senior thesis project | honorable mention
The A. D. German Warehouse, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, is located in Richland Center, Wisconsin. The building will be transformed into a multi-use space for community members and visitors to enjoy, consisting of a ground floor restaurant and a second floor gallery. The design concept for the space is unity, which was one of Wright’s core beliefs – that
richland center, wisconsin
the warehouse exterior
architecture must stand as a unified whole, and all parts make a final unity. Unity will be achieved through the delicate balance of old and new. Through preservation, original elements of Wright’s design will be restored and maintained, including materials, structure, and details, while new ones will be added that will harmonize with and complement
slit window detail
the architect’s original work. The existing geometry of the space will serve as the guiding force that will inform and influence new design decisions. The exterior geometry and motifs will be transformed and reinterpreted throughout the space to create a unity between exterior and interior. The original brick and concrete of the warehouse will be restored and maintained, and wood will bring

warmth and character to the space while honoring wright’s reverence for natural and native materials.

harborcommons
Harbor Commons provides disaster relief for hurricane victims in a non-traditional way. It offers necessities such as food and drink, shelter, electricity, and facilities, but unlike typical crowded shelters, it meets emotional and psychological needs of disaster victims as well. The building sits on high ground overlooking the Hudson River, safely out of the flooded areas of the city. The floor plan of the space echoes that of a harbor; the most quiet and private areas safely encircled, while the more public areas are more open. Harbor Commons offers a library with reading nooks, computer and printing access, a coffee shop and lounge with charging access, and a classroom area. A palette of warm wood and tones of orange, teal, and gray create a balanced and comforting environment.
Public and
private space coexist in harmony, creating
floor plan
a space that is large enough to serve many but quiet enough to feel calm and safe.

Doctors Without Borders is a non-profit organization that provides medical relief to areas and crises that are otherwise not receiving aid. The design for the company’s corporate headquarters reflects the ideology of the organization, and reinforces the ideals of impartiality and neutrality- the principles upon which Doctors Without Borders was built. it instead strives to provide a clean, comfortable,

For runaway and homeless youth, Harmony House is a place of sanctuary and safety, as the teens that call it home are entering a new chapter in their lives. This is an overwhelming transition for most to make, because many who have grown up in troubled situations have
