Nancy Hanes Sasz ’85: Alumni Service Award Recipient

By Spencer Clair ’09, Director of Leadership Giving

Our alumni community is full of members who remain connected to Country Day and give back in ways that make our school stronger.

The Alumni Service Award is one of three capstone awards presented to alumni who have demonstrated extraordinary service to Country Day through the Alumni Association and provided outstanding volunteer leadership in support of the Alumni Association’s mission of engaging, connecting, and celebrating service to our community.

Alumni Service Award recipients are selected based on their involvement at Country Day throughout the years. Exemplifying extraordinary service, many have served in various roles such as Alumni Council representatives, Class Reunion leaders, Country Day Fund or Bucs Together Days of Giving advocates, and Board of Trustee members. They are leaders who give exceptionally of their time, expertise, and energy to ensure we remain Bucs for Life.

Since the Alumni Service Award was created in 1994, all of our award recipients are unique in their service to Country Day and the Alumni Association. Yet there common characteristics demonstrated in our recipients—generous, selfless, leader, connector, enthusiast, dedicated, and passionate.

A gift to and for us all

In April 2023, we welcomed our 2023 Alumni Service Award recipient, Nancy Hanes Sasz ’85. Nancy was honored during Alumni Weekend at the annual Alumni and Volunteer Distinguished Faculty/Staff Appreciation Luncheon. Nancy has served as Parents’ Association president, alumni class agent and Reunion Committee member, Boosters Club secretary, and Advancement Committee member, with many contributions to Country Day in between.

If you know Nancy, then you know her humility and gentleness make her an approachable volunteer; her ability to effectively use words (both spoken and written) makes her an unbelievable teacher, mentor and friend; her leadership and athleticism on the field make winning even sweeter; and her compassion and service to others make her an inspiration to us all.

Head of Middle School Warren Sepkowitz, otherwise self-proclaimed as Nancy’s Fan Club president, presented Nancy with the Alumni Service Award by sharing remarks from many other of her Fan Club members, all from various parts of her life. Warren closed by saying, “Nancy is so filled with humanity, kindness, humor, love, humility, curiosity, and resilience. Through the pain of losing her parents, her daughter (Sally Sasz ’17) and her sister, Nancy continues to teach and to amaze us all. With her humanity, service to others, vulnerability, and unending capacity to love. She is a gift to and for
