The quarter in Lichtenberg is situated on the eastern side of the Spree and forms part of the peripheral area around the centre of Berlin. Over the last two centuries the urban development couldn‘t generate a homogenous town structure there. The heterogeneous fragments of landscape and settlements are now integrated in a new urban structure. As the quarter is characterized by a lot of community gardens the identity of the quarter shall be underlined and strengthened by linking the various parts of the quarter by a strong green space. In this green space

the existing community gardens are integrated and new places for urban gardening are created. A key element of the green space is a new re-interpreted garden city. Green casts connect the quarter both to the East and to the West with the surrounding Berlin quarters and the Spree. The new quarters are characterized by breaking up with the traditional Berlin block-edge construction to a more open and public space creating structure.

roof garden Living between Bohème and Luxury semester project 2014/15 supervised by prof. karin schmid in collaboration with vanessa jung

The aim of this semester project was to think about new ways of living with the background of housing shortage and densification. Our idea was to create an affordable home on a rooftop of an existing building thinking about how much space we really need for living during the course of the year. The design pursues spatial versatility but above all climatic flexibility. The roof garden house is built up as a greenhouse of opaque polycarbonate with a shed roof. It is characterized by different climate zones where the usuable space can vary depending on the seasons, from the smallest area - inside the cube - to the largest which comprises the whole space on the rooftop in summer.

8

The spaces are created by a lightweight concrete cube placed inside a greenhouse structure and two big curtains. Depending on the season and the climate the living space can be used differently. In winter the house can be closed completely to keep the heat inside. In spring the living space can be extended with rising temperature, whereas the house can be openend up entirely during summer to favour cross ventilation.

single module 16,1 x 27,8cm flexible string together system 4 OLEDs 1 converter lasered HDF 3mm hinge 16x12mm carbon fibre pipe 3mm The secret of the lamp we designed is not revealed before the luminaire is first opened - out of an absolutely flat surface the lamp „IX“ folds out. In each case two strings are folded in one another to half the width resulting in one luminaire. It is a modular system and the basic module is about the size of an OLED module. The OLED surfaces are located in the centre layer and therefore cannot be seen in closed position. The exterior appearance is only defined by a clear and calm alignment of the joints. By opening the two strings the shape changes from an „I“ to an „X“. The luminous OLED surface appears and lightens the resulting spaces-in-between. In closed position the lamp hangs on the wall or can be stored away space-savingly. The modular system „IX“ is not only designed as a free-standing luminaire but intended as a series. So it can also be thought of a wall light as a shelf, a table lamp or a pendant.

a nomad‘s home Courtyard House _ Housing + bachelor‘s thesis 2014 result 1.0 (A-level) supervised by prof. myriam gautschi

„My home, this network of habits, serves catching adventures and as a stepping stone for adventures“ Vilém Flusser (own translation)

The task of my bachelor‘s thesis was to find a vision of life that enriches the living with a plus. The overlapping of the familiar and unfamiliar generates new space in which the natural lighting is provided exclusively by courtyards and skylights. I decided to combine housing with travelling. The residents are Anton, a 36-year-old travel jounalist and Giulia, a 32-year-old photographer who have turned their passion into their profession. They report from distant countries and cultures and they often travel more than half of the year. One key element therefore are the guests, who become residents themselves by living in the house while Anton and Giulia are abroad.

16

It was important to create a place, where Anton & Giulia could find rest and peace - as a couple and also individually. On the other hand, it was the aim to create a place for people to meet and exchange ideas and experiences. Thus the idea of „islands“ as private areas of retreat distributed in the house developed. The composition of the five cubic buildings generates new continous rooms around them. The cubes are characterized by a thick wall in which further functions such as the sleeping area for the guests are embedded. Th is offers Anton and Giulia the opportunity to completely close the cubes - their intimate treasure box with all their memories - when they‘re away. Nevertheless the guests can live in the house without infringing the private sphere of the residents.

The cubes are characterized by different degrees of privacy. They feature differing surfaces whereas the interior - the heart - of every cube is fully panelled in oak. Every other furnishing which is integrated in the thick walls of the cubes is manufactured of concrete. This is also the case in the bath volume where a prefabricated concrete sink is fitted into the wall. The interior is likewise panelled in oak resulting in a wooden front of the wash basin.

„Is it possible to find a technical solution for an emergency shelter which enables a flexible extension afterwards?“ Almost every year Chile has to face 3-4 natural catastrophes - the most frequent are earthquakes and forest fires. The aim of the „taller experimental“ was to design an emergency shelter for crisis situations. It should be designed extendable and modifiable both in space and in standard to transform it to an adequate home when the crisis is over. The anti-seismic construction with clay was a central topic. Therefore we also experimented with different clay construction techniques and built up 1:1 models in a three day workshop in Quebrada Verde. ENCAJA is characterized by its unit assembly system. Thereby it can be built up quickly in the emergency situation and also dismantled easily afterwards. If there is an emergeny situation, the emergency shelters will be transported to a football ground or any other empty unscathed field and can be built up there by the people themselves who are affected by the catastrophy. The pre-fabricated shelters will be delivered in shelter kits with an assembly instruction and can accomodate up to 4 adults or even a family of 6.

When the crisis is over the shelters can be dismantled and built up again in their final plot. Now ENCAJA can be developped individually in its dimension and design. Due to the open „shelving structure“ the walls can be filled up with straw - in combination with a clay plaster - as a simple insulating material. This structure also allows using the shelf in its general function as well as to place windows as requested. The intention is to first extend in width and then in height. The ceilings are constructed in a similar way as the walls. The straw is embedded between two wooden panels. This modular system offers many advantages. It is easy and quickly built up and the residents can design and build their very individual house, with which they can identify themselves.

carmenstrasse Reorganisation of a Multifamily Residence in Zurich internship 2013/14 zimmer schmidt architekten

The apartment building is situated in Hottingen, a beautiful part of the city with a good view of the Lake Zurich. It‘s a listed building built in 1909. The whole building shall be restorated and reconstructed so that the owners can move in to the two top floors where a new internal staircase shall be integrated. Through the reorganisation of the apartment building 5 new apartments will be created on ground, first and se-
