Reading Rome as an archipelago Forte Monte Mario - Roman cultural center Graduation project
Tutors: Nicola Marzot, Jelke Fokkinga, Niklaas Deboutte Location: Monte Mario, Rome, Italy Year: 2016 The project “Rome as an archipelago is situated at Monte Mario, which is both the highest point of Italian capital and a place of XIX-th century fortress. The multi-layered social, political, economical city’s conditions and the rich history of urban development became a fundamental inspiration for the design. The main intention of the project was to re-translate urban theories (O.M. Ungers The City in the City: Berlin: A Green Archipelago), old typologies (the fortress) and reconsidering the role and direction of re-use buildings, in order to create the artifacts of neighborhood and place stimulating local identities. While searching for the possible location of the future design I discovered the group of abounded. Basing on the literature research I translated the strategic position of the buildings creating the circle around the city as the new archipelago strengthening society. The existence of the fortification system, with its position in different city districts, allows to developed multiple public facilities responding to the needs of local inhabitants. Due to analysis I considered the role of Monte Mario fortress as the cultural incubator (with music, dance and art sections) in which by common actions the local community recreate its integrity. The role of the new public building is not only to provide the space but also to create the symbol for community, its artifact. In that case the priority of existence is given to structures already present-the fortress and its meaning. Nevertheless, the preservation does not exclude functional re-use and development, which by provided function can emphasize the image and the role of the place.

Limitless land Invisible landmark
Tutor: Aldo Trim Location : Plantage, Amsterdam, The Netherlands Year: 2014 The essential role of a landmark is not its design, but the place it holds in a city’s memory. The landmark can be represented by architectural artifacts, places, districts or cities. In XIX-th century in Amsterdam the role of a landmark was realized but newly design district - the Plantage. In the past the Plantage reached a status of an opened for common use place of curiosity integrating nature with human creations. Nowadays, the place lost its character and became more introverted, surrounded by boarders: walls, fences, and wide canals with limited possibilities of crossing. The project of Limitless Land seeks to develop an idea of softening and blurring boarders from urban to functional and architectural scale to release hidden potential of the Plantage as a place of sensual and intellectual experience. The building, which wooden structure refers to first pavilions erected at the Plantage, will appear on the empty site facing Plantage Middelaan street and Artis Zoo and with its new water cut will refer to the past extension of Prinsengracht canal. The aim of the pavilion and it’s openwork structure is to blur the boarders between outdoor and indoor space where public exhibitions, discussions, workshops between Artis Zoo Hortus Botanicus and University of Amsterdam can take place.
