PRAIRIE HOUSE For the final design exercise of Studio I, our class was prompted to create a studio and living space for two artists in residence. The design had to be comprised of light materials and express “lightness. My design draws influence from the undulating landscape created by the prairie on the northern portion of the site. I was inspired by the way the grasses create a singular yet dynamic plane from many individual components. The Prairie House conveys the same idea through perforated steel fins that line the facade of the building, a glass and steel box, at four foot intervals. Together, the fins create an undulating third condition somewhere between building and landscape. The program of the interior spaces determines the shape of the fins. The fins extend out in conjunction with more personal spaces to provide privacy while disappearing completely in other areas to form large windows.

URBAN BEE CENTER

EDUCATION/GATHERING

GARDEN

For my final project for Studio III: Program, I designed an Urban Bee Education Center that seeks to restore reciprocity between bees and humans through gradients of visual connection, spacial hierarchy, and directed focus. The Center uses these methods to move bees and humans from disconnection, on the first and third floors, to connection, on the second floor.

WAREHOUSE WEAVE For the final project of Studio II: Site, I designed an interpretive center that focused on the relationship between the Mississippi River and the city of Minneapolis, MN. The building sits on a thin band of parkland that links the city to the banks of the Mississippi, in the heart of the city’s Mill District. The site was significant to me because of its position between the two intertwined forces of city and river. Upon further inspection I began to see the site as sitting at the edge of a fabric, where the warp of the city begins to fray as it meets the weft of the river. The tension caused by the disintigration of the urban grid as it integrates with the curves of the Mississippi defines the site. I chose to highlight the complex relationship between these two forces in my design. I did so by weaving the observer through moments of overlap, interweaving, and frayed edges.
