the a. d. german warehouse, designed by frank lloyd wright, is located his home town of richland center, wisconsin. the warehouse sits at the southern edge of the central business district, on the southwest corner of south church street and east haseltine street. the entrance of the building faces west, with the official primary address listed as 316 south church street.

the site is currently zoned in the business district, with residential areas to the south and east, and various commercial structures to the north and west. church street is the busiest avenue in proximity to the site. the topography of the site consists of a slight, gradual slope falling away from the corner towards the interior of the block, having a change in elevation of several feet.

the warehouse consists of four floors and a basement, with the interior divided by structural columns into 16’ square bays. the overall dimensions of the building are 50’ x 80’. the exterior of the building is faced with common red brick, and contrasted by an ornamental concrete frieze at the roof. windows act as slits and are sparse for the purpose of maximizing storage and deterring vandalism or crime.

wright used ornamentation as integral, stating that, “integral ornament is the inner expression of form. the ornamentation of the warehouse was inspired by mayan architecture, for its elemental qualities and natural forms of material. the capitals of the columns and the exterior concrete frieze feature geometric motifs consisting of triangles, r ec ta n g l es , a n d s q ua r es .

concept + goals
the warehouse
10
The renovation and restoration of the Warehouse will preserve the historical integrity of the building, but will also breathe new life and purpose into the space. The building will be transformed into a multi-use space for community members and visitors to enjoy, consisting of a ground floor restaurant and a second floor gallery. The design concept for the space is unity, which was one of Wright’s core beliefs – that architecture must stand as a unified whole, and all parts make a final unity. Unity will be achieved through the delicate balance of old and new. Through preservation, original elements of Wright’s d esig n w il l be resto red and maintained, including materials, structure, and details, while new ones will be added that will harmonize with and complement the architect’s original work.

The existing geometry of the space will serve as the guiding force that will inform and influence new design decisions. The concentric square motif used as the ornamentation on the frieze of the building w i l l be tr a n sfor m ed a n d reinterpreted throughout the space to create a unity between exterior and interior. The original brick and concrete of the warehouse will be restored and maintained, and wood will bring warmth and character to the space while honoring Wright’s reverence for natural and native materials. The use of regional and local materials will meet LEED standards for sustainability, and also reflect the spirit of the building. The overall aesthetic of the space will be a simple unity of old and new that pays homage to Wright’s work and beliefs, but will also m eet con tem por a r y n eed s.

a line of custom furnishings plays a critical role in the design of the warehouse, as it creates a cohesive design l a n g uag e a n d a u n i f i e d aesthetic. the system utilizes simple planes of solid and v oi d t h at w r a p a r o u n d surfaces to join together a variety of materials (wood, concrete, metal, etc.). though modern in form, the simplicity of the system pays homage to wright’s attention to detail across all scales of design.

the warehouse entry opens up to the restaurant lobby on the first floor, and is the first glimpse into the building. to honor the building’s origins, the original concrete floors and columns are preserved, and a custom reception desk reflects the geometry on the concrete frieze of the building. this establishes a relationship between the exterior and the interior, and sets the tone for the rest of the first floor.

an elevated chair gallery acts as the central focal point of the gallery space, mimicking the raised platform of the restaurant on the first floor. like the lower level, the red oak plank flooring and ceiling is used to designate the chair gallery as its own distinct space. the glass walls allow the gallery to still remain one seamless open space, while the custom table displays create circulation and delineation.
