff Siewicki of Wadmalaw’s Vital Mission Farm, said that while he lost a few young turkeys to the rain and flooding “it could have been much worse.” He was thankful that the regenerative farm didn’t suffer any major damage.

Nathan Boggs of Fili-West Farms said that restaurant closures left the farm, which specializes in pasture-raised eggs, with a lot of unsold inventory. The mild winds, though, kept the farm from sustaining any real damage.

Fortunately for oyster lovers, Debby didn’t shut down oyster season like the 1,000 year flood nine years earlier. Owner of Lowcountry Oyster Company, Trey McMillan explained how his company prepared for Debby. “We halt harvesting if we have more than four inches of rain fall in a 24 hour period, so, for this storm, we prepared by conducting a larger than normal harvest on Sunday before the rain started,” he said. “By doing

this, we ensure we can supply some of our local clients and a couple of our wholesale accounts throughout the Southeast. The influx of fresh water can affect the oysters if it doesn’t flush out quickly, so we are hoping the next few tide cycles will help move the fresh water out and bring in nice salty water so we don’t see any dead loss.”

Farmers markets were washed out last week, too. Deputy director of North Charleston’s Cultural Arts Department, Ann Simmons said: “This point in the market season is always a struggle because when we’re not dealing with the absolute blistering heat, we’re dealing with the threat of storms. Thankfully our new location has the pavilion, so we’ve not had to cancel as many markets this season as we would have in past years when we were completely exposed to the elements.”

The North Charleston Farmers Market reopened in the recently renovated Park Circle Pavilion earlier this year. Head there for a wide variety of vendors, food trucks and entertainment from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. every Thursday now through Oct. 24.

Kristy Bialas, the organizer of the yearround Johns Island Sea Island Market, saw plenty of customers come out to the Saturday morning market that took place just days after Debby left town.

“Most of our farmers have come through with some damage, but not devastation,” she said. “The market did well and the customers were very supportive as we worked back towards normal.”

The Charleston Place recently announced the creation and appointment of a new role, culinary director. Chef Gabriel Haaz steps into the role, overseeing all culinary programs at Charleston Grill, The Palmetto Cafe, Thoroughbred Club and Meeting at Market. Haaz is a graduate of the Culinary Institute of Mexico, Puebla and has operated kitchens for The Ritz-Carlton and Montage Hotels & Resorts, as well as working at a three Michelin star restaurant, Martin Berasategui (Lasarte-Oria). A press release details Haaz’ new role: “As the Culinary Director of The Charleston Place, Chef Haaz will focus on innovating the culinary program, providing exemplary food, comprehensive cuisine and extraordinary guest experiences.”

9 places to enjoy long lunches

While summer Fridays may be dwindling down, cooler days are just on the horizon — and a nice breeze seems like the perfect excuse to take an extra long lunch. Whether you need a break from the cubicle or you’re entertaining out-of-town guests, these are some of our favorite spots for noshing, sipping and staying a while.

Malagón

Head to the tiny Spanish taperia and mercado for tapas, cheeses, charcuterie and some larger plates like La Bomba de la Barceloneta (a pork stuffed mashed potato “bomb” with tomato and aioli) when you venture out for your next nice lunch. Pair your meal with a glass of wine (or two, it’s your special midday meal, after all) and pretend you’re whiling away the afternoon in Spain.

Open for lunch Tuesday through Sunday. malagonchs.com

Magnolias

An East Bay stalwart, Magnolias is a great spot for a lunch with coworkers or pals. Get an order of fried green tomatoes (at Magnolias they’re served up right with white cheddar and caramelized onion grits, country ham, tomato chutney and tomato

butter) for the table and split a bottle of wine while you peruse the entrees.

The Glass Onion

Pop over to West Ashley for a chance to enjoy some of Chef Chris Stewart’s fresh and inventive takes on comfort food. The Glass Onion’s menu changes daily and always features as many local ingredients as possible. Some recent dishes include the braised pork belly, made with Keegan Filion pork and served with smashed potatoes, butter beans and sweet pepper relish and a cornmeal fried shrimp po boy, with Atlantic shrimp and Kurios Farms bibb lettuce and tomato.

