Charlotte Gaisford British tablecloth and napkin collection spring 2025

New for spring 2025, Charlotte Gaisford has designed and created a new tablecloth and napkin collection. Perfect for spring and summer tables, incorporating some of her most popular designs. The tablecloths and napkins feature pretty spring florals and geometrics surrounded by a complimentary border. They are available in two sizes, made from 100% linen, they are washable at 30 degrees and are 100% British made.

Charlotte looked high and low for a long tablecloth for her 3.5m table in her kitchen. She was confronted with cheap cotton imports which all looked the same. She thought to herself as a textile designer ‘what is involved in the making of these tablecloths? how can they be sold so cheaply?’ Charlotte learnt all about sustainability and fast fashion when she was at college doing her textile degree 10 years ago. It is obvious that cheap labour, cheap base cloth and lots of water is used to produce these imported tablecloths. Surely customers nowadays are wanting to know how and where items are made before they buy.

Charlotte realised that there is a market for a British made tablecloth which is 100% linen, long, wide and washable. British manufacturing is on the decline but with the advent of digital printing it is possible for a cottage business to make a quality product with the help of a digital printing company. Charlotte designs the tablecloths in her studio on her farm in Northumberland, the digital file is sent to a printing company in the North-west and is printed onto wide 100% linen. When the tablecloths arrive back to Charlotte’s studio they are all hemmed with generous mitred corners.

Charlotte is passionate about producing a quality 100% British product. Her company has in the past only sold fabric and wallpaper and has not been involved in producing any home accessories from her fabrics. After research and asking her customers what they wanted, Charlotte realised that tablecloths and napkins would be a great addition to her range.

Charlotte Gaisford has designed 6 tablecloths

Alice

This is based on a design from her recent Madonna collection. The design was hand painted in different sections and then stitched together to form a charming loosely based chinoiserie print. The border was a fabric she designed for the Madonna collection, but it did not make the cut to the final edit for the collection. It is an organic pattern, of stars and a stripe, although striking, Charlotte thought it might have appeared too simplistic compared to the other patterns included in the collection. This design will be added to Charlotte’s collection in its other colourways, for spring 2025.

Knot

This print has been so successful, and it was created from one brush stroke, it continues to be one of Charlotte’s best-selling designs. It is so simple but effective and can be used on its own or to complement other fabrics and act as a background and even a neutral. The motif for the border was inspired by a tile design Charlotte found in museum on Santorini, Greece. Charlotte added some distress and aging to the design to make it look softer and have less of a block colour effect.

Elizabeth

A floral design which reminded Charlotte of a garden trellis. Elizabeth is named after Charlotte’s older sister who has always been a great supporter of Charlotte’s work. The border is called Elinor, and this fabric was named after Elizabeths older daughter. Both these patterns can be found in The Dreaming Garden collection. Charlotte names all her fabrics after females, they are all people Charlotte knows and loves, and it is so much easier to remember the names of the fabric if you can visualise the person the fabric has been named after.

Sharanshar

This has been a popular print and has appeared across three collections over the years but in different colourways. The Sharanshar green colourway used to create this tablecloth has always been the most popular colour option. The fabric versions are always very effective as curtains and headboards. The border pattern stripe was one hidden away in Charlotte’s pattern archive. This will be introduced as a fabric to buy in Spring 2025.

Zara

This is part of the Madonna collection, and it has really caught the imagination of Charlotte’s customers. It is a simple design and started off as a very small doddle which was then turned into a stripe and a bright simple spot added as a highlight. The border is a reworked colourway of a fabric called Emma from The Stitchery collection. A folk art stitched flower recoloured in the same colours as Zara green fabric. Charlotte found this pretty flower very faded and difficult to see on an old textile garment she found in a charity shop. Charlotte loves to do textile design archaeology and bring the design back to life and recolour it.

Tiger

This must be one of Charlotte’s most popular prints of all time, so it made sense to recreate it as a tablecloth. The original fabric is printed on a sturdy cotton, the print has really applied itself printed on 100% linen, the colours are so clear and the details sharp. This design has so far been reproduced without permission by the Chinese, Indians and just recently the Spanish. It is so difficult to stop copyright abuse in the textile industry, with platforms like Pinterest and digital print on demand services, this situation is only going to get worse. The tiger is the only tablecloth which does not have a border. The original print by Charlotte was made up of lots of sketches and placed together to form a charming half drop repeat pattern. When Charlotte was designing the tiger at the early stages she coloured it blue just to add some colour, she later tried to add a more realistic colour to the tiger but this did not work as well as the original blue colour she used, a happy design accident.
