rach 3 7:30pm • September 21 & 22, 2018 Johannes Brahms (1833-1897) Symphony No. 3 Sergei Rachmaninoff (1873-1943) Piano Concerto No. 3 Stewart Goodyear, Piano Ken Lam, Conductor Juilliard-trained pianist Stewart Goodyear joins the CSO to perform Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 3. Perhaps the most technically challenging piano concerto ever written, this virtuosic piece is fiendishly hard to play, visually stunning to watch, and represents the height of classical music’s romantic era. While Rachmaninoff performed this piece a number of times, many of his contemporaries never attempted to play it, perhaps for fear of being compared to Rachmaninoff himself.

ode to america!

7:30pm • October 26 & 27, 2018 Samuel Barber (1910-1981) Adagio for Strings Michael Daugherty (b.1954) Raise the Roof Aaron Copland (1900-1990) Symphony No. 3 Beth Albert, Timpani Ken Lam, Conductor Join the CSO as we celebrate the best of American classical music! Copland’s pioneering Symphony No. 3 includes the famous Fanfare for the Common Man—a work that epitomizes the sound of America. In addition, CSO Timpanist Beth Albert takes center stage to perform Michael Daugherty’s timpani concerto, Raise the Roof. Although often overlooked, the timpani (kettle drum) is a vital instrument that acts as an orchestra’s musical heartbeat, and has the power to influence the cohesion of a piece perhaps more than any other instrument.

mendelssohn & grieg 7:30pm • November 16 & 17, 2018 Edvard Grieg (1843-1907) Holberg Suite Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847) Piano Concerto No. 1

Jihye Chang, Piano Rodrick Dixon, Tenor Charleston Symphony Orchestra Chorus Ken Lam, Conductor

Benjamin Britten (1913-1976) Saint Nicolas World-famous tenor Rodrick Dixon returns to Charleston to perform with the CSO, singing Benjamin Britten’s Saint Nicolas. Additionally, pianist Jihye Yang performs Felix Mendelssohn’s delightful Piano Concerto No. 1. Unlike many other young prodigies of his era, Mendelssohn’s parents did not try to capitalize on his talent, instead giving him the opportunity to experiment on his own. As a result, Mendelssohn began composing at age 12, published his first symphony at 15, and wrote his Piano Concerto No. 1, now a cornerstone of his repertoire, at age 22 while traveling through Italy.

beethoven’s 5th 7:30pm • January 4 & 5, 2019 Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) Coriolan Overture

Yiorgos Vassilandonakis (b.1969) Oboe Concerto (World Premier) Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) Symphony No. 5 Zachary Hammond, Oboe Ken Lam, Conductor Perhaps the most recognizable piece of classical music ever written, Beethoven’s 5th Symphony rose to international prominence during World War II, when the BBC used the symphony’s famous four-note opening to preface daily radio broadcasts. Mimicking the sound of the letter “V” in Morse code (dot-dot-dot-dash), the first few notes of Beethoven’s 5th became closely associated with the Allied Forces’ quest for victory, and ultimately gave this masterpiece its nickname, the Victory Symphony.

royal fireworks 7:30pm • February 1 & 2, 2019 George Frideric Handel (1685-1759) Royal Fireworks Music Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) Orchestral Suite No. 3 Max Richter (b. 1966) The Four Seasons Recomposed Yuriy Bekker, Violin and Conductor Yuriy Bekker returns to the masterworks stage as both conductor and soloist for an explosive program, featuring Handel’s famous Royal Fireworks. Written to celebrate the end of the War of Austrian Succession, this orchestral suite was first performed for a large outdoor crowd in London, including King George II. The music was accompanied, of course, by an impressive display of fireworks, and reportedly caused a three-hour traffic jam on the London Bridge during its premiere.

romeo & juliet

7:30pm • March 1 & 2, 2019 Charles Gounod (1818-1893) Ballet Music from Faust Nicolò Paganini (1782-1840) Violin Concerto No. 1 Sergei Prokofiev (1891-1953) Selections from Romeo and Juliet Robyn Bollinger, Violin Ken Lam, Conductor

Violinist Robyn Bollinger joins the CSO to perform Paganini’s Violin Concerto, a virtuosic masterpiece that is widely considered the most technically difficult of all violin concertos. Bollinger made her debut with the Philadelphia Orchestra at age 12, and has since become a celebrated violinist and chamber musician around the world. In addition, she has won many prestigious competitions, including the International Fritz Kreisler Competition in Vienna, and the Yehudi Menuhin International Competition for Young Violinists in France.

mozart’s requiem

7:30pm • March 29 & 30, 2019 Franz Joseph Haydn (1732-1809) Symphony No. 94, Surprise Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791) Requiem Charleston Symphony Orchestra Chorus Ken Lam, Conductor The CSO Chorus joins the Charleston Symphony for a monumental rendition of Mozart’s Requiem, the final composition of Mozart’s life, and one of the most famous works ever written. Requiem was commissioned by an anonymous patron who attempted to keep his identity secret because he was planning to pass Mozart’s work off as his own. Mozart worked on the piece up until the day of his death—even rehearsing various choral parts with friends while in bed only hours before he died.

russian romantics 7:30pm • April 19 & 20, 2019 Serge Prokofiev (1891-1953) Piano Concerto No. 3 Sergei Rachmaninoff (1873-1943) Symphony No. 2 Joyce Yang, Piano Ken Lam, Conductor After becoming an instant hit with the CSO in 2017, beloved pianist Joyce Yang returns to Charleston to close out the season with a night of Russian romantic music. Yang will play Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 3, which Prokofiev pieced together from scraps of music he had written here and there over the previous years. The piece steadily grew in popularity, and is now considered one of the most cherished piano concertos ever written.