Tavern & Table

Take in a view of Shem Creek while enjoying new American cuisine at Tavern & Table. Keep things snack-y with charcuterie and raw bar offerings or dive into bigger bites like flatbreads, burgers and classic dishes like shrimp and grits. The cocktail list offers some very reasonably priced drinks, too, so you might as well sip on a few Black & Blue Mules for just $11.

MOMO Riverfront Park

Nestled against the backdrop of the Cooper River, MOMO serves some solid raw bar offerings, fun appetizers and big sandwiches. Whether you’re looking for a double seafood tower (add an oyster shooter for just $5!) or a smattering of apps like deviled eggs, brussels and smoked whitefish pate, MOMO has got you covered. Wentworth’s new book muses on shared emotions

Former S.C. Poet Laureate Marjory Wentworth released her new book on Aug. 12, One River, One Boat, a collection of poems and stories covering critical times in South Carolina’s history — from the Mother Emmanuel AME massacre, to the Confederate flag coming down at the statehouse — as well as milestones and emotional moments in Wentworth’s personal life.

The collected poems are “rooted in place, in the landscape — or more accurately, the seascape,” Wentworth said in an interview with the Charleston City Paper, explaining how her new book shows the interconnection of joy and heartbreak — almost like the rising and falling tide and how one cannot exist without the other.

“I always think about where you hear poetry outside of a poetry reading,” she said. “For a lot of us, we hear poetry at weddings and at funerals. These are times of intense emotions and people want to find the words that say how they feel. … It’s just it’s just a primal thing. Poetry lends itself to dealing with that in a unique way.”

Poetry as history

Wentworth served as the state’s first Poet Laureate beginning in 2003. In 2015, she wrote a poem, “One River, One Boat,” (for which this collection is named), that was cut from Governor Nikki Haley’s inauguration ceremony. The snub made national media and sparked a conversation about the Confederate flag that was then flying on the grounds of the S.C. statehouse.

“With this particular poem, I was really inspired by the inaugural poets for President Obama — Elizabeth Alexander and Richard Blanco, who really wrote very place-centered poetry. Studying them got me thinking about all the people who aren’t really going to be represented up on that stage….I wanted to write a poem about people.”

So she took to Facebook to see what issues were on her fellow South Carolinians’ minds.

“I posted saying, I’m writing for this occasion — what would you say? What are you thinking about? And I was flooded with responses, most of them having to do with social justice issues, education, health care.”

So she decided to use the motif of a river to describe systemic racism in the Palmetto state.

“A river is something that connects us. … It starts in the upstate, ends up in the Lowcountry. The idea was to say, ‘We’re all in this together.’ ”

But when Wentworth sent the poem to Haley’s team for approval, she got an email back saying that there wouldn’t be time for the poem to be read, despite the fact that it wouldn’t take more than a few minutes.

“People got really upset. … It hit a nerve, because it was addressing things that we’re still dealing with.”

After the poem was cut, Congressman James Clyburn read

Wentworth’s latest poetry collection features many of the “occasional” poems she wrote during her time as Poet Laureate of South Carolina

Wentworth’s “One River, One Boat” into the Congressional record in 2015, saying he “hopes the people of South Carolina, across the country, and peoples around the world are as touched by her words as I have been.”

Wentworth is proud that the poem sparked a conversation — and said the experience only made her dive deeper into her craft of shining light on social justice issues.

“Poets are meant to be truth tellers; to illuminate things that don’t get discussed in other parts of our lives. … I am really excited about this book, because this poem and others that were written around that time

have never been collected together like this.”

Now teaching at Wright State University in Celina, Ohio, Wentworth shows her students how to approach reading and writing poetry “almost like a documentary filmmaker.”

“We describe the lived experience, the human experience rather than say, the statistics.”

Wentworth shows her skills at different types of writings in the book, from eulogies, to essays, to poetry written as state laureate, many of which are “occasional poems,” meaning they were written to be read out loud. “It’s a totally different approach than writing for the page,” she said.

