Inside, outside and in between

Francesca Woodman •

Francesca Woodman (April 3, 1958 – January 19, 1981) was an American photographer best known for her black and white pictures featuring herself and female models. Many of her photographs show young women who are nude, blurred, merging with their surroundings, or whose faces are obscured. Her work conGnues to be the subject of much criGcal acclaim and aIenGon, years aJer she commiIed suicide at the age of 22.

Gunther Von Hagens •  Gunther von Hagens (born Gunther Liebchen, 10 January 1945) is a controversial German anatomist who invented the technique for preserving biological Gssue specimens called plasGnaGon. •  For the first 20 years plasGnaGon was used to preserve small specimens for medical study. It was not unGl the early 1990s that the equipment was developed to make it possible to plasGnate whole body specimens, each specimen taking up to 1,500 person-‐hours to prepare. The first exhibiGon of whole bodies was displayed in Japan in 1995. Over the next two years, von Hagens developed the Body Worlds exhibiGon, showing whole bodies plasGnated in lifelike poses and dissected to show various structures and systems of human anatomy, which has since met with public interest and controversy in more than 50 ciGes around the world.

Idea 1-‐ Fashion & the body •  My first idea is based around fashion. Gunther Von Hagen inspired me to make garments which have inside body parts on the outside. Like lady Gaga wore a dress made from meat I will make clothes with fake hearts or intesGnes on the outside etc.

Idea 2 -‐ Doorways •  This idea will be a photography based project focusing on doorways and openings. IniGally I am going to simply photograph open doorways then move on to derelict places with a subject standing between them out of focus. My inspiraGon came from Francesca Woodman in parGcular this photo.

Idea 3 -‐ DeconstrucGon •  I came up with the ideas to destruct items such as suits and other clothing to show the insides or even have body parts being revealed underneath. Similar to my first idea I was thinking about using Hagens work of the body to be what could be revelled on the inside.

Idea 4 -‐ Mural •  For this idea I would use painGng and other techniques to produce the effect of swapping inside and outside. Mural is the effect of having a painGng of outside on the inside of a building.

Idea 5 – Pop art/ Sculpture •  This idea is going to combine classic pop art Pieces with Hagens work of the body for an example I would create the Rolling stone tongue out image into a real life inside out body piece.