“Many times, I’m speaking at joyous occasions like the opening of the Arthur Ravenel Bridge or Food and Wine Festival. And then others are really horrific moments in our state. … Some are from occasions in my own life. ... There’s a real range of joy and grief,” she said, on both the personal and collective scale.

In the book’s advance praise, former Charleston poet laureate Marcus Amaker

said, “A poet is a historian. If they are tuned in to the community around them, their words can be important documents

A river is something that connects us. … It starts in the upstate, ends up in the Lowcountry. The idea was to say, ‘We’re all in this together.’ ”

of an era. South Carolina is a complicated and beautiful place. If you want to know the nuance of the Palmetto State, read Marjory’s poems.”

The release of the book will be celebrated by a reading and book signing reception at 6 p.m. Sept. 12 at Circular Congregational Church. For more information about Marjory Wentworth, visit marjorywentworth.com.

Charleston retro-rock trio Jared Petteys & the Headliners are pushing to grow bigger, better and louder than ever

Jared Petteys & the Headliners choogle along with

“Just Go Baby,” the latest single from Charleston retro-rock trio Jared Petteys & the Headliners, is yet another excellent addition to the party-starting tunes that the group has excelled at since its formation in the late 2010s.

The vinegary kiss-off song rides a monster boogie-saturated guitar riff. Pettey’s signature vocal howls while making the most of its early rock ’n’ roll ingredients, pushing the volume and distortion just short of the point of punk rock raggedness. But is it still the trademark rockabilly that the band built their reputation on, or is it sliding into the blues, riff-heavy 70s AOR (album-oriented rock), or even postmodern pastiche of the various retrorock aesthetics?

According to Petteys, the band has always pretty organically found itself in the rockabilly space, but the new tune is “kind of stepping out of [the genre] a little bit.”

“Rockabilly is a huge part of what we do and what I love, but I’m also really into the blues; I’m really big into 70s rock ’n’ roll [too],” he says. “We’re kind of at the point where we’re introducing these other elements and not making it fit in the box of rockabilly.”

It’s been a gradual coming out of their shell for the group, which made a splash with its entry in the Charleston scene thanks to its consciously 1950s rockabilly panache, complete with Pettey’s evocation of James Dean’s style and an embrace of old-school car culture. But Petteys said it was always more about the independent spirit of rockabilly more than the specific signifiers that drew him to the style.

“Rockabilly is built on that do-it-yourself mentality, very much like the punk community,” he says.” It’s all about getting out there and grinding to build your own fan base.”

rockabilly

Streak of individualism

And given that streak of individualism that drew him to the music in the first place, it also became clear to Petteys that he wasn’t being completely honest by staying purely with the confines of rockabilly. He says the group toured with so many different styles of bands, from punk and hard rock to blues and Americana, that he felt the pull of possibility on his music and the group’s sound.

“It didn’t feel completely genuine if we were only trying to fit what I thought [rockabilly] meant,” he says now. “I’m at a point now where it’s like I just want to take everything that I love and mix it into a big vat, and then whatever comes out of that is [inherently] a more original kind of thing.”

And following that pull is really the whole point–Petteys, a military vet and father of three, left more stable fields in construction and real estate to pursue music full-time on the basis of pure passion.

“I just feel like my life was positioned in this direction the whole time,” he says. “I went through a series of really tough times — I was in the military for six years and deployed to Iraq. I lost friends during that time, and I saw how short life can be. It really made me shift into focusing on what was important to me.”

Fast-forward to 2024, and Petteys and the Headliners keep up a steady flow of shows and a stream of singles to support their vivacious, crowd-pleasing performance style. The trio is currently set to take off on a two-week run through the Midwest on the heels of the new single, including a couple of festival appearances.

“The next step is booking out some more tour dates ... and pushing to be as big as we can on a national scale,” Petteys said.

Jared Petteys & the Headliners will perform at Burns Alley Tavern Sept. 6 and 7 at 10 p.m. For tickets and more info, visit jaredpetteys.com.
